Hinda receives Martin’s note and tries calling him, but doesn’t get through.
A recently-remarried young woman—Chaya Cohen— calls Hinda for advice.
Kornblit gives Martin two days to think about his offer. Michoel wonders what kind of hospital or mental institution he is in and why he is there. He doesn’t take the medication he is given, which makes his head a lot clearer.
Hinda didn’t know if “Chaya Cohen” was a real name or not. The young woman talked and talked, hardly giving Hinda a chance to respond. Hinda scrubbed the soup pot, every so often inserting an “Uh-huh” or “Really…” But suddenly, Chaya’s rush of words stopped. Then, after a long moment of quiet, Chaya added, “A support group doesn’t work for me, because I’m not the type who can sit and talk about these things in front of a few women. But I do feel that I need to do something with myself, because I don’t want to reach the point where I’ll need to say, ‘It’s either me or them.’”
“You won’t need to, b’ezras Hashem,” Hinda replied. She was unable to understand why Rebbetzin Werner had given her phone number to this woman. Their lives were so different, no matter which angle you looked at it from. Which part of her life experience could help Chaya? Her challenges, it seemed, were of another nature entirely.
“Do you think so?” Chaya’s voice was laced with a sense of despair.
“I think that such a remark comes from a very pained and
hurt place,” Hinda said, and despite various challenges and issues on all fronts, Simi’s image was the one that suddenly popped into her mind. “I think it comes from a sad, harsh place, and if you wouldn’t be in such a place, you wouldn’t be saying this kind of thing.” “But I am there,” Chaya said tremblingly. “I feel like I’m on the brink. How can I not be there if…” She paused for a moment. “I know it sounds so petty, but the other day, after supper, I took out some chocolate, something that my husband bought for me because he knows I like this type, and just then his fifteen-year-old daughter came in and said, ‘Hey! Can I take that for my friends? We’re studying for a test.’ And without saying a word, he took the chocolate from the table and gave it to her!” She was suddenly crying. Apparently, the chocolate was very bittersweet indeed. “You know, as long as the problems are only with them—it’s hard, but tolerable. But if he is also moving over to their side…”
There are no sides in these kinds of stories; that’s one of the most important rules, Hinda thought to herself. But she didn’t say a word. Some things might be logically correct, she knew, but emotions do not always allow the logic to be processed. Like right now, when she could hear the sounds of laughter and chitchat from Simi’s room. Dov was probably making a whole production there with the cake and the juice that he’d taken in there. They’d been talking and laughing for half an hour already, ever since Hinda had gone downstairs to take out the garbage.
Logically it made sense that Dov should be giving his daughter a good time. Was he not allowed to? He was. When Baruch came for Shabbos, Dov was extremely gracious to him. He also tried very hard with Yosef, as much as Yosef allowed him to. He went out of his
way to make Hinda’s children feel comfortable, so why shouldn’t he play host to his own daughter, the way he knew how—and enjoy himself at it too?
Common sense is the most logical thing in the world. And yet, Hinda found herself going out of the kitchen quietly, with her soapy hands, and approaching Simi’s room, feeling, for some reason…left out.
“The truth is, Chaya,” she said, stopping about ten feet away from the door to the room, which was almost all the way closed, “I have no idea why Rebbetzin Werner sent you to me. I wanted to tell you this from the beginning of our conversation. You probably have more experience than I do—I only got remarried a few months ago—and besides, our family situation is very dissimilar.”
“Yes, she did tell me that,” Chaya said in a low voice. “But she claimed that she’s sending me to you, first of all, because you are a wise person, irrespective of your situation. And she also said that a week of your experiences is like half a year of someone else’s.”
Hinda chuckled. “Nu, nu… In any case, now, as we are speaking, I’m noticing that despite the different external factors, there are certainly a few challenges that we do share…” And she began walking back to the kitchen. ***
The Ohr Chaim Hall was almost empty. There were long tables set up with clothes, and a pile of boxes was haphazardly stacked at the end. Someone in a blue shirt was walking around, overseeing two Sudanese workers who were arranging the clothes. He glanced at Martin who slowly entered, and then went back to what he was doing. He looked uptight. He kept trying to call someone, but was apparently not getting an answer. “This is the sale for the Ohr Naftali and Leah organization, right?” Martin asked hesitantly, shifted the yarmulke he had borrowed from Michoel’s collection, on his head. As the main operative of the organization, he couldn’t appear here bareheaded.
The man turned to him. “Yes. But it only begins at eight in the evening. That’s more than three hours from now.”
“Oh,” Martin murmured. “Where does it say what the hours are?”
“I don’t understand that either,” the man said, looking again at his phone. “And Perl is not answering me. I didn’t see a single sign. Usually, the organization puts up signs and ads about a week before the sale. How do you know about it? Were there any advertisements or signs or something? Or a telephone message?”
Ads!
No one would come because no one knew about the sale!
“I…I don’t know,” he said, looking around. “Someone told me—I don’t remember who.”
“Besides,” the man said, “I think the sale is only for women and children. Perl is pretty strict about it.”
“Okay,” Martin replied. He just wanted to escape from there, as fast as he could. But after a moment, he recovered. “Who do people know here? Who are you?”
The man shrugged. “I’m just the importer, that’s all. My workers are here to help find the right sizes and styles, but Perl always brings his own salesgirls and cashiers. I don’t know who they are.”
Martin nodded, and did what he wanted to do five minutes before: he escaped.
At least one good thing had emerged from Kornblit’s visit: Now he could leave the house freely, without worrying. They could be following him; he wasn’t able to tell, and he didn’t really care. He would check it out before he left the house for good, and he’d get rid of his telephone. He had a bit less than twenty-four hours for that. But that meant twenty-four hours to be Michoel Perl for a little longer.
Tonight he’d also finish up the vouchers for the chickens; those vouchers had landed in Perl’s mailbox three days ago. In the drawer, he’d found official envelopes of the organization, and a list of those who were entitled to the vouchers this year. He’d spent half the night copying the names and addresses by hand. Then he’d put the number of vouchers that appeared on the list into each envelope, and he’d gone out to the post office in the morning to buy stamps and send out the envelopes. Maybe he’d still go back to Canada one day, and he’d tell Brian that there are people in the world who worry about the poor.
But what would be now? He hadn’t thought about the fact that they needed to inform people about this sale! How could he publicize it, and to whom? Where would he get cashiers within the next three hours?!
Martin took a deep breath. He’d call Hinda.
***
It would be interesting to know how much time he had been lying here before he woke up. It was better not to
ask them; the problem was that he had no idea if enough time had passed that people back in Israel would start to worry about him. It had happened in the past that he had traveled for fundraising trips that were supposed to be just a few days long, and then he’d extended his stay to a month or more, even two months. And it was precisely for that reason, and because of that breakin two years ago, that he’d set up that whole system at home with Shimon Weisskopf.
