Welkom in Leeuwarden Smûk. Zo beschrijven de Friezen de hoofdstad van Fryslân. Gezellig en mooi. Leeuwarden was niet voor niets de Culturele Hoofdstad van Europa in 2018. Hier komt cultuur, gastvrijheid en gezelligheid samen. Ook in 2020 is de stad weer bomvol gevuld met gave activiteiten en bezienswaardigheden. Kijk voor een overzicht in onze activiteitenkalender. De stad biedt interessante musea, een mooie historische binnenstad met monumenten en grachten en ook bijzondere moderne architectuur. In het centrum kun je een lekker dagje shoppen; in elk straatje ontdek je wel weer een leuk winkeltje. De diversiteit aan horecagelegenheden heeft voor elke fijnproever een goede hap. Probeer het Friese Suikerbrood (Sûkerbôle), een typisch Fries product net zoals Beerenburg en Nagelkaas. Naast de gerechten onderscheidt de provincie zich door de taal, het Fries. Welcome to Leeuwarden Smûk. This is how the Frisians describe the capital of Fryslân. Cozy and beautiful. Leeuwarden was not without reason the European Capital of Culture in 2018. Here's where Culture, hospitality and cosiness come together. In 2020, the city will once again be filled with fun and interesting activities and attractions. Take a look at the overview in our activity calendar. The city offers interesting museums, a beautiful historic city center with monuments and canals and also disinctive modern architecture. Enjoy a day shopping in the city centre; there are cute little shops to be found in every street. The diversity of restaurants and bars offers a good meal for every connoisseur. Try Frisian Sugarloaf (Sûkerbôle), and typical Frisian products like Beerenburg and Nagelkaas. In addition to the dishes, the province distinguishes itself by the language, Frisian. Welkom in Leeuwarden Leeuwarden is een stad ontstaan op drie terpen: Oldehove, Nijehove en hoek. De stad kreeg stadsrechten in 1435, hetzelfde jaar dat de drie terpen samengevoegd werden. De stad kende een gouden tijd in de zestiende en zeventiende eeuw omdat de Nassaus stadhouder werden van de noordelijke provincies. Zij woonden in het Stadhouderlijk hof. Het meest kenmerkende gebouw van de stad is de Oldehove. In 1529 begon de bouw aan de toren, bestemd als kerktoren. Na 10 meter begon de toren al te verzakken. Leeuwarden is het begin en eindpunt van de heroĂŻsche Elfstedentocht, de bijna 200 kilometer lange schaatstocht langs alle Friese steden. In 1997 werd het ijs voor de laatste keer dik genoeg gevonden. Tot 2009 werd in Leeuwarden de Domino Day gehouden, een Guinness Book of Records recordpoging voor het grootst aantal vallende dominostenen. Welcome to Leeuwarden Leeuwarden is a city created on three mounds: Oldehove, Nijehove and Hoek. The city received city rights in 1435, the same year that the three mounds were merged. The city had a golden age in the sixteenth and seventeenth century when the Nassaus became governor of the northern provinces. They lived in the Stadhouderlijk hof. The most characteristic building in the city is the Oldehove. In 1529 construction began on the tower, intended as a church tower but after 10 meters the tower began to sag. Leeuwarden is the start and finish point of the heroic Elfstedentocht, the almost 200 kilometer long skating race trough all Frisian cities. The last time the ice was thick enough was in 1997. Until 2009, the Domino Day was held in Leeuwarden, a Guinness Book of Records record attempt for the largest number of falling dominoes. De Geschiedenis van Leeuwarden In Leeuwarden wonen bijzondere mensen. Nu, maar ook vroeger. Kijk maar naar de manier waarop deze stad is ontstaan. In de 9e eeuw lag Leeuwarden aan de Middelzee. Dat was een strategische plaats want zo konden we via zee handelen tot in Rusland. Maar we hadden toen nog geen dijken en de eerste bewoners kregen regelmatig natte voeten. Wat we deden? We maakten een heuvel en bouwden daar huizen op (een terp).

