Iwant to thank my staff for filling in during my absence at the end of last week and making sure not only the Webb Weekly got done but the Home Show was covered. They are amazing, and truly family.

The Home Show is an event we look forward to; thank you to everybody who stopped by our Webb Weekly booth. For those who were looking to see me, I am sorry I missed you. From what I have heard, the event was a success, and the Liberty Arena provided a great new home.

I guess this is a good point to congratulate Lonnie Roedts, the winner of our Home Show grill package. His wife encouraged him to enter, and both were kind enough to have the grill delivered to their daughter. Again, something I usually enjoy doing but couldn’t, shout out to my right-hand man, Charlie Gizenski, for taking care of this.

A tip of my cap to Elery Nau in Montoursville for partnering up each year to provide and assemble the grill. My good friend Mikey Rupert at Rupert’s Specialty Meats for providing a gift card for his great grillin’ products and sides. And last but definitely not least, my

friend old Chet Ruth at Frosty Beverage. Not to be confused with young Chet Ruth, both are good friends. Frosty’s provides the ice-cold beverages to wash down that first picnic of the season.

If you didn’t win, you will get another chance real soon as our Great American Summer Cook-Out giveaway is just around the corner, with the same cast of characters providing the same great prizes.

If you didn’t make it to the Home Show, we have plenty of Webb Weekly yardsticks remaining. You’re more than welcome to stop by our office and pick one up. I’m sure Jaimie will greet you with a couple of handfuls of candy left over from the event.

Moving right along, I would just like to thank everybody for their thoughts, prayers, and caring as I had a little scare last week. I received amazing medical care from all involved; thank you from me and my family! I am very blessed.

For those of you wondering, I am doing just fine, so please don’t worry about me. I will have more about what I went through another week; I am still trying to wrap my mind around everything. I do want to share this immediately

to maybe help somebody avoid something that I could have probably prevented. Please take a little advice: If you’re not feeling well and it is something out of the ordinary, seek immediate medical attention. This can also be said for a simple health issue that lasts longer than it should. Toughing it out, not finding out why, or the denial approach that it will be just fine, it will pass, isn’t the answer. I learned this firsthand.

Happy Mother’s Day, and a sincere thank you to all that provide a mother’s love. I think it goes without saying the world is definitely in need of more motherly love, care, and compassion. And those that provide it have never been more in demand.

Please celebrate motherhood and thank all the moms and those who provide this maternal love. If you have little ones in your life, make sure they make her that special card, pick out a flower, or even make a little something. No matter what it is, she will love it.

A great idea for all you men out there is to give mom a break from her normal motherly chores. A day with no cooking, cleaning, or laundry. You chase the kids around as she has a little time to herself. This doesn’t exempt you from giving the

lady who brought your children into the world a special card, gift, or meal out. I suggest a combination of all of the above. Remember, if mom’s happy, everyone’s happy.

Make sure you remember the grandmothers who seem to be taking an even more active role in raising today’s children. Again, they will appreciate whatever the child gives them, but it is equally important for the father to thank them and appreciate the motherly duties they have accepted out of love.

Please remind the older kids, no matter their age, not to forget their mom or nanny. Just in case, for whatever reason, that it may have slipped their mind. Then keep this quiet between you and them; I’ve learned my lesson on this one.

Most importantly, make sure those special words, I love you and thank you for everything you do, are spoken accompanied by a hug. I encourage you to say this every day, not just on Mother’s Day.

Happy Mother’s Day to my Mom, Elaine, in Texas, my stepmother, Carol, and my mother-in-law, Theresa. Thank you for everything you do and for being wonderful grandmothers.

And a happy Mother’s Day to Michelle from Jimmy, Hunter, Finn, Leia, Buck and me. We love you.

Let’s all be safe out there and enjoy a happy Mother’s Day weekend. God Bless America.

L.L. Camp Season to Open June 23

Compiled by Lou Hunsinger Jr.

Little League Baseball Inc. is expecting another banner season for the summer camp program which runs from June 23 to August 16.

Officials at L.L.B. headquarters in South Williamsport expect a full capacity for about 500 boys for the 4 regular two-week sessions. The new Green Acres campsite at Hillsgrove in Sullivan County will be open for a similar period and can accommodate 35 boys.

Little League will also be operating a camp at St. Petersburg, Florida this summer.

Another development has seen the addition of Hal Schumacher, former pitching star of the old New York Giants to the L.L.B. staff.

Schumacher spent 13 seasons with the Giants during the 1930s and 40s, was mainstay of the Giants participating

in three World Series and one All-Star Game.

He will serve along with Summer Camp regular, Joe Bedenk, Penn State baseball coach, as a guest instructor. Schools for managers and umpires are planned again for this year. Umpire enrollment is reported at near capacity. Four L.L. diamonds and two senior division fields will be available to campers.

Most if not all of the 1967 camp staffers will be back this season. The staff includes “Whitey” Piurek, athletic director at West Haven, Conn. High School, and a scout for several major league teams, Arthur Crouse, Purek’s assistant at West Haven, former Williamsport Grays’ pitcher, Jack Sanford and three Williamsport High School staffers, Stanley Skuta, Rupert Morgan, Eugene “Chick” Springman, and former standout Williamsport athlete and former Boston Brave, Don Manno.

FCFP Announces Improvement Project At Rider Park

The First Community Foundation Partnership of Pennsylvania (FCFP) is pleased to announce more than $500,000 in improvements will soon be made at Rider Park.

In 2021, FCFP received a Community Conservation Partnerships Program grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR). Additional funds from Lycoming County Act 13 Legacy Funds and private donors will help to make this project a reality.

Officer, Steve Simms. “We are thankful to our partners at DCNR, the Lycoming County Commissioners, and to our donors for allowing this vision to become a reality.”

Park improvements will begin in early summer and take roughly six weeks to complete. Limited Park closures are anticipated and will be posted on FCFP’s social media and website.

Improvements will include an expanded parking area, one-way traffic loop to accommodate large vehicles, picnic pavilion, rain gardens and an upgraded information kiosk. A new park entrance with stone pillars will greet visitors.

“We are extremely excited to finally see this project come to fruition. These improvements honor the legacy of Thomas Rider to provide Lycoming County residents opportunities to connect with nature through reflection, recreation, and education. This project is part of FCFP’s long term vision to enhance the Rider Park experience.” says FCFP Chief Financial

According to the DCNR website, “DCNR is committed to expanding recreational opportunities and outdoor recreation infrastructure in Pennsylvania.” Secretary of DCNR, Cindy Adams Dunn, said “the Department is committed to building community conservation partnerships with local governments and nonprofit organizations to protect critical natural areas and open space, develop greenways and trails, provide quality park, recreation and conservation opportunities, and to improve the quality of life in Pennsylvania’s communities.”