This time, he was scheduled to be traveling for at least three weeks; there was a wedding, and he wanted to continue on to America to visit some donors. Had he attended the wedding? Where had it been?
Where was he now? They spoke English here, but he wasn’t sure he recognized the accent. It wasn’t a real New York accent. Canada, perhaps, or Britain, or a more Western part of the United States?
He could ask to make a phone call. They should not find any reason for him not to make an innocent call, even though that guy who spent the most time hovering over him, the guy who he had called “Daddy” at the beginning, had not looked pleased at that previous conversation he’d had, with Hinda.
Wait! Hadn’t he had his own cell phone?
If he would be home now, he’d take a pen and paper and make a list of all the things that were clear to him and all those that were not. But he didn’t want to make any lists here; he didn’t want them to be able to read, black on white, what he knew and what was still fuzzy in his mind.
His name was Michoel Perl, and he was probably about thirty-five or forty years old. His hands looked older, but maybe they’d been injured, because he felt very young. He had no way to see himself because he hadn’t seen even one mirror on the whole floor.
He had been a yeshivah bachur in Lakewood until a few years ago, and then he’d come to Eretz Yisrael. Unfortunately, he was still single, and his efforts at shidduchim in America had not given him much of an interest in continuing with it in Israel.
What else? Besides Hinda, he had no family in Eretz Yisrael, it seemed. Was that for sure? Yes, he thought he had no one else. Hinda herself had been widowed a few years ago, poor girl; he tried to support her and get her back on her feet. It wasn’t easy to raise five children alone.
And to marry off Avigdor… How old was Avigdor already? Maybe it had been his wedding that he had traveled to? No, that couldn’t be. Hinda wouldn’t take a girl from abroad for him.
Michoel got up from the bed and went over to the sink in his room. The two apples he’d eaten last night had helped calm his rumbling stomach, but it wasn’t enough. He needed to find something else that he could eat here before morning…Hey, tefillin! Where were his tefillin?
The time had come to do something about his missing possessions. Irrespective of the reason he was hospitalized here, he should have his personal possessions.
He walked slowly out of the room. A tall nurse with glasses stopped and smiled at him. “Good morning, sir,” she said in a friendly tone. “How did you sleep last night?”
“Wonderfully,” Michoel replied. “Can you tell me where my personal belongings are?”
“What do you mean?”
“I came here from somewhere, right? I’m sure that I didn’t come empty-handed.”
“Oh!” the nurse said. “You’ll have to ask the director of the department about that, okay?”
“Which department is this?” Michoel inquired. "Head injuries,” the nurse said pleasantly.
“I have a head injury?”
“Do you not?”
Michoel stared at the nurse, and sensed that he’d better withdraw before he crossed a boundary. “You might be right, now that I’m thinking about it,” he murmured.
TO BE CONTINUED
Recap: Mrs. Shainberger asks Esther Mindy how she’s finding the job. Esther Mindy says she’s enjoying the job, and then Mrs. Shainberger tells her she has something to discuss.
The police visit Mr. Grossman to tell him that they think they have their suspect, but are unsure if they have enough testimony to get a conviction, unless Mrs. Grossman testifies.
Adams, the Investor’s adviser, tells him that Glacier has yet to leave the country, and is still suffering from the injuries he received fighting the security agent at the Grossmans’ house. The Investor tells Adams to send Glacier out of the country, for their own safety.
“Esther Mindy hummed to herself as the oven timer beeped. She pulled on her oven mitts, made to look like two gaping mouths, and extracted the pan of mushroom lasagna from the oven.
She inhaled the aroma and smiled. Avrumi liked lasagna. Supper tonight would be cozy and warm, despite the colder weather that was beginning to make itself felt outside.
Satisfaction tinged Esther Mindy’s smile-she’d enjoyed herself at work today. Checking the clock on the oven, she saw that she had a bit of time still until Avrumi would be coming home. The table was set with two place settings and strawberry smoothie cups. All was ready.
Esther Mindy curled up on her favorite white couch and pulled out her journal. Time to record her impressions of the day.
I was totally flabbergasted when Mrs. Shainberger asked me to take Shana under my wing. Like, I’m just the secretary there! And how would she know anyway that I schmooze with Shana all the time when she gets sent out of class? It’s not like she ever saw us together.
But Mrs. Shainberger explained that she comes from a really troubled home and that she gives her teachers a crazy hard time. That’s why she keeps getting sent out of class. It’s funny, because even though she’s so chutzpadik in class, she’s really pretty shy around me. We only schmooze about light topics.
Anyway, so I was really honored at the thought that Mrs. Shainberger wanted me to help Shana. I decided that there were some little jobs that I would save for her, and ask Shana if she wanted to be the one to help me with them, since I know her already and think she would be the perfect assistant.
It was so cute to see how excited she was! Of course, she didn’t dare show it. She played it cool. But her eyes lit up when she heard that I’d thought of her when I realized I wanted help.
And now she gets to be the glitzy girl getting called out of class to help the secretary instead of the troublemaker who’s being punished yet again. I have to say it feels really good to help a girl out like that.
The door opened and a whirlwind blew in. Esther Mindy jumped up to greet her husband.
“Avrumi?” she called as she made her way to the door.
Avrumi rushed into the kitchen, meeting Esther Mindy at the door. He plopped into his chair and took a deep breath.
“Whoa, Avrumi, what happened? You look like you’re-“ Esther Mindy searched for the right simile, “like ISIS just attacked or something!”
“Nope, no ISIS,” Avrumi said. “But
Esther Mindy didn’t get a chance to guess, as he immediately went on. “The police caught the burglar!”
“No way!” Esther Mindy gasped. “When?”
“Today! He’s in jail now as we speak!”
“But I thought they didn’t have enough evidence to convict him,” Esther Mindy exclaimed. “How come they arrested him? Did your mother change her mind about testifying?”
“No,” Avrumi said. “It’s a crazy story. They caught him in the airport, trying to leave the country.
“Tell me the whole story,” Esther Mindy ordered.
***
Glacier had been badly affected by the blow he’d received to his skull from the security agent outside the Grossmans’ house. He hadn’t gotten any treatment for his injuries, which left him dazed with pain that Advil couldn’t take away.
When Adams, the Investor’s underling, had come to visit him with explicit instructions to leave the country, Glacier had followed along meekly. All the arrangements he usually took care of himself for these lying-low trips were arranged by Adams instead.
