Dear Members,
As we head into this issue of The Journal, I am delighted to report a strong start to the year, with robust revenue growth across all our revenue streams.
In addition, we’ve made significant progress across several strategic initiatives. Our new website is now live, making it easier than ever to explore what’s on, book shows, and access member information online.
We were also pleased to officially open Stage 1 of our Entertainment Hub project, a major milestone in our ongoing redevelopment plans and we look forward to unveiling the next stages as the year progresses.
Sustainability continues to be a key focus, and the rollout of solar panels across the Club represents a major step forward. The system, comprising 801 solar panels, is projected to produce 582,636 kWh of clean energy each year. This initiative not only reduces our environmental impact but also improves longterm energy efficiency and cost savings.
Community engagement remains at the heart of what we do. From supporting Escabags and Eat Up Australia to the success of our Tokens from the Heart campaign, we are
proud of the many ways we’ve been able to give back to those in need. These initiatives form part of our broader Heart of Wenty focus, and we thank our members and staff for embracing them so fully.
As we move into the second half of the year, I want to thank our loyal members, our dedicated team, and the Board of Directors for their ongoing contributions. I look forward to sharing more success with you in the months ahead.
Warm regards,
Ian McCann PRESIDENT
Dear Members,
As we head into a busy mid-year period, I’m excited to share what’s ahead at Wenty Leagues.
We’re gearing up for the Perfect Plate Awards, where our talented chefs will showcase their culinary creativity with a
winter-warming Lamb Shank Pie and a nostalgic Sticky Date & Fig Pudding. These dishes will be available from May 2nd to June 15th, and I encourage you to come in, enjoy a meal, and vote for Wenty. Your support means a lot to our team and helps put our Club on the culinary map.
We’re also preparing for Magpie Family Fun Day on Sunday 13 July. This community event on Ringrose Oval brings together footy, family entertainment, and fundraising, all in one place. It’s a fantastic opportunity to cheer on the Wenty Magpies, enjoy free kids’ activities, and support a local cause through a gold coin donation.
Our Christmas in July raffles will soon return with festive prizes and plenty of cheer. Running alongside this will be our $150K ‘Make Your Day’ promotion, giving members the chance to win a share in $15,000 in prizes every Monday evening from June 2nd to August 11th. Together, these events promise to bring fun, excitement, and great rewards across the winter months.
Whether you’re visiting for a show, a shared meal, or a quick catch-up, our team is here to make every visit a memorable one. I also want to acknowledge the continued community support from our staff, who have volunteered for causes like Escabags and Eat Up Australia. These efforts, along with our ongoing Heart of Wenty initiatives, demonstrate our commitment to giving back.
Thank you for your ongoing patronage. I look forward to welcoming you to the Club soon.
Warm regards,
Glenn Kovacs CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER

For five weeks, we proudly hosted the Tokens from the Heart initiative at Wenty Leagues, encouraging our members and guests to take part in a communitydriven effort simply by enjoying a meal. Through their participation, guests earned virtual hearts, which they could allocate to one of three selected charities. By the end of the initiative, over 780 hearts had been distributed, with the Children’s Tumour Foundation receiving the highest number, followed by Assistance Dogs Australia and the Dandelion Support Network.
Each of these incredible charities plays a vital role in improving lives within our local community. The Children’s Tumour Foundation provides essential support for individuals affected by Neurofibromatosis, Dandelion Support Network helps families in the Cumberland area by providing essential baby items, and Assistance Dogs Australia trains service dogs to assist individuals with disabilities, enhancing their independence and quality of life.
Tokens from the Heart was more than just a fundraising effort, raised awareness about the invaluable work these organisations do. This initiative aligns with our broader community focus under the Heart of Wenty brand, reinforcing our commitment to making a meaningful difference in the lives of those who need it most. We are grateful to our members and guests for their participation and generosity, and we look forward to continuing to support our community through initiatives like this.
In March, our Wenty Leagues team traveled to Wollongong to take part in a meaningful event with our community partner, Escabags. Together, we packed essential “Escape Bags” to support victim-survivors of domestic and family violence, ensuring they have the necessary supplies for their first 24 hours after leaving an unsafe situation.
