OFFICIAL RACECARD | £4.00 THURSDAY MAY 18TH FEATURING THE AL BASTI EQUIWORLD DUBAI DANTE STAKES (GROUP 2)
2023
DANTE FESTIVAL

As one of the largest suppliers of horse feeds, bedding and supplements in the GCC region, Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai aim to make available premium products gathered from across the globe, at a competitive price.

We are once again absolutely delighted to support to the Chairman, Bridget Guerin and York Race Committee Members for what we hope will be another superb season.

We are thrilled to once again, to proudly sponsor the Gr2 Middleton Stakes, the Gr2 Dante Stakes and also the wonderful Gr2 Gimcrack Stakes. We are also pleased to continue to invest in the Owners and Trainers facilities, assisting York with maintaining those high standards.

We wish all Owners, Trainers, Jockeys and Stable-staff the very best of luck here at York and we all look forward to some terrific racing on The Knavesmire throughout the season.

www.albastiequiworld.com
Malih L Al Basti Owner & Founder Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai.

A very warm welcome to the Knavesmire for the second day of our season.

York Racecourse is committed to supporting the sport and to attracting the best horses to race for us all to enjoy. As an indication of this commitment, prize money over the three days of the Dante Festival is £1.425m, representing a six-figure increase on last year, with every race worth £25,000 or more. All eight of the Pattern grade contests see an increase on their 2022 values, so putting them at record levels. Let’s hope we see a similar quality of winners to last year when star horses Highfield Princess, Emily Upjohn, Desert Crown and Stradivarius won the feature races.

With a record £535,000 in prize money on offer for today’s seven race card, we are set to see some wonderful horses with two Group Two contests both backed by Al Basti Equiworld Dubai. With prize money for the Dante at a record level of £180,000, it is the richest race of its type in Britain. After the success of Desert Crown last season, some eleven colts have already gone on from winning on the Knavesmire to claim the Derby trophy (as displayed in the Ebor Stand today). There have been 77 Derby’s since Dante himself won the Derby in 1945 when it was held at Newmarket, trained in Middleham under the care of Matt Peacock. We welcome here today relatives of Dante’s owner Sir Eric Ohlson. Today we will find out if Dear My Friend/Killibegs Warrior might follow in Dante’s hoofprints, hailing from Charlie Johnston’s neighbouring yard Liberty Lane is another who could give Yorkshire and reigning champion trainer on the Knavesmire, Karl Burke, quite the season. All would be entering a Derby betting market currently dominated by contenders from Aidan O’Brien’s County Tipperary yard, he’ll be hoping that Continuous joins that band today. The winner of the Dante today also gets a free entry into the Irish Derby and Grand Prix de Paris.

Notebooks or iPad to the ready wherever you look today as 8 elite fillies and mares undertake the six-figure staging of the Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Middleton and the aspiring sprinters lock horns in what is the British EBF 40th Anniversary Westow Stakes.

This prize money can only be achieved through the support of racegoers and of our sponsors. Many thanks to Al Basti Equiworld Dubai, Sky Bet, Collective Green Energy, Lindum York and the European Breeders’ Fund, for their valuable backing.

All that before we mention a potential record- breaker in our opening race. If Copper Knight comes into the Winner’s Enclosure to meet connections, it will be for the seventh time, so would make him the “winningmost” horse on the Knavesmire after Dakota Gold was unable to win yesterdays sprint.

The team have been busy preparing for your return, the Flying Frankie serving Theakstons Ebor IPA is a new destination on the John Carr Terrace, whilst on the ground floor of the Knavesmire Stand the renamed York Kitchen and Cafe serves a range of home-made goodies, including deep-filled Yorkshire Puddings.

Equine ambassador to the Knavesmire, Remy (aka Goldream when successful on the track), is back with us; do go and say hello to him and the team from New Beginnings.

