Her students were all giggling.

Pessy, wearing her carefully chosen first day of school blazer, felt her hands grow clammy as she stood by her 4th grade classroom door and stared her laughing students down. What did they find so funny?

She looked every girl in the eye while she tried not to lose her composure. Then she motioned them to take their seats, as she had practiced so many times. Somehow, it just made them laugh harder. The way to her teacher’s desk felt like an eternity, stretching before her like a long, long road. Each step felt like moving her foot through thick jelly. Finally, she was behind the desk, but even as she cleared her throat to begin her lesson, she knew she wouldn’t be able to get a single word out.

“Good afternoon, Grade 4,” she tried to say, but her vocal cords wouldn’t obey her. And her students were still smirking at each other, some of them laughing audibly…

Pessy woke up coated in sweat, eyes flying open frantically. The familiar scent of the pink potpourri diffuser on her desk slowly accustomed her to the reality, and she sighed in deep relief as her mind acknowledged the peaceful nighttime stillness all around her. It was just a dream.

Whoa, she was really nervous about her first day of teaching! Pessy laughed at the dream her overactive nerves had conjured up.

Of course, she was having nightmares the night before her very first day of teaching… her eyes drifted to the stack of papers that held her notes for her prized first-day-ofschool lesson, neatly laid in a folder on the white wooden surface of her desk.

Tiptoeing out of bed and letting her toes find her slides, she grabbed her notes and headed downstairs to calm down. As she went, she pictured the beautiful classroom decorations she’d worked so hard on, waiting patiently on the walls of her quiet classroom. Those decorations had respectfully listened to her complete first day of school rendition earlier today, from the first Good Afternoon until her explanation of the end of day procedure.

She made herself a raspberry tea, for the warmth of it, and flipped open her folder.

Pessy was going to ace this teaching thing. Her students were going to love her, she was sure of it. The realistic nightmare’s fear faded and her optimism returned, as she immersed herself in the familiar lesson notes once again.

But she couldn’t deny the definite clenching of her stomach.

She would be walking into the classroom in just under 8 hours, setting the tone for the entire year ahead of her. What would the unfolding year hold in store for her?

Her eyes adjusted to the darkness and she could make out a neatly swept floor and stacked dishes in the dishrack. She felt her heart surge with gratitude for Chayala, the daughter who picked up all the pieces the scatterbrained principal who was her mother left behind.

What present would she need to buy Chayala once this whole crazy back-to-school season was finally over? And how many more times would Chayala have to take care of her little siblings while the school consumed her mother’s days and nights?

Mrs. Gordon dropped into the recliner in the living room and closed her eyes. All day in school, an adrenaline rush had kept her going, putting out one fire after another as she dealt with yet another urgent issue. Teachers, the administrator, mothers, secretaries, everyone turned to her as the linchpin that held the school together. While everyone else was gearing up for a climactic first day of school tomorrow, Mrs. Gordon was winding down from her frenzied preparations for that very day.

She cranked herself up from the recliner and went to get a drink. On the way, she found the note that Chayala had left for her on the counter.

Hi Mommy,

The kids were crazy and the house was flying, but everyone had supper and I cleaned up as much as I could. How come your phone wasn’t working? I called a million times before I went to sleep.

Also, I ate up all the nosh while I was waiting for you to come home. I’m not sure my uniform is going to fit me tomorrow, so I might need new ones.

Also, someone Mrs. Brody called and she really wanted to call you. I couldn’t reach you, so I stopped picking up for her eventually. I think she called fifteen times. Also, she left you a message.

“I’m home!” Mrs. Gordon called quietly into the one am silence. She peeked down the

Mrs. Gordon smiled affectionately at the tissue that held her daughter’s scrawl. Chayala’s upbeat nature was a lifesaver in the face of things like her mother’s phone dying and handling all the kids on her own. But reading the message more closely made a frown creep into her eyebrows. What could Mrs. Brody have wanted?

She grabbed the cordless phone and a drink and settled back into the recliner to listen to her messages. Fifteen new messages. Maybe Chayala hadn’t been exaggerating the amount of times Mrs. Brody had called.

Hi Mrs. Gordon, Mrs. Brody’s tinny voice sounded over the phone’s answering machine, my daughter’s therapist told me that it’s extremely important for her to speak to the teacher before the school year starts. It’s kind of urgent. She needs to know how to deal with everything. Can you please call me back? My number is 929 889Beep. The message was cut off.

“Now she decides that her daughter’s therapist must be in contact with the teacher before the school year starts?” Mrs. Gordon asked aloud rhetorically, with a mixture of resignation and despair. “Now, when it’s the night before school is supposed to start?”

Apparently, even Mrs. Gordon, dedicated principal of Bais Golda, had her limits. This kind of issue was not something she could handle at one o’clock in the morning. Especially when it came from a parent like Mrs. Brody.

Fun, fun, fun. Yet another issue to deal with. She took a swig from her water bottle before pressing play to hear the next message.