These vital bags are distributed to stockists nationwide, offering immediate relief and support to those in need. Our team packed both non-gender-specific adult bags and adult-child versions, each thoughtfully prepared to provide comfort and care.
During lunch, we had the privilege of hearing from Escabags CEO and Founder, Stacy Jane, who shared her powerful personal story of escaping abuse. Her inspiring words reinforced the mission behind Escabags and deepened our understanding of the importance of these resources. The day left us with a profound sense of gratitude and purpose, highlighting the crucial role Escabags plays in providing hope, safety, and support at such a critical time.
We are proud to be a stockist of Escabags at Wenty Leagues. If you are in need of an Escape Bag, please feel free to visit our friendly reception staff. Your privacy and safety are our highest priority.
On Friday, 7 March, we proudly celebrated Employee Appreciation Day, recognising the hard work of the incredible team that makes our club a vibrant and welcoming place, with a staff morning tea.
From behind-the-scenes efforts to frontline interactions, every staff member plays a vital role in delivering exceptional service, managing operations, and building a positive environment for our members and guests. The day was a wonderful opportunity to highlight the teamwork that drives our success and growth.
We are deeply grateful to our entire team for their unwavering commitment and invaluable contributions. They are the heart and soul of our club, and we are proud to celebrate their efforts in making Wenty Leagues the special place it is.
Representatives from Wenty Leagues attended the annual International Women’s Day event at Revesby Workers’ Club, themed #AccelerateAction. This theme emphasised the need for decisive steps towards gender equality.
The event featured inspiring speeches from remarkable women, including Sallyanne Faulkner, who has dedicated her career to empowering women across various industries, and Grace Rowe, a trailblazing motocross rider who shared her journey and advocacy for youth through Stand Tall Australia. The event also showcased Frida Deguise, an entrepreneur and comedian, whose resilience has left a lasting impact. We celebrated these outstanding women’s achievements and expressed our gratitude for the incredible women within our own community.
In celebration of Seniors Week, we proudly hosted our inaugural Seniors Wellness Fair in the Alfresco, offering a day of engagement, health, and support for our members and guests. This special event provided an opportunity for attendees to connect with local allied health services and access valuable resources designed to promote senior well-being.
Guests participated in a variety of interactive activities, including Heart Checks by Heartbeat of Sport, brain training exercises with Age Lab, and informative discussions on managing diabetes from the Danii Foundation. The fair also featured a range of essential support services, including Seniors Rights Services, Assistance Dogs Australia, the Sir Roden and Lady Cutler Foundation, SydWest Multicultural Services, The Parkes Network, and Cumberland City Council. Additionally, we highlighted our sporting sub-clubs, showcasing opportunities for people of all abilities to stay active and engaged.
The event was a tremendous success, with both vendors and attendees sharing positive feedback. It was a fantastic display of community connection, and we are proud to have brought together so many local partners and members in support of health, wellness, and active living. We look forward to making the Seniors Wellness Fair an annual tradition, continuing to support and celebrate our senior community.
In February, 20 dedicated members of our Wenty Leagues team came together to support Eat Up Australia in their mission to provide nutritious lunches for disadvantaged school children.
In a fast-paced sandwich-making challenge, our team prepared over 1,100 cheese sandwiches in just 34 minutes, helping to ensure that more children received a proper lunch. With the rising cost of living leaving many children across Sydney without adequate food, Eat Up Australia plays a vital role by delivering sandwiches weekly to schools, including those in the Cumberland LGA.
We are proud to continue our partnership with Eat Up Australia, working together to ensure no child goes to school hungry.
We were proud to support Youth Off The Streets (YOTS) at their recent Netball Gala Day at Netball Central, Sydney Olympic Park. This exciting event brought together young people from five YOTS schools across Sydney and the South Coast for a day of friendly yet competitive matches.
Our team, alongside representatives from the Wenty Leagues Netball Club, volunteered to help make the event a success. The day was filled with fast-paced competition, featuring both experienced and new players, but more importantly, it was a celebration of sportsmanship and teamwork.
