Recap of Chapter 50

Dr. Jerry questions Michoel again—this time about his family members, both past and present. Michoel mentions to him that he wants to bring his nephew Yosef to the facility, so he could be cured of his schizophrenia.

Dov takes Martin along with him to Bnei Brak, for a siyum on the yahrtzeit of his first wife. The two discuss the legal steps Martin should take so that he won’t be a “wanted man” anymore, and Martin tells Dov that he is interested in learning more about Judaism.

CHAPTER FIFTY ONE

They arrived at Chevy's home, where the siyum and yahrtzeit seudah would be held. It was actually Dov's house, but his daughter Chevy was living there for now, until her own apartment would be ready. It was the natural place for them to hold the event.

Dov and Martin had been engaged in conversation about possible study tracks for Martin, and they did not stop talking even as they called for the elevator, or when it stopped in front of the open door of the apartment on the third floor. Dov only fell silent when he saw Chevy and Yael in the entryway.

“Abba, welcome!” Chevy greeted her father. “We’ve been waiting for you.” She glanced beyond his shoulder, as if to make sure that no one—other than the unfamiliar boy trailing her father—had come with him.

“How are you, girls?” he asked, putting the brimming bag he was carrying into Chevy’s arms. “Here are the bourekas, and cabbage salad, if I’m not mistaken. Come in, Martin. I’m right behind you.” He pointed to the dining room, and made sure that Martin had gone in, before turning to his daughters. “How are you doing?”

“Baruch Hashem.” Chevy leaned against the wall. “Who’s here already?”

“Everyone except Penina. Aunt Nechama’s boys are on the way, and Uncle Feivish should be here any minute.”

“I also brought a guest. I hope it will be okay.”

Simi peeked in from the kitchen, and he walked in and discovered himself surrounded by his daughters, almost like it used to be. They stood silently, and he faced them, standing close. Two of his girls were red-eyed, and Haifa was suddenly very far away as he felt his own eyes tearing too.

“You’ve all grown up so much, girls, since Ima’s petirah,” he finally said, quietly. “When Ima comes back, she’ll be very proud of you, I’m sure.”

“He—llooo!!” Little Batsheva’s carriage was first to be marched into the kitchen, followed by Penina herself, grinning from ear to ear. “Everyone is here already? I’m the last one?”

“Not really,” Simi hurriedly reassured her. “Maybe the last of us, but there are other people who still have to come. It’s fine.”

“What were you all just talking about?” Penina asked. At the same second, Batsheva began wailing from the carriage. Penina leaned over to her. “She’s been crying all day; I don’t know what’s with her!”

“Maybe the date has to do with it,” Yael said. “My Batsheva was also edgy today, and no matter what I asked her or offered her, she kept saying, “Botty, boo-boo, paci…”

“But isn’t it supposed to be a Yom Tov for the neshamah? Every time period that goes by is another level higher, or something like that, isn’t it…?” Penina studied the faces around her in the kitchen. Her husband, Zevi, peeked in from the doorway, saw that it was an intimate family

moment, and withdrew, heading for his brothers-in-law in the dining room. The atmosphere wasn’t quite as heavy there.

“What do we know?” Simi replied, and hurried to stir the pot of sauce on the fire.

“And besides,” Chevy's voice was shaky, “we don’t always think about Ima's neshamah. Like now, we’re thinking about ourselves and how we feel about this date.” And she hurried to the second pot, even though there was nothing in it to stir. Potatoes do fine on their own.

Dov wanted to answer Penina’s question. But then she turned to him. “Is Hinda here, Abba?”

“No,” he replied.

“Why not?”

Silence.

“Because…the idea just never came up. Neither of us ever mentioned it being an option.” He looked at his youngest, Penina, who had lost her mother a mere three months after her marriage, and wondered if these things were quantifiable—who had struggled more than the others to recover from the tragedy.

“But I see that she sent her cabbage salad.” Penina motioned to the clear container, pointedly looking at other things and not her sisters. “That was very nice of her!”

“That’s right.” Dov smiled at his daughter. “You're managing here with the food and all, right? I think that the bourekas are still warm—decide if you want to reheat them; I’m not sure you need to. I’ll go out to the men now.”

There was silence in the kitchen when he left.

Dov shook the hands of the others, and naturally walked over to the glass doors of the bookcase. Many of these sefarim belonged to him; he’d only taken some of his collection with him to Haifa. Hanging in a corner of the hallway, behind the plant, in a hidden spot, was a small picture of his first wife. He turned his head quickly, and met Martin’s eyes. The boy was sitting on the leather couch on the opposite wall. The couch that she had bought shortly before being diagnosed. The previous couch they'd had was faded and old, and was actually quite similar to the one standing in the Haifa house today—whose stitches on the back were already mostly undone.

Zevi, Penina’s husband, stood next to him. “How are you?” he asked his father-in-law politely. He lowered his voice.

“Should I try to 'schmooze up' your guest? I’m good at that.”

Zevi wasn’t only good at it; he was great at it. “Sure, that would be nice of you. Just without interrogations, please.”

“Nothing at all,” his young son-in-law promised.

“Oh, and it’s good you reminded me; the subject flew out of

my mind for a few minutes. Maybe offer him your phone— he needs to make an important call.”

“Sure.”

“But you should know ahead of time,” Dov’s voice dropped, “that it’s a conversation that might bring the police to you. It’s not something criminal, don’t worry, but they might try to get to him this way. If they do reach out to you—and I’m not sure it will happen—tell them that you did a favor for a stranger and let him make a call with your phone, okay?”

