This month we’ll dive into the world of insects and spiders with entomologist Marian Kirst. She’ll lead us on a field expedition in search of wild, wacky invertebrates, and she’ll share stories and fascinating tidbits to help us ID them along the way. $10/person or $5/students (members free) August 3

Admission $20 at the door Masontown, a young band with a concept as timeless as the Rocky Mountains, has alighted onto a bluegrass community that has already produced some of the best that the acoustic music world has to offer.

They are a fiddle champion and classical violinist. A veteran bluegrass mandolin player and composer. One of Colorado’s jazz guitar greats reborn as a flatpicking sensation. An upright bassist with roots running deep in the classical and jazz traditions. These are the individual elements that come together to create Masontown. This House of Books 224 N. Broadway We continue with Poetry Open Mic Evenings, poetry events that have been a tradition since This House of Books came into existence. We meet on the first Tuesday of the month under the leadership of Nichole Almeda Morton.

The series allows poets to present their work outside of a competition or a “slam.” These popular events have featured famous, local, and beginning poets reading and speaking about

poetry.

Drop in to give a listen or to read from your work. Who knows, you may find yourself in the company of the next Montana poet laureate! It’s a friendly group, and new participants are always welcome.

St Johns Summer Concert Series

St. John’s Summer Concert Series is a FREE concert series put on by St. John’s Lutheran Ministries for the benefit of the community of Billings, Montana. Established in 1998, the series annually attracts 7,500 music lovers to the Fred & Marie Miller Pavilion on the campus of St. John’s Lutheran Ministries during five consecutive Thursday evenings. The series begins on Thursday, June 25th.

Opening performers start at 6 with the featured performer beginning at 7. St. John’s is located at the corner of Shiloh Rd and Rimrock Rd...3940 Rimrock Road.

Parking is located on the St. John’s campus, and it is also free. Shuttle service runs throughout the night to transport concert-goers to/from the parking area. People can even walk it in just a few blocks.

Handicapped parking is available - enter campus through the main entrance off Rimrock Road, and

you will be directed to handicapped parking areas.

In addition to our fabulous St. John’s catering, we will feature a “food court” area offering a variety of foods from local vendors.

Join entomologists Ralph Scott and Marian Kirst for a microbrew-fueled journey into the world of insects at night. We’ll start with a brief lecture on the amazing adaptations that invertebrates use to navigate the nighttime world. Then we’ll use a variety of techniques - including spotlighting, black lighting and sugaring - to attract and hunt for interesting insects and spiders, all while enjoying some local brews from Gally’s Brewing Co. in Harlowton!

It’s a unique event for friend groups or couples looking for an exciting date night idea.

A program fee of $30 ($27 members) includes 2 pints of beer from Gally’s Brewing Co. August 10

Something Old, Lots of New, Rock and Roll and Something Blue Artwalk Downtown Billings is scheduled for Friday, August 2, 2019. It is the third of six events in ArtWalk’s 25th Anniversary Season, The August ArtWalk line-up includes 30 Season Members (open for all six events) and two One-Time Participants. OneTime Participants include Kucera Scale Station and the High Plains Women’s Museum.

“Something Old” highlights include 1880s ledger art by Crow and Gros Ventre artists at the Western Heritage Center, At nearby Kirks Grocery, owner/artist Shane de Leon shares 30 years of his graphic design work, silk screens, and rock and roll ephemera. Kucera Scale Station,returns to the ArtWalk with its popular Classic Car and Art Show and a benefit auction for Betina Johnson.

“Lots of New” art is included in the Terakedis Gallery show, “The West is in Her Eyes.” It showcases the work of area women artists and marks the ratification of the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution in August 1920. Young artist and rising star, Bunny K, presents her vibrant, colorful “pours” at the Downtown Billings Alliance. Mosaic artist Linda Lemire presents her very first art exhibit at Global Village.

From Connie Dillon’s second floor gallery in the historic Carlin Hotel, you can hear tunes from the Magic City Blues Fest (MCBF) while enjoying Connie’s paintings of rocks and rolling rivers. Rock and roll icon Elvis Presley makes an appearance in an exhibit by Kelley Partridge at Dickey’s BBQ (where the art smells delicious).

“Something Blue” offerings include the Toucan Gallery’s popular “Blues” invitational art show. It plays off the nearby Magic City Blues Festival (MCBF) and is filled with art inspired by music, musicians, the blues and the color blue.

Children’s arts and crafts activities are available at Wise Wonders Children’s Museum and Well-Pared Juice Bar and Eatery. Both are on the Skypoint Loop.

With the exception of the McCormick Cafe, all Art Walk locations on Montana Avenue are accessible from cross streets on First and Second Avenues North. Montana Avenue is closed between North 24th Street and North 25th Street for the MCBF. Plan your itinerary ahead of time to enjoy the Historic Loop.

All ArtWalk events are are free. Hours are between 5 – 9 p.m. Kirks Grocery offers “after ArtWalk” music until 10 p.m.

The popular ArtWalk raffle features a gift basket with items donated by Historic Loop locations and others. The raffle basket can be seen at the Western Heritage Center. Each Historic Loop site will have free tickets and a raffle box. The raffle winner will be contacted by phone and his/her name posted on Facebook @billingsartwalk. Stay tuned!

For 25 years, ArtWalk has promoted artists, skilled artisans, studios and fine art galleries in downtown Billings. ArtWalk started with a handful of Montana Avenue galleries in 1994. It has grown into a a “not-to-miss” event that engages artists of all ages, patrons, visitors, friends, and families six times each year.

ArtWalks are organized, sustained and paid for by Season Members, One-Time Participants and Sponsors. Several Season Members have been with the ArtWalk since it began 25 years ago. Others have joined recently as they recognize the value ArtWalk brings to their operations, the downtown arts community and the community as a whole.