Owned and operated by FCFP, the park is private land made available for public enjoyment. Rider Park was a gift from the late Thomas J. Rider, who wanted to share his love of outdoor recreation with the community. The park is a fitting tribute to a man who balanced work with volunteerism and recreation. Located in Lycoming County, north of Williamsport, PA, the park offers 10 miles of beautiful trails leading through woodland and meadows. Visitors are welcome to hike, trail run, mountain bike, and cross-country ski, among other low-impact activities. For directions, visit www.RiderPark.org.

Peripheral neuropathy is a result of damage to the nerves often causing weakness, pain, numbness, tingling, and the most debilitating balance problems. is damage is commonly caused by a lack of blood ow to the nerves in the hands and feet which causes the nerves to begin to degenerate due to the lack of nutrient ow.

As you can see in Figure 1, as the blood vessels that surround the nerves become diseased they shrivel up which causes the nerves to not get the nutrients to continue to survive. When these nerves begin to “die”

This Week’s LION: Fire Chief Todd Winder

This is the third article in recognizing people who I believe have impacted our community and are great role models.

PTodd greatly admired both his father and grandfather and became a junior fireman at age 14 in 1984.

ennsylvania has a great heritage of volunteer firefighters. Benjamin Franklin himself founded the first non-profit, volunteer fire company, the Union Fire Company, in Philadelphia in 1736. This tradition continued for centuries; by the 1970s, there were over 300,000 volunteer firefighters in Keystone State.

But, since that time, the numbers have steadily been going lower and lower. Today, there are roughly 37,000 volunteer firefighters in our state. What makes the situation even more dire is that volunteer fire companies have a much higher call volume and dangers that those fifty-plus years ago could not have imagined.

Many of those who are still around because of a heritage behind them. One of those in our region is the Fire Chief for the Clinton Township Volunteer Fire Company (CTVFC), Todd Winder. His grandfather, George Emerson Winder, was one of the fire company’s charter members when it started in 1946. His father, Wilbur (Butch) Winder, was an active firefighter with CTVFC for 30 years.

When he first joined the company back in the 1980s, it was a real mano-a-mano environment. Some of Todd’s mentors were forty years his senior. It was more on-the-job training in those days and was taken very seriously. Mistakes were treated in a way that they would never happen again. Living around the fire company, the seniors would continually teach Todd and the other juniors the ropes, even how to run pumps and drive the trucks (but not to a real fire). Todd did anything and everything that the company required, and through it all knew this was a lifecalling.

Through the next fifteen years, Todd Winder continued to learn through official training courses and gained the respect of the other members. By 1999, he had accumulated the hundreds of hours necessary for the top job. In January of that year, the members of the CTVFC voted Todd Winder to become their Fire Chief. And every year since then, he has been voted into that position again — with 2024 being his silver jubilee — his 25th year as Fire Chief for the CTVFC. It is not an honorary position but a

they cause you to have balance problems, pain, numbness, tingling, burning, and many additional symptoms.

Treatment at Twin Hills can include light therapy. The low level light therapy is like watering a plant. The light therapy will allow the blood vessels to grow back around the peripheral nerves and provide them with the proper nutrients to heal and repair. It’s like adding water to a plant and seeing the roots grow deeper and deeper.

hard-working one. The Clinton Township Volunteer Fire Company is responsible for emergencies in an area covering 99.4 square miles, an area that does not just have homes and farms but also churches, stores, heavy industries, a public school, a state women’s prison, a county landfill, a railroad line, a major section of state highway, a large section of state forest, seventeen miles of the Susquehanna River, a private airport, a municipal golf course, a natural gas electrical plant, natural gas and petroleum pipelines, an Amish community and even a drive-in theater!

Todd Winder must supervise the company’s response to every possible emergency imaginable: house fires, farm fires, industrial fires, forest fires, landfill fires, road accidents, water rescues, railroad accidents, water recoveries, and much more.

Todd had to go through hundreds and hundreds of hours of training to know the right way to respond to these events, but he also had to supervise the training that the members needed to function effectively as a team in these events. Even the care and equipping of the various vehicles — the rescue truck, aerial truck, brush truck, water truck, etc., require continual focus, which the chief must oversee.

The CTVFC also has a very active EMT unit with two ambulances on duty 24/7 and an unbelievable call volume. For

40 hours a week, Monday-Friday, 9-5, the EMTs are paid, but for the other 104 hours of the week, the company responds with EMTs that volunteer, just like firefighters. The combination of EMT calls and fire calls has averaged over 700 emergencies a year in Clinton Township for the last five years, and this year’s call volume has been so high that it may hit 800. (This is an average of at least two calls every day of the year!) Todd Winder has over 400 responses in the past year, and in his volunteer work as an EMT, he has averaged 167 calls a year for the past ten years!

I have watched Todd in action for the past eight years as a Clinton Township Volunteer Fire Company member. I also saw him respond to emergencies at my home for my mother-in-law, father-inlaw, brother-in-law, sister-in-law, and yes, even myself on one occasion. I am extremely grateful for his commitment and professionalism.

Yes, it is true; he would never be mistaken for a diplomat. Todd gets very annoyed by those who make decisions or even express opinions that he knows are not helpful, practical, or downright faulty. But I give this man a wide berth in light of his tremendous commitment to our community. I know there are people alive today who could very well not be alive were it not for Todd Winder.

Sunscreen For All

t seems that summer, or at least summer weather, has arrived! And with summer comes sunscreen, even on cloudy days. On a surface level, all sunscreens have the same task: To minimize skin’s exposure to sunlight and, in doing so, reduce the signs of skin damage and lower the risk of skin cancer.

However, not all sunscreens are created, or should I say formulated, equally.

In general, there are two types: chemical and physical.

Bernadette Ulsamer

For chemical formulas, the skin absorbs the rays, and then the sunscreen converts that UV into heat and then releases the heat.

Physical sunscreens use minerals like zinc oxide and titanium dioxide to shield skin from UV rays, creating a protective coating on the skin.

Whether chemical or physical, good sunscreens now sidestep the biggest drawbacks from the sunscreens of times past, like ghostly-white nishes and oputting scents.

Here’s a rundown of some factors to consider when shopping for sunscreen this season.

First up, everyone should wear sunscreen, hands down. Speaking of which, don’t forget to apply some on the back of your hands.

According to the American Academy of Dermatology, the minimum number of broadspectrum is SPF 30. Sun Protection Factor (SPF) refers to the amount of UV radiation it takes to produce a sunburn when wearing that particular sunscreen, in comparison to how much UV exposure it takes for unprotected skin to get burned. So, SPF 30 theoretically allows you to stay in the sun 30 times longer without burning than you could without sunscreen. But generally, SPF 30 blocks about 97% of the sun’s rays, while SPF 50 can bump that up to about 98%. No level of SPF provides 100% protection, but diligent use of SPF 30-50 should keep your skin healthy and youthful looking.

