Recap: Pori realizes that her sister Ahuva started tearing out her hair (trichotillomania). Chava tries to connect with her daughter unsuccessfully. Rachelli tells Tehilla that she has something important to tell her that has to do with Tehilla's former friend, Ahuva.
Years ago, my mother read a poem aloud, unaware of the little ears that were listening in. I must’ve been around seven or eight years old, I couldn’t remember exactly. It went something like, I loved my friend. She went away from me. There’s nothing more to say, this poems ends, softly as it began. I loved my friend. My mother was discussing this concept with one of her friends, and her conversations tended to be long and philosophical- especially when they discussed literature.
I had made myself comfortable on the kitchen table, coloring a large picture of Strawberry Shortcake, when I heard my mother read the poem. I remembered that sad feeling, just thinking about losing a best friend.
It was strange, the way these random memories popped up, seemingly out of nowhere. It was so incongruent; I was picturing myself as a little girl overhearing a poem. I understood exactly why this memory had just resurfaced.
Despite everything that I had experienced, this old sadness was rising within me, just in time to understand that the poem was happening to me, yet again, once more. The story of my life.
“Please,” Rachelli begged, eyes shining with unshed tears. “Please give me the benefit of the doubt. Please, Tehilla, listen to my story.” I looked at her. “Why wouldn’t I listen?”
Rachelli hesitated and then answered, “Because I don’t want you to do to me what you did to Ahuva.”
My eyes began flashing. Before I could even open my mouth, Rachelli quickly said, “You know what, Tehilla? Let’s walk. It’s a bit
nippy out there, but this conversation should be private. And my room doesn’t feel private anymore, know what I mean?”
I knew exactly what she meant, and deep down, I felt that same old thrill of having a friend who truly understood me. Of course, I knew what she meant, we didn’t only think alike, we also tended to feel alike.
Walking down Ocean Parkway, I allowed Rachelli to speak. The story that she told me wasn’t anything that I could’ve thought up of on my own. Knowing Rachelli’s lack of imagination and creativity in general, the story just had to be true.
“This story happened many years ago,” she began. “You know, it’s funny that this never came up before, but we never discussed where my parents are from.”
I knew the answer before she said it. “My parents are originally from Los Angeles, a wonderful, frum community.”
There. She said it. So was Ahuva’s family. She had joined my class in fifth grade, a new student, straight from Los Angeles, randomly planted in NY. For unknown reasons, or at least unknown to me, her family needed to make a sudden move to Brooklyn.
“My paternal grandparents are pretty typical people,” Rachelli explained. “Simple, chilled, happy with whatever they had. But my father, he wanted more. He always wanted more. He dreamed of opening a Kosher supermarket that would eventually have branches all over the world. I know that this sounds like a child’s dream, but it wasn’t. My father really meant it. He didn’t just talk, he really had practical plans in place.”
Despite myself, I couldn’t help but interrupt. “How old were you when your father planned all of this? And what does this have to do with me, you, or Ahuva?”
“I was young. Maybe one or two years old.” Ignoring the second part of my question, Rachelli went on with her story. “The day arrived. I don’t think that my grandparents ever believed that it would, but against all
odds, it did. My father’s store opened and was an instant hit. I don’t know what it was, he just had what it took. He collaborated, brainstormed, and did everything possible to make the shopping experience a customer’s dream. And it was. For five years, he was unusually successful.”
“So you were seven years old when the trouble started?” I was starting to get bored and wanted to predict the ending to face the inevitable conclusion that somehow involved me.
“Probably. It started off innocently enough. A Mr. Sternstein called my father and introduced himself as an expert marketer. He offered to market our grocery store and help my father launch a new branch in a different neighborhood in L.A. It was my father’s dream. He thought that he would have to wait many years for that dream to happen, but here, he had a ready investor! Not only that, an investor who was willing to do the marketing as well!”
By now, we had reached my house. The sky was darkening, and soon, my mother would start to worry. “Rachelli, I feel like you are telling me things. But you are trying to avoid the main point. Just cut to the chase and tell me: This can’t be about your father’s grocery story in L.A., and this cannot possibly be about Ahuva’s father wanting to join your father’s business.”
“But it is,” Rachelli’s face shone under the pale light of the streetlamp we stood in front of. “Don’t you see, Tehilla,” her voice shook. “All along, you thought that it was Ahuva who was out to destroy you. It wasn’t her. It is way, way worse. The story is much more complicated than you think.”
The streetlamp made Rachelli’s eyes look like it had a crazed glare. A shiver ran through my body. A black cat scampered into an alleyway. A police car zoomed by. But all I could do was stare at my best friend in shock.
“If you don’t stop talking in riddles…” I started to cry. Tears ran down my cheeks, and I made no attempt to hide it. A wave of dizziness overtook me, and I grasped the lamplight’s pole for support.

“You know what? I…I..I am not feeling so good. I can’t listen to this. Please, just stop. Stop it. I don’t need to know this. I don’t want to know all of this.” I shakily began to walk away.