This week Racing Welfare are leading the sport through Mental Health Awareness Week, we are proud to play our part. The new “sunflower” benches spread around the course offer a chance for a quiet moment of reflection.

I hope you have a thoroughly enjoyable and successful day.

A RACECOURSE FOR ALL

We want the racecourse to offer both a welcome and an enjoyable day to all our racegoers and in delivering that we recognise that some may need additional assistance from us.

The first thing to say, please just ask for help, if the team don’t have an instant answer, then they know someone who will. The team in the Racecourse Reception (behind the Ebor Stand) act as the link to the rest of the team, as needed.

FAQS

Is there disabled and blue badge parking?

Yes, I hope you found it. All our car parks have designated spaces near their front row.

Can I get help with getting to/from the car park, taxi rank or shuttle buses?

Yes, there is a complimentary buggy service to all these points, ask at racecourse reception or next time you arrive just call 01904 620911. Thank you for your patience as the buggies can only transfer 4 people at a time and it’s a big site.

Can I bring a wheelchair?

Yes, if you need to; but we also offer complimentary hire, again from Racecourse Reception (see told you they were the hub). As we hope you’ll appreciate, there are only so many wheelchairs on site, if you need to reserve in advance then call 01904 620911.

Can I bring somebody to help?

Yes, we appreciate that will come in various forms, we hope our “carer comes free” scheme is a help, before your next visit check it out online at www.yorkracecourse.co.uk or just ask the team today.

Are there wheelchair viewing platforms?

Yes, in all stand side area and Stands - easiest thing to do is to ask our Stewards, though a map is available from, you guessed it, Racecourse Reception. Please use these in the spirit intended, with carers being prepared to step aside to allow space for those who need the view the most.

What about toilets and are they part of the Radar scheme?

Yes they are, all the permanent toilet blocks have a disabled capability, please ask for directions or check that map from you know where.

Are their wheelchair height food and drink counters?

Yes there are but not as many as we’d like, please ask a member of the team to assist you.

Wheelchair height betting?

Yes, there are some Tote counters set at a reduced height though a better plan might be to use the courier service that operates in areas such as the main Champagne Lawns; the Tote team themselves are always willing to help.

There was one more thing?

Please ask, we value your feedback so we can keep improving in this area.

RACING CTION

THE 1895 DUKE OF YORK CLIPPER STAKES (GROUP 2)

Highfield Princess returned for John Quinn to try and defend her crown but was narrowly denied by the fast-improving Azure Blue for the Michael Dods team.

Azure Blue took her form to the next level when landing yesterdays 1895 Duke Of York Clipper Stakes. Having only ran a week and a half ago, it was a quick turnaround, but she looked fresh as ever when running home a ready winner.

Paul Mulrennan was happy to sit in behind the early leaders of Highfield Princess and Art Power for much of the race but as they came down to the last two furlongs, he pulled her out to challenge.

Marshman had been a big gamble before the race but couldn’t pick up down the far side under Clifford Lee and is another to fall just short in this race as a three-year-old.

Highfield Princess looked to be going marginally the best as they hit the furlong pole and did pick up nicely when asked by Jason Hart. She managed to steal a few lengths on Azure Blue but coming into the final half furlong the four-year-old seem to find an extra gear to pick up the Nunthorpe winner.

The two battled all the way to the line but Paul always looked as though he thought he was going to get there and get there he did to win by half a length.

Commanche Falls ran a blinder to finish third and give Michael Dods the third spot as well as the first. Annaf outran his odds to finish fourth, while gamble of the race Marshman finished in fifth, clear of the remainder.

THE TATTERSALLS MUSIDORA STAKES (GROUP 3)

Gosden senior notched up his eighth win and Frankie his seventh in the Tattersalls Musidora yesterday with Soul Sister, who looks to be another talented filly. The market couldn’t have her before the race but she proved that odds are just a number when running home a four length winner.

