Welcome A very warm welcome back to the Knavesmire for the third day of our 2022 season. It is such a pleasure for everyone at York to be able to welcome back racegoers to enjoy this Dante Festival, for the first time since 2019! York Racecourse is committed to supporting the sport and to attracting the best horses to race for us all to enjoy. As an indication of this commitment, prize money over the three days of the Dante Festival is £1.35m, meaning a six-figure increase on 2019, with every race worth £20,000 or more. All eight of the Pattern grade contests see a significant increase on their 2019 values, up to record levels. This can only be achieved through the support of racegoers and of our sponsors. Many thanks to Paddy Power, Knights Solicitors, Oaks Farm, Yorkshire Equine Practice, Longines Irish Champion Weekend and the European Breeders’ Fund, for their valuable backing. As the picture for Epsom perhaps has become clearer after Emily Upjohn won the Tattersalls Musidora and Desert Crown The Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Dante; attention today switches to the stayers. We are delighted to host leg one of the QIPCO British Champions Series for this division which will take in the “Cup” races at all the major racing festivals in the months ahead, including the Weatherbys Hamilton Lonsdale Cup, back here at the Ebor Festival. More of those quality thoroughbreds will go to post in today’s seven races, headlined by those star stayers in our feature contest. None more celebrated than Stradivarius, already a five-time winner in Group races on the Knavesmire including this particular contest in both 2018 and 2019. Victory for Bjorn Nielsen’s chestnut this afternoon would see him join Copper Knight and Dakota Gold as the most prolific scorers at York. The likes of Thunderous from the Middleham stable of Mark Johnston or Group One winner, Search for a Song, who has traveled from County Kildare for Dermot Weld, will be hoping this is their day. Some young pretenders have emerged including Tashkhan for Brian Ellison; it will be fascinating to see them all in opposition. The generous support of new sponsors, Paddy Power, has been rewarded with a great looking renewal Notebooks or iPad to the ready wherever you look today as some highly regarded fillies undertake the Knights Solicitors EBF Marygate Stakes and Oaks Farm Stables Stakes, a pair Listed contests. Today is the first of a series of “ITM Fridays” at York as the team from the Emerald Isle will be with us at our later Friday fixtures this season, to find out more about buying a horse in Ireland as well as plans for Longines Irish Champions Weekend in September visit their stand, by the Parade Ring. You’ll see how thrilled the various Owners are to have winners or just runners at York today. If you want to find out more about you could join them, then talk to any of the syndicates who are offering shares in horses, from their places on the ground floor of the Ebor Stand. You can even see your prospective future horse in the Parade Ring from 12.30pm. The team have been busy preparing for your return, the Champagne Pavilion has been given a fresh new look, whilst on the ground floor of the Knavesmire Stand the renamed 1731 Pie Shop both celebrates the year when racing started on the Knavesmire and serves a range of home-made goodies. If we are blessed with the weather than both of the County Stand Garden and Roberto Village Bar offer a speed of service with nearby outside seating. A final welcome to our newly appointed equine ambassador, Remy. Now aged thirteen, the retired racehorse will be better known to fans of the sport as Goldream, the dual Group One winning sprinter for Robert Cowell. Now part of the team at New Beginnings, a local charity that helps horses with new careers once their racing days have drawn to a close, he is based with some pals in the Clocktower Enclosure today. Finally, as our sporting season gets underway, we wish the very best to York City as they look to continue theirs tomorrow. Come on the Minstermen. I hope you have a thoroughly enjoyable and successful day.

A RACECOURSE FOR ALL

We want the racecourse to offer both a welcome and an enjoyable day to all our racegoers and in delivering that we recognise that some may need additional assistance from us.

