Happy 2015!

N

ew Year’s wishes of health, happiness and prosperity. The year 2015, wow it almost seems like a title for a sci-fi movie. I still catch myself thinking it’s 19 something, let alone we are 15 years into the new millennium. What’s going on in the world today is much different than anyone would have imagined when the fears of computer glitches, the power grid shutting down and all that nay saying that went on back at the turn-of-the-century. Boy, that line makes me sound like a historian from the early 1900s. Many wanted us to believe there would be no year 2000, that the earth would meet its fate when the clock struck double 12s. I remember back in vacation Bible school at Messiah Lutheran in Southside. My Nanny Webb – Josephine, my Dad’s mom, would have me go and was proud to take me. One year Lisa Claybaugh announced to the summer class that the world would end in the year 2000. We were young, maybe seven or eight. It scared the Kool-Aid and Chips Ahoy cookies out of me. However, I figured that I would be old enough by then, in my 30s, so at least I got to live a long life. You remember how your mind worked when you were young. Now someone in their 30s is young in my eyes. And no worries Lisa, I recovered from your prediction, I did think about it as the ball dropped in 1999 though. Lisa, hope you and your family are well. Worry and fear take away positive energy and effort no matter what the topic is. Only God knows what the future will hold. Trust in our Lord and Savior and live your life in the present and prepare for the future.

BEFORE

With all that is going on in our Great Nation today and the events that are occurring around the world it’s easy to become negative, worried, and well, sometimes just downright angry. Do not fall into this trap. Do not allow the work of evil to take away from all the good and joy in our Great Nation. Do not let the wrong mindset to prevent you from doing “good work” and making sure God, family and Country are priority and your first thoughts of where you are going. You control your own destiny. Too many so called “leaders” want to take that peace from you. They want to enlist you as a worker in their cause or belief. The ladies in my life, led by Michelle, asked me to avoid politics and current world events during the Christmas season. I have happily done so. I would much sooner write about salmon croquettes, area athletes or all the good our area has to offer. It angers me, pains me and flat out saddens me when I do the research and write about Ferguson, Obamacare, ISIS or the mess inside The Washington Beltway. I do so to keep you, the reader, informed of the truth and to honor my father. It was very important to him that the truth was known. He believed media bias was not what the freedom of the press was what our forefathers had in mind. So happy New Year and no worries, I’ll get back after those who need getting after next week. And thanks to my Wife, my Mom and Carol, Steph, Kristy, and Nickie and all who take the time to help and advise. Without all of you I wouldn’t be able to do

what I do. I honestly believe behind every good man is a good woman. I am blessed to have a very large sisterhood behind me. Yes, I know that was not politically correct and often the truth is not. Year End All-Statement It wasn’t too many seasons ago when local high school Jim football was at an all-time Webb, Jr. low. No team recorded a winning season or qualified for Post Season play. My have fortunes changed. With Coach Chris Eiswerth’s South Williamsport Mounties reaching the State A Semi Finals; J.C. Keefer’s Montoursville Warriors winning the District 4 AA Title; Jersey Shore going undefeated in the regular season for Head Coach Tom Gravish and Justin VanFleet’s Loyalsock squad having a strong season only to lose to the Warriors in the District Final, area football is alive and well. Nowhere is this more evident than by the recently selected PIAA All State Gridiron Teams. A team is selected at each of the states four divisions voted on by a panel of Pennsylvania sports writers from around the state. Leading the way was South’s Dominick Bragalone. “The Diesel” was selected the Class A Player of the Year. A back to back honor for him, he shared the award last season. Never was there an easier selection for this honor after he ran for a state record 4,717 yards, scoring a state record 67 TDs. Dom also ran for a state playoff single-game record 439 yards and six TDs versus Pius X. On defense