Probleem opgelost. Toen de Middelzee in de 13e eeuw dichtslibde stonden de vroege Leeuwarders voor een nieuwe uitdaging. Maar ook nu werd er snel geschakeld: in plaats van handel via zee gingen we gewoon handelen in de regio. Intussen woonden de mensen nog wel op de drie terpen die eerder waren gebouwd. Niet zo handig. Daarom werden de terpen samengevoegd en zo ontstond er in 1435 een stad.

The History of Leeuwarden Leeuwarden has extraordinary citizens. Both now, and formerly. Let’s look at how this city came into being. In the ninth century Leeuwarden lay on the Middelzee (Middle Sea) – a strategic place from which we could trade by sea as far as Russia. But back then we had no dykes, so early inhabitants often got their feet wet. So what did we do? Constructed a mound and built houses on it (a ‘terp’). Problem solved. When the Middelzee silted up in the

thirteenth century this presented early Leeuwarders with a new challenge. But a quick shift in thinking resolved this: instead of trading by sea, we started trading within the region, and for the time being people carried on living on the three ‘terpen’ (mounds) that had been constructed earlier. However, this wasn’t actually very practical and so the three mounds were consolidated and in 1435 a city came into being.

De Geschiedenis van Leeuwarden Leeuwarden werd in 1504 uitgeroepen tot hoofdstad van de provincie Friesland. De Friese Nassaus kwamen hier wonen en Leeuwarden werd rijk en machtig. Natuurlijk hoorde hier een grote kerk bij met een hoge toren. In 1529 werd begonnen met het bouwen van de toren, de Oldehove. Een kerk stond er al. Maar al snel bleek de toren te verzakken.

Gewoon recht verder bouwen, dan komt het wel goed. Nee dus. De bouw werd niet afgemaakt. Onze Oldehove staat niet alleen scheef, maar is ook nog krom en heeft geen spits. En toch houden Leeuwarders, bijzonder als ze zijn, zoveel van deze toren dat ze hem nog geen dag kunnen missen.

The History of Leeuwarden In 1504 Leeuwarden was declared the capital city of the province of Friesland. The Frisian Nassaus came to live in Leeuwarden and it became rich and powerful. Naturally this called for a large church with a high tower and in 1529 construction of the Oldehove tower was begun. There was already a church. However, the tower soon showed signs

of collapse. Let’s keep building straight – it’ll be fine. This was not, however, the case and construction was never completed. Our Oldehove doesn’t just lean, it’s also crooked and has no spire. But Leeuwarders, extraordinary as they are, love this tower dearly and wouldn’t be without it.

Terugblik Leeuwarden Leeuwarden is een fijne stad. Niet te groot, niet te klein. Niet te druk, niet te rustig. Alhoewel… er zijn van die dagen dat Leeuwarden in het middelpunt van de belangstelling staat. Of, zoals een echte Leeuwarder zegt: ‘Kest d’r op ‘e koppen wel lope.’. In 2018 is Leeuwarden culturele hoofdstad van Europa. Het bezoek van de Reuzen ligt daarom nog vers in het geheugen. Tienduizenden cultuurliefhebbers laten zich verbazen,

verwonderen en ontroeren door de levensechte poppen van theatergezelschap Royal de Luxe. Ook tijdens 3FM Serious Request in 2013 wordt onze mooie stad overspoeld door een tsunami aan gasten. Allemaal willen ze een blik werpen op de drie dj’s die zich voor het goede doel vrijwillig laten opsluiten in het glazen huis. Met een opbrengst van meer dan € 2 miljoen is de actie een groot succes.

Retrospect Leeuwarden Leeuwarden is a great city. Not too big, not too small. Not too busy, not too quiet. However…there are days when Leeuwarden is the centre of attention. Or, as a true Leeuwarder would say, in the local dialect: “Kest d’r op ‘e koppen wel lope” (it’s so busy you can walk on the heads of the crowd). In 2018 Leeuwarden was the Cultural Capital of Europe. The visit of the Giants is still fresh in our memories. Tens of thousands of culture lovers

came to be amazed, to wonder and be moved by the life-like puppets of the Royal de Luxe theatre company. In 2013, during the charity event 3FM Serious Request, our beautiful city was flooded by a tsunami of guests. They all came to get a look at the three DJs who had agreed to be locked into a glass house for charity. The event was a huge success and raised more than two million euros.

