AGreat question! This is a true fear that many women have. It is very important to understand that maintenance is no picnic. Personally, in my practice, I call maintenance, the “art of maintenance”. Maintenance is hard work! It is not a free for all. Having the mentality that one is now “off a diet” will lead to…. weight gain.
What is maintenance? Every person has a specific setpoint as to what is the best weight for their body to be at. Everyone’s setpoint is different. Genetics, nature, habits, and level of activeness are some of the contributing factors to your personal set point. Additionally, it is important to understand that the human body fluctuates. We are not machines. We will not weigh the same amount every single day. Hormonal status, lack of sleep, what you eat, and your stress level, are some examples of what will determine your weight. So, what is the art of maintenance? Maintenance means, that one is maintaining their weight. When one is on maintenance, they still need to be vigilant and mindful of what, where, how and when they are eating. Eating unlimited amounts of food, at all hours of the day, will lead to weight gain. Eating too many “healthy” treats such as sourdough, granola and nuts, will also lead to weight gain. Never doing any physical activity and living a sedentary lifestyle, will eventually also lead to weight gain.
What is one to do? Here are some pointers for maintenance:
1. Focus on eating your 3 set meals and 2 snacks daily. Make sure that your meals still contain their allotted amounts of fats, proteins and carbs.
2. It is important to eat on time with set intervals between meals and snacks.
3. Water drinking is imperative! Aim to drink 6-8 cups of water daily.
4. Do not snack after dinner. (Yes, even if you are “off your diet”)
5. Incorporate respectful forms of exercise into your day. The million-dollar question may now arise. One can reason that they reached their goal, where are my “approved treats”? As I mentioned before, when one is on maintenance, they cannot go all out, all the time. However, you can treat yourself to that occasional piece of chocolate, some granola sprinkled into your yogurt, and that occasional piece of cake. But having 4-5 treats every single day will eventually lead to weight gain since you are consuming more calories than your body ideally needs.
Also, I do recommend that when one is on maintenance, it is important to check in on the scale every so often to ensure that your body is staying in its desired maintenance range.
I do want to add that many people are against diets since
they claim that diets fail you and lead to weight gain eventually. I respectfully prefer to differ with this outlook. “Going off a diet” does not mean that you are entitled to start eating pasta and pizza all day. That is the antithesis of health and maintenance! That is not a respectful way of life and can eventually lead to health issues. So yes, if one has the mentality that since they are “off their diets”, they can now eat whatever they please, of course, they will gain weight, and of course, they will believe that “diets don’t work”. Healthy lifestyle tracks work beautifully, and understanding what your body truly needs and how to treat yourself respectfully, is a true art that we women deserve!
I am sure that we can all remember a time that we dieted for a simcha or event. If you are like most people, then you probably busted your diet once the wedding or the event was over. That is NOT maintenance! Maintenance would be to continue living your healthy lifestyle, with occasional treats and extras so that you can enjoy life and still feel and look your best.
I am happy for you that you reached the point of maintenance and I wish you much luck in understanding your personal setpoint and staying within your healthy and happy range!
QI worked really hard on losing weight the past few months and I am really afraid that I will gain it all back. What can I do to prevent this?