Next up, texture. is is a matter of both personal preference and skin type. If you have acne-prone skin, you may want to avoid creamy or oily textures and instead seek out gels and powders like Nivea’s Sun Protection Water Gel SPF 50.

Dryer skin will bene t from thicker sunscreens like Aveeno’s Protect + Hydrate sunscreen lotion SPF 60.

And you’ll also want to be mindful of your outdoor plans. Obviously, waterproof products for swimming or using a sunscreen stick like CeraVe’s Mineral Sunscreen Stick

SPF 50, with zinc oxide on the face to avoid stinging in the eyes from forehead sweat. If you are in the woods, you’ll want to avail yourself of a sunscreen/bug-repellent combo. For applying sun protection over makeup, use a mineral-based SPF powder. With all of these considerations, you may be able to guess that I’d recommend di erent sunscreens for di erent activities and members of your household.

On weekdays, I use Supergoop’s Glowscreen (SPF 40) as a foundation and nish o my makeup with Mineral’s sunscreen setting powder (SPF 35). For the body, I spray drugstore brand clear spray or Coola’s Organic Sunscreen SPF 50, fragrance-free

spray. For the kids, one of whom su ers from eczema, we use Babyganics 50 SPF Sunscreen Spray. I like a spray application for kids because it’s quicker than lotion, and you can hit them when they are literally running out the door.

For weekends with upcoming camping and hiking, we’ll pull out our heavy-hitter sunscreens like Bullfrog Mosquito’s Coast Bug Spray and Sunscreen SPF 50 for double duty of sun protection and insect repellent. For pool days, the whole family likes Coppertone SPORT Sunscreen SPF 50, which is resistant to water (for about 80 minutes), sweat, and heat. I also like to layer on Sun Bum’s SPF 30 Sunscreen Scalp and

Hair Mist.

It can be hard to gauge with sprays how much to use, but ideally, you’d apply an ounce of sunscreen to your whole body, which is equivalent to the size of a golf ball or shot glass. Typically, most people do not apply enough sunscreen, nor do they apply it throughout the day. e standard advice is to reapply every two hours while outdoors or immediately a er swimming. Even if sunscreen is water-resistant, that doesn’t mean it’s waterproof, so reapplication is necessary.

When it comes to chemical versus physical or mineral sunscreen, the main factor I consider, besides the level of protection, is how else it can a ect the skin. Chemical sunscreens can cause redness and irritation

for sensitive skin. Mineral sunscreens can be di cult to blend and are less resistant to water. So, I end up with a mix of sunscreens for a mix of uses.

Mineral sunscreen for the face, chemical for arms and legs, SPF ChapStick, and a mist for the scalp and hair.

You may nd a big tub of sunscreen works for everyone in your household, or each person may have their individualized sunscreen options. For any sunscreen scenario, it’s important to wear it every day, especially during the spring and summer.

Other ways to protect against the sun are by wearing hats, re ective clothing, and sunglasses. And don’t forget to dab sunscreen on the backs of hands, tops of feet, and ridges of ears.

she just quit being in the kitchen altogether. Momma always had something baked each week. A er multiple surgeries, she started cooking and baking again. We knew Momma was back!

All she cared about was her getting better for my surgery so that she could take care of me.

She spoiled us with meals, o ered to take me to follow-up doctor appointments, and called me every single day to check on me. She still wasn’t feeling one hundred percent, but she was still there for me when I needed her because that’s the kind of mother she is. I don’t care what age you are; you always need your Momma. e nurse in her always made her very nurturing. Boo-boos got taken care of, and

when you were sick, she was right there. Now, as for having patience mehhhhhhh, that wasn’t her strongest forte, and she would be the rst to admit it. Homework could get pretty challenging, but that could partially be because my brother and I could possibly, maybe, have been a pain in the rear getting us to do it.

Her patience ran short, though, dealing with parents at her job who didn’t care about their kids. It was so sad. I won’t say what she did and the things she dealt with, but it’s no wonder she had no patience when she got home from work. It made me appreciate the mother I had at a very young age.

If you have a wonderful momma who has

Woody Makes His 50th Without the Buzz

Writer-director Woody Allen recently notched his 50th film — but this Woody has no buzz … not even for such an impressive milestone.

The once-beloved auteur behind such landmarks as Annie Hall, Manhattan, Sleeper, and (my favorite) Crimes and Misdemeanors, Allen holds a record 16 Oscar noms for screenwriting. But he’s now essentially been canceled, and almost no one wants to work with him anymore.

The furor stems from ugly accusations for which he was never formally charged, prosecuted or convicted — despite many months of careful investigation. But since this article is actually a review of Allen’s absorbing and accomplished new thriller Coup de Chance (which is indeed his 50th film), I won’t go into the case any further; I merely wanted to explain why the movie has a cast of unknowns, was made overseas and is entirely in French (with subtitles, of course).

Happily, after several Allen duds over the past decade, critics agree this is a

strong return to form for the fallen giant. It should certainly interest his many still-stalwart fans — of which your Webb critic is certainly one. Allen’s amazing filmography ranges from light-hearted comedies to sharp-edged thrillers — with a few splendid titles combining both (Scoop, Crimes and Misdemeanors, Manhattan Murder Mystery). In either genre, most of his work advances a firm existential viewpoint, with much depending on random chance — while the good things in life (such as love, music and art) go a long way toward brightening a brutal, broken world.

Now readily available for streaming, Coup de Chance falls firmly into the thriller category. With a title that translates to “Stroke of Luck,” it focuses on a young Parisian wife and her affair with an old high-school chum much younger and more sensitive than her wealthy, selfish husband. Since Allen’s career seems to emphasize comedy and existentialism, it’s easy to forget what a fine storyteller he is — and

Coup is a solid reminder of that, especially in its final half-hour.

The acting is terrific, and the story gains momentum from our strong feelings for or against Allen’s characters. His denouement, meanwhile, takes a totally unexpected left turn; it may feel unsatisfying to thriller-fans expecting him to tie it all together in a tidy package — but it’s certainly consistent with the “stroke of luck” worldview so clearly established in the film’s first hour. And in any case, the ending will not shock those who recall the ring-scene in Allen’s lauded 2005 movie Match Point.

be expected to have his actresses take their clothes off as frequently as possible; in his heyday, he certainly had the directorial power to demand that — like so many other gaze-happy Hollywood males. But he has never done so — and he doesn’t do it in Coup de Grace, either.

Indeed, Allen’s ability to craft a frank and exciting thriller without being explicit should serve as a lesson to other filmmakers who keep putting young actresses in totally gratuitous states of undress.

