We’re just connecting the dots
WINTER TEXAN
Your Connection to the Rio Grande Valley

As I read through the stories in this issue of Welcome Home Winter Texan, I felt overwhelming gratitude. You may not hear it as often as you should, but not only do all of you spending the winter months with us contribute an incredible amount of money to our economy, but you also contribute an incredible amount of volunteer time across the Rio Grande Valley, and it doesn’t go unnoticed. From loom knitting, knitting, and crocheting hats, scarves, and blankets for the Donation Chest at The Lamb’s Loom to making quilts for our cherished veterans and helping at the Food Bank of the Rio Grande Valley, you make a significant impact on the lives of more people than you will ever know.
This issue also reminded me of all the fun you (our Winter Texans, Converted Texans, and local retirees) have every day. This week, you’ll read about a Rubber Ducky Derby, a quilt show on South Padre Island, an upcoming Irish Fest in McAllen, and a new Land & Sea tour planned for the fall.
It doesn’t have to be Thanksgiving to say thank you. I actually want to say it to all of you in every column. Thank you for choosing South Texas. Thank you for reminding us how many ways there are to have fun. And thank you for your generosity—monetarily and with your time.
I have the best job in the world!
We’re just connecting the dots…

Indoor kite flying requires a great deal of skill and will be featured at the upcoming SPI Indoor Kite Festival.
SPI Kite Show Features Top Performers, Shows
Story by Ric Cavazos
Photos courtesy of SPI Indoor Kite Festival
Susie and Bill Doan settled on South Padre Island in the late 1990s, deciding to turn a hobby into a business.
The Ohio transplants were too young for retirement back then and saw, on the Island, an opportunity to fill a niche with an SPI kite shop. They favored traditional kite flying but did dabble in kiteboarding in the early years of their business, B&S Kites. The Doans would sell off that part of their business to focus on the traditional kite flying they so enjoyed.
Their insights on kite flying and how to utilize the usually gusty Island winds built up a following among visitors and local residents alike. The idea of having a festival arose, and the Doans decided to make a go of it.
“It all started with a love to fly kites on the Island,” Susie Doan said. “Then, one year, we started thinking about making a festival out here and seeing how many people would come out.”
It turned out many did. For 15-plus years, the

The SPI Indoor Kite Festival draws a full house and rapt attention from spectators.
Doans hosted and organized outdoor kite festivals on the Island. It would become an event enjoyed by all ages and groups, including Winter Texans. In recent years, the Doans have moved their festival indoors, first in Port Isabel and now to the South Padre Island Convention Center. The latest edition

of the SPI Indoor Kite Festival is coming up, with performances on February 3 and the following day, the 4th, with show times going from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
“We are bringing people from all over the country to the festival,” Doan said. “Our performers are the best of the best.”
Skilled Flyers
Indoor kite shows are an entirely different type of event compared to the outdoor festivals.
The indoor events feature performers who are skilled at their craft and incorporate choreographed dance routines into their shows. Indoor kites are lighter in weight and are made of materials that make them easier to manipulate. Still, the degree of skill required to put on an indoor kite show is considerable, given the variety of talents it takes to stage a performance.
“Not everyone has the skill to create their own wind,” Doan said of the indoor kite fliers. “With their movements, they create wind as they swish their kites in the air.”
Videos of performances in recent years at the SPI Convention Center show crowds at rapt attention as the indoor flyers move across the floor, guiding and directing their kites to music during their routines. Every seat is filled, and the event has become popular among Winter Texans.
The 2025 SPI Indoor Kite Fest will feature some of the best at what they do. National champion John Barresi is returning for another performance. Paul LaMasters from Germantown, Maryland, is a fan favorite and will be back at the Island for more performances.
“We are pleasantly surprised by the reception,” Doan said of the indoor shows. “It has grown more than we anticipated. The City (South Padre Island) has been supportive after we saw the need to move it somewhere with more seating, (after first show in Port Isabel).”
Big Shows
This year’s event will feature two different themes.
February 3, a Monday, the theme is “A Tribute to the Big Screen” and music from some classic movies. The following night, February 4, the music used for the performances will be “Texas Skies & Island Vibes.” The latter night, Doan said, will have “a Hispanic flair,” along with dashes of country music. There will be a special effects finale, when the lights will go off and the kites and performers will be lighted for a spectacular conclusion to a fun event.
Tickets are $15 per person and $25 for both events. Advance tickets are required. Call B&S Kites at 956-761-1248 for reservations. •

Winter Texan Spotlight Puzzles and Mystery
by Eryn Reddell Wingert
Julia Lane Cooper creates puzzling scenarios and a whole lot of drama. Last summer, Winter Texans were on her mind. She thought, “It would be really cool to have something to keep our community members engaged with the Winter Texan lifestyle.”

