The Connection Fair is one of my favorite events we produce each season… and for good reason. It’s the official kickoff to winter in the Rio Grande Valley, the moment when all the planning, planning meetings--and yes, planning about planning--finally come together. After a very busy November spent reconnecting with activity directors, hosting workshops, and showcasing outings that highlight the very best of the RGV, the Connection Fair brings everyone into one room with a shared goal: setting the stage for an incredible winter season.
This event is all about connection. We connect activity directors with the very best service providers, entertainers, and resources available, people who understand this community and are committed to helping resorts create unforgettable experiences. The camaraderie we share with our activity directors is second to none. We work side by side with them yearround, collaborating, troubleshooting, brainstorming, and celebrating wins together. As the old saying goes, a rising tide lifts all boats. This philosophy truly guides everything we do.
My end game is simple and unwavering: to provide our RV resorts with the tools they need to succeed. When they win, we all win. Activities--both inside and outside your resorts--are the lifeblood of the winter season and a big reason why so many choose South Texas over other retirement destinations.
Please take a moment to thank your activity directors for all that they do. They are the heartbeat of the season. We’re just connecting the
Making Connections Across the RGV
Story and Photos by Eryn Reddell Wingert
They streamed in, collected door-prize tickets, and briefly scanned the ballroom before diving right into Welcome Home RGV’s annual Connection Fair.
Park Place Estates RV Resort in Harlingen served as the location for this year’s event, a two-hour trade show designed to jump start the Winter Texan season for RV park activity directors, managers, key staff, and volunteers.
Approximately over 100 attendees met with over 50 vendors, gathering information and promotional items, scheduling in-park presentations, coordinating health fairs, and booking tours for residents--all in one place.

“It’s about creating direct connections between RV parks and what visitors might need or would like to experience,” says Kristi Collier, Welcome Home RGV owner.
Vendor tables lined the resort ballroom and included everything from dolphin watch tour companies to historic sites, recycling centers to healthcare services, libraries to theaters, and museums to scenic destinations. Promotional materials--including little blue rubber duckies and cooler bags from South Padre Island and small flashlights for upcoming night tours at Palo Alto National Battlefield Park--were shared over and over as attendees visited each booth.
“The Connection Fair serves as a one-stop resource for activity directors,” says Collier. When Winter Texans arrive, their RV park or resort can answer questions like, ‘What can I recycle?, Where is the nearest health clinic? What tours are offered locally?’”
As for the vendors: “At the Connection Fair in Harlingen, I was able to discuss activities and facilities Winter Texans can enjoy while visiting Laredo,” shares Fidel E. Hale IV with Visit Laredo. “It was great seeing the interest RV managers have in Laredo, and we’re happy to share the details with their guests”
The fair was preceded by a Welcome Home RGV Season Kick-off Luncheon inside the park’s Friendship Hall. “It was a great chance to connect RV resort personnel with their peers,” says Collier, “and to get important information for the season.”
These are connections that help ensure a great season for local businesses and winter visitors/ “Great Connection Fair. Met some great people and gathered some great information,” say Jim Golgart
via
The Connection Fair is a precursor to the more expansive Winter Texan Expo. Three days, two locations, more vendors, and free admission. January 2122, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., at the McAllen Convention Center and January 23, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., at the Brownsville Events Center.

I’m Dreaming of a San Antonio Christmas Hello Travel Friends
Dear Travel Friends,
When I think of Christmas, I imagine snow, a cozy fireplace, and maybe the sound of Bing Crosby in the background. Here in South Texas, we have considerably less snow and fireplace snuggles, but I can still listen to “White Christmas,” right? Some of my favorite holiday memories involve the whole family being around and watching those old classic Christmas films together.
Now that I’ve been in McAllen for over 10 years, my traditions have changed a bit, but I’ve learned to love and embrace the warmer temperatures and local holiday fun. Although San Antonio isn’t quite our local area, it is right in our backyard. This vibrant city has so much going on year-round that makes a great little getaway. During the holidays, the lights on the River Walk are stunning and give the perfect backdrop for Christmas spirit. (And the warmer temperatures are a bonus!)
The Pearl District has some great spots for unique Christmas shopping, along with delicious, sweet treats to keep you shopping till you drop! There are festive light displays throughout the city that provide that wonderland Christmas vibe.
When I take groups to San Antonio for tours, I love the variety of options we get to experience. I currently have a trip for Christmas 2026 on the calendar, if you want to plan on coming along for the fun next season. If that’s too long to wait, come along with me this season--in February. We’ll make sure to get a guided
tour of a few of the missions, tour the Tower of the Americas, take a boat ride on the River Walk…and one of the most unique stops is a glass-blowing demonstration that will truly wow you.
