What happened to pushing my emotions deep inside my subconsciousness, pressing it into the smallest crevices of my brain, truly believing that it will somehow magically disappear?

My default coping mechanisms sprang to life in the wake of this new crisis.

Deep down, I knew. I knew that what Ta didn’t know was that dealing with a sick mother was one thing.

Dealing with betrayal and rejection was a whole different thing. ***

“I got in! I got in! I got in!” Bubbling laughter rose from her throat, filling the room in a misty haze of joy.

No one had to ask Ariella where she was going. Of course, she was going to Bais Rivka, her dream high school since she decided to become a star student in seventh grade. A few years of hard work had reaped the rewarded results. Ariella was going to her first choice of high school, and she was somehow convinced that this would be a ripple effect and catalyst for her upcoming perfect life. No matter.

Huva didn’t really care where Ariella was going. Names and faces swirled around her as she uncharacteristically remained seated in her seat.

Huva would be a perfect star in the high school play.

Huva would be the perfect addition to add spice to a lively discussion in a classroom full of ninth graders.

Huva would also be the winning combination of charismatic and kind to unite a classroom of girls together.

So why was she sitting in her seat while her classmates were animatedly discussing their high school plans? She wasn’t quite sure herself.

At least avoiding Tehilla wasn’t an issue. Tehilla had simply gone AWOL. Since that fateful discussion, Tehilla hadn’t shown up to school. What on earth is she doing all day, Huva fretted for the umpteenth time. How is this passing by eagle-eyed Mrs. Kreisman? And why is no one even

mentioning her name? Like, hey Huva, where is Tehilla? Is she not feeling well?

“But why can’t I come visit Ma?” A crystal tear sparkled on my eyelash. I discreetly swiped it.

“Believe me, I would love to take you,” his voice faltered.

Ta! I need you to be my knight in shining armor, my rock of faith, my handlebar of life. When everything fell apart, all I needed was the security of your unshakable unemotional perseverance.

But just like the swift sudden change of fate, your personality joined with the winds of change. You were thrust into a storm with no beginning or end. You are simply being blown off the charted path by the icy wind.

I sighed and pressed off. Ta was coming home late from Kollel today. I had persisted until he agreed to stay for night seder. I was filled with a strange sense of elation when he gave in.

In a world where I had no control over what happened from one minute to the next, I found comfort in one area of my life that I did have control over. The ringing phone interrupted my thoughts.

“Hi!” I greeted Rena cheerfully.

“Tehilla, where on earth are you?” Rena didn’t like polite chit chat.

“What do you mean? At home, of course. And where are you?”

A soft laugh presaged her sharp response. “I wasn’t home all day. You were. And you don’t sound sick.”

After a heartbeat, I said, “But my mother is.”

Silence.

I waited two minutes and heard even breathing.

Finally, “I’m sorry, Hila. I heard yesterday, but I was sure it wasn’t true. I mean, you hadn’t mentioned anything to me, and no one was really talking about it, so I figured it was a mistake.”

I didn’t say anything.

“Tehilla? I know I am just Rena, and I

know that there isn’t much that I can do or say. All I can say is that you are on my mind and in my tefillos. And…Tehilla, I admire your strength.”

Strength. What a word. I sighed. “Thanks, Reens. You always know what to say. They say a heart feels a heart. You are speaking straight from your heart, and I feel that. So, thank you. But most people just want to hear details to satisfy their curiosity. They don’t really care. That’s why I am keeping quiet for now.”

Before Rena hung up, she added, “By the way, quiet or no quiet, Huva is your closest friend, and she is frantically worrying about you. I believe that she deserves to know the truth.”

“I’m home!” Huva announced to the empty house. Her echo bounced mockingly in her ears. Saying hello to her mother was an old habit, and she wasn’t about to change it. And how was your day, Huvs? Was Mrs. Keisman understanding about the late report? Any interesting program going on? Her mother’s soft voice caressed her mind as she dropped her bag on the floor. In the closet, darling. Where it belongs. With a grunt, she pushed it into the mudroom and banged the door shut. Yup, like that! Now let’s hear all about your day!

