It is not an exaggeration to say that the halachic sheilos that come up in a hospital setting number in the thousands. And the sheilos are as varied as they are numerous.
There are the many Shabbos concerns: how to call a nurse on Shabbos, adjust an electric bed, walk through automatic doors, use elevators and lights, etc. There are the hilchos tefillah considerations: when and how one may daven in a hospital room. There are the complicated halachos of a yoledes ; issues of bishul akum ; end-of-life situations; and so many other areas of halachah that are affected, for both patients and visitors in the hospital.
This sefer addresses all of these halachos, offering clarity and practical suggestions for those who find themselves in a medical situation.

A NOVEL
The circle of light shines on the ground of the clearing. There’s nowhere for them to run. In a moment, it will catch them in its beam. Yocheved grips Etty’s hand, who gives her hand a strong squeeze in return. And it’s in that position, looking like two frightened, little girls, that they’re caught in the beam of Flora Yemini’s flashlight... Who will be the next Goldklang daughter-in-law? Is the shidduch a mistake?
THE EXCITING CONTINUATION OF SILENT MOBILES I
NEW From Pnina Paksher, author of Fear of Falling and Geraniums on the Porch.
RABBI MOSHE ROTBERG is a leading expert on medical emergency and end-of-life halachos. He has authored numerous sefarim on the topic, in addition to giving halachah shiurim to Hatzolah organizations around the country and being rav of a kehillah. In this comprehensive book, he takes the reader through the many sheilos both common and uncommon—that a hospital setting may bring on.
RECAP OF CHAPTER 26: Naomi and Aryeh decide to use their wedding gift money to have Elky bribe Eva Sherer into giving some precious antibiotics to sick little Zuska. Naomi is appalled that Elky intends to take some of the money for herself, as compensation for her work in making this happen.
An older Russian man, an employee at Bentzy’s father’s factory, visits Bentzy at home with a request.
Amoxicillin – Dosage Instructions:
Speak with a doctor or healthcare professional regarding dosages. The normal dose is three times a day, one tablet with each meal, for ten days. Do not take medication without explicit instructions from a doctor; the damage may be worse than the benefits. This is a warning!
“But there are only eight pills here,” Naomi said to her grandmother as they stood in a dark corner in the yard of the infirmary, her hand shaking as she proffered the little carton. “Based on what the package says, Zuska needs thirty!”
“Not her, she’s a little girl,” Babbe replied, studying the tiny letters written in German. “It’s amazing to see this disgusting writing dripping with compassion and concern for our health… Anyway, we’ll give her one pill a day. It will be enough for eight days.”
“The nes of the pach shemen…” Naomi murmured, but there was no smile.
“It’s not like healing is in our hands. We’re just doing our hishtadlus.”
“True,” her granddaughter whispered with effort. “And those who wrote this weren’t worried about our health. If they would
know who the medicine that they produced is being used for…” Babbe nodded and looked at Naomi carefully. “Was it complicated to ask Elky for protektzia?”
“Not really.”
“But a little bit?” Sara Liba had sharp eyes.
“No, nothing.” Although she had asked Babbe to give Sherer’s pamphlet to Aryeh and to tell him that Naomi had sent it specially, someone like Babbe would not peruse the pages to see what kind of hidden message was contained within the strange delivery.
“Because you look a little…anxious.”
“Zuska, Aryeh, everything,” Naomi said faintly.
“That makes sense,” Babbe agreed. “I’m going inside to take care of your sweet student. Be gebentched and healthy always, mamma’le!”
“Amen,” Naomi murmured as she watched her grandmother walk back into the infirmary. The door closed, and she was once again alone, in the darkened courtyard. It would soon be curfew, when they were not allowed to be outside. Should she go to visit her mother? Mama would surely be happy. Naomie also hadn’t seen Binyamin in quite some time.
But when she saw her brother, she was very taken aback. “Don’t tell me that he’s also sick!” she said to her mother, who was
cutting up tomatoes for the letcho she was making for supper.
“No,” her mother said, glancing back at her son. “Baruch Hashem, he’s fine. He’s just been working very, very hard lately. You just happened to meet him now; if I would not have demanded that he come home for supper tonight, he would have stayed at the factory, as he’s done the last three nights.”
Naomi turned to address Binyamin. “How did you stay?”
“I got special permission. I stated that I wanted to work extra hours.”
“Really?”
“Really.”