Favourite Infinite Cosmos took them along at steady pace, with Novakai sat in behind for the Burke operation. She took a keen hold in the early stages, but Clifford Lee managed to settle her down as they went down the back straight.

Lambada looked badly outpaced under Ryan Moore and the Ballydoyle filly never looked comfortable at the back of the field. Gather Ye Rosebuds was prominent throughout but was caught a little wide under Jamie Spencer, she looked to hang right and is no doubt better than that.

Coming into the straight Frankie looked confident on Soul Sister but she still had a lot of ground to make up. Novakai and Infinite Cosmos kicked clear from the field coming down to the two marker and despite them looking to have the race between them, the eye couldn’t be help but be drawn to Soul Sister.

She travelled powerfully down the stands side to pick it up and once Frankie gave a flick of the reigns she cleared away from her rivals.

Will she manage to join the likes of Snowfall and become the eighth filly to do the Tattersalls Musidora, Betfred Epsom Oaks double? A ‘5/1’ from Sky Bet and others offers that hope to connections.

GUESS WHO?

Can you name this trainer who won the Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Dante Stakes in 2014?

WHO AM I?

Can you identify the horse, owner, trainer or jockey who has enjoyed big race success at York in the past from the clues provided? There is an answer for each question.

1. My final race came in 2018 at the Breeders’ Cup. I raced twice at York winning the Dante and Juddmonte and my first progeny are being seen this season.

2. I spent five years in my early twenties working for a number of different trainers in Australia. I’ve worked with John Quinn and Tom Dascombe and now have my own trainers licence. In 2022 I trained 39 winners in Britain and some of my big race wins include The Rockfel Stakes and Railway Stakes. Last year I trained the winner of the penultimate race on this card, bonus point if you can name the horse.

3. Sired by Dubawi, I won the Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Middleton Fillies’ Stakes in 2018. I have a sibling with very similar name and my full brother was a top rated two-year-old. Can you name me and my brother?

WHERE CAN I PLACE A B T

There are various points and different ways to bet here at York.

1. Place a bet with the tote. 2.

go to the betting ring. 3.

William Hill Retail SP Betting Shop. With over 300 tote betting points located around the course, there is always one nearby. The main betting ring is situated in front of the Knavesmire Stand with an additional ring in Course Enclosure and sometimes a third set of bookies on Bustardthorpe Lawn. There are three William Hill Retail SP betting shops at York; one at the southern end of the stands, the second on the ground floor of the Knavesmire Stand and the third being the refurbished shop on the ground floor of the Melrose Stand. In addition, racegoers in the Clocktower Enclosure will find a William Hill Retail SP facility underneath the clock tower.

PLACING YOUR BET WITH A BOOKMAKER

Shop around for the best odds against your selection. When you have decided on where to place your bet, state the number of your chosen horse and the stake, for example “number 4, £2 win”. Listen to the bookmaker repeat the number of the horse and the stake to his/ her clerk and hand your stake to the bookmaker. You will then be given an itemised receipt that gives details of the bet and shows potential winnings. You should keep this ticket safe.

COLLECTING YOUR WINNINGS

If your selection wins (or, in the case of a place bet, is placed), hand the ticket back to the bookmaker for settlement. NEVER destroy your ticket until after the “Weighed In” announcement has been made. There may still be a stewards enquiry and the first past the post, or placed horses, may be disqualified. On rare occasions even the horse coming fourth has been awarded the race. You may bet with confidence with any bookmaker as they have all been approved by the Administration Of Gambling On Tracks Limited, which administers the betting rings at each of Britain’s 59 racecourses. The AGT also offers a full late pay service, in case a bookmaker leaves the course before you have collected your winnings. Late Pay Claims should be sent to Administration Of Gambling On Tracks Limited, 3a, Kings Hall, Parsons Green, St Ives, Cambs, PE27 4WY.

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part usually in three races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.

The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

Racing Post Standard Times

is an independent assessment based on how long it should take a 90-rated horse to win on Good To Firm ground at York Race tactics, rail movements, and wind direction are amongst the many factors to also affect the time for each specific race.

