HIS year’s Welsh Game Fair, returning to Pembrey Country Park on Saturday and Sunday, June 20 and 21, promises to surpass all previous records. All the usual attractions will be available including the clay pigeon layout which will again boast both Sporting and Down The Line competitions throughout the weekend. In addition, the have a go facility which proved so popular in 2014 has been expanded to form a bigger part of the layout.

As a countryside event, ferreting, fishing, falconry, airguns, archery and lots more will play an essential part of the event over the weekend.

The gundog scurry will also run for both days with a good layout for the handlers and excellent viewing for the spectators.

Adjacent to the gundog scurry area the popular fishing activities will take place with the newly constructed, purpose built casting pool enabling

budding anglers to cast a fly on the water. World, European and British casting champion, Hywel Morgan will be running demonstrations. The Welsh Salmon and Trout Association marquee will be one of the many found in the Fisherman’s Row range of stands. Elsewhere over 200 trade stands will be in attendance selling and displaying an impressive array of goods.

Campsite is just a stone’s throw away THE 2015 Welsh Game Fair campsite will again be located just 50 yards from the Fair site. Camping pitches are limited, must be booked in advance and will be allocated on a first come, first served basis.

The non-refundable fee is £25 per camping pitch, each of which can accommodate a maximum of four adults for the duration of the Fair.

Also, new for this year’s show, a discounted rate

of entry will be offered for those who camp on site and intend to spend both days at the event.

Adult prices will be cut from £25 to just £20 while senior citizens and children aged 5-16 will pay £15 (previously £20)

and £5 (previously £10) respectively. As always, children under the age of five will be permitted free entry.

THE Welsh Game Fair has now established itself at Pembrey Country Park, which many describe as the jewel in the crown of West Wales.

The location boasts superb facilities which include scenic surroundings, tarmacadam roads and sandy soil underfoot and has enabled the Fair to finds its permanent home. Acres of space will once again allow camping facilities within the venue and car parks will surround the site.

The new traffic system, operated for the first time last year, will also continue in 2015. Coloured identifiable wristbands will be handed to all attendees at the payment lanes and must be worn to gain admittance to the Fair.

Please note that all wristbands will be scrutinised at the foot entrances to the event.

Meet the lurcher and terrier judges TERRIER JUDGES THIS year at the Welsh Game Fair the invited terrier judges are Johnny Johnson from Pontypridd and Jack Jones from Herefordshire. Johnny comes to the Welsh with a huge amount of experience and goodwill having kept and bred terriers for 52 years.

Not only has he done sterling work pre-ban for the Llanboidy Hunt and the Carmarthen Farmers Hunt, he has also worked his terriers freelance for more years than he cares to remember. In addition, he has bred and kept some very good looking terriers. Over the years he has enjoyed considerable success including winning Puppy Champion at the Welsh in 2011. He currently kennels nine Jack Russells and is delighted to be officiating.

Judging the coloured terriers is Jack Jones who started hunting on a pony at a very young age with the Golden Valley.

He quickly moved into terriers and became a countryman at the Clifton-on-Teme and North Hereford Hunt.

Jack also kennels nine terriers, all either black or chocolate coloured and nowadays derived almost exclusively from the Dave Finlay lines. He only occasionally exhibits himself due to work commitments but is also looking forward to judging at the Welsh.

LURCHER JUDGES THE Welsh Game Fair is once again delighted to announce it will maintain the tradition of inviting working lurcher owners to officiate

for 2015. Paul Dooley from Cheshire and Wayne Thomas from Cwmbran will judge The Countryman’s Weekly Lurcher Show.

Paul was born and bred in Merseyside and now resides in Cheshire. He is well-known as a contributor to sporting publications and has kept lurchers all his life. In the past he has kept, among others, Bedlington and collie crosses, while he currently owns a Kelpie cross.

Pre-ban he has hunted rabbit, blue and brown hare, fox and feathered game with his lurchers. His main activities now consist of ferreting, lamping and daytime hunting. Paul will judge the over 23” lurchers.

Wayne Thomas is a farmer and livery yard owner from Cwmbran. He has kept and worked lurchers for over 40 years, during which time he kennelled both Deerhound/ Greyhound and collie/Greyhound types. He also used to exhibit at the old Lambourn Show many years ago.

He is enthusiastic regarding the working qualities of the lurcher and along with Paul Dooley brings a wealth of experience to the role. Wayne will judge the under 23” classes.