“Mrs. Gordon? It’s Mr. Seidman. I need to talk to you about the new books the secretary ordered. She said tomorrow is the last day to cancel the order. Call me first thing in the morning to discuss.”

What could possibly have been wrong with the readers she’d asked Mrs. Klein to order for the second grade? It was the same kind of readers they ordered every year. Why did Mr. Seidman, the administrator, sound so

upset?

Dropping the cordless into her lap, she took another long drink. She should have known that having her phone die would mean coming home to a boatload of urgent messages on her home phone. And she, still naïve after six years as principal, had been enjoying the peace and quiet of being unreachable for the last few hours.

She was about to listen to the next message, likely to be as urgent as the last two, requiring her immediate attention. But a sudden cry from the bedroom stopped her finger.

Heading into the bedroom with quick footsteps, she went straight to her baby’s crib. She lifted him out gently, cuddling him against her. Thirteen months old was so little to be away from Mommy all day, although he was usually a trooper. His wails intensified at first, as if he wasn’t quite sure this was the Mommy he’d been looking for.

All thoughts of the urgent matters that needed her attention faded as she looked at her little Shayale, eyes still closed as he snuggled against her, sobs turning into whimpers.

Parents’ requests, the administrator’s anger, and even the whole new school year that was lying ahead of her obscured in mystery, everything would have to wait. There was something more important right now.

Shayale turned from side to side, trying to find a comfortable position and fall back asleep. She sat very still as she held him, and eventually, his breathing slowed to even once again.

As she sat there holding him, all the many things she still had to take care of threatened to avalanche into her mind. She was so, so tired.

Her now-peacefully sleeping bundle grew heavy in her arms as her eyelids drooped.

Could she really handle another full year of making sure that the parents were happy, and the administrators were satisfied?

Could she do another ten months without the students eating their teachers alive and without any teachers permanently traumatizing any of her students? Could she manage the expectations of everyone

around her without cracking under the pressure for once and for all?

A sense of jealousy for her little baby’s innocent sleeping stirred in her as she watched him through half-closed eyes.

The answer to all those questions would have to be yes, if Bnos Golda was to have another wonderful year of growth. Only Mrs. Gordon had no idea how it would be possible. •••

“Q2 is over, Q3 is coming. What progress have we made?”

The conference room at Techx2 was vast, with the huge table in the middle seeming diminutive in its large parameters.

When Josh Lugoff, the CEO, strode to the front of the room and threw out his question, every one of his employees knew they could be expected to come up with an answer.

Josh’s gaze swept around the room, taking in all his computer engineers, data scientists, and application specialists. He finally settled on Lenny DiVale, whose official job description was as their systems integrator.

“Lenny, what’s your report?”

“I think we’ve seen the most progress in the area of UX, making our new AI bank tools extremely user-friendly," Lenny replied smoothly. “Our AI banking software is easily the best in the market now in 4 ways.”

“And those four ways are?”

“Number one is capability. It does more work than a number of software programs plus employees combined would normally do. Number two is accuracy, according to my tests. Number three is ease of use, our most recent refinement. And number 4 is its consistently high scores in real-life use. We’ve already had OneUp Bank using it as a repeat tool, and in nearly 99% of cases, using our software would have meant a smarter decision.”

Every single employee listened carefully as Lenny made his case.

Josh tapped impatiently on the conference table throughout Lenny’s analysis, clearly familiar with most of the information already.

“So, in your opinion, Lenny, we should be marketing the software already?”

His response was an unequivocal, “Yes.”

“What about the fact that there are constant improvements being made to the AI learning model, and the fact that it hasn’t been as thoroughly debugged as initially recommended?”

Lenny shrugged. “I don’t know if it’s possible to completely debug the software. And there’s no need for endless improvements when we’ve got something this good.”

“We can always give out another model later on, for a higher cost,” Ted, the CFO, pointed out.

Josh nodded.

“There’s bigger and better coming up,” strategist Brad threw out casually from his place at the table. Josh nodded again.

“Aren’t there problems with the data origins, though?” Josh turned to the head of the data science team, Michael Griffiths. Michael nodded reluctantly.

“Yes, there are problems. Not all the data was originally ours, and we may not have rights over all of it.”

Josh looked over at Dale McGee, their inhouse lawyer. “Is that likely to backfire?” he asked Dale.

Dale shook his head. “There aren’t any laws that have been passed which are specific enough to include this kind of data usage,” he said with certainty. “The lack of legislation works in our favor here.”

More tapping on the conference table, then Josh straightened up.

“That’s it, then,” he announced with less fanfare than his team would have expected.

“We’re ready to sell the software. Every bank out there will be using Finance2 by the end of the fiscal year, or face the possibility of being completely left behind by the AI banks.”

It was a grand statement, but in this hightech company’s meeting room, it made perfect sense. Their original goal in creating the software had been just that.

All that was left was to reach it. •

ACAI BOWL

Acai bowls are the perfect healthier back to school or work, breakfast, lunch, or snack to fuel your day!