The first thing to say, please just ask for help, if the team don’t have an instant answer, then they know someone who will. The team in the Racecourse Reception (behind the Ebor Stand) act as the link to the rest of the team, as needed. FAQS Is there disabled and blue badge parking? Yes, I hope you found it. All our car parks have designated spaces near their front row. Can I get help with getting to/from the car park, taxi rank or shuttle buses? Yes, there is a complimentary buggy service to all these points, ask at racecourse reception or next time you arrive just call 01904 620911. Thank you for your patience as the buggies can only transfer 4 people at a time and it’s a big site. Can I bring a wheelchair? Yes, if you need to; but we also offer complimentary hire, again from Racecourse Reception (see told you they were the hub). As we hope you’ll appreciate, there are only so many wheelchairs on site, if you need to reserve in advance then call 01904 620911. Can I bring somebody to help? Yes, we appreciate that will come in various forms, we hope our “carer comes free” scheme is a help, before your next visit check it out online at www.yorkracecourse.co.uk or just ask the team today. Are there wheelchair viewing platforms? Yes, in all stand side area and Stands - easiest thing to do is to ask our Stewards, though a map is available from, you guessed it, Racecourse Reception. Please use these in the spirit intended, with carers being prepared to step aside to allow space for those who need the view the most. What about toilets and are they part of the Radar scheme? Yes they are, all the permanent toilet blocks have a disabled capability, please ask for directions or check that map from you know where. Are their wheelchair height food and drink counters? Yes there are but not as many as we’d like, please ask a member of the team to assist you. Wheelchair height betting? Yes, there are some Tote counters set at a reduced height though a better plan might be to use the courier service that operates in areas such as the main Champagne Lawns; the Tote team themselves are always willing to help. There was one more thing? Please ask, we value your feedback so we can keep improving in this area.

YESTERDAYS RACING CTION THE AL BASTI EQUIWORLD DUBAI MIDDLETON STAKES (GROUP 2)

THE AL BASTI EQUIWORLD DUBAI DANTE STAKES (GROUP 2)

Favourites have had a remarkably good record in the race, so it was a surprise for many as Lilac Road carved her way through the pack to collar long time leader Aristia.

Desert Crown ran out an emphatic winner of the Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Dante. You couldn’t help but be impressed by the manner in which he won and Sir Michael Stoute could have another superstar on his hands.

Sean Levey broke well from the stalls and found himself with an easy lead aboard the Hannon trained filly. She had been a buzzy juvenile but has clearly settled over the summer and it allowed Sean to set steady fractions. Thunder Kiss was sent off the favourite for Ger Lyons and Colin Keane and the striking grey sat in midfield along with the first of the Michael Stoute runners, Ville De Grace. All of them turned into the straight with a chance but one by one the jockeys settled into the drive position to try and get their mounts to challenge the long-time leader. For a long way down the straight it looked as though Ger Lyons was going to claim the prize with the daughter of Night Of Thunder however she failed to find that extra gear. One horse that didn’t lack that killer turn of foot was Lilac Road, the four-year-old was galvanised by Tom Marquand to weave her way through the field in quite taking style. The step up in trip from her previous run clearly benefited her and she looked as though she may get even further in time. After the race Marquand said: “She’s learning still but if she continues on this path, she’s clearly a filly with a lot of talent.”

There was a lot of talk before the race about Desert Crown and there was already a tremendous amount of pressure on the son of Nathaniel. However, if there was any pressure, he and Richard Kingscote certainly didn’t feel it and despite being a tad green, he could be something special. White Wolf took a keen hold and took them along at a good pace. Market principle El Bodegon was prominent for much of the race but like a few of those up with the early gallop, felt the early exertions at the business end. Royal Patronage had been well fancied throughout the course of the day and went off joint favourite with Desert Crown. He too was very keen in the early stages and got a little warm before the race, so his effort can be marked up. He and Desert Crown began to pull clear of the field coming into the final two furlongs and it will be fascinating if they reoppose in the Cazoo Epsom Derby. Aiden O’Brien has been having a fine time of things in the various trials for the Cazoo Epsom Derby however his runner Bluegrass couldn’t find that extra gear to go with Royal Patronage and Desert Crown, he may appreciate further in time and could go follow the 2021 winner Hurrican Lane, with a tilt at the Cazoo St Leger. Desert Crown could clearly be a very special horse and we can’t wait to see where he goes next.