“But why?” Naomi asked as she took a seat, staring at her mother’s busy hands.
“He wants to help two of his friends get their salary,” Rechel said without turning around. “Friends who are in the infirmary right now.”
“Some of their salary,” Binyamin clarified. His face looked very thin and pale.
“Tell him that you, at least, don’t need anything from him,” Rechel begged Naomi. “Tell him that your salary this month is very big, because of the wedding gift. Katarina gave me quite a clear hint about her plans for it…even though in their view, you didn’t deserve a special gift because you didn’t get married at the manor house. That’s why you didn’t get something more significant, like the Kush couple did. But as a gesture to me, she did increase your salary this month. Did you see it yet?”
“Yes,” Naomi whispered, her lips pale. She suddenly looked remarkably similar to her brother right now. The smell of the frying onions reminded her that with all the running around she had been doing today, she’d hardly eaten a thing.
things that are assur.”
“So what do you want us to do?”
“Maybe you really need to add a sentence, like they do on certain foods in Israel. It doesn’t have to be quite as detailed as you just said, but something that could serve as a reminder.”
“I guess we can consult with our public relations agent before the next round of packaging is printed…” Bentzy paced around the dining room table, and after a few rounds, he sat down on the armchair in the corner, a clear sign that he was thinking.
Dena decided to change the subject. “What did your worker want?”
“Who, Alexander?”
“If you say so—I didn’t know that was his name.”
Bentzy chuckled. “We recently hired a large group of Russian immigrants, and they are looking for someone to give them a Mishnayos shiur in the factory during their lunch break.”
So Duvi hadn’t exactly understood the heavy Yiddish. “Really?”
Who wants to buy something when the manufacturer says clearly that it might be spoiled?
“Good, I’m happy to hear that. Believe me, you deserve it. So please tell Binyamin that nothing will happen if Aryeh doesn’t get a salary this month, and that you’re fine. Maybe he’ll listen to you.” Rechel ignored the fact that the subject of their conversation himself was sitting and listening to every word.
“He’s not used to such hard, physical work, and I’m afraid for his health. Tell him that you don’t need it, okay?” ***
“The new packaging has already been printed,” Bentzy said, putting aside his newspaper. He couldn’t concentrate on it right now. “And to go and write something like ‘Check the spices for worms and insects before use’ will deter every potential buyer from buying the product. Who wants to buy something when the manufacturer says clearly that it might be spoiled?”
“But it might be,” Dena said quietly.
“Everything might be,” Bentzy replied. “Honestly, I don’t understand what you are worried about.”
“I’m worried that a Jew will buy the spices without knowing that they need to be checked for infestation, and then he might eat
“Yes, they want to learn a bit, he says, and he suggested that I learn with them.”
Dena moved the small, decorative plant that her mother-in-law had bought off the coffee table, wiped away a few flecks of dust, and replaced it. “Ah.”
“They are older people, who remember a bit here and there from their grandparents, or maybe their parents,” Bentzy continued. “After seventy years of Communism, there really isn’t much that they know…”
“What did you say his name is?” Dena tried to keep her voice even, and not betray how focused she was on a certain point.
“Alexander.”
“And he’s sixty?”
“A little younger—I think he’s in his midfifties.”
“So he was already born at the peak of Communism…”
“Yes, and his children know nothing about Yiddishkeit, he tells me.” Bentzy toyed with the empty ashtray sitting on the wood table. “But he still remembers his father ‘reading a big book,’ and warning him not to tell anyone in his class about it… He also had an uncle who disappeared in Siberia because he taught Torah in secret or something. He doesn’t really know, he just remembers his aunt coming to their house and sobbing to his mother… All kinds of stories like that.”
“Wow. Those are chilling stories.”
“I know. It’s interesting; I recently heard lots of stories like these— like I told you, we recently hired a large group of Russian Jewish immigrants, and each one has his own stories. These men are trying to save up some money while they decide if they are going to make aliyah, or if they’re going to try it out in America.”
Dena went to the kitchen and came back with two cups of tea. Autumn in Vienna was much colder than in Eretz Yisrael, and

this was just a taste of what awaited them in the winter. She sat down on the other side of the table and pushed the bowl of fruit toward the middle. “Should I peel an orange for you?” she asked her husband.
He shook his head. “No thanks.” He seemed thoughtful, though she had no idea what he was thinking about. The stories of the Russian workers? The Mishnayos he would be teaching, maybe, halevai?