“Fine.” Zevi’s outgoing personality covered up the fact that he was a quick thinker. “It’s probably better that I shouldn’t ask him his name, right?”

“Right. And now that I’m thinking about it, don’t give him your phone just yet. It’s better that he should call at the end of the siyum, even after we go up to the kever. So that if they are too quick, we won’t be here anymore.”

Zevi nodded. The story didn’t sound typical of his staid and predictable father-in-law, but then again, people aren’t always what they seem to be. He looked at the boy, wearing what was clearly a temporary yarmulke, based on his appearance, and the boy looked back at him; he apparently realized that he was the subject of the conversation.

Zevi made his way over to Martin and stuck out his hand. “Nice to meet you,” he said with a smile. “I’m Zevi, and I understand it’s better that you don’t introduce yourself.”

“I can tell you that my name is Martin. My guess is that if someone comes to ask you about me, they’ll know that it’s me, so it doesn’t really matter.” He looked at the cell phone peeking out of Zevi’s pocket.

“Yes, we just spoke about that.” Zevi pointed to Dov with his chin. “He said it’s better that you call just before you leave from here.”

Martin was quiet for a moment. “Right,” he said. “It’s better that it shouldn’t be from the house at all. Whose house is this, by the way?”

“My father-in-law's,” Zevi said. “Right now, my brother-inlaw and sister-in-law live here, because he’s living in Haifa.”

“That I know. But the house there is very…” Martin groped for the right word. “Different. Very different.”

“I know.” Zevi shrugged. “You know how it is; it’s not the man who furnishes the house, so what can you do…”

Martin chuckled but then grew serious. He stood up when he saw other men coming in and taking seats at the table. Zevi handed him a small, printed booklet from the stack in the middle of the table, and offered him a chair.

It looked like the siyum—whatever it was—was about to begin.

Recap: Tehilla visits the library again to do further research on strokes. She meets her principal to discuss why she was rejected to all three high schools that she applied to. Pori is hired as a ninth grade teacher and extra-curricular advisor. Ahuva spots Tehilla and is reminded about the heartbreaking way that their friendship was forced to end.

CHAPTER SIX:

I read the paper once more and folded it up into a small square. This is irrelevant. Just because someone, (Ahuva?) was spreading ugly rumors about me, that didn’t make it relevant to my reality. My reality didn’t match the rumors- mostly, at least. They say that where there is smoke, there is fire- but what if it isn’t smoke, just fire?

With these thoughts flowing through my mind, the paper landed squarely in my trash can. I already heard the tapping of my mother’s walking stick. Smile firmly etched on my face, I looked up to greet her.

“What was that, Tehilla?” My mother’s razorsharp brain was back.

“What was what?”

“That ping! that I just heard, you threw out a paper. And hey, what is this envelope? Machon Batsheva?” There were no secrets with my mother. She was home again, better than ever. Somehow, my inner protectiveness tried to convince me that I was the one on the giving end. My mother was in charge, fair, square…and crippled.

“It was an acceptance letter.”

“Wow! Such great news! Which school was this, again?”

“Ma, the letter is in the garbage. This school caters to girls at-risk.” Ma’s eyes bore holes, straight into my soul.

“And don’t you think that describes you, Tehilla?” ***

Ahuva had a designer briefcase with matching school supplies laid out on the spare bed in her room. She had a crisp and ironed uniform, fresh from the dry cleaners, as her mother had insisted. The only thing that she lacked was will. She had no will or motivation for getting out of bed and actually

attending school.

It wasn’t like she was being given a choice. So, when she trudged down the steps on that fateful day, it wasn’t like she had the option of staying in bed. Her mother was blending the ingredients for an acai bowl, with an array of toppings prepared on the kitchen table.

“Huvs! Good morning!” her mother trilled. When Ahuva didn’t answer, a cloud passed over face, but she let it pass. “Ahuva, I made delicious home-made nut butter and caramelized almonds for topping the first-dayof-school-acai-bowl breakfast!”

Ahuva smiled weakly. “Thanks.”

Her mouth dropped open at the sight of her breakfast table. A large stack of pancakes were piled high in the center of a red-checkered tablecloth. Red bowls were filled with toppings and sauces for the pancakes, with a chalkboard near it- PANCAKE BAR.

The acai bowl bar featured dazzling fruits and nuts in every shape and color.

This was nuts. Literally! Ahuva knew deep within herself, that no mother really prepared like this for a first day breakfast- even a first day of high school breakfast.

Her response was automatic. “Mom, why? What on earth?”

Her mother turned from the smoothie maker she was bent over. Her hands trembled.

“Because I love you?”

“Or because you want me to be excited about not going to high school with Tehilla?” Ahuva’s tone was challenging.

“And what if you and I both know that Tehilla isn’t a good friend for you? That her reputation speaks for itself? I know that it is hard to accept it, but you know that this isn’t good for you. It’s only your life that I care about, Ahuva.”

Ahuva cared about another life, as well. She cared about her friend, Tehilla. As long as Tehilla was in pain, she was also in pain. Tehilla was an extension of herself for as long as she had lived in America. And Tehilla’s pain, no matter how far, would always be her own. ***

“Tehilla Kaplan?” Pori read the name and tried to control the emotions that it evoked. A sullen, angry face greeted her. Pori tried

not to gasp at the sight of her sister’s former best friend glowering right into her face. She also tried not to notice the gaudy jewelry and uniform that was borderline immodest. Are rumors a self-fulfilling prophecy? She wondered, as she read on. She wasn’t given much of a chance to ruminate, because the door banged open and Rebbetzin Cohen marched right in.

