ime again to leave another year behind us and proudly present to you a new edition of the popular Weathertex Sustainable Design Trends annual magazine for 2022. Although 2021 still showed some market challenges especially within the building industry with blistering demand, soaring prices and supply shortages, Weathertex was able to provide customers with a level of certainty when it came to pricing and product availability. This was easily achieved by being an Australian familyowned cladding manufacturer located in the Hunter Region NSW and sourcing only locally second graded grown timber from PEFC certified plantations. The pandemic has permanently changed the future of building design, with consumers opting more than ever for sustainable green building materials and no longer willing to sacrifice the environment, their health, wellbeing, and day to day comfort living.

Passive House

assive design is design that works with the local climate to maintain a comfortable temperature in the home. Good passive design should reduce or eliminate the need for additional heating or cooling depending on your location. A passively designed home can deliver a lifetime of thermal comfort, low energy bills, and low greenhouse gas emissions. They use extremely little energy, preserving resources for future generations by having a minimal carbon footprint. This amazing Passive House Courtyard project by Envirotecture and Distinct Building Services is a demonstration of Passive House at its best, performance driven design showing that, in the right hands, Passive House is a flexible, adaptable standard that can deliver healthy, comfortable buildings on ‘imperfect’ sites. The materials used in a home’s construction have a significant impact on its performance, durability and energy use. Careful analysis and selection of materials, and the way they are combined, can improve the comfort and cost effectiveness of a home, and greatly reduce

its lifecycle environmental impact. You can also reduce demand for new materials by considering waste minimisation principles in the design and construction of your home. Locally sourced, low embodied energy cladding material Weathertex was specified on this home to limit the footprint of the home as much as practical. The choice of cladding has a significant effect on your home’s environmental performance, cost, aesthetic appeal and property value. Weathertex is made from forestry waste rather than saw log grade timbers and does not use old growth forest products. Weathertex is third party accredited and only use PEFC material. The home also won the BDAA Weathertex Industry Partner Award category of 2021 BDAA National Design Awards. cDonald’s Australia opened its 1000th store, and celebrated by launching the first “green” Macca’s in Australia. Pictured here, the green Macca’s is located in Melton, South Victoria, is the firstever sustainability flagship McDonald’s and features a stack of environmentally friendly elements. In addition to using recycled material in the building, infrastructure and furnishings, the restaurant will use 100 per cent renewable energy, including solar energy sourced from rooftop panels. A green wall welcomes diners when they enter the dining room, full of living plants that increase biodiversity, provide insulation and clean the air.

Curved Appeal

t’s no surprise that humans love curves. In a 2013 neuroarchitectural study, it was found that participants were more likely to judge curvilinear spaces more favourably than rectilinear. The most likely explanation for our love of all things curvaceous is that they remind us of the beauty of nature and the feminine form. That is why smartphones, cars and many other tangible items have curved instead of sharp edges. Specifiers often favour curvilinear designs to reflect a sense of fluidity from the natural surroundings of a building, such as the ocean or forest. Curves can also soften the impact of the building on the surroundings. Curved or circular patterns provide relief and softness to straight and angular lines and balance the harshness of too many straight lines. Curved lines give a human quality to interiors; they can be easy on the eyes and pleasing to view. However, not all architects and builders are keen to incorporate curved walls because there is a perception that it can be a costly and complicated exercise to achieve. Not with Weathertex products, especially with our super flexible planks!

Weathertex Selflok primed and natural range weatherboards are warranted up to 25 years with a radius curve minimum of 2500mm when installed horizontally. If you favour the vertical linear, use the wide range of Weathergroove primed and natural architectural panels where they are warranted with a radius curve of minimum 7500mm. For more curved vertical grooved designs, Weathergroove panels can be cut down and segmented around a curve of min 1200mm radius. Although outside Weathertex warranty specifications, it can still meet Australian building code requirements with the help of an expert builder and expert advice from Weathertex. According to psychology, rounded edges are good for the soul! This is because they create a sense of flow that doesn’t overstimulate. Smooth edges calm and soothe us, putting our minds at ease and helping us relax. From softly curved walls and windows to shapely internal mirrors, it’s all about curves in design right now. atten Up trend continues to offer a unique alternative to traditional cladding design but in 2022 we’ve also added barn style homes to the mix.

Barn styles similar to Batten Up designs are the perfect combination of tradition with modern twists such as monochromatic colour palettes and sleek fixtures. They all form stability, structural strength and safety for residents. The use of natural materials such as Weathertex cladding helps to underline this concept. The batten up & barn-style external timber cladding of the house emphasises its traditional construction. But due to the laconicism and special configuration of the facade decoration, it was possible to achieve a contemporary touch. They look simply fashionable, not dictating to trends but adapting to the natural landscape.

e’ve been seeing dark exterior colours trending for a few years now, and although they may be bold and somewhat daring, our love for them isn’t waning anytime soon. Dramatic Achromatic

n achromatic colour scheme offers a simplicity and cleanliness that you can only find with grey, black, and white combinations. After all, achromatic colours are neutral. Colour trends come and go. It can be difficult to keep up so you should opt for what you like. However, two colours are always in fashion – black and white. How we use them changes, but there is no doubt this classic partnership can work in so many different settings and is always on trend. Black and white colour schemes are a classical look. They always appear sharp and high contrast making a statement. Black and white is a stable colour combination for designers. The contrast of black and white has been a much loved colour combination in fashion for many years. When we think black and white, we think black tie – smart and sophisticated, and most definitely not out of date. Tonal variation is important in such a simple scheme. It is easy to explain with black and white as you can picture a scheme that is predominantly white with just a few light greys to create interest. 52

This combination will give you a light and airy coastal feel. If however you include more dark grey or black elements in the scheme, you create quite a different mood with the strong tonal variation between pure white and jet black. This tonal difference makes a very strong design statement. So hopefully you can see that achromatic colour schemes are simple but can give excellent results. This scheme can create a light and airy look with just a touch of black to add elegance. Or you can achieve a very striking effect with a bold combination of black and white or a very moody, interesting scheme using predominantly dark grey and black. There is certainly nothing boring or pedestrian about a black and white scheme! The beauty is that a black and white palette lends itself to either a very traditional and classic style home or a more modern cutting edge look. If you like the elegance and tradition of a country-style home, warm up black and white with timber, natural foliage and other natural textures.
