Some of the non-frum kids ask Naomi to show them how to write in aleph-beis; Mila is furious at Naomi for teaching these kids things their parents wouldn’t want them to learn, and promises to tell the higher-ups about this. Katy sticks up for Naomi.

Dena is miserable about having to leave Eretz Yisrael for her in-laws’ affluent home in Vienna. It makes her feel even more inferior next to her high-achieving sisters.

CHAPTER FIFTEEN

“What are you busy with now, Binyamin?” A shadow fell over the notebook. It was his cousin, Aryeh, rubbing his hands, which were wet from washing them before davening. “What are these notebooks?”

“They’re my father’s, zichrono l’vrachah. About the subject of treifos and lungs.”

Wide-eyed, Aryeh studied the stack of notebooks, Binyamin, and then the stack again. “Oh, yes. I remember, he used to write a lot.”

For a moment, Binyamin raised his head in a questioning motion; then he went back to the notebook. He finished reading the last page and closed it with a sigh. There was just one left.

“You don’t look like you slept much last night,” Aryeh commented.

“That’s nearly accurate.”

“What do you mean?”

“I didn’t sleep at all.”

“Why? How are you going to function at work today?”

“I worked harder yesterday to finish more than I had to, to cover part of today’s quota. I should be able to doze here and there at the factory.” He leaned back and stretched. “Is it already ‘misheyakir’? Can we put on tefillin?”

“Yes.” His cousin glanced out the small window. It was still dark outside, but the sky was beginning to turn a bit blue on the eastern horizon.

“So I’m the second one today for Belsky’s tefillin. If I don’t finish reviewing these pages before my turn, Aryeh, take it please, alright?”

Aryeh nodded and turned to see who had the black leather bag now. “And I’m fourth—I’ll tell you when that turn comes. What were you looking for all night? Something connected to what you’re learning now with Rabbi Schwartzbrod?”

“No, although I did see a few things that I want to go back to more thoroughly later on.”

“So what are you looking for?”

“We’ll talk afterward. It’s not for shul,” Binyamin said, and silently opened the last notebook.

Aryeh didn’t know if his evasiveness was because the subject was not suited for a mikdash me’at, or if Binyamin was uneasy talking about the notebooks with his cousin who struggled to read to this day, even though he was already in his twenties. It could also be because of the “ears in the walls” that had to be taken into account whenever they were in a closed place. He glanced at Binyamin out of the corner of his eye; the younger boy was engrossed in the notebooks. Aryeh waited for his turn with the tefillin, while listening to the discussion among the men about how the time had come to add more pairs to the nine existing ones.

Binyamin scanned the pages of the final notebook. Based on the date, it was less than a month and a half before his father’s passing. Why had Mamme been so afraid of these notebooks? There were no secrets in them, only very clear summaries of various sugyos in Shas, most of them from Maseches Chulin.

At the end of davening, Binyamin caught up to Aryeh as he was leaving the shul. “You said that my father wrote a lot. You remember that?”

“I was almost seven when he passed away, so yes, I do remember it. But let’s talk in the factory, okay?”

Aryeh hastily ate his breakfast ahead of what was sure to be a busy day. He also needed to speak to his mother before he answered Binyamin’s questions.

The passing of Dovid Asher Shvirtz had always been a painful subject. Mamme and Aunt Rechel didn’t discuss it, or at least not in his presence. Binyamin, the young orphan, had only mentioned his father once, months after the passing, when he whispered hesitantly, “My Tatte went to Shamayim. But we don’t talk about him, because Mamme says he’s happy there and doesn’t want to come back.”

What had happened suddenly?

“Whatever you remember.” She smiled at him and dashed out. The stripping of the hides at the slaughterhouse was as strenuous and disgusting as always, and it made Aryeh forget every topic of conversation not related to foxes. But as he attended to the carcass of the second fox, someone entered behind him. “Can we talk now?” he asked.

Binyamin’s voice.

“It’s a pretty awful scenery to be discussing your father, zichrono l’vrachah,” Aryeh said, putting down the knife. “Especially since what I remember of him are very pastoral scenes.”

“Pastoral?” Binyamin leaned on the drab, gray wall.