The Netball Gala Day was a powerful reminder of how sport can unite and uplift young people, fostering confidence and connection. We look forward to continuing our support for YOTS and their incredible work within the community.

We’re Ready for Another Year of Perfection with our Lamb Shank Pie & Sticky Date & Fig Pudding
Behind every great dish is a story. For this year’s Perfect Plate dessert entry, it begins with childhood memories, creativity, and a love of comfort food. We caught up with our apprentice Chef, Olivia Knowles to find out what inspired her competition creation.
How long have you worked at Wenty Leagues?
Just over a year now. It’s been a great journey so far and I’m loving every moment in the kitchen.
What made you decide to become a chef?
It really started when I was about three years old. I used to beg my parents to take me to my grandmother’s house so we could cook together. She had previously worked as a cook, and she taught me how to make all kinds of dishes. Later, in high school, I took hospitality and food technology courses, and it all just clicked. I realised cooking was my passion and what I was meant to do.
What do you enjoy most about cooking?
I love the freedom to create something new, trying ingredients I’ve never used before and experimenting with flavours. Cooking allows me to be creative and hands-on. Every plate is like a little artwork, and I get to design it.
Was there anything that inspired your Perfect Plate dish?
I thought about the kinds of food that bring me comfort in winter. I remembered days when I was feeling down, and my mum would make a big tray of sticky date pudding for us. We’d curl up under a blanket, watching chick flicks and eating something warm and sweet, it always made me feel better. That memory inspired the dish.
What do you think makes your Perfect Plate dish special?
It’s a nostalgic classic with a twist. You might not expect it, but fig and date pair beautifully, like chocolate and wine. It’s comforting, familiar, but with a little surprise that makes it something special. I think people will love it.
Support Olivia & our other chefs by voting for our dishes in the Perfect Plate competition.

Bowlers Shine in Championship Finals While State Pennant Team Faces Tough Competition
The past month has been filled with excitement and nail-biting finishes for Wenty Leagues Bowling Club, with a string of club championship finals, thrilling state-level contests, and the beginning of our Platinum Pennant campaign. From sensational local victories to state-wide showdowns, there’s no shortage of action to celebrate.
Wenty Leagues was honoured to be invited to the inaugural $100K Sydney Masters 4-a-Side event at Cabramatta last week. The who’s who of Australian and international talent was on show in what proved to be an extraordinary week of elite bowls.
Our team of Jacob Nelson, Trent Whittingham, Emmett McLeod, and Rohan Dennis performed admirably, exceeding all expectations. At one stage, they were sitting in fourth place with just one day of sectional play remaining. Unfortunately, they came up against the eventual champions, Cabramatta, suffering two rink losses that denied them a spot in the semi-finals. Still, finishing 8th out of 24 top-tier sides was a massive achievement and a testament to the grit and skill of our players.
Women’s Major Pairs Championship
In a dramatic finale, Lyn Hickey and Marg Mitchell edged out Marie Farmer and Dot Cragg 17–16 in the Women’s Major Pairs Championship. Their stunning victory, sealed with composure and class, earned them the right to represent our club at the upcoming NSW Champion of Champion Pairs event in Sydney this April.
Another cracker of a final played out in the Mixed Pairs Championship, with Sue Cunningham and John “Emu” Stephenson taking the title in a 16–14 cliffhanger against Chrissy Hillman and Nathan Townsend. Both pairs demonstrated superb teamwork and sportsmanship in a match that could have gone either way.
The Senior Singles Championship is now reaching its pointy end, with quarter-finals just around the corner. The draw is as follows: Val Thomas vs Dale Maitland, Glenn Calnan vs Dave Crelley, Warren Lambert vs Betty Packer, and President Steve Baldwin faces off against John “Emu” Stephenson in what promises to be a blockbuster encounter.
NSW State Open Reserve Singles Championship
As we go to print, Tim Mitchell is up at Ballina representing Wenty in the NSW State Reserve Singles Finals. After two solid wins on day one, Tim is now just one more victory away from a semi-final berth. We’re all cheering him on and hoping the next journal update includes a photo of Tim hoisting the championship trophy!
