Memorial coming
Friday 16 January 2015 « the western weekender
A permanent Memorial to the victims, hostages, police and emergency service workers involved in the Lindt Café siege will be unveiled mid-way through 2015, according to NSW Premier, Mike Baird. “We will never forget Katrina Dawson and Tori Johnson, or the suffering that their loss inflicted on their loved ones,” Mr Baird said. “Nor will we forget the ordeal of the surviving hostages, or the courage of those police and emergency workers who put themselves in the line of fire on the awful morning of December 16 last year.” The Martin Place Siege Memorial Committee has been developed to oversee the design and construction of the permanent Memorial.
Locals listen The Animal Welfare League, which has a shelter at Kemps Creek, is praising the local community after recording its lowest number of post-Christmas abandoned pet cases ever. Each year the organisation is forced to take on hundreds of dogs and cats that are abandoned or surrendered because they are unwanted by the people who receive them as surprise gifts during the silly season. The organisation campaigns each year to encourage people not to give pets as surprise gifts and this year their campaign paid off, as it is the first year that the organisation did not have an influx of animals in the aftermath of the Christmas and New Year period, much to the delight of staff and management.
PENRITH CBD
Penrith is “lopsided” Balance and variety needed in Penrith CBD’s future Story continued from » p. 1 While Mr Drane will be using his studies of other towns and cities to help create a vision for Penrith’s future, he will be endeavouring to keep Penrith the town that locals love and enjoy. “Penrith is Penrith. It has got to have its own identity,” he said. In just four weeks, while it is too short a time for Mr Drane to form any specific ideas and plans, he can already see the potential that Henry Street and the Allen Place car park presents. “With the Westfield generating a lot of energy, Penrith is a bit lopsided. Riley Street is the happening cafe area, with all the wonderful foods you can get,” he said. “I am looking forward, if it is what Penrith wants, to see a balance created, where the quiet end of town presents a variety of different offerings for the 183,000 people who live here.” Mr Drane said that these offerings could come in a number of different forms, including an increased number of multicultural food options. PBA Chairman Paul Brennan said Mr Drane’s intimate understanding of the challenges in dealing with the players in the property development market will prove invaluable to the organisation.