Along with all this, I was especially struck by three salient aspects of this late-career winner:

Third, and perhaps most remarkable: Allen doesn’t speak a word of French; yet he managed to direct entirely in another language — with, I might add, his usual conviction and panache.

First, the lush, multi-hued cinematography by lensing legend Vittorio Storaro, who has worked with Bertolucci, Coppola and Warren Beatty; he’s also done several recent films for Allen, including the flawed but visually gorgeous Wonder Wheel (2017). So I guess some famous folks will still work with Woody!

Second, I remain impressed by Allen’s restraint with nudity and sex.

To put it bluntly: If he were really the sort of depraved deviant suggested by his widespread cancellation, he might

What’s more: All this startlingly recalls Allen’s lesser-known comedy Hollywood Ending (2002), in which he plays a director who manages to make a hit despite going secretly (and temporarily) blind during production. And that film’s finale, with the resultant movie flopping here but hitting big in France, feels like another prophecy of the way that country has now become the only place Woody Allen can make movies.

Let’s hope the 88-year-old master has time and energy to make a few more.

County Hall Corner: Local Colleges that Count with Clout

The current protests happening on campuses around the country are deja vu, but hopefully, they will not repeat an event that took place 54 years ago.

On May 4, 1970, four students were shot to death and nine others injured at Kent State University by the Ohio National Guard. During the 1960s, campus protests had been all the rage; this one was in response to the expansion of the Cambodian campaign, which President Richard Nixon had announced ve days before the Kent State tragedy.

In an article on the 50th anniversary of this event, the New York Times claimed that because of the tragedy, the United States was never the same a erward. is was generally true, but not in the way they presented it. As much as the Ohio National Guard was to blame, the massacre resulted in a more sobering approach to demonstrations. Colleges began to take more of an active control rather than a benign attitude toward these unauthorized protest events. As the USA got out of Vietnam in 1973, protests became more and more rare as students did not have major issues such as segregation or Asian wars to get angry about. ere were still riots, to be sure, such as the Los Angeles riots of 1992 as a result of the beating of Rodney King by LA police o cers.

But it wasn’t until the 2020s that it seemed all Hades had broken loose. ere were the Black Lives Matter and George Floyd riots in 2020-21, the January 6, 2021, riot at the US Capitol, and now the campus riots taking place all across the country.

It is hard to keep track, but dozens of colleges across the United States are experiencing these protests to some degree or another. e greatest surprise is the Ivy League colleges. Ranked among our country’s most prestigious institutions of higher learning, these students tend to have very high GPAs from high school, o en achieving or close to a perfect 4.0, and SAT scores that are 1500 or above out of a possible 1600. But that is just to get to the door — to get accepted, a student would have to be someone special. is could be through extracurricular involvement, leadership potential, intellectual curiosity, as well as letters of recommendation, or family heritage in the institution. In short,

these young people are supposedly the best and brightest of their generation. They are expected to become the future leaders in the fields of science, government, business, media, education, literally anything they would choose to put their minds to.

But their actions of late are going to cause the brightness of their potential to dim somewhat, perhaps even greatly. This brings us to our two local institutions of higher learning: Pennsylvania College of Technology and Lycoming College. Both of these schools deserve more recognition than they generally receive.

According to US News and World Report’s annual analysis of the nation’s colleges,

“Pennsylvania College of Technology is ranked #6 out of 52 Regional Colleges North. Schools are ranked according to their performance across a set of widely accepted indicators of excellence.” With majors such as health professions, engineering, mechanic and repair technologies, as well as business, management, marketing, etc., the school opens many doors for a good vocation.

But they are also an innovative school as well.

In two weeks, Penn College will host the Baja Collegiate Design Series competition run by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) International. Teams of students from universities all over the world design

and build small off-road cars. Dubbed Baja SAE Williamsport, the international event is expected to attract 80-plus teams and about 800 competitors from around the world.

Lycoming College is likewise a nationally ranked college, although it is more on the liberal arts side of the spectrum. It has an amazing 11:1 ratio of students to faculty ratio. They also have a surprising number of foreign students and emphasize internships, studies abroad, and undergraduate research.

In January of this year, the prestigious Inside Higher Education site featured an article entitled “A Small Pennsylvania College’s Big Investment in the Humanities.” The article highlighted a bold initiative beginning at Lycoming College. They quoted, “Lycoming spent about $75,000 to launch the Humanities Research Center in 2022, which connects

students with related experiential learning opportunities and supports undergraduate research. The college also received a $150,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities to advance a digital project about the history of the college, which is meant to be a pilot for possible future projects. Through internships and course assignments, students can collaborate with faculty members on research, digitizing archival material, conducting oral history interviews, creating exhibits, and producing a podcast.”

Other schools of higher learning might have more prestige and heritage, but sometimes total upheaval. In the real world in which these students will be competing, the product coming out of our two local institutions stands up very high.

“ e Blues Brothers: An Epic Friendship, the Rise of Improv, and the Making of an American Film Classic” by Daniel De Visé c.2024, Atlantic Monthly Press

$28.00

386 pages

The rst time you saw it, you knew you’d have to see it again. You were obsessed with the comedy. You couldn’t get enough of the music. You still remember the rstthird- h time you saw the movie, alone or with friends, in a theater or on TV. And in the new book, “ e Blues Brothers” by Daniel De Visé, yours wasn’t the only addiction that took hold.

As the audience quietly dgeted and cameras readied on the night in April 22, 1978, no one was sure how the opening skit of Saturday Night Live would be received. Its stars, Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi had talked about starting a band together for years. is would be their debut. It would have to work.

And it did: the audience seemed slightly unimpressed by the Blues Brothers at rst, says De Visé, but they were “stirred to jubilation” by the skit’s end.

Born in early 1949 to immigrant parents, John Adam Belushi grew up skirting discipline by making his mother laugh at his antics and his wit. He de ected problems at school in the same way but his clowning

belied a straight-laced aversion to drugs and alcohol. at lasted until he discovered a love of the stage, and he was introduced to “weed.” With a father who worked for the National Film Board in Canada, it’s almost no surprise that Daniel Edward Aykroyd, born in 1952, would be drawn to the limelight. A talented mimic, Dan began classes at a local Ottawa community playhouse at age twelve; brie y, he considered becoming a priest because his parents seemed to want it.

Eventually, because he was rather impish, the Aykroyds were told “that perhaps Dan wasn’t suited to the priesthood.”

It was just as well. Comedy was always his thing; in fact, he was working with Second City Toronto in the early 1970s when an “oddly proportioned, white-scarfed Albanian” joined the troupe. Aykroyd liked the guy, and he introduced Belushi to the blues...

e sarcasm and wit are still there. e music sings to your youth. Stream the movie this weekend and enjoy, but even if you’re a long-time fan, you may be surprised to read the back-story of that iconic movie in the book that bears its name.