“They consult you about whether to make aliyah or go to America?”
“Or stay here. They don’t exactly consult me, but I hear them talking about it amongst themselves, and sometimes they talk to my father about it, or to me.”
“If someone would ask me, of course I would advise them to make aliyah,” she said, her voice laced with her own longing.
“Obviously.” He laughed. “But the situation there for Russian immigrants isn’t great, so I for sure would not take responsibility for such a decision.”
“But that’s not what he came to talk to you about, right? He spoke about a shiur, didn’t he?” Was she nagging too much? She hoped not, though she was afraid that she was. But Bentzy was so immersed in his thoughts, he seemed to hardly notice her questions, or the answers that he was offering in a distracted manner.
“Right.” Without noticing, he took the orange and the woodhandled knife that was stuck into the bowl and peeled the fruit in one long spiral. “We have about nine Russian Jews, all aged twenty-five to sixty. There’s one more, but I’m not sure his mother was Jewish. Anyway, they really want to learn more, and my father says…” Bentzy fell silent.
“That?”
“I don’t know if you’re going to want to hear this. He says that in Russia, they got used to trying to find favor in the eyes of the employer, and to please him as much as possible. So it’s not really clear that they want specifically the learning and the Torah knowledge. Maybe this is simply their way of currying favor with my father, and with me.”
As he’d thought, Dena did not like this thread of thought at all. She would have liked to think that Jews were thirsting to become closer to Hashem after years of being cut off from Yiddishkeit. But she preferred not to respond to this specific point. “Either way, will you start a shiur for them? It’s a real responsibility to learn with them.”
“Yes…” he replied, looking thoughtful again. “I’m also trying to figure out whether we can give him more work hours, and doing what. He’s pretty strapped, financially.”
“Oh, he wanted that too?” Her finger meandered along the frame of the table, back and forth.
“Yes.”
“I thought you were thinking about the shiur, the opportunity to draw Yidden closer, and all that.”
“It’s actually quite a task.” He shook her off. “And that’s why I suggested my father for this. After all, such a responsibility is really more for a rav or some other chashuve person. Not so much for me.”

Recap: Casey taunts Mr. Kleinberg, saying that all Orthodox Jews steal. When Mr. Kleinberg hears this, he starts to feel powerful regret. He also realizes how unlikely it is for him to be found innocent, and begins to feel panic about his situation.
Pessy decides to call her mother immediately after PTA, realizing how much her mother cares. They make up to meet in a café to celebrate the milestone of her PTA by going out for lunch. Pessy is excited to share her stories with her mother, who she knows will be interested in every detail.
Mrs. Tabak tells Mrs. Gordon that Bruchi’s mother turned down the offer of extra help for Bruchi. Mrs. Gordon wonders if there is anything she can do for her student, especially since she is under pressure to decide about the job at her sister-in-law Devorah’s agency.
Who did that Mrs. Tabak think she was, anyway? Mrs. Kleinberg seethed to herself as she banged a coffee cup down on the counter.
“So do you think Bruchi could use a little extra help, like a big sister arrangement, or something like that?”
Mrs. Tabak had suggested. How dare she! Turning the Kleinbergs into a community nebach case, right there. It was a sharp blow, coming from a teacher at the institution that was always begging for their sponsorships.
Now, instead of begging, they were sweetly offering their help. Well, Mrs. Kleinberg had just one response to that.
“No, thank you, I think Bruchi is managing just fine,” Mrs. Kleinberg had responded, putting as much acid in the words as she could.
Not that Mrs. Tabak had noticed, much.
"Getting a little help can go a long way to making sure
Bruchi grows from this challenge,” Mrs. Tabak had pressed.
Mrs. Kleinberg had been sure she would be frothing at the mouth soon. “No, thank you!” she’d expelled, with force.
That had finally gotten the message across, and Mrs. Tabak had gone back to saying what a pleasure it was to have Bruchi in their eighth-grade class.
Now, sitting at the kitchen table gripping her coffee mug, Mrs. Kleinberg felt her rage bubble up once again.
She’d known it was a bad idea to go to this PTA, where everyone seemed to look at her like the nebach of the town. She’d wanted to prove them all wrong, but apparently, they’d seen straight through her stiffupper lip demeanor.
Sudden, stinging tears appeared in the corners of her eyes, and she blinked them furiously away. She sucked up some boiling coffee to shock her system into obedience.