So Glacier had taken the passport that Adams gave him and arrived at the airport at the time written on the flight confirmation that Adams had sent him. The trouble started at check-in, when he got confused and first pulled out the wrong passport from his pocket, with his real name on it. When he finally took out the one Adams had given him which matched the name on the flight confirmation, it was highly suspicious to the official, of course.
Glacier was taken to the side for questioning. When his answers
couldn’t stand up to the crossexamination, the police officers took the poor confused fellow into the local station.
Once there, it didn’t take long to connect Glacier to the open investigation in the Brooklyn station on the Grossman case.
***
“And that’s how we heard about it,” Avrumi finished telling an avidlylistening Esther Mindy. “Wow,” she breathed. “What does this mean?”
“Well, my father said that now the police is confident that they can convict him because he tried to fly with a false passport for sure. They’re also going to try to convict him for being the one to break into my parents’ house, but if it doesn’t work, it doesn’t really matter.”
“So your mother doesn’t have to testify, right?” Esther Mindy asked.
“They’re still going to want her to,” Avrumi conceded, “but she doesn’t have to. And she really doesn’t want to, you know.”
“I know.” Esther Mindy nodded. By now, she knew what it would mean for her mother-in-law to have to testify in court. Mrs. Grossman would feel like she was being ripped apart to have to do something so against her strive for perfectionadmit in public that she’d been made into a victim.
“Yeah.” Avrumi played with the straw in his strawberry smoothie. “Sometimes I wonder why she’s so against it.”
“Isn’t it obvious?” Esther Mindy was surprised. “I was just thinking that your mother could never testify in public like that to being a victim.”
“Yes, but why? Why can’t she handle things like that?”
Esther Mindy sucked in her breath. It was the first time Avrumi was
acknowledging that his mother’s behavior wasn’t perfectly rational.
“I don’t know, but I wonder, too,” Esther Mindy said. They sat in silence for a few moments, then Avrumi started sipping his smoothie.
“Mmm,” he said. “Rich.”
“Here, I’ll bring the lasagna and salad,” Esther Mindy jumped up to get the rest of the food.
“Isn’t it crazy that my parents are mixed up in this?”
“Not normal,” Esther Mindy agreed. A new thought struck her. “Do you think that poor doctor is going to be able to continue his treatment plans, now that the guy is going to jail?”
Avrumi held back a snort. “This guy wasn’t working on his own,” he explained patiently. “My father still can’t give him funding, because the companies who put him up to doing it are still ready to do anything it takes to stop the doctor. And besides, he probably declared bankruptcy already.”
“So sad,” Esther Mindy said, shaking her head.
“Yeah,” Avrumi shrugged. ***
Mrs. Grossman wrapped her scarf more tightly around herself and clutched her mug of espresso with both hands, bracing herself on the recliner.
Mr. Grossman, sitting on the loveseat angled to face her, sipped his coffee with an absentminded look in his eye.
“At least that horrible guy is going to jail,” Mrs. Grossman shuddered for the fifteenth time that day, breaking the silence. “Trying to leave the country on a false passport!” she shook her head.
Mr. Grossman looked at her, uncommon softness in his eyes. The burglar’s arrest seemed to have shaken her up even more.

“Why are you getting so terribly worked up about it?” he asked, gently as he could. The question felt awkward on his tongue. When was the last time they’d discussed feelings?
Mrs. Grossman flinched. Suddenly, memories came rushing into her mind. Memories she’d suppressed for years. So many years…
Prison, police and crime meant something else to each person. To Mrs. Grossman, it brought her back to the most painful part of her childhood.
Her father had been a successful businessman. She’d grown up as the cosseted youngest of a large family, never lacking for a thing until she was ten years old.
The year she was ten, in fifth grade, her father was arrested.
He hadn’t known anything was shady about the latest business deal he’d been involved in, but when the police showed up at his office, there was nothing he could say to convince them of that. After a yearlong trial, he was finally slapped with a million-dollar fine-plus two years in jail.
Because Mrs. Grossman’s extended family were all wealthy, the fine had been paid easily, and her family had still had enough money to live comfortably for the duration of her father’s stay in prison.
But the help they’d received from their family members had come at a price. The price of feeling beholden, of never being on an equal footing once more with their extended family members.
Mrs. Grossman, as one of the only children still living at home, had endured the brunt of the shame and humiliation involved in losing
their standing and good name. Her older siblings, who’d never taken her seriously because she was the youngest, brushed aside her complaints with impatience, telling her that she had to face up the challenge just like them. Ever since, she’d needed to prove to them that she was just as capable as her older siblings of living up to what was expected.
Most difficult of all had been the rejection she’d experienced at the hands of her peers. Mrs. Grossman scrunched her eyes closed to try to stop the memories, but they insisted on coming.
“Hey, did you hear what happened with her father?”
“Don’t talk to her, her father’s a criminal!”
Pre-adolescents could be horrifically cruel. And the pain of that social exclusion was never really mitigated, despite her switching schools for high school and becoming popular and accepted once more. Even the feeling of being needy and looked down upon by her family members still rankled when her father was released from prison and rapidly made an even larger fortune, this time on the right side of the law.
Her lips twitched as she sat on the couch facing her husband, so many years later, but just a blink back to the associations that made her cringe.
“It just-“ she swallowed. Could she actually admit it, at least to her husband, how vulnerable the current situation made her feel? And where the vulnerability came from?
“It reminds me of when my father had his story,” she finally stuttered. “You know.” She didn’t know how to
express more. She didn’t understand more. Only that the two were somehow connected.
A light of understanding shone in Mr. Grossman’s eyes. “You mean, the police part?”
Mrs. Grossman nodded.
“You didn’t really have to go to the station.” Mr. Grossman said.
“Nah, it’s not like I can’t handle the police,” Mrs. Grossman said. Then she shuddered, for the sixteenth time that day. “But there’s no way I can testify in a courtroom.”
She caught the top of her mug with her teeth and sucked some liquid through the gap. So impolite, what was she doing? She immediately released it and took a ladylike sip, folding one leg over the other neatly.
“It was all so long ago, I don’t know why I remembered it all now,” she apologized. “Not important.”
Mr. Grossman wasn’t very emotionally savvy either. He nodded. “No, what’s important to focus on is that the criminal was caught. Now you’ll be able to sleep better tonight.”
Mrs. Grossman nodded her agreement, though she still felt like shuddering.
“You think people are talking about it? Like, that the guy who broke into the Grossman house was caught?”
She tried to sound nonchalant as she voiced the question, like it had just struck her.
Mr. Grossman shrugged. He didn’t really care either way.
But Mrs. Grossman did. And she couldn’t sleep that night either, even though she knew that her would-be attacker was safely incarcerated.

