CHAPTER 34
If her teachers knew where she was, what would they do? Mrs. Gordon wondered to herself as she walked up to the looming glass and brick office building.
She’d just finished talking to them about the upcoming PTA and how they should present themselves. Now here she was, presenting herself at a very different kind of meeting.
“Hi Shaina! Welcome to my home away from home!” Devorah was effusive as she greeted her sister-in-law at the entrance of the office’s floor.
Mrs. Gordon looked around, her expression wary.
“Don’t worry, you’ll see, it really is homey,” Devorah said as she guided Mrs. Gordon down the hallway, her heels clicking as they walked.
“Come to my office first, and I’ll tell my boss to buzz me when he’s ready, okay?”
Mrs. Gordon didn’t bother nodding to Devorah’s back. Today, she was going to let them run the show.
“So here’s where all the intake and secretarial stuff happens,” Devorah said as they walked past a transparent door, behind which a bevy of women were sitting at their desks.
Mrs. Gordon stole a look. Some employees were talking animatedly on the phone, some of them were schmoozing at their desks, some were sipping coffee. If she took this job, these women would be her coworkers. In a managerial role, she’d probably have a private office, like Devorah, but she would still be working closely with these women on a daily basis. That thought made her peek into the office again. Did she like what she was seeing?
She wasn’t sure.
Unconsciously, she pictured the cozy atmosphere in the teachers’ room at school, Bnos Golda. Her teachers gathered around the table and chairs, marking papers, debating hot topics, looking through their plan books.
She tried to picture trading that comfortable space for the sleek, corporate environment she was now in, with the formally dressed women who sat behind that door.
She felt a pang.
Her school truly was her home away from home, and she couldn’t imagine a scenario where it just went on without her.
SUNDAY, MAY 19 - TUESDAY, JUNE 25
Imagine the first day of school, she told herself. She wouldn’t be up all night preparing the school building and listening to a million urgent messages. Instead, she would sleep peacefully until the next morning, when she would calmly shepherd her kids out to their respective educational institutions.
She wouldn’t have to rely on Chayala’s help getting the kids out so that she could get to school early enough.
She wouldn’t have to prepare an opening speech, or look through first-day lesson plans. She wouldn’t have to reassure her teachers or deal with flustered administrators.
Instead, she would show up at this office, do the work she needed to do, speak to the people she needed to speak to, and go home at the end of the day, leaving it all behind in the office.
For some reason, her imaginings made her feel bleak.
She shook away the thoughts as Devorah led her into her private office.
“So, this is my secret space,” Devorah said with a wink. “I do all my trouble in here.”
Mrs. Gordon smiled. It definitely didn’t look like a troublemaking office, with its neat filing cabinet in the corner, three shelves with knickknacks on the wall, and a clean desktop surface holding a computer monitor and laptop.
Devorah sat down on her black office chair and said, “Hey, sit down, make yourself comfortable,” indicating another chair in the corner. Mrs. Gordon perched on it.
“Let me buzz my boss,” Devorah said, doing just that. When her boss picked up, she said, “Mr. Millman? Mrs. Gordon is here.”
Mrs. Gordon was happy to hear Devorah using titles. No first-name basis. That was good, one requirement checked.
Devorah hung up the phone. "He says he’s ready right now. Let’s head on over to his office.”
Mrs. Gordon nodded, trying to ignore the sudden tightness in her throat. There was no reason to be nervous! She wasn’t even sure if she wanted this job.
But somehow, she felt all the sensations that accompanied her every time Mr. Seidman, the administrator, called her to his office. Like she was the second-grade student being called to the principal.
Mr. Millman was an imposing man, tall and broad-shouldered even behind his desk. His beard was tinged with gray at the bottom, which somehow made him look even more commanding.
He smiled affably as they entered his office,
which allowed the atmosphere to become more comfortable. As he gestured to them to sit, both of them chose a chair at the side of the desk and sat down.
“Mrs. Messinger tells me you’re a whiz at getting everyone to be on the same page,” Mr. Millman said, directing his words to Mrs. Gordon.
“That’s what being a principal is all about,” Mrs. Gordon replied.
“She also tells me you have a fabulous system set up for coordinating providers in a school setting. I’d love to hear more about that.”
“Well, it’s more of an onboarding system. As soon as we hear about a new provider that’s going to be working with a student, we get in touch with them and send them this onboarding packet so that they have all the information they need.”