Terugblik Leeuwarden Verder heeft Leeuwarden natuurlijk vaker dagen waarop het dringen geblazen is, zoals Bevrijdingsdag en Koningsdag. Maar ook een festival als Psy-Fi brengt meer dan 10.000 mensen op de been. En tijdens de luchtmachtdagen komen 280.000 enthousiastelingen zich vergapen aan straaljagers en vliegdemonstraties. Maar de moeder aller evenementen is natuurlijk de tocht der tochten: de Elfstedentocht. Deze heroĂŻsche,

200 kilometer lange schaatstocht op natuurijs brengt zomaar anderhalf tot twee miljoen mensen op de been. De tocht voert langs de Friese steden Leeuwarden, Sneek, IJlst, Sloten, Stavoren, Hindeloopen, Workum, Bolsward, Harlingen, Franeker en Dokkum. Als start- en finishplaats zal Leeuwarden bij de volgende Elfstedentocht weer in het middelpunt van de belangstelling staan. Nu maar duimen dat hij snel komt.

Retrospect Leeuwarden There are, of course, other days that draw crowds to Leeuwarden, such as Bevrijdingsdag (Liberation Day) and Koningsdag (King’s Day), and a festival like Psy-Fi brings more than 10,000 visitors. The Air Force show days attract 280,000 enthousiasts to gaze in wonder at fighter jets and flying demonstrations. But the mother of all events is of course the contest of contests: the Elfstedentocht (Eleven Cities Race). This heroic, 200 kilometer long skating

race on natural, outdoor ice attracts one and a half to two million people. The race goes through the Frisian cities of Leeuwarden, Sneek, IJlst, Sloten, Stavoren, Hindeloopen, Workum, Bolsward, Harlingen, Franeker and Dokkum. As both the start and finishing point of the next Elfstedentocht, Leeuwarden will once more be the centre of attention. Let’s cross our fingers that we don’t have to wait too long.

Elke week organiseert A Guide to Leeuwarden de Leeuwarden Free Tour. Deze stadswandelingen zijn de leukste introductie tot de stad. De lokale gidsen kennen de verborgen plekken van de stad en vertellen graag over haar historie, maar weten ook de leukste winkels en mooiste graffiti te vinden.

Het beklimmen van dĂŠ scheve toren van Leeuwarden, de Oldehove, is echt een beleving. In de toren word je getrakteerd op het tragikomische verhaal van de bouwers, eenmaal boven geniet je van een prachtig uitzicht. De Oldehove is echt een goede workout. Je beklimt 183 oeroude traptreden om boven te komen. Wil je nog een stapje verder gaan? Beklim dan de Achmeatoren, deze toren is maar liefst 114 meter hoog! Vanuit de Panoramazaal kun je soms zelfs de Waddeneilanden zien liggen.

Climbing the crooked Leeuwarden tower, the Oldehove, is a true experience. You are treated to the tragicomic story of its builders while in the tower and once at the top you can enjoy the stunning view. The Oldehove is a really good workout. You climb 183 ancient stairs to reach the top. Want to take it even one step further? Climb the Achmea tower, a tower around 114 meters! You can sometimes even see the Wadden islands trom the panorama room.

Meer weten over de Friese cultuur? Aan de hand van uiteenlopende tentoonstellingen komen de cultuur en geschiedenis van Fryslân tot leven in het Fries Museum. Hier vind je het zwaard van vrijheidsstrijder Grutte Pier, het danskostuum van de mogelijke dubbelspionne Mata Hari en de mooiste kunstwerken uit Fryslân.

Een Elfstedentocht over het ijs is een steeds grotere zeldzaamheid: de schaatstocht van bijna 200 kilometer over 1 natuurijs is voor het laatst in 1997 gereden. Praktisch als de Friezen zijn maken ze dan gewoon een nieuwe Elfstedentocht. Niet verbonden door ijs, maar door het sprankelende water van fonteinen.

Het centrum van Leeuwarden moet je vanaf de gracht gezien hebben. De mooie gevels komen op deze manier het best tot hun recht. Vaar mee in een praam, dan word je meteen geïnformeerd over de vele monumenten aan de route. Een (elektrische) sloep huren is ook een optie!

