York Racecard - Friday 25th July

Page 1

British Stallion Studs will contribute £2million towards British prize-money in 2025, bringing our total investment to £40million since we were founded in 1983

It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to York for what looks set to be a super evening of racing plus music.

Our only evening meeting means Music Showcase, an event that combines top class racing with great headline music acts. For the first time we are pleased to bring you a “double-header”, as we very much look forward to the performances of both Natasha and Sophie In order that they can both deliver the show we all want, there will be an interval, perhaps enjoy a bite to eat or a drink whilst the stage is set.

This is also the penultimate day of The Sky Bet Go Racing in Yorkshire Summer Festival, now in its seventeenth year and firmly established thanks to the generous and loyal backing of our weeklong sponsors, Sky Bet and Goldsborough Hall. The nominated charity for this festival is Racing Welfare.

In Yorkshire we have nine superb racecourses, over 100 training yards, the National Racing College at Doncaster, Jack Berry House in Malton and Goffs Bloodstock Sales, all making for a successful racing industry in the county Yorkshire trainers and jockeys are flying high this season with tremendous results across the UK’s best meetings and Europe – we are proud to be a part of such a successful sport in the County

The most generous support of tonight’s sponsors has also helped offer record prize money approaching £200,000 with a Listed contest, the British Stallion Studs EBF Lyric as the valuable feature. An interesting clash of the generations sees, Victory Queen, a developing three -year-old filly from the Godolphin yard of Charlie Appleby hoping to build on two victories already this season, in opposition to an experienced campaigner in the five-year-old Imperial Quarter for Roger Varian.

If you are a first-time visitor tonight, please do explore the racecourse - use the maps on p6-7 & p8-9 to guide you, or just ask any of the team in the teal blazers who will be happy to help My tip is to stand close to the rail as the horses race past, you can feel as well as hear the thunder of hooves.

For others among you, this may be annual pilgrimage to the Knavesmire, if you want a quick guide to what we’ve been up in the past year see p42-43 for our latest developments.

Thank you for your support today and during the wider Sky Bet Go Racing in Yorkshire Summer Festival. We hope to welcome you back again tomorrow for racing followed by Ronan Keating on the stage After that, our preparations will go up a gear as we are very much looking forward to staging our flagship meeting, the Sky Bet Ebor Festival (20-23 August) where some of the best horses from around the world look set to compete over four days of top-class racing, fashion and fun.

Please respect our neighbours and city as you make your way home this evening, but for now, I hope you thoroughly enjoy your night.

Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai is proud to be supporting two Group 2 features - the Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai Middleton Stakes and the Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai Dante Stakes – races which continue to form an integral part of our partnership with York Racecourse and our wider international sponsorship portfolio.

This year we have extended our support to include title sponsorship of the new Al Basti Equiworld , Dubai Summer Saturday on 28th June which combines exciting Group 3 action on the track with post-racing entertainment to match, ahead of our return in August for the Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai Gimcrack Stakes in August.

Congratulations are due to York Racecourse Chairman, Bridget Guerin, and the York Racecourse Committee for their continued commitment to continually improving the quality of racing on the Knavesmire and ever increasing prize money which I am sure will prove to be a compelling proposition for owners and trainers throughout the season.

I wish them and all those involved with staging of today’s meeting horses a pleasant and successful day.

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part usually in three races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.

The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

A RACECOURSE FOR ALL

We want the racecourse to offer both a welcome and an enjoyable evening to all our racegoers and in delivering that we recognise that some may need additional assistance from us. We are also pleased to recognise the sunflower lanyard scheme.

The first thing to say, please just ask for help, if the team don’t have an instant answer, then they know someone who will. The team in the Racecourse Reception (behind the Ebor Stand) act as the link to the rest of the team, as needed.

FAQS

Is there accessible and blue badge parking?

Yes, I hope you found it. All our car parks have designated spaces near their front row. Can I get help with getting to/from the car park, taxi rank or shuttle buses?

Yes, there is a complimentary buggy service to all these points, ask a member of the team and they will radio to arrange your collection. Thank you for your patience as the buggies have a maximum of six passengers, and only one is wheelchair accessible and it’s a big site.

Can I bring a wheelchair?

Yes, if you need to; but we also offer complimentary hire, again from Racecourse Reception (see told you they were the hub). As we hope you’ll appreciate, there are only so many wheelchairs on site, if you need to reserve in advance then call 01904 620911. Considerately piloted mobility scooters are permitted.