“Tehilla Kaplan, please follow me.”

Face burning, Tehilla got up and followed the Menaheles out of the room. Two girls whispered to each other furiously. One girl snickered in the corner.

“Please quiet down and get a pen and paper ready.” Pori’s voice wavered. What was going on? It was only the first day of school, how could Tehilla do something so bad and so fast? She would have to wait.

Two girls haphazardly removed a sheet of paper from their binders. Pori waited. Some girls spaced out and others just looked right back at her.

“I think I said something,” Pori said softly. “Girls, just take out a sheet of paper and a pen for note-taking.”

“We don’t really care.” The girl with a dark face framed with black curls didn’t bother raising her hand. “If we care, we will choose to take notes.”

The complete lack of respect astounded her, but she wasn’t about to let the girls know that. “Okay, so listen. And then decide if I have something worthwhile to share with you.” The girl looked amused. A quick glance at the seating chart listed her name as: Mazal Arakanchi.

The class looked intrigued at her answer, and one girl even whipped out a fresh sheet of paper. Feeling the momentum in the room rising by the minute, Pori dived right into her brilliant lesson.

“Are you the person that you are because of your past, present, or what you hope to grow into in the near future? After all is said and done, how do you define who you really are?

Mazal smiled and clicked her pen open. Victory! Pori’s heart beat a little faster at the sight of five more girls pulling out their binders. Maybe she was better at this than she

gave herself credit for. When the bell rang forty minutes later, every single one of her thirty-five students had three complete pages of perfect notes. ***

“Ahuva Sternstein?” Mrs. Stern was an experienced soul. She had been teaching high school for over twenty years, and felt that she pretty much met every kind of student by now. That’s why Ahuva’s response to her name during attendance surprised her. Ahuva didn’t bother looking up. She just gave a small half smile. Rochel Stern knew that some girls were shy on the first day of ninth grade. She also had a keen sense of perception when it came to personality and character. Ahuva didn’t strike her as an insecure ninth grader. Ahuva seemed to be angry. Almost seething. As if someone had forced her to come to the elite and sought-after high school that she was in.

As the lesson progressed, Rochel Stern noticed another thing. Ahuva didn’t even lift her pen once to take notes. Ahuva didn’t lift her head once to meet the teacher’s eyes. She didn’t seem to care about much of anything.

When Rochel Stern left the classroom, she knew one thing: Ahuva would be a tough nut to crack, but a little bit of work and a whole lot of love would open her student up to appreciate the great person that she would come to be. ***

Chava Kaplan stared at the mess before her eyes. It wasn’t that the mess was unusual in her kitchen, it was just that cleaning it up required a lot of energy- more than it had in the past. It was grueling, physical therapy, bending down and picking up garbage was hard work. An hour later, she surveyed the sparkling kitchen. A strange sense of pride filled her at the sight of her kitchen. The spotless kitchen spoke to her heart, whispering softly- Chava, you will be okay. Not only will you be okay, you already are okay. You may have lost your physical capabilities, but look at what one determined mother can do.

In her heart of hearts, Chava knew that this kitchen meant nothing. It just meant hard work. Being the hard working superwoman that she was, hard work didn’t scare her. It was her children’s reaction to the hard work that

scared her more than anything else. When the door swung open, announcing Tehilla’s arrival, she whispered a quick prayer to Hashem that the report of her first day of school would be a good one, if not a great one.

“Hello, Ma!”

“Tehilla! How was your first day?”

“Good.” Tehilla’s generic response twisted something in her mother’s heart.

“Tehilla, I would like to hear every detail! Tell me, who are your teachers? Who are your classmates?” Chava tried not sound too desperate.

“My teachers are okay. My classmates are all nice.” Tehilla slid her bag onto the kitchen floor and peeked into the oven.

“Yum! Beer battered chicken nuggets!” With that, the conversation was closed. ***

There really wasn’t much to say. So, I found comfort in writing, instead. The words usually held hands and formed a beautiful melody, but the words that I jotted down today just came out toneless and dry. I just had to write it. So I did. I got up a half hour later and stretched. If only words can sing, I thought. If only my words can be a source of comfort and inspiration, not all gloom and doom. My words are only a reflection of my reality. What if my reality is all gloom and doom?

Later, much later, I lay in bed and re-read what I had written earlier. A new thought popped out of nowhere and formulated in mind. What if I can take these sad words, and match it to a tune? Perhaps I had the power to re-write my own story. If I could infuse joy and meaning into a hard reality, I could also find the spark within me to live each moment and turn it into a moment of joy. ***

Ahuva clicked open the golden heart and allowed her eyes to fill with tears. There was no one home to witness the tears. It was a safe time to cry.

She clicked the heart pendant shut and got up from her desk. She had homework to do. Ninth grade was hard work, and she had a list of five different assignments from five different teachers that were due tomorrow. The first day

of school was surprisingly full of information and work. No sweet introductions, no warm and cozy events, just work.

She tackled the easiest one first. Her writing teacher had assigned a fun introductory activity. She had to match her personality to a color and introduce herself in a proper essay, explaining why her personality matched that color. Ahuva picked purple, and smiled at the purple walls in her room. Hello, my name is Ahuva Sternstein. My favorite color is purple, because it is a combination of blue and red, the symbol of royalty. Royalty means that a leader has to combine the blue calm waters of the ocean with the fiery red passion in his heart. Purple is the perfect blend and balance of royalty.