Huva swiped a tear away from her eye. There was no use in living in the past.

“Hello.” Pori’s throaty voice filled the room.

“You’re home early.”

“I have news. Sit.” Pori pointed to the chair.

“Cut to the chase, Pori. I am tired and had a long day. What’s up?”

“I said sit.” Pori repeated calmly. Huva edged onto the chair.

“I quit my job.”

Huva’s watery brown eyes widened. Her heart began to race.

“You what?”

“You heard me the first time, Huva. There’s just no use. I am no longer an employee at Riverside Crossings.”

Huva clutched the chair in front of her, her

knuckles turning white.

“Pori, I don’t understand. Here you were just a short few days ago, telling me how you are the martyr, saving the family and providing us with shelter and food…”

“And now I don’t want to be a martyr. I want to be Pori.” Their eyes locked.

There are some moments in life that cannot be put into words, and this was one of them. It was the kind of feeling that only two sisters can relate to, and the kind of moment that holds an emotion that cannot be rewritten.

They both knew of pain and of martyrdom. They both knew what it meant to put on a mask for the world. But in her own courageous way, Pori had taken off the macho mask.

She just didn’t realize that in doing so, she was unmasking the raw, aching pain of her entire world. ***

“Sometimes, the bravest thing that you can do is ask for help.”

Miss Licht was in her element. Words and Language excited her to an almost laughable degree, but there was no denying that her passion overflowed to the girls.

“What comes to mind?” Her blue eyes were glowing.

“Asking someone to help you with homework.” That was Lea, elementary, as usual.

Rena raised her hand. “It takes courage to ask for help. But when you step out of your comfort zone and ask for help, you will often find the relief so overpowering, that you will realize that it is harder to stay stuck and struggling than to actually ask for help.”

“Beautiful, and eloquent.” Miss Licht beamed.

“But help is just mind over matter,” I argued. “For one person, helping someone can mean calling a friend in need, but the friend might not want that help. And when you ask for help, you are risking getting help that you didn’t even ask for, a different version of what you are really seeking. So maybe it isn’t the good kind of brave.”

Miss Licht gave me a long look before answering. “You raised a good point, Tehilla. Sometimes in life, we ask for things, but then when we get it, we say, ‘hey! That’s not really what I asked for, I meant something else!’ But then, it is too late. Because we were already thrusted into precisely the situation that we requested. But think of it this way- would you rather stay stuck in a ditch in the middle of the road and refuse to call out to passerby- because the passerby might be an assaulter? Would you rather stay stuck forever for the sake of not taking that risk?”

Her long answer exhausted me. Just visualizing the scene of myself in a ditch took mental energy.

Slowly, my mind began to paint a detailed scene. I saw a weak and pale face, suffering silently. I heard a heartbeat slow and tick with a weak rhythm, I smelled the scent of fear.

I almost jumped back when I realized whom my mind was describing. The pale face on the bed was me.

“Hava?” Chava smiled at the Filipino nurse, a lovely woman with a round face and huge heart.

Angelica was here and ready to serve her meal. Spoon-fed, like her baby abandoned at home.

“How are we doin’ today, honey?”

Chava winced as she did every time she heard herself addressed that way. Angelica really meant well.

“G...great, thannnk you.”

“And how are the kids? And what about the big one in high school?”

Chava nodded, she pressed her right hand on her side and heaved her body into a comfortable upright position. Just sitting up was a draining task. Long after Angelica left the room, the hollow words echoed in her mind, High School. High School…High School?!

High School! A quick glance at the calendar confirmed her suspicion: Acceptance letters had been sent out three weeks ago. And she hadn’t heard a word about high school from Tehilla.

Dov gets out of Yosef the reason for his worrisome behavior: the nice man who had given him the chess set has died.

CHAPTER FORTY EIGHT

Chapter Forty Eight

Dov and Hinda left the room. “He’s talking sensibly,” Dov said. “At least, in my opinion. It’s not an unusual response for someone who experienced a trauma from the death of someone he was close to. Or even relatively close to.”