Ingredients:

1 acai packet

½ frozen banana

½ cup frozen strawberries

½ cup frozen blueberries

¾ cup milk

1 Tbsp honey

Blend everything together until smooth. Use your imagination to top your acai bowl.

To make in advance, freeze in serving size portions in airtight containers. When ready to eat, let the acai partially thaw, stir until creamy. Add topping fresh.

Note: Never store acai in the refrigerator, it will end up melting and become soupy.

OVERNIGHT OATS

This is a basic recipe to start your overnight oats journey. Feel free to switch around the flavors and toppings to your liking.

Ingredients:

½ cup oats

¾ cup milk

2 Tbsp chia seed

1 Tbsp honey

¼ tsp vanilla extract

Mix everything together in a jar. Refrigerate overnight. Top with fresh fruit.

Make a few separate jars at the beginning of the week, to have a delicious filling breakfast with no effort.

OATMEAL BREAKFAST COOKIES

These breakfast cookies are amazing to your morning coffee.

Ingredients:

1 ½ cups white whole wheat flour

2 ½ cups quick oats

1 tsp baking soda

1 tsp salt

½ cup oil

¾ cup honey

1 cup applesauce

2 eggs

1 tsp vanilla extract

½ cup chocolate chips or craisins

1. Preheat the oven to 350°. Line 2 cookie sheets with parchment paper.

2. Mix all ingredients in a bowl.

3. Form cookies using approximately 2 tablespoons of batter per cookie.

4. Bake for 20 minutes.

Store these cookies per 2 in the freezer and you have the perfect breakfast to grab on the way out the door.

ATime to debunk some myths! Popcorn is, in fact, a surprisingly healthy whole grain snack. Unlike other highly processed snacks, popcorn is a simple and natural food. It's a good source of fiber, which aids digestion and helps maintain a healthy gut. Additionally, it contains essential minerals like magnesium, phosphorus, zinc, and manganese. Popcorn is also low in calories, especially when air-popped. Three cups of plain, airpopped popcorn contain around 90-100 calories, making it a sensible option for those watching their caloric intake. Now for your concern; some people worry that because popcorn is made from corn, it might be unhealthy. However, it's essential to distinguish between the various types of corn. The corn used to make popcorn is different from the sweet corn we eat on the cob or find in canned or frozen form. Popcorn kernels have a hard outer shell and a starchy interior. When heated, the moisture inside the kernel turns into steam, creating pressure until it eventually explodes and "pops." The end result is a fluffy, delicious snack

with its unique taste and texture. Also, the high fiber content in popcorn can help keep you feeling full and satisfied, reducing the urge to snack on less healthy options throughout the day. Of course, moderation is key, as excessive consumption of any food can hinder weight loss efforts. Personally, I allow popcorn as an afternoon snack for all my clients.

Popcorn can indeed be a weight lossfriendly snack when prepared sensibly. Air-popped popcorn is the healthiest option, as it doesn't involve any added fats or oils. Avoiding excessive butter, oil, or sugary toppings keeps the calorie count low and preserves its nutritional value. (The popcorn we find in the stores today covered in chocolate and candy, is obviously not the popcorn I am targeting here.)

As with any food group, moderation is key. A bag of popcorn on a given day should not pose a problem from a health perspective or from a weight loss perspective.

STRATEGIES FOR OPTIMUM SUCCESS

RAISING READERS

Q: My husband and I are both big believers in reading. We always encourage our children to read –and had no problem getting our two older daughters to become interested in reading. But, now, as my son is getting older and entering third grade (a time when my daughters’ love for reading blossomed), he seems completely disinterested. How can I get him to read on his own?

A: It might make you feel good to know that the discrepancy between boys and girls in terms of reading is well documented in educational journals. Whole books have been devoted to studying why boys lag behind girls in terms of their reading skills and here are some of the reasons that scientists and educators have compiled:

• Biology. Girls develop fine motor skill proficiency at an earlier age than boys. Because reading and writing are linked, girls will often be better readers because they are better writers. As they grow older, these early differences continue to grow.

• Vocabulary. A language professor from New Zealand

explains, girls talk more than boys, speaking 30% more words over a day than boys. And they talk more from an early age — to toys and dolls and playing school — so it's natural they are more adept with language.” This adeptness translates to a greater comfort with the written word as well.

• Subject matter. Because the subject matter is generally chosen by women (teachers, mothers, or librarians), the subject matter tends to be tailored towards female interests. Without something familiar or exciting to hold on to, they boys will lose interest.

• Genre. Girls understand narrative prose with ease, while boys are more comfortable with non-fiction. However, non-fiction is not often used in schools for reading instruction. This practice tends to skew the instruction towards the way girls learn.

One or more of these issues could be affecting your son’s interest in reading – but there is plenty you can do to help him overcome these obstacles. First, encourage him to choose

his own books. Give him multiple options that appeal to his hobbies and interests.

