Recap: Tehilla visits her mother in the hospital. Her father realizes that Tehilla isn't showing up to school and that she was rejected by all three high schools. Ahuva's mother tries to take her shopping to have a conversation with her.

Tehilla receives a rejection letter from her camp. She goes to the Public Library to read up about strokes.

CHAPTER FIVE:

“Hey! How are you doin’ Tehilla?”

Was it a good sign that the librarian knew my name already? I ignored the thought as I showed her my library card.

The next half hour was spent searching for books that discussed different recommended therapies for stroke victims, what can be done to prevent strokes, and what causes a stroke in the first place.

I stared at the black numbers and letters dancing across the pages. There were so many options and loads of ideas. But one common thread pierced painfully in my subconscience. Stress. Every book that I had skimmed through agreed that strokes were caused by stress.

My mother had been stressed. I hadn’t known about it at all. Then again, I had just dropped a bombshell on that fateful day of the stroke. Could my news have caused such destruction?

I tried reading up about that, too. Could the shock of unhappy tidings cause a stroke?

Thankfully, most sources agreed that it wasn’t usually the case.

But what if this time it had been? Was there a way to really know? ***

“Mrs. Korn, I am not sure what you are talking about.” I gazed into my principal’s face.

“I have been the most obedient and wonderful student since I entered the walls of Ateres Tzipora. I can’t think of even one reason to justify all three rejections.” It had taken a lot of confidence and resolve to broach this subject with my principal. After all, it was my mother’s job, not mine, to ensure that I had a high school to attend.

“Look, I will be frank with you, Tehilla.” Mrs. Epstein sighed and looked at me in the eye. “We have been receiving rather unflattering reports regarding your home life. I didn’t want to believe it myself, I thought so highly

of you.”

“Home life? I got rejected before my mother landed in the hospital.”

“I mean to say- things happening out of school. Off school grounds, not necessarily at home.” An uncomfortable feeling wormed its way into my throat. “Can you please give me examples?

I am not sure what Mrs. Epstein is referring to.” I kept my tone respectful.

“Visiting the Public Library, associating with non-Jewish friends, not dressing appropriately.” The principal spoke in a measured tone of voice, betraying the bombshell she had just dropped on me.

I felt her clever eyes on me, scanning my face to read my reaction. She was waiting for my eyes to widen in shock and disbelief.

My eyes glazed over as I focused on the bird flying away from outside Mrs. Epstein’s window.

“Is your silence just confirmation of what we already know?”

With my eyes still following the lone bird, I whispered, “I don’t know.” ***

“Push me! Higher! Higher!” I exerted all my might and pushed the swing. It flew out of my hands, and scraped the skyline as it glided across the sky. My third-grade camper giggled.

“Me, too! I also want to fly!” A chorus of “push me-s!” rang out as I ran from swing to swing, transporting my campers into fantasy land. Somehow, no matter how elaborate the activity, the playground seemed to surpass every other activity in day camp. I didn’t mind, even on a hot day like today. If it took sweating and pushing to make my campers happy, I would do it. It wasn’t like I had an excess of happiness to share. The swings were an easy way to spread joy.

My hands automatically pushed the girls in robotic motions. I stopped for a minute and leaned my head back to catch the sunshine. I felt the warm rays spread over my face and sink into my skin.

In the distance, I heard soft music playing, notes holding hands to form an ethereal tune. The lyrics sort of followed, dancing to the melody in a beautiful voice, creating a masterpiece. My eyes closed, lashes softly resting on my cheekbones. My chest heaved up and down as the song replayed itself in my head several times.

“Tehilla!” I jumped up. “You stopped pushing us!”

“Here I come!” I pushed the swing and let my arms fly in the air.

I couldn’t wait to get home to write down the new song.

“Ephraim, I think that I need to be the one to tell her.”

Ephraim stared at her limp body, still wondering why he was agreeing to this. As usual, his wife read his thoughts. “You think I should stay here.” It was more of a statement than a question, but Ephraim grabbed the opportunity.