“Mommy? You’re home?” Bruchi stuck her head into the kitchen just then.
Mrs. Kleinberg picked up her weary head from the steaming coffee. “Yes, I just got home.”
“What did Mrs. Tabak say?”
“Only good things, of course,” Mrs. Kleinberg said perfunctorily.
Bruchi looked at her mother, steadily. If she saw the tears in her mother’s eyes, she didn’t mention it.
“That’s good,” she said, going to the cabinet and taking out a bag of chips. Who had refilled them? Had it been Perry?
“She asked if you’d want to have help, like a big sister or something,” Mrs. Kleinberg told her daughter.
“No way! I’m not interested!”
“Of course, I figured. I told her so.”
“Good.”
There was silence for a moment in the kitchen.
“Did she say anything else?” Mrs. Kleinberg, who had returned to sipping her still-steaming coffee, looked up.
“Hmm, let me see if I remember what she said…I think she said something like that you are a very powerful presence in the classroom, I wasn’t surprised to hear that, of course. And that your classmates really look up to you, and she hopes you’ll use that for the positive, or something like that.”
Bruchi listened to every word carefully.
“Not anymore,” she muttered.
“What?”
“No one looks up to me anymore,” Bruchi said, and her eyes brimmed with the same traitorous tears that her mother had banished.
If they cried now, they would never stop. Instead, Bruchi used brute force to push her tears back.
“Don’t be silly,” Mrs. Kleinberg said. But her words were hollow, and they both knew it.
“Are your friends really giving you a hard time?” Mrs. Kleinberg asked, displaying real concern for her daughter for the first time.
“Not Zlaty, but everyone else looks at me like I fell off the moon. No one’s coming over for a party anymore, you know.”
“Well, if this, you know, if the situation continues, you can always switch schools for high school,” Mrs. Kleinberg said, not knowing any other way to assuage her daughter’s angst. Bruchi didn’t respond.
It was the first time any of them had acknowledged that the “situation” was more than just a passing cloud over their previously serene existence. That they might actually have to redesign their lives around this new reality.
“What’s happening with Tatty?” Bruchi asked, switching the subject.
Mrs. Kleinberg shrugged. “Nothing’s happening. Until the bail hearing in two days from now, we really won’t know anything.”
That provoked another round of silence, during which Mrs. Kleinberg emptied her coffee mug and placed it in the sink.
“Look, Tatty would want us to continue living our lives like normal,” Mrs. Kleinberg started saying, turning back to Bruchi.
“But nothing’s normal about this!” Bruchi said.
“I know, I know. But just try to pretend that nothing’s changed. That’s all.” Mrs. Kleinberg was about to walk out of the kitchen, when her phone rang. It was Shachne.
“Did you hear what happened?” Shachne’s words tumbled over each other.
“What happened?”
“Something huge. A huge breakthrough for Shmiel! Maybe they’ll find him innocent after all!”
“What happened?” Mrs. Kleinberg repeated.
***
“Devorah’s pressuring me, that’s why,” Shifra Gordon said to her husband Nachman. “So it’s time to get serious. Do I leave my job? If yes, do I take this one? And why you still think you can’t help me decide is beyond me.”
Nachman chuckled. “Don’t you see how I’m helping you decide? You wouldn’t talk all this out to an empty room, right? It’s only because I’m here that you feel like you’re getting a listening ear.”
“So, Listening Ear of Mine, listen up to this. Devorah Messinger, who happens to be my darling sister-in-law, called me today, again, to find out if I’ve made my decision. And what did I tell her? No, dear darling sister-in-law, I have not made my decision yet.”
“So what did she say?”
“When will you know by?”
“And what did you say?”
“I Don’t Know!”
“You don’t know what you said?” It was inevitable, but Mrs. Gordon
groaned anyway.
“Right, so you just don’t know what your decision is, I understand,” her husband spared her from having to explain the obvious. “Why don’t you take a vote?”
Mrs. Gordon scrutinized his face, trying to figure out where he was coming from now.
“I’m actually serious for a change,” Nachman assured her. “I really mean it. I think a vote is the best way to go about this.”
“Who gets a vote?” Mrs. Gordon asked skeptically.
“Anyone who will be affected by your decision,” Nachman responded smoothly.
“So my students all get a vote?”
“For example. And all your kids, of course.”
“But it’s not equal,” Mrs. Gordon argued. “My kids should get more of a priority, even if they have less votes.”