Second, talk to your husband about providing your son with a positive male role model for reading. You mentioned that both you and your husband are believers in reading. Does your husband read in front of your son? Do they read together? Seeing someone male who he admires will help your son understand that reading is a valued activity for all members of the family.

Lastly, and perhaps most importantly, remember that reading is reading – regardless of whether it is a comic book, newspaper article, or a novel. If your son is sitting quickly with his eyes moving across a page, then he is reading and should be applauded. Help your son come up with a reading log so that he can truly understand how much he reads each day. You can even begin with the small things – like the cereal box and road signs. Eventually, he will branch out to longer books and articles.

Martin begins doing things under a blanket in his room, which attracts the attention and worry of Rob, the nurse.

During the protest march in Charleston, Mike fills Michoel in on how the Skulholts recruit new patients to their place. He points out Ernie, one of the main recruiters, to Michoel. As soon as Michoel sees Ernie, he feels an intense hatred toward him. Memories of pain and a head injury engulf him, and he collapses onto the ground.

CHAPTER SEVENTY EIGHT

Rob left the room and quiet reigned once again, but just for one minute. Martin barely waited till the door was closed before he hurried over to the closet, the blanket hanging loosely over his left shoulder. He hoped there was no surveillance camera in the closet, and if there was one behind it, then his glorious cape would hide whatever he was doing. Here was his suitcase, and the hidden compartment. And here was the phone and the charger. Excellent.

He closed the doors of the closet and leapfrogged impressively back to the middle of the room, sitting hunched over under his blanket, the phone in his right hand. He took a deep breath. It was not likely that someone would come into the room a second time in the next few minutes. Now was his chance to try.

He pressed and held the number 2, the speed dial for Shimon Weisskopf.

“Hello?” Shimon answered in seconds, as if he had

been sitting and waiting for this call since they’d parted at the airport.

“Hello, Shimon?”

“Yes?” He sounded cautious.

“It’s me, Yosef Schorr.”

“Good, I’m happy you managed to call. I was worried about you.”

“It took me some time to get settled here.” He kept his second ear peeled for any noise from the door.

“I realized that’s what happened. Are you really in that place in South Carolina?”

“Yes. Next to Charleston.”

“So it really is them… Good to know. I spoke to your ‘mother’; she told me you’d let her know that you arrived, but I didn’t know how much of the truth you could tell her. Have you met our relative yet?” Shimon remained cautious.

“Yes.”

“How is he?”

“Fine…” Martin hesitated a bit. “He speaks slowly, and it looks like he really did have a stroke or some other head injury.”

“Besides that, how does he communicate?”

“Oh, his mind is great. He seems to grasp things very quickly.”

“Good, that’s what I wanted to hear.” Shimon was quiet. “What else?” he asked, after a moment.

“Look.” Completely wrapped in the blanket, Martin now crawled toward the door and leaned on it. If someone tried to open it, he should have some warning. “The

“Story? What, that you’re…not…”

“That I’m not,” Martin summarized flatly. “And he is demanding to leave with us; otherwise he’ll talk to the management and tell them the truth about me.”

“Sounds awful.”

“He seems trustworthy,” Martin whispered.

“Seems trustworthy? Who is it? What’s his name?”

“Kopshitz. Mike Kopshitz.”

“And why does he need you? What is he thinking? That only you, the angel of rescue, can get him out from behind those walls?”

“He realizes that if I came from the outside, I apparently have a plan, because from inside, it really is very hard to try an escape.”

“Who is he, and what is he?”

“He’s a Jewish kid from California, from a wealthy, traditional family. He came here on his own; at first, he was an ardent fan of the place, until they disappointed him. The interesting thing is that they trust him fully, and he’s one of the few people here who have his own phone.”

“So if he has his own phone, why can’t he call for help by himself?”

“It’s complicated. He says the few times that someone tried to tell the world that this is actually a prison of sorts, or a cult, or whatever you want to call it— the management was able to artfully get out of any accountability. And the poor informer didn’t get out of it so fast.”

Shimon processed the dismal information. “So, it’s not simple—that’s what you’re saying.”

“Right.”

“But if I come with agents, we’ll have more of a chance.”

“For sure. The question is the timing.” He listened for a moment. Was someone approaching the door? Yes, and with giant steps. Had they picked up every word of the conversation? But how?

“Maybe the middle of the night is better,” Shimon said thoughtfully. “But first I need to get to South Carolina; I can’t drag anyone with me from New York if it’s not their area of jurisdiction…Martin?”

Loud knocking and muffled cries had suddenly cut off the conversation, and Shimon tensed up. “Martin?” he asked over and over, quietly, and then fell silent, waiting anxiously for the moment that a strange voice would pick up the phone and demand to know who he was.

But no voice demanded to know his identity. From afar, he heard fragments of words: “Perl…road…scream… hospital…”

“What?!” he heard Martin’s panicked voice gasp, and then the call was cut off.