Subsequent ArtWalks in the 25th Anniversary Season are scheduled for the first Fridays of October and December 2019 and February 2020.

The relationship between Yellowstone Park visitors and resident wildlife is a complicated one. At one time, visitors could pet and feed park animals including marmots, elk, and of course, the bear. Please Don’t Feed the Bears: Close Encounters with Yellowstone Wildlife tracks the park’s transition from a visitor playground where these interactions were encouraged to today’s wildlife preserve where visitor behavior is closely monitored. Big Horn County was established on January 13, 1913. The county is 5,025 sq. miles, equaling 3,250,000 acres, which includes the Crow and Northern Cheyenne Indian Reservations.

The courthouse was built in 1937 with the help of the WPA (Work Progress Administration).

Hardin, 15 miles west of Little Bighorn (Custer) Battlefield, is situated on the banks of the Bighorn River. The town is surrounded by productive ranches and farms, and the area is rich in history.

Founded in 1907, Hardin is the youngest and largest town in Big Horn County and serves as the county seat. Hardin was named after Samuel H. Hardin, a cattleman who came to this territory from Texas.

The Bozeman Trail, used by immigrants from 1863-1866 in search of gold, crosses through the southwest corner of Big Horn County. Markers are placed along the trail and can be seen from various state and county roads.

Fort C. F. Smith, Montana’s second military post, was established by the U.S. Army in August 1866 along the Bozeman Trail to protect immigrants. No evidence of the site remains.

Little Bighorn Battlefield

On June 25, 1876 the Battle of the Little Bighorn, one of the last efforts of the Northern Plains Indians to preserve their ancestral way of life, took place approximately 15 miles south of what is now Hardin, Montana.

Fort Custer

Fort Custer was established in 1877 after the Battle of the Little Bighorn on the high bluff near the junction of the Little Bighorn and Bighorn Rivers.

The million dollar fort was funded by Congress to hold the Indians in check and protect the white men who were rapidly occupying the land. Fort Custer, where 500 to 700 men were stationed, became known as the finest cavalry post in the world.

Nothing remains of the fort today. In 1930 a monument was placed on site by the Daughters of the American Revolution. The monument was moved to the Big Horn County Museum in 2016.

One of the main attractions in the museum gallery is the Fort Custer exhibit. The exhibit includes: the Fort Custer Stage Coach, uniforms, weapons, artifacts, photographs and a scale model of the fort.

Hardin’s Historic District starts near Railroad Street and Center Avenue through the 200 and 400 blocks, plus buildings facing Third Street from Cheyenne Avenue to Crow Avenue. The District earned a listing on the National Historic Register in 1984.

Crow Fair Celebration Powwow & Rodeo

The 101st Annual Crow Fair Celebration Powwow & Rodeo will be at Crow Agency on August 14-19, 2019 at Crow Agency, Montana, includes parades, a four-day powwow, a rodeo and horse races. The Crow Fair Celebration is the largest Native American event in Montana, and one of the biggest powwows in the country. Held each year in Crow Agency, Montana by The Apsáalooke people of the Crow Indian Reservation just South of Hardin, Montana. Also known as the “Tipi Capital of the world”, Crow Fair begins on the third Thursday in August and attracts more than 50,000 spectators and participants from the around the world.

The Crow Fair Rodeo is sponsored annually by the Crow Nation. The rodeo is a daily feature at the Crow Fair, offering a full day’s entertainment of youth events, professional Indian cowboys and cowgirls, and horse racing. Rodeos occur throughout the United States, through the various rodeo associations like the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association.

The Northern Plains Indian Rodeo Association, organized under the Indian National Finals Rodeo, is the current association that sanctions the rodeo event.

The Rodeo is held at the Edison Real Bird Memorial Complex, in Crow Agency, Montana. The rodeo arena, race track, stables, and campgrounds are all part of this complex.

Parade at Crow Fair, Crow Agency by Montana Office of Tourism and Business Development

Besides the pow-wow, there are many other attractions. Each year the fair holds a parade, which winds its way through the campsites. A large number of women on horseback using oldstyle saddles (many family heirlooms) of bone and rawhide, ride in the parade. The parade begins each morning of the Fair at ten o’clock. The Color Guard leads the parade with retired veterans and active members of the armed services. Following the Color Guard are the President, Vice-President, and First Vice-President of the Crow Fair. The President carries the American Flag. In the past, the royalty of the Crow Nation would follow the Presidents; however, in modern parades the Crow Tribal Officials replace Crow royalty.

The parade includes contests for best traditional dress in more than half a dozen categories. Riders on horseback were followed by elaborately decorated cars, trucks and trailers.

Some of the vehicles are decorated in memorial to tribal elders who have passed during the prior year. Others carry multiple generations from elders to newborns. Princesses, ranging in age from preschool to 18, ride along the route, on horseback or by vehicle, wearing traditional, elaborate dress with perfect, modest poise.

Crow Fair Pow Wow

The Crow Fair Pow Wow is much like pow wows throughout the west, except for more emphasis on traditional dance styles.

You can pick out [the Crow tribe’s style] from hundreds of dancers because the dress ways are the same as the turn of the last century. The only additions are material things to decorate their regalia.

The pow wow grand entry begins at 1 p.m. sharp. It is led by the veteran honor guard, followed by all the dancers who will participate in the contests that have been held throughout the week. The announcer introduces competing drum groups that surround the arbor, each taking a turn keeping the beat.

In addition to the Crow people, members of other tribes come to dance and sing and sell their goods on the midway that surrounds the arbor. Dance contests, with substantial prize money, are held throughout the week with participants ranging in age from preschool to elders.