Indeed, though he leans heavier on Belushi’s story than he does on Aykroyd’s,

author Daniel De Visé has a nice variety of obscurities to share in “ e Blues Brothers,” and they extend well beyond both big and small screens. As explanation, he starts by introducing readers to Aykroyd’s and Belushi’s earliest in uencers, blending in other Second City and SNL alumni and relevant people when appropriate. is absolutely invites reminiscing. Yes, the seed-to-screen timeline for the movie can be lengthy and sometimes overly-detailed here, but the narrative seems fresh despite its age. With the feel of a class reunion or like paging through your high school annual, this book will very much appeal to readers who can still quote the movie or sing its songs. Start “ e Blues Brothers,” and you’ll be hooked.

onday, May 6, 2024, marked the beginning of Holocaust Remembrance Day, or Yom Hashoah in Hebrew, which runs from the Sunday before through the following Sunday. Yom Hashoah also coincides with the 27th day of Nisan on the Hebrew calendar and marks the anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto uprising of April 19, 1943.

It is important to remember, however, that the Holocaust didn’t occur

overnight. It was a systematic process that resulted in the persecution and ultimate murder of six million Jews.

The first country the Nazis invaded was their own. Long before the invasion of Poland on September 1, 1939, the Nazi party exploited the aftermath of WWI to gain political power while blaming Jews for the economic and societal problems of the country. Jews were also demonized by racist and antisemitic rhetoric.

Overthrowing the democratic Weimar Republic or (2nd Reich), Hitler was appointed Chancellor in 1933 following electoral victories, and Germany

transformed into a dictatorship whereby Hitler began to enact his “Final Solution.”

As a result, the rights of Jewish citizens were increasingly stripped away. Jews were rounded up and forced into ghettos. They would later be sent to concentration camps.

On November 9 &10, the Nazis engaged in violent pogroms (an organized massacre of a particular ethnic group) against Jewish populations in what became known as Kristallnacht or “Night of broken glass.” Jewish property, businesses, and synagogues were destroyed. One hundred Jews were killed, and 30,000 were sent to camps.

Dachau was the first of these camps to

open in 1933. There were 44,000 camps in total serving different purposes.

Among the most notorious were the death camps such as Auschwitz, which the Soviets liberated in January 1945. 2020 marked the 75th anniversary of the liberation of the camps, where the Allies would discover many of these camps and signs of the atrocities committed.

Despite the countless documented evidence from various sources, there is a troubling trend of holocaust denialism.

Denialism originated with the Nazis themselves, who tried to conceal or destroy evidence of their crimes.

e year is di erent, but the antisemitic rhetoric is the same.

Regardless of whether it comes from select members of Congress or a foreign country. It’s still present today.

In 2016, Iran’s Ayatollah Khamenei posted a holocaust denial video on Remembrance Day. Today, we once again face a rising tide of antisemitism fueled by con ict abroad.

Hamas (o cially designated as a terrorist organization in Oct. 1997) has engaged in holocaust denialism. Abdel Aziz al-Rantissi, co-founder of Hamas in 2000, said, “ e so-called Holocaust is an alleged and invented story with no basis.”

In 2009, Hamas said to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) that they would “refuse” to allow Palestinian children to study the Holocaust, which it called “A lie invented by the Zionists,” and referred to Holocaust education as a “war crime.”

Similar rhetoric has also been used by Vladimir Putin in attacking Ukraine, stating that the military invasion’s aim was the denazi cation of Ukraine — despite President Zelensky himself being Jewish.

Today, Israel nds itself at war with Hamas because of Hamas invading Israel on October 7, 2023. e Palestinian cause has seen support from many quarters in the west, both o cial

and civil, predicated on the treatment of Palestinian civilians by Israeli authorities. It is worth noting that there are Jewish people joining Palestinians in the protest of the casualties in Gaza. Yet, when you see ‘protesters’ at college campuses destroying property and interrupting the daily lives of others, or engaging in violence, your protest loses any moral standing.

It’s been revealed many of these “protesters” are professional agitators who were carrying implements like log chains. Others chanted, “From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free!” is is in and of itself antisemitic and has been used by the terrorist group Hamas itself.

Two things can be true at the same time. e casualties in Gaza are disproportionate and are worth acknowledging as excessive. e victimization of Jewish peoples by Hamas, and others around the world, can be just as true as the abuses of Palestinian civilians at the hands of the state of Israel. One should not be permitted to hide behind their own trauma, past and present, as a justi cation for their abuse of power.

e loss of human life is always a tragedy, especially on such a scale. However, you can’t claim to support the existence of one group while denying the existence of the other. We must remember the past to avoid repeating it’s mistakes.

Faith Q&A: Why a Resurrection?

If you didn’t get a chance to read it, previous articles are always available at www.webbweekly. com

Have you ever said, “If God would just give me a sign, I would believe.”

It’s not an unusual statement — and it is a fair request. Anyone asking us to believe that they are God-in-the-flesh would certainly be required to offer a sign establishing their absolute credibility.

into that problem in Egypt. When Moses told Aaron to throw his staff on the ground, it turned into a snake. Pharaoh’s magicians did the same thing. See Exodus 7:8-13. You can’t believe every sign you see. So, what is the sign God gives us to prove His existence and His sovereignty? According to Paul in Romans 1:18-20, that sign is the natural world of creation:

Moses understood this principle. He also asked God for a sign before believing that God was calling him to free the Israelites from captivity in Egypt. God gave him two signs. See Exodus 4.

Gideon also asked for a sign before facing an overwhelming army. He even asked for a backup sign just to make sure the wet fleece wasn’t just by chance. The dry fleece the next day confirmed to Gideon the call of God. See Judges 6.

As far as signs go, we know they can’t all be trusted. We’ve all witnessed plenty of magicians and charlatans who fooled our eyes with sleight of hand and prestaged miracles. Moses and Aaron ran

The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of people, who suppress the truth by their wickedness, since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities — his eternal power and divine nature — have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.

And what is the sign that proves Jesus Christ is the Son of God, Messiah, King of Kings and Lord of Lords, Lamb of God Who takes away the sins of the world? Jesus and Paul both declare that the sign confirming Jesus as all of the above is the resurrection from the dead. It is your sign. It is my sign. It is the sign

Faith Conversations…

God has given to all the world. The word resurrection is translated from the Greek anastasis. It is a compound word containing ana, meaning up again, and histemi, meaning to stand The literal meaning of the word resurrection: to stand up again.

Jesus was dead and buried. Dead and buried. Three days later, under His own power and with the authority granted to Him by God the Father, HE STOOD UP AGAIN to never die again! He is risen! He is risen indeed!