“I was with my mother in the manor-house kitchen a lot, and it looked out over their garden, and I remember your father walking there along the flowerbeds. And he spent every spare minute seated at the table in the garden, writing.”

“Angry? Are you sure? Maybe you’re just imagining it. You know, anger and grief sometimes intermingle…”

“Rechel told me she was going to give him Dovid Asher’s notebooks,” Chani replied as she quickly got ready to leave for the manor-house kitchen. “Take a hard-boiled egg and some bread, Aryeh. I’m running to work.”

“Thanks, Mamme. But tell me, what happened suddenly?”

“I don’t know. He asked for them.”

“And can I answer his questions?”

Chani, who was already standing outside, walked back in. “Which questions?”

“About the memories I have of his father.”

“Why not? Let him know something about his father. It’s important. I never understood why Rechel chose absolute silence, although I can’t judge her. But if she went now and gave him the notebooks, which almost certainly awakened all that pain again…then I assume she doesn’t mind if he wants to hear a bit about his father.”

“Whatever I remember.”

“At their table? In the manor-house garden?”

“Yes. I remember him to this day with the backdrop of trees, leaves, and flowering greenery, sitting with his pencil and writing.”

“What did the Nazis have to say about that?”

“I don’t think they usually said anything to him about it, except for two vague memories that I have.”

“From his last day of work for them?”

“No, actually my mother wasn’t feeling well that day, and we went home early. But I remember once, when old man Wangel, Josef’s father, shouted at him and took away his notebook. The other memory I have is of someone standing and photographing him while he was busy writing.”

For a moment, Binyamin was quiet. Then he asked, “And what happened with the notebook that the old man took away from him?”

“It’s hard for me to remember. I was about six at the time… If I’m not mistaken, he leafed through it, and then gave it back a few minutes later.”

“Gave it back?”

“Yes.”

Binyamin nodded. “Okay,” he whispered. “Thanks. And that’s all you remember of my father?”

“I really only remember your father sitting and writing those chiddushei Torah,” Aryeh said. “Not much else.”

“So why was my mother so afraid of these notebooks?”

Binyamin’s eyes were luminous. “And who is she angry at when she talks about my father and the notebooks?”

“Angry? Are you sure? Maybe you’re just imagining it. You know, anger and grief sometimes intermingle…”

“Maybe,” Binyamin said. But it was clear to them both that the answer did not satisfy him. “Maybe.”

Aryeh was quiet for a long moment. “Do you know what I think you can do?”

“What?”

“Ask her about it.”

They were sitting in the most fully equipped playroom that Dena had ever seen, and taking into account that most of the toys and games were from her husband’s childhood, it certainly said something about her mother-in-law’s investment—both in the massive purchase of the toys, and in the way she kept them in pristine shape.

Toys that lit up, spun around, flew, and drove; building toys; thinking games; books, crafts, and writing supplies… they were all there. Duvi and Shloimy walked around with sparkling eyes, moving from one thing to the next with the speed of light. Dovi had left his coloring book and returned the crayons to their drawer. Now he was checking out a rocking horse painted in bright colors.

In her parents’ house, they’d never been able to keep toys in this type of condition, not to mention that they didn’t have all that many toys to begin with. She had no idea if anything remained from her childhood. Maybe a few baby rattles and an old game of Monopoly that was missing half the cards. But that was not a new flaw; already when she was twelve it wasn’t play-worthy. They kept the game only because of the nostalgia.

“I have nothing to play with friends who come to me,” she would complain. “All our games are missing pieces.”

“So trade stickers instead!” her older sisters would suggest, and that was always what she ended up doing. But then, fiery-eyed, she would promise everyone that in her own home, b’ezras Hashem, she’d make sure that her kids took very good care of their games and toys, and they wouldn’t lose a single piece. The room would also be cleaned up perfectly every day.

“You can start now, you know,” Bina told her one evening with a laugh. “Why wait until you are a mother? Everyone would be so happy if the room was cleaned up every day by you; you’ll be like our personal cleaning lady!”