Can I bring somebody to help?

Yes, we appreciate that will come in various forms, we hope our “companion comes free” scheme is a help, before your next visit check it out online at www.yorkracecourse.co.uk or just ask the team today.

Are there wheelchair viewing platforms?

Yes, in all stand side area and Stands - easiest thing to do is to ask our Stewards, though a map is available from, you guessed it, Racecourse Reception. Please use these in the spirit intended, with carers being prepared to step aside to allow space for those who need the view the most. There is a dedicated viewing space for the music.

What about toilets and are they part of the Radar scheme?

Yes they are, all the permanent toilet blocks have a accessible capability, please ask for directions, the team nearby have keys, or check that map from you know where.

Are their wheelchair height food and drink counters?

Yes there are but not as many as we’d like, please ask a member of the team to assist you.

Wheelchair height betting?

Yes, there are some Tote counters set at a reduced height though a better plan might be to use the courier service that operates in areas such as the main Champagne Lawns; the Tote team themselves are always willing to help.

Can I bring my assistance dog?

Of course, as the tribute to Grady demonstrates, registered assistance dogs are most welcome. There was one more thing?

Please ask, we are keen to help wherever we can, appreciating our racegoers may face a range of challenges.

KNAVESMIRE TIP

A wide-open contest in which only a tentative vote can go to YAASER Jim Goldie’s charge caught the eye when staying on into third in the Ayr Gold Cup Trial on Monday, having been denied a clear run at a crucial stage Stall 20 isn’t ideal, but he is expected to be ridden patiently and returning to 7f looks a real positive. Quest For Fun won this off 3lb higher in 2023 and signs of a revival have been there for some time now. Others to note include Riot, Havana Prince and Commander Of Life.

FIRST RACE PRESENTATION & BEST TURNED OUT

The trophy for this race will be presented to the winning owner after the race by Denise Sheasby, CEO The Eventmasters Group

Eventmasters Group have generously given £100 to the racing groom responsible for the best turned out horse in this race

York has the Longest and Best Preserved city walls in England, and now a race named after them - the Listed John Smith’s City Walls Stakes.

AUGUST CALENDAR

With the first stage of entries received for the feature races at the

20 Wednesday

Things to do: Win a race that has thrice been best in the world

Twenty seven of the best middle distance horses are currently entered in the £1.25m Juddmonte International. An intriguing list of hopefuls is made all the more interesting by the entry of Sheema Classic winner, Danon Decile, owned by Danox Co Ltd and trained by Shogo Yasuda. It would be a first European excursion for the team and they will be hoping to go one better than Zenno Rob Roy, who finished second exactly twenty years ago after making the 25,000-mile round trip. France could be well represented with the likes of Caldangan, who was last seen winning the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud. Dual Derby winner Lambourn would likely be the chief hope of the Emerald Isle for Aidan O’Brien, along with Sandown Eclipse winner Delacroix, they head thirteen potential runners from across the Irish Sea. The best British hope comes in the form of Field Of Gold for the Gosden team. Bred by Juddmonte, the son of Kingman is already dual Group One winner this season and currently heads the betting.

Become the sixteenth colt to win Sky Bet Great Voltigeur and Betfred St Leger

Fifteen colts have done the double and this year’s list of entries provides plenty of hope that 2025 could see that number increase, following Continuous’s success in 2023. Merchant looks to be the leading hope after he won the King George V Stakes at Royal Ascot, having won at York on his previous outing. Serious Contender chased home Lambourn in the Irish Derby after previously finishing just a length behind Merchant at Royal Ascot, he looks to be the current number one for Aidan O’Brien. Ralph Beckett could be well represented with the unbeaten Amiloc. He could well follow in the footsteps of 2020 winner Pyledriver, who won the King Edward VII Stakes before winning this Knavesmire contest.

21 Thursday

Things to do: Prove to be one of the best fillies in Europe

The last time the race went over to mainland Europe was in 2012, when Shareta scored for Alain de Roger-Dupre, this year Les Bleus could have Sunly, in the colours of powerhouse, Juddmonte. She may not be alone, with Aventure completing any potential French challenge for Christophe Ferland. Ballydoyle has had a strong grip on this race in recent years, winning four of the last five renewals. Minne Hauk will go in search of a third Group One after victories in the British and Irish Oaks. Tattersalls Musidora winner Whirl could also be a major player after finishing just a neck behind her stablemate at Epsom. In all, there are a eight entries from the Emerald Isle, including from Aidan’s son, Joseph and Paddy Twomey. Kalpana provides the chief home team challenge for Andrew Balding and is another representing Juddmonte. She’s already a Group One winner and any cut in the ground would surely increase her chances of the York race becoming a second. Her run in the King George this weekend may be informative.