Here are three passages of Scripture affirming the resurrection as the sign you’ve been looking for. I encourage you, read them, and then make your

choice. You will either accept the resurrection as your sign or you will reject it. That choice is yours to make, but don’t accuse God of not giving you a sign. He already has.

Matthew 12:38-42

Then, some of the scribes and Pharisees told Jesus, “Teacher, we want to see a sign from you.” But he replied to them, “An evil and adulterous generation craves a sign. Yet no sign will be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah because just as Jonah was in the stomach of the sea creature for three days and three nights, so the Son of Man will be in the heart of the earth for three days and three nights. The men of

Nineveh will stand up at the judgment and condemn the people living today because they repented at the preaching of Jonah. But look — something greater than Jonah is here! The queen of the south will stand up and condemn the people living today because she came from so far away to hear the wisdom of Solomon. But look! Something greater than Solomon is here!”

Acts 17:30-31

In the past, God overlooked such ignorance, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent. For he has set a day when he will judge the world with justice by the man he has appointed. He has given proof of this to

everyone by raising him from the dead.” John 10:14-18

“I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep, and my sheep know me — just as the Father knows me and I know the Father — and I lay down my life for the sheep. I have other sheep that are not of this sheep pen. I must bring them also. They, too, will listen to my voice, and there shall be one flock and one shepherd. The reason my Father loves me is that I lay down my life — only to take it up again. No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down and authority to take it up again. This command I received from my Father.”

United Churches Food Pantry Feeds Those in Need

Afew weeks back, I wrote an article about the growing issue of food insecurity, which can be de ned as the lack of access to food of su cient quantity or quality to meet a person’s basic nutritional needs.

We cover everything to get you ready for

From Opening to Water Testing, Supplies & Cleaning!

According to the Department of Human Services, approximately 1.7 million people su er from food insecurity daily in Pennsylvania. Additionally, the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture maintains that the causes of food insecurity are complex.

susceptible to food insecurity, as well as those with substance abuse problems, as these groups are becoming increasingly isolated. In addition, families with infants and young children, coupled with a lack of transportation, may have di culty obtaining quality food.

To help raise awareness of this growing problem, I would like to periodically highlight organizations in our region that are working hard to improve the conditions in our community.

Already a growing problem, the COVID-19 pandemic made things worse by leaving hundreds of thousands of Pennsylvanians out of work and closing health services around the state for an extended period from which we have yet to recover fully.

Lack of awareness of existing resources is also a signi cant problem as federal, state, and local programs may be relatively unknown. O en, those most in need of resources have limited access to information and access to community support.

Older adults are among the most

One such organization is the United Churches Food Pantry. To help ease the strain on local individuals and families, the food pantry, run by United Churches of Lycoming County, o ers a variety of produce and non-perishable food. “Many in the community are struggling with food insecurity for a variety of reasons, including being on a xed income as a senior citizen or as someone who lives with a disability. In the particular scope of the United Churches of Lycoming County Food Pantry, we extend the love of God, provider of all good gi s, to those in need when we help our neighbors,” said Molly Eisley, pantry manager.

When asked what would happen to

those it serves if the food bank was not in operation, Eisley responded, “Thankfully, we are not sure of what would happen to those who use our pantry if it were not in operation. The United Churches volunteers have been instrumental in keeping the pantry open for many years, and the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank has been very supportive as well. If the pantry were to close, our neighbors would have to seek out food assistance elsewhere in the area.”

When asked how to get involved with the pantry, Eisley responded, “Dedicated volunteers are needed to keep the food pantry running smoothly.” A list of the weekly food pantry needs can be found at https://uclc.org/ministries/food-

pantry/ and United Churches of Lycoming County on Facebook. Donations are very appreciated!

The pantry is located at 202 E. Third St., Williamsport (Academy St. entrance), and is open to anyone needing food assistance. People interested will need to register with the pantry and bring a photo ID. It is open to accept donations on Mondays (except holidays) from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. or by appointment. It is open for food distribution on Tuesdays from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. and Thursdays from 10 a.m.-noon. It is also open the first Wednesday evening of each month from 6-8 p.m. If you or someone you know needs food assistance, please call the UCLC Food Pantry at 570322-1657 and leave a message.

Noted Nature Author Tim Palmer At

Otto Book Store Friday, May 17

Get ready for an exciting event! e esteemed nature author and photographer,

Tim Palmer, will be holding a book signing of his latest work, Seek Higher Ground: the Urgent Solution To Our Flood Crisis, at Otto Bookstore on Friday, May 17, from 10 a.m. to noon. is is a unique opportunity to meet the author and get your copy signed.

Palmer, a renowned author of over 30

books on nature and environmental issues, has a strong local connection.

He served as an Environmental Planner in the Lycoming County Planning Department from 1971 to 1980, leaving a lasting impact on our community.

One of our own, retired Chief Lycoming County Planner Jerry Walls, has a personal connection with him.

“When I was Executive Director of the Lycoming County Planning Commission (1970-2008), growing interest in the Pine Creek Valley prompted us to hire

Tim Palmer, who was just graduating from Penn State. He had done some eldwork in the Pine Creek Valley for his environmental studies at Penn State. So, I created the position of Environmental Planner and hired him in 1971,” Walls told Webb Weekly. “He worked for us until 1980. e work expanded, so we hired Bob McCullough as our environmental coordinator. Tim would use his vacation days to travel in the summer to canoe rivers and hike trails across the USA. His writings on environmental issues and his photography got the attention of various media and publishers. In fact, that became his livelihood. So, he came to me in 1980 and told me he had so many commitments to publishers that

he needed to resign and devote full-time to those pursuits.”

According to Walls, Palmer now lives in Port Orford, Oregon. He has written 33 books. Of local interest are these books: America’s Great Mountain Trails — which features our Loyalsock Trail and Black Forest Trail. America’s Great Forest Trails — which features eight Pennsylvania Trails and Forests, and America’s Great River Journeys — which features Pine Creek. Seek Higher Ground tells of the Lycoming Planning Department’s response to the devastating Agnes Flood in June 1972.

Walls believes that this county’s proactive planning and community development response was so comprehensive and

UPMC Physician: Keeping a Spring in Your Step

Spring is here. The days are getting longer, temperatures are rising, and the birds are singing. The cold, inclement weather we’re used to in the winter causes many of us to decrease our activity and stay indoors. Though this sounds cozy and is a better choice than walking on slippery surfaces and chancing a fall, inactivity can lead to aches and pains and pain in our lower limbs and feet. The decreased activity causes our muscles to weaken which can increase our risk of foot and ankle injuries, especially as we head back outside and increase our activity levels. As we transition from fluffy boots to stylish sandals, it’s important to keep our feet and ankles happy and free from injury.