Non-runner

Ground - The Trainer states the ground is not suitable for this horse, the official going has changed since the time of declaration.

Vet - The Trainer states the horse is subject to a Veterinary Certificate.

Self Certificate - The trainer has advised the authorities that the horse is not able to race today.

WHEN IS A T TAL PRIZE FUND

NOT A FINAL TOTAL… SUPPLEMENTARY ENTRIES

The Total Prize Fund is the total amount of money that the horses in a race are competing for and to be split between the winner and the placed horses.

In a real example, to explain the numbers today, the total prize fund for both the Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Middleton Fillies’ Stakes and the The Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Dante Stakes have risen because of one supplementary entry, with Free Wind joining the fillies’ and mares’ race and Passenger joining the Dante.

The split of prize money between the podium horses and then between the owner, trainer, jockeys and stable is subject to a fairly complicated formula. However in outline the winning owner receives 441/2%, trainer 51/2%, jockey 4% and stable 21/2%. You can see further details of the split between horses on the page called “Race Conditions” near the back of this racecard.

The prize money on offer at the Dante Festival is set to attract the very best horses this week It is funded from several sources; the racecourse itself, the sponsors, the levy board and the entry fees paid by the owners – sometimes referred to as the “Stake” hence the term “Stakes”.

For the major races there are a series of entry dates whereby connections will decide to enter the race and then whether to stay in the race as the performance of the horse and plans for it unfold.

For most Group races, the horses would usually be entered with quite a while to go before the raceday, for example the Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Dante Stakes closed for original entries on April 4th. However, there is a late “supplementary entry” stage six days before the race. This is designed to allow a horse that may be a late developer or whose plans have changed to take their chance. The supplementary entry fee is set at a higher level than the normal entry route so it takes a bold move by the owners.

If you think about it terms of playing poker, the connections of a late entrant have a better idea of their opposition so pay a premium.

Passenger won a Newmarket maiden in late April, prompting some to consider that he has a similar “late bloomer” profile to Desert Crown, the winner of both of the Dante and the Derby for the same Sir Michael Stoute team. On the other hand, Free Wind has shown real talent in previous seasons, winning the Lancashire Oaks last year. Prone to hiccups, she has been off the track since that July victory, so the Clarehaven team understandably wanted to take the maximum time before committing her to this run.

The breakdown of the new prize pots can be seen below.

COPPER KNIGHT: JOINT WINNING-MOST HORSE HERE

EYES ON OUR FIRST WHEN COPPER KNIGHT, HOPES TO RECORD WIN NUMBER SEVEN.

The Denham family first ran Copper Knight at York back in 2017 when he won the first of his six races. It was an assertive performance over then stable mate Rasheeq and was very much a sign of things to come.

He had further success at York before taking his most prestigious prize at the track. The John Smith’s City Walls Stakes 2019, his first Listed success. His superb sixth victory came at last year’s Ebor Festival.

A plaque has been erected in his honour on the pre-parade ring side of the weighing room, where it reads ‘winning most’, as he may well not be done with winning at York just yet!

At the 2022 Dante Festival both the Michael Dods trained Dakota Gold and the mighty Stradivarius joined Copper Knight with a record equalling sixth win, will Copper Knight go one better today?

RACE DESCRIPTION

Distance: 5f

Race Type: Handicap

Rating: 86-105

Prize Money: £35,000

Age: 4+

Stalls: Farside

Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Dante Day begins with the Lindum York Stakes. Such races are designed for close competition with the handicapper as the independent assessor who rates horses on past performances seeking to get them crossing the line together, by handing out differing weights.

The best will be the highest rated horse, Mountain Peak here, and so will carry more weight.

So pit your wits against the handicapper – if you need some help look for C (has won at York) or D (has won over this distance) against the horse’s name, see how Copper Knight is one to show both, having won here a record 6 times already Good luck in starting with a winner!

