Pembrey Country Park THE new venue for the Welsh, Pembrey Country Park, has been described by many as the jewel in the crown of West Wales. It is certainly eminently suitable to provide a permanent and long-term home for the Welsh Game Fair. The location in superb, scenic surroundings with tarmacadam roads winding through the site and superb sandy soil underfoot will mean the days of inclement weather hampering preparation and making testing conditions for those that attend a distant memory. Acres of space allow the camping facilities to be located within the venue and car parks will surround the Fair. The infrastructure is designed for the enjoyment of those that loyally attend the Fair year after year and for first time visitors who will no doubt find the experience unique. A new system will be operating this year where coloured wristbands will be handed out at the payment lanes which must be worn to gain admittance to the fair.

Getting to the Welsh THE Country Park can be found just off the A484 Llanelli to Carmarthen coast road just outside Burry Port. The Park is approximately a 30 minute drive from Carmarthen and a similar distance from Junction 48 on the M4. Follow the yellow/brown directional signs.

The gundog scurry will run on both days with a good layout for the handlers and excellent viewing for the spectators.

Make the Welsh a long weekend! THIS year’s campsite is located just 50 yards from the Game Fair site so there is no need to worry about transport between the two locations. Camping pitches will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis and must be booked in advance. There is a non-refundable fee of £25 per camping pitch, each of which can

IN keeping with the tradition of inviting working dog men to judge, The Welsh has invited two lurchermen from Northumberland for 2014 who will need no introduction in the world of lurcher owners. Alan Sankey and Gareth Bickerton, from Lynton and Lynemouth, will officiate at The Countryman’s Weekly lurcher show on Sunday, June 15, at Pembrey Country Park. The former is arguably one of the most respected pre-ban lurcher coursers in history. Alan Sankey has kept running dogs since he was a child, running a whippet over the pit and slag heaps of his mining surroundings during his formative years. He deviated towards lurchers nearly 30 years ago when he owned a Saluki cross Greyhound bitch which, when mated to a dog from Manchester, produced his famous bitch ‘Dancer’. This bitch’s achievements are unsurpassed and, among others, she won The Calendar 16 dog stake, The

Dorwest Herbs sponsor terrier and lurcher events DORWEST Herbs have actively supported lurcher and terrier shows for many years throughout the UK and this year at the Welsh, they are supplying prizes for Champion and reserve winners. Roly Boughton, marketing manager for Dorwest Herbs, said: “We are extremely proud to be major sponsors of the Welsh Game Fair terrier and lurcher events for 2014 in association with The Countryman’s Weekly. “Dorwest Herbs have been supplying high quality herbal medicines and supplements for working dogs for over 60 years and we are thrilled that we are sponsoring this prestigious event which supports the working dog fraternity.”

Meet the Lurcher judges! Temple Brewer, the North East competition and many matches. The pinnacle of her career was probably in 1998 when she won the British Double Handed Championship on a Saturday and the following Saturday won the British Single Handed Championship (The Foley Cup). ‘Dancer’ was the only lurcher to beat the equally capable ‘Foxy’ in the Foley Cup final, the last two of 24 of the best coursing lurchers in the country. 'Dancer' was then mated to ‘Foxy’s’ brother ‘Nipper’ and bred ‘Blondie’ who again emulated the achievements of her dam by winning the Foley Cup in 2000 and finishing second twice in other years. It was a truly fantastic career for a brilliant bitch and a tribute to the conditioning skills of her handler.

Since the hunting ban, Alan Sankey still carefully maintains his original line but now concentrates on rabbiting and lamping in the Northumberland area. Gareth Bickerton has kept lurchers for over 20 years and currently kennels three. His dogs are again derived from the lines of his co-judge and he finds them more than suited for the local terrain that they encounter. He has lamped since he began to keep lurchers but similarly enjoys working his lurchers during daylight hours ferreting and mooching. Both are looking forward to judging at The Welsh. Alan will judge the over 23 inches while Gareth will officiate in the under 23 inches ring.

The invited terrier judges at the Welsh Game Fair this year are Scott Garrett and Jason Powell. Scott has spent a lifetime with terriers and hounds including hunting his own shooting pack in Wales. He also assisted at many hunts including the VWH for a number of seasons. Over the past seven seasons

Meet the terrier judges! he has been employed by the Portman Hunt as their countryman. He currently kennels around a dozen terriers, most of which are Russells, which originated some 25 years ago from 'Toby,' an outstanding dog of Paul Travers, and Scott has continued to maintain the line which produces workers of a high standard. He has judged extensively all over the country and

as far afield as the United States of America. His appointment maintains the tradition at the Welsh of inviting working dog men to officiate. Jason Powell, from Newport, South Wales is a name familiar throughout the country for his working terriers. He is also the singularly most successful exhibitor in the history of the Welsh having won numerous classes, puppy Championships and the Overall Championship a remarkable three times in the last 20 years. Having been involved in terriers all his life when his father took him out, he began with Russell types prior to changing to coloured around 25 years ago. His original bitch of the line that he has developed and keeps was 'Boozer' and future generations were nurtured and evolved as he required. His famous dog 'Samson' proved a dominant and influential sire not only in enhancing the line but perpetuating the qualities that Jason Powell desired. The dog died some months ago aged 14 but his legacy lives on. A professional pest controller, Jason keeps around a dozen terriers with his son, Jack, including pups and saplings. Jason has judged throughout the country but has always declined in the past to judge at the Welsh, not wishing to forgo exhibiting at the fair. This year, however, he accepted the invitation and looks forward to the new venue. Scott Garrett will judge Russells while Jason Powell will be judging the coloureds. The terrier show takes place on Sunday, June 15.