Shimon didn’t dare call the number back. Instead, he called his friend Mendy, who also happened to be his travel agent, and booked a ticket that evening to South Carolina. Then he looked up inexpensive hotels in Charleston. ***

He’d never been a fool, just a bit impatient. He’d always tried to find shortcuts, to pull strings, and that was why he’d urged Hinda to go out into the world again soon after the passing of her husband. Hashem should forgive him for pushing her like that. He hoped that Hinda had already forgiven him; she certainly could not deny the improvement in her personality afterward. Maybe she’d eventually thank him for the opportunity he’d given her. But for his part, he knew, it had not been okay to come down so harshly on a poor widow. What could he do if he hated seeing people so totally absorbed in themselves? Hinda had been that type since she was small. That’s the way she was: an only child, spoiled, everything revolving around her. If she stayed like that even after the tragedy, he had decided, it could all become much worse. Now she was blossoming. Not that he gave himself credit for the fact that she’d remarried, but it was clear to him that without the job that he’d forcibly arranged for her years ago, she would have forever remained in the same hole with herself, like a worm in the veins of lettuce.

With her kids, though, he did try to speak patiently. Hey, where was Yosef? He tried to be especially patient and tolerant with Yosef.

On that trip, he’d also been a bit impatient. Potash from New York had given him a nice sum, and he’d hoped that if he’d mention this ahead of time to Reb Aharon Kluft from Savannah, Georgia, the gvir would be impressed enough to match his brother-in-law’s donation. No, wait, it was the opposite: He’d gotten a donation from Kluft, and he was on the way to fly to New York for a visit with

Potash.

He’d never spoken on his phone in public about such things, but this time it had happened, because Potash was about to go on an important trip, and Michoel had needed to give him the information as soon as possible. And Ernie had been sitting right next to him. And he’d overheard the entire conversation.

What bus accident? There was no bus and no accident. Or rather, perhaps there was a bus—that’s how he’d gotten around in the city—but an accident? Absolutely not.

He’d traveled to the airport. Which one? It didn’t matter right now. It was not a very big airport—that much he remembered—but even before he’d entered, someone had come over to ask him for the time. It was the tall blond guy who had gotten off the bus after him. Blond.

Tall.

“No, it hurts!!” Michoel rubbed his forehead and his temples. “Enough! I can’t…no, no, no, leave me alone! Who is there, Yosef? Mike?”

“It’s me, Mike,” a soft voice said next to him. Then another voice interjected, “I’m also here, Mr. Perl. It’s me, Dr. Jerry. Is everything alright?”

He could not open his eyes; the light bothered him, and the metal beating inside his head—was that just a stick or was it a weapon? Whatever it was, it really hurt. Michoel breathed heavily and tried to sit up. He had to win this battle. If he stayed here, Ernie might come and give him a blow again. Mike would take care of him, perhaps. No, who was Mike anyway? Maybe Yosef would. Not that it was Yosef, but he had come to help him.

“Please, Mr. Perl, don’t sit up yet,” another voice, an unfamiliar one, said. “You came here to Central Hospital because you collapsed. It’s better for you to rest as much as you can, so that it shouldn’t happen again. Dr. Skulholt, which medications does he usually take?”

The psychiatrist said something in a low voice. Michoel became frightened. Who knew what they would inject into his veins now? He mustn’t let that happen! If he would become too groggy, he might blurt out something about the identity of his guest from Israel!

“I don’t want anything,” he said, in as strong a voice as he could muster. Despite the terrible weakness that was overpowering him in waves, he sat up. “I want to

let my body recover itself; I don’t want any sedatives or anything.”

The man facing him was short and wore blue scrubs. He looked at Michoel with eyes that seemed to be half smiling. Something about him evoked trust. “Whatever you want,” he replied amiably. “I like strong people—you recover quickly. But don’t you want to help out your body?”

“Nature is the best healer…” Michoel murmured, making every effort to maintain his equilibrium. Out of the corner of his eye, he could see Mike standing near the wall, looking at him with big eyes. “How does the rest go? Mike, can you help me?” He looked down. Oy, he was still wearing that ugly yellow shirt.

“Am I in the emergency room?” he asked quietly. “When am I getting released?” Maybe this was all a show by Dr. Jerry and his friends. Maybe he wasn’t in any hospital, and they just wanted to drug him up again, like they’d done then, after the blow he’d sustained from that horrible Ernie. Who knew how long he had been lying there for? What did they want from him? The money?

“You’re in the emergency room,” the pleasant man in blue scrubs said. “My name is Dr. Rueben Clark, and I’m in charge of your care right now. In general, you seem to be okay. Based on how you do over the next few hours, we’ll see when you can be released. Dr. Skulholt, can I offer you something to drink?”

“No, thanks,” the psychiatrist replied. There was a thin crease in his forehead.

“The water is very clear here, you know,” Dr. Clark said, and Michoel wondered if there was thinly veiled cynicism in his words. He apparently was not the only one to notice it, because Dr. Skulholt repeated himself, as the crease in his forehead grew deeper, making him look dour. “Thanks, but no.”