For both of these San Antonio trips, we will be staying at the Drury Inn on the River Walk. This provides an incredible location for you to stroll around in the evenings during free time and have great access to local eats and entertainment. Even though it’s only a few hours away, sometimes parking, driving, and planning a trip there can be enough to make you change your mind. This is where I come in and save the day for you! Not only will I take care of all those obstacles, but I’ll also make sure you’re having a great time and taking photos to show the grandkids!
If you’re dreaming of a quick holiday getaway next year or a few days of fun this February, join me. I’ll bring the fun, nostalgic movie and maybe even sing you a Christmas carol, and you bring your appetite for adventure! For more info on these tours and all others, check them out and book one or both online at welcomehomergv.com. •
Valley Regional Medical Center Expands Cardiovascular Services With TAVR
Special to Welcome Home Winter Texan
Valley Regional Medical Center is proud to announce the expansion of its cardiovascular (CV) service line to include a cutting-edge Structural Heart Program, anchored by the introduction of transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR). This advancement positions Valley Regional Medical Center as the first and only hospital in Cameron County to offer this lifesaving, minimally invasive procedure.
“TAVR is a game changer for patients who are 65 years and older and at high or intermediate risk for traditional surgery,” said Dr. Guillermo Salinas, the interventional cardiologist who performed the first TAVR at Valley Regional Medical Center. “It allows us to treat severe aortic stenosis with precision and care, while minimizing the physical toll on our patients.”
TAVR is a revolutionary technique that allows physicians to replace a diseased aortic valve without the need for open-heart surgery. Instead, a catheter is inserted through a small incision in the leg and guided to the heart, where a new valve is placed inside the old one. This approach significantly reduces procedure time, hospital stays, and recovery periods--offering patients a safer and faster path to healing.
The addition of TAVR reflects Valley Regional Medical Center’s ongoing commitment to delivering advanced, patient-centered cardiovascular care close to home.
“Valley Regional Medical Center is dedicated to bringing the most innovative treatments to our community,” said Joe Hernandez, chief executive officer. “Being the first in Cameron County to offer TAVR is a testament to our leadership in heart care and our mission to improve lives through excellence in medicine.” •
Lambs Loom
WMerry Christmas, Friends!
ell, all the presents are getting those last bits of fringe added and yarn ends woven in. It’s the most wonderful time of the year! And here at The Lamb’s Loom, we are so blessed to be getting a few more of all the “handmades” out to their new homes…like a warm blanket for an unheated home; a precious hat and booties for a newborn in the cold mountains of Durango, Mexico; and so many other Donation Chest items destined for places around the world. There are love-in-every-stitch touches and warms hearts going out with all of them.
Our Donation Chest continues to overflow every week, with all of the wonderful items you have made. Knitted Knockers: We supply them to a local clinic for women who have undergone mastectomies. Blankets, scarves and hats are sent out to over 20 mission groups. And the list goes on! We want to pass on the heartfelt thanks from all of the mission groups we serve. Hugs and love are sent from each one. Over the past 17 years, we have heard so many stories of gratitude from people who had a need…and then, in walked someone with one of these handmade gifts that lifted their spirits. Thank you!
The warmth of friendship around our Sit-n-Knit Room is a wonderful gift every day of the year. It amazes us all the time, as we meet people from all over the world. What fun to share time with each other, enjoy a little show ‘n’ tell, and learn something new--all with a nice cup of tea. And our dear friend, Ray, may have brought by a batch of his yummy cookies. You just never know!
Our prayer is that, during the busyness of the holiday season, y’all have a little time of your own to chillax and share a cookie with friends. Stop by this season and #stitchitforward with us! If you would like, we can teach you how to loom, and then you can also add a hat to our Donation Chest.
In case you haven’t ever been by, The Lamb’s Loom is at 1102 W. Tamarack Ave.
Perspectives A Christmas to Remember
by Mark Bridgeman
Years ago, I was working as an owneroperator truck driver. It was about a week before Christmas, and I had a load of freight going from Washington state to Detroit, Michigan. I made my way across the country dodging snow and storms to finally make my way to the outskirts of Detroit, where I would deliver my final load before heading south to Memphis, Tennessee, to see my mom, dad, and brother for Christmas.
Mark and Janette Bridgeman serve with Christian Resort Ministries (crmintl. org) as chaplains at various parks in the RGV. You may contact them by email at markandjanettebridgeman@gmail.com.