Due to the persistent advocacy of Assemblyman Simcha Eichenstein, NYC Parks Department granted permission to trim trees bordering Washington and Greenwood Cemeteries, allowing motorist who are Kohanim to drive along these streets.
For many years, overhanging branches along these streets prevented Kohanim from driving there, forcing them to use alternate routes due to the issue of tumah.
Under the guidance of Rabbi Yitzchok Stein, Supervisor of V'aad Mishmeres Kahuna and Rosh Bais Din of Foltichen, trees were recently trimmed and Kohanim will now be able to travel on theses street lanes.
The following lanes are now available for cars to drive:
Washington Cemetery Bay Parkway between East 3' Street and McDonald Avenue: Outside lane (cemetery side) only Bay Parkway between McDonald Avenue and 57th Street: Outside lanes in both directions 20th Avenue between 54th and 57th Streets: Both directions Ocean Parkway between Avenue J and AvenueLSouthbound service lane
Greenwood Cemetery McDonald Avenue between 20th Avenue and Fort Hamilton Parkway: Both driving lanes (not parking lane) along the cemetery Fort Hamilton Parkway between McDonald Avenue and 37th Street: Both lanes
Makdim is here to help you stay updated when it’s time for your next health screening.
As the founder of Yachad Bobov, a medical supply gemach, and a long-standing Hatzolah member – Chaim Fleischer has witnessed harrowing medical experiences. With the knowledge that many instances of suffering could be avoided with early medical intervention, Fleischer founded Makdim, a health awareness organization. The mission of Makdim is to save lives, one health screening at a time.
Makdim has recently expanded and partnered with the Boro Park Jewish Community Council to help facilitate health screenings for a wider range of community members. Life-saving screenings such as colonoscopies, mammograms, and blood-pressure screenings are available, yet unfortunately underutilized. Makdim’s support team updates individuals who opt in for screening reminders and helps with referrals and appointment scheduling. All that’s necessary is for a patient to show up.
“We understand there are many individuals suffering from preventable diseases such as colon cancer, not because they chose to avoid health screenings – but simply because they were unaware of the need to screen,” says Fleischer. Makdim’s first initiative is raising awareness of the importance of colonoscopies, with over a hundred colonoscopies arranged and multiple lives saved over the past few years.
Before 45 yr old Moshe W. underwent a colonoscopy, he was hesitant. Fleischer assured him the screening would take under two hours, and reminded Moshe of the potentially life-saving outcomes. All Moshe needed to do was show up for the test, and Fleischer would take care of the logistics. Moshe’s colonoscopy yielded concerning results, but thanks to early diagnosis and treatment, Moshe reduced the risk of developing colon cancer. With a painless colonoscopy, multiple pre-cancerous polyps were removed and Moshe is now in the clear.
With greater colonoscopy awareness in the Boro Park community, doctors are optimistic. “I do not doubt that the colonoscopy screening campaign by Makdim will save lives and prevent some people from needing therapies such as surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy,” says Dr. Goldstein. “Colon cancer should be unheard of or rare in our community,” asserts Dr. Tokayer. By choosing to stay up to date with colonoscopy screenings, this vision can become a reality.
Makdim was founded to save lives, one health screening at a time. Sign up via phone 718-925-2943 or online at Makdim.org to stay updated when it’s time for you to screen. Makdim will additionally provide referrals and help with scheduling upon request.

“It’s not what you do for your children, but what you have taught them to do for themselves that will make them successful human beings” – Ann Landers It’s the popular belief that your early experiences as a child determine who you will be as an adult. If your parents spoke to you in a certain way, then you will inevitably speak to your children that way. If your mother gave you guilt about that second cookie you ate, then you will give your daughter guilt about her second cookie. The tenth anniversary edition of Parenting from the Inside Out comes to tell us once again that our childhood is not our destiny. You don’t have to be defined by your childhood experiences. Shaped by them? Sure. But, you don’t have to
repeat those experiences, you can use them to learn and grow as a parent.
There are six essential points to the method that the authors Drs. Daniel Siegel and Mary Hartzell call “parenting from the inside out.” Those points are the foundation for parenting that allows you to take the memories and experiences of your childhood and transform them into a positive parenting system.
• Being mindful. The idea of mindfulness is to be present in your thoughts and actions. What that means is that when you are interacting with your child (not every minute of every day!) you are not worrying about the past or the future. This living in the present moment helps your children not only learn about you
and the way you function in the world, but also about themselves. When we emotionally connect to our children, they develop a deeper sense of themselves and their ability to interact with the world around them.
• Lifelong learning. Sometimes, it’s hard not to view parenting as a chore. But, if you approach parenting as a burden, you will ultimately stumble because it is impossible to happily carry a burden for twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, for a lifetime. If, instead, you approach those challenges as learning opportunities, you can continue to grow and develop. Ultimately those challenges can give you a second chance at those difficult situations you might have been placed in before. Research
shows that our brains never stop developing, and parenting provides you with an opportunity for lifelong learning.
• Response flexibility. It’s extremely important to respond to different situations in different ways. It is also sometimes important to respond to the same situation in different ways because of extenuating circumstances. Drs. Siegel and Hartzell write that “Response flexibility is the ability of the mind to sort through a wide variety of mental processes, such as impulses, ideas, and feelings, and come up with a thoughtful, nonautomatic response.” As opposed to a knee-jerk reaction, response flexibility means that you come up with a thoughtful and appropriate response. To that end, children challenge us to remain flexible and to maintain our emotional calm. This is difficult to balance with the need for structure in a child’s life, but responding flexibly helps our children learn to be flexible as well. This flexibility will greatly aid them later in life when they are faced with challenges of their own.
• Mindsight. Mindsight is the capability to see our own minds and the minds of others. This means that we understand that the actions that we take and that others take are just the surface
of what we are feeling, but that there is a deeper process taking place in the mind. As parents, we often respond to our children’s behavior by focusing on the experience itself, rather than what might be going on in the mind. If as a parent, you focus on the mind, you are helping your child develop emotional understanding and building their social skills.
• Joyful living. This one should be an easy one. The idea behind this one is that parents and children should revel in the wondrous world they live in. This is an important piece of creative a child’s positive sense of self. Even our everyday experiences can be joyful. We can reflect on those everyday moments with our children and appreciate them. While it might sound cheesy, simply enjoying being with our children is an important piece of the puzzle. Our Memories, Ourselves Now, we get to the part about using our past experiences to shape who we are as parents, rather than to define us. Of course, when we are parents, our previous experiences influence the way we act with our own children. And, if we have not fully processed those experiences, those possibly negative encounters could trigger negative interactions in our own
parent-child relationships.
