Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is something many of you may not be familiar with, unless, of course, you are a returning Winter Texan or your grandchildren asked you to watch Coco with them. If you haven’t seen Coco, it’s a really cute movie I suggest adding to your watchlist! Growing up in South Texas, I’ve been exposed to this tradition as long as I can remember, and my earliest recollection is making ofrendas (altars) in elementary school as a way to honor those we’d lost.

Several years ago, I had the opportunity to visit Mexico City and just so happened to be there as the Dia de los Muertos celebrations took place. What an incredible sight to see! The streets were lined with marigolds, giant decorated skulls, paper flowers, and larger-than-life catrinas. It was a celebration of those we’ve lost and something everyone should have the opportunity to witness!

We all have people we’ve lost. I hope you will learn more about Dia de los Muertos and how you might participate in some of our beautiful cultural celebrations.

WINTER TEXAN

Your Connection to the Rio Grande Valley

The Journey of Alebrijes

In 1936, artist Pedro Linares experienced a fever dream that spawned the creation of a fantastical addition to Mexican folk art.

The story goes: Linares dreamt of mystical creatures emerging from a forest chanting, “Alebrije! Alebrije! Alebrije!” The word comes solely from Linares’ imagination, just like the whimsical creations inspired by the dream.

Linares began recreating the creatures, each with a unique mix of animal features, out of paper mâché and with

vivid colors, calling them alebrijes (pronounced: ah-lehbree-hez).

International Museum of Arts and Sciences curator Marcelo Ramirez says renowned artists Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera lauded Linares’ work, collecting and commissioning original pieces.

Ramirez says Linares’ work inspired other artists and reproductions of his style.

Ramirez references Mexican folk art as “imagery of popular culture through a more indigenous and localized lens, utiliz-

ing materials available at the time.”

A Harlingen artist is utilizing what he has available to craft alebrije sculptures: scrap metal, a departure from the traditional use of paper mâché or wood.

Enrique Del Angel, 54, turned to car and motorcycle parts to create his unique pieces, currently on display at the Harlingen Arts & Heritage Museum exhibit titled Alebrijes y Mas: A Journey in Metal. Del Angel’s journey with metal art began a year and

a half ago, seemingly as much a surprise to him as anyone. He readily shares that nothing from his background screams “artist.”

But once his wife, Mary, shared images on social media of the metal heart he designed for her, he received resounding positive feedback, sending him well on his way.

Ramirez and Del Angel both reference the Disney animated movie, Coco, for cultivating a new concept on alebrijes. The movie refers to the creatures as spirit guides,

linking them to the traditions of Dia de los Muertos. “Historically,” Ramirez says, “this is not accurate.”

However, Dia de los Muertos, a celebration of the lives of those that pass before us, and the alebrijes art form both pay homage to Mexico’s cultural symbolism.

Inspired by Linares and artist Manuel Jimenez, Del Angel carries on this tradition, researching and putting thought into each element of his metal alebrijes. For example, the wings on his larger Quetzalcoatl piece represent the mascots of Harlingen’s two high schools, the Hawks and Cardinals, and the eyes represent reports of an alligator spotted in town.

“Most of the pieces do have a story behind them,” says Del Angel. “The metal may not have much value; the value is in the sentiment.” •

Patti Kroening of Victoria Palms RV Resort in Donna is only two destinations away from completing a years-long goal of visiting as many national parks as possible.

Originally from southern Wisconsin, Kroening’s parents instilled a love of travel through camping. Taking it up a notch, as a retiree, Kroening would plan an international trip every three years or so before setting her sights on the national parks.

It was a casual endeavor at first, visiting the Petrified Forrest, Painted Desert, and Grand Canyon National Parks in her RV.

“The Grand Canyon really hooked me,” she says, ultimately inspiring the goal to experience more.

In 2019, she began purposefully planning. “Once you put a plan together--from a goal-that’s when you really get started,” Kroening says. She plans three to four months out, booking extra days to allow for flexibility. The initial ritual at each stop: check in at the visitors center, buy a magnet for her daughter, and get a stamp in her park passport.

Kroening, 69, has visited all of the national parks in the lower 48 states, plus Hawaii and

American Samoa. The Grand Canyon tops her list of favorites, having visited it three times, including once at sunrise when the view evoked a “spiritual moment.”

“We have such unique parks,” she says, referencing the topography of the Great Sand Dunes in Colorado, the baby-powder-like feel of White Sands, New Mexico, and the history of Fort Jefferson - Dry Tortugas National Park in Florida. One of her most memorable experiences: a helicopter excursion at Haleakala volcano in Hawaii.

Up next: Kroening plans to visit four of Alaska’s eight national parks (the remaining four are not easily accessible) in August. Then, she will begin planning for the last one on her list, the Virgin Islands National Park.

