Time again to leave another year behind us and proudly present to you a new edition of the popular Weathertex Sustainable Design Trends annual magazine for 2022.

Although 2021 still showed some market challenges especially within the building industry with blistering demand, soaring prices and supply shortages, Weathertex was able to provide customers with a level of certainty when it came to pricing and product availability. This was easily achieved by being an Australian familyowned cladding manufacturer located in the Hunter Region NSW and sourcing only locally second graded grown timber from PEFC certified plantations.

The pandemic has permanently changed the future of building design, with consumers opting more than ever for sustainable green building materials and no longer willing to sacrifice the environment, their health, wellbeing, and day to day comfort living.

It’s become our social, professional and environmental responsibility as planners, architects, designers, builders and citizens to advocate for sustainable practices in everything we create. We’ve come to realise that sustainable design is not a choice, but a necessity, if we value not just our planet, but our lives. COVID-19 unfortunately has been our wakeup call.

By selecting Weathertex as your cladding option, you’re making a difference. All Weathertex products have a better than zero carbon footprint and are made from 100% natural ingredients –hardwood and wax. It’s the only product of its kind in the world containing no added artificial glues, resins, formaldehydes or silica.

However, sustainable design does not have to compromise on cost or on aesthetics. Be inspired and motivated by some of Weathertex most inspirational projects making waves across Australia and around the world.

Weathertex a better choice naturally!

Passive House EDITORIAL:

Passive design is design that works with the local climate to maintain a comfortable temperature in the home. Good passive design should reduce or eliminate the need for additional heating or cooling depending on your location. A passively designed home can deliver a lifetime of thermal comfort, low energy bills, and low greenhouse gas emissions. They use extremely little energy, preserving resources for future generations by having a minimal carbon footprint.

This amazing Passive House Courtyard project by Envirotecture and Distinct Building Services is a demonstration of Passive House at its best, performance driven design showing that, in the right hands, Passive House is a flexible, adaptable standard that can deliver healthy, comfortable buildings on ‘imperfect’ sites.

The materials used in a home’s construction have a significant impact on its performance, durability and energy use. Careful analysis and selection of materials, and the way they are combined, can improve the comfort and cost effectiveness of a home, and greatly reduce

its lifecycle environmental impact. You can also reduce demand for new materials by considering waste minimisation principles in the design and construction of your home.

Locally sourced, low embodied energy cladding material Weathertex was specified on this home to limit the footprint of the home as much as practical. The choice of cladding has a significant effect on your home’s environmental performance, cost, aesthetic appeal and property value.

Weathertex is made from forestry waste rather than saw log grade timbers and does not use old growth forest products. Weathertex is third party accredited and only use PEFC material.

The home also won the BDAA Weathertex Industry Partner Award category of 2021 BDAA National Design Awards. Weathertex are the Building Designers Association of Australia’s Principal Partner and look forward to providing quality products to BDAA designers for many years to come.

McDonald’s Australia opened its 1000th store, and celebrated by launching the first “green” Macca’s in Australia. Pictured here, the green Macca’s is located in Melton, South Victoria, is the firstever sustainability flagship McDonald’s and features a stack of environmentally friendly elements. In addition to using recycled material in the building, infrastructure and furnishings, the restaurant will use 100 per cent renewable energy, including solar energy sourced from rooftop panels. A green wall welcomes diners when they enter the dining room, full of living plants that increase biodiversity, provide insulation and clean the air.

Weathertex sustainable hardwood cladding was used on the McDonald's Restaurant at Melton South. The combination of Weathergroove 150 Woodsman panels with Selflok Ecogroove 150 Woodsman weatherboards helps to highlight the architectural design features and the natural timber grain adds warmth and texture, visually reinforcing the use of sustainable natural materials.

Weathertex offers quick installation, saves you money and looks fantastic. Many fast food chains and commercial operators are specifying Weathertex on their projects as part of their commitment to becoming more environmentally

responsible. Weathertex is the obvious choice for sustainable healthier cladding. Weathertex is endorsed through the PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification), which promotes Sustainable Forest Management through independent third-party certification. PEFC works throughout the entire forest supply chain to promote good practice in the forest and to ensure that timber and non-timber forest products are produced with respect for the highest ecological, social and ethical standards. Thanks to its eco-label, customers and consumers are able to identify products from sustainably managed forests.

Weathertex has been through a rigorous evaluation from Global GreenTag Pty Ltd to determine their outstanding “green performance” and we are proud that we were the FIRST manufactured product to receive a GreenTag Platinum certification with a GreenRate R Level A for our natural range products. Additionally, we’ve received Gold certification for our primed product range.