Hinda nodded. “Right.” She leaned on the wall, and instinctively, Dov offered her the cup of water he was still holding. But once again, the cup remained in his hand, untaken. Hinda slowly walked over to the couch and sat down. She looked at the painting of the swans on the pond that Mali had drawn when she was thirteen, but didn’t really see anything.

“According to the dry criteria, there is not supposed to be a connection between schizophrenia and depression,” she said hollowly. “But I feel like, in this field, everything is connected, and everything is sensitive. He once began falling into a depression, and just about got out of it. And now again…?” She took a deep breath, and this time, she did take the cup of

water that Dov was offering.

“First of all, I think that right now you don’t need to panic about this,” her husband said. He kept glancing at the door to the room, which was ajar. “At this point, it’s not depression. It’s normal grief.”

“For someone he knew for two days?”

“We don't know what this person did for him. Sometimes the shortest encounter can be very deep.”

“Right,” she murmured.

“I think giving him two or three days to recover, without pressure from us, will help.”

“Right…” she said again.

And just then Michoel called, as if there was nothing more normal than the fact that he was calling day after day. “How are you, Hinda?” he asked warmly.

“Baruch Hashem, fine,” she answered as she stared at the two orbs of ice melting in her cup.

“You don’t sound so good. Is everything alright?”

“Hashem will help.”

“Of course He will.” Michoel’s voice was full of encouragement, but suddenly, he grew serious. “It sounds like you have a negative answer regarding the shidduch I spoke to you about.”

“Um…” she answered. The image of Brachi Freiberg rose in her mind, merging with Mali’s drawing of the lake, so that it peeped out between the long-necked swans.

He was quiet for a long moment. “Don’t take it too hard,” he said. “I should have thought that my

arrogance would cause problems. Was she offended when I turned down the offer before?”

“No,” she whispered. “I didn’t have a chance to suggest it to the other side. I had shared the idea only with you, to hear what you had to say about it.”

“And I said no.” He sounded resigned. “Fine, she’s also allowed to do that.”

“I didn’t speak to her at all, Michoel.” Hinda’s voice grew steadier, and she stood up and walked over to the window. “She got married already, that’s all.”

“Oh. Why didn't you say so? Yes, time has passed since then… Okay, enough about me. What’s doing by you these days?”

“I’m busy right now with Yosef. Very busy. I’m sorry.”

“What’s the story with Yosef?” His voice suddenly sounded fatherly, similar to the tone he had always used when speaking about his great-nephews. “Again something with his rebbeim? Oh, right, he finished eighth grade a while ago. So what is it?”

“He’s working now at the emergency room in Rambam, as part of the auxiliary staff there. He’s been there for a few months, and he’s very happy. And they're happy with him, too.” She sighed. “The problem is that he seems to have become friends with a patient who came there a few days ago, and the person just passed away, unfortunately. Yosef is taking it very hard.”

“So what happened, he got depressed again? Like that story when he was eighteen?”

“I hope not,” she said quietly. It looked like Michoel’s memory was not quite stable, certainly not with regard to the passing of time and everyone’s ages. “I hope he recovers quickly. But I won’t breathe easy until that happens.”

“I understand you," he said. "I think…” Suddenly he fell silent. After a minute, he spoke up again. “I have something interesting to suggest to you.” Then he fell silent once more.

Hinda was not in the mood right now to listen to "interesting things," but ultimately, this was a phone call from Michoel.

“Yes?” she asked, sounding curious. “Let’s hear.”

“No, no, I need to think about it more before I tell you anything. It’s not so simple. But it can certainly be a very interesting idea.” ***

Suddenly one day, without any advance notice, a fax came through from Mike.

He didn’t write much, but even the few words that were on the page were hard to decipher; as unclear as his handwriting usually was, it was much worse now. “Don’t send private investigators after me; the guy has already asked around too much about me. You should stop the investigations. I’m even ready to tell you the truth: I got sick with anorexia, and they are helping me get rid of it here. So if you want me to be healthy, leave me alone.”

