Enjoy the local area Great Torrington is a bustling market town perched above the River Torridge being surrounded on three sides by 365 Acres of Common ground which, towards the end of the 12th century, was given to the people of Torrington. In 1889 the rights to this land were transferred, by an act of parliament, to an elected Committee of Conservators.

The town centre is a hive of bustling local independent shops, coffee houses, cafes, public houses with a couple national branded small supermarkets thrown into the mix as well. In the heart of the town is found the Pannier market that offers a boutique shopping experience and weekly market stalls full of interesting goodies on both a Friday and Saturday. The Plough Arts centre offers a varied programme of theatre, cinema, comedy, live music, visual arts and workshops.

Education within the town is provided by the Bluecoat Church Of England school, an early years specialist school for children from 2 – 11 and by the Great Torrington School which offers a wide and varied programme of classes and activities.

For those who like being active there are a wide range of sports on offer from rugby to bowls, football to golf and tennis to swimming. There are miles of footpaths surrounding the town, many of which link up with the renowned Tarka Trail, a 180 mile figure of eight being a haven for walkers, joggers and cyclists alike that takes you on a discovery of stunning countryside, beautiful beaches, cliff top views and really does showcase what makes North Devon so special.

North Devon is well known for its surfing, paddle boarding and sailing with a number of beaches being only about 8 miles away, whilst Great Torrington ishome to the world famous Dartington Crystal and only a couple of miles out is found RHS Rosemoor a magical place to wander around in any season.