Coach Eiswerth and Dominick shared 3 special seasons. “The Diesel” ran for 8,749 yards and scored 129 TDs in his career. he was solid; he just flat out liked to hit people. South placed four others among the State’s elite. Riley Thomas gave the Blue and White that deep threat needed to complement their running game. Riley caught 44 passes for 768 yards and scored. He also provided a great return game for the Southsiders and solid play in the secondary. All-around standout John Peters was selected as a linebacker. He was the heart and soul of the Mountie defense. He was also the best fullback I watched this season. Down in the trenches Sam Buck and Cody Nelson earned honors paving the way for Dominick’s state record season. Buck was also a playmaker on the defensive side and had a nose for the ball. Nelson also contributed on the other side of the ball. Loyalsock’s Kyle Datres became a three-time

pproximately 1,200 city residents voluntarily registered for civilian defense jobs during the first day of registration Monday and registration staffs and the committee expressed hopes that many more would sign up for volunteer work today, which concludes the registration period. The 11 city grade school buildings will again be open from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. today to receive registrations. It is estimated that the city will need between 3,000 and 4,000 civilian defense volunteers to properly conduct work here in time of emergency. According to tabulation of registration cards filled yesterday, there seems to be a diversified field from which to draw civilian defense jobs. Fire Chief Michael Clark has already placed a request with the committee for volunteer auxiliary firemen and firewatchers. Many of Monday’s registrants expressed desires to volunteer as air raid wardens and air raid observers. The air raid observation units operated by Garrett Cochran American Legion Post 1 and Royal P. Steinbacher Post 617, have made known desires for more volunteers to man observation for some time and upon request, names of the persons who have expressed a willingness will be furnished to the Legionnaires. Those with special training that would be of value in an emergency are asked at the registration centers to state the nature of the training on registration cards.

iets don’t work. According to the Journal of Clinical Psychology, 45 percent of Americans make New Year’s resolutions each year, and weight-related resolutions top the list. Unfortunately, only about 8 percent achieve any type of resolution, weightrelated or not. If you’ve made (and then broken) the same old weight- or health-oriented resolutions each January, you’re not alone. It might be time to focus on research-proven approaches to get healthier that actually work — without gimmicks, diets that eliminate foods, or buying strange foods and equipment. Start Well: Eat Breakfast Start the day right, and it really can make things go better all day. Research has repeatedly shown that people who eat breakfast tend to take in more nutrients (calcium, iron, protein and fiber), are more alert and can concentrate better, and may even have better success with weight management. To get yourself off to a strong start, think about combining protein, carbohydrates and low-fat dairy. Some possibilities: whole grain cereal and a high protein yogurt, an English muffin with peanut butter, or an egg sandwich with fruit and yogurt.

Eat Rough(age): Make Fiber a Priority Fiber, found in whole grain wheat, barley, corn and oats, as well as in fruits, vegetables and beans, helps keep things moving easily through the digestive tract. Remember that grain fiber has different nutritional benefits than fruits and vegetables, so you need both. Fiber is also filling, providing volume with few calories because our bodies don’t have the enzymes to break it down. But fiber can be digested and used for fuel by the 10 trillion bacteria that live in the colon and prevent numerous health conditions. Get Your Facts Straight: If It Sounds Too Good to be True... Losing 10 pounds in two weeks only to regain it in eight makes no sense. Whether you’ve tried to go glutenfree, low carb or avoid all white foods, chances are quite high that your efforts didn’t result in long lasting effects. What does work? A balanced eating pattern and an active lifestyle. There is no one perfect diet, and anyone who says otherwise is typically selling a book or products promising weight loss. Registered dietitian nutritionists can be trusted to provide credible, evidencebased information that can be tailored to your lifestyle and taste preferences. In addition, eating patterns such as those

Make 2015 Your Year to Improve Financial Fitness

L

ose weight, quit smoking, find a new job and get out of debt…does this sound familiar? Millions of Americans will resolve to change their lives in the New Year, but few will stick with their goals. In fact, a recent survey by the National Endowment for Financial Education (NEFE) finds six in 10 people will strive to improve their financial well-being in 2015. Changing your financial habits is a resolution you cannot afford to overlook. It’s time to flex your financial muscle. The experts at the nonprofit National Endowment for Financial Education offer these seven tips to help make your financial resolutions stick: 1) Do it now. Many will wait until they feel the time is right to begin new behaviors. If you wait until after the big party to start watching your diet, or until after that big purchase to start saving money, the ideal time will never present itself. 2) Write down your financial resolutions. The NEFE survey finds setting a budget, making a plan to get out of debt, and boosting retirement savings are the top priorities for Americans in the coming year. Clearly articulate why you think your resolution is a good idea, steps you can take to reach your goal, and what you hope to gain. Post your list where you will see it each day. 3) Identify your money morals. Understanding your values and attitudes

Happy 50 th Birthday to our Allstar! The years have passed by but you’re still one helluva guy. No more football helmet or baseball mitt No more long hair, But at least you still have good witt. You have always been your own man who avoided trends So may your future be blessed with good health, lots of family and friends.