Drs. Siegel and Hartzell call these memories “implicit memories,” or memories that are outside of our conscious awareness. Even though these memories are outside of our conscious control, they can change the way we interact with our children. Rather than seeing our children’s actions as present phenomena, we react to them as manifestations of past experience. These implicit memories can interfere with our abilities to live mindfully, respond flexibly, and maintain mindsight. For instance, if you remember your little brother frequently screamed before he went to sleep at night for an hour and no one picked him up, but do not have conscious memory of this, you might react with rage and frustration when your own child screams when he scrapes his knee.
What can you do to prevent these implicit memories from taking over your ability to respond flexibly and live a life of joy? When you feel yourself having a disproportionately extreme reaction to minor setbacks, you can take a moment. Be mindful. See the challenge as an opportunity for growth. Evaluate your choices of response. Look at it through another perspective. And, finally, choose to parent with joy.
· A case report of 100 patients diagnosed with cognitive decline using the ReCODE protocol showed both subjective and objective improvements in all participants
· The ReCODE protocol, which involves identifying the drivers of cognitive decline (such as pathogens, toxins and metabolic changes), then targeting those in a personalized program that includes dietary and lifestyle changes, allows your brain to create and maintain synapses again, thereby treating the root of the problem
· A hallmark of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s is that proteins are aggregated and are typically misfolded
· By inducing ketosis, improving insulin sensitivity and supporting the mitochondria, you can often regain the ability to refold or proteolyze misfolded proteins
· Electromagnetic field exposures, such as that from cellphones and Wi-Fi, may play an important role in Alzheimer’s, as it triggers high amounts of oxidative stress and damage to proteins and DNA
By a famed neurologist:
Alzheimer's disease, which is the most common form of dementia, eventually leads to the inability to carry out even the most basic of bodily functions, such as swallowing or walking. It is ultimately fatal, as conventional treatment options are few and universally ineffective.
Like autism among children, Alzheimer's among seniors has reached epidemic proportions, with no slowdown in sight. On the contrary, evidence suggests the trend is worsening. In 2022, Alzheimer's affects more than 6 million Americans, and 1 in 3 seniors dies with dementia or other demention. By 2050, Alzheimer's diagnoses are projected to reach 13.8 million.
While the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention lists the disease as the seventh leading cause of death in the U.S., statistics published in the journal Neurology in 2014 revealed Alzheimer's is vastly underreported on death certificates. In reality, the disease likely killed 503,400 American seniors in 2010, making it the third leading cause of death, right behind heart disease and cancer.
The good news is that contrary to conventional claims, there are ways to prevent and even treat this tragic disease — not by drugs, but by diet and other lifestyle changes.
Dr. Dale Bredesen, professor of molecular and medical pharmacology at the University of California, Los Angeles School of Medicine, has identified a number of molecular mechanisms at work in Alzheimer's, and created a novel program called ReCODE to treat and reverse it. 100-Patient Case Report Sheds Light on
One of Bredesen's publications is a case report of 100 patients using the ReCODE protocol. He had previously published three case reports, each involving just 10 patients. This fourth case report contains 100 patients treated at 15 different clinics across the U.S., all of which have documented pre- and post-cognitive testing.
Not only did all show improvement in symptoms, some of them also showed improvement in their quantitative electroencephalographs (EEGs). Others who underwent magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with volumetrics also showed objective improvement.
"By all the criteria, these people showed improvement, subjective and objective," Bredesen says. This is no small thing, as there is no conventional treatment that can reverse Alzheimer's. There have been many drug trials to date, but all have failed to reverse the disease. As noted by Bredesen:
"There are a couple of medications, Aricept, Namenda … but these have a very, very modest impact. The most important thing is their improvement is not sustained. They don't change the outcome of the disease. You get a little bump in improvement, then you go right back to declining.
The most important part of the [ReCODE] protocol … is that the improvement is sustained. You're actually going after the root cause of what is causing the cognitive decline. That's a big difference."
If one were to summarize Bredesen's approach in one sentence, it would be "to improve the ratio between synaptoblastic and synaptoclastic activity, which is the brain's ability to create new synapses versus destroying them." In other words, the treatment allows your brain to create and maintain synapses again. Bredesen
explains:
"The molecular biology of this disease shows that what we call Alzheimer's disease is actually a protective response. It's essentially a scorched-earth retreat.
You're pulling back and saying, 'We're not going to let this insult kill us, so we're going to scorch the earth so it (whether it's bacteria or something else) cannot take advantage … of what's there.' You're literally downsizing [your synapses]. As long as those insults are going on, you will be downsized."
Beta-amyloid is a protein that is highly correlated with Alzheimer's. However, all attempts at removing it have failed to improve the condition. Clearly, beta-amyloid in and of itself is not the primary cause, so simply getting rid of it is not the answer.
In Bredesen's paper, he discusses the role of beta-amyloid as an antimicrobial peptide (AMP). Importantly, AMPs are critically important for host immunity. They target organisms such as bacteria, mycobacteria, viruses, fungi and protozoa. He explains:
"Here is the trick. It turns out amyloid beta is really part of the innate immune system. Its antimicrobial effect was first discovered and published by professor Robert Moir and professor Rudy Tanzi at Harvard.
This thing actually has, again, a protective response. Not only is it an AMP, but it also binds some toxins. For example, mercury, other divalent metals like iron and things like that. [Amyloid beta] has multiple effects. It is part of your response to insult.
When you take that into account, you realize it's fine to remove amyloid, but please don't do it before you remove all the insults. We've seen numerous people now who have had the amyloid reduced and gotten worse because the ongoing insults are still there."
In 2019, the drug company Biogen
halted its Phase II clinical trial for aducanumab, a drug designed to remove beta-amyloid, and this is the typical story for these kinds of drugs. And then a major trial of yet another approach to amyloid removal, the BACE inhibitor CNP520, was halted because the drug was associated with increased cognitive decline and brain atrophy.
About one-third of the proteins your body makes on any given day are misfolded. Thankfully, your body has a mechanism by which those misfolded proteins are refolded. Heat-shock proteins play a central role in this process, and if the misfolding is too severe, the heat-shock proteins help remove them altogether.
In fact, heat-shock proteins are a corollary of autophagy, the process by which your body cleans out damaged organelles. This relates to Alzheimer's, because the refolding process is one of several factors that need to work in order for your brain to function. As noted by Bredesen:
"In all of these different neurodegenerative diseases, whether you're talking about Alzheimer's, Huntington's, Lou Gehrig's disease, Parkinson's disease or Lewy body, they all feature proteins that are aggregated and that are typically misfolded. They are not degraded appropriately.
You lose not only the ability to fold but the ability to degrade these proteins. That is a critical piece. In fact, just recently, an article came out on a common neurodegenerative condition, newly described, which is called LATE, which is limbicpredominant, age-related TDP-43 encephalopathy.