“I knew it,” Rachelli’s voice sounded like a low hiss. “I knew that you wouldn’t even let me finish the story.” She watched my receding back, slowly making my way up the steps to my house. I felt her eyes bore holes through my back as I punched in the combination and banged the door open. When I turned around to close the door, she was gone. ***
“You have got to get help.”
Ahuva played with the hair in her hands. “I don’t need help.”
“That’s what all people say- especially the ones that need help.” Pori pointed to the strands of hair on the night chest between them. “There is nothing normal about this.”
“You wouldn’t dare tell Mom.” Ahuva’s voice was strained.
“How long do you think it will take until she notices on her own?”
“You know what, Pori?” Ahuva waved the hair mockingly in front of Pori’s face. “Time will tell. Let’s see how long it will take. Let’s discover how long it will take for a mother to notice her daughter.”
“Your anger is misplaced, Ahuva, and you know that.” Pori sighed. This was an old argument, a little over three years old by now. Ahuva simply couldn’t get that conversation out of her mind. Since she overheard her parents discussing Tehilla’s downward spiral, she was convinced that her parents had played a part in the rumors that circulated about Tehilla.
“Pori, please, I am begging you. For once, can you just stay out of this?” The room was quiet. The large clock ticked silently, willing one of them to speak.
“Maybe you can speak to Abba,” Pori suggested. “When? Before the mystery business trips, during, or after his late night hours?” Ahuva didn’t mean to sound so bitter. She was
surprised herself, how much she really cared. “For goodness sake, I don’t even know what my own father does for a living!”
Pori looked down. She sat down heavily on Ahuva’s bed, and the bed creaked under her weight. Softly placing her hands around her shoulder, she said, “And why do you care?”
“You know, don’t you? That’s why you don’t care.”
“You are sixteen, Huvs. I agree, it is pretty strange not to know why your father constantly needs to fly out for business trips. But I have to tell you something, something that isn’t my news to share.”
“You mean, we have a secret? A family secret?” Ahuva felt her heart start to race.
“It happened sometime after you were born,” Pori said.
“What’s it?” Ahuva nearly screamed, her heart racing faster and faster. “What don’t I know about my own life, my own family? What are you keeping from me?”
“Huvs, calm down!” Pori grabbed her sister’s shoulders and looked scared. “You are lucky Mom’s not home. The neighbors are going to get nervous if you start shouting like that.”
“I wasn’t shouting.” Ahuva twirled a lock of hair, and gently pulled out the lock. Pori gasped, and Ahuva did, too. Right on her forehead, Ahuva had just created a shiny, bald spot. Whether she liked it or not, her secret would be out.
“Okay, we are going to do something.” Pori reached for her cellphone. “We need to get a trusted adult involved. This is not okay.”
“Fine. I agree. I agree to get professional help. On one condition. I need to know the secret. Something tells me that the secret is huge.”
“Listen. Whether you like it or not, help is on the way. Mom will be home soon, and there is no way that you can hide this.” Pori pointed to the bald spot. “Also, there is no way that I would let you suffer like this. There is help and you will get it. Regarding the secret, Mom will never forgive me for this, but,” Pori popped open the heart shaped necklace that she always
wore around her neck.
Framed by a thin gold heart, two little girls smiled right up at Ahuva. One was Pori, and it looked like she was around thirteen years old in the picture. The other girl looked vaguely familiar, but Ahuva couldn’t place her. She looked a little closer. The girl’s eyes were green, just like hers. Her hair was blonde, but the curls had the same bounce that her hair had.
After looking long and hard, she whispered, “She looks like me, this girl. Pori, who is she?” A horrible vortex of fear closed in on her throat. “I have a bad feeling about this.” She held her heart in her hands as she whispered, “It’s our sister, isn’t it? She has to be related to us.”
“She was born less than a year after you,” Pori whispered, her voice choked. “She was a beautiful girl, a wonderful girl.”
“Was?” Ahuva hands began to shake violently. The room spun around her as Pori quickly ran to get a cup of cold water. “Relax. She is still alive.”
“W..ww..hat? Please tell me that this is a bad dream.”
“Her name was Brocha. One day, there was an accident. It affected her brain.”
“Where is she? What? I don’t believe you!” Deep down, Ahuva did believe her. So many things made sense now: her father’s constant “business trips”, the cloud of sadness in her mother’s eyes that she never really spoke about, the family’s sudden move to Brooklyn…
“She is well taken care of. Mom was younger then. She couldn’t do it. Please understand her,” Pori begged, “Or at least don’t judge. You were young. I was a bit older. Brocha was severely damaged, and the doctors weren’t even sure if she would make it. But she did make it. It was Mom who almost didn’t make it.”
“She couldn’t handle the stress,” I whispered, awed by the revelation that was unfolding.
“I just wanted you girls to have a normal life.”
Pori and Ahuva swung around, and before anyone was able to say anything, the three of them began to cry. For a long time, they stood there, the tears flowing like an endless river, with no words necessary to explain the depth of their pain.