WHERE CAN I PLACE A B T

There are various points and different ways to bet here at York. 1. Place a bet with the tote. 2. You can go to the betting ring. 3. Use a William Hill Retail SP Betting Shop. With over 300 tote betting points located around the course, there is always one nearby. The main betting ring is situated in front of the Knavesmire Stand with an additional ring in Course Enclosure and sometimes a third set of bookies on Bustardthorpe Lawn. There are three William Hill Retail SP betting shops at York; one at the southern end of the stands, the second on the ground floor of the Knavesmire Stand and the third being the refurbished shop on the ground floor of the Melrose Stand. In addition, racegoers in the Clocktower Enclosure will find a William Hill Retail SP facility underneath the clock tower. PLACING YOUR BET WITH A BOOKMAKER Shop around for the best odds against your selection. When you have decided on where to place your bet, state the number of your chosen horse and the stake, for example “number 4, £2 win”. Listen to the bookmaker repeat the number of the horse and the stake to his/ her clerk and hand your stake to the bookmaker. You will then be given an itemised receipt that gives details of the bet and shows potential winnings. You should keep this ticket safe. COLLECTING YOUR WINNINGS If your selection wins (or, in the case of a place bet, is placed), hand the ticket back to the bookmaker for settlement. NEVER destroy your ticket until after the “Weighed In” announcement has been made. There may still be a stewards enquiry and the first past the post, or placed horses, may be disqualified. On rare occasions even the horse coming fourth has been awarded the race. You may bet with confidence with any bookmaker as they have all been approved by the Administration Of Gambling On Tracks Limited, which administers the betting rings at each of Britain’s 59 racecourses. The AGT also offers a full late pay service, in case a bookmaker leaves the course before you have collected your winnings. Late Pay Claims should be sent to Administration Of Gambling On Tracks Limited, 3a, Kings Hall, Parsons Green, St Ives, Cambs, PE27 4WY.

WAYS TO BET STRAIGHT EACH WAY

Win Only A bookmaker taking each way bets will display the terms on which he/ she accepts such bets on the top of his/her board. This is a bet for your selection to win or be placed. In conjunction with The RCA, the bookmakers have introduced standard each-way terms. Bookmakers will provide these terms, or better, when offering each-way betting. • Fewer than 3 runners - all on to win • 3 or 4 runners – all on to win. Where a bookmaker wishes to depart from this default position he may offer place terms. This must be at 1/5 odds a place 1,2 • 5 – 7 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds a place 1,2 • 8 or more runners – 1/5 odds a place 1,2,3 • Handicaps with 12 to 15 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds a place 1,2,3 • Handicaps with 16 to 21 runners (inclusive) – 1/5 odds a place 1,2,3,4 • Handicaps with 22 or more runners – 1/4 odds a place 1,2,3,4 AWAY BETTING Many bookmakers will also take bets at the other race meetings today. They offer a comprehensive service, including bets settled TAX FREE at Starting Price (S.P.).

BETTING WITHOUT THE FAVOURITE

At reduced odds you can back a horse and collect if it wins or runs second to the horse nominated by the bookmaker as favourite.

STRAIGHT FORECAST

Name the first and second in the correct order.

In the unlikely event of a dispute with a bookmaker, please call upon the assistance of the AGT Betting Ring Manager. Their office is located near the Theakston Bar to the South of the main Betting Ring.

Official BHA Ratings The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part usually in three races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. Racing Post Standard Times is an independent assessment based on how long it should take a 90-rated horse to win on Good To Firm ground at York. Race tactics, rail movements, and wind direction are amongst the many factors to also affect the time for each specific race. Non-runner Ground - The Trainer states the ground is not suitable for this horse, the official going has changed since the time of declaration. Vet - The Trainer states the horse is subject to a Veterinary Certificate. Self Certificate - The trainer has advised the authorities that the horse is not able to race today.

Five Furlongs (1,000 metres) See page 77 for conditions of this race.