In other words, this is a little bit like Alzheimer's … [LATE] features TDP-43, which is a protein that is involved in numerous things, including protein
folding … We lose that [proteinfolding] ability as we start to downsize [synapses], as you don't have an appropriate energy, you don't have the appropriate trophic support.
You don't have the appropriate hormonal and nutritional support … When we target ketosis, when we target insulin sensitivity, when we target mitochondrial support, that typically allows you to generate the appropriate ability to refold misfolded proteins …
You can induce the heat-shock response … by doing this combination of sauna and then [going] into the cold and then back to the sauna and then back to the cold …
You are recurrently activating this critical response [by doing that]. There's no question it is going to be important, especially in ALS, but likely in all of the neurodegenerative conditions."
As noted by Bredesen, there are three kinds of autophagy: macroautophagy, micro-autophagy and chaperone-mediated autophagy. Each offers a slightly different way to repair, remove or recycle damaged organelles within the cell.
Specific proteins, for example, can be targeted for chaperonemediated autophagy. Bredesen recounts findings of research he did to ascertain the linkage between protein folding and programmed cell death (apoptosis, where the entire cell is killed off and removed):
"If you fail to reform these [misfolded proteins], you literally activate an entire system that initially stops producing more protein. It's basically saying, 'We're not keeping up with this. We're going to shut this down.' It attempts to refold. Then it attempts to destroy the proteins if it can't refold them.
Then ultimately, if it cannot … keep up … it literally activates programmed cell death through specific caspases … This is something where you want to intervene upstream; understand why this is happening. And then if you're unable to keep up with this, now, at least increase your heat-shock proteins so that you can refold. In this case, you prevent the induction of programmed cell death."
Unfortunately, a vast majority of people do not have well-functioning autophagy, for the simple reason that they're insulin-resistant. If you're insulin-resistant, you cannot increase your adenosine 5' monophosphateactivated protein kinase (AMPK) level, which prevents the inhibition of mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR), and mTOR inhibition is one of the primary drivers of autophagy.
While autophagy is clearly of critical importance, you don't want to be in continuous autophagy. You also need to cycle through the rebuilding phase. One of the ways in which you can control this is through cyclical fasting. Bredesen typically recommends an intermittent fasting approach.
"You want to use appropriate fasting and an appropriate diet to activate this autophagy," Bredesen says. "We recommend … 12 to 14 hours [of fasting] if you are apolipoprotein E4negative (ApoE4-negative) … If you are ApoE4-positive, you'd want to go longer — 14 to 16 hours. There's nothing wrong with doing a longer fast …
The reason we suggest longer for the ApoE4-positives [is because] if you are ApoE4-positive, you are better at absorbing fat. It tends to take longer to enter autophagy …
Typically, we recommend it about once a week. But again, a longer fast once a month is a good idea. It
depends a lot on your body mass index (BMI). What we found is people who have higher BMIs respond better to this fasting early on. They're able to generate the ketones.
If you lose both the carbohydrates and the ketones, you end up [feeling] completely out of energy … We are very careful when people are down below 20 on their BMI, especially the ones 18 or below. We want to be very careful to make sure to cycle them [in and out of ketosis] once or twice a week …
These are the ones where, often, exogenous ketones can be very helpful early on … Measure your ketones. It's simple to do. We want to get you into, ultimately, the 1.5 to 4.0 millimolar [range for] betahydroxybutyrate. That is the goal."
So, to recap, while dementia patients with excess weight tend to respond favorably to cyclical fasting, at least initially, underweight patients may experience cognitive decline, as they're simply too underweight to produce ketones in response to the fasting. For those who are underweight, Bredesen recommends using a ketone supplement such as medium-chain triglycerides (MCT) oil.
If that doesn't bring you into the desired ketone level (1.5 to 4.0 mmol), or if it's adversely affecting your lowdensity lipoprotein (LDL) particle number, he might recommend exogenous ketones — either ketone esters or salts. "We'd like to look at your LDL particle number and use that to titrate, to make sure that your LDL particle number is not too high," he says.
To test your ketones, I recommend KetoCoachX. It's one of the least expensive testing devices on the market right now. Another good one is KetoMojo. KetoCoach, however, is less expensive, the strips are individually
packed and the device is about half as thick as KetoMojo's, making it easier to travel with.
Nutritional ketosis, in which your body produces endogenous ketones (water-soluble fats), is important for all neurodegenerative diseases, but it's not a complete cure-all. Bredesen explains:
"What we've come to realize from the research over the years is that neurodegenerative diseases, whether Alzheimer's … macular degeneration … Lewy body, Parkinson's or ALS, they all have one thing in common. They are related to specific subdomains of the nervous system.
Each of these has a unique requirement for nutrients, hormones, trophic factors, et cetera … In each case, there is a mismatch between the supply and the demand. For most of your life, you're keeping up with that demand. With all of these diseases, you have a repeated or a chronic mismatch between the support and the requirement.
In Parkinson's disease, it's quite clear. You can create Parkinson's disease simply by inhibiting mitochondrial Complex I. That specific subdomain of motor modulation, which is what Parkinson's is all about, is the thing that is the most sensitive to reductions in mitochondrial Complex I support.
Therefore, when people have this, you need to bring the supply back in line with the demand. A critical way to do that is to supply the appropriate ketosis — the appropriate energy.
Now, if the person is continuing to be exposed to whatever chemicals are inhibiting Complex I — and it's typically … mold-related biotoxins or organic toxins such as paraquat or glyphosate — as long as these are ongoing, you're going to get very temporary relief.
The goal here is both to get rid of what is inhibiting Complex I and to flood the system, to help the system by giving appropriate support for the energetics … With Alzheimer's, we're really talking about a mismatch in trophic support. You've got this ongoing need as you're making neuroplasticity."
Although I am not ApoE4-positive, I prefer fasting for 16 hours a day, essentially narrowing my eating window to just four to six hours. I also make sure to eat my last meal three to six hours before bedtime. One of the reasons for this advice is because avoiding late-night eating will increase your nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+) levels, which are important for a variety of bodily functions.
Importantly, it will also reduce nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADPH), which is essentially the true cellular battery of your cell and has the reductive potential to recharge your antioxidants. The largest consumer of NADPH is the creation of fatty acids.
If you're eating close to bedtime, then you're not going to be able to use the NADPH to burn those calories as energy. Instead, they must be stored some way. To store them, you have to create fat, so you're basically radically lowering your NADPH levels when you eat late at night because they are being consumed to store your extra calories by creating fat.