“It was like something had clicked in my son’s brain! Mr. Weiss seemed to have
him… My husband could finally talk and learn with him. We were overjoyed.”

Mike grows more and more upset about Becky's anorexia and the fact that the Skulholts won't take her in. The Skulholt brothers decide that they'll pretend to care about Becky's condition a bit just to keep Mike on their side.
Martin receives a two-month deferment for his deportation. Bored, he begins spending time with Yosef at the mental health facility.
Rob, who had bought a Jewish calendar for Michoel, had no idea what a dust-up he would cause by doing so.
“I’m not in a closed institution!” Michoel said, for the ninth time. He was heartily sick of repeating this mantra by then. “All I am asking—demanding, actually— is to be allowed to pray on the two days of the holiday in a Jewish community. That’s all!”
“Indeed, you are not in a closed institution, not at all.” Dr. Jerry, apparently, was not sick of repeating himself at all. “But you are a very unwell man, Mr. Perl. We cannot release you for even one day.”
“What am I unwell with, huh?” Michoel was furious.
“Explain it to me, please!” He stretched out his arms and slowly balled his fists. As he studied his fingers, he suddenly realized how much bonier, whiter, and more wrinkled his hands were—much more than ever before.
“I feel perfect, Doctor, and I have no intentions of praying on my own, when there is a Jewish community just about twenty-five miles from here!”
“How do you know about that?”
“From the kosher products that I get from there.”
“Is that your appreciation?” Skulholt asked quietly.
“There is no connection between the two.” Michoel had known how to be very adamant in the past, but now, he sensed that his strong feelings were nowhere near as intense as they used to be. “There’s no connection between the two,” he repeated, for emphasis. “Nothing. I very much appreciate all your concern and dedication, but still, I think that I am a mature adult who knows what is good for myself and what is not. To the best of my knowledge, I have no acquaintance with any of the Jews in that city, so they will not rouse my dormant memory, if that’s what you are afraid of. I just want to pray with them, that’s all!”
“We have other Jews here whom you can pray with.”
The doctor looked at him placidly. “What about Mike, for example? I get the impression that you’ve become
rather friendly with him.” His calm expression unnerved Michoel. Did Dr. Jerry know about that phone call to Hinda? Had Mike told the staff something?
Michoel stood up. “I need a minyan. A minyan means ten people, not one and not two.”
“There are at least four more Jews here.”
“And they will want to pray all the prayers with me?”
Michoel’s impatience was evident on every one of his facial muscles. “Come on, Dr. Skulholt, don’t make a joke of this. Especially when I just told you that I need ten people, so five for me is as bad as two.”
“I’m sorry, Mr. Perl,” the doctor said, clasping his hands together. “I understand your frustration, but you will not be able to leave.”
He wouldn’t be able to leave!
He had never checked the entrance gate to this place. The only one he could see was an electric gate used by the vehicles that came and went. Regretfully, for him, it was not a gate that he could climb over. It would be one thing if he was ten or twenty years younger…
Was there no entry for pedestrians?
“I understand.” Michoel walked over to the door. “I understand. Fine.”
“I’m sorry, really.”
“One second.” Michoel turned around, one foot still in the corridor. “There are Jewish organizations that take care of hospitalized patients. They send food for the holiday meals, some people to pray with, a shofar…”
“Shofar?”
“An instrument that we use during this holiday’s prayers. Maybe we can contact someone, let them now that I’m here, and that I really want their help?”
“No problem. Give me the name of such an organization.”
Michoel scratched his forehead. He knew of volunteer organizations in Israel, but here?
“I don’t really know where I am, so how can I know which organizations are active here?”
“So how can we find out?”
“Get me a phone directory from the Jewish community here, and I’ll find out.”
The other man looked at him in silence for a long moment. “We’ll think about it,” he said finally. “In any case, I’m not sure we will let strangers in here. Mass celebrations of holidays does not work for us.”
“Who said anything about mass celebrations? I just want a quiet place to host these people, and a room to pray and eat our meals in.”
“For ten people, you said. What are we, a hotel?”
Now it was Michoel's turn to gaze for a long moment at the other man, sitting in the armchair. Without another word, Michoel moved his second foot out to the corridor, overcoming the childish urge to slam the door as he left.
He was in their hands, and all the nice names that they would give it did not change the reality. He had to tell this to Hinda the next time he’d manage to place a secret call to her. Let her come, send someone to him, just help him get out of here…before it would be too late. ***
“What are you looking for, Mr. Perl?” Mike met Michoel on the lawn downstairs, walking up and down.
“The way out.”
Mike grinned. “I can show it to you easily. But the gate is usually locked. Besides, where would you go? There’s nothing around here for at least twenty-five miles or so.”
“I can smuggle myself into a car that is leaving from here,” Michoel said without thinking.
“Is it so bad for you here?” Mike didn’t smile.