Yosef allows himself to be re-admitted to the hospital. Hinda receives Yosef's passport in the mail and is shocked to see that it includes Martin's photo in it, not Yosef's. She and Dov sit down to question Martin about this.
“I know what you want to ask,” Martin said. “The story is that Yosef…I don’t know what was with him that day. He got very scared of the idea that someone would see his picture, but on the other hand, he insisted that he had to renew his passport because his uncle in America needs him. In the end he told me to do the passport with my picture instead of his, and he ran outside.”
“But how did you do it?” Dov said evenly. “Are they so irresponsible there?”
“I don’t know. I came to the desk with Yosef’s documents, but none of them had an updated picture. His last passport is from when he was eight years old. I gave them my picture, and that’s what happened…”
Dov and Hinda were quiet. “You realize that this passport is useless, in any case,” Dov said, his voice sounding distant. “And without going into the details of this strange story, in your place, I really wouldn’t have done this.”
“I’m sorry.” Martin’s voice was low. “I was in a really
tough situation there, and I couldn’t think of any other way to handle it.”
“The question is how we get another passport for Yosef now. It certainly won’t be simple,” Dov said. “And it could get you in trouble as well.”
“Right now Yosef can’t fly anywhere anyway,” Hinda murmured. “With all his concern for Michoel, Yosef is in no condition to help anyone. As it is, I’m not quite sure what kind of help Michoel is expecting from him.”
“In the worst case, we’ll just fly out to him ourselves, and that’s it,” Dov declared. “They’ll have to give us an exact address if they want Yosef to come there, right?”
“Unless they’re clever enough to make up to meet us someplace. That sounds more like the type of thing the managers of this dubious place will do.”
“You refer to them almost the way you’d speak about criminals!”
“Well, don’t you get the impression that that’s really what they are?”
“Maybe.” Dov nodded, and then turned back to Martin, as if remembering that this part of the discussion was unconnected to him. “Somehow this has turned into a very unpleasant complication,” he said in a tone that made it very clear that the conversation was over for the night. “And I hope it doesn’t pose any obstacle for you going forward.”
Martin usually had a pretty good sense of when people
wanted him out of the way, but right now, that sense seemed numbed. “I wanted to ask you something,” he said, with a typical youthful, yet tactless, insistence.
“Yes?” Dov maintained the requisite coolness in his voice, but didn’t realize that his tone had risen an octave or two. Throughout this entire saga, they had tried so hard to support this kid! But now, Martin’s seeming indifference in the face of the illegal mess he had just created could drive even a normally tranquil elephant out of its mind.
“I have a problem going back to Canada, as I told you. I’m in trouble there with a few people…”
“So you said you’d fly to America.”
“Right. But I also have a few things to take care of in Canada. I need to visit my grandma’s grave, for example, and to see what happened to the stuff I left there…”
Dov and Hinda exchanged a glance. “You don’t mean to ask us to let you use this passport, do you? Because if that is what you are going to ask, you’ll understand if we suspect that you planned out this whole strange story, right?”
Martin shrugged. “You can ask Yosef himself about it,” he said, and got up.
Dov stood up as well. “And you’ll also understand if I do not accept everything he says as particularly reliable, right?”
“Fine,” Martin said, retreating toward the door. “I’m… I’m sorry again about the mess. Just know that it wasn’t from me, really. It all came from him.”
Dov was quiet. He also didn’t escort Martin to the door. Hinda stayed silent, too, her eyes fixed on the window and the lights from the port dotting the dark night. Martin put his hand on the doorknob. “I have just one suggestion,” he said, looking directly at Dov. “If you want, before I go to Canada, I’m ready to travel as Yosef to check what is doing with your uncle. If he really is in distress, I can try to get him out of there.” His eyes continued studying Dov, from his velvet black yarmulke to his shoes. “Then I’ll go to Sudbury, in Canada, and from there again to America, and then I’ll send you the passport in the mail, and I’ll go back to using my own identity.”
“We don’t believe you,” Dov snapped sharply. “You are
way too manipulative for us to give you this passport, and we won’t take the chance that you’ll do what you want under our son’s name.”
“I thought you trusted me. Even after Kornblit’s visit, when he said I’m a troublemaker, you sounded much more…um…trusting of me.” Martin sounded insulted, not unlike a seven-year-old whose teacher had scolded him in front of the whole class, and used a bunch of derogatory words in the process.
“Either I made a mistake then, or I’m making a mistake now,” Dov replied, his arms folded and his eyes fixed on Martin. “In Judaism there is a concept of kabdeihu v’chashdeihu-‘respect him and suspect him’. For a long time, I’ve been keeping to the first part of the expression, but now you’ve made me remember the second half.” ***
Michoel pedaled the exercise bike heavily, laughing at his own poor fitness skills. It was alright; even with the gaps in his memory, he was certain that he’d never invested any time or energy into building up his muscles. Not when he was young, and not in later years either. Thinking about “later years” always made him uneasy, because his age kept confusing him. Sometimes, he was sure he wasn’t a day over forty, but sometimes he was convinced he’d celebrated far more birthdays than that.
Now it made no difference anymore. Yosef would come, they would get out of this place, and he’d be free to work on filling all those holes in his memory.
The gym instructor approached him. “Hi, Mr. Perl,” he said, in a heavy Southern accent. “How about trying to pick up speed?”
“I can try,” Michoel promised, and tried to pedal quicker. Someone came into the gym just then and made a beeline for the bike next to his. He climbed up, set the electronic speedometer, and began to pedal.
“Good morning, Mike,” Michoel greeted him breathlessly.
“Good morning to you,” the teen replied. “How is your nephew?”
“I hope he’s coming soon.” Michoel’s red face suddenly lit up. “His mother said that she was getting his medical files together, and she’d send them to me.”
“And you really mean it?”
“Mean what?” Michoel’s legs stopped moving. “Do you really think they’ll be able to cure him here?”
“Why not?” Michoel spoke cautiously, and he became even more cautious when he saw the instructor eyeing him from the other side of the room, probably because the bike had stopped moving. He started pedaling again.
“Good,” Mike said. “It’s better they don’t realize we’re talking.”
“Didn’t you want them to heal your sister here?”
“Well, they’ve been successful with anorexia,” Mike said. “I’m not the first one to recover. Or almost recover.”
“You’re still very thin.”
“That’s fine.” Mike waved his hand dismissively. “But schizophrenia?”
“You said there are a few people here who have it, and they’ve improved.”
“True, they look more stable. But I get the impression that they are taking medication, heavy medication, if you know what I mean.” He was quiet as he pedaled briskly.
Michoel continued pedaling at half Mike’s speed, looking at the large square clock that faced them. The blue digital numbers were moving steadily, and he waited for the hour to be up. The gym instructor threw the occasional comment to him about his slow pace, and the fact that maybe he should try other exercises, but Michoel sufficed with a nod and ignored him. Mike stopped before Michoel did. His legs slowed until the pedals fell silent. “Now I think,” he said, as he reset the digital screen, “that I don’t know how much I built on the fact that they’ll cure my sister, as much as the fact that I simply miss her.”
“So should I take you in my suitcase when I try to escape?”
“Are you really planning to try an escape?”
“I don’t know,” Michoel said, angry at himself for having blurted that out. “Not exactly escape. I want them to first cure my nephew. Then, at one point, I’ll go over and tell them I want to leave.”
Mike was already standing on the rubberized floor. “Good luck,” he said, and Michoel didn’t know if he was being cynical or serious.
“Can I use your phone later on, to see how my nephew is doing?”
“Fine,” Mike said as he walked off.
They met at supper, when Rob brought the regular bag of products he bought for them in the nearby Jewish community. They came into the dining room after most of the other patients had already finished eating. Michoel hardly knew anyone here besides Mike.
They ate quickly and quietly, and when they finished, they packed up whatever was left so they could have it tomorrow. Mike shook out the tablecloth, folded it, and put it on the shelf. Michoel stood at the door, waiting for him. “Oh, the phone…” Mike said uneasily when he joined him. “I don’t want them to see it. Let’s go downstairs.”
“Are you one of the only ones here who has a private phone?”
“Yes.”
“Why did they let you have it?”
“I don’t know; it wasn’t a question. I signed a form when I came stating that I’m not bringing in a smartphone, and that was it.”
“So why don’t any of the others get to have a phone?”
“Well, plenty of the patients don’t want a phone, because they believe that the connection with the outside world is harmful for them. And the Skulholts are more than happy about that, because they don’t trust that patients won’t give out needless information.”
“Like me,” Michoel said, as he took the phone. ***
“Oh, hi, Michoel…” his niece sounded a bit addled when she picked up. “Listen, we have a big problem with Yosef’s passport. I’m afraid he might not be able to come.”
“Please don’t tell me that. No, Hinda, no!” For the first time in his life, Michoel felt what it was like to have his knees tremble. And in order not to fall, he sat down on the grass right where he had been standing.

These children were also told that they will never be able to read. With mosaic’s help they have proven everyone wrong.
My 11 year old son was struggling to read. We sent him to many tutors but saw no improvement, and his anxiety and frustration was worsening each passing day. At first, he refused to go for any additional help, but 3 months ago he agreed to go to Mosaic since it is a fun and exciting program.
This past shabbos, I was delighted and pleasantly surprised to see him for the very first time relaxing on the couch while reading a book!
When Mosaic came onto the scene, I was eager to see how the Davis method would be implemented -- and I was not disappointed. The students who joined the program made progress almost immediately. We saw tremendous strides in their reading levels. As a result, their confidence and overall performance improved. They used their tools they were learning at Mosaic to help them across all subjects.
I would recommend Mosaic for the struggling student who hasn't responded to regular remediation.