Er is volop bedrijvigheid in de gevangenis. Naast de bibliotheek, zijn er twee restaurants en worden er veel evenementen georganiseerd. In de zomer is er bijvoorbeeld een foodtruck-festival, later is er een fair.

Want to learn more about Frisian culture? Frisian culture and history come alive through diverse exhibitions in the Frisian Museum. Here you can find the sword of freedom fighter ‘Grutte Pier; the costumes of spy and sensual dancer Mata Hari and the finest art from Friesland.

An Elfstedentocht over the ice is increasingly a rarity; the skating race of almost 200 kilometers over natural ice was last held in 1997. Practical as the Frisians are, they simply created a new Elfstedentocht. Not connected by ice, but by the sparkling waters of fountains.

You must not miss out on seeing Leeuwarden’s centre from its canals. The beautiful facades look their best this way. Take a trip on a ‘praam’ and you will be told about the route’s many monuments as you travel. It is also possible to rent a little electric boat!

There is plenty of activity in the old prison. In addition to the library, there are two restaurants and many events are organized. In the summer there is, for example, a food truck festival, and later on there is a fair.

Grutterswinkel

In 2019 opent het Natuurmuseum Fryslân de OnderWaterSafari. De OnderWaterSafari is een educatieve attractie waarbij je onder de waterspiegel duikt en toch droge voeten houdt. Je maakt hier een reis van het zoete water van sloot en plas naar het zoute water van Werelderfgoed de Waddenzee.

In de goede oude tijd waren supermarkten kleine knusse grutterswinkeltjes waar de kassa echt rinkelde en kruidenierswaren in papieren puntzakken over de toonbank gingen. In hartje Leeuwarden bestaat nog zo’n authentiek kruideniers-winkeltje. De grutterswinkel is een museum maar ook nog steeds een beetje winkel.

Historisch Centrum Leeuwarden Het Historisch Centrum Leeuwarden (HCL) is het informatie- en activiteitencentrum over de geschiedenis van Leeuwarden en omgeving. Het HCL heeft exposities en presentaties over de geschiedenis van Leeuwarden, een studiezaal met naslagwerken en organiseert o.a. stadswandelingen, fietstochten en rondleidingen.

In 2019 the Natuurmuseum Fryslân opened its OnderWaterSafari. The OnderWaterSafari is an educational attraction where you dive under the water level but still keep your feet dry. You’ll go on a trip from the fresh water of ditches and puddles to the salt water of World Heritage site, the Wadden Sea.

In the good old days, supermarkets were still small cozy grocery shops where the cash register still rang and groceries were still sold in paper bags. In the heart of Leeuwarden you can still find such an authentic grocery store. This grocer’s shop is now a museum but also still a bit of a store.

The Historisch Centrum Leeuwarden (HCL) is the information and activity center for the history of Leeuwarden and surroundings. The HCL has exhibitions about the history of Leeuwarden, a study hall with reference books and organized city tours, bike rides and other tours.

Obe is the stage for literature, art and language at the Oldehoofsterkerkhof in Leeuwarden. It offers a wide range of activities in the field of Frisian culture, including exhibitions, lectures and performances. Entrance is free.

De Grote Keizer biedt vermaak voor jong en oud, voor groepen, families of stelletjes. Ga bowlen, vermaak je kinderen in het speelparadijs of laat ze buiten genieten van de mega springkussens en het opblaasbare speelpark. Neem een arrangement, of boek wat je leuk vindt.

Keramiekmuseum Princessehof Beautiful city palace

De mooiste keramiek vind je verzameld in het Princessehof. Het museum is na een grondige verbouwing in 2017 heropend. Keizerlijk porselein uit China, een rijke verzameling art-nouveau en het iconische Delfts Blauw laten in de nieuwe presentatie Van oost en west zien dat keramiek van alle tijden is en van iedereen. The ‘Nieuwestad’ is the centre’s main street which is divided in two by one of Leeuwarden’s many canals. The main street branches off into many smaller shopping streets where you can find the most amazing boutiques. Every Thursday evening you can shop late and every Friday there is a market on the Wilhelminaplein. Also, Leeuwarden’s shops are open to customers every Sunday.

Tip: Every last Sunday of the month there are all kinds of activities in the city centre.