“It’s not that it's bad for me…but I need to get to the nearest city. And once we’re at it, do you know where this place is where we are, anyway?”
Mike looked at him, opened his mouth, and then closed it. “I’m sorry, Mr. Perl. I’m not allowed to tell you.” ***
“This is a shofar, yes,” Michoel mumbled the next
evening. He took the small, shiny horn out of Rob’s hands. “But I don’t think I know how to use it. I was never musical.”
“I can play it for you as much as you want,” Rob said with a laugh. “The Jewish salesman at the store showed me how to use it. Look, it’s super easy.” He brought the shofar to his lips, and the sound of a tekiah rose and fell in the room. “Come on, try it?” he attempted to encourage the older man.
“I was never able to blow; it’s not for me,” Michoel waved him away dismissively.
“I’ll do the service for you, okay?”
“No, it’s not good. You’re not Jewish.”
“We’ll call Mike Weisner. If he manages to play it, will it be good?”
Michoel did not answer. He looked at the little shofar, and at the new Machzor that was peeking out from inside the bag in Rob's hands, and he felt like crying. Suddenly he felt so very old and feeble.
Who knew, maybe he really was a ninety-year-old man stuck for years in this place…?
He took a deep breath. No, he had not been here for years. Last year he had been in Yerushalayim on Yom Kippur, for sure. He remembered the argument he’d had with one of the mispallelim before the Haftarah of Yom Kippur. On Rosh Hashanah he had hosted poor Gronam. And on Sukkos…oh, on Sukkos he had been Hinda and Yosef’s guest in Haifa, and it had been very enjoyable.
He wondered what was doing with Gronam all this time. And what about his organization? Was Hinda able to manage all of it by herself, or had everything been suspended until his return?
If he would ever return.
Maybe he should offer them payment, and that was it? Maybe they just wanted some kind of ransom money? Oh, if only he could get out of this place! ***
“You’re going to Haifa just as I’m coming to Bnei Brak?”
Yosef sounded and looked good, which was great. Chani, already dressed for Yom Tov, studied him and the packages near his bed with a smile. “Ima supplied you with all her food, no?”
“Yes, I just need to put stickers on them and put them in the fridge in the ward.” He looked out of the window, not yet feeling completely comfortable in the unfamiliar ward. “It’s a shame you’re not staying here in Bnei Brak with me,” he blurted. “Maybe they would have let me come to you for a meal.”
“You didn’t want to be home?” Chani asked, and immediately regretted the question.
“No.” His face seemed to shutter.
“But you have a minyan here, right?”
“Sure. That’s one of the things Dov told me, and he’s right.” He kept looking out the window. “A mental hospital is not a regular hospital, and being hospitalized for a long time in a secular place is just not good.”
“I think that’s exactly why they opened this mental health department at Mayanei Hayeshuah Hospital. Will you stay here after Yom Tov, too?”
“I don’t know,” he said. “You can go now. I don’t want to hold you up. When is your bus to Haifa?”
“We’re planning to leave as soon as I get back home after visiting you.” She smiled. “I brought you chocolate shaped like an apple; it’s supposed to be good.”
“That's really nice of you,” he said. “Not that it’s good for me to eat so much chocolate, because I’ve gained weight recently… Whatever, it doesn’t matter. When you come back on Motza'ei Rosh Hashanah, come visit again, and I’ll tell you if it was good.”
“B’ezras Hashem, bli neder,” she replied.
After she walked out to Povarsky Street, she called to tell Ima about this last remark, because she knew it had taken Dov over two hours to persuade Yosef to transfer to this hospital for Rosh Hashanah. And even after he’d feebly agreed, he had made clear his intention to leave right after Yom Tov.
· In the most comprehensive assessment to date, ultraprocessed foods were associated with an increased risk of developing and dying from cancer

· Consumption of ultraprocessed food was also associated with an increased risk of dying from cancer, including ovarian and other cancers
· Each 10% increase in ultraprocessed food consumption was associated with a 6% increase in risk of cancer mortality overall, along with a 16% increase in risk of cancer mortality and 30% for ovarian cancer mortality
· The health risks of ultraprocessed foods are concerning enough that one researcher called for warning labels to be added to their packaging so consumers can make informed dietary decisions
Globally, 1 in 6 deaths is caused by cancer, an especially tragic statistic since it’s estimated that at least 50% of cancer causes are preventable. One key risk factor you can modify to lower your risk? Diet, including intake of ultraprocessed foods.
In the most comprehensive assessment to date of the link between ultraprocessed food consumption and cancers, researchers from Imperial College London’s School of Public Health found these cheap convenience foods are linked to an increased risk of developing and dying from cancer.
Intake of ultraprocessed foods is on the rise worldwide. In the U.S. and the U.K., more than half of daily caloric intake comes from these junk foods. What exactly are ultraprocessed foods (UPFs)? The Imperial College London researchers defines them as:
“… foods that are industrial formulations made by assembling industrially-derived food substances and food additives through a sequence of extensive industrial processes. UPFs contain little or no whole foods and are often energy dense, high in salt, sugar and fat, low in fiber, and liable to overconsumption.