Mrs. Gordon was aware that semiconsciously, she was playing down her accomplishments. Passive-aggressive behavior? She didn’t have time to think about it, as Mr. Millman moved on.
“You realize, our services agency has grown in the last year, oh, I would say we might have nearly doubled the amount of cases we took in this year. Which means that by now, we’re working in nearly sixty in three different communities, in both schools and chadarim. It wouldn’t work quite the same way as an individual school’s system.”
“Of course, that’s clear.” Mrs. Gordon nodded, about to continue speaking when Mr. Millman beat her to it.
“What I see as the problem now, and what I hear from Mrs. Messinger, is that there really is no official system to coordinate with schools, an onboarding system, like you called it. We just don’t have anything like that in place. Even worse, I would say, is that there’s also no official address for concerns that a school might have about a provider. It’s all on the provider to figure it out, which means in case of an issue, we aren’t really equipped to resolve it.”
Mrs. Gordon nodded again, realizing that that was what he was looking for.
Mr. Millman looked in Devorah’s direction. “Did I describe it right, Mrs. Messinger?” Devorah smiled. “I think that describes it perfectly, Mr. Millman. It’s really a case of scaling really big, and now needing to add support.”
“Right. So now let me ask you, Mrs. Gordon, can you see yourself in that role? How would you deal with these issues I described?”
“Like I said, that really is exactly what I do as a principal, so this would be a natural role for me. Of course, setting things up would
“THERE WAS NO REASON TO BE NERVOUS! SHE WASN’T EVEN SURE IF SHE WANTED THIS JOB.”
take time, especially when there are 60 schools to think about, each with their own requirements, right? I think I would picture putting together something that’s like, you know, ‘the way we work,’ kind of thing, so that things are figured out on the agency’s end with a clear process. Then, you can always adjust if necessary for a specific school. But it isn’t, you know, figuring it out from scratch with each school.”
Both Devorah and Mr. Millman were nodding as she spoke, and their expressions grew more eager as she finished her little speech.
“Exactly, Mrs. Gordon, exactly.”

Harry was definitely a lawyer who cared about his clients. For all his bluntness in talking to Mrs. Kleinberg, he really did want to help her husband. It was after six o’clock and he was still in his office, preparing for the bail hearing that had been rescheduled. In just a few days they would be facing the judge, and for all the hours Harry had spent speaking with Mr. Sam Kleinberg, Shachne Kleinberg, and Mrs. Kleinberg, he still felt unsure about the case they would be making to the judge.
Although they were lucky that the excitement over the scandal had died down, there was still a huge hump to get over in terms of public opinion. Which judge would want to go against the masses with a decision to allow out of jail Public Enemy #1?
Unless Harry’s arguments were strong enough to convince the judge. Which was why he was still here, straining his brain to put his defense together.

“Yeah, my principal just finished telling us that we should make sure to be as positive as possible to all the mothers by PTA, don’t worry,” Pessy said into the phone as she walked through the door. “Like, feedback sandwich and all, I heard all about it already, Chavala.” She crooked a finger towards her mother in a way that could pass for a hello, and lifted a corner of her lips in a semi-smile. Then she headed towards the stairs, her carefully chosen teaching bag, now slightly worn from wear, swinging from her shoulder.
Mrs. Cooper resisted yet another urge to follow her daughter upstairs to continue listening into her
conversation. Why did she need to hear about her daughter’s life, anyway?
“So, it’s funny, but I really don’t have anything bad to say! Ever since I started going to Mrs. Shapiro and I figured out that this monster kid is actually just looking for attention, I totally feel like every kid in my class is just plain yum!”
Mrs. Cooper watched Pessy as she climbed the stairs and disappeared out of sight. Pessy’s voice faded as she went down the hallway towards her room/hideout, where she would deposit her teaching bag before coming back out for a snack.
“Nah, I’m not nervous to meet the mothers, I told you already. I don’t have to make them do anything. My students, on the other hand, I do have to control them, right? With mothers, I just have to smile sweetly and look charming.”
Pessy began heading towards the stairs again, having divested herself of her teaching equipment.
“Sure, you want to help me look charming?” she laughed to her friend. “You’re welcome to come over and have a say. I’m just a fourth grade teacher, though, remember?”
Pessy headed for the cabinet, about to reach for a pack of chocolate covered rice cakes. Her mother placed a bag of baby carrots in front of her nose instead, which made Pessy look up with a grin. Her mother winked.