Recap: Ahuva is put on the spot by an intimidating teacher and Tehilla helps her out by hinting the answer. Tehilla avoids walking home with Rachelli. Tehilla and Sara, her newfound friend, spend time together and sing Tehilla’s song. Mrs. Sternstein remembers hearing that Tehilla was related to the Zones and how it reinforced her belief that she had to put a stop to the friendship.
CHAPTER TWENTY TWO:
Laya Sternstein sat down in her armchair and flipped open a magazine. She sipped her hot drink, savoring the warmth that unfurled on top of her mug. The night hours were always peaceful, and she loved reading to unwind after a long day. She almost didn’t hear the door to her room open and her husband walk in.
“Hello!” Laya looked up.
“You’re home early. What happened?” A sudden alarm flashed across her face. “Is everything okay?”
Call it intuition, or just call it negative thinking, but her husband’s early homecoming didn’t sit well with her.
“Relax. I just wanted to come home earlier than usual and my learning partner agreed to learn on his own tonight.”
Laya set her mug on the floor near her. She leaned forward and her armchair creaked along with her. “What’s going on? Tell me.”
“Nothing. I mean…just a little something.”
Just a little something was her husband’s way of saying something life-altering. His eyes darted around the room, as if he was trying to push off this conversation. It sounded serious. And Laya had a feeling that she knew just what this was all about.
“I got a call today from the Tybergs. It’s been eleven years now. That’s a very long time for foster care.” Laya was silent.
“They have news. Great news. I mean, great news for them, and I am happy for them, really.”
“Just say it.” Laya picked up her mug and resumed sipping. The magazine lay limply on her lap.
“Okay. So after twenty years of waiting… the Tybergs decided to take the leap and make aliya! They’re waiting many years to have children, and they always wanted to live in Eretz Yisroel. Finally, everything fell into place and perhaps they will experience miracles there!” Chaim Sternstein was blabbering now. “I am so excited, this is great news. You know, it came perfect timing. I was never comfortable with Brocha in a stranger’s home. Now we have no choice but to take her home, of course.”
“And I was never really comfortable with the idea of prolonged foster care.” Laya’s heart was hardened. She was impossible to reason with when it came to this topic. “They should’ve adopted her. Then we wouldn’t have had this problem.”
“Problem?!” Chaim was incredulous. “I can’t believe that you are calling this a problem. Had they adopted her, what kind of care would she get after having three children join her? No, it was obviously meant to be. I really don’t want to find her another home.”
His voice took on a pleading note. “Laya, it’s been so many years now. I thought that you would make peace with this imperfect reality. I want to get to know my daughter. I want her home, right here, with us.”
Laya just stared at him coldly. She tried to appear indifferent, but her eyes shone with deep pain. “Chaim, I can’t believe that this is coming up again. It is time to find her a permanent home. Not ours. I can’t deal with this.” Her voice broke. “I think about Brocha every day. Every day, my heart breaks anew. I don’t think I can handle a reminder every day of what could’ve been.”
“It couldn’t have been.” Chaim sat down. “It couldn’t have been, because it wasn’t. Having Brocha so far away isn’t helping any of us. You still think about it every day and I miss her terribly. I think it’s time to really think this through again.”
He had waited over ten years for Brocha to
come home. He was so close to achieving his goal. But he was also so far away. ***
“Rachelli!” I tried to hide the surprise from my voice. “I mean, come in!” I moved aside for her to step in.
Rachelli was holding a jumbo peanut butter sundae. “OMG, you are the best!” I breathed. I blinked back sudden moisture in my eyes. I had missed this. It was hard to admit just how much friendship meant to me. It made the loss so much more painful.
Two minutes later, settled in my room, Rachelli was ready to talk. “Tehilla, I am not ready to give up on us. I want to explain. For real.”
I scooped a peanut butter cup off the sundae and gave a wan smile. “Go ahead.”
“My past and Ahuva’s are intertwined in a painful way. I thought that Ahuva knew that it was my father who drove the car on that day. I thought that Ahuva knew about her father’s misdemeanor in business. Turns out, she had no clue. But on that day in school, she just looked so lost. So alone.”
Rachelli twirled a lock of hair. “Also, I noticed something. It could be my imagination, but something tells me otherwise. Her hair.” At this, Rachelli clenched her fists and unclenched it before continuing. “It’s thinning out. It’s missing hair in some spots.”
“Ahuva’s pulling her hair out?” I put the sundae down on my desk. Despite the rift that stood between me and Ahuva, it was hard not to care about her.
“I am almost sure. But either way, she always looks so sad. So I reached out. And I wanted to clear the air, share my memories, or at least, what I heard about the fiasco growing up, just to make it less awkward for her. I mean, it could be that she would never consider being my friend! I mean, the whole thing is so complicated…”
“Why didn’t you tell me that before speaking to her?” My voice was hard. I swallowed a sudden blockage in my throat.
“Why? Firstly, it was an impulsive act, to call her over. Secondly, you weren’t in school that day. And thirdly, I don’t feel like I need to check in with you before speaking to someone!”
“She’s not just someone. She is my former friend, who made things super complicated by joining my class. I thought that you would be supportive, not the opposite.” My voice was hard.
“Are you being rational right now? Think it over, Tehilla. We have a new girl in the class. She looks so sad, so alone. Are you really suggesting that I should ignore her pain because that’s what works for your agenda? Is that the kind of person that you want to be?”
She was right. But I needed time to process it. “But now what? You become friends with her, and where does that leave me? If the answer is to join you two, rest assured, that is never happening. If the answer is to only speak to you when she is not around, then yes, your kindness is complicating things here for me.”
“Let’s just let it play itself out. Let it go, Tehilla. Take it day by day. Friendships don’t have to be planned and set in stone like that.” Rachelli looked at me. “And hey, you know that. I happen to have noticed you and Sara the other day…so sweet.” She gave a wicked grin.
I couldn’t help but laugh. “Hey…you…micro-manager friend! What business…” Suddenly, the hypocrisy of it all felt funny. I grabbed a pillow off my bed and aimed it on her face.
Giggling like little girls, we threw pillows and laughed some more.
For better or for worse, Rachelli was back. ***
“It will be for a month. Just try it.”
It had taken many hours of talking, two visits to their family Rav, and collaboration with Laya’s parents, for Chaim to get Laya on board. But it was happening. It wasn’t a permanent solution as he had hoped, but a trial period was all that Laya agreed to. For now, that was enough.
In one month from today, a plane would land in the JFK airport. In one month from today, his precious darling Brocha would be coming home.
Here, the sauna is hot, and the drinks are cold. The pool is wet, and the wine is dry. The challah is crispy, and the pillows are fluffy. Here, you come to listen and say, to laugh and cry, to forget and remember. Here is...

