LOCAL WWII VETERAN HONOURED BY FRANCE Wendover resident David Morgan, who celebrated his 100th birthday in February 2023, was given a surprise award of the French Legion d’Honneur at the beginning of December. This recognises his work nearly 80 years ago in WWII, when he worked on establishing a secure communication link from the Normandy beaches back to Britain on D-Day +5, which led to the liberation of France.

When the dinner was over everyone was enjoying informal chats around the table when a dashing officer addressed the assembled company and mentioned David by name. He was the Air Attaché from the French Embassy who had come to give David the Legion d’Honneur.

The Chiltern View skate rink is becoming a firm winter favourite for the area. As it may well have closed by the time you see this (it closes 31 December), make sure you get it in your diary for next year.

Less well know was that there was a separate overflow training camp in Halefield, the large irregularly shaped field that runs below Hale Lane at the base of Boddington Hill, bordered by Hogtrough Lane at its southern edge.

For anybody who loves to ice skate, this was a wonderful opportunity to put on those blades and have a lot of fun. Whether you are an experienced ice-skater, or just want a good day out, it has a bit of everything. As well as the spectacular opening night starring Suzanne Shaw and La Voix, Chiltern View had some extra events to bring in the crowds. These included Drag Queen Bingo, The Abba Sisters and Breakfast with Santa during the week before Christmas.

Tapping for Charity Once again, on 19 November, the Rozelle School of Dance rose to the challenge of the Children in Need Tapathon. Wendover Memorial Hall was buzzing with excitement as tappers of all ages warmed up and then performed a routine with others up and down the land as they attempted a World record for the number of dancers simultaneously dancing to the same music from 1pm. They and their supporters were fortified by hot drinks and cake, some decorated with Pudsey stickers.

Deliverer(s) of the month

Val and Richard Brown have been delivering Wendover News for several years in Witchell and more recently in Bacombe Lane. In the New Year they plan to add the houses along the Heron Path to their route. Witchell is an easy beat, with short front gardens and houses close together, but Bacombe Lane is a round trip of almost a mile. The residents of Bacombe lane had not previously had their Wendover News delivered and many of them said how pleased they were to have it.

Pudsey himself came along for photographs and to help them with the dance! The dancers wore “Choose TAP” tee-shirts. The sales of these raised £640. Donations for refreshments raised a further £456 on the day meaning that over £1,000 was sent to the charity.

Val and Richard took over delivering to Witchell when the late and much loved Dr Colin Campbell had to give up due to failing health. Val, a retired English teacher, and grateful to be still fit in her seventies, loves living in Wendover, and enjoys meeting a lot of people in her several volunteering jobs. As well as delivering the Wendover News Thanks to Councillor Stephen Worth of Wendover Parish Council and she works in the library and the Florence Nightingale Charity Shop, Jane Larkham editor of Wendover News who acted as witnesses to marshals at Wendover Woods Parkrun and is a member of the Chiltern Society Conservation Work Group. Overshadowed for many years by her more famous father, May Morris is now beginning to gain the recognition she deserves as an incredibly talented craftswoman in her own right. Teacher, lecturer, editor, jeweller and designer, May was accomplished in a wide range of crafts, but it is her work as an embroiderer that is considered to be her greatest achievement. May’s knowledge of needlework, her talent for designing and her brilliance with the needle led to raising the status of embroidery to fine art. This talk will cover May’s life and work, with a focus on her beautiful designs and completed embroideries, demonstrating why May should be regarded as one of the most significant artists of the Arts and Crafts Movement.

It also means that if the weather is bad, nobody, feels they have to come out! Public meeting

About 100 people attended the public meeting organised by the Parish Council to discuss the impact of HS2 on the local community. If you missed the event, the key issues presentations and plans for 2024 are available on the front page of our website at whs2.org.