“Nah, you don’t remember my wardrobe anymore, Chavala, when was the last time you saw me? We never get together anymore.”
Taking both the rice cakes and the baby carrots, Pessy headed back up the stairs.
Mrs. Cooper watched her go, a slight smile still playing on her lips. True, Pessy hardly got together with her friends, compared to how much time they’d spent together when they were in high school. But she made up for it with all the extra hours she spent on the phone.
As Mrs. Cooper spread out a tablecloth for supper, she thought about Pessy’s PTA that she claimed to be completely not nervous for. Pessy’s friends would cheer her on and give her any pep talks she needed. Pessy didn’t need her mother for this one. Or did she? •

Shmuli R.’s mother lives in a minefield.
“Anything can set off an explosion,” she said during her initial consultation with me. “Getting Shmuli to do his homework; telling him to wear a coat; not having what he wants for supper –if things don’t go his way, he explodes. He screams and kicks and totally loses control from one second to the next.”
“Living with Shmuli is so stressful. He says terrible things, slams doors, breaks things, and kicks anyone and anything near him whenever he gets angry. It’s awful. He once smashed an expensive mirror. Another time, he kicked holes in his bedroom door. He’s shattered plates, glasses, and vases. I don’t know how to deal with him,” she said.
She described the methods she had tried.
“I must have made dozens of sticker charts, but they don’t work. I tried being firm and putting him in time-out, but that doesn’t work, either. The last time I dragged him into time-out, he was so furious; he kicked me in the face,” she said, tears welling up in her eyes. “Most of the time, when he explodes, I either end up yelling back at him or just giving in and letting him do what he wants.”
Any parent of an explosive child can feel Mrs. R.’s pain and desperation. And any parent of any child can benefit from learning how to deal with explosiveness.
Dr. Ross Greene, Harvard Universtiy clinical psychologist, acclaimed author, and renowned expert on explosive children, says that the first thing parents and teachers have to recognize is that the children are really not at fault. They don’t want to be “bad” or manipulative or hurtful.
Dr. Greene’s premise is “Children do well if they can”. That goes against all the parents and teachers who have ever told a child, “You could control yourself if you wanted to”. Shmuli can’t control
his outbursts. In fact, explosive children are disabled – just like a child with a learning disability. That means that to help them, we have to enable them. We help them the same way we help the learning disabled child: by teaching them the crucial thinking skills they are lacking. These skills include delaying gratification, shifting from one mindset to another, and thinking through possible solutions.
This is an eye-opening concept for parents and teachers. Explosive children are usually considered spoiled, naughty, chutzpah’dik, seeking attention, or just not trying hard enough to behave. But the fact is that explosive children can’t control their behavior. They don’t know how.
The problem has broad social implications. Dr. Stuart Ablon, cofounder of the Center for Collaborative Problem Solving, and co-author of Treating Explosive Kids, says that there are twelve million misunderstood and mistreated kids in the US Juvenile Detention system. Many have been labeled oppositional/defiant, or a myriad of other diagnoses. A large percentage are explosive, and have been punished continually, from early childhood. The prisons try to motivate these children with a point system that rewards good behavior. This approach is doomed to failure - because the children can’t behave; if they don’t have the necessary skills. Instead, Dr. Ablon favors an approach that teaches delinquents the skills they are lacking.
Incidentally, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg recently announced that the Juvenile Justice Commission will be merged with the City's Administration for Children's Services. Child psychologists hope that the move will lead to a system that will actually teach troubled teens skills, rather than just award or punish them; and reduce the number of juvenile detainees who
become adult criminals. The important point for us is that the only way to deal with “behavior disabled” children is to teach them skills.
Why the usual methods don’t work
For decades, parents have tried positive reinforcement programs, like sticker charts and prizes. Such incentives don’t work well with explosive children who don’t have skills, because they don’t teach anything, and they set the child up for failure. The child cannot earn stickers, because he doesn’t know how.
“We were desperate to get Malky to stop behaving explosively, and we figured that if there was any incentive that would do the trick, it was an American Girl doll. She had been wanting one for so long,” says Mrs. Y. “Malky even drew the chart herself, but it was impossible for her to ‘behave’. She ended up ripping the chart to shreds, and kicking and screaming that she doesn’t want a stupid doll, anyway.”
