MILAN URBAN FOOD POLICY PACT WRITTEN BY CAMILLA AKERS-DOUGLAS

The Milan Urban Food Policy Pact, signed in 2015, is a declaration of optimism about the ability of cities to reinvent themselves and develop more sustainable food systems. It is a voluntary commitment by the mayors of more than 100 cities worldwide to promote healthy diets. Its goal is healthy and affordable food for all city dwellers, while minimising waste and conserving biodiversity. The pact promises to shape local food supply chains and aims to encourage cooperation between all layers of a city’s food system, be they municipal, regional, national or international.

“As a Milanese, I am very proud that Milan has initiated the Urban Food Policy Pact to save waste, promote sustainable food systems and promote healthy diets,” says Anna.

“As an Italian and particularly as a cookery writer on Italian food I know the importance of good ingredients and a healthy diet. Food waste has always been low in Italy, partly because of the fact that Italy had been a relatively poor country until the second half of the 20th century, and partly because the Italians know their ingredients, how Although voluntary, food campaigners have welcomed the to make the best use of them and the full meaning of ‘best pact’s optimistic vision of a future with local food supply by’ or ‘sell by’ package labelling.” chains and local food cultures. The pact seeks a greener, healthier and fairer food system by ensuring greater collaboration between all layers of civic life. The pact is intended to be a starting point from which cities can develop their own urban food system and a direct response to the threat of climate change: research shows that unless the food system changes there is little hope of reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

6

It is a vision endorsed by the veteran Italian food writer Anna del Conte. She grew up in Milan and experienced the culinary hardships imposed by World War II. In 1949 she moved to England and through her books helped transform Britain’s understanding and appreciation of Italian cooking.

The PACT at a Glance 1. Cities can play a major role developing sustainable food systems and promoting healthy diets 2. Urbanisation has a profound social, economical and environmental impact so cities must re-examine how they provide food and water 3. Hunger and malnutrition exist in all cities 4. Family farms and smallholders play a key role in feeding cities, so are a means to reconnect consumers with rural and urban producers 5.Urban and semi-urban agriculture offer opportunities to protect and integrate biodiversity into city landscapes and food systems 6. As food policies are closely related to other urban challenges (such as poverty) an interdisciplinary and inter-institutional approach is necessary 7. Civil society and the private sector have major roles to play in feeding cities 8. Cities must honour their commitments to address climate change and promote sustainable management of biodiversity 9. Cities strive to achieve international targets, such as the Sustainable Development Goals

Spring has to be my favourite time of the year. After what feels like an especially long winter (or is that my age?!), it is so heartening to see plants, only recently crushed by snow come into life again. Our senses are revived with an explosion of sight, sound and colour. Blossom is arguably one of the most iconic heralds of spring. Whether on hawthorn or fruiting trees, these flowers are shortlived so it’s best to enjoy them before the white and pink petals fall like confetti. So, outside of the UK, where might you see one of nature’s finest floral displays?

Curitiba which opened in 1991 and draws inspiration from the gardens of Versailles. It was Japan where the practice of hanami (the custom of observing the fragile beauty of flowers) began. Whilst abundant throughout Japan, Kyoto is a good bet at the start of April. Here, you’ll find the Philosopher’s Path, following a canal lined with hundreds of cherry trees, and Maruyama Park, famous for its large weeping cherry tree. The University of Washington in Seattle received 31 trees from the Washington Park Arboretum, from a collection originally gifted by Japan to Seattle in 1912. A RARE PATH WRITTEN BY EMMA SCHWARZ

Ever wanted to hike a breath-taking section of coastline in Europe and feel like you are walking high in the sky yet in clear view of crashing waves below? Well, the Sentiero degli Dei or “Path of the Gods” on the Amalfi coast, Italy is for you! The actual length of the entire Amalfi coast is 40-50km from Salerno to Sorrento. The official “Path of the Gods” route is one mere section (about 10km) of this coastline, running between Bomerano and Nocelle; all the guides say start in Bomerano and end in Nocelle! The path literally travels across the sheer cliffs of this part of the Amalfi coastline and the views are simply incredible. Another wonderful fact about this particular route is that the inclines and descents are moderate, most of the path is easy to walk, with only a few hairy bits when the ropes and posts guarding the footpath can be a bit sparse! But, in general, this path is great for all ages and safe for children as long as they are not walking miles ahead or behind you! Most people take about 2-3 hours to walk this route, and there are plenty of tips online on many walkers’ sites including www. pathofgods.com/into-the-path/inside-the-path-of-the-gods/ You can reward yourself at the finish in Nocelle with some homemade lemon Granite. Don’t miss it!

14

If you’re tempted to walk more of the Amalfi coast, then a good base is either Positano or Amalfi town itself; both can be reached by bus or boat if you have travelled from Naples to Sorrento or you may have come from the coast of France. There are many routes documented and signposted. Another Rare one is a walk through the hillside above Amalfi, through the lemon groves and wooded pathways dotted with derelict Paper Mills. Handmade paper production was a medieval artisan tradition in that part of the Italian coast, long before Limoncello! If you do this walk, don’t miss the Museum of Paper to learn more about this aspect of Italian history. Driving Italy’s Amalfi coastline is glamorously depicted in many films and media but walking it is by far the best way to appreciate the beauty of this rare part of the world. Nocelle

You know what it’s like when you meet someone and just know you’re going to be friends. You both have a glass of wine in your hand. You laugh at the same things. You have the same boots.... and jacket. And in fact, bra. A while later you’re chatting and discover you went to the same college a long way from home and realise you lived in the same house. And this all happens when you live on the same street! So that’s how it was, and, as we rested our glasses on a friend’s ironing board one sunny evening, the idea of 64South was born..... We like the same things. We hope you like what we like. 16

Founder Story ROOST Collections are “Original, inspiring & made for you”. So what do we mean? Well simply put we love to find gifts that are different, beautifully made, and that don’t cost the earth. We search the world for products that are inspirational and inspiring for you, your family, your friends and your home too!