“Fine, so give them each some extra votes. The point isn’t the actual tally. The point is to see what you want to take into account.”
“What do you mean?”
“Like, who really will be happier if you leave? Who will lose out? Are the benefits worth the losses, for these people?”
Mrs. Gordon realized that her husband meant his suggestion seriously.
“So how does this vote work, exactly?”
“Here, I’ll bring some paper and a pen,” Nachman said eagerly. He returned two minutes later with a pad of yellow Post-its and a blue pen.
“Okay, now we make a pile for ayes and a pile of nays,” he said, marking off two spots on the dining room table surface with labeled Post-It notes. “Aye is for yes, take this job, and nay is for no, do not take the job.”
Mrs. Gordon looked on, bemused.
“Okay, and then?”
“Then, we start going through each person who gets a vote, and we decide together what their
vote is.”
“Oh, I get it,” Mrs. Gordon said. “So you’re letting everyone help me make my decision, huh?”
“Exactly,” Nachman said. He held the pen poised over the yellow Post-It pad. “So, who would you like to start with?”
The first person to pop into Mrs. Gordon’s head was, unsurprisingly, her oldest daughter, Chayala.
“Well, let’s start with Chayala,” she said, a smile lurking in her voice. “I think she’s given a pretty loud vote on the whole topic. She’ll do anything so I should stay principal, apparently.”
Nachma wrote “Chayala” on the PostIt note.
“She definitely has her opinion on the matter,” he said with a chuckle, placing the note on the “Nay” marked location.
But if Chayala was first, Shayala was second.
“Then goes Shayala,” Mrs. Gordon said. Her kids’ votes came first, that was for sure. “And I think he definitely would want me to take a different job. A job where I wouldn’t have to be busy at home, and I would never have to work such crazy hours. I would be able to be calmly home for him as much as possible.”
“And you think that the job in Devorah’s office will be better in those aspects,” Nachman remarked calmly, writing Shayala’s name on a note.
“Yes, for sure.” Mrs. Gordon said. No other job could compete with the pressure she had from being a principal. She was sure of it.
“Next?”
“I guess let’s do the rest of the kids, then,” Mrs. Gordon said. “I’m sure they would all also want me to stop being a principal and just work in an office instead. Except maybe Perela, who loves to answer the phone and be my secretary.” She cracked a smile, and Nachman laughed.
“Well, then, she definitely wants to vote for keeping you in Bnos Golda, right?” Nachman said.
“Yes, but that’s just silly. Of course, she’ll be happy if I were home more, around more, and had more time for her.”
Nachman kept busy writing all their children’s names and placing them on
the “Aye” pile.
“Okay, so who else?”
“Who else gets a vote? My students, my teachers?”
“Start with the teachers,” Nachman instructed.
Mrs. Gordon thought of her teachers. Miss Cooper, the new fourth-grade teacher who’d lit up when she’d passed on the compliments at the PTA.
“Miss Cooper,” she said aloud. “I think she’d want me to stay.”
Nachman wrote out the Post-It.
“Well, really, which teacher wants their boss to leave on them? Of course they’d all want me to stay.”
“You don’t give yourself enough credit,” Nachman said. “They want you to stay because you’re a fabulous boss and a great principal. That’s why they want you to stay.”
“Fine, that’s possible,” Mrs. Gordon said, her cheeks blushing at the edges. They went through all the teachers that taught under her, Mrs. Gordon picturing each of them receiving the news that their beloved principal was leaving. The reactions she imagined made her cringe.
“Then there’s my students,” Mrs. Gordon said when they were finished. Her students, whom she invested in far more than they knew about.
The first ones she thought about were Bruchi and Perry, the students who had been uppermost in her mind lately.
What would Perry say if she found out that her beloved mentor was now working in an agency office instead of continuing to talk to girls who needed a boost in her cozy school office?
Perry would be shocked. She would probably be disappointed. But the girl was such a good soul, she would probably judge Mrs. Gordon favorably.
Mrs. Gordon turned to her husband.
“Is this what you had in mind? For me to picture everyone’s reactions to the news, so that I realize just what I’m getting myself into?”
“Part of it, yes,” Nachman nodded.
“Definitely a good idea to be prepared,” Mrs. Gordon said.
“IS THIS WHAT YOU HAD IN MIND? FOR ME TO PICTURE EVERYONE’S REACTIONS TO THE NEWS”
But there was one person’s reaction she hadn’t thought of yet.