They are aggressively marketed with strong brands to promote consumption and are gradually displacing traditional dietary patterns based on fresh and minimally processed food.”
The study involved data from the diets of 197,426 people between the ages of 40 and 69 years. Participants’ health was monitored for 10 years; the mean consumption of ultraprocessed foods was 22.9%.
Overall, consuming more ultraprocessed foods was linked with a greater risk of developing any cancer, as well as ovarian and brain cancers specifically. It was also associated with an increased
risk of dying from cancer, including ovarian and other cancers. Further:
· Each 10% increase in ultraprocessed food consumption was linked to a 2% increased incidence of cancer overall and a 19% increased incidence of ovarian cancer.
· Each 10% increase in ultraprocessed food consumption was associated with a 6% increase in risk of cancer mortality overall, along with a 16% increase in risk of cancer mortality and 30% for ovarian cancer mortality.
Study author Kiara Chang of Imperial College London’s School of Public Health said in a news release:
“The average person in the UK consumes more than half of their daily energy intake from ultra-processed foods. This is exceptionally high and concerning as ultra-processed foods are produced with industrially derived ingredients and often use food additives to adjust color, flavor, consistency, texture, or extend shelf life.
Our bodies may not react the same way to these ultra-processed ingredients and additives as they do to fresh and nutritious minimally processed foods. However, ultra-processed foods are everywhere and highly marketed with cheap price and attractive packaging to promote consumption. This shows our food environment needs urgent reform to protect the population from ultraprocessed foods.”
The Imperial College London study was observational and therefore can’t establish a causal link. However, past research has revealed similar cancer risks. In one study, men who consumed the most ultraprocessed foods had a 29% higher risk of developing colorectal cancer than those who consumed the least.
Among subgroups of ultraprocessed foods, ready-to-eat meat, poultry and seafood products along with sugarsweetened beverages were associated with increased colorectal cancer risk.
There are a number of reasons why ultraprocessed foods likely increase cancer risk, not the least of which is their link to other conditions that increase cancer risk, like obesity and Type 2 diabetes. Plus, ultraprocessed foods are nutritionally inferior to their fresh counterparts.
However, ultraprocessing a food also leads to “alteration of food matrices” that “results in degradation of food health potential and deterioration of nutrient bioavailability and bioaccessibility,” the researchers explained. Further:
“Emerging research has suggested other common properties of UPFs that may contribute to adverse cancer outcomes, including through the use of controversial food additives, neoformed contaminants during ultra-processing, and toxic contaminants migrated from food packaging.”
Phthalates and bisphenols-F are among the common endocrinedisrupting chemicals in ultraprocessed food packaging that have been linked to human cancers and DNA damage.
The health risks of ultraprocessed foods are concerning enough that Chang called for warning labels to be added to their packaging so consumers can make informed dietary decisions. She said:
“We need clear front of pack warning labels for ultra-processed foods to aid consumer choices, and our sugar tax should be extended to cover ultraprocessed fizzy drinks, fruit-based and milk-based drinks, as well as other ultraprocessed products.
Lower income households are particularly vulnerable to these cheap and unhealthy ultra-processed foods. Minimally processed and freshly prepared meals should be subsidized to ensure everyone has access to healthy, nutritious and affordable options.
Indeed, a warning label isn’t a stretch, considering eating ultraprocessed foods has also been found to be a
significant cause of premature death, according to researchers with the University of São Paulo in Brazil.
That study found about 57,000 premature deaths were due to the consumption of ultraprocessed foods, which amounted to 10.5% of all-cause premature deaths, and 21.8% of premature deaths from noncommunicable diseases among this age group.
Among Americans, ultraprocessed foods make up about 57% of daily calories, on average, leading the researchers to suggest premature deaths linked to the foods are likely even greater in the U.S. In Brazil, meanwhile, the study found that if the contribution of ultraprocessed foods to total caloric intake was reduced by 10% to 50%, anywhere from 5,900 to 29,300 deaths could be prevented, annually.
Further, the researchers estimated that if ultraprocessed foods made up less than 23% of adults’ daily calories, about 20,000 premature deaths could be prevented each year. A study of 22,985 adults in Italy also found those who consumed the most ultraprocessed foods had the highest risk for all-cause and cardiovascular mortality.
Consuming heavily processed junk food takes a toll on your whole body, including your brain. Research published in JAMA Neurology demonstrated that consuming UPFs such as breakfast cereal, frozen foods and soda could lead to cognitive decline and increase your risk of Alzheimer's disease.
The study involved 10,775 people living in Brazil over an eight-year period. The data showed a correlation between an individual's “high consumption” of ultraprocessed food, such that high consumption led to a 28% faster decline in global cognitive scores, including memory, verbal fluency and executive function.