The last words had an undertone of a threat. Mommy said that right away when she came home and saw the fax. And without knowing it, she confirmed what Becky had been thinking: Something about this letter was strange, but it didn’t seem to be the writing of someone under duress, even though a faxed page wasn’t ideal for making graphology analyses. Did Mike really mean what he was writing? That if they would get him out from wherever he was, or they would keep bothering him there, he wouldn’t be able to be cured of his anorexia?

The next day, the school guidance counselor could not understand what had happened to Becky. When she took out Becky from class, the girl wouldn’t talk about any subject besides graphology. They read a thin booklet together that summarized the levels of accuracy of this kind of analysis, and discussed what it said. Becky reached the conclusion that the margin of error of someone who was not experienced enough in the subject could be between thirty and eighty five percent. She repeated the numbers over and over, looking very worried. Toward the end of the session, when the counselor got up to prepare a hot tea for the precocious six-year-old, Becky remained seated silently at the desk. She did not share her thoughts out loud as she usually did.

“What are you thinking about, Becky?” the counselor asked as she carried the tea to the table.

“If I tell you, it would probably be a lie. So it’s better for me to just keep quiet.”

“Really?”

“Yes, really.”

“And if you tell me just about what subject it is, will that also not be the truth?”

“I’m thinking about…anorexia.”

“What kind of thoughts do you have about anorexia?” the counselor queried. Becky’s cheeks were full and pink as always.

“Can someone get it because he wants to, or is it a disease that happens to people just like that, like the flu?”

“Interesting question. There are probably things that are dependent on willpower, but that’s a subject I definitely have to look into before I answer you with inaccurate information.”

“I mean that, let’s say someone doesn’t eat, not because he wants to be skinny, and not because he’s afraid to get fat. Just because he wants people to say that he’s anorexic. Then is he really anorexic?”

“I can check this for you with a psychologist friend of mine who works in that field.”

Becky sighed. "Thanks."

“And that’s it? After that you’ll be good?”

“No, of course not. I have lots of other things that are bothering me, too.”

“And of all of them, which can you tell me about without lying?”

“Graphology, of course.”

“What happened?” The counselor chuckled. “Which dreadful trait did you detect in my handwriting that you’re so afraid to tell me?”

“It has nothing to do with you,” Becky murmured miserably.

“Who is it related to, then?”

“Me.”

“Usually, the things we discuss in this room are related to you,” the guidance counselor said calmly as she settled back into her chair.

“Because somehow, everything in the world has to be related to me.”

“That’s also true,” the older woman said with a laugh. “But that’s a bit of an egotistical way of thinking, isn’t it?”

“That’s not true!” Becky objected. “My father’s rabbi taught him that every person needs to think that ‘the world was created for me,’ and my father taught that to me. There’s something very encouraging about that.”

“Really. What helps you feel encouraged about it?”

“To think that there are all kinds of things that happen in the world, and they are all intended for me. So that I should notice them, and know what to do about them…” She fell silent and blushed, as if she’d said

something dreadful.

“Do you want to tell me about the last time something happened, and you took it as a sign that you were supposed to do something about it?”

“Sure,” Becky shot back. “The French teacher left me three pages in the workbook to do this morning.”

The counselor laughed again. “Nice. Okay, how about another example? The one you were thinking about when you shared this idea a minute ago.”

“I can’t tell that to you,” the girl said, her voice flagging. “Why not?”

“Because our hour is over.” She stood up. And at the door, she added, “Anyway, what I was thinking about… it wasn’t really a lie. It just wasn’t the whole truth.” For the rest of the day, Becky was uncharacteristically quiet. Her appetite had also disappeared. While her parents were speaking heatedly on the phone with Rabbi Birenzweig and the private detective, they hardly noticed her, or the miniscule amount of food she was eating. There was no question anymore about where Mike was; he hadn’t even bothered sending the fax from a private number. He was in South Carolina, with those people who thought that mirrors and photos were terrible things.

But what connection was there between anorexia and mirrors? Or photos?

Of course, someone who doesn’t look at himself in a mirror will not think that he’s fat or that he weighs more than he is supposed to. But that was a very superficial connection, Becky knew, and Mike was too smart to buy such a foolish idea. He may not have been as gifted as she was, but his IQ had always been high. That night, when everyone was sleeping, Becky tiptoed barefoot to the office on the ground floor. She took out a blank piece of paper, and, intermittently glancing at the door, she sat down at the big office desk.