When you’re looking for a light but filling meal- fish is usually the first thing that comes to mind. Here we bring you some delicious new ideas to try. RECIPES, STYLING & PHOTOGRAPHY
Sometimes you need a no-fuss, filling sheet pan dinner to call it a day. Here’s a succulent, savory option to do just that.
Ingredients:
4-5 cups (28 oz bag) baby potatoes (cut in half)
1.5 lb. side of salmon
1 lemon, sliced
Dill Mayo Coating:
2 cups mayonnaise
1 tablespoon dijon mustard
1 tablespoon maple syrup or honey
3 cubes dill
2 cubes garlic
1 tablespoon parsley flakes
1 tablespoon dried rosemary (optional)
1 lemon, juiced
1 teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon black pepper
Directions:
1. Preheat oven to 400° and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
2. In a shallow bowl, combine the ingredients for the Dill Mayo Coating.
3. Spread the halved baby potatoes around the border of the baking sheet, in a single layer (leave room in the center for the salmon). Spoon half the coating over the potatoes and toss until fully coated. Tuck the lemon slices between the potatoes.
4. Bake for 20 minutes, or until fork tender.
5. Remove potatoes from the oven and lower temperature to 375°.
6. Place the side of salmon in the center of the sheet pan.
7. Smear about ¼ of the remaining Dill Mayo Coating onto the salmon until fully coated (coating should not be too thick). Save the rest of the Dill Mayo for serving.
8. Return the pan to the oven and bake at 375° for 30 minutes, until the salmon flakes easily. Serve with additional Dill Mayo. Enjoy!
Not entirely necessary but completely delicious.
Ingredients:
½ cup maple syrup
½ cup honey
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon black pepper
½ teaspoon smoked paprika
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon rosemary
Directions:
1. Combine all ingredients in a small saucepan.
2. Whisk together and cook over medium heat, bringing mixture to a boil. Stir frequently and cook for about 3 minutes.
3. Remove from heat and cool slightly before using.

Directions:
1. Wash the thawed filets and pat dry with paper towel. Cut each filet into thick strips (about 3 per filet) and set aside.
2. In a bowl, whisk together all the batter ingredients. In a separate bowl, prepare the breading mixture.
3. Dip each flounder strip into the batter, shake off excess, then dip into the breading mixture. Coat on both sides until fully covered.
4. Heat about ¼ cup oil in a pan for frying.
5. Fry the fish strips until golden, turning halfway through. Drain on paper towels.

Cauliflower is an underrated and versatile vegetable. I am not here to tell you to cut all carbs and replace it with cauliflower rice because, "it tastes the same" and, "no one will know." Please eat your carbs. And have your cauli, too. It's filling, nutrient dense, can take on so many flavor profiles, and is PARVE.
4 servings
INGREDIENTS

PREPARATION
◆ Preheat the oven (or toaster) to 400*
◆ Use 1 pan!
◆ Grease the bottom and sides of your 9x13 baking pan in butter or olive oil

At Fork and Bowl, our core philosophy is, fresh is better, and you won't catch frozen anything in our products, from garlic to herbs to fish.
Freshly checked cauliflower is now readily available at your local kosher supermarket, and feel free to reach out via email at Office@forkandbowlnyc.com, for a cauliflower retailer in your area.
However, if there's any place where frozen cauliflower can be substituted, it's here, as once baked, even the fresh cauliflower will soften. In a pinch, just defrost, allow to drain , squeeze remaining liquid with a paper towel, and cut baking time by 10 minutes.
PRO TIP: Use the rest of this dressing on a salad of lettuce, kale, carrots, tomatoes, croutons , parmesan cheese. Dinner done!
13 dressings and counting, made from scratch. Find yours at your local store. Salads are available at select locations upstate. 7182166931 orders@forkandbowlnyc.com @forkandbowl Enjoy #wholesomegoodness

Hello Dear Readers,
You can sign up to receive the weekly email blast of the Mortgage Corner by email, as well as interesting mortgage tidbits from time to time. mortgagecorner@themintcapital.com
This week we’ll explain The School Tax Relief (STAR) program. After purchasing a home, residents of New York State can apply for The New York School Tax Relief Credit, known as STAR credit, and save hundreds of dollars each year
What is the STAR credit?
The STAR Credit is a program that the government of New York initiated in 1998 The idea behind it is to help homeowners pay less money on their school taxes, which are a part of their property taxes. In 2016 the government modified the STAR program a bit Instead of taking money owed off of people's tax bills, they elected to send homeowners payment via check The check is for the identical amount of money that people would have saved on their taxes.
There are two types of STAR Credits, Basic STAR, and Enhanced STAR. On STAR Credit you will get savings on being reimbursed after payment While on enhanced STAR your savings is deducted directly on your tax bill
The Basic STAR credit is for people who live in their own home and make $500,000 or less per year for the credit, and $250,000 or less for the (this includes the income of both spouses) Note: you cannot apply for the exemption anymore, but you can restore it if you got it in 2015-2016 but lost the benefit later. There's no age limit for Basic STAR and no matter how old you are you will still receive the benefit.
The Enhanced STAR credit provides substantial help for older people. If you are 65 or older and live in your own home, you might be able to get the Enhanced STAR credit This credit is generally more money than the Basic STAR credit
You do not need to re-register for STAR once you were previously approved for the STAR credit, but if you buy a new home, the exemption is not transferred automatically You will have to apply for the exemption on your new primary residence.
If you purchased your primary residence home before the date the school tax is due, you already qualify for that year.
Trusts
If you are a trust beneficiary who conveyed your home to tr you are still living in your home, you can still receive the STA
How to apply
You can apply online www.tax.ny.gov/star and fill out the ap or by calling (518) 457-2036 it is usually a quick process.
We are going to take a summer break, we look forward to continue after the summer.