“Chava, it will be so hard for the children to see you like this. Are you really sure that you want them to look at their mother as an incapacitated woman, who needs help to simply stand up on her own?” Ephraim’s voice held anguish that ran deeper than what he was saying.

Chava didn’t even wait to formulate an answer. “You know that there is no other way. For the rest of their lives, yes, they will be more ablebodied than their own mother. Instead of me being the one to help them, they will have to help me. And yes, as painful as that reality is, our lives can no longer follow the path of our relatives and friends. Do you know what? I believe that it will only do our children good. They will grow up as more empathetic and respectful people.”

Catching the doubt on her husband’s face, she confidently added, “Mark my words. Not only will our children respect me, they will respect me more than ever before!”

There was no more denying the truth. A small part of Ephraim wanted her to stay right here in the rehab. When Chava was here, at least he could pretend that life will get back to normal one day. Although he wouldn’t say it, inside, he knew that if Chava remained in the rehab, there was hope that she would return back home completely healed. As soon as Chava came home in her current state, her stroke would become their new life. And Ephraim was terrified of the new normal. ***

Putting words to pen and paper was an old habit of mine. Somehow, I found it soothing to let the words flow straight off my mind and bleed into the paper. It was easier than verbalizing, and easier than thinking. After I

finished writing, I always felt the same relief of a load off my shoulders. It was the safest place to confide in- it would never tell my secret. This time, the words had been waiting the entire day. My pen made swift strokes, neatly filling up the lined paper, words forming a beautiful poem. My breath caught in my throat. It was so poetic, so sincere, so…me. I proudly read the words aloud to my silent room:

Feet slowly push into the air, Determination on your face

The feeling of anticipation

Rising as you soar

Push, swing, Push, swing Higher and higher.

The security, the adult, pushing at your side.

Soaring high

Aiming high

Letting security be your guide

But you know

It is true

That final push Must come From YOU.

It would take many years and lots of water under the bridge until I would actually appreciate the depth of what I had just written. But for now, this poem was comforting enough, secure with the knowledge that no matter what happened, it was ultimately up to me to make choices and grow.

“Home Sweet Home” Chava’s eyes glazed over when she caught sight of the poster hanging on the door. It was adorned with pictures of swarming bees and honey. She leaned forward on her cane, and allowed her husband to push the door open.

Moti was first to greet her. His little eyes widened at the sight of her cane. Bursting into tears, he buried his face in his father’s feet. Chava tried to ignore the hollow pit that was widening in her stomach.

Chayala came next, a bit confused by all of the commotion. “Ma!” she exclaimed, throwing her arms around her mother’s feet. Chava tried to hug her back, but her cane really was in the way. Her husband stole a glance at the kitchen.

Where was Tehilla? They both thought it at once.

The kitchen was laden with a festive tablecloth, and a four-course meal was simmering on the stove. But the cook, the superstar who had arranged this evening to perfection, down to the small bags of potpourri waiting on her mother’s bed, was nowhere to be found. ***

“So you are Pori Sternstein.”

It was unnecessary, really, as she was holding her resume, and only Pori was scheduled to be here.

“You worked at Riverside Crossings for four years?”

Pori nodded, her plastic smile firmly etched into her face.

“And you would like to become a high school teacher?”

Pori nodded again and then thought better of it. “After sitting behind a desk and gaining a lot of interpersonal relationship skills, I decided it was time for a more meaningful way to utilize these skills.” She could tell that Rebbetzin Cohen was appropriately impressed. “I specifically chose your school because I just love the way that you run this incredible place. Unsurpassed warmth and devotion, no ego involved, always growing and watching the girls blossom.”

Now Rebbetzin Cohen was smiling. “You got me, Pori!”

Pori smiled back. “May I ask which positions you have open for the upcoming year?”

“We have the Chumash for tenth grade, Navi for ninth….and wait! This looks perfect, we need a Hashkafa teacher for ninth graders, and we would love it to be someone who can also coordinate the ninth grade extra-curricular activities. So, it is two salaries, as well. Does that speak to you at all?”

Speak to her? Pori could hardly believe what she was hearing. This job was made-to-order for her. This job was sitting and waiting for her to take it and run with it.