QAre acai bowls really healthy? Will I gain weight from having them twice a week as a meal?
AAcai bowls have become a trendy breakfast and snack option, often praised for their vibrant colors and perceived health benefits. But are they really as healthy as they seem? Let’s take a closer look at what’s inside these popular bowls and whether they live up to the hype.
What is the Acai Berry? The acai berry is a small, dark purple fruit that comes from the acai palm tree, native to the Amazon rainforest. It has been celebrated for its high levels of antioxidants, fiber, and healthy fats, making it a superfood in the eyes of many health enthusiasts. While acai berries themselves are nutritious, the way acai bowls are often prepared can turn this healthy fruit into a less-than-ideal meal option. Why is that?
1. High Sugar Content: Acai bowls typically include a blend of acai puree with other fruits like bananas, strawberries, and blueberries. On top of this, they're often sweetened with honey, agave, or other sugary toppings. This combination results in a high sugar content, which can lead to a rapid spike in blood sugar levels. This is particularly concerning for those monitoring their glycemic index intake, as high-glycemic foods can contribute to energy crashes and increased hunger shortly after eating.
2. Added Fat and Calories: Many acai bowls come with toppings such as granola, coconut flakes, nut butters, and seeds. While some of these toppings have their own health benefits, they also add extra fat and calories to the bowl. This can make an acai bowl quite
calorie-dense, potentially leading to weight gain if consumed frequently and not balanced with other meals.
3. Lack of Protein: Acai bowls are often low in protein, which is crucial for keeping you feeling full and satisfied. Without adequate protein, you might find yourself feeling hungry again soon after finishing your acai bowl. This can lead to overeating later in the day.
While acai berries have been touted for their potential weight loss benefits due to their antioxidant content, acai bowls themselves might not be the best choice if you're trying to lose weight. The high sugar content can lead to fat storage if the energy from these sugars isn't burned off quickly. Additionally, the lack of protein and high-calorie toppings can make it challenging to maintain a calorie deficit necessary for weight loss.
How can you make your acai bowl healthier?
1) Reducing added sugars: Skip the honey or agave, and use unsweetened acai puree.
2) Adding protein: Incorporate a scoop of protein powder or a handful of nuts to increase satiety.
3) Limiting high-calorie toppings: Use fresh fruit and a small amount of granola or seeds for added texture without overloading on calories.
4) Make your acai bowl mini so that your portion is half the size of a typical large acai bowl.
By making these adjustments, you can enjoy a more nutritious acai bowl that better aligns with your health and wellness goals.

Mordechai sank into his seat in the beis midrash and let out a spontaneous sigh. It had been one of the most challenging days of his life.
“What’s the matter?” his chavrusa Yitzchak asked, concern evident in his voice.
Mordechai tried brushing him off, but ever a good friend, Yitzchak pushed Mordechai to share.
“I went for my routine annual physical… the doctors ordered more tests… and the results…” Mordechai’s voice trailed off, unable to complete his sentence. He sighed again. “Oh… I simply don’t know how to share this with my wife and children…”
At nearly 40, Mordechai was simply too young to resign to his fate. Surgery, treatments – a whole new world loomed ahead, post-diagnosis.
“Did you try Tehillim Kollel?” Yitzchak asked.
“That doesn’t sound like a doctor, does it?” Mordechai replied.
It didn’t take much convincing for Mordechai to agree to call in with his name so a minyan of bnei Torah would daven for him in Meron, in Ribnitz, and other mekomos hakedoshim He asked that they have him in mind, that the treatment should be effective and that he should be able to handle the side effects.
Several days later, Mordechai went back to his doctor for more testing before beginning treatment. He was in for a shock – a good shock.
“The growth is benign!” the doctors pronounced. With just a good dose of medication, he would feel better in no time.
Yitzchak was the first to receive a phone call with the happy news.
“You see!” Yitzchak said ecstatically. “Dovid Hamelech promises us, ‘ םהיתוקוצממ
,’ (Tehillim 107:6). When a person in pain calls out to Hashem, Hashem helps! You followed Dovid Hamelech’s own advice by signing up to Tehillim Kollel… which made his words come true!”
Dovid Hamelech promises. Salvation is near.

We can learn from the story of Korach how important each person is. Some people might think that they are more important as they have a higher position than other people, but really, we are all needed and we are all essential, in making this world a better place.
