Cynthia Campoy Brophy Founder and Executive Director

Dear Friends: Thank you for 26 years of memories, friendships, community. At this, my last gala, I celebrate the creative network we have built and the young people our network supports.

For 26 years, we have used the arts to re-engage our most vulnerable youth in their education and their lives. Our students, who struggle against age-inappropriate obstacles, have motivated and inspired me and I have learned from their resiliency and their tenacity.

I am grateful to the numerous teaching artists who have brought their passion and expertise into our classrooms. Our partner classroom teachers create a welcoming space for us to weave the arts into our students’ school day.

I have deep gratitude to our fabulous staff for their commitment to our students. Our staff has earned our students’ trust and they feel safe taking creative risks to develop their talents and nurture their self-esteem. Our staff drive our students to MOCA Teen Night, help them with their college portfolios, listen and talk them through their many challenges.

I send thanks to our wonderful Board of Directors, a great group of dedicated people from a diverse range of professions and backgrounds. Our board meetings are always lively, bringing together diverse opinions and questions, all in service of a greater good. Our network of impressive supporters, many of whom are gala sponsors, help make this work possible.

My greatest gratitude goes to our students. I am proud when I see Dominique, who struggles with aggression, speak at the California State PTA convention about the positive influence the arts has had on her education; when Alfredo takes advantage of the many opportunities artworxLA has provided him and presents his artwork at USC Fisher Museum and at the Huntington Library; when Jonathan comes daily to our office to create new music on our equipment.

And now it is time to step away. I could not be more proud to hand the role of Executive Director to my 10-year work partner, dear friend, trusted colleague, Matrushka-loving fan Shelby Williams-Gonzalez. I look forward to watching with loving eyes where Shelby and our outstanding staff and board take artworxLA next.

Thank you for this journey. Thank you for supporting our students to use the arts to nurture their innate uniqueness and share it with all of us. Thank you or opening your networks and providing access for our students to flourish.

Andy Cohen Co-CEO, Gensler

Andy Cohen, FAIA is one of two Gensler Co-CEOs, whose collaborative leadership model sets itself apart in the marketplace as the #1 ranked global design firm, with $1.2 billion in revenue in 2016. For his innovative leadership, he and Co-CEO Diane Hoskins rank on Business Insider’s elite “Creators” list, awho’s who of the world’s 100 top creative visionaries.

A hands-on leader, Andyoversees Gensler’s global platform and its day-to-day operations, some 5,500+people networked across 47 offices, serving clients in 120+ countries.

A champion of design, resiliency and sustainability, Andy is Chair of Gensler’s Board of Directors, spearheading design excellence strategies across Gensler’s 31 diverse practice areas.

Andy has been a speaker at many premier industry conferences, including the Urban Land Institute (ULI), Milken Institute Global Conference, Pension Real Estate Association (PREA) and TEDx. Andy is an active Board Member of the Fisher Center for Real Estate and Urban Economics and the UCLA Institute of the Environment and Sustainability. Curren D. Price, Jr. Councilmember, 9th District City of Los Angeles

Born and raised in South Los Angeles, Curren D. Price, Jr. is proud of his roots, and his public service experience has consistently stood up for working-class families.

In 2013, he was elected to represent the Los Angeles 9th Council District with a focus on economic development, cleaning up neighborhoods, tackling blight and advocating for more resources and services. He was re-elected for another term in March 2017.

In his role as City Councilmember, Price is the Chair of the Council’s Economic Development Committee, and serves on the committees on Planning and Land Use Management (PLUM); Homelessness and Poverty; Immigrant Affairs, Civil Rights, and Equity; Arts, Entertainment, Parks, and River; Personnel and Animal Welfare, as well as the Ad-Hoc Committee on the 2028 Olympics and Paralympic Games.

He launched his decades-long career in 1993 as a public servant on the Inglewood City Council. Price then went on to serve in the California State Legislature as an Assemblymember in 2006 where he served as the Chair of the Assembly Committee on Elections and Redistricting and Committee on Governmental Organization. In 2009, as a State Senator, he chaired the Business and Professions Committee and was chosen by his colleagues to lead the California Legislative Black Caucus, as Chair, in 2010.

In his current post as Los Angeles City Councilman, Price has a personal commitment to bettering the lives of low-income families and children. In 2014, he introduced policy to raise the wage for hotel workers to $15.37 per hour. One year later, he led the fight to raise the minimum wage to $15 by 2020. In addition, Price played a key role in the adoption of a citywide policy requiring employers to offer 48 hours of paid sick leave per year.

MISSION. artworxLA combats the epidemic high school dropout crisis by engaging students in a long-term, sequential arts program offering a pursuable life path that inspires them to stay in school, evolve as unique individuals and flourish as creative adults.