Rebbetzin Cohen hardly needed a model lesson. Pori insisted on handing over a model written lesson plan, and finally, after reading it, she looked up.

“Pori, what can I say? I am impressed. I already spoke to the references on your resume, and honestly, they couldn’t have raved enough about you. You have so much to offer, and I am

honored and privileged to offer you this position. Our ninth graders will be so fortunate if you accept.”

An hour later, logistics in place, Pori stepped out, contract in hand. Things had moved so fast, she hardly had time to register that her lifelong dream had just come to fruition.

Clutching the contract and walking home under the soft mid-afternoon rays of the sun, Pori thought to herself, Is this what it feels like when they talk about dreams coming true?

A small voice whispered back, No Pori. This isn’t what they talk about. You have too many dreams that are far more important than a simple job. You need so much more in order for you to say that your dreams have come true. And when they come true, you will know that your miserable journey is over. You won’t have to question it at all.

Ahuva swung her day-camp bag over her shoulder and began walking home. It had been another one of those exhausting days that left her wondering why she wasn’t in sleepaway camp. It also reminded her of the painful answer: lack of funds. At least this way, she was earning money. In the distance, she spotted Tehilla, turning into her block. She quickly looked away. She still felt the sting of their conversation, as if it happened today. Time couldn’t heal a friendship of ten years. Time didn’t do justice to the unfair way that their bond had been severed.

Is life fair? Is anything that happened to me fair? Crying over spilled milk won’t help. A single tear fell from her eye and laced her cheek. Spilled milk can be wiped up. Our friendship can’t. If there was a way to prove my innocence, I would do it. But what if in the process I uncover something else? The mistrust will always be there. The milk can be cleaned, but no one will ever be able to drink that fresh, frothy cup of milk ever again. The aftereffects can be taken care of, but no matter what, the friendship will be forever stained.

S S STRATEGIES FOR OPTIMUM SUCCESS SETTING TEACHERS UP FOR SUCCESS

Q: This is my second year teaching third grade and I am really struggling. I have been reading your column and articles for many years and I thought you might be able to give me some suggestions. I know how to teach reading, writing, and math, but I just cannot get my students to listen to me! I thought it might have just been an issue last year because it was my first year, but this year is no better. What can I do?

A: First, I just want to say that it is very brave of you to ask this question. Not many teachers are willing to admit when they are not in control. That said, what many laypeople do not understand is that teachers can know everything there is to know about the subjects they are teaching, but if they cannot control the class, no one learns. To that end, when I work as a mentor for teachers, the first issue

we discuss is classroom management. Below is a short list of the tips that I give teachers struggling with controlling the class: Classroom set up. When students walk into a room, the first thing that they notice is the way the classroom is arranged. Are the seats in neat rows? Are there different stations for different activities? If you are doing group work, are the desks arranged in small clusters? The way that you decorate and organize the room gives a clear message to the students. Preparation. The way students respond to a lesson often corresponds to the preparation that went into the lesson before class. Do you have all the different activity pages photocopied? Are they in neat stacks ready to be handed out? Does each activity match the skill you are trying to instill?

Students know when you are prepared – and they know when you are not prepared. Lack of preparation will lead to breaks and unwanted disruption.

Structure. Each individual lesson should be structured, but so should the whole day. Students should be aware that each day contains a routine such as: reading groups, music, math drills, writing practice, recess, and then silent sustained reading. With the structure in their mind, they will be better prepared to transition from activity to activity. This way, you will not lose them in the gaps between subjects.

Positive phrasing. Every classroom needs rules, but instead of writing, “No calling out,” frame the rules in positive terms as “Raise your hand before speaking.”

You need the rules in order to maintain order, but you also need the positive phrasing

in order to maintain morale in the classroom. If students hear “no” all the time, they will tune it out.

Clear and defined consequences. Once the rules are understood and posted on the wall, students should be informed of the consequences of breaking the rules. These consequences should be uniform and consistently enforced. Recap of Chapter 49

Yosef meets up with Martin in his own house. He screams at Martin to stop following him around, and even after Martin explains who he is, still seems upset at him.

