A week ago, I left New York in a snowstorm and arrived in Los Angeles in my T-shirt. I visited two independent bookstores in Los Angeles that are alive and well — Chevalier’s in Larchmont and Book Soup on Sunset (now owned by the spectacular Vromans in Pasadena). But books were also alive and well in all kinds of other venues: Fred Segal’s and Venokado and Pickett Fences. And, a tree bursting with oranges was directly in front of my window. We are still gathering acclaim for last fall’s books. Everyday Heroes, American Nurse, Afield, and Artists in Love are collecting awards of all varieties attesting to the incredible work that our creators, editors, and designers did. If Afield wins a James Beard Award in May, I may truly fall off my chair! Although we won the IACP Judge’s Choice Award for Cooking with Italian Grandmothers (our first cookbook), just think of a James Beard! My hat is off to Jesse Griffiths, who wrote, and Jody Horton, who photographed, that amazing book. The coming fall is equally fascinating. Led by Katrina Fried’s American Teacher, I find myself again struggling with the politics. Last year, with American Nurse, it was impossible not to think about American healthcare; five years ago when we published American Farmer it began a lifetime commitment to healthy food (including, of course, what I publish). American Teacher is being released just as the American educational system is struggling to restructure itself. Everyone agrees that teachers are the answer but we have been in a downhill spiral for the last thirty years. This is a book in which great teachers’ stories will be recorded. When you are done, you will know where you need to stand. An American Family Cooks is a celebration of multi-racial and multigenerational family – cooking, laughing, and loving in the kitchen. Uniquely American, author Judith Choate with an assist from her sons Chris (predilection for Italian food) and Mickey (definitely a Francophile), is paired in yet another book with her photographer husband, Steve Pool. All the grandchildren are there, too. The food is for every man, woman and child and for everyday, not to mention Thanksgiving and Christmas. You can make it and you will want to, over and over again. Judie (I should add) has a strong focus on local, sustainable and organic. Eric Meola’s INDIA, originally published in 2008, has been updated with a vengeance and enlarged with 32 new pages, packed with dizzying color and accompanied by an extraordinary anthology of Indian writers. In the same extravagant format, Jay Ben Adlersberg’s IRELAND, is filled with great photography married, in this case, to an anthology of superb Irish writing. Both, beautifully designed and printed. My best to you.

American Teacher:

Heroes in the Classroom By KATRINA FRIED Foreword by Parker J. Palmer

C

elebrating educators, who go far above and beyond the call of duty, American Teacher shines a spotlight on one of the most underappreciated, undercompensated, yet critically important professions in the world. Over the course of two years, Katrina Fried has interviewed and written the stories of 50 extraordinary teachers from kindergarten through 12th grade, selected from public and charter schools across the United States. The result is a collection of inspiring and informative first person-narratives accompanied by heartfelt letters from students and captivating portraits taken by celebrated photographers from around the country such as Peter Feldstein, Roman Cho, Paul Natkin and Laura Straus. American Teacher introduces us to classroom heroes like Stephen Ritz of NYC’s South Bronx,

Good teaching cannot be reduced to technique; good teaching comes from the identity and integrity of the teacher. who uses sustainable agriculture as a tool to engage and inspire his neighborhood’s most at-risk special-needs students; Rafe Esquith, a trail-blazing, multiaward-winning educator and author, who has spent 31years teaching 5th grade from within the same four walls at Hobart Elementary School in Los Angeles; and Iowan Sarah Brown Wessling who’s unique “learner-centered” approach to teaching high school English earned her the 2010 National Teacher of the Year award. These are our most unsung heroes, the men

and women responsible for molding and preparing our children to meet the challenges of the 21st century. In the face of increasing class sizes, insufficient resources, and budget cuts, many of our teachers are dipping into their own pockets and personal time to bridge the gap for their students; they are finding innovative and engaging solutions to institutional problems and changing the outcome of countless lives in the process. Hear their stories, see their faces, and join us as we pay tribute to their passion and sacrifice.

knowledge in a real-world context.”

Daryl Bilandzija 7th–8th Grade English, Ecology, Theater, and Gardening

Mr. Bilandzija in the Edible Learning Gardens, where students experience his “seed to table” curriculum.

Over the past four years, Daryl Bilandzija has turned the great outdoors into a living, breathing, open-air classroom for his students. With zero funding and having no more than the ground beneath his feet, Bilandzija converted a half-acre of his school’s campus into a thriving garden and forty-tree fruit orchard, complete with chickens and a theater stage. The Edible Learning Gardens have become the foundation for a revolutionary, interdisciplinary approach to middle school education, one that celebrates and elevates the relationship between humans and nature. Under Bilandzija’s guidance, students use the gardens to learn a myriad of life skills and intellectual lessons, such as how to cultivate and prepare their own food; practice observation; understand ecological concepts; and perform theater productions for the local community.

