The BSO&C Celebrates the Life of Mozart The Billings Symphony Orchestra & Chorale welcome special guests, Amy Schendel, Sara Ponder, Clayton Parr, and Daren Small to the Lincoln Center stage. Together they pay homage to one of the classical music’s greatest composers, with Mozart’s Requiem and Symphony No. 35, in A Celebration of Mozart, Saturday, February 15 at the Lincoln Center. Showtime is 7:30 pm, with Concert Cues starting at 6:45 pm.

Mozart’s Requiem

The Requiem was secretly commissioned by Count Franz von Walsegg to commemorate the passing of his wife. Once Mozart received the first half of his commission—paid by messenger—he began writing, never knowing who he was writing for. Incredibly ill at the time, Mozart is said to have been convinced he was writing the Requiem for his own funeral. Indeed, he passed away on December 5, 1791 at the age of 35, leaving the work unfinished. Mozart’s wife recruited his student, Franz Xaver Süssmayr, to complete the Requiem in secrecy, and 100 days after Mozart’s death, it was delivered to Count Franz von Walsegg. Many believe von Walsegg tried to pass it off as his own work, as he was known to do. However, Mozart’s wife was very vocal about the commissioned project and was able to quash his claim.

Mozart’s Symphony No. 35

Also known as the Haffner Symphony, Symphony No. 35 was Mozart’s second work commissioned by the Haffner family of

Salzburg, Austria. After the success of his Haffner Serenade for the wedding of Marie Elizabeth Haffner, the family again sought Mozart to commemorate the ennoblement of Sigmund Haffner the Younger. This second Haffner serenade was later reworked by Mozart into a full symphony, making its debut performance as Symphony No. 35 on March 23, 1783, at Vienna’s Burg Theatre. On the day of the performances, tickets are only available online, or in person at the Lincoln Center auditorium located on N. 29th St. across from the Dude Rancher Lodge, beginning at 10:00 am. St. Patrick’s Day Celtic Fair & Street Party Saturday, March 14, 2020, the Downtown Billings Alliance (DBA) and Hooligan’s Sports Bar present the 39th annual St. Patrick’s Day celebration in Downtown Billings. The event includes the Celtic Fair, Street Party, and the parade is free and open to the public from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m.

The Celtic Fair includes live performances on the community stage, located outside the Babcock Theater on 2nd Ave N., The fair’s live entertainment kicks off at 12:30 pm with performances from the Claddagh Irish Dance Academy and 1:30 pm with local performer Trevor Wood. Entre Technology Services has partnered with the DBA to bring the Steep World portable climbing wall to the Celtic Fair for the public to enjoy. The climbing wall will be on-site within the Celtic Fair from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm and is just one of many family fun activities added to the fair this year. The community loved the Alpaca’s from the Mule Train Alpaca Ranch, so much last year they will be back again this year! Bishops Cuts/ Color at 108 North Broadway will be offering St. Patrick’s Dayinspired braiding and green hair fun, along with face painting inside their salon. Party Ponies will have their miniature horse dressed as a unicorn in the fair for families to capture whimsical photos of their young ones with. The food trucks, vendors, parade, beverages, and music all add up to a great day to come downtown, no matter who you are. At noon, after the parade has ended, the Hooligan’s Sports Bar Street Party will come alive with local Billings rock tribute band, Kicking Karma. This is Kicking Karma’s second year rocking out on the Hooligan’s stage for the St. Patrick’s Day festivities. The Hooligan’s team will pour green beer along with their Hooligan’s Irish Red at their Street Party on Broadway. Because they are celebrating both St. Patrick’s Day and their 15th year in operation, the Hooligan’s team will offer fun giveaways all day long. The Lil’ Leprechaun Bike Skills Area is the newest addition to the St. Patrick’s Day festivities activities and will take place from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm on N. Broadway between 3rd and 2nd Avenue North, and is sponsored and staged by downtown’s newest bike shop, The Ride Cyclery. Owner Sam Mather is excited to spread his passion for cycling through an event like this. Mather will have the help from a number of members of Pedal United, a local chapter of the International Mountain Bike Association that advocates for mountain bike trails in Billings and Red Lodge area. The Lil’ Leprechaun Skills Area will include fun outdoor bike skills lessons and obstacles set up for all levels of riders to enjoy. St. Vincent’s Kids in Motion truck will be on-site to share details about their Bicycle Repair Clinics they offer at a number of schools in the Billings Area. Kids and adults, aged six years and up who ride without training wheels, are invited to bring or ride their bikes downtown for the event. Youth participants will have the chance to decorate their bikes for the holiday. All riders must bring and wear a helmet. Returning to the Celtic Fair and Street Party for the second year will be the Billings’ Sportsball group and the “hammerlachen” game. This will take place on 2nd Ave North in front of Rock Creek Coffee Roasters from 1:00pm to 3:00pm. Sportsball is a twenty-one years of age or older, co-ed, recreational sports league and social group who facilitate and organize nonaggressive sports leagues year round. The group introduced the