Small Dean road closures

Further night time closures on the A413 just outside of Wendover will continue in January to enable the road to be diverted around two viaduct pier piling sites, as shown in HS2’s animation www.tinyurl. com/sdv2023video. Following work on these sites more closures are expected later in 2024 to allow the road to be shifted again onto Points raised at the meeting included how best to support the local its final alignment. businesses that are suffering due to the HS2 road closures, and how we should engage the younger generations to determine how Wendover Dean viaduct Wendover should evolve. We understand that having being closed for 18 months that all the necessary hurdles have now been overcome to allow HS2 to complete the installation of the water main between Dobbins Lane and the HS2 concrete works. Hopefully by the time you read this the path to the Station Approach Business Park may have been reopened.

HS2: Prospect for 2024 How will the HS2 works affect local life in 2024? Wendover News asked the independent experts in the Wendover HS2 Mitigation Group what we might expect. Their predictions, inferred from what HS2 and their local contractors (EKFB) have made public, are below.

There is a substantial embankment being built north of the Wendover Dean Viaduct, from Rocky Lane to the start of Small Dean Viaduct where HS2 passes over the main road just outside Wendover. A similar embankment will be built beside the bypass to take the track from Small Dean Viaduct north to Bacombe Lane. Under-bridges will be built through the embankments for Rocky Lane and Small Dean Lane. These will be permanent, but there will be other landscape

Driving south of Wendover will continue to be a problem. During the year there will be two occasions when the A413 just south of the bypass will be realigned, first to one side and then the other. More closures of the road will be needed to achieve this, but the worst of the disruption has already happened, over the last two years. The realignment will enable construction of two main piers of the Small Dean Viaduct. For people driving out of Wendover on the London Road, the effect will be of passing through the middle of a busy construction site, with heavy machinery and large concrete structures being erected close to the road. The traffic lights further along may cause further delays, since there will continue to be vehicles leaving the viaduct works compound. Wendover Parish Council and the Wendover HS2 Mitigation Group are pressing for this issue to be resolved. Photo: Murray Cooke

features that will appear and disappear as construction progresses. The most conspicuous temporary change in the landscape during 2024 will be the extent of the cutting through Ellesborough Road, to allow earth movements and the creation of the Green Tunnel in future. Before now, much of the excavation movement has been constrained by Ellesborough Road, which has prevented movement of the massive dump truck traffic between Small Dean and Stoke Mandeville. Computer impression of Small Dean Viaduct and the A413: HS2

Sometime in the spring, EKFB will be launching the first part of the Wendover Dean Viaduct steel beam across three of the piers (upright columns). See https://tinyurl.com/wdvpiers for HS2’s animation. Glimpses of this will be visible from the A413 from a car travelling towards Great Missenden, about 2.5km from Wendover. It will be spectacular, but not fast: movement will be measured in centimetres per hour! Please note that article on pages 26 and 27 of the previous edition of Wendover News confused the two viaducts: In fact the 350m Small Dean Viaduct is nearest to Wendover; the longer 450m Wendover Dean Viaduct is further out near the Firecrest pub, just under half-way to Great Missenden. wendovernews.co.uk

07340 993802

Bacombe Lane and Ellesborough Road will both be temporarily diverted and will share a common route into Wendover across the short new road section and girder bridge over the cutting works. Once the new road section is open, the cutting will be extended through the existing Ellesborough Road, where the cottages have already been demolished, continuing south to Bacombe Lane. This will involve moving a significant quantity of spoil north to be stored in the field close to Wendover Station. We don’t expect excessive noise or dust from the dump trucks, as they will be operating in the cutting and generally below the existing ground level. At the northern end of the bypass, an underground wall is being constructed to ensure that water from the Coombe Hill Aquifer continues to flow towards the Canal and Weston Turville Reservoir, rather than escape down the line of the track and cause flooding in Stoke Mandeville. ...continued from previous page. We expect this to be completed by the end of the year which will allow the Environment Agency (EA) to review the effectiveness of the scheme. This should enable the EA to grant permission for further excavation of the Green Tunnel cutting between the old cricket ground and Folly Bridge, down to the expected track foundations level. During 2023 the EA only allowed excavation down to 3 metres

above the expected peak winter groundwater level on this section. Nash Lee Road and Nash Lee Lane were diverted in 2023 to make space for the construction of the North Cutting and a new alignment of the road from the Bypass roundabout, including an overbridge. The foundations for the bridge “abutments” will involve piling close to the houses in Nash Lee Lane, expected during this year. During the year Wendover News will be working more closely with the Mitigation Group to keep you informed of what to expect. The sole mission of the Wendover HS2 Mitigation Action Group is to do what’s right for Wendover.