At first Dena had considered getting offended, but then she decided to take the advice seriously. Not that it helped for toys that were missing pieces, or whose boxes were torn. But the room looked great. She didn’t miss a single day, not even before her huge math final that she’d been so pressured about. At the end, she’d passed the final, albeit with tremendous effort—and throughout it all, the room was clean.

It had become a family joke between her and her sisters, and when Bentzion Hanter of Vienna had been suggested for her, they’d all said that a “yekke” would be perfect for Dena, absolutely.

1. Before removing your refrigerator shelves, snap a picture of the shelving layout, to remember how to put back.

2. When covering refrigerator shelves, AVOID blocking the vents.

WASHER

1. NEVER wash toys in a washer, even when using a mesh bag. It can be done in a dishwasher, while using a mesh bag.

You know the answer. And they don't have anyone else to do it for them. If not us, these children won't have the basic clothing and shoes they so desperately need.

Recap: At the bail hearing, Mrs. Kleinberg puts up a façade of strength to all those who come to show her support.

Mrs. Gordon teaches Perry and Bruchi in her office until Mrs. Kleinberg calls her daughters to tell them that the decision about bail won’t be taking place that day, much to her daughters’ devastation. Mrs. Gordon tries to comfort her students.

Sam Kleinberg is asked to plead guilty or not guilty to each charge, and he himself is not sure that he can plead not guilty to each one, knowing that he did have an inkling of some risks involved in the Finance2 software..

CHAPTER 26

Mrs. Tabak had valiantly faced her eighth graders, with all their turmoil, for the beginning of the morning. After davening, she led them in saying Tehillim, and they surprised her with the passion and fervor with which they said the words.

Some of the girls were very nearly crying.

This was not their typical shallow and indifferent behavior. They’d been deeply shaken up by their friend’s misfortune.

Surreptitiously, Mrs. Tabak kept checking her watch and stealing glances at the door, hoping to see Mrs. Gordon knock.

Finally, when the girls were becoming restless from saying Tehillim, and Mrs. Tabak felt she wouldn’t be able to rein in their upheaval too much longer, the knock on the door came.

It was Mrs. Gordon, her complexion somewhat pasty. A hush fell over the eighth graders as they faced their principal.

Their expressions tugged something in Mrs. Gordon’s heart. These girls looked almost as woebegone as Bruchi herself, who was still sitting in her office. Having their class leader toppled had shaken them up, waking

them up to the world outside their petty concerns.

The fear and uncertainty that had been stirred up permeated the classroom as Mrs. Gordon opened her mouth to speak.

Once again, the enormity of the task hit her.

Being a principal, she reflected fleetingly, was far more than a job. These girls were looking to her to right the axis on the world, and the words she would say really did have that power.

She looked at their desks, and the Tehillims open on each one, and that gave her the inspiration to begin speaking. Remembering what she had told Bruchi in her office, she suddenly knew that this was what these girls needed to hear, as well.

“All of you have a Tehillim open on your desk,” Mrs. Gordon began. “When you say Tehillim, you might wonder what it’s actually doing. Can it really help?”

Every face stared up at her, and Mrs. Gordon knew that far more than any lecture she usually gave, they would each remember the answer she gave now.

“We’re sitting here in a classroom, and it seems funny to think that from your seats, you have the power to change things in other places. But the fact is that that is absolutely true.”

Mrs. Gordon then launched into a famous story regarding a woman who had brought back a car crash victim to life with the power of her Tehillim, as she sat in her car backed up in traffic due to the crash. The girls listened with complete, undivided attention.

“Even when we don’t see that type of results,” Mrs. Gordon concluded, “every tefillah does something more than any physical action can do.”

That was the message she’d given Bruchi, and that was the message she gave the eighth-grade class, infusing them with the knowledge that they still possessed the power to do so much, even when they felt completely knocked down.

It was impossible to know if any of the people invited to the party actually wanted to be there.

But for many of them, like Jerry, it wasn’t much of a choice.

Almost to spite the long arm of the law, Casey held his birthday party outside, on a massive patio in the back of his mansion. The blackness of the night outside lent a naturally dim ambience to the party, which was lit by exotically colored lanterns and flashing colored floor lights.