Making a chart that rewards an explosive child for staying calm is like making a chart rewarding me for reading a Chinese newspaper. I can’t read Chinese – not for a sticker, not for a prize, not even for a trip to Israel! That doesn’t make me bad; it simply demonstrates that I don’t have the necessary knowledge and skills. The only solution that would make sense would be to hire a teacher to teach me Chinese.
By the same token, an explosive child can’t react calmly to frustration, because he doesn’t know how. The only solution is to teach him and give him the tools he needs to succeed. Often that means hiring a professional to teach him those skills.
Many people believe that explosive children should be punished. But punishment doesn’t work either. When a socially-mature child doesn’t want to do something, his parents can be
firm and insistent. For example, when a child doesn’t obey the first time they are asked to do something, a parent might say, “I want you to do this now. One, two, three”. By the count of three, the child generally scrambles to obey. An explosive child will not. Yet because they have no alternative, parents find themselves using this method, and enduring explosions each time.
In fact, explosive children are scolded, put into time out, spanked, punished, suspended from school, and medicated; much more often than other children. They seem to be defiant, and are often indeed labeled as having Oppositional / Defiant Disorder. Yet punishment is futile. It can even trigger an outburst, creating a vicious cycle of misbehavior, punishment, and much angst. Punishment doesn’t work, for the same reason that awards and charts don’t work: It doesn’t teach the child the skills he needs. And until he has the skills, he will not be able to avoid punishment.
Another approach many parents use is to give in. Shmuli’s mother lets him go to bed without brushing his teeth, because it isn’t worth the confrontation. She writes him excuse notes when he doesn’t do his homework, because she wants to avoid a scene. She lets him dictate where the family will go on vacation, even if his siblings object, because it is just easier than going against his will.
While this definitely makes things easier in the short term, it is not effective; first, because the child gets away with some pretty miserable behavior; and mostly, because, like with incentives and punishments, it doesn’t teach him any skills. It also shows the child that his parents are afraid of him – not a very good thing for him to think.
I must point out, however, the difference between giving in and wisely choosing battles. A parent who is teaching a child the skills he needs might give in without battling about issues that are not very important or dangerous. In this way, the parent concentrates his efforts on the important issues and on teaching skills. So if Yocheved is upset because she doesn’t want to eat chicken on a particular night, her mother might allow her to eat a peanut butter sandwich for supper; if she feels that it is not detrimental to her health. The mother is saving her teaching opportunities for more important issues.
Forecast – explosive storm coming When a child is in the midst of an explosion, there are techniques a parent can use to attempt to diffuse the situation. But it is hard to contain
a blasting bomb. It is much easier to solve problems proactively. Proactive teaching means working with a child during a quiet time.
In order to teach the child, parents need to recognize the likely triggers for an explosion. Inflexibility, difficulty with handling transitions, difficulty with adapting, and being unable to change a mindset can all be factors in explosiveness. Psychologist Dr. Douglas Riley adds that there are several hidden causes for explosiveness, including hidden anxiety and depression, sensitivities, and food allergies.
Explosive children want things to happen a certain way, and can’t adapt well to a different reality. So Moshe might explode when his favorite pajamas are in the hamper, or when someone disagrees with him about the rules of a game. Chany gets worked up every time her mother tells her to stop reading and get ready for bed. Many of these triggers are predictable, and parents can diffuse tensions by acting proactively to teach their children how to react to the inevitables in life.
Helping the Explosive Child
Parents play a very significant role in helping the explosive child, because their response to explosiveness makes all the difference. It is crucial for parents to think clearly and stay calm – not an easy thing to do when a child is in the midst of a full blown tantrum, complete with kicking, screaming, and breaking things. Parents should also avoid turning the episode into a power struggle.
So what should they do?
Collaborative Problem Solving
Collaborative Problem Solving means working with the child to solve problems. When an adult works together with the child, they can come to mutually satisfactory solutions and avoid much anger, aggravation, and explosion. Moshe’s parents might work with him to figure out a satisfactory way to voice his disappointment and move on when things don’t go his way. Chany’s parents might discuss a bedtime routine that is satisfactory to her and to them. The first step in helping the child is empathy –showing the child that you understand their problem, and acknowledging the difficulty involved.
Example #1: You really wanted to go to the park. Now it’s raining, and we can’t go. That is so disappointing!
Example #2: That was a real lively Monopoly game. It must be so frustrating to have to stop playing and get ready for bed.