KNAVESMIRE TIP

Not many can confidently be ruled out and the likes of previous C&D winner Korker and Copper Knight, who is already a dual winner of this race, are high on the shortlist in a highly-competitive renewal. However, DESIGNER is in the right weight bracket of previous winners and John Butler’s lightly-raced filly shades a narrow vote of confidence. Whenthedealinsdone is another on a appealing mark, while Clarendon House and Mondammej also have solid chances.

BIG RACE TRENDS

THE AL BASTI EQUIWORLD DUBAI MIDDLETON STAKES (GROUP 2)

PREVIOUS WINNERS - LAST TEN RUNNINGS

INTRODUCTION

The Group Two Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Middleton Stakes has a rich tradition of attracting the very best older middle-distance fillies and mares from across Europe. The recent roll of honour includes the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud winner Coronet.

BETTING

It is safe to say that this isn’t a race in which taking a chance on an outsider has proved successful. In the last ten years, there have been five winning favourites and only one horse has won the race at a double figure price.

TRAINERS

Since the Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Middleton was first run in 1981, its prestige has increased from Listed status to Group 2 and therefore it may be unfair to group past winners into the same category. However, Sir Michael Stoute holds the best record in the race overall with seven winners. The likes of John Gosden, Ralph Beckett and Andrew Balding have all saddled winners in recent years.

RECENT FORM

Recent history indicates that fresh horses tend to go well in this race, but only five of the last ten winners were making their seasonal reappearance. When it comes to previous form it is a difficult race to weigh up as it has continued to improve in quality. However, it is noticeable that since it was upgraded to a Group Two, six of the nine winners were already winners at Group Three level or higher.

OFFICIAL RATING

Again, it isn’t entirely straightforward when it comes to the official ratings of the past winners because as the race has grown in stature so has the calibre of its runners. Last years winner was rated 105 and it pays to follow those at the top of the ratings, see Free Wind as the highest rated.

KEY TRENDS

Top two in the market

Previous Group winner

CONCLUSION

Aristia bids to go one better than her second last year and is the third highest rated in the field. She has however never won a race better than Listed. Sea Silk Road is still lightly raced for a four-year-old but she’d need to put her last two runs behind her to feature here. Toskana Belle is having her first start for Roger Varian since moving over from Europe and brings some nice Group form. She is an unknown quantity but could be very useful. FREE WIND would be the pick for Clarehaven. They opted to supplement her for this and despite her not being seen for close to 10 months, she’s got the best form in the book for a trainer who’s won this race twice in the last four years.

The Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Middleton Stakes over one mile two furlongs is towards the pinnacle of the Pattern pyramid which denotes the best contests, it forms part of the second of four categories; Listed, Group 3, Group 2 and Group 1.

This race is restricted to 4yo plus fillies and mares Given its Pattern prestige, it is part of a broader strategy to keep such horses racing rather than connections choosing to retire them for breeding.

Ed Chamberlain and the team from ITV will be having a close at them in the Parade Ring, so why not join them.

KNAVESMIRE TIP

A strong handicap on paper, with the vote going to ASSESSMENT The lightly-raced son of Kingman returned from a spell on the sidelines with a comfortable success at Kempton on his handicap bow and a 6lb rise is unlikely to halt his progression. Cruyff Turn won this contest 12 months ago off a 1lb higher mark and wasn’t disgraced behind the reopposing Northern Express in the Thirsk Hunt Cup Both are respected, while others worth noting include Blue For You, Croupier and Toshizou.

A TROPHY TO DISPLAY

Arguably the most coveted piece of silverware in Flat racing, the Derby trophy was specially commissioned by Epsom Downs Racecourse as a perpetual memento for the owner of the winning horse

Containing the names of past winners dating back to the inaugural running of The Derby in 1780, the trophy was created by equine sculptor Charlie Langton and inspired by the unique undulations of Epsom Downs. Three silver horses are depicted galloping over a sweeping, circular base, Langton having drawn the idea from watching the horses descend through Tattenham Corner.