fun hammer slinging game to the festival last year.

Samuel Hensler, Creator of Sportsball noted that: “The game is typically called ‘hammerschlagen’ which is a very German name, so for St.Patrick’s day purposes we named it something that sounded more Irish. We try to play obscure and fun sports in Sportball; think something you may have played in a backyard or a version of the typical league sport but with a twist.” Hensler and the Sportsball group invite the public to stop by to watch or participate for a small donation that goes to the Downtown Billings Association, the non-profit that operates downtown community events like the Celtic Fair, Strawberry Festival, HarvestFest, and the Holiday Parade.

Gary Farmer for Presidential Lecture Series and special events Rocky Mountain College will host actor Gary Farmer in its third installment of the Presidential Lecture Series. Farmer will present “A 20th Century Indian: Perspectives on Life and Art” on Tuesday, Feb. 18, at 5 p.m. in the Great Room of Prescott Hall on the Rocky Mountain College campus. The public is welcome to attend the event. Farmer, born in Ohsweken on the Six Nations Reservation along the Grand River of the Iroquois Confederacy in Ontario, Canada, studied photography and film at Syracuse University and Ryerson Polytechnic University. Over the last 25 years, Farmer has portrayed over 100 roles in independent and mainstream film and television. A pioneer in the development of First Nations media in Canada, Farmer is the founding director of Aboriginal Voices Radio, founding editor-in-chief of the Aboriginal Voices magazine, and previously led the Aboriginal Voices Festival. “Rocky Mountain College is honored to have Gary Farmer visit our campus to continue our Presidential Lecture Series,” said Rocky Mountain College President, Robert Wilmouth, M.D. Farmer is best known for his role as spiritual Native American guide Nobody in “Dead Man” (1995). Other key roles have included Arnold Joseph in “Smoke Signals” (1998) and Philbert in “Powwow Highway” (1989), which became a milestone in Native film. As a filmmaker, Farmer has directed projects including an episode of the “Forever Knight” television series (1992) and an episode of “Father Figure” (1992). Farmer also formed the blues band Gary Farmer and the Troublemakers who have released two albums, “Love Songs and Other Issues” (2007) and “Lovesick Blues” (2009). Farmer recently completed the film shoot “Cowboys” in Montana and he is currently working on the NBC Universal series “Resident Alien” which will debut on the SYFY Network this summer. Farmer was selected in 2001 for the Taos Mountain Award recognizing lifetime achievements of an outstanding Native film professional by the Taos Talking Picture Festival. He also received the 1997 Best Actor award from the American Indian Film Festival in San Francisco; the 1997 Best Actor award from First Americans in the Arts in Los Angeles; and the Best Actor award at the 1989 American Indian Film Festival. “Rocky Mountain College’s Native American Outreach is so proud to bring Gary Farmer to Billings. We think it is vital for our Native students to fellowship with Native leaders in every field. Mr. Farmer is an iconic Indigenous actor, musician, and advocate for Indian Country. To be able to share his talent and wisdom with our students and the Billings community is a pleasure,” said Rocky Mountain College Native American Outreach Director, Misty Kuhl. During Farmer’s visit to Billings, Rocky Mountain College Native American Outreach will host a screening of his film “Dead Man” at the Babcock Theatre on Monday, Feb. 17, at 7 p.m. Attendees will enjoy a special Q&A session with Farmer after the film. Tickets are $8 per person. Gary Farmer and the Troublemakers will also play blues and rock at Craft Local on Wednesday, Feb. 19, at 6 p.m. This event is free and open to the public.