Sky Bet Ebor Festival, we mark your calendar.

22 Friday

Things to do: Be the fastest

Emphatic Norfolk winner Charles Darwin could bid to become the first two-year-old since Kingsgate Native (2007) to win the Friday feature as well as the first for Aidan O’Brien since Mozart in 2001. Australian revelation Asfoora, may well attempt to go a few better than his fourth last year and could give Henry Dwyer a first winner on the Knavesmire. Commonwealth Cup winner Time For Sandals will bid to give trainer Harry Eustace another Group One, he may well be joined by Curragh Group Two winner, Arizona Blaze Who represents big spenders, Amo Racing.

Follow in the hooves of greats like Mill Reef or Rock of Gibraltar

23 Saturday

North Yorkshire could be well represented in the G2 Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai Gimcrack Stakes, with impressive winner, Reciprocated, the pick of the entries for Karl Burke. He remains unbeaten in two starts and would likely take a lot of stopping. There could be a bit of American flare, with Outfielder holding an entry for Wesley Ward. He was an emphatic winner on his only start. Charlie Appleby has won two of the last ten renewals, so keep tabs on impressive Newbury winner Wise Approach.

Things to do: Earn a place in the folklore of the Knavesmire - you’ve got two shots this year!

That is the honour that awaits the victor of one of the toughest flat handicaps in the world and one of the richest in Europe, the £500,000 Sky Bet Ebor. The beauty of a handicap is that you can make a case for all twenty-two who finally make the stalls, never mind the full entry list. So, which to mention; Sky Bet Race To The Ebor winners seem a logical place to start. Tabletalk has gone up in the weights considerably since his win here last year. Jorvik winner Almosh’her will be hoping to bounce back from his Royal Ascot disappointment. Curragh victor Mr Percy is an interesting proposition, while recent John Smith’s Silver Cup winner Al Qareem may just be handicapped out of contention. Whoever wins, they can look forward to a warmer November than is on offer in Yorkshire, as the Sky Bet Ebor winner now has a guaranteed start in the Lexus Melbourne Cup. Folkore also awaits the first ever winner of the now Group One Sky Bet City Of York Stakes. Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes winner Lazzat makes plenty of appeal for Wathnan racing if stepping up in trip, while three time Group One winner Rosallion may well step down a furlong to run here. Charlie Maranoa, recently acquired by the Bond Thoroughbreds could make a homecoming raid after a second in Group One company in France. Hopefully the above sets the scene for a twenty eight race festival where £100,000 is the lowest prize fund and the richest maiden race in the land, the British Stallion Studs EBF Convivial Maiden Stakes, or the richest nursery handicap in the Sky Bet Stakes, add to the cocktail of high fashion and high class sport.

RACE DESCRIPTION

Distance: 2m

Race Type: Handicap

Rating: 61-80

Prize Money: £25,000

Age: 4+

Stalls: Inside Rail

Still, a handicap, so seeking equal competition once again amongst horses aged four and older, this time our longest distance of two miles.

Those closer to the top will carry more weight; Savrola tops the list, carrying the heaviest burden today.

Pit your wits against the handicapper – if you need some help look for C (has won at York) or D (has won over this distance) against the horse’s name, look how Zimmerman carries both.

KNAVESMIRE TIP

MOLTEN SEA has bumped into a couple of in-form rivals when occupying the runner-up spot recently, but the improving four-year-old can have his day in the sun this time around. There will be plenty of challengers, including Northumberland Vase hero Savrola, who looks fairly treated from a 5lb higher mark. Rock N Roll Pinkie didn’t get the clearest of passages when third over C&D earlier this month but is respected, along with Marbuzet, who finished a place ahead of her that day.

A WINTER’S TALE:

WHAT IS NEW AT YORK THIS SEASON?