The Betfred Derby is regarded in some quarters, as ‘the greatest Flat race in the world’ and is one of five British Classics, alongside the 1000 and 2000 Guineas, The Betfred Oaks and The Betfred St Leger. It is a race that has had an enormous impact on the Thoroughbred breed, with the bloodlines of many of the most successful racehorses in history established from its winners.

This year’s renewal will see Frankie Dettori ride in the race for the final time. He won his first Betfred Derby in 2007 at the 15th attempt, when he partnered Authorized, one of now twelve colts to have done the Dante- Derby double The Italian pilot won it again in 2015 and once described the race as ‘the pinnacle of our sport“

The trophy is on display on the ground floor of the Ebor Stand this afternoon.

DANTE: THE HOPE OF THE NORTH

Foaled on March 7, 1942, he was by Nearco out of Rosy Legend and an inauspicious visit to the ring saw him fail to make his 3,500 gns reserve, and no buyer responded to a sale by public advertisement. So he was put into training with Matt Peacock by his owner, Sir Eric Ohlson. We welcome members of the Ohlson family with us today.

Dante enjoyed a blemish-free juvenile season, a winning debut at Stockton in April and five further successes including the Coventry Stakes and Middle Park Stakes.

Come 1945, a successful pipe opener and he was aimed at the 2000 Guineas but preparations were interrupted when the horse’s left eye clouded over just before the first classic. Consequently sent to Newmarket short of gallop, Dante experienced his first defeat when Lord Astor’s Court Martial got the better of him by a neck. Some onlookers felt that had the challenge come on Dante’s right, he would have responded quicker.

Legendary punter and founder of Timeform, Phil Bull, was not deterred and as the Middleham star drifted to 10/1, he went into the ring, backing Dante to win £14,000!

Matt Peacock Dante wins the Derby, June 1945
50

Due to WWII the 1945 Derby was run at Newmarket’s July Course. Dante was set to reoppose Court Martial. Meyrick Good, writing in the Sporting Life commented “I expect to see Dante, Midas, and Court Martial draw away from the field and for the winner I select Dante.”

It was to prove an inspired summary as Dante became Middleham’s first Derby winner since Pretender won the 1869 renewal. Midas finished second, with Court Martial in third.

His victory was celebrated in Middleham, where the church bells toiled, a Dante Ball held and winning jockey Nevett carried shoulder-high through the streets.

Dante was then targeted for the St Leger, to be run here on the Knavesmire that September, he was rated an even-money favourite. However, rumours were that all was not well and they proved correct as on August 25 he was withdrawn. Chamossaire, won at York in his absence.

The records show that the eye problems which had blighted the challenge for the 2000 Guineas had returned and indeed worsened. Dante was virtually blind in both eyes and so retired to stand at Theakston Stud, Bedale.

Dante had a successful if comparatively brief stud career. Among his high-class winners were Darius (2000 Guineas and Eclipse Stakes), Carrozza (Oaks), and Discorea (Irish Oaks). This great horse died at Theakston in 1956. In all, Dante won eight of his nine starts.

Dante remains the last Middleham, indeed last northern trained, horse to win the Derby. The success of Permian from Mark Johnston’s Stable in the town in the 2017 Dante as well as the presence Dear My Friend and Killybegs Warrior from the same Kingsley House base, as well as Liberty Lane for Karl Burke from across the town, today offers encouragement that a new chapter in the sporting history of Middleham is being written.

So Dante was reared in Yorkshire – lived there all his life – and retired to stud at Theakston Stud, Bedale.

Based on an original article by John Scanlon, first published in the Kingsley Klarion.

Where does the race name come from? FIRST WINNER?

Only two Northern-trained horses have won the Betfred Derby; Pretender way back in 1869 and Dante. Both trained at Middleham, the latter by Matt Peacock to Classic success in 1945.