From: Brent, Brad & Family, Dad and Carol, Tammy, Dylan, Brianna, Connor, the Murray Motor Family

about money will bring clarity to the decision-making process. NEFE offers various online tools, such as the LifeValues Quiz, which will help you identify your values and make resolutions based on those values. You can find the LifeValues Quiz at www.SmartAboutMoney.org. 4) Recruit a “financial buddy.” Share your resolutions with a trusted family member or friend who can provide support in helping you meet your financial goals. Find someone who will hold you accountable and will set a good example for you to follow. 5) Vary goal intensity. Give yourself a short-term objective such as paying more than the minimum on one credit card this month. A long-term goal could be setting up – and adding to – the emergency savings account you know you should have but didn’t get around to starting last year. 6) Monitor your progress regularly. If you are trying to reduce debt, make sure you check your balances often. Set aside a couple of hours each week to address your finances. Over time this will become second nature and part of your normal routine. 7) Address conflict logically. If you find yourself breaking a financial goal by reverting to old spending habits, identify what value might be causing you to stray and take the time to ask yourself if the decision is appropriate given your current financial situation. Williamsport’s Cuban Baseball Connection By Lou Hunsinger Jr.

T

he recent announcement of the possible normalization of relations between Cuba and the United States is opening up a host of possible economic opportunities but it may also be opening a baseball talent reservoir to Major League Baseball. Williamsport at one time played host to a good number of Cuban baseball players on the Williamsport Grays in 1944 and 1945. During those years the Grays were a farm club of the Washington Senators. During that era the Senators were owned by the penny=pinching, Clark Griffith. Griffith was also seeking to find baseball talent on the cheap. One of the ways that Griffith would do this was to try and find talent in Cuba, which had a rich baseball tradition and many fine players. They were players that could be had for much less than nativeborn American talent. Another major factor in Griffith’s interest in Cuban players was the manpower shortage caused by America’s involvement in World War II. Many of America’s best major league and minor league players were away in the armed services, leaving a major gap in player availability. Cuba was not subject to the more stringent draft regulations that were present in the United States, making many more young, baseball aged men available for use by someone such as Griffith. However, Griffith could only sign lighter skinned and mixed race

players instead of some of the outstanding black talent that was available on the island. The key talent scout or “ivory hunter” for Cuban baseball talent for Griffith was Joe Cambria, who ran a lucrative laundry business in Baltimore. He established an extensive scouting network that tapped the rich resources of Cuban baseball talent. Cambria eventually signed 78 Cuban ballplayers that would see action in the Washington Senators minor league organization, several of whom would play in the major leagues with Washington. It was Cambria who would recruit the Cuban talent that would play for Williamsport in 1944 and 1945. When the 1944 Williamsport Grays assembled for training to prepare for the season, 16 of the 23 players were Cuban. They were managed by veteran baseball hand, Ray Kolp, whose patience would be sorely tried by the Cubans in the next two seasons. The Cubans faced many new difficulties and challenges, in addition to trying to play winning baseball. They had to adjust to a new culture, new language, chilly early season weather, and the reaction of fans, both at home and on the road. For some reason, Grays’ management kept the Cubans isolated and segregated from their Anglo baseball brethren. They arranged for them to stay at the Haleeka Campground, north of Williamsport, at Cogan Station. An interpreter-trainer was assigned to them to help ease their adjustment to the area.