Bredesen's protocol includes this strategy as well. He calls his approach "KetoFlex 12/3," because it generates mild ketosis and is flexible diet-wise. It can be done whether you're a vegetarian or not. The 12/3 stands for a 12-hour minimum fast each day, and eating the last meal three hours before bedtime.
Certain supplements, including berberine, resveratrol, curcumin,
quercetin and fisetin also boost autophagy, and can be used in addition to the nutritional timing. Bredesen explains:
"Sirtuin-1 (SIRT1) was identified as a critical molecule, both for longevity and has been studied extensively for its effects on longevity, but also for its effects on Alzheimer's disease …
ApoE4 actually enters the nucleus and downregulates the production of this critical molecule, so you can see one of its many effects on Alzheimer's disease. Well, when SIRT1 is made, it is actually made in an autoinhibitory fashion. It's just like having a gun in a holster. It's not active … NAD activates the SIRT1.
So does resveratrol. This is why people take resveratrol [or] nicotinamide riboside. These are both activating this program, which is moving you from … more of a pro-inflammatory approach to a longevity approach — a change in your metabolic pattern. That includes activating things like autophagy and also having an anti-Alzheimer's and a pro-longevity effect ...
[Q]uercetin also has an interesting impact on senescent cells … I think that that's going to turn out to be an important way to impact a number of age-related conditions, including neurodegeneration."
The drawback, and the reason you cannot rely on supplements alone, is that the bioabsorption of these polyphenols, like quercetin for example, is quite low. Oftentimes, you cannot absorb enough to get the full benefits.
There's also convincing evidence showing electromagnetic field exposures (EMFs) such as that from cellphones and Wi-Fi play an important role. Bredesen agrees, and recommends his patients limit such exposures. In summary, EMFs activate your voltagegated calcium channels, allowing
the release of excess nitric oxide and superoxide in the cell, resulting in the creation of peroxynitrite.
Peroxynitrite causes similar damage to your DNA as ionizing radiation. It also damages your stem cells, mitochondria, proteins and cell membranes. Poly-ADP ribose polymerase helps repair DNA damage by extracting an adenosine diphosphate (ADP) molecule from NAD. Approximately 100 to 150 NAD are required to repair a single DNA break.
While this process works quite well, problems arise when continuous DNA damage requiring continuous PARP activation occurs, as this ends up decimating your NAD+ level. Bredesen adds:
"This is a critical area. The big problem we've had with this so far is that we can measure your NF-κB activation; we can measure your status of hormones, nutrients, magnesium, on and on and on. Typically, with our approach, we measure 150 different variables.
There is no simple way to measure the effect of EMF on a given person's nervous system. I look forward to the day when we can do a test and say, 'Aha. This person has 27.2 on their effects on their voltage-gated calcium channels because of EMFs.' Because then we'll really be able to alter that.
For now, the best we can say is — just as we go after biotoxins and chemotoxins — [EMF] is a physical toxin. The best we can say is, 'Minimize that to the extent you can.' You can certainly measure the exposure. We just don't have a good way yet to measure its effect on your brain."

AVery many people actually have H. pylori infections but they don’t even know that they are infected! What is an H. pylori infection? Helicobacter pylori(H. pylori) is a type of bacteria. These germs can enter your body and live in your digestive tract for years. After many years, they can cause sores, called ulcers, in the lining of your stomach or the upper part of your small intestine. People that have H. pylori feel bloated and nauseous and have a lack of appetite. They may also lose weight since they have no drive to eat. People with H. pylori can also have constant stomach pain which literally feels like a burning pain that gets worse when you are hungry. Infection with H. pylori is common. About two-thirds of the world’s population has it in their bodies! For most people, it doesn’t cause ulcers or any other symptoms. (As more of the world gets access to clean water and sanitation, fewer people than before are getting the bacteria. With good health habits, you can protect yourself and your children from H. pylori.) After H. pylori enters your body, it attacks the lining of your stomach, which usually protects you from the acid your body uses to digest food. Once the bacteria have done enough damage, acid can get through the lining, which leads to ulcers. These may bleed, cause infections, or keep food from moving through your digestive tract. H. pylori can be diagnosed via bloodwork, stool
samples, upper GI testing and breath tests.
Antibiotics- Antibiotics are used to kill the bacteria. Your doctor may also provide you with medications that will prevent your body from producing more stomach acids. It’s really important to take everything that your doctor prescribes and to follow their instructions. If you don’t take antibiotics the right way, bacteria in your body can become resistant to them, which makes infections harder to treat. About 1-2 weeks after you finish your treatment, your doctor may test your breath or stool again to make sure the infection is gone.
Probiotics: Probiotics help maintain the balance between good and bad gut bacteria. Antibiotics kill both good and bad bacteria in your stomach so probiotics help replenish good bacteria. They may also reduce your risk of developing yeast overgrowth. Researchers found evidence to suggest that the bacteria Lactobacillus acidophilus delivers the best results. Taking probiotics is also especially important specifically now since you just took medication which likely killed your good bacteria as well.
Spicy foods may worsen your symptoms. Particularly spicy foods worth limiting or avoiding include jalapeño and cayenne peppers and salsa. Replace hot peppers with fruits and
vegetables such as apples, celery, onions, garlic, and cranberries, which may help slow the growth of H. pylori.
Coffee, with or without caffeine, can increase stomach acid production, raising your risk for ulcer symptoms. Carbonated beverages such as soft drinks and mineral water can have similar effects. Choose flat water and less-acidic beverages such as herbal teas instead. Caffeine can also worsen ulcer symptoms, so avoid caffeine-containing foods such as chocolate and coffee-flavored ice cream and candies.
Avoid pickled foods. Since pickling involves preserving foods in vinegar, pickled foods are generally very acidic, and eating large amounts of acidic foods may irritate your stomach lining further. If you're prone to H. pylori infections, limit your intake of pickled foods, such as pickles, and herring. Amp up your fresh vegetable intake instead.
Having a healthy diet with plenty of broccoli, olive oil, curcumin, green tea, and probiotic rich foods can really help you heal as well.
You can protect yourself from getting an H. pylori infection with the same steps you take to keep other germs at bay by washing your hands often, only drinking clean water, and by only eating foods that are cooked thoroughly.
QI was diagnosed with an H. pylori bacterial infection this summer. I was on antibiotics for a while to get rid of the infection and now that I am done, I would like to know what I can do from a nutritional perspective to heal my insides and live better.
Maimonides Medical Center in Boro Park on Wednesday unveiled a newly renovated cardiothoracic intensive care unit for patients recovering from heart surgeries.
The unit was last revamped in the early 1990s, but a $6.5 million injection from local donors helped the hospital complete $15 million in improvements there, including advanced equipment, monitors and therapies, 14 larger private patient rooms, in-unit bathrooms, sofa beds for family members to spend the night, better lighting and aesthetic improvements, and a new room designed for visitors with comfortable seating and amenities.