WHAT HOODOO?

Only one horse beaten at York has ever won the Betfred Derby, Workforce, second behind Cape Blanco in 2010, became a Blue Riband winner and so a hoodoo breaker

OH LA LATO BE SURE!

After sealing glory here in 2014 The Grey Gatsby landed the Prix du Jockey Club (or French Derby) at Chantilly The following year saw Jack Hobbs second on the Knavesmire, but a Classic winner at the Curragh, with Hurricane Lane, the 2021 winner at York, following in his classic footsteps when winning the St Leger

£192,250 After supplementary entry

Bald Eagle justified favouritism in 1958 for Newmarket trainer Sir Cecil Boyd-Rochfort and his jockey Harry Carr

Why is it considered a Classic Trial?

Simples - since 1958, eleven York winners have won at Epsom; St Paddy (1960), Shirley Heights (1978), Shahrastani (1986), Reference Point (1987), Erhaab (1994), Benny The Dip (1997), North Light (2004), Motivator (2005), Authorized (2007), Golden Horn (2015) & Desert Crown (2022).

They drew a blank in the first 40 years and all bar Aidan O’Brien, still have; the Ballydoyle maestro scored with Saratoga Springs (1998), Septimus (2006), Black Bear Island (2009) then Cape Blanco (2010). The honour of the Emerald Isle rests between Continuous from that County Tipperary yard, or White Birch who hails from the County Cork, in the care of John Joseph Murphy.

LUCK OF THE IRISH?

ANY NEAR MISSES?

Rheingold was beaten just inches by Roberto in 1972 and the Millennium winner Sakhee was only 150 yards from Derby victory before being headed late on by Sinndar The 2008 renewal saw Tartan Bearer go down by just half a length to New Approach and Libertarian was fast finishing for his runners up berth.

Tartan Bearer

LEADING TRAINERS?

The late Sir Henry Cecil holds the record for having won this race seven times – Approval (1970), Lyphard’s Wish (1979), Hello Gorgeous (1980), Simply Great (1982), Claude Monet (1984), Reference Point (1987) and Tenby (1993). Sir Michael Stoute reduced the defecit by one with Desert Crown and in doing so picked up his fifth win, will he go one closer today with Passenger?

LEADING RIDER?

How do local trainers fare?

Poorly, until the turn of this decade However, Libertarian broke the County’s duck for trainer Elaine Burke in 2013. The Grey Gatsby made it two in a row for the White Rose courtesy of Hambleton based Kevin Ryan in 2014.

It was back to winning ways in 2017, when the Mark Johnston trained Permian prevailed and Thunderous gave the yard a third success in 2020.

WHO ARE THE SPONSORS?

Established in the year 1998, Al Basti Equiworld has, within a short span of time, become the pioneers in equine industry to Middle East and expanded across the globe They have always recommended and introduced the best quality natural products which have had a very good response from the industry and are the distributors for leading companies such as Baileys Horse Feeds and Foran Equine Products.

This year, Dear My Friend & Killybegs Warrior represents KIingsley House, while Liberty Lane is saddled by Karl Burke from across the town.

The late Sir Henry Cecil Pat Eddery The late Pat Eddery managed six wins whilst Ryan Moore has the best record of the current crop with three, today partnering Continuous. Frankie Dettori would join him on that mark were Epictetus to win this afternoon. Karl Burke

BIG RACE TRENDS

THE AL BASTI EQUIWORLD DUBAI DANTE STAKES (GROUP 2)

PREVIOUS WINNERS - LAST TEN RUNNINGS

INTRODUCTION

Arguably the leading trial for next month’s Betfred Derby is this afternoon’s Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Dante Stakes and it is usually won by a very smart middle-distance performer The roll of honour includes North Light (2004), Motivator (2005), Authorized (2007), Golden Horn (2015) & Desert Crown (2022) who have all followed up at Epsom having won here. Roaring Lion went onto win four Group 1’s and 2021 champion Hurricane Lane won the St Leger, so it’s a good guide for the season!