The player that most epitomized this was the Utica Blue Sox’ Cecil “Turkey” Tyson. Tyson started two major baseball riots in games on July 8 and 16, 1945. They were very ugly affairs, with Tyson openly brandishing his bat as a weapon against the Cubans. These riots and the accompanying bad blood badly shook up the Cuban players and their Anglo teammates. Scranton Tribune sportswriter Chic Feldman wrote, “It grieves me to report that some Eastern League players and even some managers went out of their way to abuse the Cuban kids.” He continued, “This blind hate may have been responsible for Williamsport’s failure to crash the first division in 1944. It would be a hard allegation to prove, yet there was talk in reliable circles that the other clubs “ganged up” on Williamsport. Yes, even reserved their best pitchers to toss at the once laughing Latins.” In 1944 the Cuban flavored Grays finished in fifth place in the Eastern League with a 64-75 record. In 1945 they plunged to the cellar with a 52-85 mark. This interesting but tumultuous chapter in Williamsport baseball history ended following the 1945 season. These Cuban players left an indelible memory on local fans, some older fans still recalling them with fondness. Several of these former Cuban Grays went on to distinguish themselves on the Havana Cubans 1947 Florida International League championship team, including, Frankie Gallardo, Hector Arago, Manuel Hidalgo, Francisco Quicotis, and Jose Zardon. Chino Hidalgo was inducted into the Cuban Baseball Hall of Fame in 1997.

It appears as though the Cubans conducted themselves well in public and were largely well-liked by those whom they interacted with locally. On the field, the Cuban-flavored Grays jumped off to a quick start in the first two months of both seasons they played here. But as the season wore on they began to slip in the standings. Fans across all the Eastern League cities had never seen anything like Williamsport’s Cubans. They played a wide-open, slick, speed oriented game and their Spanish chatter with each other proved a novelty during a less ethnically diverse time period. Sportswriters across the league quickly dubbed them the “Laughing Latins” and the Rhumba Rascals,” They lacked a legitimate power hitter so they would often have to manufacture runs through speed, bunting and advancing the runner, something that is referred today as “small ball.” Williamsport had an outstanding double play combination during these years in second baseman, Frankie Gallardo and shortstop, Miguel “Chino” Hidalgo. It was one of the best in Williamsport’s baseball history. They had a standout centerfielder in Jose Antonio “Tony” Zardon, who would eventually see action with the Washington Senators. The pitching staff was anchored by another Cuban, Danny Parra, who won 14 games in 1944 and 16 games in 1945. The ugly part of Williamport’s Cuban baseball years was the racial taunts and open bigorty that the Cubans had endure on the road at opposing ballparks as well as hostility from some players within the league.

In particular, the vitamin C content of frozen corn, green beans and blueberries was significantly higher than their freshstored counterparts.” Tips to boost nutrient intake For those looking to reap the nutritional benefits found in frozen foods, the Frozen Food Foundation offers these tips: Blend easy treats. Perfect for a quick, on-the-go breakfast or a sweet anytime treat, just add frozen fruit and your other favorite ingredients in the blender for a yummy smoothie. Prepare quick sides. Add color and flavor to lunch and dinner entrees by stocking your freezer with frozen vegetables. Frozen vegetables come peeled, pre-cut and ready to cook or eat. No washing or cutting is required, which saves time and reduces waste. Make the sensible choice. The portioncontrolled packaging of many frozen entrées and sides make them the allaround clear choice for consumers seeking well-balanced nutritious meals for themselves and their families. Freezing is simply nature’s pause button. Frozen fruits and vegetables are picked and frozen at their peak ripeness, locking in the nutrient value at the point of freezing. Today’s families don’t need to sacrifice health to have a quick meal with quality ingredients. For more tips and tricks to enhance your family’s diet, visit www.frozenfoodfacts.org.

esearch from the Journal of Nutrition found that nearly 80 percent of Americans do not consume the recommended amounts of fruit, and nearly 90 percent do not eat the recommended amount of vegetables. While a variety of factors may contribute to this low consumption, including cost and convenience, a recent study revealed one easy solution: frozen fruits and vegetables. Fresh versus frozen The University of California-Davis (UC Davis), in partnership with the Frozen Food Foundation, conducted an in-depth study to evaluate the nutrient content of eight commonly-purchased frozen and fresh fruits and vegetables: blueberries, strawberries, carrots, corn, broccoli, green beans, green peas and spinach. The research was designed to eliminate discrepancies in the harvesting, handling and storage of fruits and vegetables used in the analysis. Like produce found in farmers’ markets, the fruits and vegetables used in the study were locally grown, harvested and stored by the UC Davis research team. “The study was designed to mimic the quality of produce found at farmers’ markets or grown in consumers’ backyards,” said UC Davis Lead Researcher Dr. Diane Barrett. “The study revealed that frozen produce is nutritionally equivalent, and often superior, to its fresh-stored counterpart.