However, instead of using 50% or 60% of the daily caloric intake
of ultraprocessed food as high consumption, this study defined high consumption as “more than 20%.” The study didn’t identify whether there was a dose-dependent effect. In other words, they only looked at whether eating more than 20% of the daily caloric intake in ultraprocessed foods would affect cognitive decline. If a person ate double or triple that amount, would the rate of cognitive decline be greater?
Another study also found brain risks of ultraprocessed foods. It included 72,083 participants aged 55 years or older. Over a 10-year follow-up period, consumption of ultraprocessed food was associated with an increased risk of dementia and vascular dementia.
Meanwhile, replacing just 10% of ultraprocessed foods in the diet with unprocessed or minimally processed foods was associated with a 19% lower risk of dementia — highlighting how powerful even minimal healthy dietary changes can be.
“Although more research is needed, as a neuroscientist who researches how diet can influence cognition later in life,” Sara Burke, associate professor of neurobiology and cognitive aging at the University of Florida, wrote in Science Alert, “I find that these early studies add a new layer for considering how fundamental nutrition is to brain health.”
As research pours in over the health risks of ultraprocessed foods, it’s ironic that fake meat and other lab-made plant-based pseudofoods are still being passed off as healthy. It’s hard to ultraprocess a food more than a labmade burger.
Plant-based or lab-grown meat and dairy alternatives are the very definition of ultraprocessed foods, containing no
healthy animal fats but, rather, heavily processed fats from industrial seed oils like soy and canola oil.
A hallmark of ultraprocessed foods is their long ingredient lists. “You are not likely to find the ingredients that make up most of these foods in your home kitchen,” Burke said. Beyond Burger’s fake meat patties, for instance, contain 22 ingredients. Among them are expeller-pressed canola oil, pea protein isolate, cellulose from bamboo, modified food starch and methylcellulose — hardly “health” foods.
To morph these ingredients into a patty that resembles meat requires significant processing, so don’t fall for the hype that fake foods are somehow good for you. They’re likely to cause all of the same health problems now being linked to more obvious ultraprocessed foods, such as diabetes, heart disease and cancer, along with all-cause mortality.
Is it coincidence, then, that according to the World Economic Forum and other Great Reset proponents, a traditional whole food diet is being vilified as unsustainable and environmentally destructive? Instead, they’re pushing for a transition away from whole foods to a highly unnatural, ultraprocessed food diet.
For example, the EAT Forum, cofounded by the Wellcome Trust, developed a Planetary Health Diet designed to be applied to the global population. It entails cutting meat and dairy intake by up to 90%, replacing it largely with foods made in laboratories, along with cereals and oil.
Their largest initiative is called FReSH, which aims to transform the food system by working with biotech and fake meat companies to replace whole foods with lab-created alternatives that are certain to be detrimental to human
health.
There’s little doubt that ultraprocessed foods have no place in a healthy diet. Eliminating them means avoiding junk foods, fast foods and many packaged items in your grocery store, from bread and pizza to cookies, salted crackers and meat products such as lunch meat and hot dogs. If you want one ingredient to target, however, start with seed oils, also known as vegetable oils, such as corn oil, soybean oil, sunflower oil and canola oil.
In the last 50 years, global vegetable oil production increased 10-fold, rising from 17 million tons in the 1960s to 170 million tons in 2014 — and 218 million tons in 2018. Vegetable and seed oils are high in the omega-6 fatty acid linoleic acid (LA).
While an essential fat, when consumed in excessive amounts LA acts as a metabolic poison. The reason for this is because polyunsaturated fats such as LA are highly susceptible to oxidation.
As Americans consumed greater amounts of seed oils high in LA, there was an increase in the concentration of LA in subcutaneous fat tissue, which correlates with an increase in the prevalence of asthma, obesity and diabetes. Eliminating ultraprocessed foods from your diet is essential to keeping your LA intake low, and vice versa, as the two go hand-in-hand.
If the thought of overhauling your diet to remove ultraprocessed foods seems daunting, reframe it from a move of scarcity to one of abundance. By giving up these toxic junk foods, you’re gaining a place in your diet to add in whole foods, which — instead of taking away your health one meal at a time — will give your body the nutrients it needs to heal and stay well.
AEver wondered why you crave a chocolate bar or sweets midafternoon? That 3pm slump happens to millions of people around the world so you're not alone, but have you ever wondered why it happens?
For some people, making healthy food or drink choices is easy, at least up until mid to late afternoon. For some reason, sugar cravings have a way of exacerbating just at the most tempting time of the day – the timing when we get home from work and when our kids start coming in at the same time…
What is happening to us scientifically, at this hour?
1. Dropping sugar levels
As the day moves along, you get physically worn out as a result of your working day, even if it's sitting at your desk for hours. Also, your sugar levels naturally tend to slump as the day pans out. When physical tiredness and low blood sugar levels combine, the result is a significant and sudden dip in your energy levels. Basically, you are in real need of a nap. But you still have tons of work to do, so you can't call it a day just yet, no matter how low the energy level gets. Therefore, what do you do? Your brain tells you to implement a quick fix and keep working, and there is no quicker fix than a sugar-filled food or drink!