“Mike, I think I also have anorexia,” she wrote, in a much nicer handwriting than he had written. “And I’m too young to get messed up like this. Is there a way for me to be treated, too?”

And without any hesitation—she’d been altogether too hesitant all day—she stuck the paper into the fax machine and punched in the number that was at the top of the page on Mike’s fax.

Add a pop of color to your Purim Seudah with foods that taste as good as they look!

A Freilichen Purim, GITTY NEUMAN

8 oz red cabbage

1 red pepper, diced

1 orange pepper, diced

1 yellow pepper, diced

8 oz sugar snap peas, ends removed, cut bite

size

2 Tbsp roasted, salted sunflower seeds

Dressing:

4 Tbsp sugar

4 Tbsp mayonnaise

4 Tbsp oil

2 Tbsp honey

2 Tbsp vinegar

2 Tbsp diced onions

1 Tbsp deli mustard

1 tsp salt

1. Layer salad ingredients in mini cups.

2. Top with some sunflower seeds and ½ Tbsp of dressing. Dressing can be put on the salad up to 24 hours before serving.

3. Prepare the dressing: Combine all ingredients in a small bowl. Using an immersion blender, blend until smooth and creamy.

Yields: approx. 12-15 mini servings

Note: If you will be serving this salad in a bowl, rather than layering it, the amount of cabbage and sunflower seeds should be doubled.

SUSHIFLAVORED SALMON BITES

2 slices salmon fillet salt, onion powder, garlic powder, paprika, for sprinkling

1 Tbsp sweet sauce

2-3 Sweet potatoes (look for nice round ones)

2 Tbsp oil

2 cucumbers, sliced in ½” rounds

Crispy onions, for garnish Sweet sauce and spicy mayo, for drizzling

1. Preheat oven to 400°.

2. Place salmon slices in a small pan. Sprinkle lightly with spices and spray cooking oil over the top. Bake 20 minutes.

3. Use a fork to flake the salmon into small pieces and gently mix with the sweet sauce (you don’t want it to turn to mush).

4. Slice the sweet potatoes into ½” rounds. Place on a lined baking sheet. Drizzle with oil and sprinkle lightly with salt. Bake approximately 45 minutes, or until the edges turn crisp and the center is soft.

5. Arrange the sweet potato and/ or cucumber slices on a serving tray. Top with a small amount of flaked salmon. Sprinkle with crispy onions and drizzle spicy mayo and sweet sauce.

Yields: approximately 20 bites

Note: Both the salmon and sweet potatoes can be prepared and refrigerated up to 2 days in advance.

Bring to room temperature before serving. Tip: This is a great way to repurpose leftover baked salmon.

APurim is an intense day filled with hustle and bustle, lots of food, and lots of comings and goings. Below are some tips to keep in mind so that both, adult, and child, can balance their eating and enjoy some goodies on this day:

• Start your day off right!

It is important to eat a balanced breakfast on Purim morning so that we get the nutrition we need as soon as the day begins. You will also not feel the need to nosh constantly if you feel full. Same for the little ones! There will be plenty of candy and sweets around all day. Give them this great head start!

• Hydrate! Water! Water! Water! It is vital to

remember to drink on this busy day. Keep some water bottles in the car and drink water at the meals as well.

• Make mindful choices! There will be so many goodies at the meals and in between meals. Even if you are on a weight loss plan, it is ok to veer off track for a day or two but do so mindfully. Fill up on the healthier options first and then allow yourself some goodies if you feel the need for that. The point is to treat yourself with respect, even on a nontypical day!

• After Purim, you will have loads of sweets in your house. Personally, I think that this may be a good opportunity to teach your little ones about

making wise food choices. It is important to make your children understand that food is not “good or bad”. We want our kids to understand that some foods are better for us than others. My recommendation is, to allow your child to choose what nosh items he wants to hold on to, and then save that for when he is deserving of a treat. Get rid of the things that he did not mind giving up on! Try to get your child to understand why these candy items are not smart choices for his health so that in the future, he should want to eat foods that are more nutrient-dense.