Iwant to share this story with your wide readership since I know firsthand how much chizuk the Smartvoice column provides. It’s not much of a story, but I believe that this anecdote provides clarity and perspective that may be helpful to others.
My name is Yanky and I work in the distribution line. I deal with a wide variety of business owners who choose to distribute their goods through our company. One large firm that fills a niche in the clothing industry has been a loyal customer for many years. I made the acquaintance of the business-owner, a confident and savvy Sephardic Yid, and we got along famously. Eli used his Smartphone for work and we never discussed it. This was just part and parcel of Eli’s life.
Recently, I met Eli to iron out some technicalities, and I was surprised to see him using a flip-phone.
“Eli, what’s the story?” I asked him, comfortable enough to be honest and open. “When did you make the switch to this kosher phone?”
Eli smiled, not in the least bit offended by my curiosity. He actually seemed eager to share the details.
“Yup, I actually did it,” he grinned. “I gave up my Smartphone, and my wife did the same, following a passionate lecture by one of the Sephardic Gedolim.”
I clapped him on the shoulder and complimented him on a step that couldn’t have been too easy.
“It’s all good,” Eli said. “It was an adjustment, but after the initial challenge it’s been quite smooth.” He fell silent for a moment, and then added, “My wife is still adjusting to the change. The apps and the social media groups are gone for good. But it’s the pictures that are a problem.”
“The pictures?” I wondered. “Which pictures?”
“We used our Smartphones like a camera,” Eli explained. “Whenever the kids did or said something cute, we just snapped a picture. The device was always there and snapping pictures couldn’t be simpler. Now, it’s a whole production. If she wants to catch my son in a funny moment, she has to go find the camera… We don’t get that many photos anymore.”
He had a valid point, but I figured that a broader perspective might help him adjust more easily. “Eli, let’s say it as it is,” I said. “You want clips and pictures of your children, right? You want pictures of ehrliche children who follow in your ways and make you – and Hashem – proud.”
“Of course,” Eli nodded.
“Maybe you’ll get less photos without the handy device that’s always available, but each picture will be a testimony to an ehrliche child from an ehrliche home,” I explained.
Eli smiled. “Less photos, more substance, huh? I’d say it’s definitely a worthwhile exchange.”

Unscramble the circled letters to discover the "LINK" to Devarim! A special gift to make things right, Can turn our sins from red to white....
The Baal Shem Tov often accomplished a lot during his Davening. One Shabbos morning, the Baal Shem Tov repeated one Kapital over and over again.
Later that day, he explained to his Chassidim that there was a yiddishe peddler who had not managed to arrive home before Shabbos. He was spending Shabbos alone in the forest. A bandit had discovered him and was planning to rob and kill him.
"However," continued the Baal Shem Tov, "when I repeated those words of Tehillim, the robber lost his way, and the Yid was saved."

The Florida Highway Patrol said it was "not an ap-peeling situation" when a semi-truck hauling a load of bananas caught fire on a highway. They said the truck caught fire as a result of a mechanical issue about 3 a.m. on Friday. Troopers said the driver was able to pull the truck over to the shoulder and stop. No injuries were reported, and cleanup crews were summoned to remove the truck and scorched bananas.

we encounter many insects that we usually do not interact with at home. The most common are Bees, Mosquitos, Ticks, and bed bugs. They might cause itching, swelling and stinging that goes away in a day or two. Some bites or stings can transmit disease-causing bacteria, viruses or parasites. Stings from bees, yellow jackets, wasps, hornets and fire ants might cause a severe allergic