Bradley Cooper. According to the survey, when asked which celebrity women most want to have as their New Year’s kiss, Bradley tops the list, while the guys would go for Kate. If you want to serve your guests a signature drink while they enjoy the movie, try the Barefoot Bubbly New Year’s Rock. Game on Looking for a fun game to play? Have everyone write down a pop culture event or relevant celebrity from 2014 on a sticky note (for example, Pharrell’s crazy hat, Taylor Swift, Ellen’s award show selfie, the 2014 Sochi Olympics, George Clooney getting married), and give it to the person to your left without revealing what is written, and stick it to their forehead. The person will ask yes or no questions and attempt to guess what is written on the note. With a few friends, yummy cocktails and fun games, you’ll have a memorable New Year’s celebration. Pink In the New Year • 1/2 ounce apricot brandy • 1/2 ounce lemon juice • 1/2 ounce simple syrup • 3 ounces Barefoot Bubbly Pink Moscato • Mint sprig or lemon twist garnish Place apricot brandy, lemon juice and simple syrup in cocktail shaker with ice. Shake until chilled. Strain into chilled champagne flute. Top with Barefoot Bubbly Pink Moscato. Garnish with mint sprig or lemon twist. (Family Features)

Reviving gave him answers. But he had to die again and again and you won’t be able to put this book down until you know what happens. They say we all have a doppelganger, and “Recognition” by O.H. Bennett is based on that idea: on a rainy night, as a young widow heads home to pick up her son, she sees a beggar who is her late husband’s double. Many years ago, he went missing and was presumed drowned – but did he? You’ll wonder, too... And finally, a tie: “A Wanted Woman” by Eric Jerome Dickey and “I Am Pilgrim” by Terry Hayes are both thrillers; I couldn’t decide which I liked better. Be aware that the Dickey book leans toward violence and profanity, while the Hayes book is more espionagelike. Both kept me on the edge of my seat for days… And then there are my NONFICTION PICKS… “The Baby Boom” by P.J. O’Rourke will bring back memories for anyone born between 1947 and 1964. O’Rourke recalls the usual things that Boomers

will remember – playing outside til dark, getting that first Color TV – but the real appeal comes when he finds something you’ve long-forgotten, and he expounds upon it. This book is like time-travelling to your childhood. Lovers of the Old (or new) West will love “Badluck Way” by Bryce Andrews, the story of cowboying, ranch life, and the end of both. It’s also a tale of conservation: wolves were a big problem on the ranch where Andrews worked, and they cost his employer a good amount of money. But where’s the happy medium between raising cattle and being a steward to the land and its wildlife? This book doesn’t have all the answers, but it’ll make you think. I’m normally not a big fan of biographies that include “recreations,” but “Death of a King” by Tavis Smiley was a great exception. In this book, Smiley envisions the last year of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.: his friendships, his dilemmas, the heartbreak he knew and caused, the work he did, and that which he might’ve wished he didn’t do. I liked this book because it’s thoughtful, and because it makes Dr. King into an ordinary man. Smiley makes King approachable. If you’ve read other Best Of lists this year, you’ve probably found “Being Mortal” by Atul Gawande there – and

for good reason. It’s about the end-oflife, aging, and how medicine perceives both. Gawande urges readers to take charge of the end of their lives. That’s powerful stuff, in a powerful book. And lastly, another tie: “The Removers” by Andrew Meredith, “Smoke Gets In Your Eyes” by Caitlin Doughty, and “The Skeleton Crew” by Deborah Halber all deal with bodies. Dead ones. The Meredith book is a fatherson memoir in a coming-of-age way; the Doughty book is a memoir about her years working in a crematory; and the Halber book is about how everyday people spend their time comparing missing persons lists with online lists of unclaimed bodies. I liked ‘em all. I couldn’t decide … And then my Best of CHILDREN’S BOOKS: For the littlest kid, “Don’t Push the Button” by Bill Cotter is a nearguaranteed gigglefest. There’s a monster inside this book, and a red button. Whatever you do, well, read the book with your favorite 3-to-6-year-old and see. Post-apocalyptic novels have been done to death, but “H2O” by Virginia Bergin really struck me as unusual. The premise of this book is that planetary dust has caused contaminated rain. Anybody who gets wet dies – bloody, painfully, and