We achieve this by: • Creatively educating alternative high school teenagers with sustained arts exposure and immersion • Connecting students to a network of peers, artists, cultural partners, higher education, creative industries, and supportive adults • Investing human and financial resources around ongoing, persistent student and alumni support

FROM HIGH SCHOOL DROPOUT TO ENGAGED GRADUATE While California’s graduation rate reached 82% in 2015, rates for Los Angeles’ continuation high school students can be as low as 10%. These students are disengaged and struggling with life circumstances that push school attendance far down their priority list. Without a diploma, they will earn $500,000 less than a graduate over a lifetime and are six times more likely to be incarcerated or enter the criminal justice system – 82%of U.S. inmate are high school dropouts. The negative effects extend well beyond these students and their families, as the state loses $1 billion in lost tax revenue and incurs $1 billion in incarceration costs.

THE artworxLA LADDER

Each year, artworxLA brings a “ladder” of arts-based dropout prevention programs to approximately 650 students enrolled in 29 alternative high school classrooms across L.A. County.

In partnership with working artists, cultural centers, art venues and institutions of higher learning, our structure of progressive arts opportunities offers promising youth at risk of dropping out of high school the chance to re-engage in their education and reclaim their future.

LA EDUCATION CORPS MUSIC & DESIGN ACADEMY The Education Corps at Pico-Union high school continues to grow and evolve as a model for intensive arts education in the alternative high school setting. LA Education Corps provides students with programming in music production, graphic design, visual arts, and animation. With each day of their artistic engagement, students grow their creative skills and develop a wealth knowledge which is often transferable. In addition to workshops that focus on digital content and 21st-century skills, artworxLA provides the school with interactive speaker engagements. Professionals from creative industries inspire students to seek out creative careers and expose them to the range of jobs in the arts in Los Angeles.

artworxLA provides a weekly presence in 29 alternative high school classrooms from Sylmar to Lynwood and San Dimas to Mar Vista. Inspired by the programs and exhibitions at cultural partner institutions such as The Getty Villa, LACMA, the LA Opera, and the Natural History Museum, our students explore common themes through various art forms and then present or perform their final works at these worldrenowned cultural treasures. Our 2017–18 cultural partners are the Autry Museum of the American West, the Los Angeles Public Library, and the Japanese American National Museum (JANM). We are proud to serve the alternative education students of Los Angeles Unified School District, the Los Angeles County Office of Education, Culver City Unified School District, Compton Unified School District, Pasadena Unified School District, Inyo County Office of Education, and Lynwood Unified School District.

ALUMNI HIGHLIGHTS

Alfredo Alvarado graduated from artworxLA programming at Frida Kahlo High

School in 2013 and has remained an active participant in the arts. As an arts advocate and activist, his achievements include speaking on the reinvention of high schools for Project XQ, sharing his view of the “American Dream” for PBS’s Re: Dream Project and being a keynote speaker for TED Talks: Education Revolution. As an emerging artist, Alfredo recently received a residency at Penland School of crafts, where he learned woodworking and producing lamps from found objects.He has also been a part of the artist-in-residence at USC’s Fisher Museum.

Alfredo has exhibited at the Annenberg Community Beach House and the Huntington Botanical Library for the PST LA/LA initiative. Alfredo is currently co-editing with Art Division and ArtCenter’s Social Justice Project to produce a magazine focused on queer and trans artists.

Abraham Lizama graduated from the Hollywood Media Arts Academy in 2015. As

an aspiring musician, he has developed his skills in artworxLA workshops with Street Poets and the CalArts Summer Art Program. Abraham composes, writes lyrics, plays guitar, and uses Ableton to mix music. Currently, Abraham is taking courses in music theory at Santa Monica College. Abraham serves as artworxLA’s Alumni Representative on our Board of Directors.

Blanca Martinez graduated in 2013 from Pueblo de Los Angeles High School.

After graduating high school, Blanca went to study photography at San Francisco Art Institute.

Blanca’s interests in photography blossomed from her experiences at artworxLA, especially her experiences with Art Center at Night, Summer Institutes at UCLA, and Summer of Art at Otis College of Art Design, all of which she received scholarships for as part of artworxLA’s Advanced Programs.. Blanca is interested in all subjects’ photography and is articulateabout artists she’s following. Blanca is dedicated to pursuing her interests in photography.

Stephen Na graduated from artworxLA’s Hollywood Media Arts Academy in 2013. Prior

to HMAA, he attended Fairfax High School where he had lots of work to catch up on, and no time for art. He was redirected to artworxLA’s Hollywood Media Arts Academy where he started making art as part of the school curriculum. After graduating, he was encouraged to enroll at Santa Monica College where he continued studying art. Inspired by the animation and design aesthetics of Asia, he explores character development and environmental concepts, merging his broad interests of biology, chemistry, astrology, ancient history, and historical science. Stephen is currently enrolled at ArtCenter College of Design full-time and is taking classes in painting and composition, design, materials, and humanities. He is in the process of choosing his major and is leaning towards entertainment arts, with a focus on animation film production.