Example #3: I see a fight brewing here. Yossi, you were playing with the Gameboy, and Hindy is badgering you to give it to her. It’s hard to be interrupted like that in the middle of a game. By stating the problem, you show the child that you truly understand the issue at play. By empathizing, you show that you understand and validate his feelings. The next step is collaborative problem solving. The key word is collaborative –the child must be involved in coming up with solutions.
Example #1: Do you have any idea of what we can do instead of going to the park?
Example #2: The problem is that it is already past 9:00, and your bedtime is 8:30. Maybe you can come up with an idea so that you won’t ruin the game, and still go to sleep on time.
Example #3: Hindy really wants the Gameboy now. Maybe you can work something out with her, so that you both get a fair turn to play.
Again, the key here is “collaborative”. The child has to be involved in the process. He or she has to be offered the chance to think of a solution. The problem solving session can actually be quite lengthy, as parent and child toss around solutions. It is important to keep listening to the child with empathy throughout the process. If the child has no solutions, the parent might offer one of her own, but make certain that it is satisfactory to the child.
Example #2: How about if we put the Monopoly board away without messing it up? Then you can finish the game tomorrow. Where can we put it so that it doesn’t get messed up?
I cannot stress enough that this is not easy - especially when your child is at the cusp of an explosion. Collaborative Problem Solving is much easier when there is no storm brewing. Suppose the child in Example #2 has an issue with bedtime every night. A proactive collaborative problem solving session would involve the child in creating a mutually-satisfactory bedtime routine, during the day, when bedtime is a safe few hours away.
Collaborative Problem Solving takes a major effort. Many parents need professional help in training their explosive children. But no matter how hard it is to help the child, the reward is worth the effort. First, because you will have warded off disaster; and most importantly, because you are teaching your child crucial skills that will change his life.

RECAP OF CHAPTER 22: Herr Wangel gives Leo Sherer a very limited amount of antibiotics for the many Jewish pneumonia patients. Naomi is worried that her husband Aryeh, who is very sick with pneumonia, won’t be one of the lucky ones to receive the medicine, since he is an able-bodied man.
Dena notices that the packaging used by the family’s spices factory doesn’t have a kashrus certification symbol on it. She is told that it’s because of the rampant anti-Semitism in Europe, but that the frum Jews know which food factories are kosher. Dena is still disturbed by this.
Dear Naomi,
Please warm up for Zeide the steamed squash that is in the pot in the cooler cabinet. Both of you should eat; don’t leave anything for me, because I’ll only be back tomorrow, and it will be spoiled by then. Prepare something hot to drink and air out the room very well.
You take care of mine, I’m taking care of yours—and Hashem will take care of all of us…
With love, Babbe
“Naomi set the table in her grandparents’ one-room apartment.
“I think it’s been years since we’ve eaten supper together,” she said to her grandfather, taking out the small aluminum forks from the cutlery box.
He mustered up a small smile. “So now there’s an opportunity.”
“I guess so,” she replied as she sat down, playing with the strap of Babbe’s apron that was hanging on the hook behind her, swaying in the strong evening wind. “Babbe asked me to air out the room. But when it gets too cold for you, Zeide, tell me and I’ll close the window.”
“Alright.”
Naomi let go of the apron strap. “Tell me, Zeide, has it ever happened before that Babbe worked in the infirmary through the night? Because I don’t remember such a thing. Is this the first time?”
“It’s true, it’s hardly ever happened. When we were younger, there was no infirmary. People who needed a doctor called Dr. Baruch Grodotzky, zichrono l’vrachah, and he came to their houses or they came to his house. He only opened the infirmary after about ten years. His wife was the nurse there. For years, Wangel brought him all kinds of medical books, and that’s how he learned. He also taught the medical knowledge to his daughter, Katzburg.”
“And in recent years?”
“If there is no one seriously ill or something urgent, the infirmary is closed at night. And when it is open, they manage with the two young nurses; they don’t specifically need Babbe to be there.”
Naomi stood up and opened the cooler cabinet, taking out the pot of squash. “How many people are hospitalized there now, Zeide?”
“This afternoon there were seven with pneumonia and two more with severe flu.”
“And the other flu patients?”
“They’re at home.”
“You…” Naomi took a deep breath and put the portion of squash
on her grandfather’s plate. “Did Babbe tell you what’s really going on with Aryeh, Zeide?”