In my own life, I try to live a life of royalty. I try to always behave like the daughter of Hashem, a princess. I also try to stay true to my inner beliefs and ideas that I am passionate about.

Ahuva stopped writing and read her paragraph again. Was that true? Did she really always stay true to her inner beliefs and ideas that she was passionate about? Something tickled at the corner of her brain. Was just letting a friendship go without further investigation and discussion the correct thing? Did letting Tehilla go, and leave a hurting friend to suffer in silence…was that really a reflection of her values?

Ahuva left her unfinished essay on her desk and dialed the phone number. She had a whole lot of work to do, but she was finally ready to do it. Ahuva would find out exactly who it was that was trying to tarnish Tehilla’s good name.

BIG CHIP PESACH COOKIES

1 Egg

3 Tablespoons Coconut Oil, softened cup Honey

2 teaspoons Pure Vanilla Extract

½ teaspoon Baking Soda

2 ½ cups Wellbee’s Almond Flour

½ cup Shredded Coconut

½ cup Chopped Walnuts

½ cup Chocolate Chips

• Preheat oven to 325˚F.

• Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper.

• In a medium sized bowl, beat egg with fork until frothy. Add coconut oil, honey, and vanilla extract and mix well. Add baking soda and almond flour and mix until combined. Add coconut, walnuts, and chocolate chips.

• Form 2-Tablespoon-sized balls about 2 inches apart on the cookie sheet. Tip: Wear rubber gloves when forming balls to avoid stickiness.

• Bake for 16-18 minutes or until the bottom of the cookies are golden brown.

• Remove cookies from oven, and cool completely.

How to Stay Fit for Life

· It is rarely too late to start resistance training; you can build muscle mass well after age 60. In 2022, we set a new personal record in the leg press for 600 pounds, far better than the 400-pound deadlift we did the year before

· Sarcopenia — age-related muscle loss — threatens a healthy lifespan. Skeletal muscle not only manages physical activity, but also plays a major role in metabolism, circulation and cognition

· Skeletal muscle acts as endocrine organ secreting myokines and transcription factors into the bloodstream, thereby regulating the function of other organs. It also has immune regulatory properties

· The loss of muscle mass is thought to be a primary driver of insulin resistance in older adults. Declining muscle strength and reduced physical activity also contribute to metabolic dysfunction

· In order to gain muscle mass though one needs a critical to eat enough protein. A minimum is about 1.2 grams per kilogram of body weight (0.54 grams/pound) per day. Athletes and the elderly could probably benefit from going up from that level to about 1.6 grams/kilogram (0.71 grams/pound)

This may be one of the most important articles I've ever written with respect to helping you understand how important resistance exercise is to not only slowing down the aging process but improving your overall metabolic health. We know this is important because studies have shown that over 75% of those over 65 do not exercise enough to stay healthy.

But, the key is to understand the type of exercise that will give you the greatest benefit for the time invested. If we had to engage in hard physical labor for our work we wouldn't need to exercise. Formal exercise is only needed because most of us have long ago stopped engaging in manual labor. Modern society has allowed us to obtain food and shelter with relatively little effort. So, we need exercise to compensate for this if we hope to optimize our physical health.

I want to share my experience with you so you don't make the same mistakes I did 50 year ago. To me the evidence is crystal clear: As you age you need to engage in some type of resistance training to compensate for the degeneration that typically accompanies aging and decreased physical activity. You can do cardio if you have the time, but not at the expense of building lean muscle mass. This is largely because aging accelerates muscle loss.

Understanding the Hazards of Sarcopenia

The medical term for age-related muscle loss is sarcopenia. Sarcopenia is derived from two Greek words: sarx (flesh) and penia (poverty). So, as you get older you will invariably start losing muscle mass, and if you don't engage in resistance exercises, you will likely suffer metabolic diseases as well.

An estimated 25% of 60-year-olds have sarcopenia, and nearly two-thirds of those 80 years and older have lost serious amounts of muscle mass, which threatens a healthy lifespan and cuts

down on your independence and quality of life. Sarcopenia leads to many functional limitations, including difficulties in walking, climbing stairs and carrying objects. The penalties of this functional decline include falls, disability, institutionalization and even death.

One of the reasons I'm committed to lifelong exercise is because both of my parents died from frailty, and I'm determined to avoid sarcopenia, which took them prematurely. This was a powerful motivation for me to deeply study frailty so I could avoid their fate.

With society aging worldwide, the prevalence of sarcopenia increases the urgent need to establish prevention and intervention strategies. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention now recognizes sarcopenia as an independently reportable medical condition.

Skeletal muscles not only function to generate force and movement, but also play a major role in your metabolism, circulation and cognition, as seen in the following figure. Skeletal muscles also serve an important endocrine function. They secrete special cytokines (i.e., myokines) and transcription factors into the bloodstream, thereby regulating the function of other organs. It's a metabolically active tissue with an important role in the maintenance of metabolic homeostasis.

Sarcopenia Is a Major Driver of Insulin Resistance and Disease

Skeletal muscle is the most abundant tissue in your body, comprising 40% to 55% of your body mass, and is the primary sink of insulin-mediated glucose disposal. Muscle is also the major site for insulin-stimulated glucose uptake, as well as the main energy consumer of fat. After meals, about 80% of glucose is deposited in your skeletal muscle.

The loss of muscle mass with advancing age is thought to be a primary driver of insulin resistance in older adults. Again, this is because

muscle is the major tissue where insulin causes glucose to be absorbed.