Michoel’s head was pounding, but he did not let it take control over him. He had to keep his mind clear. “Mike, can you please raise the head of the bed?” he weakly asked the pale young man standing next to the IV pole. Mike glanced at the psychiatrist and then approached the bed. Within a moment, Michoel was sitting up straight, leaning back on a pillow.

“I’m fine,” he said, ignoring his wildly racing heart. “Absolutely fine. Half a day of rest, and I’ll be back to myself.”

Boyd Haley, Ph.D., is a chemist specializing in the development of chemicals to chelate toxic metals, both from the environment and the human body. I had the opportunity to interview Haley (above) at the 2018 Academy of Comprehensive Integrative Medicine (ACIM) conference in Orlando.

Haley’s Ph.D. is in chemistry and biochemistry. He conducted research funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) for 25 years at the University of Wyoming and at the University of Kentucky. Early in his career, he developed a biochemical detection system called nucleotide photoaffinity labeling and has published studies on its usage. Haley explains:

"I took ATP and made it radioactive, which isn't a big feat. But then I attached to that a molecule that would explode when it hit a photon of light. When it exploded, it made a very reactive intermediate that had a half-life of something like 10-12 or 1013 seconds.

If ATP was bound to a protein, such as sodium potassium ATP [and] … you hit it with light, it would form a covalent bond at the binding site of ATP on the enzyme it was interacting with

…

You could use these kinds of probes to see the difference between the ATP, guanosine diphosphate (GDP), cyclic adenosine monophosphate (AMP) and nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH) — all these binding proteins, to see how the energetics of the cell was changing."

Haley's Alzheimer's Research

He later took a position with the Alzheimer's Center, a research center for Alzheimer's disease, where he collaborated with a former graduate student of his. The NIH funded their research for five years, which used Haley's technology to assess the differences of ATP, GDP and cyclic AMP binding proteins in normal brains versus those with Alzheimer's disease.

"There were dramatic differences," he says. For example, the enzyme creatine kinase, which is a fundamental enzyme, is 98% inhibited in Alzheimer's patients. They also discovered that tubulin — a major brain protein that holds an axon in its extended form and controls the growth direction of axons and dendrites — is inhibited by more than 80%.

In 1989, he published the paper "Aberrant Guanosine TriphosphateBeta-Tubulin interaction in Alzheimer's disease" in the Annals of Neurology, stating that "These results support the hypothesis that microtubule formation is abnormal in brains affected by Alzheimer's disease."

Haley goes on to recount the story of how he got into trouble with the NIH when he decided to investigate the influence of heavy metals on Alzheimer's susceptibility. A popular theory at the time was that Alzheimer's was caused by aluminum toxicity.

Using his technology, he was able to show that mercury was the only heavy metal capable of causing a normal brain to develop the same biochemical abnormalities — including abnormal tubulin — that you find in Alzheimer's disease.

Haley claims his research has since been replicated and confirmed. According to Haley, mercury causes the synaptic clefts to disappear and triggers the formation of neurofibrillary tangles, a major diagnostic hallmark of Alzheimer's, by causing abnormal hyperphosphorylation of tau.

He also published a paper in the respected medical journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences in 1992, detailing how the presence of glutamine synthetase in the cerebrospinal fluid may be a potential diagnostic biochemical marker of Alzheimer's disease, as well as more than 100 other studies, including a review of the relationship between mercury and autism, and research showing how the chelating agent he developed, emeramide (NBMI), protects against the cytotoxicity of mercury.

Biochemical Abnormalities Are Stimulated by Mercury

Beta-amyloid, which many associate with Alzheimer's, is not the actual cause of the disease. It's just a marker; it's a result of the disease. However, you can cause beta-amyloid buildup in the brain by treating neurons with mercury.

"What happens is mercury inhibits the expression of neprilysin, which is the main protease in the brain used to chew up beta-amyloid. Mercury doesn't affect beta-amyloid, but what it does do is it keeps the protease, the cleanup enzyme, from being expressed," he explains.

"If you give mercury at low levels, very low levels, to tissues that are going to live for a while, you'll see a buildup of beta-amyloid protein. The bottom line is: 6 out of 6 of the major biochemical abnormalities and pathological hallmarks of Alzheimer's disease can be stimulated by adding mercury.

I can tell you that was something that NIH, or the people who run NIH at the very top, did not want to hear … They said beta-amyloid is the cause of Alzheimer's disease. That made them heroes — they found the cause, so now they would find the cure …

But they don't want to look at it being something simple. There's no money to be made if you tell people, 'If you don't want to get Alzheimer's disease, don't expose yourself to mercury.'

Mercury is not the only cause. I would never say that, and I never did say that. I said, 'Mercury is the major exacerbating factor because we put dental amalgams in our mouth, and the major exposure, the source of mercury in our body, comes from them [sic] amalgams, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).'"

The Transformation of a Skeptic

It's interesting to note that Haley was in fact highly skeptical of the idea that dental amalgam released mercury before he started studying the matter. Like so many others, he assumed the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the American Dental Association would

never allow something truly toxic to be placed in people's mouths.

