Dear Friends, Obama is our President. This is the single most important happening in my adult life, and the power of it overshadows everything else. I am proud to be an American. Nothing thrills me more. Alongside this profound national evolution, 2008 also brought unprecedented economic challenges to us here at Welcome and the publishing industry at large. Yet as we take stock of this turbulent past season, we find there are many blessings for which to be thankful. A surprising ALEX Award for THE OXFORD PROJECT, a Western Heritage Award for AMERICAN FARMER, along with a multitude of marvelous media validations helped raise our lead titles above the noise and into the public spotlight. Random House was right there to catch the ball and run with it, lifting Welcome’s fall front-list sales to wonderful heights. Additionally, January returns were dramatically down over last year. I now cross fingers and toes that we are facing an upswing – strange and unlikely as that might seem. Deeply honored to have published OXFORD and FARMER in 2008, we now proudly follow with SLOW: LIFE IN A TUSCAN TOWN. Photography book, yes. Storybook, yes. Travel book, yes. Food book, yes. Life affirming, yes. Embracing the principles of the Slow Food Movement, SLOW is the antithesis of fast food and fast living. Humbling and inspiring, it celebrates our humanity and reminds us how beautiful life can be when we pause to appreciate the details. The creator Douglas Gayeton is one-of-a-kind—a Renaissance man you might say. Original in as many ways as they are enchanting, fascinating, and curiously philosophical, his images collapse time, and expand the boundaries of traditional photography. His subjects are the butchers and bakers, the farmers and wine makers, the cheesemongers and mushroom hunters, who populate the Tuscan countryside. We will fall in love with them and their lives will remind us of a way of life we miss even if we have never known it before ourselves. And then there are Welcome’s enchanting and best-selling gift books, utterly entertaining, informational and charming: The Big Book of Me, riotous and sweet, now with a die-cut cover featuring a cutout for the baby’s photograph, it is the ideal gift for expectant parents; The Big Book of Toddlers which is, indeed, bigger than all of our Little Big Books, sized to fit perfectly in the plump little hands of pre-schoolers, and filled with everything a young child will love: stories to read, songs to sing, and games to play. Christmas Almanac is breathtaking in its scope: it has hundreds of ideas – what to give and where to get it or how to make it—dozens of carols to sing, stories to read, recipes to make, even ideas for how to go green for the holidays. It is no wonder that the earlier edition sold more than 60,000 copies. And finally, Galen Rowell’s classic California The Beautiful is back, bigger and better, with a new cover and a new foreword. This is our fourth fall with Random House. I hope you are experiencing how absolutely—across the board—good our books are. Solidly, beautifully, and surprisingly designed and produced. Well written and conceived. We have a great deal of gratitude for Random, and a huge round of applause to all of you.

A beautiful page for each adorable smile. An inspiring quote for each memorable moment. Finally, an album that has a place for everything baby does and highlights it all with the colorful charm each baby memory deserves. The Big Book of Me is a delightful album, embellished with full-color vintage illustrations, exquisite line drawings, and quotations that allow parents to capture, organize, and display the best of all those precious moments and images. The Big Book of Me is a place to record all the essentials about baby's arrival, family tree, milestones, and accomplishments. And unlike other baby books on the market, this book extends further to capture the simple, every day moments as well. Record the silly things that make baby giggle in “That's Funny” with pictures of wide-open smiles. Capture the dreams and thoughts mom or dad has as he or she stares in wonder at peacefully sleeping baby in “Sweet Dreams.” Don't forget that not all memorable moments are sweet! What really gets a baby going can be remembered in “I'm Mad!” This new, updated version also includes a photo pocket in the die-cut cover to personalize the album with a picture of your child. In The Big Book of Me, parents weave together their little one's story with text and images. This beautiful tribute to Baby is sure to bring pleasure, grins—and a few tears—for years to come.

www.welcomebooks.com/slow

In the spirit of The Oxford Project and American Farmer, Welcome Books brings you SLOW: LIFE IN A TUSCAN TOWN, by Douglas Gayeton, a magical and utterly unique portrayal of rural Italian life, and a tribute to the region’s kaleidoscope of charming local characters whose livelihoods and shared culture center on the growing, preparing, eating, and everyday pleasures of food. SLOW is an enchanting celebration of a precious and increasingly rare way of life that leaves you longing to pack your bags and buy a one-way ticket to Tuscany. You will fall in love with the mushroom hunters and sheep farmers, the winemakers and fisherman, the bakers and butchers whose lives are profoundly bound to the rhythms of nature and inherently exemplify the popular principles that define Slow Food, an international movement dedicated to preserving local food traditions and honoring local farmers and producers.

Gayeton’s imaginative and interactive portraits are layered with handwritten notes, anecdotes, recipes, quotes, historical facts and sayings that cleverly bring context and color to the subject of each sepia toned image and draw us deeper into this romantic and rewarding way of life. Each image is titled with a traditional Italian saying and its English translation (e.g. Meglio Spendare Soldi Dal Macellaio Che Dal Farmacista: “Better to spend money at the butcher than the pharmacist.”) Gayeton intertwines the literal with the figurative in a photographic approach critics have dubbed the “flat film”. This unique interplay of pictures and words conveys a thrilling sense of narrative that transcends the page and transports you halfway around the globe. It is a riveting story told in a riveting way: each image is actually comprised of multiple photographs taken over the course of time (from ten minutes to several hours). “With this process,” says Gayeton, “I have managed to introduce the concept of time, both compressed and exploded, into my work.” 4

California the Beautiful

photographs by Galen Rowell edited by Peter Beren

Contribute regionally to the national culture? We are the national culture, at its most energetic end. – Wallace Stegner

As America stands to the rest of the world, so stands California to America – a shining promise of endless possibility. This exquisite celebration of the Golden State has been updated with a new introduction, new cover design, and an enlarged size to suit the grandeur of its subject. California the Beautiful is both a portrait of the state’s diverse natural beauty and, through the incredible voices of its writers, a testament to the ever-renewing spirit that it has come to embody. Aldous Huxley, British author turned Hollywood resident, described the California dream as “this great crystal of light, whose base is as large as Europe and whose height for all practical purposes, is infinite.” Among the other authors offering praise are Maya Angelou, Mary Austin, Ray Bradbury, Joan Didion, Gretel Ehrlich, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, M.F.K Fisher, Robertson Jeffers, Jack Kerouac, Clarence King, Jack London, Henry Miller, John Muir, William Saroyan, April Smith, John Steinbeck, Robert Louis Stevenson, Mark Twain, Nathanael West, and Walt Whitman. Land of innovation and opportunity, California is both dream and reality. California the Beautiful is a gift for all who have felt the lure of this dual promise and who have marveled at the unrivaled beauty of this quintessentially American land. www.welcomebooks.com/californiathebeautiful