of his mother, who tackles the justice system, the law, and everything she never thought she’d have to deal with on behalf of her son. Timely and sobering, this is another one of those books you just can’t put down. And finally, “Skink No Surrender” by Carl Hiaasen is a great way to introduce your teen to the humor of this adult author. In this book, a teen goes missing and it’s up to her cousin and a Vietnamveteran-former-mayor-possibly-insaneconservation-minded madman to find her. What’s not to like, hm? And there you are: fifteen books you just can’t miss. The Best of the Year. Happy Reading!

fast. That includes the heroine’s parents, sibling, friends, neighbors, and everyone she loves. Or maybe not, because there’s a wicked cliffhanger here and I loved it. I also liked “Noggin” by John Corey Whaley, a disturbingly plausible book about a young man who’s suffering a terminal illness. His only hope is to have his head cryonically frozen, and to wait for a donor body. But can everybody in his life wait for him to return? As I read “Endangered” by Jean Love Cush, I wasn’t sure whether or not it was an adult book or a teen read. I decided it was both: it’s the story of a young teen who gets arrested for a murder he didn’t commit, but it’s also the story

The Roving Sportsman It’s That Time of Year! By Jon Pries

W

inter is officially underway, the Christmas Holiday Season parties and gatherings are in full swing and it is – once again – time to make a few hopeful New Year’s resolutions………… We can safely assume that “losing weight and getting in better shape” is somewhere on the list, as is “saving more money” toward whatever the goal may be. Hopefully this year we will finally take the list more seriously and truly focus on the aspirations we set for ourselves. So, beyond the usual

hopes for changing things for the better in our lives, what should we as sportsmen consider adding to our list of New Year’s resolutions? Vow to be a joiner and supporter – As we turn the page on the calendar and the new year begins, this is the perfect time to join one (or more) of the conservation groups that do so much to ensure our hunting heritage and work to restore and preserve various game and bird species. By merely joining, you increase the membership numbers, which is an important factor when it comes to the organization’s efforts in lobbying for their causes. Most of the active conservation groups hold banquets and fundraising events

throughout the year and are always looking for input and new ideas to improve their events. Contributing to these activities allows you to make new friends with similar interests, gain a great feeling of satisfaction knowing that you have helped in some way to improve the organization and have taken time to pay back for all the enjoyment you have experienced in the outdoors – made possible by many of these conservation groups. Your efforts will aid in preserving not only wildlife for future generations, but our very hunting heritage will be secured through your participation. Consider becoming active in organizations such as the National Rifle Association, the National Wild Turkey Federation, Ducks Unlimited, Quality Deer Management Association, Trout Unlimited, or the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation. They are all outstanding leaders in the ongoing task of conservation work and have local chapters which hold local events throughout the year. Review their mission statements, pick one or two that strive to better the things you believe in, then join and participate! Resolve to improve your skills – Most outdoorsmen are always striving to be better at what they do. Over the coming months, take time to perfect your shooting skills, concealed carry techniques and safe firearm handling procedures by taking a class or instructions at an indoor shooting range, such as Tripoli’s Triggers, at 531 Washington Boulevard, Williamsport. You can reach them at (570) 326-4181 to set up an appointment. Mark your calendar now for a few days in the spring, once the weather breaks, to travel north on Route 87 to the Consolidated Sportsman’s property, where