Michoel and Mike finally meet. Mike tells Michoel that he's here to be cured of his anorexia, and that this place does excellent work treating both physical and mental illnesses. Michoel decides that he wants to bring Yosef to get treated there. Mike, who has received Becky's letter, really wants to bring Becky there to get treated too, but Dr. Jerry had dismissed the whole letter and idea.

CHAPTER FIFTY

This time, the conversation between Michoel and Dr. Jerry did not take place in the regular office. The doctor took him out to the lawns, to a quiet corner that Michoel had not known existed until today. The truth was, he didn’t know much about anything that was going on in this place. There was too much that he didn’t know, and he wondered if it would even be right to bring Yosef here. He was not the type who bought every word he was told, even if the principles of the method sounded interesting. He’d always been suspicious.

The doctor sat on a wooden bench, folded his right leg and rested it on his left one. He took out a cigarette from an unfamiliar brand and lit up. “How are you acclimating, Michoel?”

“Thank G-d. But I want to recover and return to my country.”

“Israel.”

“Yes.”

“Is someone waiting for you at home?”

“At home, no. But I have extended family members who are very devoted to me.”

“Where were they until now?” The doctor took a long drag on the cigarette, but did not offer one to his patient. Michoel tried to remember if the flavor of smoking was familiar to him. He sensed that it was, but in the very distant past. He’d quit smoking years ago— maybe with the aid of a book of some type?

“Isn’t it a shame for your lungs?” he asked as he stared at the rings of smoke. The doctor just smiled.

“Where were your family members until now?” Dr. Jerry asked again.

“I’m a lone-wolf type,” Michoel explained. A second later, he felt a cautionary chill creeping slowly up his spine, so he continued carefully: “My family always tries to be there for me, and they worry about me, but

I like my independence.” He sighed. “I travel a lot, and my house is set up for that, since I once had a breakin, and another time, I had a leak that caused a lot of damage and no one knew about it.”

“How is your house set up for all that?”

“I installed a whole home-management system, with the help of a relative of mine. It all works without a hitch even when I’m not there—the electricity and all the other things.”

The doctor seemed curious. “What do you mean, ‘the other things’?”

“For example, I usually order pizza every Tuesday. If I’m traveling, there’s a homeless guy who goes to the store to get it instead of me.” His forehead suddenly creased. “I must find out what’s going on with him.”

“But how do you order pizza where you’re not there?”

“I have a whole system of automatic messages, on my house phone, my cell phone, my home computer…”

Michoel chuckled. “There’s a recording each week of my order to the pizza shop.”

The doctor was quiet for a long while. “So, what does this all have to do with your devoted family?” he asked finally.

“Well, except for that relative who helped me with the whole system, my family doesn’t always know if I’m home or not. They were probably sure that I was continuing my life as usual, and just wasn’t in the mood to talk to them, so they didn’t try to find me even when I disappeared.” He nodded, almost to himself.

“I’m worried about one of them.” The words escaped his mouth before he had actually decided to say something.

“You’re worried about someone in your family?” The doctor raised an eyebrow. “Or do you mean to say that he’s worried about you?”

“Well, he might also be worried about me, if his mother shared with him what I told her about what happened to me. But right now, I’m worried about him.” Michoel sighed again. “He’s a sweet boy who suffers from schizophrenia, unfortunately. He’s usually pretty wellmanaged and functions just fine, but lately, it seems something has not been right.”

“He’s been having outbursts?”

“No. If I understood correctly, the issue is not symptomatic of his chronic condition; it’s more that he’s in a depressive state.” He shook his head, wanting to say something else, but ultimately deciding to be

quiet.

“His mother told you now about the history of his illness, or do you remember it yourself?”

“I remember it.”

“So you’re progressing really well,” the man noted cautiously. He marked something down in his purple binder.

“Certainly with regard to other people.” Michoel smiled, with a trace of bitterness. In his view, he was progressing fairly well when it came to himself, as well. But for some reason, he had a niggling feeling that he would be better off keeping that information to himself. At least, as long as he wasn’t trusting any of the people here. They should have been looking for his family while he was unconscious, not trying to figure out why they were not looking for him!

