“I didn’t throw it,” Elky said hurriedly. “It must have flown from the window, and I don’t know—”

Katarina raised her hand with a stern expression. “I’m not used to being interrupted,” she said.

“Excuse me,” the new mother mumbled and fell silent.

“Because you deserve to be penalized for that offense, we decided to suffice with withholding the baby gift. That will be instead of meting out a different consequence to you.”

“I’m strong,” Elky said, “and I think that a week’s rest will certainly be enough for me.”

Babbe didn’t say a word. She just stirred the cup of tea in her hands and set it on the small night table. “Drink,” she said. “You need to drink a lot.”

“Thank you,” Elky mumbled, but she didn’t meet her gaze. Naomi sensed that it would be better if she left. “Feel good, Elky,” she said with a smile. “And mazel tov again! He’s really cute, your little one.”

“He’s really little,” Babbe said. She laid a soft hand on the baby’s blanket. “A bit too small, even. And he needs a strong mother, so that he can grow and develop properly.” Elky nodded. She sat up and looked at the infant in the cradle, a small smile playing around her lips. Naomi hoped for her sake that she’d use her time off to enjoy her oldest child, and wouldn’t spend it worrying instead about the next few weeks when she wouldn’t be working—or

“Are you going back to Vienna?”

“Yes, and I’ll fax you the newspaper we’re giving out this time. We have some brilliant stuff there.”

“Oh, really?” Bernard was getting irritated. “And what about your friends on the outside, Father? What about Olendorf, for example, who, on every visit, takes pleasure in the newspaper and demands three copies of it? And the others?”

“Olendorf? Oh, you think he was trying to play a prank, so he called here?” Josef Wangel was getting angry now.

“Why not?” Bernard was unfazed. “Because I would have recognized his voice, first of all. And second, he’s too mature and dignified for such nonsense.”

Bernard took offense. “If it is nonsense, then I don’t have to continue working on it!”

“I thought you’re doing it as part of your research project,” his father countered pointedly.

“I can keep the forthcoming issues for myself and my professors at the university,” Bernard huffed angrily. “I’m out of here, Father. If you want the newspaper that we are working on right now, let me know.”

“That is definitely strange,” Bernard said. He spun the ring with his car keys on his thumb. “I’ll try to find out.”

“Good, don’t forget.”

And they parted on a conciliatory note.

“Enjoy your vacation!” Pinchas shouted to Binyamin in the morning when he passed by the shul and saw the youth standing near the door, his hand leaning on the doorpost.

“Thank you! You’re also invited!” Binyamin shouted back, “It’s Chol Hamoed today, Pinchas!”

“See you in a few more days! Then you’ll work like—”

“We want it, we want it,” his father said, trying to mollify him. “Just find out for me in any case, because I really need to know: did either of your two friends contact these Hanter people? And give them the phone number of the manor house?”

Josef muttered something and then said aloud, “But still, find it out. That conversation does not sit well with me, and I’m sick and tired of explaining it to you so many times.”

“It’s worth it!” Binyamin called after him. “Try it once, and you’ll see!”

The man waved and kept walking, without another word.

“Gut Moed! At least you joined us this year,” Binyamin told Elkovitz, who walked into the courtyard of the shul just then. “What is with our chavrusaschaft? We haven’t learned even once this Yom Tov.”

“We’ll learn, we’ll learn,” David said, and glanced hastily behind him.

“But please, Schvirtz, for the near future, leave me alone. My wife is very nervous.”

“That’s exactly what my sister said.” Binyamin sounded dejected.

“They are right. Let’s be sure that the phone call didn’t wake any slumbering bears, and then we can move forward.”

“The bears in our region look relatively calm.”

“The person who called knew that there is a fur factory here?”

“No, he only asked about the newspaper.”

“You can never be sure about that.”

truth is,” Elkovitz lowered his voice, “that in any case, even if things are not the way we thought they are, after nearly fifty years, a few weeks here or there are not going to change anything. It’s worthwhile to be patient and to act wisely.”

“You’re definitely right about that,” Binyamin murmured quietly.

He was still in that quiet and morose mood that afternoon, when Zeide, Babbe, Aunt Chani, and Uncle Yiddel came to their house for a festive lunch meal. Until Babbe fixed him with a piercing look and asked, “Binyamin? Is everything alright?”