Men’s State Pennant Finals – Division 4
Our Division 4 Men’s Pennant side battled bravely at the NSW State Finals at Soldiers Point. Despite a spirited effort, they were unable to progress from their section:
· Round 1: Loss vs Bundanoon, 43–62
· Round 2: Loss vs Maitland City, 32–64
· Round 3: Loss vs Pittwater RSL, 57–62
While the scoreboard didn’t go our way, the team wore the club colours with pride and gave it their all across three tough matches.
State Pennants & Platinum 1s
There are just three rounds remaining in the Open Gender State
Pennants before Metro North-West Regional playoffs. It’s been a challenging season plagued by unavailability’s, sickness, and injury, which have disrupted team consistency. That said, the 2s, 4s, 6s, and 7 White sides remain in the hunt, and all eyes will be on the final round on Sunday 27th April.
Meanwhile, the elite Platinum Pennant competition begins next week, with Wenty Leagues launching their campaign against fierce rivals Merrylands “Magic.” The opening weekend is a tripleheader, with matches against Taren Point and Mt Lewis following closely behind at Wenty.
This elite 11-round competition is the fastest-paced and most competitive domestic bowls event in the world, and Wenty is proud to be one of only 12 clubs—and the only sub-sporting club—competing at this level. The sprint to the finals will wrap up by the end of May, with the top five teams advancing to the finals at Cabramatta.
Cameron Curtis, Bowls Co-ordinator
This season has been a remarkable journey for Wenty Leagues Cricket Club, marked by outstanding performances across all age groups and divisions.
A massive congratulations to the following teams for their incredible achievement of winning the premierships:
B2 Team
These victories reflect the dedication, skill, and teamwork exhibited by all players, captains, and coaches. Each match demonstrated the passion and commitment that make our club a hub of excellence in cricket. Well done to everyone involved—you’ve made Wenty Leagues proud!
Our Annual General Meeting (AGM) will take place on Monday, 26th May at 7.30pm. This is a great opportunity for members to come together, reflect on our successes, and plan for the future of our club.
Additionally, we look forward to celebrating the achievements of this season during our Presentation Nights on the following dates:
Senior Presentation – Friday, 16th May
Junior Presentation – Sunday, 18th May
These evenings promise to be special occasions to honour the hard work and accomplishments of our players and teams.
Thank you to everyone—players, coaches, captains, families, and supporters—for making this season truly unforgettable. Wenty Leagues Cricket Club continues to shine, and we can’t wait for the next season.

On 25th January 2025 we had a full boat for this trip weather was very good we are fishing at 130m all day, but the fishing was a bit slow. Most of our fisherman managed to get a good feed of longfin perch. Quite a few tangles were had but overall was a great day. We managed to catch 25 longfin perch. Charlie Harp got the biggest fish a 1.16 kg flathead, Lewis got the biggest bag of 3.12 kg for the day.
Next fishing trip was on Saturday, 22nd February. We had a full boat of fisherman with fishing around 60m all day with some nice snapper being caught. We also got pig fish and leather jackets. Biggest fish a 1.5 kg snapper caught by Mario Leo.
We have a new charter boat owner Lee who seems like a nice fella, Rodney is still assisting the previous owner of the boat, and we’ll see how things get on.
Next trip was 22nd March. The weather was fantastic. The fish were a bit scarce again. We finished 70m to 120m. Most of us managed to get a good feed. Biggest fish pearl perch caught by Lewis of 1.43 kg biggest bag of fish by Lewis 4.4 kg and then new skipper Lee is operating the boat on his own.
Congratulations Lewis for being Club Champion for the year. We would also like to thank Rodney the previous owner of the boat for all those years of looking after us and untangling all airlines you’ll be sorely missed.