The heavy smoke from drug-infused cigarettes made Officer Jerry feel nauseous. He was pretty sure there were illegal drugs circulating in the crowd, but then, it was Casey’s party after all. His business associates and fellow drug dealers were certainly at the party, and many had brought along a drug stash.

Casey hadn’t scrimped on the food aspect, either. Waiters circulated through the crowd holding platters of exotic meats with strong smells. Jerry couldn’t bring himself to taste any of it.

Most of the other guests seemed to be enjoying themselves though. As Casey strode through the crowd, his bodyguards all around him, he took pleasure in that fact.

“This is the night to enjoy our power,” he gloated to his cronies. “Enjoy the best stuff in the world!”

He ignored the guards stationed all around the property and the tense atmosphere of the party itself. This night, he was letting loose. He was defying danger just by pretending it didn’t exist.

Jerry watched his secret boss and felt terror. Casey was drunk with confidence, exulting in his power. He felt secure with the information Jerry had given him, but Jerry himself was shaky and unsure.

Inserting himself discreetly into a group of celebrities that Casey had invited, he let the inane, bragging talk swirl around him, while he pretended to laugh along.

“Nah, he could have done much better for himself,” the local movie producer was saying daringly to the group, sending furtive glances in Casey’s direction. “I mean, he’s limited. He can only sell whatever he gets from Pablo. If Pablo says no, he can’t do anything about it. That’s not quite a drug king for you.”

“What do you mean? In this territory, there’s no one that’s gonna mess with him, he’s the boss. That’s why he’s the king.”

“Yeah, some king. Why’d he tie himself into that arrangement with Pablo, anyhow?” The whispers turned ever more daring as each speaker made sure that Casey was still across the patio, busy with some other guests.

“Hey, Poker, who are you to talk?” Brett, the movie producer, said slyly. “You’re a dealer here yourself, you can’t sell anything but the King’s stuff.”

Jerry looked at the guy Brett was talking to, and felt a sudden iciness in his stomach.

He could have sworn it was Detective Garrison. In the next seconds, fifty-five escape plans raged through his mind while his body went rigid. His drink gave the tiniest slosh, but that was enough for Garrison. His eyes pierced right through Jerry, making Jerry feel

like his life was being sucked out of him. Then Garrison, disguised as Poker, casually turned to Brett.

“So what? You know what kind of profits I could have if the King got more stuff?”

There was menace in Poker/Garrison’s tone, and Jerry had a feeling it wasn’t aimed only at silencing Brett. It was a warning to him, as well.

Jerry felt himself swooning, as he realized the danger he was in. But before he could catch himself, he found himself staring into Garrison/Poker’s hard face. His black eyes burned into Jerry, though he didn’t say a word.

And Jerry knew that it was hopeless.

“Not bad, all in all,” Shachne told his brother’s family as he drove them home. It had been a long, exhausting day in court, and constantly having to fend off the predatory reporters hadn’t made things easier.

Silence greeted Shachne’s positive words. Yossi, sitting in the passenger seat near him, was the only one who looked at him.

“You’re still hoping we can get bail? You heard what the lawyers said. The judge is going to be afraid for his skin. The media is ripping their teeth into this story.” Yossi’s tone was resigned.

He was too macho to show how much it was tearing him up inside, seeing his father like that, sitting like a hunted man in the defendant’s dock.

“As of now, it’s still a possibility. The lawyers are working really hard on this.”

“Shachne, let’s not kid ourselves,” Yossi said. “We can have the best lawyers in the country, but we can’t stand up against this kind of media scandal. It’s too much.”

Shachne was thoughtful.

“It’s true, we haven’t worked hard enough on that aspect,” he acknowledged. “We should think about that, getting public support for your father. I’m going to talk to people about it.”

There was silence in the car for a few moments.

“We also need to think about my father,” Yossi said, the words coming awkwardly from his mouth. “It doesn’t look like he’s getting out of jail in the next few days yet.”

“We need to get in touch with an organization that helps people in prison,” Mrs. Kleinberg said.

Her insides curdled with shame as she heard the words she’d just said.

“Yes, that’s another thing to add to the list,” everpractical Shachne said. “Though he didn’t say much about what it’s been like there. I guess we’ll have to talk to him again.”