“Yes. He’s not getting antibiotics for now, but they did give him an intravenous for fluids and other things that can help, and he is getting a bit better.”
“Babbe refused to tell me how much fever he has.”
“So then I also refuse. But Naomi’le, baruch Hashem the infirmary is able to give an IV, for example. That’s thanks to Dr. Grodotzky. He fought a lot to get minimal equipment and supplies, and they gave it to him.”
“Were there other times when infectious diseases spread like this?”
“Yes, but baruch Hashem it was always with rachamim. I don’t remember ever having an epidemic, like typhus, for example. Back in the camps, that used to spread rapidly…”
“The camps.” Naomi swallowed. “Zeide, would you tell me a little about that time?”
“Before we came here?” His eyes clouded for a moment. “Why?”
“So that I know,” she replied simply. “I…you’ve never told me.”
Zeide Nachum washed his hands silently and sat down near the table. He began to eat his bread, but he was so engrossed in his thoughts, he hardly seemed to notice the dark squash on his plate. He toyed with his cutlery, and only after Naomi washed and sat down as well did he say, with a sigh, “I’ll tell you a bit, from the end.”
He continued eating in silence, his mind clearly miles away; he hardly even noticed that he was putting food in his mouth. Perhaps he was worried about his sick grandson and the other patients; perhaps it was the memories.
“From our group, they chose a few engineers, a doctor, carpenters, tailors, builders, and Max and Leo Sherer, sons of a well-known family that worked in the fur industry in Hungary. The Hauptmanns said that they had received an order to build a small military base in the Austrian Alps. Many of us volunteered, because they were the Wehrmacht and we were less afraid of them than of the SS.” He put his fork down and looked at the glass cup that Naomi was filling with tea.
He put his hand out almost blindly and gripped the handle of the glass. “We knew that the chances of getting out alive from the place we were in were very slim, if at all… They put us all onto a train, and from there, we moved to trucks. And from there we walked…until we got here.”
“What did they want you to do here?” Naomi asked.
Near the front door, Bentzy cleared his throat. He did not like the direction this conversation was taking.
“I was at work digging on the Austrian border,” he said suddenly. “The Germans and the Hungarians seemed about to surrender to the Russians and the Americans, the French and the British. The front was very close to us, until one day, they stopped our work and we had to start moving. I won’t tell you what we went through on that horrible trip, part of which took place on Pesach… But at one point they took us to a place called Matthausen. We were Jews from a few different places: Poland, Hungary, Czechoslovakia…” He paused.
Naomi ate silently. The food tasted bland, not only because her grandmother hardly used any salt when she cooked.
“There, they threw us into tents and didn’t look at us anymore; they gave us soup once a day, not even bread, and waited for us to die. And it almost happened… But after two days, three Wehrmacht officers suddenly showed up. They were Majors. One of them was Samson, I don’t remember his last name, and the other two were Klaus Wangel and Ludwig Heidrich. They said that they were looking for Jews who were still ready to work in exchange for food.
“It looked like the Nazis were going to lose the war and the Allies would take control over Europe. So they were apparently preparing for the day that they would have to fight back with guerilla warfare. This place was supposed to be a supply base for the future fighters, but in the end, it all turned around. Japan bombed America with two atom bombs, on New York and Washington, and the whole world came down on its knees.”
“But you were already here.”
“Yes. I don’t know how this place was forgotten by the Nazi army. Samson disappeared at one point, and the other two said he’d been killed in one of the last battles of the war, and they decided to name the camp for him. They somehow were able to hide from the Wehrmacht the huge thing that they built here. Josef Wangel, Klaus’s son, married Katarina, Ludwig’s only daughter, and the tradition they had from their parents was to do everything they could to protect the Jews here, because they only benefitted from it.”
There was a knock at the door, and Babbe walked in. Naomi leaped to her feet, pale as a sheet. “Babbe!” she exclaimed, her hands beginning to shake.
But Sara Liba quickly took both of Naomi’s hands in her own.
“I just wanted to tell you that Aryeh is feeling much better, baruch Hashem,” she said, not even taking off her coat. “But I didn’t have anyone that I could send to tell you the good news at this hour.”
“And you, Babbe? How did they let you go out after curfew?”