But it doesn't end there. Remember, muscle makes up nearly half of your body's tissues, so once your body runs out of sugar in the form of glycogen, it uses fat, especially if you are metabolically flexible. So, muscle is also the main energy user of fat in your body. The declining muscle strength and progressive mobility impairment with age also tends to reduce daily physical activity, which also contributes to metabolic dysfunction.

The loss of resilience as a result of sarcopenia is underappreciated as a major factor in the ability to recover from life's inevitable challenges. It is clear that elderly with low muscle mass experience delayed recovery, and have higher rates of complications and infections following surgery, greater drug toxicity and higher disease-specific and all-cause mortality.

Sarcopenia also predicts both the risk for community-acquired pneumonia in the elderly, as well as 90-day mortality in patients suffering from aspiration pneumonia.

Muscle Play a Role in Your Immune Function Too

Muscle is increasingly recognized as an organ with immune regulatory properties. As such, skeletal muscle cells modulate immune function by signaling through different soluble factors, cell surface molecules or cell-to-cell interactions. It is also speculated that sarcopenia contributes to immunosenescence — the gradual deterioration of your immune system — which is a leading cause of death in the elderly.

Additionally, recent reviews found strong evidence that frailty due to sarcopenia is a risk factor for adverse outcomes, such as longer hospital stay, functional decline at discharge and both in-hospital and medium, lower quality of life, and long-term mortality.

My Strategy and Recommendation to Combat

Sarcopenia

So, what can we do about this progressive decline in muscle loss that sets you up for frailty and metabolic catastrophe? Why, exercise, of course. But here's a little-known fact: Despite the well-known benefits of resistance training, less than 10% of those under the age of 75 in the United States participate in muscle-strengthening activities.

I believe one of the main reasons for this low rate of participation is that over half of those who do exercise engage in conventional resistance training end up getting injured. Another reason is that conventional strength training is considerably less effective in healthy older adults than in young adults.

This blunted anabolic response to exercise training in older individuals is likely a result of the age‐related decline in muscle fiber perfusion.

This has been known for a long time. Seventeenth century physician Dr. Thomas Sydenham, who is known as the "English Hippocrates," recognized nearly 400 years ago that vascular health and aging are interdependent and inversely related. His famous quote is: "A man is as old as his arteries."

Microcirculation is the term used to describe blood flow through the capillaries. The main function of the microcirculation is the delivery of oxygen and nutrients to tissues while removing CO2, metabolic debris and toxins. Researchers believe this is related to a decrease in muscle fiber microcirculation of Type II muscle fibers and their associated stem cells.

Studies have shown that Type II muscle fiber-associated stem cells are located at a greater distance to their nearest capillary in older compared with younger men. There are a large number of circulating growth factors that are regulators of stem cell function and the delivery of these signals to activate your muscle stem cells and promote muscle growth relies on how close they are to the capillaries.

Once your microcirculation becomes compromised with age, Type II muscle fibers and their associated stem cells will be unable to receive enough nutrients and oxygen. Thankfully, there is a solution to this dilemma, and it is called blood flow restriction (BFR) or KAATSU in Japan, which is where it originated.

I'm very proud to say that I've come even further since then and, now, even approaching 70, I've been able to regularly set personal records with some of the lifts that I'm doing, and have deadlifted four plates, which is 405 pounds.

Without doubt, building muscle is one of the most important strategies to improve and safeguard your health, especially as you age. You need protein reserves to survive serious disease, and most of your protein is stored in muscle. If you have very little muscle, you're going to pass away prematurely because you have no amino acid reserves.

As mentioned, your muscle is also a primary regulator of your metabolism. It's a primary site for glucose disposal because of the GLUT4 insulin receptors embedded in the muscle cell membranes. These receptors lower your glucose levels after a meal and decrease your risk for diabetes. It also interfaces with your immune system and helps optimize it.

If you take away one tip from this article, let it be this — it is rarely too late to start resistance training. You can build muscle mass after 60, which is about when I started and, earlier in 2022, as you can see in the video above, I set a new personal record in the leg press for 600 pounds, a significant improvement over the 400-pound deadlift I did in 2021.

How did I do it? That's the focus of this article, and the great news is that virtually anyone can use this strategy, even if you're older, like me, or already a bit frail, or have previously experienced exercise injuries.

The BEST Strategy I Know of

to Increase Muscle Size

There are loads of ways to increase your muscle mass but they mostly involve moving, pushing or pulling heavy weights or resistance bands. The problem with this strategy is that if you are not in good shape, and especially if you are elderly, there is a very high likelihood that you will get injured. In most cases, it is not if you will get injured but when.

The answer to this problem is an exercise strategy known as BFR or KAATSU. As the name implies, BFR involves modifying the arterial inflow and venous outflow while you're working the muscle by placing an inflatable band around the extremity. It is not like a tourniquet that stops all your blood flow, which is dangerous.

BFR was developed by Dr. Yoshiaki Sato of Japan about 50 years ago. In Japan, where it's widely popular, it's known as KAATSU, meaning "training with added pressure." However since Sato does not speak or write English, the first article published about it in the U.S. was about 25 years ago.

Conventional resistance training typically uses resistance at 70% to 85% of your one-rep max, i.e., the maximum amount of weight you can lift only one time. Since this weight is relatively heavy and close to your limit, injuries are almost guaranteed.