Bacombe Lane will also be realigned, with the original access point from South Street/London Road being temporarily closed later on in the year. The new access point will be near the footpath to Bacombe Hill - from Ellesborough Road and will provide residents with access to their properties. Both realignments are temporary, and they will eventually be removed, with the area landscaped towards the end of the project. Their original alignments will be reinstated with slight amendments to take the road over the Wendover Green Tunnel.

“Start making plans before the commence date – perhaps even delaying the start of your resolution. Think of situations which may trip you up, and plan what you will do in that situation. For example, a busy day at work will put you off going to the gym, yet surely 15 minutes at the gym is better than none at all? If you join forces with a friend to go for a walk, then you can’t let them down, can you? “Habits are the best way to make your behaviour permanent, as a habit will usually win over other, equally strong, intentions. Resolutions don’t have to coincide with the new year: It might sometimes be easier if you make the change at a time when other life changes are happening – for example when you are moving house. Perhaps even when you start sitting in a different room, or after you have moved the tempting evening snacks to different place.” We asked Dr Harris if personality type, age or mental health was a factor in behavioural change. She was keen to point out that mental health could be an important element in deciding to make changes to your own behaviour. She added “I haven’t seen any evidence that personality makes much

difference, but stress and low mood can make it more difficult to change. It would be sensible to prioritise your mental health first. The NHS ‘Every Mind Matters’ is a very good resource for this.” Dr Harris shared her concerns about the influence that advertising and marketing can have a negative effect on behaviour. Many companies hire behavioural scientists to help inform their strategies. Often our choices are limited by our situation, our environment and income. For this reason individuals can’t be expected to take the whole responsibility for making healthy behaviour choices. Society needs to support us all, regardless of social status or income, to make healthier choices. Photo: Peter Elwin Measures such as the sugar tax and free school meals are the kind of large scale behaviour science that can help everyone. There you have it, a breakdown of the approach we can take to elicit change from our unwilling mind and body. Are you ready for the challenge? Let’s see what 2024 brings. Music in Wendover Piano recital from two rising stars of Wendover

good acoustics to suit their repertoire. St Mary’s church in Wendover met the requirements perfectly. They set out to find their audience, with a simple flyer, given out by friends and family and advertised on local Facebook pages, including that of Wendover News. A grand piano was hired, and a representative of the charity invited to speak about its work. With their sisters, Emma and Iris, they have previously organised fundraising concerts and have been instrumental in raising over £3,700 for UNICEF.

Two young, talented musicians, still at school and preparing for important music examinations. Meanwhile a messy and brutal war in Gaza seems to be getting worse by the day. Jude Kayakiran and Thomas Harrington had these two things on their minds and managed to address both with a single solution. They decided to give a classical piano recital to raise funds for Christian Aid’s work in Gaza.

This wouldn’t be the first show to begin with technical problems. Twenty minutes before the start of the performance, the piano was found to have a stuck key. Much to the bemusement of the audience, the nice man from the hire company came in, undid a few screws and wooden blocks, and removed the whole keyboard. A couple of minutes and a squirt of WD40 later, the show was ready to go on. Since many people would not have seen the innards of a grand Jude Kayakiran is pursuing music piano before, this must have seemed like part of the entertainment! in his gap year, before going to study history and politics at Now for the serious stuff. Manchester. He will be performing Rachmaninov with the Chiltern Given the confidence shown in setting up the event, one would Music Academy this month and expect the performers to be able to play all the right notes in the plays with the Bucks County right order and at the right time (to quote a famous comedian). This Youth Orchestra and Aylesbury performance exceeded expectations by miles. Both Thomas and Jude Symphony Orchestra. As well as played a challenging range of classical pieces with aplomb, and did so piano, he also plays violin, viola with sensitivity and dynamics that you might expect from musicians and trumpet. with many more decades of experience.