The durability of Weathertex products with 1,000kg/m3 product density and a minimum 32mpa rating is also a massive plus for the high traffic areas such as restaurants, shopping centres, hallways, schools and family homes.

EDITORIAL:

The Future of Commercial Design

COVID-19 has accelerated a range of preexisting trends in the commercial sector around health and wellbeing, activity based working, flexibility and the drive for better space utilisation. Sustainability, smart buildings and the digital workplace are also reshaping the office space of the future.

The pandemic has bolstered corporate interest in redesigning work space to simulate nature, have better air filtration systems and use more sustainable materials.

Companies have been increasingly embracing biophilic design — the concept of bringing the health benefits of the outdoors inside while cutting down on energy costs and boosting health and work performance. They are turning to more sustainable and natural materials like Weathertex, mass timber, or solid wood panels, rather than concrete or steel, the production of which contributes hugely to global greenhouse gas emissions.

Workspaces built with more timber store carbon and offset greenhouse gas emissions, reduce labour resources and produce a light and natural interior, which can have positive health impacts on the people working there, partly by enhancing biophilic design and are low in Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC).

Studies that make connections between toxic products and human health issues speak for themselves. Consumers have become increasingly aware and cautious about product toxicity and demand greater transparency. Making this information available and clear for consumers is essential in this day and age.

Weathertex was the first manufacturer to receive Global GreenTag Product Health Declaration™ and achieved a Platinum Level HealthRATE™  – the highest rating that can be reached under the PHD and HealthRATE system.

In Australia, we know that businesses lose over $34 billion annually in lost production and wages due to employee ill health, yet what is largely unknown by Australian business owners, is that toxic ingredients hidden in products used in workplace buildings are a significant culprit of workplace sickness. Product Health Declaration™ pushes for transparency to disclose risks and hazards in products used in workplaces and, in Australian homes too.

All GreenTag certified products are considered healthy to use based on the best scientific information of today from the UN Globally Harmonised System and EU REACH programs with individual Consultant Toxicologist peer reviewed risk assessment.

Fashionable Fusion

Be unique. Be a trendsetter. Fashionable Fusion is all about individuality, using asymmetrical patterns and mixing and matching various styles, textures and profiles together to create your own fashionable unique signature and winning design.

The simplest way to show off your design prowess and to give your project some non-symmetrical interest and layers is by incorporating Weathertex's newest innovative Weathergroove Fusion architectural panel into your design. Weathergroove Fusion combines numerous groove spacings from their most popular profiles to create a unique ununiformed look that is still perfectly visually balanced.

Where the repetition of symmetrical arrangements has a tendency to feel monotonous over time, Fashionable Fusion keeps us on our toes. Another way to create this geometrically flawless display of design is by mixing and matching Weathertex's wide range of profiles together.

All primed products and natural ranges have a consistent 9.5mm thickness with matching accessories, making it easier to achieve interest and definition in your design.

Create a fuss free fusion elegance on your next project by using Australian made and owned Weathertex products.

Designing a home for life

Mixing and matching different cladding profiles can bring a design to life and create something original. It’s a simple way to transform a home design without breaking the bank. The finish for a new house should be designed at the same time as the layout and form of the building – never added as an afterthought.

Natural Wonder

More than ever before, bringing nature into our designs and fitting the building thoughtfully within the landscape is an important goal for today’s construction professionals. Immersing nature into design, and creating a space which better connects to it, not only looks amazing, but is also proven to improve our health, enhance our well-being and reduce stress.

Concern for the environment and for sustainability has also dramatically increased in recent years. More and more projects are being completed using sustainable building materials. These materials offer a number of advantages, both economic and environmental.

When choosing a building material for a project, a number of factors need to be considered when determining how sustainable the material is. These materials need to be harvested from renewable rather

than non-renewable resources. The environmental impact of the material chosen must be considered over the whole lifecycle of the project, rather than merely over the short term.

So whether you’re building or planning a renovation and selecting the most sustainable cladding solution is at the forefront, you can’t go past Weathertex's Natural range.

The Weathertex Natural range of weatherboards and panels is the first manufactured product range in the world to obtain a Platinum GreenTag certification (Global GreenTag is a third-party, multi-criteria, consensus-based and externally verified Type 1 ecolabelling program and is the only certification mark in the sector approved by the ACCC, the US Patents and Trademark Office and Green building rating tools internationally).

Weathergroove 150 Natural panels were suggested by the builder as a time and cost saving alternative. The quick and easy installation of Weathergroove panels saved money, whilst the panels provide the natural timber texture and consistent colouring that the client was looking for.