His scientific investigations eventually convinced him that amalgams are a major source of mercury exposure that can indeed exacerbate and trigger chronic illness — something he details in his 2014 paper, "Evidence Supporting a Link Between Dental Amalgams and Chronic Illness, Fatigue, Depression, Anxiety and Suicide."

Haley also recounts the twists and turns in his life that brought him to investigate the links between mercury toxicity and autism, and how vaccines can be a source of toxic mercury exposure. While thimerosal (mercurybased preservative) has been removed from many childhood vaccines, it's still used in some.

One tipoff that thimerosal was bad news came from a 1977 report from Toronto Hospital, where 10 of 13 infants died after having their umbilical region treated with merthiolate (thimerosal) to kill bacterial infection. Merthiolate is no longer in use, as it was discovered that these infants died from mercury toxicity.

This report revealed that thimerosal turned into ethyl mercury, which the infant body cannot eliminate. Despite that, a mere decade later, in 1988, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention decided thimerosal was an appropriate preservative for use in vaccines given to newborn babies and infants.

How Genetics Influence Your Mercury-Elimination Capacity

Haley completed his Alzheimer's research in 1988, just over 30 years ago, yet he's never been invited to an Alzheimer's conference to present his work. He has also published a book in which he proposed a mechanism for why having two copies of the ApoE2 gene renders you more or less immune to Alzheimer's.

The ApoE2 gene has two cysteine molecules on the surface, whereas ApoE4 — which is a major risk factor for Alzheimer's — has two tyrosine

molecules. These are amino acids on the structure. The cysteine amino acid on E2 binds effectively to mercury, whereas the tyrosine on E4 cannot bind to mercury at all.

As a result, having two copies of the ApoE4 gene places you at a significant disadvantage, as your brain cannot eliminate mercury naturally, whereas having two copies of ApoE2 is highly protective because your brain has the ability to clear out mercury.

It is also helpful to note that Dr. Dale Bredesen who wrote the book "The End of Alzheimer's," believes the ApoE4 allele may actually protect against Alzheimer's if you are metabolically flexible and regularly engage in intermittent or partial fasting.

Therapeutic Interventions to Address Mercury Toxicity

Alzheimer's disease is associated with oxidative stress. While mercury is not a redox metal, meaning it cannot create hydroxyl free radicals, mercury does displace iron and kaempferol, and when mercury displaces iron, it stops ATP production in that electron transport system.

By displacing iron from the iron sulfur centers mercury also blocks the cytochromes, as cytochromes require iron to work. "There are publications now showing that mercury exposure totally screws up the metabolism of iron in the body," Haley says.

The chelating compound he developed, called emeramide or NBMI, tightly binds to both mercury and free iron, which is also highly toxic. As such, emeramide can also be used in the treatment of hemochromatosis, a genetic disease that causes chronic iron overload.

Drawbacks of Most Popular Chelating Agents for Mercury

Haley also discusses the drawbacks of using dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA) or 2,3-dimercapto-1-propanesulfonic acid (DMPS) to detoxify mercury — the two most commonly used chemical chelators. According to Haley, they are

in fact not true chelators. Rather they form a "sandwich complex" where each molecule of mercury will have two DMSA molecules attached to it, opposed to just one.

A significant problem is their ability to translocate mercury from the blood and other organs and concentrating it in the kidneys, thereby causing renal failure. What's more, most of the mercury is not in your blood but rather in your cells, and neither DMPS nor DMSA can enter the cell, Haley claims. They only remove mercury from your blood.

"We initially developed the idea that I had to have a hydrophobic chelator that would get into the mitochondria, into the DNA … Mercury is hydrophobic. It's uncharged. It's a gas. It goes through the biomembrane. You have to have a chelator that does the same thing.

[The mercury] starts out as a gas. It goes in as Hg0 when you breathe mercury vapor [from your mercury dental fillings], and then it goes wherever it wants. [If you're eating fish], then it will be methyl mercury, but it's the same thing. Methyl mercury is also membrane-permeable.

It goes right through membranes because it binds. It's CH3Hg+. But if it's in the blood, there's a high level of chloride, and chloride binds that negative charge, so you end up with some of the Hg methyl mercury in the chloride form that can go right through the membrane because it's uncharged. That's the reason it gets through the brain so effectively," Haley says.

"[T]hen, in the brain or in any tissue, it gets converted into Hg2+ by an enzyme called catalase … and then it becomes very toxic; it's charged, and then it won't go out [of the cell]."

Haley's Decision to Develop a Better Chelator

Haley's decision to develop a better chelating agent for mercury was the result of failed attempts to alert health authorities to the very real dangers of thimerosal in vaccines.

"One night I was sitting at home. I have

a daughter who has a Ph.D. in molecular biology and toxicology. She called me up when she was writing her Ph.D. thesis. She said she found a website that mentioned me, and it wasn't very complimentary, to say the least.