BFR is different, as it is a low-intensity resistance training, using weights that are just 20% to 35% of your one-rep max. With weights this light, your risk of injury is largely eliminated. In many elderly and frail individuals, weights of just 1 or 2 pounds, or no weight other than your body, are all that is needed to achieve the benefits.

BFR Mimics Heavy Weight Training Without Any of the Risks

BFR training is frequently misunderstood as simply a conventional resistance training program with the addition of resistance bands. Nothing

could be further from the truth.

Because the exercise is done with such low weights, there's far less muscle fiber trauma and damage, especially relative to conventional strength training. This means you are able to recover much quicker, so you don't have to dig yourself out of a hole the next few days. In most cases, you can exercise different body parts nearly every day and rapidly attain the metabolic and physical benefits.

To understand the mechanism of BFR you need to know that you have two basic types of muscle fibers. First you have slow-twitch oxidative (Type I) fibers designed for low-intensity long-lasting contractions. Secondly, you have fast-twitch glycolytic (Type II) fibers designed for high-intensity shortduration contractions. When you lose muscle, it typically occurs as a reduction in Type II muscle fibers.

If you are going to increase muscle mass and strength in anyone, but especially the elderly, it is important to activate Type II muscle fibers during training, since these fibers have been shown to be far more responsive to growing muscle than Type I fibers and are generally much larger.

Weight training done at low weights will not activate Type II fibers — unless it's done with BFR. Type I fibers are relatively more sensitive than type II fibers to hypoxia (low blood oxygen), as they have a greater oxygen consumption at rest compared to Type II fibers. BFR training takes advantage of this difference. Producing a relatively hypoxic environment in your muscles causes premature fatigue of the Type l fibers, thus forcing your body to rely on Type II fibers to continue the exercise.

At the same time, you're also activating their associated muscle stem cells. This is likely one of the main mechanisms by which BFR can trigger muscle growth and prevent or prevent or treat sarcopenia. Simply moving light weights with high repetition without BFR will not engage Type II fibers because there is plenty of oxygen for

the Type I fibers to work. Hence, the fast-twitch Type II fibers just aren't called into action.

How BFR Affects Your Muscles and Overall Health

When you exercise and activate your Type 2 fibers with BFR, your muscles will generate a waste product called lactic acid or lactate, which is responsible for much of the metabolic magic. Activating Type 2 fibers also lowers the pH of the muscles. This is not because of lactic acid, but more related to the release of extra protons released in generating energy.

Both lactate and proton accumulation are potent stimulators of growth hormone and insulin-like growth factor (IGF-1), which in turn leads to muscle growth. IGF-1 is a hormone that helps

manage growth hormone (GH) in the body. It's typically made by your liver, which is the largest contributor to IGF1 circulating in your blood. However, when your liver secretes IGF-1, it will not act on those tissues that have capabilities of producing the hormone themselves, such as skeletal muscle.

Interestingly, it is not the circulating levels of IGF-1 in your blood that cause your muscles to grow but, rather, the IGF-1 produced by your muscles when engaged in exercises like BFR, as that's the key determinant for switching on the anabolic muscle building pathways.

While high levels of IGF-1 in your blood will inhibit autophagy and decrease your longevity,45 this does not appear to be the case when you increase IGF-1 in your muscle using

anaerobic exercises like BFR. This IGF1 does not leak out into your blood to suppress autophagy.

BFR will not only will add solid muscle mass, but also significantly increase your strength and endurance while reducing your body fat. For most people who are not competitive athletes, it's really the only form of resistance training they need.

Competitive athletes also seem to benefit from BFR, but they would need to combine it with conventional strength training. In short, BFR works on a very simple principle: It tricks your body into believing that it's moving far heavier weights than you're actually using, and as a result generates compensatory metabolic responses, further detailed below.

Preheat oven to 350° and prepare 12-14 cupcake liners in tins.

Beat together the eggs and sugar until very pale yellow.

Add the remaining ingredients, except filling mixture, and mix until just combined. Don’t overmix.

Fill the cupcake cups one-third full (about 1 teaspoon). Sprinkle with the filling mixture and swirl. Fill the rest of the muffin cups with batter. In a separate bowl, combine the streusel topping ingredients with a fork. Evenly top each muffin. Bake for 28-30 minutes. Insert a toothpick to test for doneness. Serve.

TIP: These freeze great in a ziploc bag or airtight container.

CITRUS JAM

Fruity and delicious, swirl this into your tea, or top it on your favorite cookie or dessert.

Ingredients:

4 ripe, large oranges

2 ripe, large red grapefruit

2 ripe lemons

¾-1 cup granulated sugar

Directions:

Peel the oranges, and cut crosswise into thin slices (make sure to remove any of the white segments). Place in a large, heavy saucepan. Cut the grapefruits, lemons and limes into supremes (peel the fruit, cut off the two heads, then run a sharp knife on the edge of each membrane to pop out the fruit segment). Add the fruit segments to the pan, along with its juice from the discarded membranes. Stir in the sugar and set over a medium flame, stirring frequently, until the sugar is dissolved. Let the mixture come to a simmer.

Cover the pot and lower the heat to a gentle simmer. Cook for about 1-4 hours, stirring frequently, until mixture is thickened.

PISTACHIO LEMON BISCOTTI WITH CITRUS JAM

On a quest for fresh, light, and citrusy dessert- this Tuscan-inspired biscotti was born. Enjoy it with your coffee or crumble it into a ‘Pesach granola’ on top of homemade vanilla ice cream, and citrus jam. Enjoy!