The human body has a tremendous capacity to adapt to physical stress. While we tend to think of “stress” negatively, physical stress, which is simply exercise and activity, is beneficial for our bones, muscles, tendons, and ligaments, making them stronger and more functional by the repetitive

breakdown and buildup of tissue. High-impact exercise can help strengthen the muscles and bones of our lower extremities, which can improve balance and stability. It also increases blood flow to the feet and improves overall cardiovascular health. However, high-impact exercise may put too much stress on our ankles and feet, particularly the plantar fascia (the band of tissue that runs along the bottom of the foot) and the bones and joints in the feet. This can lead to injuries such as stress fractures, plantar fasciitis, as well as several Achilles tendon disorders. Ensure the spring remains in your step as you put your best foot forward. To avoid injury, it’s important to gradually increase the intensity of your activities to avoid overuse injuries. Low-impact exercise, such as walking, is great exercise for your feet and can help improve your overall health. As you work up to your summer activity goals, mix up your routine so that days with high-impact activity are balanced out by days with low-impact activity. This will provide your body with the rest it needs to build strength, endurance, and flexibility. Resting is important for

reducing fatigue, improving circulation, preventing injuries, and alleviating pain.

In addition to a gradual ramping up of activity, you’ll want to take certain precautions to help avoid foot and ankle pain.

Stretch and Warm Up: Stretching your feet can help to improve circulation, reduce muscle tension, and prevent cramps and injuries. Try doing simple exercises, like ankle rotations or toe curls, to stretch and strengthen your feet.

Make Sure the Shoe Fits: Whether your fitness routine finds you running on the beach or blazing the local trail, you need to wear the proper shoes for your activity. Good shoes will fit comfortably, let your feet breathe, and provide proper arch support. Avoid wearing tight shoes for extended periods. This can reduce the risk of developing painful conditions such as corns and bunions. Also be sure to alternate your shoes, giving them time to dry out between wears. This can also help to prevent foot odor and reduce the risk of infections.

Maintain a Healthy Weight: The weight of your body stresses your feet with each step. The more weight you carry, the more pressure you put on these two appendages. Research has

linked a higher body mass index (BMI) with a greater likelihood of developing pain in the foot joints. Obesity also increases the risk of diabetes, which can damage nerves in the feet.

The adage “no pain, no gain” is dangerous advice. While minor pain and discomfort may be your body’s response to the increased activity and breaking down and building up of muscle, debilitating pain is cause for concern. Don’t push through the pain or you may end up sidelined into summer. If you have pain or problems that persist, worsen, or don’t improve with rest, seek professional help.

Consult a podiatrist or orthopaedic specialist who can diagnose and treat foot, ankle, and lower extremity conditions. Many injuries and conditions of the foot and ankle can be treated without surgery, but when an operative procedure is needed, advances allow orthopaedic surgeons to offer a broad range of options, including minimally invasive procedures.

Christine Nolan, DPM, is a foot and ankle specialist with UPMC Orthopaedic Care. She sees patients at Foot & Ankle Specialty Care located at 1201 Grampian Blvd., Williamsport, and 215 East Water St., Muncy. For more information or to schedule an appointment, call 570-3212020.

disrespectful of the bird! I use the leg and thigh meat and gladly accept any my fellow hunters want to give me! Place the accumulated legs and thighs in a large soup pot, cover the meat with water, and bring it to a hard boil – then reduce the heat to yield a slow simmer and let it do its magic for an hour or more. After the long simmer, the meat will be “fall-off-the-bone” tender and can be used in soups, casseroles, salads, cold sandwiches, or served with gravy over toast or waffles. The remaining broth or stock can be used to make soup or gravy.

The entire breast or one side will take on a wonderful flavor when slow-cooked in a smoker. Be sure to have a bowl or tray of water in the cooker to help keep the meat moist. The occasional basting with butter (everything tastes better with butter!) will also help.

Cooking in a cast iron skillet or on the grill is best accomplished when the breast meat is sliced – usually, a quarter to half an inch thick, but thinner works well in the frying pan. A layer of your favorite batter and a combination of cooking oil and butter will help the cooking process and add

to the flavor.

Cubing the breast, leg, or thigh meat into one-half-inch size cubes will allow it to be used in soups, chili, or casseroles. Once the meat is cubed, it can also be ground into burger meat. The ground meat is excellent as turkey burgers for chili use or makes great sausage, either as loose sausage or stuffed into casing material and twisted into links.

A favorite use as an appetizer, especially when introducing wild turkey meat to those who have never tried it before, is to stir fry 1” cubes of breast meat and serve them with mayonnaise and Dijon mustard dip or honey mustard.

However you decide to use the meat, it is great to know that it is that “freerange” meat that so many folks are longing for and paying a high price for at the grocery store. Further, it is not pumped up with all of those government-approved chemicals that make the domestic turkeys plump and juicy!

If you haven’t done so before, I urge you to try using the leg and thigh meat as I mentioned – I think you will be pleasantly surprised.

Over the past couple of years, I’ve had more and more people talk to me about getting into fly-fishing, and it certainly appears that it is growing in popularity.

One of the concerns that I hear from those who want to start fly-fishing involves the difficulty in learning to properly cast a fly. There is no doubt that casting a fly with a fly-rod requires more practice and takes a bit longer to master than the simple flip of a lure with an open-faced spinning outfit. The two procedures are exactly opposite in their presentations.

what they are doing with a flyoutfit. Most experienced flyfishermen will have an extra fly-outfit for you to use, and they can provide the necessary instruction to help you get started. The first outing or two may not go as planned but hang in there.

Spinning and casting outfits utilize light line with a lure of sufficient weight to pull the line off the reel when the weighted lure is cast.

In fly-casting, the opposite is true; it’s the weight of the line that pulls and pushes the nearly weightless fly out into the water. Admittedly, the fly-casting procedure is a little more difficult to learn, but with a little help, anyone can learn the technique.

One of the first things I tell people who want to get into fly-fishing is to go with someone who already knows

I remember my first outing with a fly-rod; my buddy caught a good number of trout, and I caught one. I also got hung up in several trees and bushes and scared plenty of trout when my fly slapped the water too hard. Once you become reasonably proficient, there’s nothing like setting the hook on a large trout that just sucked in your floating fly.

Some other information that I also like to pass along to someone just getting into fly-fishing is when it’s time to go out and buy your own fly-fishing equipment, talk with someone who already knows what it’s all about. Don’t just walk into a local department store and buy the first fly outfit you see on the rack.

Fly-fishing is like all other types of fishing in that different lengths, weights, sizes, and other factors will

vary according to where and what type of water you plan to fish.