“Special permission. So you should know, Naomi, that your husband baruch Hashem is sitting up, and that he even ate a whole bowl of soup. Oh, and he asked me to let you know that the smell of the soup isn’t as good as the smell of your soup that he didn’t get to eat back when he first got sick.” She smiled and turned around, heading back outside. “Good night! See you in the morning, b’ezras Hashem!”
Bentzy was still finishing melaveh malkah, but Dena already put
the kids’ sweaters on. It was Motza’ei Shabbos, and they were all tired and impatient and just wanted to go home.
Home.
Not that she could really call their rented apartment “home,” but after so much time, you get used to anything. Even the long hours that you spend wandering mostly alone through the many large rooms, and not because your husband is doing “mishmar” from sunrise to sunset.
Fine. She knew that a good wife needs to be a good wife, irrespective of how much time her husband dedicates to his learning. A good wife can do what she needs to do in other ways as well. It reminded her of something, and as soon as she finished zipping up Duvi’s coat, she went to the refrigerator in the corner of the kitchen.
Bentzy bentched and stood up, taking the handle of their wheelie case. “Thanks for Shabbos, Mommy. It was beautiful.”
“We’re waiting for you again next week, of course,” his mother said with a smile. Then she turned around, and her eyes grew wide when she saw her daughter-in-law standing near the open fridge. There was hardly anything that screamed lack of manners more than opening the refrigerator in a strange house, even if you were a daughter-in-law. “Are you looking for something, Dena?”
Dena blushed, registering her mother-in-law’s reaction just a bit too late. “I’m sorry…” she said and quickly closed the fridge door.
“I’m sorry, I just wanted to…oh, whatever, it doesn’t matter.”
“What did you want? I packed up the patties for you for Sunday.” Her shvigger’s words made the blush on Dena’s cheeks spread even more. “Was it the cake you wanted?”
“Whatever, no, it doesn’t matter.”
Bentzy hardly noticed what was happening. He took Duvi’s hand and walked with him and the suitcase toward the front door.
Her mother-in-law, with all her manners, knew how to be stubborn. “No, really. What were you looking for?”
“I wanted to see where you store your spices.”
“The spices? On the decorative shelf. You’ve seen it, no?”
“I thought those spices were only decorative, and that the ones you use are in here.”
“In the fridge? Why in the fridge?”
“Well, can’t they get wormy if they’re left out?”
“Spices?” Her mother-in-law chuckled. “This is not Israel, where it’s very warm, Dena. Europe is much colder, and our high-quality spices certainly remain fresh for a long time, even when they’re stored at room temperature.”
“But…” Dena tried to instruct herself to stop, but she just couldn’t. “Now, when it’s cool out, that’s certainly the case. But it’s not very cold here in the summer.”
Near the front door, Bentzy cleared his throat. He did not like the direction this conversation was taking.
Shloimy did the job for him. “Ima, come already!” he began to wail. “I want to go to sleeeeep!”
Red-faced, Dena retreated from the fridge and its lack of spices. She waved to her mother-in-law, and off they went.
AQI am chronically constipated and I recently heard that boosting bile production can help me out. I would appreciate if you can share any information with me on this topic.
Bile is a vital fluid produced by the liver that plays a crucial role in the digestion and absorption of fats. Bile is a yellow-green fluid composed of bile salts, cholesterol, bilirubin, electrolytes, and water. This complex mixture helps break down fats into fatty acids, facilitating their absorption in the small intestine. Additionally, bile assists in the excretion of waste products from the liver, including bilirubin, a byproduct of red blood cell breakdown.
Bile is made in the liver, an essential organ located in the upper right quadrant of the abdomen. Once produced, bile is transported through a network of ducts to the gallbladder, a small, pear-shaped organ situated beneath the liver. The gallbladder stores and concentrates bile, making it more potent. When food, particularly fatty food, enters the digestive tract, the gallbladder releases bile into the small intestine through the bile ducts.
Bile performs several critical functions in the body:
Fat Emulsification: Bile salts break down large fat globules into smaller droplets, a process called emulsification. This increases the surface area for pancreatic enzymes to further digest fats.
Facilitating Absorption: Once fats are broken down into fatty acids and monoglycerides, bile aids their absorption through the intestinal walls.
Waste Excretion: Bile carries waste products, including excess cholesterol and bilirubin, out of the body.
Maintaining Gut Health: Bile salts have antimicrobial properties that help control the growth of harmful bacteria in the intestines.