Yield: About 20-24 biscotti

Ingredients:

3 eggs

1 cup sugar

⅔ cup oil

3 tablespoons freshly-squeezed lemon juice

2 teaspoons Baking Powder (optional)

3 ½ cups Almond Flour

½ cup Potato Starch

½ cup chopped pistachios

pinch of salt

Directions

Preheat your oven to 350° and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Beat eggs and sugar until light and fluffy (around 3 minutes). Slowly add in the oil and lemon juice. Next, add in the baking powder, almond flour, potato starch, chopped pistachios, and salt. Mix until combined.

Wet your hands with water. Divide the batter in half, forming a rectangular loaf on either side of the baking sheet. (The batter is slightly runny and works best with moistened hands)

Bake for 35–40 minutes. Let cool for about 5-10 minutes, then cut into one-inch slices.

The biscotti will be soft and chewy at this point. To make it crispier, return to the oven and bake the slices for about 5 minutes on each side.

CARROT CAKE COOKIES

The best part of every muffin is its crispy, chewy top. Here, we took the old classic and made it into cookies. So you can enjoy every bite, with your coffee or on-the-go.

Yield: 24 cookies

Ingredients:

3 egg whites

¾ cup sugar

3-4 medium carrots, grated (about 1 cup)

2 cups almond flour

½ teaspoon cinnamon

¼ teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon grated ginger

½ tablespoon vanilla sugar (optional)

½ lemon, juiced

Directions

Preheat your oven to 350° and line 2 baking sheets with parchment paper.

In a medium bowl, whisk together the almond flour, cinnamon, and salt to combine.

In a large bowl, whisk the egg whites and sugar, until smooth. Add in the rest of the ingredients and mix with a fork until a smooth dough forms.

Using a 1 tablespoon cookie scoop, form small balls and place them 2 inches apart on the cookie sheet (about 12 balls per pan).

Bake for 18-25 minutes, until the cookies have spread out and their edges are golden. Let cool. Top with your favorite parve frosting or a dollop of cream cheese frosting.

HOMEMADE ALMOND FLOUR

Add blanched almonds (slivered or whole) to a high-speed blender or food processor and blend on high until a fine, powdery flour forms.

Check your blender for bits of nuts and continue blending, occasionally removing your blender from the base and shaking to ensure all almonds are well blended. Store in a jar or airtight container.

Refined starch is a top contributing factor to weight gain. Keeping away from refined starch is tricky when it’s incorporated into healthy foods. Surprisingly, breaded cutlets are a bigger cause of obesity than pizza. Being careful and conscious with specific ingredients can make all the difference to health and well- being.

MOCK BREADED CUTLETS

INGREDIENTS:

1 pack thin cutlets

1 cup almond flour

3 eggs

1 cup ground nuts

pinch of salt

INSTRUCTIONS:

Preheat oven to 375°. Place eggs and salt in a bowl. Beat with a fork. Prepare separate bowls of almond flour and ground nuts. Dip cutlets into flour, beaten eggs, then ground nuts. Place coated cutlets into well-greased pan. Bake uncovered 30-40 minutes. Flip cutlets halfway through baking.

Reduce Pre-Pesach Stress Through Understanding Hilchos Pesach

Diminishing Pre-Pesach stress begins with knowledge of this basic principle: The Halochos of eating Chometz are very stringent, but the Halochos of OWNING chometz are much less so.

Below are Torah scholars' directives regarding owning chometz and cleaning for Pesach. (Notes in parenthesis and brackets are explanatory comments. Also, italics and bold are added for emphasis.)

RAV CHAIM PINCHOS SCHEINBERG Zatzal, Rosh Yeshiva of Torah Ohr in Yerushalayim, taught the following:

• If, during the year, chometz is not brought into a place, that place does not have to be cleaned out or checked for chometz

• The general obligation to check for & get rid of crumbs does not apply if the crumbs are less than the size of a k’zayis [an olive] and are dirty or spoiled enough to deter a person from eating them. (A kzayis is around 1/2 - 1 ounce.)

• The cleaning product (regular household cleanser) must spoil the crumbs (only) slightly, to the extent that people would refrain from eating them.

Rabbi Barclay and Rabbi Jaeger, authors of the Guideline Halacha Series, write that there are two mitzvos connected to the possession of chometz:

• Not to see chometz or find it in one’s possessions (Lo Yeraeh and Lo Yemotzei)

• To dispose of it. (Tashbisu)

According to Torah law, it is enough to either get rid of the chometz, or to declare it null and void. Our sages required both for three reasons:

• Our declaration should be sincere.

• We shouldn’t accidentally eat chometz (that’s lying around)

• In order that overlooked chometz be included.

“If the chometz is dirty, then only a piece that is the size of a k’zayis (or larger) must be removed.”

“If the chometz is edible, then even a smaller [than a k’zayis] piece that one may be tempted to eat must be removed.”

“Therefore, when cleaning for Pesach one must remove small pieces of edible chometz and large pieces of inedible chometz.”

Books: Rabbi Barclay and Rabbi Jaeger also write that there is no need to check books, except for books that will be brought to the table. Those books should be either new or well cleaned.

Bentchers used the whole year should not be

used on Pesach; they should be put away with the chometz because they often contain crumbs and are difficult to clean. (Nowhere is it mentioned that the chometz crumbs have to be removed or that the bentchers and zemiros books have to be sold, even though chometz crumbs remain in them. The only rule is that they should be put away so that they are not accidentally brought to the table on Pesach.)