She was kind of sad and teary. It made me angry that I just let those people go and say those things … I remember that night [in 2002] very vividly. I sat down with a glass of red wine … and said, 'How do I win? I can't out-PR these guys. You cannot out-PR the CDC' … That was the night I decided, 'I'm a chemist. I make things. I'm going to make a better chelator.' That's the way I went.

I wrote a grant. I got some funding to try and make the chelators that would enter the cells … If you're going to use a chelator, the first thing it has to be is nontoxic itself … It had to be hydrophobic [to] pass the blood-brain barrier and get in the cells …"

Haley recounts the history of how emeramide was developed — and describes the differences between it and DMPS and DMSA. Importantly, emeramide is nontoxic and binds very tightly to mercury. It's also a very potent antioxidant, with two glutathione "arms." (Glutathione is a powerful antioxidant produced in your body that is instrumental in detoxifying mercury and other toxins.)

Haley believes its antioxidant power comes from the glutathione components, which scavenge hydroxyl free radicals. Other testing showed each molecule of emeramide scavenges three hydroxyl free radicals. While it stops the toxicity, it does not repair any of the damage already done, which will need to be addressed through other means.

Why Was Haley's Initial Product Shut Down by the FDA?

Haley's first product, developed in 2006 and sold between 2008 and 2010 under the name Oxidative Stress Relief (OSR), was shut down by the FDA in 2010 after a complaint was filed. Haley explains the circumstances:

"When they shut me down, [my attorney, an FDA expert] told me, 'Dr. Haley, this is silly. The compound has in-structure, dicarboxyl benzoate, which is found in cranberries and cystamine, which is on the terminal end of coenzyme A. It's just cysteine without the carboxylic acid group. It's a natural product.

Two natural products [combined], just like slow-release niacin and n-acetyl cysteine … It can be [sold as] a natural product and a supplement if it contains any one of a natural product or any combination of two' …

That's what [the FDA rules] said. And then they changed that. We call it the Boyd Haley rule now. [The FDA] said, 'Not if you put [two natural products] together chemically' …"

In essence, Haley was targeted, and the FDA changed the rules to make their targeting stick. In the end, Haley chose not to fight the FDA in court. "I don't have that kind of money," he says. He closed down his business and no penalties or formal legal action were ever taken by the FDA. Haley's attorney told him he would need to develop a chemical chelator that doesn't exist naturally, and go through drug approval. This is the route he took with emeramide.

Emeramide Phase I Studies

Emeramide is the active pharmaceutical ingredient (API). The drug itself is called Irminix, and it is designated as an orphan drug for use as a mercury chelator in both the U.S. and the European Union, because neither the FDA nor the European Medicines Agency (EMA) have an official treatment for mercury toxicity.

"We got it started and we took it through all animal trials that they requested we do. You have to get incredibly high levels to have an effect on an animal — 100 times more than you would ever give a human being. We

use 4 to 5 milligrams (mg) per kilogram of body weight to treat a person for mercury toxicity.

We were giving these animals a minimum of 290 mg per kilogram of body weight to make them sick. Some animals don't get sick at all. Humans don't. I mean it's different. But there's nothing in there that's not reversible. It's something that you stop and it goes away. It's totally safe …

We did all that, and then we got permission to do a Phase I study in Sweden. That's when you give the drug in single doses for a period of time and go up higher and higher, and then you give multiple doses for a week …

We got up to 600 mg a day for two weeks in a Phase I study in humans with no adverse effects at all. I mean nothing happened; 600 mg is way more than you and I may ever need to take; 300 mg would be a good amount …

It peaks in your blood within two hours. About 60 to 80% … is absorbed … In test animals, we showed that it did the same thing and that it concentrates and it peaks in all tissues of the body at the same time. It gets in the brain. You get more of it in the kidney and the liver than you will get in the brain, but it does get into the brain. It crosses the blood-brain barrier and is effective in eliminating the iron out of the brain [as well] …"

Phase II Studies

Phase II studies were done on Ecuadorian gold miners, who use mercury during the refining and purification process, showing it decreased the mercury level in 10 of 11 miners. "Their urinary mercury levels dropped dramatically. Their blood levels went down also," Haley says.

"It was the people at the EMA advisory group who told us to go to South America or Africa or someplace where mining gold is thrust on those people.

The adverse effects [of the mercury exposure] — stomachaches, headaches and diarrhea — were [also] dramatically improved in those who took the drug.

Mercury does all of this and some other toxic side effects. The problem with mercury is there's no endpoint that you can point at that the FDA will say they'll accept as a proof that you've done it."

Once you've taken the emeramide, the mercury is excreted through your stool. And, contrary to most other chelators, you are not required to use a binder to get it safely out. Haley adds:

"We've looked at the cytochrome P450 (CYP) enzymes or the P450 system and the mercury NBMI complex, which when it binds to it, it never lets go … The toxicity is eliminated very quickly when you take NBMI … [In] about a month, most of it is out … [after] just one dose."