M

y style and approach to teaching is adaptive. It’s about making connections and understanding the connections we have to each other and the spaces we live and learn in. I use the garden not just as a space to grow food or to relax and enjoy the outdoors, but also as a primary reference point for my curriculum. If you look at my course schedule, it says, “english,” but if you walk into that class at any given moment, we could be studying a concept in ecology, we could be reading about something in history; or we could be talking about the current events that relate to a book we’re reading. rather than teach subjects in isolation, we

“It’s not my job to make a student do anything. My job is to open a window and let them see what’s out there in the world.”

Walter Patrick Earle 9th–12th Grade Agricultural Science & Education

Walter Patrick Earle has been teaching agriculture in a tiny rural farming town (“Have you ever heard of Mayberry?” he replies when asked to describe it) for more than thirty years, having taken over after his father retired from the same position. “I was the son of a career teacher, probably the one person who influenced my decision to teach more than anyone,” Earle says. In fact, Earle took agriculture for four years under his father, and has carried the tradition forward by teaching both his own son and daughter when they were in high school. A 2011 National Teachers Hall of Fame inductee, Earle may teach at a small school, but his gifts in the classroom are widely recognized. With far fewer kids growing up on the family farm, Earle’s mission is to make sure his students still understand what it takes to produce food and fiber. In every subject he addresses—from building irrigation systems to working with livestock—Earle’s approach to teaching reflects his basic philosophy of learning and doing as a stepping-stone to service for the greater good.

I

was born and raised in this little one-stoplight town of McBee, in South carolina, population six hundred. We are a rural community and i grew up working on farms, where i developed a deep love for the field of agriculture. Today very few of the kids in my school are involved in any kind of agriculture, so my goal is to get the next generation involved in understanding where our food comes from. Today there are about 250 students in the high school where i have been teaching agriculture for thirty-three years. i come from a long line of educators. in addition to my dad, who taught ag here for forty-one years, my son, my brother, and about eight of my aunts and uncles are teachers. Most of us lean toward teaching agriculture. Farming is part of our heritage.

Mr. Earle in his classroom greenhouse, where he teaches his students to plant seeds for the future.

My dad was the star of the family. He was always recognized in town as doing such a great job and it was kind of intimidating to try to fill his shoes when i first started teaching. i always tell the story of how this one student came to see me and asked, “How is Mr. earle doing?” i told him i was doing fine. “No,” he said, “i’m not talking about you. i am talking about the real Mr. earle.” Well, that kind of put me in my place. i’ve had seventy-seven-year-old men tell me what an impact my dad had on them. They still remember somebody who taught them in high school! That just showed me how much influence one person can have as a teacher in a little school like ours. Here’s another thing: The building where i teach is named in my dad’s honor and i see his name on the door every day.

“The beautiful thing about charters is that they have created all these different flavors. There are so many ways now to specialize your education. And it doesn’t need to be restricted by the boundaries that you live in.”

Jennifer Rae Ramsey 6th Grade English, Origami, and Gardening

Ms. Ramsey with her students on a library expedition.

Self-described as an “on my feet, sleeves rolled up, sitting on the carpet” type of teacher, Jennifer Ramsey has been doing her part to close the achievement gap in the public and public charter schools of Washington, DC, since 2006. Whether she’s teaching students the tango or asking them to recount historical events in the form of a comic strip, Ramsey is always looking for outside-of-the-box techniques to unlock her young scholars’ imaginations. In 2010 she was honored with the Rubenstein Award for Highly Effective Teaching. She now teaches at the highly regarded SEED School, which was featured in the 2010 documentary Waiting for Superman, and has become a national model for urban public boarding schools. In her student-run classroom at SEED, empowerment is always the word of the day, but fun is never far behind.