Men were so unbearably practical, Mrs. Kleinberg thought.

“What about the girls? Perry and Bruchi?” Yossi asked. “I know they went to my house now after school for supper, but we need to figure out a better solution for them.”

“Right, they can’t be home alone.”

Yossi looked at his mother through the rearview mirror. “Are you going to be okay tonight? Should I stay for the

FLAKY MEAT PIES

Whether you’re hoarding some puff pastry in your freezer or have a pan of leftover meat from Purim, this recipe solves two-in-one, and is absolutely delicious.

Ingredients

3 tablespoons oil, for frying

1 teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon sugar

½ teaspoon black pepper

1 white onion, chopped

2-3 cloves garlic, chopped

1 red or orange pepper, chopped

8-10 slices of leftover (defrosted) beef, shredded or cubed

1- 8 oz. can tomato sauce

2 large sheets of puff pastry, defrosted

Directions:

1. Preheat oven to 375° and line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Set aside.

2. Heat oil in a medium saucepan over medium heat.

3. Add the chopped onion, salt, sugar, and black pepper and saute for 5-7 minutes until golden.

4. Add the garlic, peppers, and beef, and cook for another 2 minutes.

5. Add the tomato sauce and cook for an additional 3 minutes until flavors have melded.

6. Divide each sheet of puff pastry into two large rectangles (cut by the fold). Using a rolling pin, slightly stretch each sheet so it’s not so thick.

7. Spoon half the meat mixture in a line lengthwise into one rectangle, leaving a small border all around. Carefully transfer the other sheet on top of the mixture until the edges of both rectangles are even.

8. Pinch the edges close with a fork and create light slits with a knife.

9. Brush the pastry with egg wash. Sprinkle with sesame seeds. Repeat with the other pastry sheet and the rest of the meat mixture.

10. Place the meat pies on the prepared baking sheet.

11. Bake for 30-35 minutes until golden brown. Slice and serve warm.

LEMONY WHITE WINE CHICKEN

This Crockpot meal is the perfect thing to satisfy your hungry Erev Pesach cleaners.

Best Part? It’s Kosher L’Pesach, so you can easily make it in your Pesach kitchen and serve it without worries about crumbs or extra pots to clean.

TIP: Save this recipe for a no-fuss, hearty Chol Homoed dinner.

Yield: 4-6 servings

Ingredients:

4-6 chicken bottoms

1 white onion, sliced

4 Yukon Gold potatoes, peeled and cubed

1-2 sweet potato,peeled and cubed

1 carrot, peeled and sliced

1 lemon, sliced

¼ cup white wine

1 tablespoon olive oil

1 tablespoon salt

½ tablespoon freshly ground black pepper

½ teaspoon garlic powder, optional ½ teaspoon paprika, optional

Directions:

1. Place the sliced onions on the bottom of your slow cooker.

2. Top with potatoes, sweet potatoes, and carrots. Arrange the chicken bottoms and lemon slices on top.

3. Pour the white wine on to the chicken. Drizzle with olive oil. Sprinkle with salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and paprika (optional).

4. Cook on high for 4-6 hours or on low for 6-8 hours.

5. Serve warm.

CRUNCHY DELI PASTA SALAD

Have some extra pasta lying around? Clear the pantry with this crunchy and yummy deli-inspired pasta salad.

Yield: 9x13 pan

Dressing:

¼ red onion, finely diced

2 tablespoons red wine vinegar

2 tablespoons freshly squeezed lemon juice

1 tablespoon honey

½ cup extra-virgin olive oil

1 clove garlic, crushed

1 teaspoon salt

½ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

Salad:

12 oz. mini shell pasta

4 scallions, thinly sliced (TIP: use a kitchen scissors for easy cutting)

2 red bell peppers, diced

6 oz. (½ box) grape tomatoes, diced

¾ cup sliced olives

1 pack pastrami or salami, thinly sliced

Directions:

Dressing:

1. In a jar or bowl, combine all ingredients and whisk until combined.

Salad:

2. Boil the pasta in salted water according to package instructions. Drain and rinse under cold water.

3. In a large bowl, combine the drained pasta, scallions, peppers, grape tomatoes, olives, and pastrami or salami: Drizzle with ¾ of the dressing and toss to combine. Add more dressing to taste. Serve.