Fascinating display

Ye Olde Redtail Falconry YE Olde Redtail Falconry will be bringing the ancient art of falconry to the modern age with a comprehensive and thrilling display.

Ray and Wendy Aliker present a display like no other using music, costume and showmanship to illustrate the grace and majesty of the birds in flight.

Filled with audience participation, the display shows the natural attributes and abilities of the birds, how they live, fly and hunt in the wild.

Ye Olde Redtail Falconry is one of the most well-known and memorable display teams in the UK. Ray’s childhood interest in caged birds developed into a full-time falconry career and together he and Wendy have been appearing at shows up and down the country for over 20 years.

They have put together a show that is fantastic for all ages, especially children, and audiences will get a chance to see birds of prey like the Barn Owl and Harris Hawk at their most exciting.

RETURNING to this year’s Fair for the 19th year will be Chris ‘the Cornish Countryman’ Green. Chris was born in the West Country and spent his youth bird nesting, rabbit catching and living off the fat of the land.

He has a lifelong passion for fishing and shooting and built his first gun undercover at school. He has built his own gunning punt and punt gun for wildfowling which he still uses today.

He learned the ways of wildfowling and pigeon shooting from the age of 11.

Chris can be found during the day between demonstrations at the BASC pigeon stand. There he will be on hand to answer any questions on wildfowling, pigeon shooting and longnetting, or just to have a chat.

His Main Arena demonstrations will include wildfowling and longnetting. During the wildfowling display, along with his yellow Labrador, ‘Jake’, Chris will guide the audience through the life of a wildfowler. It is midwinter, freezing cold, the time is 5am on a wild, lonely estuary and the tide is coming in.

His longnetting display is a truly fascinating insight into the long forgotten art of longnetting rabbits. In his usual style Chris will be demonstrating how he sets his nets in the dead of night in absolute silence.

Hound Show attracts the largest gathering THE Welsh Game Fair will play host to the largest gathering of hounds in the country when the annual Hound Show is held on Saturday, June 20.

Over 30 packs of hounds will fill two rings under the experienced eyes of the judges and there will be classes for English, Welsh, Hill and Fell Hounds. Two special classes will also be held on the day for terriers associated with the packs exhibiting hounds at the show.

The best turned out handler of hounds will also be presented with a special award.

In addition to the overall championships in each section,

the coveted inscribed hunting horn is awarded to the overall Champion Hound in Show which is determined from the four individual section winners. The invited judges for 2015 are John Charles Jones MFH, Gwyn Jones MFH from the Gogerddan Hunt, and Ashley Hubbard, Kennel Huntsman to the Fox River Valley Hunt, in Illinois, USA. John Charles Jones is a man who will need no introduction to most of the faithful participants at the Hound Show. He restarted the Llangeitho and Gogerddan Hunt in Mid-Wales and has produced numerous influential Welsh Hounds who have excelled, not

He will be welcomed back after judging the Welsh Game Fair nearly 20 years ago when he was both Master and Huntsman to his native Gogerddan Hunt.

A knowledgeable and keen exponent of bloodlines within the native Welsh breed, during his career John Charles has produced influential Welsh Hounds who were exceptional in their work. Joining John Charles in the ring will be his Joint Master, Gwyn Jones, who has himself hunted the Gogerddan on a few occasions over the past two seasons.

Ashley’s professional career began in 2002 with his appointment as Huntsman to the Glyn Celyn Beagles. After the ban came into force Ashley left the UK for Canada as a whip to the Toronto and North York Hounds. Two years later he became Huntsman to the Hamilton Hunt prior to moving to his current position in America.

Gundog demonstrations by BASC THE British Association for Shooting and Conservation (BASC) Wales gundog demonstration shows how anyone can train any dog to a good standard for the shooting field which is what the majority of gundog owners require.

Meurig Rees has worked for BASC as a country officer since 2005 and first developed this idea 7½ years ago for their Young Shots and Ladies Day programme.

It has blossomed since by being featured at the Welsh Game Fair and numerous

other similar events across Wales.

With plenty of hints and tips the display shows how the average individual with time, patience and consistence can develop a young dog into a great working companion on their shooting days.

Visitors can also meet Meurig and his two Labradors, ‘Ceri’ and ‘Skye’, in person at the BASC marquee.

There he will answer any questions and allow adults and children to have pictures taken with the dogs.

SIMON Bond and Cariad Ferrets will return to this year’s Welsh Game Fair for the second time.