“And with regard to your own personal memories, there’s nothing new?”

“I don’t think so.”

“Let’s try to go back to your distant past. You’re a baby, maybe a month old, or even a week. Close your eyes, please.”

Michoel obeyed, allowing the rays of sun to warm his forehead.

“Do you remember something? Feel something?”

He felt one thing: – the tension that he’d been feeling ever since he woke up and found himself here. But he wouldn’t say that. “I’m lying on something soft,” he said in a dreamy voice. “And I hear a pleasant voice, a soothing voice, next to me. My mother, probably.”

“What do you feel when you hear her voice?”

“Like the notes of a sweet tune,” Michoel conjured. “Maybe there is a music box of sorts playing near me; I think I saw it in the photos.”

“Not what you saw in photos. Photos are contemptible things. They forcibly inject into our brains forgotten and fake externalities. Anyway, what do you hear now?

The tune from that music box?”

“I think so.” Michoel was very careful with every word he uttered. “Or maybe the tune is from a different source, like from an old record player.”

“Can you identify notes? Do you remember any part of that tune?”

“No. I’m not musical.”

“But can you sing it for me, or hum it?”

Michoel’s forehead creased with exertion. Maybe

he should hum something like “Old McDonald Had a Farm”? Better not to. “It’s hard...”

“What is happening next to you? Who is there?”

“My father and mother.”

“What are they doing?”

“They’re…talking.”

“Do you hear what they are saying?”

“No.” There was a limit to what he could make up.

“And how do you feel when you hear their voices?” His imagination had never been particularly fertile. “Good.”

“Do they love you?”

“Very much.” Those were the days when he had been surrounded by loving family members. How much time, and how many events, had transpired since then… Today, there were also people who cared about him, but from afar. If only he could bring someone here!

“I want to bring my nephew here,” he said, and opened his eyes. “I want to feel my family’s love again. You’ve been able to bring me back to those happy days, doctor… My nephew is a good boy, and I want you to help him, too. We care a lot for each other...”

“I’d be happy to get some more details about him. And about his illness,” Dr. Skulholt said as he rose. And to Michoel’s relief, he did not ask any more questions about the older man’s infancy experiences. ***

Dov sat all morning learning the mishnayos that remained in Maseches Demai. Simi called and said she was baking two cakes and that the others were bringing the rest. Dov had promised to buy bourekas. Hinda, for her part, was completely focused on the kitchen plans she was nearly finished working on. Martin sat near the window, reading a book that Dov had recommended, while munching from a bag of Bissli. He didn’t ask any questions. Every so often, he glanced at Dov, and then went back to his book. Dov rose and closed his sefer. “I’m going to Bnei Brak in about twenty minutes, Martin,” he said. “I have a siyum. Would you like to join me?”

“Okay,” Martin said. “Um…what is a siyum?”

“It’s a siyum on the Shishah Sidrei Mishnah,” Dov explained. “On the days marking the passing of deceased people, we try to finish as many masechtos, tractates of the Mishnah, as possible, in memory of the person.”

“Oh,” Martin said, in a tone that tried to sound understanding, but more than gave away the fact that he had no idea what Dov was talking about. “Who passed away?”

At this point, Dov lowered his voice, and Hinda could not hear what he was saying. She also wasn’t interested; there was no need. Just yesterday, Chaya, the woman who had called her for chizuk two weeks ago, had called Hinda again, asking her to start a small support group.

“Just three or four women,” she’d explained hastily. “More than that wouldn’t work for me. Rebbetzin Werner, the one who recommended you to me, said that she’s ready to send us the right type of women for this.”

“The right type of women,” Hinda had echoed. “But we’re all so different, don’t you think?”

“Different and the same,” Chaya had insisted. “Your husband’s children are married. None of mine are. But I’m still sure that both of us can differentiate between those who accept us more and those who are less welcoming, right?”

“Right,” Hinda had agreed.

“And there’s so much that women in our position need help with. For example, how are we supposed to relate to memorial events for the first wife? What do we do about family events on her side of the family? What about yahrtzeits? What about when someone starts talking about her at the Shabbos table, and tells everyone, ‘Ima used to put less dill in the soup; I can’t stand how much of it you put in—it makes the soup bitter’?”