He murmured something in response. He was happy that his mother was deep in quiet conversation with Chani and didn’t notice anything. She also didn’t notice when, at the end of the meal, Babbe cornered him in the little kitchen, just before he slipped out the door of the house. “Binyamin,” she whispered sharply.

“Yes, Babbe?” he replied quietly. “What’s with you and Naomi? You didn’t have a fight, I assume. But Naomi hasn’t been herself for at least a week and a half, and in the last few days, you’re walking around with the same preoccupied expression. Are you like that outside, too? Because if you are forming an underground against Wangel, the two of you will be the first suspects.”

“Chas v’chalilah!” he said automatically. “And on the outside I’m acting normal.”

“Then you’re really forming an underground?”

Was she joking or not? He shifted his eyes toward Naomi, clearing dishes from the table to the big basin; she wasn’t even glancing at them. Aryeh was speaking quietly to his father, and Aunt Chani and Mamme were still deep in their conversation. He hoped that they weren’t all talking about the same subject. An underground! He hoped such rumors weren’t going around!

“No,” he replied with a decisive shake of the head.

“Fine, but what happened to Naomi one fine day that is also affecting you to this moment?”

Binyamin took a deep breath. A secret known to more than three people is no longer a secret, but their secret was known to more than three people, in any case: Aryeh, Naomi, Elkovitz, his wife, and himself. So adding one more pair of ears that would hear about the phone call would not necessarily be harmful, and if it would be Babbe’s ears, there was a chance that it could be only beneficial.

“I really want to speak to you about it, Babbe,” he whispered, and again, glanced behind him. “We were able to get a telephone for a few minutes.”

“When?” Her face was expressionless.

“That morning when Naomi left the preschool for a long time, and then she didn’t feel well.”

“She managed to convince everyone except me. She did the speaking?”

“Yes.”

“With whom?”

“The paprika manufacturer. She saw a while ago a package that said to check the paprika for worms, something like that.”

“So what does she think? That Jews wrote those instructions?”

“Yes. Does that sound foolish to you?”

Babbe shook her head in an indecipherable motion, and at that moment, Chani and his mother finished their conversation.

“I’ll come over to your house in the evening, okay?” Binyamin said quickly.

“No,” Babbe cut in sharply. “Don’t come to us, and don’t talk to anyone about it. Warn Naomi, too. It makes no difference what you think. It’s far more dangerous than it seems to you.”

Recap: Chayala is finally discharged from the hospital, and comes home with a feeding tube, oxygen, and a monitor.

Chayala is home for three weeks now, and we have settled into somewhat of a routine. It is quite a draining schedule for me, but anything beats travelling in to the hospital each day!

Chayala only eats pumped milk, so I am busy pumping before each feeding. Then I try nursing her and giving her some milk in a bottle, as it is good for her development to practice these skills. Her main nutrition comes from the milk given to her through the feeding tube, though, so after we finish with all that, she is fed through the feeding tube, which takes an hour-and-a-half. After the feeding, she vomits. The reason why is because the flap at the bottom of her throat, which in most babies closes, is open

due to her feeding tube. We tried giving her acid reflux medication, cranial sacral therapy, and even kinesiology, but nothing helped, and vomiting has become part of Chayala’s daily routine. Being that Chayala eats every three hours, by the time the vomit is cleaned up, it is already time for me to start pumping for the next feeding. I do not have much time to do anything except take care of Chayala.

Chayala cries a lot, because she is very uncomfortable. I would probably do the same if I was in her situation! She has a feeding tube in one nostril and oxygen tubes in both nostrils, and a plastic wire attached to her foot. These wires are all attached to machines: the feeding tube attaches to the feeding machine while she eats, the oxygen wires connect to an oxygen tank, and she is also connected to a monitor, which beeps if the oxygen tubes

Chayala has an extremely weak immune system, and it feels like she catches every cold and virus out there

come out of her nose.

Another aspect that is hard for Chayala is being moved around. In the NICU, Chayala lay flat on her back most of the time. Even when I held her, she just laid on me –she really was not moved around much. In fact, Chayala’s head has a very unique shape due to this. She had laid flat on her back for seven months straight in the NICU, and had had two big oxygen tubes flanking her head, one on each side. This caused her head shape to become long, narrow, and flat. She reminds me of a bottle. I wanted to get Chayala a helmet to fix her head shape, but she simply has no space left on her head for another piece of equipment!