NEXT GENERATION CANOPIES CHAMPAGNE LAWNS

Nine next generation canopies now stand proudly on the Champagne Lawns. Clever enough to let the grass grow beneath them, they should prove popular if we get a summer shower. For the October racedays the built-in heaters will allow racegoers to keep enjoying the fresh air Each one has a speaker, so the race commentary will come to your table

BUSTARDTHORPE END

SOUTHERN END DEVELOPMENT

Last August we were honoured when Her Majesty The Queen, our Royal Patron, opened this development to the South of the Knavesmire Stand. Check out the Churchill Tyres lawn & canopy, the Theakston and Guinness bars, as well as food outlets and a WIlliam Hill shop

MR MOWITALL

Joining the grounds team over winter were a trio of robotic mowers, one creatively named, Mr Mowitall. They are helping with the lawns and car parks, leaving the human talent better able to focus on the track itself

THE TEAM NEVER REST

Maintenance is key, if a little dull. Over 6,000 pints of paint have been used by the team this winter and the Knavesmire Stand Roof has had extensive repairs, (it is nearly thirty years old!).

A LIVING FLOWER WALL

OPPOSITE THE MELROSE STAND

The flowers are petunia and petchoa, grown by Head Gardener, Zak Rafferty and his team, from seedlings in our greenhouses. That Insta moment now has real flowers behind it.

THE

BARS HAVE IT

Over the Winter a number of bars have been given a face-lift. There is a new Pink Gin & Cocktail Bar on the main Champagne Lawns, a second Guinness Bar near the Roberto Lawn, with a refreshed Kylie Minogue Wines Bar next door The fun murals from the Dublin based brand should make a good selfie

NEW ON THE MENU

Around the racecourse there are a lot of new choices. Perhaps the sweet treats of the Churros will follow your Nachos, both are now part of the Knavesmire Courtyard offering.

If you like spice, then the eateries on the ground floors of both the Knavesmire and Ebor Stands now serve our homemade Curry Club dishes.

Finger lickin’ chicken? Try the grills in either the Bustardthorpe End or the John Carr Terrace. Try the Rustic Pizza freshly baked at the Moët Roof Terrace.

Race three is limited to limited to two-year-old horses, so in their first season of racing.

When they were bought, at a recognised auction, the market was deemed as an assessment of their quality and so potential, the most expensive being categorised as Band A, the next group as Band B and so on. If you must know, the Band As went for above £50,000 descending in roughly £20,000 bands thereafter.

Any horse of the same sex, in higher Band racing in opposition to one from a lower Band must start by carrying two pounds in extra weight compare Circle Of Trust and Golden Haze. Though all the fillies start with a lower weight than the boys, the same logic applies amongst themselves, which is why Jennys Palace is 2lb lower than Ubettabehave. The explanation as to why Amakhala Warrior has the top weight lies in his success at Haydock.

If this all sounds a bit complicated, then a pin is a proven method in these races.

THIRD RACE PRESENTATION & BEST TURNED OUT

HOW MIGHT YOU SOLVE A BIG SPRINT HANDICAP?

THE TOMAHAWK RESTAURANTS, HANDICAP STAKES

This afternoon’s Sprint Handicap looks a tricky betting proposition for even the most experienced of racegoers with a competitive field of 22 closely matched runners set to go to post. Whilst picking a lucky number or a meaningful name may produce the winner from time to time, a wiser approach would be to apply some straightforward methodology to finding the potential winner.

Narrowing down the field of 22 declared runners can prove easier than you think if you follow a few simple guidelines, to hopefully identify the winner of this and the other handicaps throughout the afternoon. Before we start, it is important to understand what a handicap is. Once a horse has raced three times, they are given an official rating (often referred to as a handicap mark) by the British Horseracing Authority. This provides a numerical guide to each horse’s level of ability. Ratings usually start at around 40 for a modest performer with the mighty Frankel finishing his career rated a lofty 140. The ranking works essentially as an ability scale, so each time a horse runs this rating is adjusted either upwards for a good performance or downwards for a weaker effort, so that it reflects the horse’s most recent form.

Each of these rating points are meant to reflect 1lb in weight, so looking at today’s race, Ingleby Archie - rated 80 - is considered 1lb “better” than Raatea who is rated 79. If these horses were to race carrying the same weight, then theoretically Ingleby Raatea should win as he is the better horse according to the handicapper. The handicap is therefore designed to create a level playing field and, in theory, if the handicapper was completely correct in his assessment, then all 22 runners would cross the line together. Of course, this is never the case so how do we separate those that might on a favourable mark ahead of the race?

Now we know what a handicap is and how it works, it is time to delve into the different factors to consider when searching for the winner. The winner is ultimately what we all want to find! Don’t forget to ensure you keep an eye and an ear out for non-runners, there will be announcements over the PA system and the screens around the course will be updated with non-runner information, as they have to be in it to win it!