Once she has completed her list, Kroening will have visited 59 total parks. Has all the planning, travel, time, and effort been worth it? Her emphatic answer, “Yes!” •

Things I Have Learned A somewhat random and reckless look at life from a fairly old guy

It’s Going to be OK, Really

Today’s Wisdom: Everything will be okay in the end. If it’s not okay, it’s not the end. ~John Lennon

I woke up the other day and discovered I had not won the lottery. I was devastated. I had imagined myself as the winner and had wasted brain energy planning all the great things I would do with the money, only to now have to deal with crushing disappointment. Actually, that little parable is an experience shared by millions of people every day. How is it, then, that we all seem to be normal, happy people when we could be gloomy and depressed over the loss of our dream, whatever that might be?

Well, it turns out that we have a built-in ability to adjust our emotional state to accept and be content with whatever circumstances life brings us. Studies now show that whatever happens to us, good or bad, within three months of the event, we have the potential to recenter and become content with life as it has been presented. Humans have something that acts like an emotional immune system. It is largely unconscious but helps us change our views of the world in order to feel better about our own situation. (Harvard University, Gilbert)

Maybe that explains why most people I know are happy in life. I know their stories. There is a lot of heartache and pain in many of them. And yet, people carry on, scars and all, still finding joy and purpose in their daily lives. I saw this consistently in my work in long-

term care. People with every reason to be bitter and hostile settled into life and made the best of it.

They weren’t fine, and they weren’t in denial of their condition. Yet they functioned, they played, they laughed, they had meaningful conversations and social connections. They were mentally healthy.

How is this possible? Some might say we were created with the ability to recenter and make good of the bad. Others might say it’s because we choose to be OK. I think it is some of both. We all want to live our lives in a healthy fashion. We are equipped internally to do so. We are given the choice to do so. When someone says, “It’s going to be OK, really,” it’s true. But it is only true if we choose to be OK. Many people choose poorly. I’ve known some of them. I’m just sayin’. •

Phew! It’s been a hot summer around here! We sure are looking forward to having all of our Winter Texan friends back “home” in the Sit-n-Knit Room to catch up and spin a few yarns as we share about our summer adventures.

Let’s catch y’all up on a few fun things now, though. In August, we celebrated The Lamb’s Loom’s tenth birthday. Can you believe it? Time has flown by, and things have certainly grown over the years. Lots of birthday wishes, new yarn, and fantastic door prizes were unwrapped during our four-day celebration. And, as a surprise to us, every day we were blessed by someone from one of our mission groups coming by to meet a few “peeps” in the Sit-n-Knit area and “put some faces” to the hands that have made so many items for them over the years. What a treat that was!

We are so grateful to everyone who adds to our Donation Chest. Because of the growth in giving, we did a little moving around to make room for a second Donation Chest! We just can’t thank everyone

Just Catchin’ Up Special to Welcome Home Winter Texan

enough for all you do to stitch it forward with us.

Our Learn2 classes continue to grow, also. Whether it’s crochet, knitting, or other skills, our classroom is a busy place. If you are interested in a Learn2, they are scheduled on Thursdays and Saturdays. Other classes, that focus on adding a certain skill to your bag are also happening. Just give us a call and come join a class, or bring your own project and join in the yarnfun-filled Sit-n-Knit area.

We know we promised not to have too much yarn fun without y’all over the summer, but sometimes the Yarn Fun just can’t help itself. There are a few more fun things to share, so we will catch you up on more when you get back to sitn-knit with us. We sure are glad everyone is heading home to South Texas and bringing a little “winter” with you. Safe travels south.

Remember, Lamb’s Loom fun is happening every week, in person, at 1102 Tamarack in McAllen. Come join us as we #stitchitforward together! We are open Wednesday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Additional parking is available in the rear via Upas Avenue. Updates and other information are available on our website at thelambsloom.com ~ Prayers ‘n Purls! •

The Shooting Star of Starr County

Special to Welcome Home Winter Texan

The Museum of South Texas History presents The Shooting Star of Starr County: An Out of this World Discovery exhibit, now open in the Cell Block Gallery upstairs in the 1910 Jail building.

February 15, 2023, meteorites landed on a ranch near the town of El Sauz in Starr County, Texas. The meteorites found on the ranch were documented and collected by expert and amateur meteorite hunters. The exhibit will highlight a two-fold story: how meteors fell through the sky across Europe and the United States before crash-landing on a ranch in South Texas and the history of space rocks. Several meteorite pieces found on the ranch property will be featured in state-of-the-art cases with a 360-view.