researchers $7.2 million to turn plastic waste into protein powder, again using microorganisms.
While DARPA is supposedly focusing on turning toxic plastics into “food” for the U.S. military, considering we’re now in an era where synthetic, lab-created meat is valued over regeneratively grown real meat, it’s not farfetched to imagine that the next step will be plastic-derived food for all.
One of the selling points that got the world hooked on plastic was that it could be recycled. As reported by NPR in September 2020:
“Laura Leebrick, a manager at Rogue Disposal & Recycling in southern Oregon, is standing on the end of its landfill watching an avalanche of plastic trash pour out of a semitrailer ... None of this plastic will be turned into new plastic things. All of it is buried ...
But when Leebrick tried to tell people the truth ... people didn't want to hear it. ‘I remember the first meeting where I actually told a city council that it was costing more to recycle than it was to dispose of the same material as garbage,’ she says, ‘and it was like heresy had been spoken in the room: You're lying. This is gold. We take the time to clean it, take the labels off, separate it and put it here. It's gold. This is valuable.’
But it's not valuable, and it never has been. And what's more, the makers of plastic — the nation's largest oil and gas companies — have known this all along NPR and PBS Frontline spent months digging into internal industry documents and interviewing top former officials. We found that the industry sold the public on an idea it knew wouldn't work — that the majority of plastic could be, and would be, recycled — all while making billions of dollars selling the world new plastic ...
[T]he industry spent millions telling people to recycle, because, as one former top industry insider told NPR, selling recycling sold plastic, even if it wasn't true ... Documents show industry officials knew this reality about recycling
plastic as far back as the 1970s.”
Since the earliest days of recycling, less than 10% of the plastic produced has ever been recycled, but you wouldn’t know that based on what the industry has said due to their highly effective propaganda campaigns based on absolute fraud.
In the late 1980s, the reality of plastic waste was becoming known and the public was expressing concerns about the environmental impact. Legislators were considering bans on the use of plastics. The plastic industry was in turmoil, trying to figure out how to stay in business as plastic was getting a bad rap.
The solution they came up with was, as usual, propaganda. In 1989, the plastics industry launched a $50 million-a-year ad campaign to promote the alleged benefits of plastic.
That same year, the industry also launched several feel-good recycling projects. “It funded sorting machines, recycling centers, nonprofits, even expensive benches outside grocery stores made out of plastic bags,” NPR writes, but by the mid-1990s, all of these projects had failed and been shuttered due to economics.
Recycling was simply too expensive. It’s far cheaper to make new things and bury the old. Over time, public concern mellowed and vanished. According to one trade group official, it seemed “the message that plastic could be recycled was sinking in.” The industry crisis passed.
In the early 1990s, the industry started lobbying states to mandate recycling symbols on all plastic products. Environmentalists who supported this plan were under the impression that it would help consumers separate the plastic, thereby making recycling a bit more affordable.
There are hundreds of plastics and they cannot be processed together. Some cannot be recycled at all. The recycling symbols were supposed to
make separation easier, but all it did was confuse consumers into thinking that ALL plastic with a symbol could be recycled, thereby making matters worse.
Recyclers ended up with tons of unrecyclable plastics thrown in. Not only did they now have to spend more money on sorting, but getting rid of the unrecyclable plastic also ate into their already negligible profits. While this end result might not have been intentional, the plastics industry certainly was aware that it hurt the recycling industry more than anything.
In a 1993 report, a D.C. lobbying group flatly admitted the codes were being misused. “Companies are using it as a 'green' marketing tool,” the report said. In short, the industry knew the codes printed on the bottom would mislead consumers into thinking all plastic was recyclable, as virtually no one took the time to memorize each code.
It can be extraordinarily difficult to avoid plastic, considering most food and consumer goods are enshrined in plastic packaging. However, you can certainly minimize your dependency on these products. For example, consider:
Opting for products sold in glass containers rather than plastic whenever possible.
Looking for plastic-free alternatives to common items such as toys and toothbrushes.
Choosing reusable over single-use — This includes cloth diapers, glass bottles for your beverages, cloth grocery bags, handkerchiefs instead of paper tissues, and using an old T-shirt or rags in lieu of paper towels.
Drinking filtered tap water rather than bottled water, and bringing your own refillable bottles when going out.
Buying glass food storage containers rather than plastic ones.
Bringing your own reusable cloth shopping bags.
Skipping the plastic cutlery and using your own silverware when buying takeout.
water laced with particles of polystyrene — a type of plastic that’s common in food packaging such as yogurt cups and Styrofoam takeout containers.
Using computer models to track the dispersion of the plastics, researchers found that nanoplastic particles — which are under 0.001 millimeters and invisible to the naked eye — were able to travel into the mice’s brains via a previously unknown biological ‘transport mechanism.’
Essentially, these tiny plastics are absorbed into cholesterol molecules on the brain membrane surface. Thus stowed away in their little lipid packages, they cross the blood-brain-barrier — a wall of blood vessels and tissue that functions to protect the brain from toxins and other harmful substances.”
Other studies have demonstrated that inhaled plastic can enter your brain as well. For example, a Chinese study published in January 2022 concluded that inhaled plastic was associated with “obvious neurotoxicity.”
More specifically, the plastic nanoparticles reduced function of brain enzymes known to malfunction in Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s patients. As such, inhaled plastic may contribute to or exacerbate these conditions.
Your health, including the function of your brain, is also largely dependent on your gut health and the function of your mitochondria, and plastic wreaks havoc there as well.
A January 2023 study from Finland found that high doses of microsized polyethylene decreased cell viability and increased production of harmful reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the mitochondria, which is where most of your body’s energy is produced.
In 2022, Dutch scientists confirmed the presence of microplastics in meat, milk and the blood of both farm animals and humans. In all, nearly 80% of meat and dairy products tested were found to contain microplastics, including 18 in 25 milk samples. As reported by the Plastic Soup Foundation, which commissioned the testing:
“The possible cause could be the
feed of cows and animals: all 12 samples of feed pellets and shredded feed were found to contain plastic ... Maria Westerbos, director of Plastic Soup Foundation, said, ‘This study raises serious concerns about the contamination of our food chain with microplastics.
It is also clear that farmers are not responsible for this. It seems that at least part of the former food products, including from supermarkets, are processed into livestock feed with packaging and all ...
The European Animal Nutrition Regulation prohibits the addition of ‘packaging and parts of packaging derived from the use of food industry products.’ This regulation should be enforced, according to Plastic Soup Foundation.
However, the Dutch Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA) uses a so-called Reference Point of Action; contamination below 0.15% is tolerated.”
The very idea that food scraps used to make animal feed would be processed with plastic food packaging left on is shocking beyond belief. Who in their right mind would think of doing such a thing? Yet apparently, that is happening, and is common enough that the EU has regulations for it.
In the study above, 100% of swine and cows had microplastics in their blood. In humans, plastic particles have been found in the blood of 77% of people tested. The mean concentration of plastic particles in the blood was 1.6 µg/ ml.
Some of the blood samples contained up to three different types of plastic; steel syringe needles and glass tubes were used so no plastic would be introduced to the samples. Of the 17 samples in which plastic particles were detected:
· Half contained polyethylene terephthalate (PET) plastic, which is used to make plastic water and soda bottles
· One-third contained polystyrene, widely used in food packaging
· One-quarter contained polyethylene, which is used to make plastic bags
According to Australian research, the average person consumes about 5 grams of plastic per week — about the amount found in one credit card — so we’re not even talking about minuscule amounts anymore. Clearly, the potential for catastrophic biological consequences for humans is growing with every discarded piece of plastic.
Many plasticizing chemicals are similar in structure to natural hormones. As such, they interfere with development, reproduction, neurological functioning, metabolism, satiety, and immune function, and for many of these chemicals, there may be no safe level of exposure.
As if the situation weren’t dire enough, in September 2020, the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) has awarded Iowa State University and partners a $2.7 million grant to create a process that would make FOOD from plastic and paper waste!
The intention is to use this to feed the military men and women who have dedicated their lives to defending this country. They believe the ability to turn paper and plastic waste products into consumables could help with short-term “nourishment” and improve military logistics for extended missions.
They estimate the total award could reach $7.8 million before the project ends. Other partners in this project include the University of Delaware, Sandia National Laboratories, and the American Institute of Chemical Engineering (AIChE)/RAPID Institute.
Basically, what they’re trying to do is convert plastic waste into fatty alcohols and fatty acids, while paper waste will be turned into sugar. These base ingredients will then be bioprocessed by single-cell organisms into an, allegedly, edible mass that is rich in protein and vitamins.
In other words, the hope is that microorganisms can convert the endocrine-disrupting chemicals found in plastic into essential vitamins and proteins. I don’t know about you, but this sounds like a beyond terrible idea. DARPA has also awarded Michigan Tech