From there, they’d segued into the subject of direct and hostile criticism versus more veiled criticism, and other topics. They never got to discussing practicalities of the group.

She did not know if she was cut out to moderate such a group. Maybe she was. She believed that she had what to contribute to others, and no less than that, to receive from others, too. ***

Martin strapped his seatbelt alongside Dov. “It’s not like I’m gate-crashing or anything, right?”

“I’m the one who invited you,” Dov said placidly. “The question is if you are afraid of the police, or of those people who were looking for you.”

“I think they can easily get to me at your house, if they

wanted to. Apparently, they want to see if I’m going to stop creating turmoil.”

“And you did stop.”

Martin smiled briefly. “Not only that, actually. You know, I’d already stopped all that a few weeks ago, when I was stunned by the accident… But Kornblit later came to me to suggest that I become a collaborator, a mole, so he might still be trying to find me.”

“It’s important that we discuss this subject carefully.” It was Dov who was serious now, despite his normally cheerful demeanor. “And I didn’t want to do it with my wife around, because she didn’t seem to catch much of why you were hiding out in Michoel Perl’s house; she was too hung up on the fact that Michoel really wasn’t home all this time.

“So first of all,” Dov continued, “if you want to know, I found out about the accident you were involved in. Both of the victims are in various stages of recovery now.”

“I’m happy to hear that.”

“But the activities that you were involved in continue incessantly.”

“The ‘price tag’ stuff?”

“Yes. Once every few days, they hear something new. So I’m asking you—is none of that related to you anymore? Are you sure? You told us that you were very involved in these things before.”

“I have no connection to any of that anymore,” Martin said evenly. In truth, he was offended and was trying to conceal his hurt. “After the accident, I left all of it.”

“I’m happy to hear, because you do remember that I’m trusting you.”

“It doesn’t sound like it, actually.”

“I definitely trust you, and it’s also reasonable for me to expect you to justify that trust.” Dov’s voice was quiet. “Otherwise, my wife and I would not be trying so hard to help you.”

Was there a hint there of some kind? Martin wondered if he should murmur a “thank you,” but then decided it might sound sarcastic.

“I’m happy to hear that it really is all behind you,” Dov repeated as he turned the wheel to navigate Haifa’s winding roads. The sea was laid out before them, at the bottom of the slopes, on one side. “And now the question is what you should do from here on. Maybe it would be a good idea to contact a lawyer, and to close

the case as soon as possible.”

Martin rubbed his neck. “I have money for a lawyer. But I don’t know if it will help. I mean, if the police, or the GSS (General Security Service), or I-don’t-knowwho-else, tried to persuade me to accept a deal in order to close the case, and then I refused and fled, it’s possible that they’re too angry at me.”

“And they’ll want to take revenge?”

“I don’t know if it’s revenge, but I don’t think they are going to want to let me off the hook just like that…”

“Let’s say they don’t want to let you off the hook. What will they do? Prosecute you?”

“Maybe.”

“Will the driver of the car that hit the two Arabs agree to testify on your behalf, in that case?”

Martin was quiet. “I haven’t spoken to him since,” he finally said, candidly. “I can try.”

“Do you have his number?”

“Not anymore. I can call directory assistance, but if he is also being followed, the conversation will lead to me very quickly.”

“You can speak from my phone,” Dov suggested. “Or better yet, I’ll ask one of my sons-in-law for their phone when we get to Bnei Brak. In the worst case, the GSS will get to him, and he’ll say he did a favor for a guy and let him make a call.”

“I don’t want to get any of them in trouble,” Martin murmured.

“And you think that I do?” Dov laughed. “I’ll tell my sonin-law what it’s about. He’ll agree without a problem, and might even enjoy the idea. In any case, if the primary threat that came up in the conversation with you was deportation from Israel, it’s hard for me to believe you’ll be put on trial. Either way, speak today with that friend of yours and try to get a feel for what is happening. Then we’ll speak to a good attorney. I need to think who is suitable for this. Once you are exonerated, you can continue life like a free man. Wouldn’t that be amazing?” Dov held Martin’s gaze for a brief moment before turning back to the road ahead of them. “What would be your plans then? Would you want to study something?”

