PARTY FOR THE GREEN

TO T H E 2 01 9 -2 0 S E A S O N AT T H E G R E E N M U S I C C E N T E R It is my pleasure to introduce our new season of programming, a season that blurs boundaries and supports our unrelenting commitment to presenting the most compelling artists of our time, investigating ideas, and providing access to diverse artistic experiences that educate, connect, and inspire Sonoma State and our neighboring communities. This season is curated with our region in mind, to serve and engage the place in which we live, giving voice to multiple communities, and joining together in a celebration of diversity. We are hopeful that this season will not only entertain but conjure discussion and reflection on the importance of the performances to the big ideas of our time. Perhaps the most eclectic array of performances to date, this season we feature classical visionaries Itzhak Perlman, pianist Simone Dinnerstein, and violinist Bomsori Kim with the NFM Wroclaw Philharmonic; jazz icons Branford Marsalis, the Maria Schneider Orchestra, and drummer Terri Lyne Carrington; as well as performances from a variety of cultural traditions including the contemporary Middle Eastern sounds of Niyaz, Hawaiian sensation Kalani Pe’a, Bollywood Boulevard, and acclaimed Irish ensemble Danú. In 2020, we will celebrate 250 years since the birth of the innovative and iconic composer Ludwig van Beethoven with three performances that highlight his brilliant compositions. 2020 also includes an extra day - Saturday, February 29 - and we have big plans to celebrate this gift of time. Additionally, we will be expanding our range of artistic experiences to include dance, theater, and speakers. We hope that you’ll find something that resonates with you, whether it be a favorite artist or something entirely new. We look forward to sharing these performances with you!

THE GREEN MUSIC CENTER'S ANNUAL FUNDRAISING EVENT IS A SWINGING SOIREE, FEATURING JAZZ SINGER CATHERINE RUSSELL, COCKTAILS, DANCING, AND SUPPORTING A GOOD CAUSE.

Immersive Experiences

Grammy® award winning Catherine Russell is that rarest of entities – a genuine jazz and blues singer – who can sing virtually anything. Her voice is full-blown feminity incarnate; a dusky, stalwart and soulful instrument that radiates interpretive power yet remains touchingly vulnerable. With an off-the-beaten-path song selection, sparkling acoustic swing, and a stunning vocal approach, Catherine Russell joins the ranks of the greatest interpreters and performers of American Popular Song.

Our mission at the Green Music Center is to present the most compelling artists of our time, to investigate ideas, and to provide access to diverse artistic experiences that educate, connect, and inspire Sonoma State University and surrounding North Bay communities. Several of the artists we present at the Green Music Center engage in activities beyond their public performance. Artists participate in lectures, demonstrations, workshops, and conversations with our academic partners on campus and with communities throughout the region that aim to foster deep engagement with a variety of artistic experiences and themes. Activities are designed to develop creative capacities, critical thinking skills, and encourage participants to investigate communal and personal values while building empathy for the experiences of others. As partners in Sonoma State University’s Arts Integration Program, the Green Music Center collaborates with the School of Arts & Humanities to connect students from across campus in the Green Music Center’s programs. In addition to artists visiting classrooms, complimentary tickets are provided to faculty to bring their classes to performances as a part of their coursework. Additionally, the Green Music Center collaborates with partners to bring artists to K-12 schools for workshops with students, and to offer complimentary tickets to students in surrounding communities for select concerts.