QI'm a skinny 18-year-old, but over the last few months, I gained like 10 pounds. I know it's okay because I'm skinny but still my skirts are becoming tight on me. What's an easy effective way to lose these few pounds? I am a big eater with a good metabolism, I already tried not to eat late at night or double portions but it doesn't help because I'm not used to it and I stay hungry.

AFirstly, you are blessed. Don’t take your happy metabolism for granted. In order to help you best, it would make sense to do some research as to what made you gain the weight. I would suggest that you keep a food journal for a week and reflect back at the end of the week and try to detect a process as to where you might be going wrong.

Here are some things that can easily be making you put on weight, inadvertently:

Too many “healthy” treats: you need to understand that healthy does not equal weight loss friendly. For instance, acai bowls are all the rage now. While the acai berry is very healthy, and an acai bowl is full of nutrition, an acai bowl is loaded with sugar.

Think about what your bowl contains: Acai berries! Bananas! Strawberries! Mango! Kiwi! Cocoa nibs! Almond butter! Coconut! Are these toppings healthy? Most definitely! Weight loss friendly? Absolutely not! One of my clients had an acai bowl for lunch daily. She gained two pounds that week. Why? Because this bowl contains loads of sugar. And what makes us gain weight? Sugar! That does not mean that eating fruits is unhealthy for you. Fruits are incredible edibles! They contain antioxidants, fiber and loads of nutrients. However, eating too many fruits daily in place of healthy carbs, fats and proteins will most definitely make you gain weight.

Let’s take a look at protein/Kind bars. While these are great snacking options for athletes and for anyone who is not trying to lose weight, these are by far not weight loss friendly. A typical Kind bar contains honey, nuts, peanut butter and many added ingredients that may be healthy but will not aid your weight loss journey. Rather opt for a real fruit or a protein filled yogurt with no sugar. Consuming too many healthy treats over time will result in weight gain. Here is an excerpt from a Harvard Medical Study: “Perhaps the most remarkable thing about all of this is how little our weight tends to change from day to day. In fact, only a few excess calories each day could lead to significant weight gain at the end of a year. For example, eating an extra apple each day could lead to a weight gain of nearly 9 pounds by the end of one year! Similarly, even a small reduction in calories each day could lead to remarkable weight loss. Eliminating dessert one day a week would lead to weight loss of nearly six pounds in a year.”

Exercise: After a heavy workout, especially the ones that use your large muscles, you can easily weigh a few extra pounds for several days. Those microscopic tears that occur in your muscle cells after every workout heal through a process of natural inflammation. That involves some pooling of fluids around the muscle cells, which can make you puff up. Let your muscles recover and forget about the scale. Ask yourself if you recently upped your exercise. This can be the culprit.

Eating close to bedtime: The closer to bed, the less likely your body will use that food up as fuel since you aren’t really doing anything when you are asleep. Food eaten at night is more often stored as fat because we tend to be less active, so we increase fat storage at that time, especially depending on the composition of the food you ate later in the evening. Carbs, specifically, if not burned, are then stored as fat. To combat this type of weight gain, it is important to eat on a set schedule. This is something I stress on greatly as it is a huge aid for healthy and sustainable weight loss. We structure our day around 3 meals and 2 snacks and we really should aim to end our eating by 7 pm. The body and especially the scale will respond best if the timing is consistent. I do want to introduce you to the concept of “skinny fat”. Skinny

fat doesn’t have a standardized definition and isn’t a medical term, so different people use the term in various ways. It’s usually used to refer to less muscle tone and strength as well as a relatively high body fat percentage, despite having a “normal” BMI. This term is often used negatively to describe somebody who isn’t physically fit. Somebody who is considered “skinny fat” may have a large amount of visceral fat and may not have much muscle definition. When you eat food high in sugar, your blood sugar rises and your body produces insulin to shuttle the sugar into fat and muscle cells for storage. Chronically elevated insulin levels can lead to insulin resistance, which happens when your body stops responding to insulin. Insulin resistance is linked to increased body fat, especially around your midsection. That being said, yes, one can be thin, but that does not mean that they are healthy. Not having good sleeping habits and eating poorly, most likely will catch up with you in your later years. It’s also important to mention that many of us are obsessed with the number on the scale. However, the truth is, that the scale cannot tell you if it is measuring water weight, fat, or muscle. In fact, the scale can be downright misleading to thin people, since you may think that you don’t need to change your lifestyle around since your weight is in line with what the “charts” say. That being said, how can we slowly incorporate healthier lifestyle habits?

