Good work recognised

Th is is to let everybody know about the good work Penrith Community Kitchen did on Friday, December 23 at the PCYC Building in Station Street, Penrith. The volunteer workers looked after each and every one to the best they could. Each table had a person to look after the group. They had a good stage with entertainment and fi nished up with a free raffle and two full bags with presents. Congratulations Penrith Community Kitchen. Taxi monopoly?

On two occasions this month I have been let down by Premier Cabs. First, being left standing outside Nepean Public Hospital’s West Block for almost an hour until two kind ladies, on seeing this exhausted 85-year-old needed help, drove me home. The second was when I arranged with the Premier Cab’s driver who drove my daughter and myself to the same hospital’s North Block to pick us up at 5pm. The cab failed to arrive. We waited 30 minutes before asking the understanding lady manning the rehab office to call a cab for us. Strangely, the only number available to her was Premier Cabs. Reaching home, I searched the phone book but failed to fi nd another taxi cab, private or company, listed for Penrith. It appears Premier Cabs have, one way or another, established a monopoly in

Penrith. If so, this, as my experience has shown, is not a good thing. Mervyn Grant, Cambridge Park . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

ANZAC Day is protected

Australia is preparing to commemorate the Centenary of Anzac from 2014 to 2018, marking 100 years since our nation’s involvement in the First World War. Over this period we will remember not only the Anzacs who served at Gallipoli and the Western Front, but all Australian servicemen and women who have served in wars, confl icts and peacekeeping operations. The media reporting suggesting there would be branding of Anzac Day is wrong. There is no such plan for 25 April 2015 or any other year. What is being developed is a specific motif for the centenary program similar to the way a motif was developed for the highly acclaimed Australia Remembers – created to mark the 50th anniversary of the end of the Second World War. The fi nal motif will convey to the Australian community the overall theme for the four year centenary program. The Anzac Centenary Advisory Board, which includes many eminent Australians and is chaired by the former Chief of the Defence Force, Air Chief Marshal Angus Houston, AC, AFC (Ret’d), supports the development of the motif. It is unfortunate that the public has been mislead by inaccurate media reporting. Warren Snowden, Veterans Affairs Minister

TOM STEINFORT

So by now I hope your New Year’s Eve hangover has subsided (if not, it could be time to consult a doctor). Already, most people are back to work, back to the usual routine, and you’ve already forgotten those pesky resolutions you pledged at 12.01am on January 1, 2012. So many ambitious folk set goals that are like they’re fielding questions at a Miss Universe competition – make the world a better place, stop global warming etc… gimme a break. The ones that annoy me most are celebrities – invariably because all they

even more ridiculous, because he simply wants to beat his nephew at the annual f a m i l y t able t en n i s competition. These responses may go some way to showing how vain/stupid my friends are, or perhaps more so the fact that they were drunk at the time of their resolutions. If you do struggle with you r resolut ions, t he comforting thing to know is that there are actually now a series of apps for your mobile phone that pledge to help you achieve. I don’t think I need an app for my new year’s resolution though. Me, I’m a simple man, some might say boring – I have the same resolution every year, without fail. So far, it’s worked every time: make this year better than the last. Hopefully my trend continues... here’s to a happy 2012! See you next week.

talk about is losing weight. In just ONE article I read, the following celebrities said their goal for 2012 was to shed kilos: Mariah Carey, Jessica Simpson, Janet Jackson, Charles Barkley, and Jennifer Hudson. That’s just what the world needs – another yo-yo dieting celebrity to plaster across the f ront page of g lossy magazines. But when it comes to real people and real goals, I’ve had few funnier conversations this year than when I sat down with some of my friends and discussed what their new year’s resolutions were. One woman has decided she wants to learn how to shuff le, a dance move popular with teenagers... the reason – she wants to perform it as her bridal waltz. Then there is the guy who has made it his mission for 2012 to get better at table tennis. His reason is arguably