As I made my way through town trying to get to a main interstate, I came to a road that allowed me to see the interstate down the street--straight ahead. About 1/16 of a mile before the interstate, there was a sign that read, “No Trucks Ahead”. This small area marked off between where I was and the interstate entrance was probably not even 200 feet long. Being in a tractor trailer rig, there was no way to turn around. So I decided to go ahead and drive through it. Well, of course, it was a ticket trap, and as I got out on the interstate, I saw a city police car behind me with its lights on. It was the morning of Christmas Eve; I had a long drive ahead of me from Detroit to Memphis, and I wanted to get home that evening. As I’m sure you can imagine, truck drivers don’t always have the best relationship with law enforcement, but we understand they have a job to do--and so do we; you do the best you can.
So the officer walked up to the truck and asked if I could open the door, and when I did, looking up at me was one of the most pitiful people I’ve ever seen in my life! He was exhausted and sick from being out in the weather. He asked me for the usual identification, and when I gave it to him, he said he was going to have to write me a ticket for going through the no truck zone. I tried to plead my case with him--that there was no place for me to turn around--but he wrote the ticket anyway. By the time the encounter was over, I actually felt sorry for him, not for myself, despite having just been handed a $200 ticket. I sat there after he left and thought about how difficult his job must be, how sick he was yet still having to get out in the weather and write tickets, and I prayed that this man would receive healing and that he and his family would have a good Christmas. It would’ve been very easy to be angry at the officer who ticketed me or the municipality that decided to put that zone right next to an interstate (where they knew trucks would come through), with no place to turn around. But, living life as a Christian brings no promise that it’s going to be easy. In fact, the Bible tells us that, in this life, you will have tribulation, but be of good cheer, for God has overcome the world. Before a breakthrough of blessing, you often face the hardest fight from the enemy trying to push you off track, trying to get you to be angry and not walking in love with others. But, if he can do that, he’ll rob your blessing from you! Do not allow that to happen. Forgive people and continue to walk in love, and the blessing of the Lord will be upon you everywhere you go.
See, at the time, my parents had come upon some difficult times financially and my pay from this delivery would allow me to give my parents money. I had never been able to give them money before, so I drove from Detroit all the way to Memphis, and we all spent Christmas Eve together. Christmas morning, I handed my mom and dad their envelopes with cash--and one to my brother, too. It’s the first time I had ever been able to give money that way, and I came to realize what Jesus meant when He said it is more blessed to give than to receive. On that day, the Lord allowed me to do something for my family that they could not do for themselves. Needless to say, my family was surprised and thankful, and we had a very good Christmas that year!
I have never forgotten that lesson, and I thank God that He has allowed me through the years to do things for people that they couldn’t do for themselves. It’s a blessing that is very difficult to put into words at times. I would urge you this holiday season to ask God to give you opportunities to do something for others they cannot do for themselves. That kind of giving makes the biggest impact and will always bring you the most joy. In this life, helping others is what really matters…everything else is just icing on the cake. Merry Christmas! •

Winter Texan From Mission Area Promotes Stroke Awareness
Special to Welcome Home Winter Texan
AWinter Texan from the Mission area, who was recently treated for double vision at Mission Regional Medical Center, is now educating other Winter Texans about the signs and symptoms of stroke--and the critical importance of seeking immediate emergency care if you or a loved one displays those warning signs.
Michael Frederick, a resident of Hidden Valley Ranch RV Park in Palmview, said when he suddenly started having vision problems, he called the McAllen VA Clinic. He was advised to go right away to the Emergency Room at Mission Regional.
At the hospital, Frederick was surprised at how many tests were performed, including lab tests. An MRI of the brain eventually ruled out the possibility of a major stroke, but he did show symptoms of a “transient ischemic attack,” sometimes referred to as a “TIA” or “mini-stroke.”
While at the hospital, Frederick learned, from talking to the doctors and nurses at Mission Regional, a lot about the warning signs of a stroke and the importance of seeking emergency help without delay.
In fact, Frederick was so impressed with the important information he received that, upon returning home, he began to distribute educational information on “brain attacks” to other residents of Hidden Valley, as well as at other RV parks.
“I play pool and pickleball at different parks, and I will ask people what would they do if their lip started drooping down…or if their vision suddenly went bad,” Frederick said. “I give them
brochures on BE-FAST so they will know about the warning signs of stroke and know they need to go immediately to the nearest ER.”
BE FAST stands for Balance (sudden loss of balance), Eyes (sudden vision changes), Face (drooping), Arms (weakness), Speech (slurred), and Time (to call 911).