Toys that will be used on Pesach should be cleaned with soapy water and checked. Other toys should be put away. Special toys for Pesach are recommended.

Clothing that won’t be worn on Pesach needs only a quick check. “Since they are not going to be worn, there is no concern that one may eat any crumbs that are there. Small crumbs do not have to be removed since there is no prohibition to own them during Pesach.”

Light switches and door handles should be cleaned when necessary (After we touch them, we may touch Pesach food, and the laws forbidding eating chometz are most stringent, as mentioned. Pens, pencils, combs, and hair brushes which might have some sticky residue might also be in the same category.).

Carpets: Vacuuming a carpet cleans it sufficiently, since any remaining crumbs are not fit for eating.

Toaster: Since a toaster will not be used on Pesach, it is sufficient to remove loose crumbs by shaking the toaster well and putting it away with the chometz utensils. The chometz pots do not have to be scrubbed. Some have the custom to check the pots for chometz

Rabbi Yaakov Zev Smith, a maggid shiur for Irgun Shiurei Torah, explains: “The Gemara says that after bedikas chometz one still needs to annul the chometz. This requirement is not because of crumbs which may be scattered in the house; rather, it is a protection against a big piece of chometz. The reason we do not worry about crumbs is that since they are on the floor they have no importance to us and are “selfannulled” (Pesachim 6b).”

He explains further that the Chayei Adam (119:6) is of the opinion that one must clean crevices of crumbs within hand’s reach. This is not because of the prohibition to see or have chometz in one’s possession – but because we are concerned that one might inadvertently eat them”.1

The Pri Chadash (444-4) and the Igros Moshe (1145) disagree with this stringency.

However, the commonly held custom is to follow the Chayei Adam’s ruling and clean out all easily accessible places where crumbs might be found.

The Chazon Ish (122:8) cites the Gra in stating that crumbs caught between the floorboards do not have to be removed. Even if there are many crumbs that add up collectively to a k’zayis, they are not a problem halachically, because they are dried out and unappetizing.

“The requirement for chometz to actually be unfit for canine consumption (inedible to a dog) only applies to a k’zayis.” (Magen Avraham; Mishnah Berurah).

Rabbi Smith continues: What about chometz that is bigger than a crumb yet smaller than a k’zayis? An example might be a pretzel, or half a cookie. “While small crumbs are insignificant and are automatically nullified, these bits of food (which are identifiable things) are in a category of their own.”

These pieces of chometz (larger than a crumb yet smaller than a k’zayis) should be removed. (Shulchan Aruch Harav; Mishnah Berurah)

Extra effort in cleaning away chometz is part of a heilige minhag. In practice, we give the greatest energy to areas that our Pesach food and our hands will touch/contact on Pesach2 . (This helps prevent the possibility of eating any chometz on Pesach. And while this is true, give careful note to the following paragraph.)

This minhag must be practiced according to each person’s strength and energy. And only up to where it does not take away from health, safety, and joy in the Heilige Yom Tov.

Anything written above should not be used by husbands and children as an excuse for not helping make the house clean and shining, as well as kosher for Pesach. It is indeed part of the signature of Pesach to have a home that is extraspecial clean. The wholehearted participation— without criticism—of husband and children, makes a big difference and brings much joy to the Yom Tov.

May we all be zocheh to clean and prepare for the Yom Tov of Pesach without excessive strain or fear, but with anticipation and happiness. A Worthwhile Investment

Mendy was a regular yungerman living in a very irregular area, somewhere in the Midwest of the United States. He joined a fledgling settlement that never really took off and his family was one of the few Yiddishe families in the city.

Mendy got a job working as a lumber salesman. Several of his acquaintances also worked in the lumber industry, but they weren’t in the field long enough to know the secrets of the trade. Since Mendy wanted to conduct his business without any internet use, he hired a consultant who had worked in the lumber industry for many decades.

Pete was an expert. He knew which wood was top-quality, which types of wood sell well, and which lumber companies deal honestly and efficiently. He was paid to keep the yungerleit in the know, by sharing his expertise and keeping his finger on the pulse of the on-line lumber market. Frequently enough, Pete warned Mendy to stay away from certain suppliers or to cash in on a new type of wood that would take the market by storm.

Mendy never needed to access the internet. It wasn’t easy but he knew that his

“We ordered a huge shipment from A.J. Lumber (not its real name),” Mendy exulted. “The prices are great and the wood is top quality.”

They’re going to be slapped with an American lawsuit in the near future, and their products will be held up or even banned. You won’t be able to sell that lumber on American soil.”

Mendy was shocked, but he knew that Pete had access to inside information. He quickly called A.J. Lumber to cancel his order, which they agreed to do.

Just one day later, the news went viral. Claims were made against A.J. Lumber and their products were banned in the United States. Many lumber companies tried to cancel their orders, but A.J. Lumber refused. They had to swallow the huge monetary loss caused by this unforeseen lawsuit.

Only Mendy, that earnest yungerman who invested money to avoid internet usage, was spared the financial loss. Had he handled his own on-line affairs, it is highly improbable that he would have pulled out in time…

Firefighters in Britain responded to a home to rescue a horse that had fallen into its owner's swimming pool and was unable to get itself out. Firefighters arrived to find the horse had fallen through the cover of the pool, which the crews removed with assistance of the property owner. The horse was found standing uninjured in the shallow end of the pool, but the animal was unable to climb the stairs to get out of the water. The horse was sedated and the rescuers used a harness and a tractor to lift the horse back to solid ground. The animal was examined by the veterinarian before being returned to its stable.
