Masquerade At The YAM Don’t miss the party of the year: Masquerade at the YAM, October 26. Enjoy aerial acrobatics, live deejaying by Prince Party Productions, and a full cash bar. Plus, jump in the photobooth, revel in unique performances by Tesseract Dance Collective, and live demonstrations of the mystic arts. Think tarot cards, palm readings, and divination.

Masquerade at the YAM is the city’s best and most creative costume contest with fun prizes in five different categories: Best Individual Costume, Best Art Inspired Costume, Most Creative/Artistic, Most Scary/Creepy, and Most Funny/ Ridiculous. Tickets for museum members are $35, and not-yetmembers are $50. Doors open at 7 p.m., and the party wraps up at 11 p.m.

This year, the YAM is introducing an exclusive VIP experience. Before the party begins, treat yourself to a special cocktail hour, featuring a one-of-a-kind AlternaCirque performances, private no-host bar, and heavy hors d’oeuvres from Raven’s Café d’Art. This special cocktail hour begins at 6 p.m. VIP tickets for museum members are $85 and not-yetmembers are $100. Cocktail hour pricing includes entry to the main event.

Luzene Hill comes to MSU Billings in honor of Indigenous People’s Day The Northcutt Steele Gallery at Montana State University Billings is pleased to welcome Luzene Hill to the MSU Billings community for an artist talk and performance followed by a public discussion on Monday, October 14, in honor of Indigenous Peoples’ Day. Hill’s presentation, titled “The Sound of Silence” begins at 6.30 p.m. in Room LI148, the lecture hall next to the gallery on the 1st floor of the Liberal Arts Building on MSUB campus.

A catered reception will follow. Parking on campus is free after 5 p.m..

Hill’s visit is part of MSU Billings Library’s and The Writer’s Voice programming for the NEA Big Read in honor of U.S. Poet Laureate Joy Harjo. A full schedule of the events is available at: www.msubillings.edu/library/big_read.htm.

Cherokee Indians. Hill lives and works in Atlanta, Georgia and received her MFA from Western Carolina University. Her work has been exhibited throughout the United States, as well as in Canada, Russia, Japan, and the United Kingdom.

A multi-media artist, best known for socially engaged conceptual installations and performances, Hill’s work reflects interdisciplinary scholarship in visual art, women’s studies, Native American culture – topics that are integral to her background and personal journey. Much of her work has addressed violence against women.

Informed by pre-contact culture of the Americas Hill advocates for indigenous sovereignty – linguistic, cultural and personal sovereignty. These concepts form the basis for her installations, performances, drawings and artist’s books.

Hill’s awards include the 2019 Ucross Fellowship, the 2016 Native Arts and Cultures Foundation Fellowship in Visual Arts, the 2015 Eiteljorg Museum Fellowship and 2015 First Peoples Fund Fellowship. Hill’s work is featured in Susan Powers’ book, “Cherokee Art: Prehistory to Present” and in Josh McPhee’s book, “Celebrate People’s History!: The Poster Book of Resistance and Revolution”, and the PBS Documentary, “Native Art NOW!”.

The Northcutt Steele Gallery is located on the first floor of the Liberal Arts on the Montana State University Billings campus. The gallery is open Monday – Friday from 8:00am – 4:00 pm, and by appointment. The gallery is supported in part by funds from ASMSUB and Montana Arts Council. Nile Ranch Rodeo Finals October 12th

No matter if you've never been to a ranch rodeo or you're a die-hard fan, the NILE Ranch Rodeo is wild, Western, and whole lot of fun. The contestants are working cowboys that are out on the ranch every day. They compete for the bragging rights and the chance of added jingle in their pockets.

The events that the teams of four (five if the team has a designated bronc rider) compete in these great events: Ranch Bronc Riding, Wild Cow Milking, Team Branding, Team Doctoring and Team Trailering. The events are supposed to imitate tasks that are done on the ranch. Broncs have to be tamed, mama cows must be out-maneuvered, calves need branding, sick steers need doctored and yearlings have to loaded up. Although the prairies and pastures don't have big screens with instant replay, it's a close representation to what cowhands do on the range.

The Ranch Rodeo at the NILE is a Finals, meaning ranch rodeos from around the region sanction with the NILE and send their winning teams to compete. It's the best of the best

vying for the awards and cash. Catch all the ranch rodeo action every summer by attending the sanctioned ranch rodeos and keeping up with who will make to the NILE. Join us after the rodeo for the Dance in the Dirt. At the conclusion of the awards make your way down to the arena floor for a country concert.

Awards:

1st place through 4th place: paid 40%, 30%, 20%, 10% of pot 1st and 2nd place: Qualify for the WSSRA Finals in Winnemmucca, NV (must be WSRRA card carrying teams) Top Horse: The most athletic, cowy, best-partner-a-cowboycould-have, horse is given a prize Top Hand: The handiest, best helper, the-person-you-wanthelping-you-at-the-ranch wins a saddle Hard Luck Team: Last place team wins Wild Rags by Lois as a consolation for have tough luck Best Bronc Rider: Wins Belt Buckle

Tough Enough To Wear Pink October 18th All fans and contestants are encouraged to wear pink during the ProRodeo for "Tough Enough To Wear Pink Night" presented by St. Vincent's Health Care. Working together to live in a world without breast cancer.

The NILE will pledge $1 for every rodeo ticket purchased while other businesses will be donating money towards the “Eva Project.”

In addition to rodeo fans wearing pink, all contestants wearing pink that win each of their respective events will win an additional $100 "Pink Bonus" sponsored by the Yellowstone

Surgery Center. Again this year, Wells Fargo Bank is the sponsor a special set of kids chaps and vest handcrafted by B.J. Griffin of Powell, WY. The vest and chaps will be auctioned off prior to the rodeo Friday night in the NILE member hospitality room.