Thomas Harrington is in the first year of A levels at Aylesbury Grammar School and attends Junior Royal Academy of Music for music composition and piano. As well as piano, Thomas is also a grade 8 clarinettist and plays saxophone with jazz bands. He has been performing since the age of 10 and also plays piano in jazz ensembles and clarinet in county orchestras and wind ensembles.

The event was arranged at quite short notice. They wanted a small appreciative (and generous) audience and an intimate venue with

In the break, Neil Dymond from Christian Aid spoke about its work with the most vulnerable communities, particularly in Gaza. The audience had the chance to donate, and to understand where compassion can break through the divisions of war. They also got the chance to immerse themselves in some wonderful music they may not have appreciated up until then. The boys did good. The pair played works from weighty classical composers – Liszt, Mozart, Rachmaninoff, Bach and Beethoven and Chopin – also adding some lighter but no less difficult pieces such as ‘I got rhythm’ by Gershwin. For some of the recital they had the sheet music in front of them, but possibly only as a reminder, as the music was extremely well practised. Jude’s rendition of Chopin’s lengthy Ballade No 1 was particularly impressive, being performed completely from memory.

Once again the Choral Society was joined by Oxford Sinfonia members, who performed fantastically. This was no mean feat, since Choral Society, orchestra, soloists and Peter Bassano, music director, only met for the first time on the afternoon of the concert! But what a success they all made of it!

by James MacMillan, Arvo Part, John Taverner, Frank Bridge, Verdi and Mascagni. “Wendover Choral Society always welcomes new members of all abilities and would love you to go along and join them. The first rehearsal of the Spring term is on Thursday 25 January. No auditions are necessary. The tea, biscuits, chat and camaraderie are worth going along for, as can be seen from the photo of the last rehearsal before the concert. And then, of course, there’s the singing, as a bonus. Join the fun!” For more information contact wendoverchoral@gmail.com.

“It really was a joy to hear such celebratory music on a chilly December evening and Wendover Choral Society is grateful to everyone who donned hat and gloves to come and join their fun. “The title of Wendover Choral Society’s next concert in May is ‘Paradise and Plenty.’ It is to be a diverse and contrasting programme of sacred and secular music, with the awardwinning Amersham Brass Band and organist Adrian Bawtree who will perform music by Messaien Wilby and Saint-Saens. The band will give the Salvation Army vibe with Eric

The lights were switched on and Wendover was looking festive for December. The event on Manor Waste was enjoyed by a huge turnout, and alongside the stalls and entertainments the local shops and restaurants ran their own mini events, making it a great night out. Bucks Radio hosted the evening on the stage and the bear made a brief appearance, although he did have beary sniffles so was not there for long.

and it was won in the end by Cornelli, which gets a three-month advertising campaign on Bucks Radio. Bucks Radio can be heard by downloading the app or visiting www. bucks.radio. Thanks go to our sponsors Harry Fisks Christmas Trees, J Brown Funeral Services and Ivan R Cammack Opticians. We are still counting the pennies but it looks like the event raised about £600 for Wendover Youth Centre.

HS2 Mitigation

Back in November we had a fantastic turnout to a meeting on how the community can engage and work together to mitigate some of the issues that HS2 is creating locally. There is a report of the meeting, with details of ideas we will be progressing, on the Parish Council website. This meeting has helped shaped the Parish Council and Wendover HS2 Mitigation Action Group agenda for 2024/25. You can still feed in ideas by going onto the Parish Council website and getting the contact details for both groups.

In 2024 the Parish Council will be supporting the Business Group to help make Wendover a good place to do business. As well as the High Street there are many other local businesses, and we will be trying to promote all of them on our website www. welcometowendover.co.uk Parish Council Surgeries The Parish Council will be continuing drop-in January and February are tough sessions at the Library every third Thursday times for the High Street and now of the month, between 10am and 12pm.
