welcome books

Dear Friends, Tornados are passing over Wisconsin today and Michael Martin Murphey, who wrote our introduction to American Farmer, is asking me to send prayers. We had lightening, wind, and thunder in New York as well, but the damage is nothing next to what is happening to the corn in the Midwest. I am sending prayers and feeling gratitude for the safety of my own business which has, of course, it’s own challenges. We had a Fall with extraordinary, complex, and brilliant books. We gathered many gold and silver Independent Publisher Awards (IPPYS) attesting to the incredible work that our creators, editors, and designers do. Now, as the lilacs lose their bloom and spring moves on, I invite you to take our less expensive but equally inviting Spring list to your hearts. Last summer, Sam Fink fell in love with the words of Annie Dillard, who spoke of passion and courage as the fuel of creativity. Her words were, for Sam, simple, direct, and forceful. At ninety-two, reading her inspired him to come to our office carrying huge, brilliant paintings that celebrate her ideas. Every bit as inspirational as Robert Fulghum, Give It All, Give It Now will reach enormous numbers. This accordion fold, slip-cased little powerhouse of a book is for writers, students, graduates, and everyone aspiring to a creative solution, be they lawyers, butchers, or politicians. Home Keeper will be the hardest-working 3-ring organizing binder for the home on the market! Clear out those drawers and files of paint chips, contact names, manuals, insurance papers, and receipts. Put them in one brilliant (not to mention charming) place. And, keep it right next to your Recipe Keeper. Stag Night is the next hilarious and utterly over-the-top opus from Chris Measom and Tim Shaner. When did the groom ever have something so appropriate to celebrate him? Fabulous and raunchy in word and image. And, we are back with our third cookbook. We love the best-selling Barbara Scott-Goodman. We love food. We love wine. And we thought it would be marvelous for wine lovers and winery visitors to have a book where great recipes marry with great wine advice. Barbara has done that brilliantly in The Vineyard Cookbook. Lastly, two of our all time best-selling Little Big Books are back with updated and revised editions. The Little Big Book of Love was packaged by us but originally published by William Morrow, where it sold more than 80,000 copies. It has been out of print for more than three years but is now back with updated text and images. The Little Big Book for Dads has been on our list from the beginning and now appears in a new edition to celebrate more than 100,000 copies sold! We will do the same for Moms in 2010. Of course, I am in love with our list and hope that you are experiencing how absolutely good – whether art books, photography books, or gift books – our books are. We do nothing lightly. As we sat with buyer after buyer at BEA, I realized how important it is to touch our books, to open them and experience the gatefolds, the vellums, the die-cuts, the stamping, the tip-ons – all the elements that distinguish them so brilliantly from everyone else’s. And which offer a pleasing contrast to a world that seems more prone to touching keypads than beautiful books. Enjoy.

Give It All, Give It Now One of the Few Things I Know About Writing by Annie Dillard inscribed and illustrated by Sam Fink

“Anything you do not give freely and abundantly becomes lost to you.” —Annie Dillard “Annie Dillard’s words are a song for everybody, no matter what the work one does. As long as you love your work, ‘shoot it, play it, lose it,’ applies.”

—sam fink

The only way, her words infer, to accomplish your dreams is to be fearless and courageous. She suggests—no, she demands—that you get out of your own way: no more worrying that you might run out of good ideas, no more planning ahead and saving things for later. This little brilliant book minces no words. Like All I Ever Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten, this is a book to give to everyone wanting to be great and needing the inspiration to go on. For the graduate, the writer, the lawyer, the student, the mother, the artist. In short, for everyone. Sam Fink is also a national treasure. He has always brought his talent to words that are intended to set you free. Once again his astonishing calligraphy and fullcolor illustrations so brilliantly pace the words he is passionate about. Designed in a unique accordion book format and slip-cased, this is the gift book of the season.

self-help — creativity ANNIE DILLARD won the Pulitzer Prize for her book, Pilgrim at Tinker Creek. She is perhaps best known for her narrative nonfiction, but has also published more than a dozen works of poetry, essays, literary criticism, autobiography, and fiction. Her works include The Writing Life, The Living, Mornings Like This: Found Poems, For the Time Being, and most recently, The Maytrees. SAM FINK is an original. A multitalented artist of inimitable range, Sam first learned to hand-letter from his father. For the past twentyplus years, Sam has both educated and entertained adults and children with his vibrantly illustrated texts of American history. He celebrated his 90th birthday in 2006 with the release of The Constitution of the United States of America to great acclaim. He also published The Declaration of Independence and The Book of Exodus in 2007.