Curved Appeal

It’s no surprise that humans love curves. In a 2013 neuroarchitectural study, it was found that participants were more likely to judge curvilinear spaces more favourably than rectilinear.

The most likely explanation for our love of all things curvaceous is that they remind us of the beauty of nature and the feminine form. That is why smartphones, cars and many other tangible items have curved instead of sharp edges.

Specifiers often favour curvilinear designs to reflect a sense of fluidity from the natural surroundings of a building, such as the ocean or forest. Curves can also soften the impact of the building on the surroundings.

Curved or circular patterns provide relief and softness to straight and angular lines and balance the harshness of too many straight lines. Curved lines give a human quality to interiors; they can be easy on the eyes and pleasing to view.

However, not all architects and builders are keen to incorporate curved walls because there is a perception that it can be a costly and complicated exercise to achieve. Not with Weathertex products, especially with our super flexible planks!

Weathertex Selflok primed and natural range weatherboards are warranted up to 25 years with a radius curve minimum of 2500mm when installed horizontally. If you favour the vertical linear, use the wide range of Weathergroove primed and natural architectural panels where they are warranted with a radius curve of minimum 7500mm.

For more curved vertical grooved designs, Weathergroove panels can be cut down and segmented around a curve of min 1200mm radius. Although outside Weathertex warranty specifications, it can still meet Australian building code requirements with the help of an expert builder and expert advice from Weathertex.

According to psychology, rounded edges are good for the soul! This is because they create a sense of flow that doesn’t overstimulate. Smooth edges calm and soothe us, putting our minds at ease and helping us relax.

From softly curved walls and windows to shapely internal mirrors, it’s all about curves in design right now. Here’s some of Weathertex's most inspiring curvaceous designs.

Batten Up & Barns

Batten Up trend continues to offer a unique alternative to traditional cladding design but in 2022 we’ve also added barn style homes to the mix.

Barn styles similar to Batten Up designs are the perfect combination of tradition with modern twists such as monochromatic colour palettes and sleek fixtures. They all form stability, structural strength and safety for residents. The use of natural materials such as Weathertex cladding helps to underline this concept.

The batten up & barn-style external timber cladding of the house emphasises its traditional construction. But due to the laconicism and special configuration of the facade decoration, it was possible to achieve a contemporary touch. They look simply fashionable, not dictating to trends but adapting to the natural landscape.

Weathertex Weathergroove panels either in Smooth, Woodsman or Natural textures are the perfect cladding to use as the main building façade. Batten dimensions, spacing and profiles can be consistent and uniform or can be varied to create unique sequences for a customised individual design. Visit Weathertex website for some technical tips and guides on how you can create this amazing look.

The Batten Up trend is also ideal for interior ceilings and wall linings and the exposed timber battens create texture and warmth to any living space. Not only aesthetically, timber also performs strongly in the acoustic arena - whether the objective is to enhance sound or reduce sound. A classic example of what can be achieved with timber acoustics is our very own Sydney Opera House.

Pitched ceilings and exposed wood and repurposed barn doors create the perfect rustic-chic inspired flair. Let Weathertex help you stamp your next individual project design!

Slim & Groovy

Slim & Groovy trend continues grow and take shape both within residential and commercial design. Engage your eye and stimulate your senses with thin vertical lines into your space to create grandeur, depth and desirable texture.

Weathertex's newest and now ever most popular Weathergroove 75mm profiles are the perfect wall panelling addition that can easily achieve this stylish and sophisticated timeless design. Available in Smooth, Woodsman and Natural for a wide range of applications, these extremely durable and sustainable timber wall panels are super easy to install and will instantly create the wow factor into any indoor or outdoor design.

Dynamic vertical lines have the ability to lift the mind, the spirit and create striking shadow lines to any design. As such, architects and designers continue to specify Weathertex Weathergroove range because they inspire awe and diminish the significance of human scale.

Vertical lines convey a feeling of strength and dignity to external facades, but are also equally stunning

to any indoor area such as living rooms, bedrooms, entryways as well as offices, shop fitouts and public spaces.

Slim & Groovy will never go out of fashion, create a symmetrical modern style on your next design with the Weathergroove range!

DARK & MOODY

We’ve been seeing dark exterior colours trending for a few years now, and although they may be bold and somewhat daring, our love for them isn’t waning anytime soon. If you’re on the fence about going dark on your exterior, here’s some magnificent Weathertex designs for some inspiration.