Here, at home, Chayala is moved around like a normal baby. Besides for being something she needs to adjust to, it also contributes to her frequent vomiting.

Chayala also gets a lot of therapy. Although she had some therapy done at the hospital, it was not the best quality and did not help her much. Now that she is home, I hurry to start her with top quality therapists to help her catch up on all the skills she is missing. At this point, she has the skills of a newborn, or even less – she cannot even suck properly. She is kept very busy by her speech therapist, feeding therapist, and occupational therapist, all of them teaching, practicing, and coaxing

her to help her progress and catch up.

One evening, I notice Chayala is burning with fever. After a sleepless night, I call the pediatrician’s office first thing the next morning.

“Bring her in at ten,” the secretary instructs me. “But don’t come into the waiting room, because we don’t want her to catch anything from any other sick patients. Because her immune system is so weak, we want to be extra careful. We have a separate door in the back of the office for such situations. Call us when you are here, and bring her in through the back door so we can take her straight to a room.”

We are ushered in right away, and the doctor checks Chayala thoroughly.

“It’s just a virus. Nothing to do besides painkillers and TLC. Let me know if symptoms persist for longer than seven days,” he says.

I didn’t know then, the first time Chayala came down with something, that this would be something we would repeat many, many times throughout the next few months. Chayala has an extremely weak immune system, and it feels like she catches every cold and virus out there. I wonder if I will ever be able to send her to playgroup with other kids. •

APPLE PEAR COMPOTE

Pesach is all about classics and this definitely tastes like one. With fragrant cinnamon and warm apple-pear flavors, it’s a refreshing dessert to enjoy all Pesach long.

Yield: 2 large compote containers

Ingredients:

8 Cortland or Golden Delicious apples, peeled and thinly sliced

6 Bosc pears, peeled and cut into small, thin slices (make sure they’re small as they don’t disintegrate as the apples)

2 teaspoons cinnamon

1 tablespoon vanilla sugar, optional 12 cups water or to cover fruits

Directions:

1. Add the sliced fruits to a large pot.

2. Add the rest of the ingredients and bring to a boil.

DON’T DABBLE.

3. Simmer for 1 hour. Using a potato masher, roughly break up the softened fruits to create a more mushy texture. Serve chilled. Take your musical career to places you

FRUITY APPLE CRISP

Everyone loves a good apple crisp. Here, we take it up a notch with some fragrant tropical flavors. Serve warm with some vanilla ice cream on top.

Fruit Filling:

6-7 Cortland apples, peeled and thinly sliced

1 ripe mango, cut into small slices

2 red plums, thinly sliced

1 fresh lime, juiced

½ teaspoon cinnamon

Topping:

½ cup almond flour

¼ cup chopped pecans

⅛ cup sugar

2 tablespoons potato starch

½ teaspoon cinnamon

2 ½ tablespoons oil

Directions:

1. Preheat your oven to 350° and line a 9” round pan with parchment paper (or grease it with cooking spray).

2. In a large bowl, toss the sliced fruits with the rest of the filling ingredients. Add to the prepared pan.

3. In the same bowl (no need to wash), combine the topping ingredients and mix with gloved hands or a fork until a thick crumb forms. Spread evenly over the apple filling.

4. Bake for 1 ½ hours until the top is golden and the filling is bubbling.

TIP: This freezes well. Reheat uncovered at 200°.

CINNAMON PECAN COOKIES

Inspired by a cinnamon roll, these super-simple, super-delicious cookies are a must-have to have around on Pesach and all year long. Their nutty cinnamon flavor and chewy, crunchy texture are the perfect accompaniment with a hot coffee or tea. Enjoy!

Yield: 20 Cookies (Suggestion: make a double/ triple batch!)

Ingredients:

2 cups ground nuts (such as pecans, almonds or walnuts)

½ cup chopped pecans

½ cup almond flour

1 cup sugar

¾ teaspoon cinnamon

3 egg whites

chopped pecans, for topping

Directions:

1. Preheat your oven to 325° and line a large cookie sheet with parchment paper.

2. Mix the ground nuts, chopped pecans, almond flour, sugar, and cinnamon in a bowl.

3. Stir in egg whites and mix until a paste forms (no need to beat the egg whites).

4. Using a teaspoon-sized cookie scoop, create uniform cookies. Wet the palm of your hands and gently flatten each cookie into a flatter disc (not too flat).