With the help of his Welsh speaking daughter, Fay, Simon will give an introduction to ferrets and a basic working demonstration to appeal to an audience of all ages and levels of experience.

As well as becoming involved in country shows and the running of ferret shows in South Wales and the West Country, Simon has spent the last few years judging various ferret shows.

Between demonstrations he will be on hand to chat and offer tips and advice to anyone who wishes to come along and see the team. There will even be the chance for people to get up close and personal with the ferrets and nets that Simon uses and works. This will include the chance to handle a few of the ferrets under Simon’s supervision.

Breathtaking aerial tricks from Jason Smyth THE UK’s top quad bike stunt rider, Jason Smyth, Adrenaline Tour is sure to have audiences watching in awe as he flies over 30 feet high from ramp to ramp while performing breathtaking aerial tricks.

The Adrenaline Tour display offers quad freestyle, catching items of memorabilia in mid-air and awarding them to spectators, and the popular street style tricks where the action is brought up close to the crowd.

Jason, a former world championship motocross rider, presents an informative and humorous commentary via a microphone in his helmet as he completes his stunts.

He will interact with the audience even while flying 70 feet through the air to get everyone involved in the show.

The entertainment does not end there either as a display unit will allow the public to see the machines, chat with the team and even sit on one of the quad bikes.

WELSH GAME

Quack Packed full of laughs MEIRION Owen and the Quack Pack is a sheepdog and duck demonstration showcasing the amazing talents of Border Collies and the communication between handler and dog.

This Main Arena demonstration is informative, educational, highly entertaining and interactive allowing hands-on adult and children participation.

Meirion provides his own humorous commentary as he uses a combination of commands to guide his dogs and co-operative (and sometimes unco-operative) Indian Runner ducks around a course which includes tunnels, slides and pens.

A farmer born and bred, Meirion has been around Border Collies all his life and is an accomplished and respected sheepdog handler, judge and event organiser.

He started sheepdog trialling at the age of nine and has since gone on to win many trials including the Welsh National Sheepdog Championship.

Meirion and the Quack Pack tour the country performing at regional and national shows as well as private events and provide customised team building programmes for a range of corporate clients.

FAIR

Family fishing fun with Hywel RETURNING to this year’s show, world, European and British casting champion, Hywel Morgan, will be taking advantage of the purpose-built casting lake which will have continuous activities all weekend.

His fly-casting demos, with daughters, Yasmin and Tanya Morgan, will show everybody fishing can be

fun and is for the whole family.

The heats for the Welsh National Pairs Championships will be held over the weekend with the top 12 casters qualifying for the final, which will be held at the Royal Welsh Show.

Members of the bank and ladies team will also be tying flies and giving advice on all types of fishing.

Madcap fun with Dingle Fingle

ENTERTAINMENT is guaranteed for all who visit the Main Arena to watch Dingle Fingle’s comedy car slapstick stunt show.

The Clown Town Crime Watch act sees undercover policeman, Dingle Fingle, going all out to catch classic car thief, Slippery Sid. The audience is the Clown Town Crime Watch and Dingle Fingle needs your help in this action packed show.

The act features two madcap stunt clowns, moving car stunts, quad stunts, drifts, donuts, precision driving and high speed crosses. So, join Dingle Fingle and help stop Slippery Sid once and for all.

Displays and activities for all the family THIS year’s Welsh Game Fair will have a plethora of fantastic events, displays and activities to keep all visitors entertained.

Members of the Dinefwr and District Stickmakers Guild will be demonstrating stickmaking throughout the day on Saturday. There will be a spectacular display of walking sticks including shepherds crooks and market and thumb sticks for sale and the chance for people to have a go at making sticks themselves.

The West Wales Koi Keepers Society will be holding their

20th annual koi carp show which will provide the opportunity for visitors to see some outstanding koi.

There will be judging and presentation of awards to members for Best Koi in various categories including Grand Champion.

Simulated coursing demonstrations will take place on both Saturday and Sunday in the Main Arena. Visitors with dogs are encouraged to participate in what is often a popular event.

As always the Children’s Corner will be bursting

with fantastic activities to keep younger audiences enthralled throughout the show. Bouncy castles, quad bikes, fairground rides and a whole host of other entertaining activities will be going on.

There will also be some great have a go activities.

These include archery with the Cymric Archers and shooting with Penrhiwpal Shooting Club, both of which will be present on both days, offering the chance for the whole family to get involved.