That notion sparked two volumes of Winter-Texanthemed puzzle books “designed to stimulate the wonderful minds of the 55+ community of Winter Texans in the RGV!”
The books include crosswords, word searches, word scrambles, number games, and even coloring pages, riding the popular trend of coloring as a relaxing pastime for adults.
The puzzles are geared primarily toward South Texas themes. “I tried to theme each puzzle from an aspect of Winter Texan life,” says Cooper. Some of the crossword clues include “Birds and Winter Texans Do It” and “Grab your boots and get to scootin.”
And word searches include such themes as “RGV Cities” and “This is the Life.”
Entertaining during the Winter Texan season in the Rio Grande Valley is the life for Cooper, who stays at Park Place Estates in Harlingen. She is a vocalist and has been performing here for the past three years. But this season, she has injected a bit more drama.
“I started out doing happy hours and dances, occasional shows, but one day I wanted to put on something a little different,” she shares. So she put on a Murder Mystery Party for her park.
It was well received and inspired Cooper to write scripts with characters, backgrounds, storylines, and props. Attendees who want to participate receive information and lines at the start of the party. Cooper performs, an “event” occurs--that may or may not be a murder--and using clues, the audience has to figure out the “who done it.”
“The themes stem from the things that I love and that I think Winter Texans would love,” says Cooper. One of her particular favorites was the first one she did focusing on 1920s prohibition; another was set on a cruise ship.
Audience participation is encouraged, with the option to take part or dress up, according to the night’s theme. Cooper hopes to continue to share puzzles and mysteries next season, with plans for two new murder-mystery scripts. For more information visit julialanecooper.com. •
Spotted by RGV
McAllen, Texas
By Eryn Reddell Wingert
This butterfly is a guava skipper, according to iNaturalist.org, spotted late last year in a McAllen, Texas, backyard garden. Butterflies are commonly found yearround in the Rio Grande Valley, especially if your garden or plant pots are home to nectar-producing plants. This particular plant is a red porter weed and attracts all kinds of species. Guava skippers are found in South Texas, Mexico, and Central America.

Hello Travel Friends A Fall Foliage Vacation for the Books
Dear Travel Friends,
When I was growing up, we took two family vacations every summer. One was a “relax” vacation somewhere with a beach or a lake where we could just hang out and be together. The other was what my mom called a “Discover America Trip!” These consisted of visiting tourist spots and learning about all the history in our country. Surprisingly, the ones I enjoyed and remember the most were the sightseeing historical adventures.
I travel quite a bit, and, although I love a long flight to somewhere far away, I’ve learned over the years that there is so much to see within the United States. Somehow, in all the travels I did with my family growing up, we never made it to Boston. This summer, I took a trip up there to check it all out and get the details on how to create a great itinerary for my retired friends down here. I loved it so much we have decided to turn Boston into our next Land and Sea cruise adventure.
September 2025, we will be taking a group of travelers on a great fall foliage cruise out of Boston. The itinerary is phenomenal and hits all those cozy fall vibes. The one port of call I’m dying to get to is Charlottetown on Prince Edward Island. I fell in love with the idea of this magical place reading and watching the Anne of Green Gables books, as a kid. The colors of the fall leaves and the stunning ocean views in those stories were the perfect backdrop to the charming story of Anne. One of the famous quotations in this novel is, “I’m so glad I live in a world where there are Octobers.” ~Lucy Maud
Montgomery. I am beyond excited to finally check that off my wish list and see it myself. It won’t surprise you much to know that Boston has a lot to offer, and getting around to see it all can be a hassle--and a lot of walking. On the itinerary we have lined up, we’ll take the stress out of getting around and make sure you get a chance to see the highlights before we get ourselves on the cruise ship to relax for a week. We’ll participate in the Boston Tea Party experience, take a dinner cruise on the harbor, and have a guide take us on a driving and walking tour of the Freedom Trail.
The questions I keep getting are how to get there, and what if I’m not in Texas yet in the fall?
The great thing behind these Land and Sea trips in the summer and fall is that you can come from anywhere. If you’re in Minnesota, Kansas City, or Texas, it doesn’t matter. The airfare is not part of this package, so if people want to arrive early, drive their own cars, or anything else--that works. You basically plan to meet us there, and, once you arrive at the hotel, we’ll take it from there and make sure you’re having the best time. If you love to travel, have a group of friends to travel with, or want to meet new friends while traveling, this is going to be one you don’t want to miss! I even have my parents coming along on this one. (I guess it counts as a “Discover America” vacation AND a “relax” vacation!
If you have any questions, give me a call at 956-687-5115 or send me an email at sarah@ welcomehomergv.com. •