Generally speaking, a medium-sized rig is a good place to start but check with an experienced fly angler to determine the specific length, weight, line size type, and other factors.

Something else I like to bring up with beginning fly fishermen is the cost factor. All fishing equipment costs money, but it seems like fly-fishing gear can often be at the top of the list.

I think there is sometimes a misconception that to get into flyfishing, you have to spend $500-$1,000 to get a fly-rod, line, and a reel — not so! Like everything else you buy, you

can do that if you want to, but it isn’t necessary. The truth is you can get a very acceptable outfit for a couple hundred dollars, and it will get the job done just fine. I’ve been out on more than one occasion when my “cheap” fly outfit outproduced the high-end, topof-the-line rig next to me on the stream; more often, it’s not how expensive the rig is but rather how well you utilize whatever rig you have.

Again, my advice is to take an experienced fly fisherman with you when you make that first purchase and go to a fishing specialty store that will have a wide range of rods, reels, and line to choose from.

With fear of jinxing its permanent arrival and hoping against a reversal of fortunes, it appears that spring has nally made its way to our neck of the woods! Being imbedded in sports all my life, the changing of the seasons has had more to do with which sport was coming up next than with what Mother Nature was putting before our eyes every few months. Baseball/so ball, football, basketball, and repeat have long been the calendar markings on my wall. I’m not much for golf, shing, and the like; it has always been team sports that have piqued my interest.

questions about my daily lifestyle to ll out. One of those questions asked, ‘How far can you walk without stopping to rest?’ To which I o ered my usual reply, “Until I get to my destination.” When asked about my exercise routine, the doctor chuckled at the response. Keeping active has been my routine, but it doesn’t include trips to the workout gym or fancy home exercise equipment. It includes light exercises, sit-ups, yardwork, and as much walking as I have the time to include in my daily endeavors.

As the years have passed, I have been fortunate to maintain an active participation in all three via coaching, broadcasting, and statistical endeavors. Although no longer throwing batting practice, each of these interests provides some degree of keeping active. As a country music fan, I rmly believe in Toby Keith’s song “Don’t Let the Old Man In.”

Having just passed one of those milestone birthdays, a trip to the doctor’s o ce for the annual physical provided one of those friendly reminders. As is the annual routine, I was handed paperwork asking

One of those occurrences came a week ago when the weather instantly went from a cool spring to the middle of summer overnight. Awakening to a blue sky and a delightful morning provided the perfect ingredients to get back to that walking routine that had been a bit dormant over the winter months.

Although our area has many walking routes, my preferred ones include the Market Street/Maynard Street Bridge walk, the South Williamsport Community Park, and the Commerce Park walking trail. All provide scenery along the way, with the Commerce Park trail particularly pleasing as it conveniently has mileposts keeping me on track for my three-mile journey.

I prefer walking a distance rather than establishing time standards, but the time spent in this singular endeavor provides for much more than exercise. It’s a bit of a social experience as you pass others along the way, some running, some bicycling, and some sporting pained expressions as they doggedly press on.

But all of those along these walking trails share the same determination to improve their lifestyle by taking part. Researching the health bene ts of ‘taking a hike’ provides some interesting bene ts:

1) Longevity – When done regularly, even leisure walking can extend life expectancy by countering the e ects of sedentary lifestyles. Older adults who engage in regular walking report better health and slower aging compared to their less active counterparts.

2) Improves heart health – Walking is a triple threat when it comes to protecting your heart health, helping to lower blood pressure, improve cholesterol levels, and stabilize blood sugar.

3) Fights fatigue and increases energy – Walking can signi cantly improve physical energy and vitality due to the release of ‘feel-good’ hormones that elevate mood and energy levels.

4) Promotes gut health – Walking, especially a er meals, has a signi cant positive impact on digestion, aiding in the faster and more e cient breakdown and absorption of food.

5) Maintains joint health – Walking can enhance knee joint lubrication and

function and, reduce pain, and improve function in individuals with arthritis.

6) Reduces symptoms of depression and anxiety – Research has shown that 35 minutes of walking could signi cantly reduce the risk of developing major depression by helping to modulate stress hormones and increase endorphin production.

7) Boosts brain health – Moderateintensity walking can help slow cognitive decline in adults by enhancing blood ow to the brain.

8) Relieves lower back pain – Walking promotes circulation, reduces sti ness, and strengthens the muscles that support the spine, all of which contribute to pain reduction and a quicker recovery.

9) Supports healthy body composition – Walking supports overall metabolic functions, which are crucial for long-term weight management and health.

10) Improves sleep quality – Regular walking leads to more refreshing sleep. It enhances circulation rhythms, promotes relaxation, and decreases symptoms of insomnia and anxiety.

If you have thought about it, try walking. No expensive equipment needed – just a comfortable pair of walking shoes and a safe place to walk. Walk at a pace you’re moving briskly, but not overexerting yourself. You’ll see some sights, begin to feel better about yourself, and have an opportunity to clear your mind. If you’re a columnist, it might even provide inspiration for a Webb Weekly column!

Golf claps to my friends at Pennsylvania College of Technology. e Wildcat Golf Team is on its way to the NCAA Division 3 National Championship. ey earned an automatic bid this past weekend, and PCT captured its second straight United East Conference crown.

Montoursville’s Peyton Mussina led the way. e le y sniper is solid. He is my friend. Peyton posted rounds of 70 and 79 to win medalist honors. His 149 total trumped the 45-player eld on the di cult par 70, 6,502-yard Philmont Country Club.

Teammate Trevor Keaton tallied 158 to tie for fourth. Will Orwig carded 78 and 81, which was tied for sixth. My man Gavin Baer went 78 and 82 for eighth. Gunner Redmond of Lock Haven also played well. He, too, nished in the top ten. Impressive.

Penn College had rounds of 304 and 320 for a 624 total. You play ve and score the best four. e Wildcats bettered Penn State Harrisburg by 9 strokes. Lancaster Bible, Rutgers

Camden, Penn State Abington, Wilson College, Penn State Berks, Rosemont U, and Clarks Summit didn’t have a chance. Mussina was named the United East Conference Player of the Year. He earned rstteam honors with Keaton. Orwig, Baer, and Redmond were second-teamers. Coach Rob Lytle earned the Coach of the Year. Bravo gentlemen. e Wildcats will now head to Boulder City, NV, on May 14-17. Best of luck, gents.

“ is has been our goal the entire year,” Peyton Mussina explained. We have played well all year, but our conference tournament is a do-or-die weekend. I am just so proud of the guys for coming away with a win. We really have no expectations for the National Championship. We now have the opportunity to compete against the nation’s best. We will put together the best 36 holes we can and see where we stand.”

I also want to give Will Eberz a little love. e freshman phenom from Stroudsburg, PA, played well in another tournament. On Sunday, Will carded a