· Discarded plastics make up 18.5% of landfills and 90% of all trash entering the world’s oceans. Estimates suggest that by 2050, our oceans will contain more plastic than fish by weight. In some ocean waters, plastic already exceeded plankton by a factor of 6-to-1 in 2006
· Recent animal research found plastic particles in mice’s brains just two hours after the animals ingested drinking water containing microplastics
· Scientists suspect microplastic contamination in our brains may cause cognitive impairment, neurotoxicity and altered neurotransmitter levels, which can contribute to behavioral changes
· Similarly, a Chinese study published in January 2022 concluded that inhaled plastic was associated with “obvious neurotoxicity”
· The plastics industry sold consumers on the idea that plastic was recyclable and therefore sustainable even though they knew it was financially unfeasible. Consumers were also deceived by the addition of recycling codes on plastic products. The code makes it seem as though all plastic is recyclable, which isn’t true
We live in a throwaway society, and products intended for shortterm consumption are packaged in materials that will survive for centuries. Discarded plastics make up 18.5% of landfills and 90% of all trash entering the world’s oceans.
At the rate we’re going, estimates suggest that by 2050, our oceans will contain more plastic than fish by weight. In some ocean waters, plastic already exceeded plankton by a factor of 6-to-1 in 2006.
The problem with plastic is that it doesn’t biodegrade; it photodegrades, which takes hundreds of years. Researchers estimate a single plastic coffee pod may take up to 500 years, the duration of the Roman Empire. Even as it breaks down, it doesn’t completely vanish. Instead, it turns into tiny plastic particles, commonly referred to as “nurdles,” which act like sponges for toxic chemicals.
These particles are routinely consumed by filter feeders in the ocean, slowly poisoning them and causing blockages. As these filter feeders are consumed by larger creatures, the toxins move up the food chain, ultimately ending up in our own bodies. Plastic chemicals also enter our bodies through other routes, including drinking water.
As reported in the media on May 1, 2023:
“Researchers at the University of Vienna have discovered particles of plastic in mice’s brains just two hours after the mice ingested drinking water containing plastic. Once in the brain, ‘Plastic particles could increase the risk of inflammation, neurological disorders or even neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s,’ Lukas Kenner, one of the researchers, said in a statement ...
[The] researchers also believe that microplastic contamination in our brains can cause short-term health effects such as cognitive impairment, neurotoxicity and altered neurotransmitter levels, which can contribute to behavioral changes. The team gave mice
My eyes stray to the clock. There’s only a little more than two hours to the zman, so there’s nothing practical to do right now in any case. All I can do is offer Esty more sincere sympathy.
“Please call and keep me updated,” I say. “You’ll see, things will be better next week. The first week of camp is always hard, but usually it settles down and things get figured out more afterwards.”
Esty listens quietly. I doubt I’ve convinced her. Dassy comes to get her phone back, and Esty wishes me good Shabbos. “Oh, and thanks for the rugelach, Ma,” she says.
“Have a wonderful Shabbos. Enjoy them,” I say wistfully. How I wish she was home with me for Shabbos. How I wish I could kiss all her boo-boos away like I did when she was two years old. ***
After licht tzinden is always Mommy and Esty time. We snuggle up on the couch and say Lecha Dodi, then we schmooze or read until it’s time to prepare the seudah.
Now the house echoes the quiet as soon as Heshy leaves, and it’s just me. Soon some of the marrieds will be coming for the seuda, but for now I still have the house to myself.
I remember my conversation with Miri, and once again notice how much I take Esty’s presence for granted. I’m definitely going to appreciate her more when she comes home from camp.
As I say the tefillos for after hadlakas neiros, I stop to think about each of my children. Eli, who I davened so hard for, and is now doing so well, Baruch Hashem. That’s not a reason to stop davening, though. In the glow of the candles, I daven for his continued success.
With Esty’s camp struggles uppermost in my mind, I whisper some extra tefillos for her sake. Let her be happy in camp, let her learn from this and only grow, and not get pulled down.
As I’m about to close my siddur, I stop. What about Motty? I take his happiness for granted, his success in learning and winning friends as a given.
It is a given, given as a gift. There’s no reason to only appreciate something once you don’t have it.
So, before I close my siddur, I murmur thanks. For Motty’s achievements so far. And I add a little prayer for him to continue in this way. •