The Shooting Star of Starr County: An Out of this World Discovery exhibit is made possible in part by a grant from The Betty S. Kelso Foundation.

This exhibit, which will run until August 2025, is included in the regular Museum admission fees. Museum hours are Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m.

For more information about the exhibit, please contact the curator of exhibits at 956-383-6911 or jbautista@mosthistory.org.

Into the Woods Coming to Sharyland High School

Special to Welcome Home Winter Texan

Sharyland High School’s Carpe Diem Players proudly present the beloved musical Into the Woods by Stephen Sondheim, a mashup of classic fairy tales woven together into a captivating and imaginative story. Performances will take place November 7 - 9 and November 21 - 23, with evening performances starting at 7 p.m. and doors opening at 6:30 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at the door on the day of each performance, and all shows will be held at the Sharyland High School Auditorium, 1216 N. Shary Rd. in Mission.

Step into the magical world of Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, and Jack (of beanstalk fame), as they journey through the woods in search of their dreams, only to find that wishes come with a price. This unique blend of dark humor, rich characters, and poignant lessons has enthralled audiences since its debut.

This fall, the Carpe Diem Players have worked tirelessly to bring the enchanting story to life, and troupe members are excited to showcase the hard work and creativity they’ve poured into this production. Troupe president and technical director Sarah Garcia Leija says, “Working on a musical such as Into the Woods has been amazing! There has been so much hard work put in by every person involved. By not watching our production, one would sure be missing out.” •

Travel Friends An Adventure at Sea Can Take You All Over the World

Hello

Travel Friends,

If you’ve been on a cruise, you know how nice it is to step on the ship and not have much to worry about until your journey is over. Once aboard the ship, you’ll be able to relax on deck, enjoying the sun and delicious meals all day, choosing from a long list of fun activities to join, or even just taking a quiet nap! The cherry on top is the chance to see and explore different locations as your ship docks in different ports.

A lot of you have gone on cruises out of Galveston. These cruises, with stops all over the Caribbean, are a really easy way to access the cruise vacation dream. There are ports all over the world that offer unique itineraries for seeing the world. This can be a great option for people who are interested in travel but aren’t sure how to start. Researching and making the right decisions on hotels, restaurants, activities, and transportation can be incredibly overwhelming. A great cruise vacation makes all those choices easier. This past year, as I was traveling, I spotted cruise ports in Sydney Australia; Oslo Norway; New York City; and Boston, Massachusetts. Seeing excited cruisers boarding ships in all of these locations made me realize there’s almost nowhere in the world you

can’t get to on a cruise ship. If it’s on your bucket list, I bet a cruise ship can get you there, worry-free!

Most Winter Texans know that Welcome Home RGV does group cruise travel. We have a few options available all the time for group cruise travel. However, if you and your spouse or a few friends are interested in going on a cruise, we can help you with that, as well. Kristy Meyer is our resident cruise guru and is happy to help you make your cruise travel dreams come true. Booking a trip with us has a lot of benefits. Not only are we experts in travel and cruising, but we can help suggest great itineraries and the best excursions and help keep an eye out for onboard sales. When you book with us, you’re also able to pay for trips in installments, instead of all at once. This makes planning for a big adventure a little easier. Grab your passport and pick a spot you’ve always wanted to explore. Give us a call at 956-687-5115, and let us help you get that adventure on your calendar. You can also see what we have available in group travel on our website at welcomehomergv.com Don’t let your travel dreams wait! Make it less complicated by booking a cruise today.

Perspectives Are You Hungry?

Ilove food! I guess I’m what you would call a foodie. I really enjoy trying out new restaurants and new recipes, and I adore watching Food Network. There’s so much to learn and enjoy and TASTE!

We are so blessed to have such a wide variety of foods, restaurants, and culinary styles available to us in the RGV. It’s a treat to seek them out and fill our bellies with nourishing foods.

In my opinion, being hungry is awful. That empty feeling can make you grouchy and irritable. Nowadays, people call it HANGRY (hungry + angry). Have you ever felt this way, but nothing was satis fying to you? I have experienced this before.

Recently I came across this scripture in my daily Bible read ing. It’s from Jeremiah 15:16 and it reads, “Your words were found, and I ate them, And Your words became a joy to me and the delight of my heart; For I have been called by Your name, O Lord God of hosts.” (amplified version) This thrilled me because I could relate so well. Countless times as I’ve been reading the Bible, I’ve real ized when I’m finished, I feel satisfied…real good inside, like even though I don’t know exactly how, everything’s going to be OK.

Did you know you can be hungry for the Bible, too? God’s word can nourish your soul just like food does your body. In another scripture it reads, “Open your mouth and taste, open your eyes and see— how good God is. Blessed are you who run to Him.” Psalms