5. Sprinkle the center of each cookie with some additional chopped pecans.

6. Bake for about 14-15 minutes or until golden brown.

7. Let cool completely before removing from the baking sheet (otherwise they will crumble). If you prefer a crispier texture, you can return to the oven for 2-3 minutes.

But I’m going to gently push back on the idea of waiting until after Pesach because, in my professional opinion, this is actually the perfect time to zone in on self-care and establish strong, healthy habits. Just the contrary — when life is at its busiest, that’s when creating structure and focusing on optimal eating patterns becomes even more important.

Let me explain why. When you’re busy and overwhelmed, you naturally reach for whatever food is easiest and most convenient. If you’re not prepared, that often means processed snacks, junk food, or quick carbs that leave you feeling sluggish and bloated. But if you take the time now to get organized and plan ahead, you’ll have access to nourishing, balanced options that fuel you and keep you energized — even during the busiest days. Prepping some simple meals, cutting up vegetables, and having quick proteins on hand will help you make smart choices instead of grabbing whatever’s nearby when you’re stressed and hungry.

And think about how amazing you’ll feel walking into the seder after a few weeks of treating your body right. Feeling lighter, less bloated, and more energized will give you a sense of freedom and confidence — you’ll sit at the seder table feeling like an absolute queen. Also, shockingly, I can attest, that 90% of my clients actually LOSE weight over Pesach, since they have access to so many unprocessed and healthy protein options, so the time to start feeding into that lifestyle is now!

When Zimri did an aveira, Moshe, Aharon, and the Zkeinim didn’t know what action to take. Pinchas, a young scholar who had only learned the Halacha once, remembered what to do and acted immediately. Only Pinchas remembered – not his elders – because his role in the story was part of his mission in elevating this world. Similarly, every person comes to the world with a special purpose only they can do.

According to Targum Yonasan, Pinchas is the same person as Eliyahu Hanavi, who will be the Mevaser HaGeulah, the one to announce the coming of Moshiach.

1. LIFE STORY SNIPPET

Pinchas was the son of Elazar, and the grandson of Aharon HaKohen, whose peaceful nature he inherited. Toward the end of Bnei Yisraels’ 40year journey in the desert, he took action, and killed Zimri, the prince of Shevet Shimon, who did an aveira. He acted not out of aggression, but purely for the sake of Hashem, for which he was rewarded with the Kehuna. Later, he was one of the spies sent by Yehoshua to scout the city of Yericho.

PARACHUTE CRAFT

Take a ziploc bag and cut around all four sides to create 2 squares. Tape one square onto the template and cut around to create a circle.

Cut four strings of yarn, each 1 foot long, and tie each one through a hole in the parachute.

Use the permanent markers to trace over the design onto the parachute.

To create the parachute handle, wrap two pipe cleaners around the 6-inch skewer.

To make the arms, take a pipe cleaner and fold it into a bow. Gently push down on the center. Twist the ends of the folded section together, leaving about an inch untwisted at the end. Next, secure the bow behind the torso by twisting the overlapping parts around the pipe cleaner. Continue twisting until only a small opening remains on either side.

SCIENCE UNCOVERED

To reinforce the plastic for hole punching, place 1½ inch long pieces of tape along four edges of the circle. and then use a hole puncher to punch out a hole in each piece of tape.

Cut a pipe cleaner to 8 inches and fold it in half, leave space to create a loop then twist down, leaving about one inch on either end. Bend the two loose ends to create feet.

Attach the person to the handle with a glue dot. Take two strings from the parachute and tie it to one arm. Repeat with the second arm. 8

While standing at the top of a staircase, gently let the parachute man go and watch it glide gracefully to the floor!

Here’s the science behind this: When you drop something, gravity pulls it down. But when a parachute opens, it creates a large surface area that pushes against the air – also called air resistance – which slows down the fall. The larger the parachute, the more air it catches, and the slower the descent. This is why parachutes help people land safely instead of falling too fast!