While they are extremely versatile, we love the way dark exteriors have the ability to bring a classic element to modern homes and a unique historical twist on traditional homes. Whether you opt to paint Weathertex's wide range of primed profiles or char stain their Natural range of architectural panels and weatherboards, Weathertex has the right profile to create the perfect dark mood for your project.

Style Tip

When surrounded by a green landscape, dark sophisticated palettes bring an unmatched contrast and drama that we just can’t get enough of. They also look great meshed with a variety of other trim colours, materials, and textures.

However, it is important to understand the effect paint colours can have on the performance of construction products. Depending on your climate, direct sunlight on dark surfaces can become hot, paint colours with low Light Reflective Values (LRV) can affect the thermal efficiency of the building.

Will you dare to go dark and moody in 2022?

Embrace an inkier colour palette to create a moody vibe that takes you to the dark side. By pushing the colour boundaries and carefully working with textures, a dark theme will create a luxurious feel to your home.

Classic Shingles Plus, trims, fretwork and fancy gables will add the final touches to this Coastal Grandeur trend!

DESIGN TREND:

Dramatic Achromatic

An achromatic colour scheme offers a simplicity and cleanliness that you can only find with grey, black, and white combinations. After all, achromatic colours are neutral.

Colour trends come and go. It can be difficult to keep up so you should opt for what you like.  However, two colours are always in fashion – black and white. How we use them changes, but there is no doubt this classic partnership can work in so many different settings and is always on trend. Black and white colour schemes are a classical look. They always appear sharp and high contrast making a statement.

Black and white is a stable colour combination for designers. The contrast of black and white has been a much loved colour combination in fashion for many years. When we think black and white, we think black tie – smart and sophisticated, and most definitely not out of date.

Tonal variation is important in such a simple scheme. It is easy to explain with black and white as you can picture a scheme that is predominantly white with just a few light greys to create interest.

This combination will give you a light and airy coastal feel. If however you include more dark grey or black elements in the scheme, you create quite a different mood with the strong tonal variation between pure white and jet black. This tonal difference makes a very strong design statement. So hopefully you can see that achromatic colour schemes are simple but can give excellent results.  This scheme can create a light and airy look with just a touch of black to add elegance. Or you can achieve a very striking effect with a bold combination of black and white or a very moody, interesting scheme using predominantly dark grey and black.

There is certainly nothing boring or pedestrian about a black and white scheme! The beauty is that a black and white palette lends itself to either a very traditional and classic style home or a more modern cutting edge look. If you like the elegance and tradition of a country-style home, warm up black and white with timber, natural foliage and other natural textures.

Take a look at some stunning black and white colour combinations and get ideas for your home design.

Inner Sanctuary

With the pandemic forcing many of us indoors throughout 2021, perhaps now, more than ever, we seek to create or renovate our interior spaces into the ultimate inner sanctuary – one that not only looks fantastic, but also is functional, safe and promotes our wellbeing.

Creating a tranquil abode goes beyond your design aesthetic and objects within a space; it starts with simple, mindful practices that allow you to feel stress-free. It’s human instinct for us to appreciate and be attracted to the charming beauty of nature. There are countless ways to foster a sense of inner calm through earthy pieces such as natural stone, bamboo and of course Weathertex.

Weathertex's wide range of natural and primed weatherboards and architectural panels continue to be used internally to

create the ultimate inner sanctuary. More than ever, it’s becoming crucial to select healthier materials in our homes.

Weathertex has a low VOC, is 100% natural and contains no nasty chemicals such as glues, resins, formaldehyde, or silica. You can rest comfortably knowing that you’ve made the right decision not only for the planet but also for your loved ones.

Timber cladding is an easy and a costeffective way to bring any internal room to life, whether it's on walls, ceilings or used as decorative features. Another major reason why a large number of people are choosing Weathertex as their preferred internal lining solution is that wood is a natural insulator, which is great at preventing heat from entering the space in Summer and keeping the cold outside during Winter.

Multitalented

Weathertex is super versatile with endless possibilities and applications. Because of its light weight and flexible nature, Weathertex products are not only used on walls but also on ceilings, garage doors, as feature walls, screens and cabinetry.

Although most often an afterthought, ceilings play a significant role in affecting the aesthetic and ambience of a room. If you’re looking for an inventive way to open up a space, bring in some light, texture and the wow factor why not use Weathertex timber cladding as a ceiling lining.

Interior wall cladding, also known as shiplap, vertical panelling, and v-groove wall lining signals a return to trends of the past. Rather than having just boring painted walls, incorporating timber cladding as a feature wall will add tone and texture, and creates the illusion of scale and height to a space.