Start with breakfast: No matter what happened the night before, start the day with a solid breakfast (just a cup of coffee doesn't count). The best breakfasts contain a mix of protein and carbohydrates: Think steel-cut oatmeal, yogurt and fruit, or egg whites and mixed vegetables. And there's yummy news if it's sweets you crave, you might be able to get away with a bit of chocolate or pastry in the morning as long as you make it part of a balanced meal and keep your portion sizes small.

Build exercise into your day so that you build up your muscle mass.

Start drinking water- Swap your usual soda or sugary juice for water you’ll start to feel better. Drinking water consistently aids weight loss in both adults and teens because it both fills you up and spares you the calories from other beverage choices. Sometimes your body misinterprets thirst for hunger, so while you may feel hungry, you’re actually thirsty.

Add fiber and nutrients into your diet- When you eat, think not only about the calories you’re about to consume, but also about the quality of the calories. Are they nothing but sugar, or do they also contain essential nutrients, such as protein, fiber, and antioxidants?

When it comes to midafternoon snacking, ask yourself “Am I really hungry?” and “What am I hungry for?” Try to identify what you are really feeling and then take it from there. If you want to snack, opt for a healthy snack such as fruit or nuts, instead of cake or sweets.

Sleep! Evidence is mounting that chronic sleep deprivation is a major reason for weight gain. In research published in the journal Circulation, a small group of men and women deprived of just an hour of sleep for eight days in a row ate an extra 550 calories a day, an amount that can translate to a weight gain of a pound in just one week (and the extra hour awake didn’t use up any extra calories). Blood tests showed increases in ghrelin, the hormone linked to hunger, and decreases in leptin, the hormone that tells you that you feel full. Aim to sleep between 7-9 hours per night. I don’t want you to feel disappointed by my response, rather invigorated to tackle change, one step at a time! Good luck!

You remember that the breakfast options you usually have are full of good things that make you strong & healthy. They have all the nutrients that your body needs to feel good & have energy for the whole day. Even though sweets are yummy & tempting, it’s the healthy breakfast that really helps you feel your best & have lots of fun. We always want to choose the nutritious options that help you be strong and ready for all the exciting things you’ll do each day!

The next time you eat a snack, check the package to find the Kosher symbol on it.

Within us lies a special spark, a Neshama, wants us to do good & kind deeds. Just like our bodies, this essence requires nourishment to stay healthy & strong. What kind of foods fuel this special spark? Kosher foods! By consuming kosher foods, we provide our Neshama with ample energy to help us do the right things! Do you know where we learn about Kosher in the Torah? It’s in this week’s Parsha, Parshas Shemini! Within this Parsha, we delve into the specifics of kosher animals & fish, including the distinguishing signs that enable us to identify them.

Using your air-dry clay, shape an oval, for the body. A small circle, for the eye. A little leaf shape, which will be used as a fin.

Overlap sequins horizontally to create fish scales. Cover tail and fin with glue and sequins. Set aside.

Fish Magnet PARSHA

Shape the tail of the fish by making a rope with the clay and bending it into the shape of a heart, help it form together using your popsicle

Attach the small ball for the eye with tacky glue and put a sequin on top for color. For the mouth, push in 2 red sequins into the clay.

Apply a thin layer of tacky glue on the oval covering most of the clay, Leave space for the face of the fish.

Scissors 4 5

Cut a strip of magnet to fit the fish and use tacky glue to attach it to the bottom of the fish. Let it dry for 24 hours.

And just like that, you have a cute Kosher Fish Magnet with Fins & Scales!

Glue the fin on top of the scales. Glue the tail to the back of the fish.