THE POWER OF KIRUV SIX YEARS LATER

Rashi explains the allegory. Often we perform acts of kindness and altruism but don't see any immediate results, satisfaction or gratification. It seems as if we have cast our bread upon the waters, never to see the bread again, when in actuality, every good deed we do is in some way, at some future time rewarded and reciprocated. Every action creates and engenders a reaction. The effect may not be immediate. It can take time. But after many days we will see our efforts bear fruit. The seeds we plant will germinate and sprout. The tears we shed of heartfelt prayer and anguish will become tears of joy. "Those that sow in tears, shall reap in joy (Tehillim 126)."

The energy we expend, the resources we exhaust, the love we instill will never dissipate or be lost. The act of giving to others reverberates in time and has long term consequences one never dreamt of.

Kiruv can take an emotional toll. It requires tremendous self sacrifice, selflessness and intense devotion, encompassing mind, heart and soul. One often wonders whether they made an impact. One may ponder whatever occurred to the person he or she was so dedicated to.

We had a meeting with a large contingent of faculty members that are teachers in a Kiruv school. These are teachers who exemplify and personify kindness and caring.

At the beginning of the meeting, one of teacher, a young rabbi, asked to make an important statement. No one knew what he wanted to say.

He addressed us:

"Rabbis, do you recognize me?" Often we help and inspire others and cannot envision the lasting effect.

"I just wish to publicly thank the Rabbis and BJX. I am here today, Shomer Shabbos for the past six years, thanks to you. Now I am giving back to others. You should know what a difference you made in my life and the difference you are helping me make."

How profound are the words from Koheles. Six years ago we cast our bread upon the waters and now we see that all the toil and labor has such incredible results.

Fifteen years ago on Purim night a mini-revolution happened. A group of very special םיתב ילעב sponsored bochurim and kollel yungerlite from Yeshiva Torah Temimah to sit and learn two hours םיפוצר on Purim night. The bochurim earned money for their own הקדצ, instead of walking the streets collecting. The bais hamedrash boomed with הרות לוק and this truly was the ultimate in ולביקו ומיק of the הרותה תחמש.

Sight on the Goal

They say children are our best teachers, and I must admit it’s true. The lesson my six-year-old taught me, was so strong – no shiur or article on the topic could ever have moved me as profoundly.

I have a computer at home for work. Of course, it is filtered to the highest standard. I know my boundaries – or I thought I knew my boundaries.

The work is intense and I spend many hours in front of the screen. If I want to be brutally honest with myself, I will admit that not all those hours are directly related to work. Once I’m already sitting in the chair, I find myself dabbling in the other glitz and glamour that the computer has to offer. It’s so easy to get carried away!

My kids are young and my official hours are in the evening, after I’ve tucked them into bed. But sometimes, I’ll run over for just a few moments to check my emails or respond to a customer. And before I know it, those moments could turn into longer than just a few moments…

That afternoon was one of those moments. I sat before the computer, typing quickly. Sixyear-old Naftali came over. He was in the middle of playing a

new game and he brought the instruction booklet to show me. “Ma, what does it say here? How does the game go?”

I quickly rattled off the instructions, my eyes still glued to the screen. He asked me to repeat, and I did. Still, I made no eye contact. I was busy in my inbox.

“But, Ma! Look!” Naftali cried out, exasperated.

I turned around and looked from my son’s little face to the book and back. He looked very sad. “Mommy, your eyes only see the computer!”

I looked at him – hard. Do I really only see the computer? How could I be choosing not to look at my son’s lichtige face as he was innocently, implicitly begging me to?!

Something inside me softened. I want to keep my eyes on the goal, not on the computer, my heart suddenly screamed.

I flipped my laptop closed and hugged Naftali tight. “Come, Mommy’s gonna play with you.”

I resolved to do whatever I could to help myself redraw the boundaries. I recently heard of a computer filter that offers timeouts and I am looking into working that option out for myself. I don’t want to be looking at the screen when my precious children are around. I want to see their smiles, their lichtige neshamos. I want to see a future that will make Hashem proud!