ROOST was born in January 2015 in a small village in the Sussex countryside. It started from a frustration at not being able to find a lovely present for a friend. We then soon realised it always seemed to be a struggle to find the right present......whether that be for a birthday, Christmas, house warming, christening, or just a little thank-you (that isn’t flowers or chocolates again!). With all of this in mind and the fact we are all so busy we have brought together in one place gifts that are different, beautifully made and all at great prices. Founder Gill Bruce

Founder Story

Rachel Smith-Bingham made the move from management consulting and media into fashion to establish BUNKS, her swimwear brand for men and boys, that combines unique design, exclusivity and a respect for our oceans. BUNKS launched in Spring 2017… I am not from a retail or ‘fashion’ background so I have needed to learn a lot too. One point that’s really important is that I have set up BUNKS to be a brand that is related to memorable holidays and travel rather than as a fashion brand. I am proud that the BUNKS product has some unique attributes, such as the environmentally friendly packaging, the swing tag/ luggage label and the UV protection in the fabric. Also, BUNKS does not add any more plastic to the world’s oceans and that there is an exclusivity to BUNKS – the production runs are small – which adds to the uniqueness of the brand. UV protection is a standard for most swimwear brands so it was a ‘given’ that the fabric has to be UPF50 protective (especially since BUNKS started with boys sizes).

LittleLeaf is a family-run business based in Hampshire. With four children of our own, we know how important it is that the fabric you’re putting next to your baby’s skin – and your own – is the kindest and softest it can be. As a family, we think we are fairly environmentally aware: we have a smallholding, grow as much organic veg as we can, keep chickens, have invested in “green” technology in our home, such as rainwater harvesting for our washing machine and for flushing loos, and diligently recycle as much as we can. So why hadn’t we heard about the benefits of organic cotton years ago? We realised that there must be lots of other people out there who didn’t know about it either and so decided to get involved in getting the word out about how much better organic cotton is for you, better for the workers who produce it, and better for the environment in general. By buying organic cotton certified by the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS), you are also helping to ensure that people involved in the growing of organic cotton and the making of our clothes are treated fairly through all the production stages, from fibre to finished product.

There can’t be many sports which give you a sense of serenity, the chance to top up your Vitamin D, plenty of opportunities for laughter and the ability to work your core, all at the same time. Welcome to Paddle Boarding, the world’s fastest-growing watersport.

Low impact: As a very low impact exercise, it is unlikely that you will do damage to the tendons and ligaments of your joints. Paddle boarding is particularly useful for runners that are experiencing shin splints or knee and hip pain, yet still need a good exercise to do while healing.

Reduces stress: Water naturally soothes the body and exercise Samir Becic reveals health benefits of Paddle Boarding in his book ReSYNC Your Life: 28 Days to a Stronger, Leaner, Smarter, helps to reduce stress. The soothing sounds as you glide through the water, the sensation of actually walking on water, and the Happier You. rhythm helps stress to melt away. Improves balance: Standup paddle boarding requires you to stand upright on the board, which demands a lot of core stability Overall increased strength: It’s natural to feel a little sore all and leg strength to maintain balance. Good balance increases over your body after a day’s paddle boarding but this means you are building up your overall body strength. your focus and balance in day-to-day activities. Full body workout: Almost every muscle in the body is used at some point during paddle boarding. Leg muscles work to stabilize your centre of gravity, while the arms, back and shoulders are used to propel the paddleboard in the water. The core, back and abdominal muscles are constantly at work to maintain your balance.

30

Cardio workout: Time on the board can give you a good cardio workout. By racing your friends, it can make paddling more fun and challenging, which is a good way to get the heart rate up. According to iSupWorld.com, paddle boarding improves your cardiovascular health, helping you to avoid heart attacks, strokes and related diseases.

ReSYNC Your Life: 28 Days to a Stronger, Leaner, Smarter, Happier You.

Improves endurance: Once you learn how to standup paddleboard and you notice that your balance is improving and your muscles aren’t getting quite as tired, then you know your endurance is increasing. Allows you to connect with nature: Being out on the water is calming, and engaging with nature can have a positive effect on your mental health and attitude. In addition, getting some extra vitamin D from the sun is good for you! Besides the many health benefits, it’s not too hard to master; a 2-hour introductory session with a qualified instructor (from around £30) will get you up and paddling with confidence. Paddle boarding is less about action and more about enjoyment; it doesn’t need to be a race if you want that feeling of serenity. You can do it solo or enjoy it as a group. For a seemingly new sport, stand up paddle boarding has heritage. It originated in Africa thousands of years ago although the modern version is thought to have been developed in Hawaii in the Sixties when surfers began using canoe paddles to propel themselves. You don’t need to live near the sea to paddle board – if anything, it’s more popular on inland waterways where the lack of waves makes the sport easier to master as a beginner.

Stand-up Paddle boarding is a growing recreational activity on the tidal Thames.  Providing you follow the ‘Paddling on the Tidal Thames’ guide then you may paddleboard between Teddington Lock and Putney Pier during the day. And for those who’ve really caught the bug, The London Stand Up Paddle boarding Marathon is a 26 mile route, starting at Shepperton in Surrey and following the Thames all the way up to Putney — taking in the genteel sites of west London, without having to dodge the river traffic of the centre of the city. For more information about paddle boarding in the UK, why not visit www.bsupa.org.uk
