Olympics

The Olympic Torch The arrival of the Olympic Torch in Aylesbury was a once in a lifetime opportunity. It was good to see the whole community come together. Community involvement: this is what the Olympics and the Paralympics are all about. I was pleased that the Torch visited Stoke Mandeville, the home of the Paralympics. There were people lined up along the route from early in the morning and it was a lovely sight to see so many school children joining in such a wonderful event. There was a terrific atmosphere which is helping to build excitement for the Olympics and Paralympics which are happening in August and September. Cllr Steve Bowles

Achieving your Olympic dreams

In 1992 one of my four sons, Matthew Icke then aged just 12, really wanted to go to the Olympic games to see his track and field heroes: Matthew was a very promising young  01296 620011 athlete having already become a junior 800m and cross country champion both in the 07738 467662 donnasironingservice@ntlworld.com Aylesbury Vale District where he lived and at Dacorum district; as he attended Tring EVANS PROPERTY School. However, his most recent success MAINTENANCE SERVICES had been to win a special event in Milton plumbing, building, decorating Keynes on August Bank Holiday 1991. local and reliable Matthew's winning Gold medal and prize was phone: 01296 622668 presented by another hero of his at the time mobile: 0780 4696183 Seb Coe, twice Olympic Gold Medalist.

It was impossible to afford the very expensive Olympic ticket 'sports packages' for Barcelona accommodation. Matthew and I took a budget flight to Barcelona. Armed with just a photograph of Matthew and Seb Coe from the MK event and a Spanish phrase book we set off to the Spanish national bank; who were selling the Olympic tickets . I think they were taken with the extraordinary efforts we had gone to, to try and buy tickets for the track and field events. Plus after seeing the photograph we were carrying I think they also believed our story of 'Seb Coe World Champion . . .amigo'! allowing us to buy all the track events tickets we wanted including the 100 metre final at which we were privileged to see Linford Christie win gold and take some fantastic photographs; from within the stadium of Linford completing his lap of honour just after winning the 100 Metre Gold. When we arrived back in the UK our friends were waiting at Heathrow with a copy of The Independent with the main back page story showing a photograph of Linford Christie, surrounded by the world press after winning Gold. Linford is coming towards us in the crowd and saluting the Union Jack we are holding up high with TRING A.C written across it. Simon Icke Full story and photos on www.wendover-news.co.uk