Itzel Flores graduated from LA Education Corps- Pico Union, the home of the

artworxLA Academy for Visual Arts and Design. Before joining artworxLA, Itzel had lost interest in school and found herself hanging out with a neighborhood crew. After realizing the long-term negative outcomes of being affiliated with her crew, she decided to reinvest in her education and enrolled in Pico-Union. Itzel enrolled in art education courses with artworxLA and found the arts provided positive choices and experiences to help her graduate with a plan.

Through artworxLA, Itzel completed Advanced Level courses in leadership, film, and music production. She was also one of artworxLA’s first cohort of interns taking her leadership skills to the next level. Eager to develop her professional work skills Itzel enrolled in training courses with the National Retail Federation and has begun working at an after-school program where she teaches young people art.

STUDENT HIGHLIGHTS

Dominique Lawhead Prior to joining artworxLA, Dominique was unmotivated

by school and battled with self-esteem issues. After joining artworxLA’s programs at Amelia Earhart, she was able to find a passion for school from the creative workshops she attended.

Through artworxLA, she has participated in music residencies with Young Producers Group and 2 fashion residency with Otis College of Art and Design. Eager to explore her creative interests in architecture, Dominique participated in USC’s summer scholarship program in architecture and design in the summer of 2017. Dominique is currently our Student Representative on our Board of Directors and is going to graduate in June 2018.

Gienerya Lai joined artworxLA in March of 2017. Rising quickly in our program,

Gienerya has completed Advanced Program residencies in Fashion Design, Music Production and Filmmaking. Passionate about performance and theater, she completed a Summer intensive with the Actors Gang in Summer 2017. Gieneyra’s creative interests in illustration have led her to produce a collection of drawing which she has exhibited at Grand Performances during their 2017 Summer Concert Series. In the winter of 2018 Gieneyra was accepted to Ryman Art’s 12-week Foundation drawing course hosted at Otis College of Art and Design.

Jonathan Santos joined artworxLA programming at Bellevue high school in

Spring of 2017. Prior to learning of our programs, Jonathan struggled to find his place in school because the classes offered to him lacked the creative outlet he desired. A child of a musician, Jonathan found interests in programs that offered him a space to develop his music skills. Jonathan quickly registered in our Music Residency with Young Producers Group after learning about our Advanced Program offerings. As a current participant in artworxLA’s internship program, Jonathan has connected with additional opportunities with The House of Blues and the Music Forward Foundation. Through these groups, Jonathan has expanded his network of peers who support his musical endeavors. On track to graduate this year, Jonathan plans on taking courses in music and zoology when he’s accepted into college.

Lorraine Ferrera Lorraine is currently a student at Culver Park HS. Through

artworxLA, Lorraine has exhibited her art at Los Angeles Public Library, the Los Angeles Theater, and the Autry Museum of the American West. Inspired by her experiences, Lorraine decided to challenge her skills as an illustrator by enrolling in artworxLA’s Visual Arts residency at ArtCenter College. Lorraine’s persistence to develop her drawing techniques has led to a fully-funded scholarship to ArtCenter College’s Teen Summer 2018 Program. Currently on track to graduate high school, Lorraine looks forward to developing her creative skills as an illustrator while she pursues career opportunities after she graduates.

Kimberly Villalobos Before joining artworxLA programming, Kimberly felt that

the education she was receiving in high school had no value and was only taught to pass her along to the next gradel. Feeling unmotivated, she fell behind in credits and lost interest in graduating. Kimberly was able to reinvest in her education by joining artworxLA programming at Culver Park High School. After completing 2 years of artworxLA’s Level 1 workshops, Kimberly decided to deepen her connection to our programs by joining our Advanced Programs courses in Leadership and Fashion Design. Kimberly is looking forward graduating this year and plans to enroll at Santa Monica College. Before attending college in the fall, Kimberly plans on joining Otis College of Art and Design’s Summer of Art scholarship program to explore fashion design

Dear Cynthia, My being the first school to have artworxLA incorporated in my program proved to be quite challenging. It is not discernible to most, but learning Physics is a lot easier than having one’s heart and soul exposed through art. Gradually the students became more confident and stronger emotionally.

They not only tackled their innermost demons, but were able to tackle other challenges in life, including wanting to be a productive citizen.

Your artists worked with the biggest, “baddest” gang bangers who wore bells on their bare feet, learning an ancient dance of India, to a total, positive transformation. It truly was a complete metamorphosis. You saved lives.