of the line. She’s so little, my baby. I can’t believe she’s already in camp for almost a whole week, all by herself.
Esty’s my darling, the girl who’s always surrounded by friends because she’s so easygoing and fun to be with. She counted down the days to camp, and she didn’t look one bit nervous as she waved goodbye. I’m sure she’s having the time of her life. Esty’s one of the most popular girls in her class, with loads of friends always surrounding her. Plus, she plays guitar like a dream. I’m sure she’s made lots of new friends too.
I check the clock again. Three hours to Shabbos. I’m sure Esty won’t forget to call. She’s a good girl, Esty, she wouldn’t skip calling her parents. A tiny worm of nervousness slithers in my stomach. I hope everything’s okay.
The long-awaited phone call finally comes, and my heart jumps.
“Hello!” I say, infusing as much of my warmth and concern as I can into that one word.
“Hi, Mommy,” Esty says cautiously. “Sorry I’m calling so late, I wanted to use Dassy’s phone instead of calling from the pay phones.”
“That was a good idea,” I say automatically. Dassy is my sister’s daughter, a staff member at Esty’s camp.
“It just took a while because so many other girls wanted to use her phone,” Esty explains. “But by the pay phones, everyone listens in to your conversation, there’s like, no privacy.” Suddenly, my senses are on alert. What did my easygoing girl need her privacy so badly for?
“What’s going on, Esty?” I ask. “Is everything okay?”
“Not really,” Esty admits, and her musical voice is edged with a sob. “Mommy, I hate my bunk. It’s the worst bunk in the entire age group. And the only friend they put me with is Leah. Everyone else is in a different bunk, the best bunk, and they’re having the time of their lives. Only me and Leah are stuck in this awful bunk.”
“Oh, that’s so hard,” I say sympathetically, my heart taking a dive to the floor.
“I tried to talk to the director to switch my bunk,” Esty continues talking, and I can tell she’s happy to finally get everything off her chest, “but she said no way, there’s no switching bunks, especially because I have
one preference. Even though she’s also miserable.”
“That’s such a pity, being miserable in camp,” I say. Years of coaching my older daughters through camp rush through my mind. Homesickness, friend politics, I’ve seen it all. Somehow, I thought Esty’s experience would be easier, since she’s so easygoing and was going with so many friends. But apparently there’s always an adjustment to be made.
“I know,” Esty says, and the sob is back in her voice. “But Ma, you know, it’s not just girls that are not my type. They’re really, um, girls I don’t want to be around. It’s two groups of friends, and one group is really snobby, and they make fun of everything the camp does. And the other one does crazy things that are totally against the rules. And only me and Leah actually do any of the camp’s activities. It’s so not fun. Then, at night, we go to the room with all my friends, and they’re having a party. Why can’t I be with them?”
I don’t know what to say. Esty’s pain cuts me deeply. She deserves to have the most amazing summer ever. My first instinct is to call the camp director to demand that Esty’s bunk be changed, but I control myself. It’s better for Esty to learn to deal with her challenges.
“Can you spend more time with your friends between activities?” I ask. “Or make friends with some of the girls in your bunk?”
“They don’t let us leave our bunk,” Esty says. “Every time we try, we get yelled at. And Mommy, you wouldn’t want me to be friends with these girls in my bunk.”
She sketches in a few words some of the illegal activities her bunkmates have been doing, and I’m horrified.
“That’s it,” I say. “I’m calling the camp director. You can’t be in a bunk with such girls. They’re simply a bad influence.”
“No!” Esty says, and her vehemence shocks me. “Please don’t tell anyone what I told you. They’re all going to realize that it was me, and they’ll never leave me alone about it. Please don’t call, Mommy.”
I pause, feeling so stuck and helpless. Is there nothing I can do to help my daughter? I don’t want to hurt her even more. It’s true that I don’t approve of these girls’ shady activities, but they aren’t doing anything dangerous. What, really, is the right thing for me to do now?
needed all the tefillos he could get to grow up a healthy adult.
Esty and Motty were uncomplicated kids, but Eli was a different story entirely. Until he was safely out of adolescence, I would still be holding my breath.
“Hi Mommy!” Miri’s cheerful greeting reverberated through the phone. “How are you enjoying your peace and quiet?”
“I really can’t get used to it,” I admit to my oldest daughter. “I never even noticed how much noise Esty brings home with all her friends and her music. All of a sudden, the house feels so empty.”
“Really? That’s funny, because everyone’s out all day in school a whole year also,” Miri remarked. I could hear her newborn whimpering in the background. Miri’s house was only getting noisier these days.
“I know, but somehow, they keep me plenty busy when they’re home,” I chuckle ruefully.
“I guess this is what empty-nest syndrome comes from. Too much of your own thoughts for company.”
“Oh, Ma, you’re way too young to have a mid-life crisis!” Miri protests.
“Especially since Esty’s only thirteen,” I acknowledge. “But you know, yesterday I was in the middle of baking rugelach, I thought I would send some to camp. And I ran out of cocoa. I was thinking, okay, Esty will be happy to run to get some more from the corner, but guess what? Esty’s not home! I left my rugelach dough on the counter, changed into a sheitel, and actually had to go to the grocery myself.” I turn on the flame under the onions, and chuckle. “I guess I take Esty a little bit for granted. Next time I speak to her, I’ll have to tell her how much I’m missing her help!”
“Yeah, we take a lot of things for granted,” Miri agrees. “That’s why I’m totally planning a vacation. Nothing like a day away from my kids so I get to appreciate them more, right?”
“Of course,” I say, and immediately switch into Bubby-mode. “So, when am I babysitting the kiddos?” ***
“Hello!” Heshy booms from the front hallway.
“Good morning,” I say as I swipe the scrambled eggs onto a plate. I look up suspiciously at his grinning entrance.
“Don’t tell me one of the boys called you
already!” I exclaim. What else could put him in such a good mood early Friday morning?
“Nope,” Heshy says. “Even better. Guess again!”
“Tell me,” I beg in suspense.
“Eli’s counselor called me just now. And he gave me a wonderful nachas report on Eli’s behavior so far. He sounds delighted with him.”
I let out my breath in a whoosh. “Wow! You mean it?” I’m amazed. That’s more than anything I could have hoped for.
Heshy nods. “He sounds like a really good guy. I’m happy Eli has him.”
My eyes are suspiciously moist as I busy myself cutting up some veggies. “Wow,” I say again.
“What a Yiddishe Mama’s tefillos can do…” Heshy teases me. He knows how worried I’ve been about Eli.
I smile sheepishly. “This Yiddishe Mama is still going to wait to hear it straight from her child’s mouth. I hope they don’t all call right before Shabbos.”
Heshy washes and sits down. “Don’t be too disappointed if they don’t call at all,” he warns. “It’s hard to get to a phone on Friday.” I purse my lips. Of course, I’ll be disappointed if any of my children miss the Erev Shabbos phone call. I’ve been waiting all week for this! But apparently, the rugelach I sent up last night do wonders. Both Eli and Motty call right after Shacharis, explaining that that’s when the phones are still empty.
"He sounds so happy," I exult to Heshy after hanging up with Eli. “It’s amazing what the right environment can do for a child! This camp really knows what they’re doing.”
“Motty also sounded really happy,” Heshy says. “A total of five minutes of conversation, where he just said that everything’s great and his learning is going geshmak. But I could hear from his voice how much he’s enjoying himself. It’s an amazing thing what some country air can do for a bachur.”
“Yes, Motty is a special boy,” I say proudly. “I’m sure he’s doing well.” ***
I still have one third of my heart coiled like a spring until the third phone call comes through. I’m waiting for the phone to ring with Esty’s lilting voice at the other end
It was when I came home from grocery shopping that it really hit me.
I was about to call out, “Esty! Can you come help me shlep this stuff up?” when I heard the quietness, and I remembered that Esty was currently a three-hour’s drive away by car. My youngest daughter was off in camp partying it up with her friends.
And her poor old mom was stuck with lots of shopping bags to bring up two flights of steps all by her own creaking bones.
I smiled ruefully as I dropped the bags on the bottom step. Maybe I’d leave them for my husband to bring up later, then.
Trudging up the stairs and idly picturing supper menus, I reminded myself to downsize my cooking. With all my supper-eaters up in the mountains, there wouldn’t be anyone to eat up
the leftovers. Hopefully, Eli and Motty weren’t missing their mom’s suppers too much.
As I dumped down my pocketbook and changed into my slippers, thoughts of my youngest children in camp lingered. Beyond a perfunctory first-day phone call to let me know they were still alive, I hadn’t heard from any of my kids the last few days. And while I believed that no news was good news, I couldn’t help but worry.
Especially about Eli, my sensitive second-toyoungest. For all his inner fragility, he presented a tough façade to the world, and authorities didn’t always know how to handle him. Last year’s camp experience had not been fun.
He was in a new camp this year, and I’d fretted for so many hours hoping it would all work out. His bunk, his learning counselor, his friends…I murmured another quick kapitel Tehillim as I pulled some onions from the fridge. That boy