rifle, pistol, shotgun and archery shooting are all available. The folks who are members there are a cordial group, and are usually eager to share their expertise to anyone who is interested in becoming a better shot or who is interested in learning about the sport for the first time. Pledge to introduce one youth and one adult to the outdoors – One of the most rewarding experiences you will ever encounter is introducing someone to the outdoor sports that you have enjoyed. It was just over 10 years ago that the Pennsylvania Game Commission introduced the Mentored Youth Hunting Program, becoming the first state in the nation to offer such an opportunity to mentored youths. For the past decade, thousands of young people have been turned on to the joy of hunting and spending quality time outdoors, helping to insure the future of our sport. An adult mentoring program is being developed to allow adults to be accompanied by mentors in an effort to introduce them to the sport as well. As these new adult sportsmen become exposed to and enthusiastic about hunting and the outdoors, they add to another important group – they are educated voters, who can support beneficial legislative issues and thus help preserve the hunting heritage for everyone. Vowing to join a conservation organization, resolving to improve your skills and pledging to introduce someone to our sport are just three simple and enjoyable ways to add to your resolutions for the New Year. By keeping these resolutions, you not only become a better sportsman yourself, but you enrich and strengthen our hunting heritage for everyone – including generations to come!

dreams are of distant haunts. To realize any of these aspirations one must be realistic. Separate the list into trips based on distance and logisticsclose by, mid-range, and long-range. Limitations like time and money always enter the equation. You may opt for two or three (or more) less-expensive trips rather than one of the once-in-a-lifetime adventures. The optimum time for many of these fishing venues revolves around the calendar. Another option for the “want-to” list is salt water. Good saltwater fishing is not that far removed, but does involve a little research and planning. Specific species are best pursued at certain times of the year. It may be your interest to stand on the beach and surf cast to breaking bluefish or stripers, or head offshore for tuna and other species. How about catching a shark? It is all great adventure and comes highly recommended. Winter is a time for reflection, but also a time of hope for those waters yet to be discovered. When that day of departure finally arrives, you’ll be thankful for the winter of anticipation. Often the journey is the most rewarding part. I wish all of you a wonderful 2015. May your outings be blessed: the right fly, lure, or bait always chosen, a line that never breaks, and the “big ones’ never escape. Hope to see you on the water.

27 • Webb Weekly December 31, 2014

Agendas can be extended to new fishing venues. Perhaps there is one that has been swimming around in your head that you have yet to act upon. Possibly it is time to experience a different trout stream, or one of the stocked lakes. It may be that you’ve never float-fished the West Branch Susquehanna River for smallmouth bass. Conveniently spaced launch ramps make for enjoyable oneday trips. Maybe you have learned about a certain lake and the excellent largemouth bass fishing found there. There is joy in discovery. Another possible addition to the “must-do” list is attempting a new fishing technique or style. It may be one you have read or heard about that piques your interest. Examples include fly fishing, plastic tubes, live minnows, night fishing, switch rods for fly fishing, casting rod/reel, Czech nymphing, etc. By following through you will not only find enjoyment, but will become a more complete fisherman, as well. Fishing for a different species might be an ambition. Within fairly close proximity to Williamsport any number of fish can be pursued. Even some not typically considered like striped bass, hybrid stripers, flathead catfish, or northern pike. The “want-to” list is a bit more complicated. It is here that desirable fishing destinations will be listed. Anglers are dreamers. Often those

his year’s fourday bear season was hampered by some nasty weather, but it may still end up in the top ten with a total thus far of 2,444 (archery season, limited early season and extended season results are not in yet) bears killed. Even though the numbers may be down a bit from some of the recent bear seasons there is still a healthy population of bears roaming the Pennsylvania countryside. Recent estimates place their numbers at around 18,000 bears; and from what I’m seeing and hearing from fellow outdoorsmen, I have no reason to doubt that. This past rifle deer season, thanks to snow cover much of the season, on two different occasions I spotted relatively fresh bear tracks

while buck hunting; one afternoon a few days into rifle deer season I crossed bear tracks indicating two bears had recently passed through the area. On the last day of rifle deer season my wife and I came across Ken a fresh set of tracks while Hunter hunting state game lands. With the abundance of acorns in a lot of places it appears that many bears are in no hurry to den up for the winter hence more sightings during the deer season. In spite of their abundance, however, bad weather no doubt kept the bear kill down from some of the record high numbers of past seasons. An ice storm in the northern part of the state on opening day kept many hunters from getting to their favorite hunting spots and a snow storm on the fourth day probably

