DEAR FRIENDS, Our 28th year will certainly go in the books as one of the most unexpected! This has been a year full of great strides and accomplishments by our students and our community despite a global pandemic and months of social distancing. artworxLA is more than just an arts program in alternative education high schools, we are a safe space in which young people can create, challenge themselves, take creative risks and build a positive peer group. Together, we have created a network of educators, artists, creative professional and caring adults and thus a community for the benefit of our students as well as for everyone involved. This year is certainly special as it has been a year of growth, change and adaptability! In the fall and winter months our programming was in 33 alternative education classrooms across Los Angeles County. In March we quickly adapted to a distance-learning model in response to COVID-19 and I am so proud of our staff’s unwavering efforts to support our students and their learning. By using creative measures and the power of partnership, we are continuing to connect students with museums and cultural institutions in Los Angeles and provide them with summer scholarship and internship opportunities. By including our students’ voices in our city’s conversations, we are exposing the larger population to different perspectives, different points of view and embracing more inclusive practices. I am so proud to lead this organization alongside our amazing Staff and Board into our 29th year. Together we can ensure that the arts remain an integral part of our students’ education and that a pathway to creative industries is clearly paved. Thank you for being a part of the creative solution.

WHEN ART WORKS, WE ALL BENEFIT! With gratitude,

Shelby Williams-Gonzalez Executive Director

“If you are neutral in situations of injustice, you have chosen the side of the oppressor.” —Desmond Tutu

BLACKLIVESMATTER. artworxLA stands with the thousands of peaceful protestors that demand to be heard in the streets across our nation. We celebrate the lives of George Floyd, Ahmaud Abery and Breonna Taylor and the thousands of people that have died at the hands of the police. The last 12 weeks have revealed the ugliest parts of our broken nation and brought to the surface the inequities that too many of us have grown accustomed to. Not only is the pandemic killing us in larger numbers, but it is just a backdrop to systemic racism that we all know exists. It’s just that we can film it more easily and blast it on social media. As a Black woman and as a mother of a Black child watching the continual destruction of our bodies takes a toll on our emotional and mental psyche. Too often we as Black people and People of Color do the “dance of comfortability” placing our needs, our voices, and our whole selves in a secondary position to ensure the comfort of others.

THIS MUST STOP. See our Blackness and stand beside us, not just when it is convenient but ALL the time. Change only comes with consistency and we need everyone to be disciplined in the war on racism. And it is a war, because not everyone is willing to accept the inevitable change and the power shift. To my fellow POC, we must speak out and speak up against the anti-Blackness that exists within our own communities. Let’s raise each other up and abolish the internalized ramification of our racialized systems. We will not return to a “Pre-COVID” world. It was not working for everyone, and artworxLA will not stand for a system that is designed to favor some over others. artworxLA will actively work to dismantle racism, white supremacy and anti-Blackness sentiment in our communities. artworxLA will not stand for systemic racism. artworxLA will not perpetuate our flawed modus operandi. The looting over the last few nights is unfortunate but my hope is that everyone is seeing the root cause for the protests as the necessary action of the unheard and overlooked. The looting is wrong. But it is the secondary issue. When the protests slow what are we going to do? As President Obama said in his statement, “How do we turn our anguish into action?” How has George Floyd’s murder changed how you navigate through this life? There is work to be done by all of us as individual leaders in our own communities and we can lean on one another to do this together. Large and small. Strategic systems change to daily actions. From your offices and work cultures; honestly examining your power dynamics and hierarchical structures - to how you vote this November. We all must do our part. Black Lives Matter. Love to you all. Stay safe. Shelby June 3, 2020

VISION artworxLA, formerly The HeArt Project, envisions a world where all alternative high school students graduate from high school, thrive into adulthood, and propel all society with their unique creativity.

MISSION artworxLA combats the epidemic high school dropout crisis by engaging students in a long-term, sequential arts program offering a pursuable life path that inspires them to stay in school, evolve as unique individuals and flourish as creative adults. We achieve this by: • Creatively educating alternative high school teenagers with sustained arts exposure and immersion • Connecting students to a network of peers, artists, cultural partners, higher education, creative industries, and supportive adults • Investing human and financial resources around ongoing, persistent student and alumni support

CORE VALUES Alternative high school students are intelligent, creative and powerful people. They possess the capacity to meet the highest expectations and are full of creative impulse. • Art is indispensable, enables us to communicate, and inspires an empathetic society. • Cultivating effective partnerships between artists, educators and community organizations amplifies our collective impact on the students we serve. • Our society is stronger and more inclusive when our students have full and equal access to its resources and can contribute their own voice. • Lasting change in our students and communities requires long-term investment. • Successful work in the community starts with a creative, participatory and respectful artworxLA workplace. • We expect our students to contribute their own voice to the city given full and equal access to its resources.

artworxLA LADDER & PROGRAMS

Each year, artworxLA brings a “ladder” of arts-based dropout prevention programs to approximately 1,000 students enrolled in 33 alternative high school classrooms across L.A. County. In partnership with working artists, cultural centers, art venues, and institutions of higher learning, our structure of progressive arts opportunities offers promising youth at risk of dropping out of high school the chance to re-engage in their education and reclaim their future.

DESIGN + MEDIA ARTS ACADEMY

Based on its Creative Careers Pathway Model, artworxLA’s Academy provides focused arts education and core subject instruction to prepare alternative HS students for college/career in a city where 20% of jobs are in the creative economy (Otis Report on the Creative Economy, 2020). In September 2018, artworxLA partnered with LAUSD’s Central Continuation HS to open a new Design & Media Arts Academy (DMMA) at its John Adams branch, a 50student pilot school in the South Park area of Los Angeles with an arts-integrated curriculum. The global design firm, Gensler, donated their services to help us achieve our vision for the site. Students can produce sophisticated work in the new Media Arts Lab, outfitted with computers, laptops, cameras and podcasting equipment with soundproofing room. A large gymnasium is being repurposed to serve as a Collaborative Space, with mobile desk units, dry-erase partitions, lounge areas, collaborative media and workstations to create levels throughout the room, and a reading nook. DMMA students receive a full academic curriculum balanced with four days of industry-based arts training that supports the Career and Technical Education (CTE) pathway. Four artworxLA Teaching Artists lead hands-on courses during the school day in photography, documentary film, podcasting, and printmaking. LAUSD Instructor Denise Gaberman teaches foundational classes for aspiring professionals in media pre-production, production and postproduction stages. They learn skills such as media creation using Adobe and Ableton; setup and breakdown of camera, sound, and lighting equipment; principles of storytelling; planning and creation of a studio production; and editing production projects. Academy students are invited to participate in the L1 workshop series and presentrd their projects in 2019/20 at the Skirball Cultural Center, Fowler Museum at UCLA and Vincent Price Art Museum.

PATHWAYS FOR TRANSITION AGE YOUTH

The Education Corps Pico-Union high school continues to grow as a model for intensive arts education for Transition Age Youth, by providing students with programming in graphic design, screen printing, and visual arts. With each day of their artistic engagement, students grow their creative skills and develop a wealth of transferable knowledge. In addition to workshops that focus on digital content and 21st-Century skills, artworxLA provides the school with interactive speaker engagements. Professionals from creative industries inspire students to seek out creative careers and expose them to the range of jobs in the arts in Los Angeles.