BETTING

It looks as though there may be a bit of a resurgence of those toward the front of the betting. Hurricane Lane obliged at 5/1 while Desert Crown was sent off 7/2JF. Previously those at a slightly bigger price had been the way to go, Libertarian caused a major shock when landing the spoils at 33/1 back in 2013 but he is the only victor in those last ten years to have gone off bigger than 12/1.

TRAINERS

Of the trainers with runners this afternoon, Sir Michael Stoute has the best record having saddled seven winners, his most recent victory coming last year with Desert Crown. However, the Johnston yard and the Gosden one also have strong records with five winners apiece, so be sure to keep an eye on their runners this afternoon.

CONCLUSION

JUVENILE FORM

Only a handful of the previous winners had Pattern form as a two-year-old so perhaps proven form at this level is not as important as it once was. However, despite Telecaster winning this race in 2019, he was only the third winner in the last decade who did not run as a two-year-old, which suggests that the later maturing types tend to struggle in this contest.

RECENT FORM

Contesting a Group race as a prep run for this race often pays dividends – a pattern worth bearing in mind when going through this year’s field. It also seems best to side with those arriving in form, with those who had finished in the top three and ran to form last time out favoured by the trends.

KEY TRENDS

Trained by Sir Michael Stoute Group Form as two-year-old Single figure SPs

This year’s Dante looks as though it could be one to remember, with 12 runners taking to the field. Aidan O’Brien sends Continuous, who doesn’t have a Derby entry, but could well be supplemented should he win this. Passenger will be hoping to charter an almost identical route to last years victor Desert Crown but will need to overcome inexperience, despite his trainer’s excellent record. EPICTETUS was successful in the Derby trial at Epsom and has some excellent form at Group level as a two-year-old. He could well give Frankie a headache if he wins here, for who he rides in the Betfred Derby.

KNAVESMIRE TIP

WHITE BIRCH is an interesting contender and should not be underestimated after his Ballysax triumph, where he travelled strongly and battled on well, despite being hampered late on With connections hopeful he has more to come, he could surprise these, although it is a competitive renewal. Passenger was impressive in the Wood Ditton and has to be respected, while Continuous and Flying Honours have form at a higher level and can also get involved in the finish.

See page 78 for conditions of this race.

RACE DESCRIPTION

Distance: 5f

Race Type: Listed

Prize Money: £70,000

Age: 3

Stalls: Farside

This Listed race aims to give a competitive run to high quality 3yo sprinters who may struggle against their elders this early in the season, in Pattern races, yet are already beyond most handicaps.

A European Breeders’ Fund race, meaning that all the horse’s sires are registered in Europe with the EBF The scheme is to encourage the best in bloodstock breeding in Europe.

If judgement of form has failed you so far today, it might be time to just try your favourite colours; it has been known to pay a dividend in such races.

KNAVESMIRE TIP

Arguably an unlucky second in the Norfolk at Royal Ascot last summer, Walbank appeals as the type to kick on this season. Rocket Rodney joins him in setting the standard on official ratings and should also be capable of mounting a serious challenge, but the vote goes to SILENT WORDS. Having made a successful debut at Newcastle in November, Kevin Ryan’s filly made a promising colt pull out all the stops at Hamilton on her reappearance and has scope for much more improvement.

KNAVESMIRE TIP

A very interesting contest but marginal preference is for CUBAN THUNDER, who caught the eye when second on his debut at Newmarket With the benefit of that experience, the son of Profitable could be hard to stop, although similar comments apply to Emperor Of Rome. Aidan O’Brien’s colt also hit the crossbar on his racecourse bow and the application of cheekpieces may help his chances. The well-bred Impressive Act is the pick of the newcomers, ahead of Varden and Air Force One