Perspectives
God’s Pruning
by Sheila Freeland, chaplain’s wife
While walking our beautiful dog, Abby…Wait! Let’s be honest…she walks me…I had been noticing a bush that had been pruned and had begun new growth. What I didn’t expect was the different look in the new growth. It was a completely different color than before. The original leaves were a dark green, and the new ones were a beautiful crimson red. Still the same plant, but that pruning resulted in change. Naturally, we see growth as a sign of success and health, so why on earth would we cut it off? When you look into when and why a gardener prunes, we find it often is done during a dormant season, a season when there is no growth because it is when branches are empty that you see the structure for what it is and can easily see dead branches that could possibly be a safety risk for self or others--branches with disease, branches that are headed in the wrong direction, and branches that may be weak and vulnerable to pests.
It is the same with our own lives. Are you dragging around a “dead branch”? Maybe you have an old wound from the past, an unhealthy relationship, an attitude that has coined you “Negative Nancy,” or anything that is keeping you from growing toward God. Many times we are afraid to give up what we know for something new because-for most of us--change is hard. We all need to allow God to examine us and to prune off what’s dead and not producing good fruit. In John 15, verse 2, He says, “Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth

it, that it may bring forth more fruit.” In His words God is telling us there is a purpose for the pruning, which is hindering our growth. So once that is taken away, we can grow into what He wants and go in the direction He needs. Is this process easy? Not usually. Does it hurt? Typically. Will you always understand why? No. So let this be a reminder for when it’s painful, when you are hurting, when you are struggling to understand…that God needed to cut off the dead branch, remove the disease, remove the obstacle of hinderance to get you to focus on His plan and the direction He wants to take you. Ask, “Lord, do I need pruning?”

Rio Grande Valley Quilt Guild Holds Military Sew Days
Special to Welcome Home Winter Texan
Few things say someone cares more than a handcrafted quilt made with love and given freely from the heart. The Rio Grande Valley (RGV) Quilt Guild has had a program for many years; quilts have been made and given to veterans who reside in the RGV full time. The military service quilts are red, white, and blue and, when finished, measure 60” x 72.”
What has become known as a Military Sew Day is when quilters, as well as other volunteers, meet to construct these cloth masterpieces. On these days, those who attend work together for a single day to complete as much as possible.
Wednesday, January 15, the RGV Quilt Guild gathered for the day, as they have for quite a few years previously, to create military service quilts during a Military Sew Day at Trophy Gardens RV Resort in Alamo.
Quilters from all over the Valley, along with quilters and others from Trophy Gardens, spent the bulk of their day planning, measuring, cutting, sewing, and more to assemble these unique quilts for those who have given so much of themselves to serve our country.
Lucy Klaas, who until very recently served as the chairperson of the RGV Quilt Guild, is part of the Trophy Gardens community. She promotes the Military Service Quilt Program in Trophy Gardens, as well as throughout the RGV. Klaas explains that the requirements for receiving a military service quilt are that the person is a veteran of any branch of the military and lives full time in the RGV.
Not only has Trophy Gardens supported the Military Service Quilt Program, but the Park’s veterans who reside here full time have also been the appreciative recipients of some of these quilts.
On Veterans Day 2024, Klaas, on behalf of the RGV Quilt Guild, presented 11 Trophy Gardens veterans with their own handmade quilt. One veteran said it was one of the nicest things anyone had

Klaas reminds us that our deserving veterans who meet the residency requirement need to be nominated for a quilt. This may be done by requesting a form from the RGV Quilt Guild. •