Still leading the pack is Lycoming County with 208 bears followed by Tioga County with 193, then Clinton with 149. Potter County had 107 bears, Warren County tallied 93, Centre County came in with 88 and McKean County took 85 bruins. As you can see Northcentral Pennsylvania leads the state in the number of bears taken. The northeast generally reports some high counts but this year that part of the state was down; Pike County killed 79 bears ranking it at number nine this year but at the other end of the state Warren County reported 93 bears ranking it number five. As always some large bears were taken with the largest having an estimated weight of 677 pounds taken in Warren County and another bear at 623 pounds was killed in Union County. At least six others in the 500-600 pound range were taken. It’s often been said, if you want to kill a big black bear hunt in Pennsylvania.

contributed as well to the lower count. In addition to the weather problems, the fact that the acorn crop was good in much of the state probably caused bears to be more spread out rather than concentrated in smaller locations where there was an abundant food source. All of the numbers aren’t in yet for the various bear seasons but on opening day of the four day bear season hunters bagged 1,623 bears, on day two 417 were taken, 304 on day three and 100 on the final day. The 100 total on day four represents the lowest total on the final day since the fourth day was added in 2011 but bear in mind that weather and poor visibility were major reasons for the lower numbers. Just to give you some idea of where we stand this year here are the last five years totals: 2013-3,510, 20123,632, 2011-4,350, 2010-3,009 and 2009 the total was 3,512 with an average of 3,603 over the last five years.

the students they serve, should not be forced to compete against private/charter schools free to recruit their athletes from wherever they wish for state tournament titles. It has nothing to do with a student’s right to go to the school of his/her choice. For the sake of a level playing field those schools that enjoy the recruiting advantage should be competing in a division of their own. • A collective cooperative understanding among high school coaches of all sports that the particular sport he or she coaches is not the only sports program in their respective school. Since the PIAA ran away from their ‘unenforceable’ restrictions governing out-of-season practice times all too many coaches have made ‘their’ sport a year-round program. As a result high school athletes, who could be participating in other sports and might like to do so, must choose between being a multi-sport athlete and concentrating their efforts on one particular sport. Consequently both the athlete and the other sports miss out on positive experiences. Oh, forget it. Those items will be harder to achieve than getting the police officer’s signature. Whatever you may choose to do to welcome in 2015 may you go about it safe and sane. Whether you be a player, parent, coach, fan or official let’s keep the proper perspective of what high school athletics are all about. Few receive college scholarships, even fewer will turn pro but all of them are playing for their enjoyment of the game.

These were the days of Polaroid cameras and one team was ingenious enough to bring back picture evidence of their success. Rather than just obtaining the signature of the City Hall officer, they returned with a signed picture of their team with the backdrop of the gendarme’s lineup board behind them! It was a scavenger hunt we have not forgotten. Perhaps this New Year’s Eve a similar scavenger hunt idea should be brought back with a related sports theme for consideration. Let’s see, what ingenious items might make up those sought after lists. How about: • A cooperative, financially workable agreement between the City, the Williamsport Crosscutters, their sponsors and the team’s new ownership to insure long-term stability for the Minor League team at Bowman Field. • An end to the NCAA over-zealous restrictions imposed against innocent Penn State student- athletes in the wake of the Sandusky scandal. Enough already. The man’s in jail, the victims can’t be unhurt and Joe Pa and his statue are long gone. And by the way, all those victories the Lords of the college game scratched from the records books still did happen. • A realization by the PIAA governing Board that their state playoff system for team sports is about as fair at the slot machines in Vegas. Public school teams, restricted by boundaries for

What a great local season under the Friday night lights. This doesn’t just happen without a tremendous amount of planning, hard work and love of their players by our area football coaches. Great job to all and thank you for doing so much for so little. Average pay of an assistant football coach, if they take pay, is probably about $.50 an hour. Obviously we have a tremendous amount of talent, currently in our neck of Penn’s Woods. Our area athletes are putting in hard work and extra time to turn this potential into results and are to be recognized for it. A tip of the cap to the Sun Gazette sports team, led by Ben Brigandi.