RACE DESCRIPTION We start with a Listed race over the shortest trip in UK racing, five furlongs. It is part of the Pattern pyramid which denotes the best contests, forming part of the second tier of four categories; Listed, Group 3, Group 2 and Group 1. This race is for those that are registered with the European Breeders’ Fund. This means that the horses sire is registered in Europe with the EBF, which is a scheme to encourage the best in bloodstock breeding in Europe. Strong performers will be watched closely as they progress, previous year’s winners have gone on to win the Queen Mary Stakes at Royal Ascot. This early in their career, your selection comes down to a choice of the two “p”s, pedigree or pin.

LAST YEAR’S RACE Winner: NYMPHADORA Trainer: Andrew Balding Jockey: Jason Watson Age/Weight: 2-8-12 Runners: 13 SP: 13/2 Built on a promising debut at Newmarket to win nicely under Jason Watson. She raced near side and led the group two furlongs from home before drawing away readily.

KNAVESMIRE TIP In a wide-open contest the marginal preference is for MIAMI GIRL, who created a big impression when winning easily on her debut over 5f at Newmarket at the beginning of the month. The daughter of Cotai Glory is entitled to improve for that experience and she should be capable of making her mark at this level. Yahsat confirmed her debut promise when winning well at Pontefract last time and she may prove to be the main threat to the selection. Carmela and Daytona Lady are others with strong form claims, while Pillow Talk also makes the shortlist.

2nd Race 2.25 The Oaks Farm Stables Fillies’ Stakes (Registered as the Michael Seely Memorial Fillies’ Stakes) (Listed Race)

Distance: Race Type: Prize Money: Age: Stalls:

1m Listed £65,000 3f Inside Rail

About One Mile (1,500 metres)

See page 77 for conditions of this race.

RACE DESCRIPTION Our second Listed race of the day, and remember Listed status gives an indication of the top-drawer capability of the runners. In the spirit of creating opportunities for different types of horse, this race has been planned especially to cater for three-year-old only fillies. Those with top class trophies already in the cupboard must shoulder more weight, see how Honey Sweet is so burdened.. An in form jockey could be the best way of spotting the eventual winner, check the stats table.

LAST YEAR’S RACE Winner: PRIMO BACIO Trainer: Ed Walker Jockey: Andrea Atzeni Age/Weight: 3-9-0 Runners: 8 SP: 14/1 After being slowing away from the stalls, she took a keen hold under Andrea Atzeni. He managed to settle her at the back and made smooth headway to win going away.

KNAVESMIRE TIP GIRL ON FILM looked a smart prospect when making a winning debut at Newmarket in August before not disgracing herself on the Rowley Mile in the Rockfel behind more experienced fillies. The step up to a mile is likely to see her progress and a flatter track may also bring about improvement. Grande Dame won nicely on her debut at Ascot and she is likely to enter the reckoning, while others to note include Perfect News, Fonteyn and Rolling The Dice.

1m 2f Handicap 81-100 £35,000 4+ Inside Rail

See page 77 for conditions of this race.

RACE DESCRIPTION This is the first handicap of the afternoon. Such races are designed for close competition with the handicapper as the independent assessor who rates horses on past performance seeking to get them crossing the line together, by handing out differing weights. The best, on past performance, will be the highest rated horse, Belloccio here and so will carry most weight. Maybe visit the sponsors website to show you where the money is down.

LAST YEAR’S RACE Winner: SURREY PRIDE Trainer: Joseph Tuite Jockey: James Doyle Age/Weight:4-8-11 Runners: 12 SP: 5/1 Surrey Pride clearly appreciated the return to a sounder surface and relished the good gallop. Held up in midfield under James Doyle, he gave an inch perfect ride to win by just under two lengths.

KNAVESMIRE TIP Rogue Bear has run a pair of excellent races to finish third in the Lincoln and the Spring Cup. He has been keen on both of those starts and will have to settle better over this trip, so perhaps BELLOCCIO is a better option. David Menuisier’s grey struggled in Group races last term, but showed the benefit of the drop into handicap company when winning at Kempton on his return and could defy a 5lb higher mark. Parachute may benefit from first-time blinkers, while Skilled Warrior is interesting on his debut for Grant Tuer.