International Guitar Night

Coming off sold out shows celebrating its 20th Anniversary, Alberta Bair Theater is proud to welcome back International Guitar Night on February 15, 7:30 p.m., at Petro Theatre on the campus of MSU Billings. Bull Pen Preview at the 2020 MATE Check out these breeders who are bringing bulls to this year’s MATE Show. The Bull Pen Preview presented by the Northern Ag Network and KGHL offers tremendous exposure to breeders wishing to promote their genetics and program to commercial and registered cattlemen and women. Live bulls from local breeders are displayed for potential buyers to evaluate the composition of the bulls. Passerby’s can visit with breeders and see for themselves the traits of their programs, purchase a bull right then and there, or get information about upcoming sales. In 2020, the MATE Bull Pen Preview features fourteen breeders from across the region promoting five different breeds, Red Angus, Hereford, Black Angus, Galloway and Charolais. If in the market for a new herd sire this year, make sure to stop by and check out the newest genetics being offered –this could be the place to find “the one.” While your looking through the pens of bulls, don’t forget to VOTE for what you believe is the best pen of bulls! The exhibit will open with a reception Thursday, February 13, 2020, from 4 to 6 p.m. at the RynikerMorrison Gallery. The exhibit is free and open to the public. The exhibit features five resident artists from the Red Lodge Clay Center: Derek Au, Soojin Choi, Jon Green, Jared Peterson, and Stephanie Wilhelm as well as artisan jewelry by local artist Joseph Fowler. In 2007 a friend convinced Derek Au to “do something that terrifies you.” He moved to the “Porcelain Capital of the World,” Jingdezhen, where he found work there as a studio manager at the Pottery Workshop under the direction of Takeshi Yasuda. Derek later established his own ceramics studio and created two series of well-received porcelain works, “Planeware” and “Painted.” “I’m interested in the relationship between historical and contemporary craft traditions, as well as the ongoing dialogue between different crafts such as ceramics, metalware, glass and painting,” said Derek. Soojin Choi was born and raised in South Korea, but has worked as an artist in the United States since 2010. Soojin earned her BFA at Virginia Commonwealth University in 2015 with a double major in craft / material studies and painting / printmaking. She continued her studies at Alfred University, pursuing an MFA degree in ceramics in 2018. “My work transforms objects, figures and spaces into visual language by repeatedly layering flat and spatial surfaces,” said Soojin. Jon Green received his BFA at the University of Montana in 2019. He was born to a single mother in a large MexicanAmerican family. Raised amid construction and home making, Jon appreciated the work ethic surrounding these occupations. He attended nursing school at Montana State University from 2011 to 2014, but had a change of heart and began working in ceramics as an intern at the Clay Studio of Missoula. “My work is driven by a curiosity of how and why things function in a way that we know as familiar,” said Jon. “The inspiration for this research can be as subtle as a backwards door knob or the motion of pulling a push-broom.”

Jared Peterson is a graduate of West Virginia University, where he studied English and ceramics. Jared is proud of his South Western and Appalachian roots and explores them in poetry and ceramic art. Traveling throughout the world to pursue his love for art and English, Jared has been a multiple time short-term resident at Red Lodge Clay Center. He has studied ceramics in Jingdezhen, China, and recently fulfilled a Fulbright English Teaching Assistant grant in Perak, Malaysia. “I am fascinated by language and narrative,” said Jared. “My work employs an array of characters and motifs that explore aspects of my identity. With the dog as the leading role, a stand-in for myself, I navigate through cacti and cow skulls, mailboxes and fence posts, exploring my Mexican heritage, identity as a West Virginian, and life in rural and suburban America.” Stephanie Wilhelm is a ceramic artist from Maryland. She holds a BFA from Elizabethtown College in Pennsylvania and an MFA from the University of Florida. Throughout her career, she has been a production potter, spent years in the wood-firing community, and worked at multiple community clay centers and institutions maintaining the studios and assisting visiting artists. She is a dedicated educator with years of teaching experience in outreach and community studios, as well as college-level classes. “I find inspiration in the history of decorative ceramics moving beyond conventional function and form, creating union between shape, ornamentation, and story,” said Stephanie. Joseph Fowler will also show artisan jewelry at the RLCC exhibit. Joseph has been a successful jewelry artisan for 12 years and prides himself on offering a one-of-a-kind treasures. He has been voted best beaded jewelry designer in Montana. “My Mom inspired a love and passion for jewelry and encouraged me to find a hands on activity as part of my education as a young boy,” said Joseph. The Ryniker-Morrison Gallery, located in Tech Hall on the RMC campus, is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, except during College holidays.