“Yes. I’d like to learn computers better. And also…I want to learn more about Judaism. It’s begun to interest me.”

The Pesach Flour that turns Baked Goods into MAGIC

BIG CHIP PESACH COOKIES

1 Egg

3 Tablespoons Coconut Oil, softened cup Honey

2 teaspoons Pure Vanilla Extract

½ teaspoon Baking Soda

2 ½ cups Wellbee’s Almond Flour

½ cup Shredded Coconut

½ cup Chopped Walnuts

½ cup Chocolate Chips

• Preheat oven to 325˚F.

• Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper.

• In a medium sized bowl, beat egg with fork until frothy. Add coconut oil, honey, and vanilla extract and mix well. Add baking soda and almond flour and mix until combined. Add coconut, walnuts, and chocolate chips.

• Form 2-Tablespoon-sized balls about 2 inches apart on the cookie sheet. Tip: Wear rubber gloves when forming balls to avoid stickiness.

• Bake for 16-18 minutes or until the bottom of the cookies are golden brown.

• Remove cookies from oven, and cool completely.

• Optional (for yummy added crispiness): Reduce oven temp. to 170˚F. Return cookies to the oven, and bake for 1 ½ hours.

Simple Suppers

Suppers with just a few minutes of prep so you can use the time to tackle your to-do lists instead.

GITTY NEUMAN

1 ½ lbs chicken cutlets, cut into nuggets

¼ cup cornstarch

1 tsp salt

Dash black pepper

12 oz frozen mini broccoli

½ cup soy sauce

¼ cup oil

3 Tbsp sugar

2 frozen garlic cubes

Preheat oven to 400°.

Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Place cornstarch, salt and pepper in a large Ziploc bag. Add chicken and shake to coat. Spread chicken on the prepared baking sheet (Discarding leftover cornstarch). Arrange broccoli around the chicken.

In a small bowl combine sauce ingredients and whisk well. Drizzle over the chicken and broccoli.

Bake 25-30 minutes.

Remove from oven and toss so the chicken is coated in the sauce.

Serve with rice or lo mein noodles.

Note: If you cannot find mini broccoli, use regular broccoli cut into bite-sized pieces.

ONE PAN MEAL

4 chicken thighs

20-30 red baby potatoes, washed and halved

1 green squash

1 yellow squash

1 red pepper

1 red onion, optional

Dressing:

½ cup oil

2 tsp salt

2 tsp sugar

2 tsp parsley flakes

½ tsp black pepper

2 tsp onion soup mix

1 tsp paprika

Preheat oven to 400°. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

In a small bowl combine oil, salt, sugar, parsley flakes and black pepper. (The paprika and onion soup mix will be added later.)

Cut vegetables into 1” chunks. Add 3 Tbsp of the dressing. Toss well and place on one end of the baking sheet.

Add onion soup mix and paprika to the remaining dressing.

Arrange chicken and potatoes on the rest of the baking sheet. Baste chicken with some dressing.

Toss the rest of the dressing with the potatoes. Place the potatoes face down in a (mostly) single layer.

Bake for 1 hour-1 hour and 15 minutes.

Tip: You can bake each component in its own 9x13 pan. It will be easier to toss the ingredients this way.

You may need to rely on other support systems to keep you focused on your journey. For example- getting a friend to diet with you, or rewarding yourself with a new accessory you wanted when you lose a significant amount of weight. It is important to understand that you may need to work with a nutritionist or dietician that can constantly support you until your body is in efficient weight loss mode and you get the hang of weight loss. I have loads of clients texting me daily when they are hit with a roadblock, and I am eager to support them, as I understand the difficulties of weight loss. For example, if you are on a weight loss journey and you have a wedding one night, you may need clarity on

your meal plan for that day. Reaching out to someone that you can actually reach- can help you and guide you and when this situation will come up again, you will know how to handle it! Reach out to someone and don’t rely on yourself fully for your success. Find someone you trust and that you can connect to help you out! This can be your spouse, friend, or neighbor as well.