Signs of bile deficiency include:
Bloating and Gas: Poor fat digestion can lead to fermentation in the gut, causing bloating and gas.
Nutrient Deficiencies: Inadequate bile can result in poor absorption of fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, and K).
Digestive Discomfort: General discomfort, including indigestion and abdominal pain, may occur.
Enhancing bile production is beneficial for digestive health and overall well-being. Here are four ways to naturally boost bile production:
Incorporate bitter foods and herbs- Bitter foods naturally stimulate bile production. Green leafy vegetables have a bitter taste base so these are a great inclusion. Look for foods like dandelion greens, broccoli, kale, and Brussels sprouts in your diet. Medicinal herbs like St. Mary’s Thistle, Globe Artichoke and Gentian are also excellent. You can buy these in your local health store. Drinking lemon juice in warm water before meals can also enhance bile flow.
Amino Acids: Amino acids are the building blocks of proteins and play a significant role in bile production. We obtain amino acids from our protein foods and some are crucial for bile production.
Selenium: Selenium is a trace mineral essential for liver health and bile production. It acts as an antioxidant, protecting the liver from oxidative stress and supporting its detoxification processes. Good sources of selenium include: Brazil Nutsjust one or two nuts a day can provide the recommended daily amount of selenium and sunflower seeds. These seeds offer a plant-based source of selenium.
Betaine: Betaine, supports liver function and bile production by donating methyl groups necessary for methylation processes. It is found in: beets, spinach and quinoa.
By incorporating bitter foods and herbs, amino acids, selenium, and betaine into your diet, you can boost bile production and enhance your digestive efficiency. Recognizing signs of bile deficiency early can also help in taking proactive steps to maintain optimal digestive health.

About ten months ago, I found out that a dear friend was diagnosed with a serious illlness I recited the enntire Tehillim for him daily, free of charge A month ago, he informed me that he is now complettelly healthy witth no side effects, and I can remove him from my prayer lisst Typically, I charge $540 per r month for daily prayers as part of a group If someone in the grroup requests that I visit the Ohel, it costs $100 peer visit For individual prayers, it’s $100 at home and $150 at the Ohel
A friend once told me that reggardlesss of how much Tehilllim I recite, I have an incredibble heart and have hosted d the Rebbe’s guests in n my home The Rebbe is aware of this, and every time I reqquesst a blesssing on someone’s behalff, the Rebbe responds by granting the person the blessings or miracles they need I used to have 30 beds in my basement and often accommodated 75 people at a time, with my home being full to capacity for about eight months each year I hosted farbrengens that brought together Crown Heiights ressiddeents and Shluchim from all over, ranging from 10 to 75 peeople. During Tishrei, my home was open n for about seven weeks with food available around the clock, serving meals for 25 to 150 people each timme. I often cooked by myself with no assistance.
In total, I hosted a few thousand people e in my home each year Sometimes I felt liike a guesst in my own home because I would find peoople sitting on my couch and had to ask them to move so I could sit down, to which they would ask who I was. I would respond, “My name is on the deed of the house.

Once in a while you take out the collection and carefully count how many candies, pieces of jewelry, or cards are in your collection. Since they are precious to you, you want to keep track of them.
We learn from this that things that are counted have a special status. The Jewish people are counted numerous times throughout the Torah, including in this week’s Parsha, which shows us how important and special we are in the eyes of Hashem.
How can you remind yourself of how precious you are to Hashem?
Each one of us is a vital part of Am Yisrael and each time Hashem counts us, He is showing us how cherished and loved we are to Him.
Make this cookie cake by using number cookie cutters or creating a number template. Draw numbers (0-9), laminate them & cut them out.
Roll out the dough on parchment paper, and use the cut-out numbers/cookie cutter to cut out 2 of each number.
Once the cookies are baked and cooled, sandwich two matching cookies, pipe frosting on the bottom cookie, place the second cookie on top, frost the top, and add sprinkles or piped designs as desired
Preheat the oven to 350°F. Combine oil, sugar, vanilla, and eggs until well-mixed.
Bake for 10 minutes or until golden brown.
Refrigerate for 10 minutes, and enjoy the beautiful Mini Numbered Cookie Cakes you just baked!
Add flour, baking powder, and salt to the mixture, then knead to create a soft dough.
Prepare the buttercream frosting. Beat all the frosting ingredients together until smooth. Add food coloring. Place the frosting into a ziplock bag.