There were a group of builders who decided to refurnish a house together, they wanted to work quickly so each builder was designated a specific job. One worked on the beds while the other build the light fixtures and another built the Cabinets. Happily, they all got to work, though pretty soon something started bothering one of the workers. He felt like his job, building the doorways, was insignificant. He wanted to do something more important, maybe the tables and chairs! He disregarded the first assignment and went to work on the chairs. Another worker also felt unhappy with his job, putting the light fixtures in and he decided to work on the tables and chairs as well. By the time the house was supposed to be finished, everyone realized that they couldn’t put up the doors because there were no doorways and the lightbulbs couldn’t go in because there were no fixtures to put them in.
What are 2 things that you do regularly (that you might think are not important) but actually make a difference to your family, friends or those around you?
Korach felt the same way, he didn’t like that there were levels of importance, some are leaders and others followers. He felt that everyone should be on the same level with no one leading and no one following. What Moshe tried to explain and what Korach didn’t understand, is that in order for this world to exist we need levels and we need each and every one of them. Just like the sun rises in the daytime and the moon in the night, just like some days are ordinary and some are holy like Shabbos and Yom Tov, each are necessary. The ordinary day must be there just like Shabbos. the moon and sun must switch off, neither can be without the other. Us too, each person, the Rabbi, the teacher, the janitor and the garbage collector are all needed and are all important in making the world complete.

ORDER TILL TUESDAY
might be halachic ramifications, and we had to ask a sheila.
I felt sick when I heard. This was our house, I could practically see myself living there already. It belonged to us! The seller himself had chosen us as the buyers!
I was scared to hear the outcome of a call to our Rav and Dayan, but too apprehensive to postpone it.
“Just call,” I told my husband after two hours of pacing as I restlessly picked up toys and socks from the floor and mindlessly dropped them back a moment later.
He called. Our Rav listened carefully, said he would think about the matter, and get back to us.
I tried to wash the laundry, but the image of the laundry room in the new house swam before my eyes.
I tried to make supper, but the image of that large kitchen with the picture window haunted me.
I gave up.
We waited in nervous anticipation, hoping for the best.
And then the call came: Our Rav said that halachically, the one who gave an offer first had first rights to the house. We had to ask him and only if he refused to buy it did we have the rights to it.
I cried when I heard. My husband was stoic.
“It’s difficult, but this is what we need to do.” He said resolutely.
He procured the number of the person who gave the first offer and dialed. It was the hardest phone call he ever had to make, and the longest few minutes in my life as I tried to make out the story from the one-sided conversation I was privy to.
When my husband pressed end, he took a deep breath.
“He wants to buy the house,” he said simply.
Two days later, we heard that they were in contract.
I would be lying if I said that we just accepted it lovingly, said that obviously this was bashert, and happily continued living in our two-by-two.
In reality, it was hard. Very hard. I trudged through my days, feeling the walls closing in on me more than ever.
“Hashem,” I silently cried, “All I asked for was a bigger house to serve you better, with more joy and harchavas hadaas. All I wanted was more space for the precious kinderlech you granted me. I can’t continue like this, we need that house, please!”
I worked on my Emunah, listened to shiurim, and tried to verbalize that this was the best thing for us. And after two weeks, it became easier to accept.
By a month later, I was able to say - and feel, that Hashem must have a better plan for us, and obviously, this wasn’t the right house for us.
My husband comforted me and relentlessly continued to plow through the listings.
I’m sure you’re expecting an ending with a big bow on top - that we found an even better house, for an even better price, and were zoche to see how Hashem really had something much better in store for us.
But reality isn’t only comprised of pictureperfect endings.
No, we continued to look for something else as we continued to live in our tiny apartment. It was more difficult than you can imagine, but I knew that this was the right thing to do.
Baruch Hashem, half a year ago we closed on a different house.
It’s much further out of the area, not really in the area we wanted to buy.
It’s smaller, older, and does not have a tenant apartment for added income.
The area is not so populated yet - we only have one heimish neighbor and one shul a few blocks away.
But this is the house Hashem decided is best for us, and we accept that ba’ahavah.
Maybe one day in the future we’ll realize why this house is better for us.
Then again, maybe not.
But our job is only to do what’s right, and trust that Hashem will make it all right. •
As told to Esty Steinmetz
We went to look at a house only a few minutes away, for a great price, only to realize very quickly after touring the dilapidated property why it was priced that way. It would need costly renovations before we could even think of moving in.