Till next tide
Phil Nash, Publicity Officer
Well, here we go, nearly a quarter of the way into the year. I hope this report finds everyone well and settling into 2025 and that those resolutions you all made are tracking well. Before I begin with proceedings, it is with a heavy heart that I pay respects to one of our
long-term members whom we tragically lost on the 6th February. Graham Kenyon was a member for 15 years and served on the committee for over 10. He was a dedicated and passionate club member and will be profoundly missed. On behalf of the club, we wish his family and friends our deepest condolences and may he rest in peace.
We start with our Presentation Night that was celebrated in January, and I am certain everyone enjoyed themselves. Congratulations to all the winners and runners-up, with a special salutation to Manatu Fatu who was our Clubman of the Year.
I previously reported the 2025 calendar started with our Guzzler of Guzzlers. Following on from this, we have kicked off with more events with our Doubles Matchplay being held in the January/February period with the final played at Blackheath on the 16th February. Line honours went to Jarod Simonetta and Elvis Mircevski with runners-up Marc Weyman and Luke Weyman. Congratulations to all.
February also saw the hosting of our AGM which resulted in the election of our new committee members:
President: Glen Grant
Secretary: Brian Adams
Treasurer: Danny Chaiban
Captain: Tim Willet
Vice-Captain: Rob Ruffle
Handicapper: Steve Adams
Match Committee: Leon Plotkans, Jim Clarke and Norm Hindy
Congratulations to all those elected. It is my sincerest hope that we can double down on last year’s efforts and enhance our club for the benefit of all.
We started the Cock-of-the-Walk with qualifying at Studley Park. This event is played over the majority of the year with the final at Wentworth Falls in December.
Our annual trip took place on the 16th March at the South Coast where we played three challenging courses, Gerringong, Worrigee and Nowra. We enjoyed fantastic weather and great company with a lot of encouraging feedback from the members.
Our yearly challenge took place on the 23rd March with Gosford Leagues at Penrith. Unfortunately, Gosford had a small representation, resulting in a 148 points to 114 win going to Wenty.
Our last event for this journal was the Summer Ambrose which took place on the 30th March at Springwood. Winners were Michael Gardner, Marc Weyman, Chris Lauer and Gary Noon. Runners-up were Buddy Pirikahu, Brian Adams, Frank Pagano and Matt Pittas. One of the highlights was one of our jackpot holes going off on the 18th by Kelekolio Fangupo (alias Soup) with a terrific shot landing 30cm from the hole. Collecting over $300. Well done Soup and all who competed.
So far this year, we have had eleven guzzlers over our first twelve rounds. The first three clubman positions are Jarod Simonetta (61pts),
Luke Weyman and Ryan Payne (59pts). We also have our Foursomes event, Leagues Club Cup and Stableford Championships coming up in the next couple of months and will post results in the next journal. That about wraps up March. We are always looking for new members so if you are interested or know someone, please check the sub club website for contact details.
Kind Regards.

At the time of publication of this article the Swimming Club will be in it’s Winter recess.
Three of our members attended the Black Swam Carnival at the Dee Why Rock Pool on Sunday, 23rd February 2025.
Jessica Seaborn and David Burns won their respective Open events. Well done on your achievements. Didier Ballglobin was too keen in the salt water and was a bit fast.
On 2nd March 2025 we held our Annual General Meeting and Presentation Luncheon.
The standing committee was elected unopposed.
Our members Tim Miller and Jessica Seaborn were recipients of the majority of the trophies due to their consistency throughout the season. Further members received awards for their individual events.
Our Technical Officials were also recognised for their contribution. Over the King’s Birthday long weekend in June we will have members attending the King’s Legacy Carnival in Dubbo being swum in a 25 metre heated pool adjacent to Dubbo RSL.
This carnival supports Dubbo Legacy raising funds which are put towards their assistance given to veterans in the local area.
We will be returning to swimming on Sunday, 12th October 2025 with time to be in by 7.45am and first event commencing at 8am.
We welcome all newcomers to our Club as there is no need to be an Olympic swimmer as you swim on a handicap basis against your own nominated time. We swim at Wentworthville Pool located in Dunmore Street Wentworthville (next to Cumberland Highway).
The pool will be open over the winter months should you wish to get in some secret training.