The unit will serve more than 1,000 patients annually who come to Maimonides for procedures, such as heart surgery, cardiac bypass surgery, valve replacement and repair, aortic aneurysm repair, minimally invasive heart surgery, transcatheter aortic valve replacement, left ventricular assist device implantation, convergent atrial fibrillation ablation and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation.
“At its core it’s not a capacity
upgrade, it’s a patient experience upgrade,” said Ken Gibbs, the hospital’s chief executive. “Our patients were asleep in the operating room and awake in a 30-year-old intensive care unit, and it was not a good experience.”
“We wanted to do it [the renovation] for a while,” Gibbs said, “but the critical aspect was the engagement of community donors. We had philanthropic leadership coming forward.”
The 10,000-square-foot center is staffed with 45 nurses, six surgeons, three intensivists, two associates and seven nurse practitioners.
The Karfunkel family, which dedicated the unit’s main entrance in memory of Michael Karfunkel, a former Maimonides board member, led the ribbon-cutting on Wednesday. Other major philanthropic leaders dedicated the unit’s 14 patient rooms, and the new family and visitors lounge was dedicated through the Stavros Niarchos Foundation.
The cardiothoracic intensive care unit is on the fourth floor of the hospital where the original ICU was.
Maimonides Health is Brooklyn’s largest healthcare system, serving over 300,000 patients each year through the system’s 3 hospitals, 1800 physicians and more than 80 community-based practices and outpatient centers. The system is anchored by Maimonides Medical Center, one of the nation’s largest independent teaching hospitals and home to centers of excellence in numerous specialties; Maimonides Midwood Community Hospital (formerly New York Community Hospital), a 130-bed adult medicalsurgical hospital; and Maimonides Children’s Hospital, Brooklyn’s only children’s hospital and only pediatric trauma center. Maimonides’ clinical programs rank among the best in the country for patient outcomes, including its Heart and Vascular Institute, Neurosciences Institute, Bone and Joint Center, and Cancer Center.

BJX (Brooklyn Jewish Xperience), Brooklyn's Kiruv Center, had beautiful celebrations on different nights of Chanukah for precious Yiddishe Neshamos that attend our public high school and college divisions. It was breathtaking to see young men and women from our neighborhood become spiritually aflame as they learned about what it means to be Jewish and had an incredible time enjoying the delicious menus. The highlight was the Menorah lighting. The grand and exquisite Menorah, a true masterpiece, reminiscent of the Menorah in the Beis Hamikdash was lit at BJX. It was beautiful to hear the Beracha of Shehechiyanu being recited even though it wasn't the first day of Chanukah by our local Jewish brothers and sisters kindling the Menorah for the first time!
Michael, a Brooklyn College student, summed up his feelings: “It was an amazing night. The light of the Chanukah candles was glowing on everyone's faces. Being involved with BJX has been the most inspiring. experience. I can't thank the Rabbis enough for always caring about me and making sure that I am able to observe Torah and Mitzvos.”

I knew it wasn’t good for me. I knew it wasn’t what I wanted.
Still, it was hard to make the move. The non-kosher smartphone remained in my pocket.
I really had no good excuse. The device was not really necessary for my job, so I couldn’t blame it on “parnassah.”
But the yetzer hara is good at what he does. More than once, in a moment of inspiration, I decided I would try to get rid of the smartphone. But each time, new explanations and excuses came up, stopping me from taking action. I even recognized that it was really just the good old yetzer hara who was behind the rationalizations.
One day, as if out of nowhere, I felt an extreme surge of inspiration. I had no idea why the feeling overcame me, but it did. It wasn’t any special time of year or anything, just a “regular” day… And something inside me was pushing me to jump in, to cleanse myself of this gadget that was suddenly burning a hole in my pocket.
I dumped my non-kosher device and hurried over to the store to replace it with a simple Meushar phone, before I could turn back.
I felt so clean, so pure, so exhilarated. My entire being was suffused with happiness.
Just then, I met my brother-inlaw – a very chashuve kollel yungerman and talmid chacham. He detected the glint in my eye and the overwhelming joy that was written all over my face.
“What makes you so happy today?” he asked.
I told him all that had transpired: the inexplicable inspiration, how I finally disposed of the unwanted, yet tempting, phone, about the new kosher flip-phone I had bought, and the real simchah shel mitzvah that it generated.
My brother-in-law seemed moved. “Let me tell you a part of this story that you don’t even know…”
I looked at him curiously. What might he know about my story that I’m not aware of?!
“For a long time, now, I was very disturbed by your smartphone. I knew it wasn’t good for you, and because of my love for you, I very much wanted to open your eyes. I wanted to help you understand how bad the phone was for you and how you were destroying your life with your own hands. You yourself hardly realized how the phone was leading you in a direction you surely did not want to go… But I didn’t want to risk our close relationship, so I didn’t say anything.
“Still, I could not keep quiet. I decided I would try a different avenue. I began to learn the sefer Ohr Hachaim Hakadosh, hoping that Hashem would shine the right “ohr” into your life. I hoped you would be able to recognize on your own where you are heading and where you really want to go.
“For the last forty days, I learned every day and I begged the Ribbono Shel Olam that in the zechus of the Ohr Hachaim Hakadosh, you and your children should be helped.”
My brother-in-law paused. “Today is the fortieth day.”

R’ Aharon Karliner once went to Yartchiv for Shabbos. He Davened in the Statchein Bais medrash Shachris and Mussaf. After daveining, he went over to the Rav of the city. He asked him, “Tell me, do you know who used to Daven in this shul in the past years?”
The Rav answered, “Yes, The Kaminker Rav.”
R’ Aharon Karliner then said, “Aha, aha, R’ Shulimker, R’ Shulimke….that’s why I felt Kedusha in this place!”

Authorities in a Missouri county confirmed a kangaroo was recently spotted roaming loose around a road. At least one local resident captured the animal on camera during its time on the loose. They said the kangaroo is believed to have escaped from S and S Farms Exotic Petting Zoo in High Ridge.
Officials with the petting zoo confirmed the kangaroo seen on the loose is named Rueben and was safely returned to the facility after only a short time on the loose.
Blue birds, blue birds

The streets have gone Cold and white Brrr... I feel it in my bones

From ear to ear
An orange, pointy nose
Proud Oh, so proud He stands
With a hat of felt A buckled belt
Which animal has feet but no legs?
How can 8+8 equal 4?
I am a bird, I am a fruit and I am a person too. What am I?
1) Penguins. 2) When it’s in time. 8:00 plus 8 hours is 4:00. 3) A kiwi.