In the beginning, just the thought that we were going to move kept me going, and made our little apartment seem just a little bit bigger and more livable. But after five months of scouring the market with no success, our spirits began to sag .
Every time my toddler needed the bathroom while I was bathing my baby in our only bathroom, I would let out an exasperated sigh.
Eeach time my four-year-old woke up at the crack of dawn and woke the two siblings sleeping in the room with him, I would feel the tears spilling over.
This was not working. We needed out. And finally, after six endless months of searching, we hit gold.
A close friend of my father-in-law was selling a house he had lived in years earlier.
It was in the perfect location, more perfect than we could have thought possible.
The house was in decent condition, needing minimal work to make it livable.
It was a beautiful property and had large, spacious rooms.
The price was within our budget, and best of all it even had a tenant apartment.
We went to look at it. Immediately, we started visualizing how we could expand the kitchen, convert the two bedrooms into a large playroom, and turn the downstairs into a home office or private suite.
We could already envision pictures of children adorning the buffet, our dining room furniture in the large room with even larger windows.
We went outside to explore the exterior, and a friendly neighbor approached and introduced herself. She exclaimed how amazing the neighborhood was, that it was the type of block where they sat outside every day for hours, said Tehillim together every Friday night, and borrowed things from each other all the time. There was even a shul on the block.
Within two minutes of talking to her, we were fast friends and I saved her number to my contacts.
That clinched it. Great location, neighborhood, and price - what more could we ask for?
We immediately called the seller with an offer. He said that someone else had given in an offer two days previously, but he assured us that the house would be ours.
We couldn’t believe our good fortune. A day later he called back to say that our offer was accepted.
Heart suffused with joy and appreciation, I prepared a spice rub for spare ribs and peeled potatoes and peppers for my husband’s favorite side dish. I even set the table with my nice china.
My four-year old noticed my extensive preparations and piped up, “Is Totty making a siyum?”
I laughed. “No, tzadik, but we’re making a nice supper to thank Hashem for helping us find a huge new house with a back porch for you to play and really nice neighbors.”
His eyes opened wide. “Are we really going to move?” He repeated.
I tickled him on his nose and he giggled. “Yes, B’ezras Hashem.”
“Tomorrow?”
“It’s still going to take a few weeks or months,” I explained. “But then we’re going to have a much nicer, bigger house. It’s even going to have a playroom!”
“And two bathrooms and a room just for me and Chany so we shouldn’t wake up from Shimmy’s crying and a bookshelf for all our books?” He asked breathlessly.
I confirmed with a nod, and he jumped for joy and ran off to spread the news.
The next day, we set a date to sign the contract.
I looked around my two-bedroom apartment but my mind saw the new house with its five large rooms.
This was really happening. We were done with this apartment, on to bigger and better. And then one day, my husband happened to mention to his father that someone else had given in an offer before us.
His father‘s response was grave: he said there
PIRKEI AVOS 4, 1
"Who is mighty? He who subdues his inclination, as it is stated, 'He who is slow to anger is better than the mighty, and he who rules his spirit than he who captures a city.'"
Our house was closing in on us.
We were still in the 2-bedroom rental we had been in since our marriage. At the time, I remember admiring the spacious kitchen, the beautiful bedroom with our newly arrived furniture, and the cozy dining room.
Now, the kitchen didn’t feel as spacious anymore with two high chairs, a baby swing, and a playmat. Our bedroom was crowded with a crib and stroller in addition to the furniture, and our cozy dining room was overrun by toys.
The baby slept in the master room, and the 3 other little ones slept in the second bedroom, between a high riser and crib. But there was no closet space
for all their things, no storage space for things they outgrew, and no space for all their toys.
It was time for a move.
My husband contacted brokers and we discussed exactly what we needed.
We needed something in decent condition, so we wouldn’t have to invest much upfront. Preferably with a tenant apartment, so we would have the income in the beginning. And of course, a house that was within reasonable walking distance of our parents and shul. Houses became the new backdrop to supper and bedtime.
A beautiful house came up, for a decent price, but it was an hour's walk from our parents and siblings.
We wanted to be able to walk over to our parents for the suedos, or spend shalash suedos with siblings. And our shul was too far to even think about walking over on Yom Tov.
Another house was listed, a charming, large house much closer to home, and we dared hope this was itbut then we heard the price, and it stopped us in our tracks.