Your sugar and energy levels rise immediately after eating a chocolate bar, but this temporary energy causes an artificial spike in blood sugar which results in a crash a few hours down the line. Meaning, you are craving sugar all over again.
2. You picked up a bad habit. Do you know what the worst thing is about a bad habit? It’s the concept that you will hardly notice it, so breaking away from it can be extremely tough. If you develop a routine of running to the closet for a square of chocolate every day at 3 pm, you will not even have to be tired or have a sugar slump to eat sugar. You will naturally just go for the sugar since this became a habit.
3. You ate too little or too many calories.
If you fail to give your body enough calories at lunchtime, it will soon start craving for a quick energy boost. When you eat excess starch, like a bowl of spaghetti, without eating enough fiber, fats, and/or proteins, your body gets excess calories but still doesn't feel nutritionally satisfied. The carbs are converted to glucose and are absorbed fast and boom! Your blood sugar rises, resulting in a blood sugar crash midafternoon. What do you think you need to do to feel better? Reach for more sugar! This is obviously making you feed into a vicious cycle! Make sure you add veggies, protein, and some olive oil to your lunch to break the sugar cycle.
4. Bad sleep patterns.
Not getting enough sleep can have all sorts of negative effects on your eating patterns the next day. Skipping breakfast means missed calories and to some extent, inadequate energy to push you through the day (at least not beyond 3 pm). To make up for the inadequacy, you find yourself
running for a portion of unhealthy sugary food or drink. And it is not just skipping breakfast; not eating enough lunch will also lead to sugar cravings in the afternoon. Sleep deprivation can also decrease your leptin (satiety hormone), so you feel constant hunger even after eating a heavy lunch. That's why you crave for an energy boost (sugar) after lunch. Inadequate sleep is also known to cause high-level and chronic stress, which consequently increases your afternoon craving for sugary treats.
5. A rewarding system.
Since our younger years, many of us have been rewarded for positive behaviors or accomplishments with…sweets. Nothing changed! After a long and hard day, we psychologically want to reward ourselves with a treat, which is sugar. We almost feel as if we “deserve” to ingest extra sweets. It is a physical form of validation. That being said, think about how ironic this really is. You worked hard all day, eating on point, but now that you want to “reward” yourself you are doing so with things that are not great for you? Reward yourself truly, with a high-quality and nutritious treat instead, such as an apple with nut butter, cucumbers with chummus, or a good quality muffin and coffee.
Once you understand why you get sugar cravings in the afternoon, you'll have a far better chance of getting your sugar consumption back on track.
Next week we will discuss options to help us combat the 3 pm slump.
QI am a pretty disciplined eater, however, come what may, by 3:00 pm, my head is spinning and I am in desperate need of sugar. Is this normal?

Last week we discussed getting your loan approved and receiving conditional approval, meaning certain conditions must be satisfied in order to get your loan
Getting approved for a loan is a major step in the loan process, however, it still is the first step. In order to fulfill the loan approval and keep your commitment, there are several things you need to be aware of and do. Let's explore how you can satisfy a loan approval and honor your commitment responsibly
When a loan is approved, it means that a lender believes in your ability to repay the borrowed money. It's important to understand that a loan is not free money; it is a financial responsibility. To satisfy a loan approval, your loan officer/ processor must carefully read and understand the terms and conditions set forth by the lender These terms include the amount borrowed, the interest rate, the repayment period, and any additional fees. By knowing and agreeing to these terms, you can ensure a smooth loan repayment process. Your loan officer/ processor will work on ensuring that all the conditions of your commitment are met. Not all conditions require action from the borrower Some conditions, such as title conditions, appraisal conditions, etc the loan officer/ processor can address without involving the borrower.
Now that you have your loan approval/ commitment and you set a tentative date for your closing, you can begin working on closing your loan Once confirmed that all parties are ready to close, it’s time to lock the rate
When obtaining a conventional loan, it's crucial to understand how interest rates work We will explore the basics of interest rates on conventional loans, how they are determined, and their impact on borrowers.
Interest rates on conventional loans refer to the percentage charged by lenders for borrowing money. They represent the cost of borrowing and are typically expressed as an annual percentage of the loan amount.
Interest rates on conventional loans are influenced by vario factors, including economic conditions, the state of the econ inflation rates, unemployment levels, and economic growth

Looking for your dream home in Linden?
Stop dreaming! You only get what you dream of if you build it from scratch
Make a list of everything you want your house to be and then decide what you're ready to give up on and what's a priority for you. (ex: Is it more important to you to have a big lot, not be on a main street, or not be near a public school.. ) Be realistic! Looking forward to serving you!

Continued from previous page:
During periods of economic downturns, interest rates tend to rise, while during economic growth, rates may decrease.