3. You are on a very extreme weight loss plan: Weight loss is a very, very hard struggle. People look for quick fixes when it comes to weight loss. People get desperate to lose weight for an occasion and will take drastic measures to reach their goals. It is important to keep in mind that drastic measures are not realistic and will lead to failure very fast. Getting onto a juicing diet, or a cleansing diet, or a zero-carb diet, is recipe for disaster. There is no way that a busy Jewish wife and mother who has loads of obligations in life can sustain this sort of lifestyle. In my practice, I have 4 “R”s that I always refer back to. They are: Don’t be too RIGID, as you will become RESENTFUL. Be REASONABLE and you will feel RESPECTED. Taking drastic measures will not give you long term success. You cannot lose 20 pounds without losing 1 pound first. Being on a normal and sustainable food plan will give you slower weight loss results but these results will be more sustainable and you will love your weight loss journey as opposed to hating it. Love the process and you will love your results!

4. You have unrealistic expectations. As women, we are naturally hard workers. Be nice to yourself! Your body at age 35, will very probably not look like your body at age 18! And that is ok! Accept that. True, we do not have to walk around carrying a lot of extra weight, but hurting ourselves in the process- trying to look like someone that is not feasible is not fair. Whatever your dream weight loss goal is, add 15 pounds to that and make your goals more realistic and attainable. You can always push yourself harder, but only once you are closer to the realistic goal.

5. Poor lifestyle habits: It is very important to understand that only changing the way you eat, will by far, not give you the weight loss results you crave. Your body needs a lot more than fewer calories for weight loss. Your body needs proper sleep hygiene, movement, better ways to cope with stress, happiness, serenity and feelings of positivity and acceptance! We are not machines! We are humans with a heart! Realize what makes you tick! Realize what makes you feel good! Listen to yourself and see what truly makes you feel happy! Eating a low-calorie diet, but never sleeping, will not allow your body to lose weight as your hunger and satiety hormones, leptin and ghrelin will be out of sync! Let your physical and emotional body work in tandem, give yourself what you need and you will IYH get there!

Line for Ice Cream

I was in a large ice-cream store recently with my pre-teen daughter. It was the second day of the school’s midwinter vacation and we met several of her classmates waiting on line to order.

The store was noisy, busy, and teeming with excitement. We patiently waited our turn, as the customers in front of us deliberated between five different flavors of ice cream.

“Finally!” my daughter exclaimed. “We can place our order!”

There were loads of choices, but she finally made her selection. We went to the cashier to pay the bill, while the order was being prepared at the other side of the store.

“All paid up!” the cashier cheerfully informed us. “It’s a take-home order, right? The bag will be ready in just a few minutes.”

We went to the ice-cream station, where orders were being prepared at a dizzying pace. Every few seconds, a worker called out the name or number of a specific order, and the lucky recipient eagerly accepted the tantalizing package.

We waited and waited…and then waited some more. It seemed like our order had been overlooked or gone missing.

“Excuse me, we’re waiting for

“Soon, soon!” he reassured us, though he obviously had no idea which order I was referring to and whether it had even been processed.

Another worker, looking even more harried than his colleague, shooed us away from the counter.

“You can’t stand here!” he exclaimed, loud enough for everyone to hear. “This counter is designated for online orders!”

My daughter was mortally offended, though she was too refined to express her annoyance aloud.

“Why did he say that?!” she whispered indignantly. “We were waiting on line forever!”

It took me a moment to process her complaint. The worker said that his counter was reserved for online orders – meaning, for those orders that had been submitted online and would be picked up by customers or a delivery service.

My daughter thought he meant that this counter was only for those people who already waited their turn on the long, long line!

Now, a disclaimer. My daughter is living in the digital age of 2023 and knows what the Internet is. She’s definitely heard the term ‘online’, but she knows that it’s for business purposes only. It never dawned on her that someone would actually go online to order something like ice cream!

I hope she maintains that clear distinction…long after her icecream days become just a fond childhood memory.