All proceeds will be used to assist in St. Vincent's Eva Project, a special project designed to provide free mammograms to limited income women over 40 who would not otherwise be able to afford mammograms.

Rodeo action starts at 7 p.m.

October 17th Top Montana High School rodeo athletes will perform right alongside the professionals. These young kids are the up-andcoming rodeo stars of tomorrow... or maybe today!

Two young athletes per event (and two teams in team roping) are invited to match their skills against rodeo’s best. The student athletes are chosen from the Montana High School Rodeo Association, and consist of the two leaders in each event

after the Fall season.

Though several high school events are not in the PRCA, the standard seven events are featured in the NILE showcase: bareback riding, steer wrestling, saddle bronc riding, team roping, tie-down roping, barrel racing and bull riding.

Join us to cheer these High School rodeo athletes on as they test their skills against the leader board and see where they stack up!

October 19th It’s a night to honor and remember our service men, women and their families who have all sacrificed for us. Help us thank them on this special night.

This is also the grand finale for NILE, the very last event

of the whole stock show and rodeo week. Be prepared for explosive action and saving the best for last. We also feature the selection of Supreme Row Champion Female and Male cattle.

Welcome Junior Fed Exhibitors!

The NILE is dedicated to the promotion of livestock promotion, agricultural education, and respect for our western tradition.

Each year NILE strives to promote today’s youth through many events and activities – one of the largest is that of the Junior Fed Market Shows. In 2018, over 350 steers, lambs, hogs, and goats entered their respective show vying for the top spots!

Open only to 4-H and FFA members ages 8-18 as of January 1st, 2019, we offer the Junior Fed Market show along with Showmanship classes. Showmanship is broken into 3 divisions – Beginner (ages 8-10 yrs old), Junior (ages 11-13 yrs old), Senior (ages 14-18). Prizes are given to the winners of each division in each species.

Each exhibitor has the opportunity sell one animal at the Junior Fed Sale of Champions. This year the sale will be on Monday – October 14th, 2019 at 6 p.m. Thank you to all of our 2018 Junior Fed Buyers, we appreciate all that you do to help promote today’s youth!

Nile Horse Events

This is horse country. Montana provides some of the best horses in the region. The NILE strives to preserve and embrace the western lifestyle and horses are an integral part of that mission. By providing a venue for working horses horse enthusiasts have a way to showcase their equine partners. Join us in October for the many horse events during the week of NILE. Check out the ranch rodeo where the handiest cowboys and cowgirls compete in events derived from the working on the ranch. A special award is given that night to the Top Horse.

Truly great athletes are those that are versatile.

Satisfy the need for speed in the Running the Rims Barrel Race. Three barrels, two hearts, one dream--horses explode across the arena showing off their quickness and power.

UBRC co-hosts this event providing a professional and fun atmosphere.

they valued are highlighted in the AQHA Ranching Heritage Challenge. Registered horses perform tasks that would be easily translatable to the pasture when moving, doctoring, sorting, and caring for cattle. Take a peak at what tradition looks like at this show.

With the start of the NILE Horse Sales the NILE Horse Futurities developed. Horses become eligible to compete in the futurities by going through the sale ring. It's an added incentive to buy at the NILE because there's a chance to win some money the next year in the futurity. Yearling, Two-Year-Old, Three-Year-Old, Four-Year-Old, Five-Year-Old, and barrel horses can enter in their respective futurities. In addition, the three, four, five, and barrel horses can become eligible through a nominated stallion. This is a great event that promotes the intertwined relationship between all of the NILE horse events.

The NILE Gold Buckle Select Horse Sales draw buyers and sellers from all over the region. Some of Montana's best breeders bring their babies for the Weanling/Yearling sale.

Performance horses ranging from rodeo arena to pasture doctoring trot through the sale ring each year and buyers try to snag one before someone else does. It's a great two days with lots of incredible horses.

Rocky Mountain College to hold fall concert October 13 The Rocky Mountain College Music Department will present a fall concert on Sunday, October 13 at 3:00 p.m. at Mayflower Congregational Church. The concert is free and open to the public.

The concert will feature music from the United States and Canada. “Klee Wyck” pays homage to the great Canadian painter Emily Carr, evoking the wonder and mystery of the natural world. Patrick Quigley’s arrangement of “Steal Away” marries the traditional African-American spiritual melody with an improvisational ostinato pattern. Minneapolisbased composer Kyle Pederson’s selection “Hands Are Knockin’” uses the juxtaposition of English and Arabic texts to reinforce the universal importance of open hearts, open minds, and open hands.

ZooMontana is a 70-acre wildlife park located in Billings, Montana.

On the Trail of Big Cats with Steve Winter National Geographic Live, National Geographic’s touring speaker series, and Alberta Bair Theater proudly present “On the Trail of Big Cats” with Steve Winter, an award-winning National Geographic wildlife photographer, on Saturday, October 12 at 7:30 p.m. at Petro Theatre on the campus of MSU Billings.

Winter, who specializes in wildlife photography—particularly big cats and has been a National Geographic photographer since 1991—shares his stories live on stage about traveling the world to photograph big cats and educates audiences on the importance of habitat conservation. He takes audiences behind his lens and on his adventures to get the perfect shot.

Winter has been named BBC Wildlife Photographer of the Year and BBC Wildlife Photojournalist of the Year. He was a two-time winner of Picture of the Year International’s Global Vision Award and won first prize in the nature story

category from World Press Photo in 2008 and 2014. He has been interviewed on CBS Nightly News, NPR, BBC, CNN, and other media outlets.