I

consider myself a Washingtonian. However, true Washingtonians might try to fight me on that, because I actually grew up in a suburb of DC. My mom moved here from Seoul, South Korea, met my father, and went to nursing school. Having a Korean mother is much like living with a basketball coach—there is always a game plan to follow, and you are always expected to push yourself mentally and physically. I kept a busy social calendar—I was enrolled in every camp, lesson, and team you could imagine. My mother wanted the best for me and exposed me to so much. As a result, I consider myself a product of “all the systems.” I attended both public and private schools in Maryland, a state school and a private college. Each of these educational experiences yielded invaluable character development and social skills. As an undergraduate, I planned to be a physical therapist or nurse. I was also looking for a part-time job, and one of my best friends, who was teaching gymnastics and dance to children, urged me to give it a try. It was perfect—the connection to exercise was relevant to my schooling, and the opportunity to teach dance to kids barely seemed like work. I ended up teaching children in

162

all socioeconomic brackets from throughout the DC area. It opened my eyes to the opportunities I could have to make an impact on educating urban youth. After I graduated from the University of Maryland, I realized I wanted to apply my experiences to a real classroom. So I declined my acceptances to physical therapy and nursing schools and instead got involved with a small nonprofit, which handpicks and places teaching candidates into schools. They decided that because of my background and dance experience, I was a perfect fit for a performing-arts charter school in northeast DC. When I interviewed, it was an immediate love relationship. They hired me pretty much on the spot. I taught kindergarten during the day and attended my master’s classes at night. I received a lot of training my first year—as some charters offer to new teachers. And, within two or three years, I became a training mentor for teachers who were going through the same thing. I was very successful with my kindergarten class, so they had me loop to first grade. I watched as these kids completely learned to read and write. That was really beautiful. Then I moved to a fifth-grade classroom that was in

Esther Wojcicki 10th–12th Grade Journalism

For three decades, Esther Wojcicki has been the driving force behind the country’s most decorated and respected high school journalism program. From her “tech’d out” classroom at Palo Alto High School, “Woj,” as her students fondly call her, has inspired and empowered generations of would-be writers, editors, and designers, and racked up a heap of prestigious awards along the way. Her student-run publications have won Gold and Silver Crowns from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association, the PaceMaker Award, and the Hall of Fame Award from National Scholastic Press, as well as best in nation from Time magazine (2003). For her excellence in teaching, Wojcicki has been personally honored as California Teacher of the Year (2002), and has received the Gold Key Award from Columbia University, among numerous other accolades.

I

’m a born teacher; i’ve always loved working with kids. When i was fourteen years old, a christian private school hired me to teach sports. i loved it and the kids loved me. the program tripled in size after

INDIA In Word and Image Revised and Expanded Photographs by Eric Meola accompanied by an anthology of great Indian writers.

I

ndia: a kingdom of color where every turn dazzles more than the turn before. Where every nuance speaks of pageantry and celebration, of gods within gods, of maharajahs and past glory, of a sense of life and wonder unlike any other place on earth. For more than a decade, Eric Meola has returned repeatedly to India, photographing the people, landscapes, architecture, celebrations, and art in this uniquely exuberant and incredibly diverse country. His journeys took him from the Himalayas and monasteries in the North to the temples of Tamil Nadu in the South, from the color and pageantry of Rajasthan in the West to the tea plantations of Darjeeling in the East. This newly revised and expanded 5th anniversary edition adds another 32 pages of images to this stunning, ambitious book. Camels in the dust at the Pushkar fair; a young boy crossing the Yamuna river on the back of a water buffalo; the spectacular celebration of Holi near Mathura; a lone gypsy in the stark desert near Jaipur…. Photographs are

“[An] exotic five-star vacation in itself. The portraits, landscapes, and photographic studies of flora and architecture are more art than documentary, and are accompanied not by history lessons, but by masterly literary prose… Such words can hold their own with any pictures, even Meola’s glorious photographs.” — New York Times Book Review accompanied by words from more than 30 major writers whose works derive inspiration from Indian themes. Salman Rushdie speaks of a mythical land with a new dream; Anita Desai gives life to relationships; R. K. Narayan shares the

legends of India; Jhumpa Lahiri explores the possibility of love among ancient ruins. Graced by Mukherjee’s startling and loving introduction, INDIA: In Word & Image captures and reveals this mysterious and dazzling country.

Eric Meola’s graphic use of color has informed his photographs for more than four decades. In 2004, Graphis Editions published his first book The Last Places on Earth. An exhibition in England of his photographs of Bruce Springsteen, which coincided with the publication of his second book Born to Run: The Unseen Photos (Insight Editions, 2006), was followed in 2008 by the first edition of INDIA: In Word & Image (Welcome Books, NY), and an exhibit in 2009 at the Art Directors Club of New York. In 2011, Ormond Yard Press of London published his most unusual book, an oversize (18”x 24”, 14 lbs.) edition of photographs of Bruce Springsteen—Born to Run Revisited—that was limited to 500 copies. Streets of Fire, his fifth book, was published by HarperCollins in 2012. Winner of numerous awards, with prints in several private collections and museums, including the National Portrait Gallery, he is a Canon “Explorer of Light”.