1) FORM

Here at York it often pays to side with horses in form, so look out for those with lower form figures. In particular, last time out winners are ones to focus on, so Noble Consort and Emperor Caradoc are of keen interest, while Equity Law and Alfa Whiteburd will need to improve on their recent efforts.

2) THE DRAW

Where a horse is drawn in the stalls can be an important factor, particularly in a sprint, and this is perhaps one of the most debated topics in racing. However here at York, those drawn low to middle have often held the upper hand in bigger fields. The likes of Northern Spirit and Mondameej can use this to their advantage.

3) DISTANCE

Having a runner who has already shown their liking for a particular trip can be invaluable, especially over this six furlong trip where speed is necessary. Most of today’s runners have shown they have what it takes over the six furlong trip, however a few have yet to win over the distance, which could be a negative, these include Sports Coach, Airman and Winged Messenger.

4)

GROUND

The ground, and its effect on each horse, is one of the most important, but often overlooked, factors when it comes to making a selection. In simple terms, different horses run better on different types of surfaces – some prefer a lightning quick surface whilst others run best when the mud is flying. Ingleby Archie has done most of his winning in testing conditions, whilst many of Mondammej’s success have been on the artificial surfaces. So, make sure to check the weather and the ground description.

5) YORK RECORD

“Horses for courses” is not a popular phrase by accident, especially here at York which has a knack at producing track specialists. Northern Spirit and Showtime Mahomes have both won over course and distance and would rate highly on any potential shortlist.

6)

CONCLUSION

Following these simple rules has helped to narrow down the shortlist. Northern Spirit appeals most, having won at York already back in September of last year last time out and is nicely drawn in stall 2. Top weighted Ingleby Archie is yet to win over six furlongs but was second at the Knavesmire last time out and more than deserves his place here.

Noble Consort arrives with consistency on his side with five top-two finishes this year including victory last time out at Doncaster. Upped 7lb for his last success, the four-year-old has more to do here, and preference is for ALFA WHITEBURD A length second here in May, he is 5lb better with winner Ingleby Archie now and can be forgiven his latest run at Doncaster. Wherever he finishes, Ingleby Archie wont be far behind and may even prove to be his biggest rival, despite top weight.

One Mile About Two Furlongs (2,000 metres)

See page 76 for conditions of this race.

RACE DESCRIPTION

Distance: 1m 2f

Race Type: Listed

Prize Money: £70,000

Age: 3+ f&m

Stalls: Inside Rail

Our fifth race is a part of the Pattern pyramid which denotes the best contests, Listed (like this one), Group 3, Group 2 and Group 1. This race is open to 3yo+ fillies and mares only and is over a mile and a quarter

All are registered with the European Breeders’ Fund. This means that their sire (father) is based and registered in Europe with the EBF, which is a scheme to encourage the best in bloodstock.

As racing recognises that younger horses, aged 3, are likely to be at a different stage of development, notice how Victory Queen is one of the quintet to benefit by starting with a lower weight.

KNAVESMIRE TIP

Trainer Ralph Beckett landed this contest last year, and he looks to have another ideal candidate in REVOIR, who drops in grade after contesting the Oaks last time out. Narrowly denied at this level when second at Newbury before that, the daughter of Study Of Man narrowly sets the standard on form, and she is preferred to Rainbows Edge, who has won three of her five starts, and looked in need of a step up in trip when seventh in the Kensington Palace last month. Victory Queen lost her unbeaten record when fourth at Sandown, but she still ran with credit and is likely to be thereabouts.

A farewell handicap, are you feeling their fascination yet? Your key numbers are just for 3yos only, over a speedy five and a half furlongs.

If an apprentice jockey partners a horse, they can claim a reduction in weight to balance their relative lack of experience, see how Jeany May benefits by 5lb as Alex Jary makes his way in the saddle.

An in-form stable could be the clue here, see the table at the beginning of this race.

If you are successful, then you can bask in the glory of picking the last York winner until at least 1.27pm tomorrow. Before then, go find a dance floor

KNAVESMIRE TIP

LADY ROXBY has been a revelation since joining the Michael Herrington yard and a slight rise in distance could eke out further improvement as she looks to follow up on a taking success at Beverley last time out. Narrowly denied over further at Hamilton, Top Juggler is a key player, along with the progressive Luna A Inbhir Nis, who has won five of her last six.