The Federal Reserve, the central bank of the United States, plays a significant role in setting interest rates. The Federal Reserve adjusts short-term interest rates to manage the economy and control inflation. Although the Federal Reserve's interest rates aren’t tied to mortgage interest rates, nor does it set mortgage rates, its actions indirectly affect mortgage rates.
These factors aren’t related to the borrower; these are market factors. But there are factors on the borrower's end that play a role as well.
Creditworthiness of the borrower is another key player on the rate, determined by factors like credit history, credit score, and income stability. These could affect the interest rate the borrower is offered. Those with higher credit scores and strong financial profiles generally qualify for lower interest rates Lenders view them as less risky and more likely to make timely payments
Another factor is the loan term and amount The term of the loan and the amount borrowed can also influence interest rates Typically, longer loan terms or larger loan amounts may result in slightly higher interest rates How much money the borrower gives for a down payment can also play a role in the interest rate
By paying a larger down payment, the borrower might get a lower rate
Debt-to-Income Ratio (DTI) also influences an individual’s interest rate Lenders assess the borrower’s DTI ratio, which compares their monthly debt obligations to their monthly income A lower DTI ratio indicates better financial stability and may lead to lower interest rates
Next week we’ll discuss the impact of the rates and locking your rate followed by the closing process
Question: How is student loan debt calculated for a mortgage when I don’t need to make payments currently?
Answer: When you don't have to make any current payments on your student loans, lenders will still consider your student loan debt when calculating your mortgage eligibility They may use a percentage of your total student loan balance as a "shadow payment" to assess your debt-toincome ratio (DTI). The specific percentage used can vary, typically around 1% to 2% of the outstanding balance Each lender may have different policies, with their specific guidelines.

Assemblyman Simcha Eichenstein is inviting local children to participate in his NYS Assembly Summer Reading Challenge. Those who complete the challenge will be awarded an official State Assembly Excellence in Reading Certificate.
“Reading is vital for young New Yorkers’ intellectual development, especially over the summer months when it’s more important than ever to hone their reading skills,” said Assemblyman Eichenstein. “That’s why I’m excited to announce my Summer Reading Challenge which will help motivate our children to continue reading and develop a love of learning.”
To participate in Assemblyman Eichenstein's Summer Reading Challenge, children must read for at least fifteen minutes a day for 40 days during the months of July and August. Children may read by themselves or together with a partner or parent. After marking forty days on the calendar, they may submit it to Assemblyman Eichenstein’s office to receive their official State Assembly Excellence in Reading Certificate by mail.
For more information about Assemblyman Eichenstein's Summer Reading Challenge, please call his assembly district office at; (718) 853-9616 or email; Eichensteins@nyassembly.gov.
Happy reading!

R’ Yisroel of Vizhnitz was taking his usual walk, when he continued walking further then he usually does. He continued into the rich neighborhood of Yidden who had become estranged from Yiddishkeit.
The Shamash wondered what the Rebbe was planning to do, but just walked along with him. He was shocked when the Rebbe stopped at the home of a well-known banker.
The banker came to open the door and was equally shocked to find the Vizhnitzer Rebbe standing there. He invited him in and gave him the most comfortable chair to sit on. The Rebbe sat there a few minutes and did not say a word.
He then got up and walked out of the banker’s house. The Shamash and the banker looked at each other, confused. The banker continued to walk with the Rebbe back to his house. The entire way, the Rebbe did not say a word.
When they got to the Rebbe’s house, the banker could control himself no more and asked, “Why did the Rebbe come to me tonight?”
The Rebbe finally broke his silence by saying, “I came to you tonight to fulfill a Mitzvah, and I have fulfilled it.”
This answer puzzled the banker even more. “What Mitzvah could the Rebbe
By: Esther S.possibly have fulfilled by sitting in my house in silence?”
The Rebbe explained, “There is a Mitzvah in the Torah that if someone will not listen to what you tell him, you shouldn’t say it. If I would sit in my house and you in yours, then you wouldn’t know that I have something to tell you, but am not, because you won’t listen. I came to your house to get the Mitzvah of not telling you what I know you will not listen to.”
Now the banker needed to know what the Rebbe wanted to say, he begged and the Rebbe refused to say.
After a long time of the banker not giving up, the Rebbe said, “There is a widow who owes your bank a lot of money. She cannot pay the mortgage on her house, and in 2 days your bank will take away her house, and the widow and her children will be left with nothing. I know you will not let her go without payment, so I didn’t want to ask you.”
The banker replied, “I am not even the owner of the bank, and I cannot even let her go without paying. She owes a huge sum of money…”
The Rebbe replied, “You see, I knew you will not do it.”
The banker left, and on the way home, he made a decision to let the widow keep her house.

Bakery employees said they had been in the process of loading cupcakes into a van for a delivery when a bear made its appearance. Workers at a Connecticut bakery had a bear scare when a hungry bruin charged into the business' garage and made off with 60 cupcakes. The bear entered through an open garage door and draged a box containing 60 cupcakes into the parking lot, where it took a few minutes to feast on the pilfered confections.