IRELAND In Word and Image

october 2013

Photographs by Jay Ben Adlersberg accompanied by an anthology of great Irish writers.

I

reland — the name alone is enough to conjure up idyllic visions of green hillsides. The Emerald Isle is known for its gorgeous countryside, and rightfully so. From the rugged cliffs of the Atlantic coast to the lush meadows and lakes of the interior, Ireland is rich in imagery both awe-inspiring and serene. Yet at the same time, the vibrant streets of such cities as Dublin and Belfast, where modern architecture rubs shoulders with Georgian townhouses and Norman stonework, testify to the island’s 21st century resurgence as the cosmopolitan ‘Celtic Tiger.’ From the remains of a Bronze Age ring fort to the soaring modern Spire of Dublin to the stallions of the National Stud, Ireland is a land of surprising variety. Whether you are planning a trip or wishing for an armchair voyage, whether drawn by an ancestral connection (as 36 million Americans are), or simply under the spell of a land steeped in natural beauty and cultural heritage, you will be captivated by Ireland.

“Beyond the green land, the pubs and the auburn hair, is a rich culture dating back nine thousand years, including invasions by just about every nation in Northern Europe. The Irish have survived as a people, perhaps because of the genetics of hope, the richness of tale-telling and laughter, and the scent of peat in the air.” —Jay Ben Adlersberg This visual celebration is accompanied by more than 30 poems and literary excerpts from major writers whose works derive inspiration from Irish themes, both past and present, including: the romantic prose of James Joyce; the humorous boyhood memories of Frank

McCourt; the celebration of natural beauty in the poetry of W.B. Yeats; and the folk tales of Douglas Hyde; as well as numerous others whose writings capture the unique spirit that is Ireland. More than 200 color photographs will be accompanied by rich, informative captions.

Jay Ben Adlersberg is a contributing artist to Getty Images. He has travelled with his camera to numerous countries to produce photographs for clients including global companies such as Microsoft, Saatchi and Saatchi, and Macmillan. He was inspired by his daughter Zoe, an editorial and portrait photographer in New York City, to pursue photography more seriously. Jay is also a physician and has been voted one of the Best Doctors in New York. For the past 30 years he has reported nightly on medical news for WABC-TV, and—together with other WABC News staff—has won a Peabody Award for coverage of the September 11, 2001 attacks. He lives in New York with his wife, daughter and granddaughter.

Limited Editions

Canyon Wilderness of the Southwest

The Constitution of the United States of America

This awe-inspiring visual odyssey through one of the world’s greatest treasures is an extraordinary publishing achievement. Beautifully photographed by renowned photographer Jon Ortner, this deluxe, numbered edition showcases over 200 images, including 100 panoramas and 10 gatefolds that open to four feet. Shot in over 60 locations across a 130,000-square-mile area, the images cover national parks, national monuments, state parks, wilderness areas, and tribal lands, including the Grand Canyon, Bryce Canyon, and Petrified Forest.

It’s a beautiful thing, our country’s Constitution, and this extraordinary limited edition gives it its due. Nonagenarian Sam Fink’s unadorned, classically simple calligraphy and exquisite illustrations—originally done in pen-and-ink in 1987 and newly painted in color for these imposing folios (15" x 22")—are approachable and profoundly affecting, underscoring what an elegantly simple document our forefathers had the wisdom and forethought to craft. Housed in an exquisite deep clamshell box (16-1/4" x 23-1/4") and lined in blue Saifu cloth, it also contains a limited-edition print of the entire Constitution, newly calligraphed onto one sheet, signed and numbered by Sam Fink. It is a worthy addition to any home.

History

The Book of Exodus

New York Deco New York City landmarks were born during two most stylish and dazzling decades: the 1920s and 1930s. The Chrysler Building, the Empire State Building, Rockefeller Center, and the WaldorfAstoria—as well as dozens of lesser-known but equally stunning office buildings and apartment houses grace this edition. Richard Berenholtz’s photographs of the finest examples of New York City’s art deco architecture are accompanied by literary text from the era.

The Book of Exodus was originally conceived by artist Sam Fink as a gift to his family, now living in Israel. Fink created forty original watercolor skyscapes, one for each chapter in the book of Exodus. This extraordinary text details the Jews’ enslavement in Egypt, their harrowing journey with Moses out of bondage, and the new laws established for them by their God. In these folio prints Sam Fink reaches his family across an ocean—and readers around the world— with breathtaking images that speak to this powerful story. Each watercolor is meticulously hand-lettered with the Old Testament text, in Hebrew and in the Jewish Publication Society’s 1917 English translation. Housed in a blue cloth-covered clamshell box.