Frederick received the educational flyers and posters on stroke from Blanca Hernandez Perez, RN, MSN, chest pain and stroke coordinator at Mission Regional, who was one of the nurses who checked on him while he was in the hospital.
“I think it’s excellent that this patient is not only educating his wife and family about stroke; he’s extending all this knowledge he learned in the hospital to his neighbors,” Hernandez Perez said.
A veteran of the U.S. Air Force, Frederick said Mission Regional has a very good stroke program. “I appreciate that we have this facility available here.”
Less than a month after his discharge from the hospital, Frederick was feeling well enough to return to Mission Regional on a motorcycle, this time to pick up more educational information to distribute to his neighbors.
Mission Regional Medical Center is certified as an Advanced Primary Stroke Center by The Joint Commission, a national accrediting organization. Additionally, Mission Regional has received the Get With The Guidelines® - Stroke Gold Plus Award from the American Heart Association.

McAllen Public Library Launches Youth Winter Drive to Keep Local Kids Warm Special
to Welcome Home Winter Texan
The McAllen Public Library (MPL) is kicking off its Youth Winter Drive to help keep children and teens in our community warm this season. The effort calls for collecting winter essentials for local youth, with donations supporting the Teen Essential Shelves at the Lark, Palm View, and Main branches.
This year, the Drive has expanded to include infants through 11-yearolds, making it easier for families to access the items they need during the colder months. Community members are invited to donate new or gently used winter wear, including coats, sweaters, gloves, scarves, beanies, and other cold-weather essentials.
“Our library has always been a place where families can turn for support,” said Kate Horan, library director. “This drive helps us meet real needs and makes a difference for kids who deserve to feel warm and cared for.”
McAllen City Manager Isaac J. Tawil shared his appreciation for the effort, noting, “What I value about this drive is how practical it is. A warm coat or a pair of gloves can ease a family’s stress during the colder months, and it shows how our library continues to look after our community in thoughtful ways.”
McAllen Mayor Javier Villalobos added, “The library does more than offer books and programs. It steps in when families need help, and this winter drive is a great example. I encourage anyone who can donate to do so because it directly benefits our local children.”
Community members of all ages are encouraged to join MPL in this effort. Every donation counts, whether it’s a new or gently used coat, scarf, beanie, or pair of gloves. Your contribution helps ensure that local children and teens stay warm this winter. Drop off items at any MPL service desk from December 1 through December 26 and help spread warmth! All items collected will be shared across MPL branches to reach as many families as possible. Donated items will be cleaned prior to distribution, thanks to Quick Spin Laundromat.
For more information, please contact the Teen Services Desk at 956681-3090. •
Rio Grande, Mission, Texas
by Eryn Reddell Wingert
The Rio Grande, known as Rio Bravo on the Mexico side, flows by the Riverside Club in Mission, Texas. In the distance is Chimney Park, home to an historic 106-foot chimney, a remnant of a 1907 pump station. The pump station was part of the Mission Canal Co. Irrigation System, integral to the origins of agriculture in the Rio Grande Valley.
Gratitude at Winter Ranch Weslaco for Veterans Holiday Meal
Special to Welcome Home Winter Texan
Thursday, November 20, volunteers from Winter Ranch prepared food to provide to veterans the following day. The food was delivered to the Veterans Peer Center in Weslaco and served to veterans and their families.
Approximately 50 veterans, spouses, and children were served a ham dinner with all of the fixings. They were all very appreciative. The leftovers were placed in the refrigerator for additional meals to be enjoyed later.
This was all possible because of the generous donations from Winter Ranch residents-over $600. After Bob Coakley, Winter Ranch activity director, purchased the food, $352 remained and was used to purchase gift cards for the veterans, which were given to Anthony Beltran. Beltran is the veteran peer service coordinator at Tropical Texas Veterans Peer Centers Region 38. An additional $252 in gift cards had already been purchased by Winter Ranch residents for the veterans served by Beltran. The gift cards are given to homeless veterans. Beltran often visits RV parks and resorts to speak about the veterans he serves and how they can be helped. He can be reached at 956-520-8967 or by email at anbeltran@ttbh.org.
Thank you to everyone at Winter Ranch who made this day special for our veterans. •

SPEND YOUR WINTER DIFFERENTLY
Why Choose an Annual Site?
• Escape The Cold – Winter differently this season where sunshine and your RV site are waiting for you.
• Lifelong Memories – Your winter place is so much more than an RV or cottage, it’s your own memory maker all season long.
• Your Home Away From Home – Leave your everyday a million miles away, without going a million miles away. Your second place feels like home one minute and a different place entirely the next.