The Paddy Power Yorkshire Cup

FACT FILE: WHEN DID THE RACE BEGIN?

Distance One mile, five furlongs abt 188yds (2,770 metres)

Prize money £175,000

It had been intended to launch a new two mile handicap in 1926, but racing was cancelled because of the General Strike and so it began 12 months later. After the war it became a Conditions race and in 1966 the distance was reduced to one mile and six furlongs. In 1971 it achieved Group 2 status.

WHY IS IT SPECIAL?

The Paddy Power Yorkshire Cup is the first of the major stayers’ Cup events, what you might term the “Grand Slam”. It pits the established stars against the young pretenders. The status of the race is such that it forms the opening leg of the Long Distance Championship category of the QIPCO British Champions Series.

Ardross

In this case anyway, as Ardross, winner in 1981 and 1982, was the first thoroughbred to claim two Paddy Power Yorkshire Cups. The previous winner, Stradivarius, make history and became only the second back-to-back winner of the race in 2018 and 2019.

Stradivarius

LIGHTNING STRIKES TWICE

This afternoon Stradivarius returns to try and make it a hattrick.

A POT OF GOLD? NOT SO FAST

Incredibly, given Irish success in almost every sphere of modern horse racing, this race has always eluded raiders from the Emerald Isle. Southern France pushed Stradivarius all the way in 2019, but apart from that, their best effort in the last decade was from the then Thomas Carmody-trained Royal Diamond who finished third to Glen’s Diamond in 2013. Perhaps Dermot Weld’s runner this afternoon - Search For A Song - can break the succession of British-trained winners?

LEADING TRAINERS?

Saeed bin Suroor

The legendary Cecil Boyd-Rochfort bagged seven victories in a career that spanned four decades – The Scout II (1931), Kingstone (1945), Premonition (1954), Dickens (1960), Sagacity (1962), Raise You Ten (1964), and Apprentice (1965). Saeed bin Suroor and Sir Michael Stoute both have trained five winners, after the latter’s Royal success of Dartmouth in 2017. Clareheaven stables, operated by John & Thady Gosden, has two successes in the race thanks to the great Stradivarius, and will be looking for a third this afternoon.

LEADING RIDER? Lester Piggott has eight wins - Pandofell (1961), Aunt Edith (1966), Knockroe (1972), Bruni (1976), Bright Finish (1977), Noble Saint (1980) and Ardross (1981, 1982). Of the current crop Frankie Dettori leads the way with six winners – Arzanni (1991), Kayf Tara (2000), Marienbard (2001), Mamool (2003) & Stradivarius (2018 & 2019). Today he will be hoping he can reduce the deficit to just one, with the star stayer Stradivarius.

HOW DO YORKSHIRE STABLES FIGURE?

Lester Piggott

Plenty of local winners down the years with both the Peacock and Elsey families making their mark. Middleham-based Harry Peacock and his son Dick both saddled a winner, as did the legendary Malton trainer Captain Charles Elsey, followed later by his son Bill. In more modern times Zindabad landed the spoils for Middleham trainer Mark Johnston in 2002 as did Glen’s Diamond for 3000 man, Richard Fahey in 2013, whilst Clever Cookie kept the Yorkshire end up with victory for Peter Niven. But there could not be a more local winner than Templestow who took the very first running in 1927, for he carried the colours of Colonel Hugh Stobart, a former Steward at York who lived at nearby Middlethorpe Hall, now a popular resting place for owners and racegoers alike. The Charlie & Mark Johnstontrained Thunderous along with the Brian Ellison-trained Tashkhan carry Yorkshire’s flag today.

INTRODUCTION The Paddy Power Yorkshire Cup, part of the British Champions Series, is widely recognised as the first major stayers’ race of the season. TRAINERS The victory of Spanish Mission twelve months ago gave his trainer Andrew Balding a first win in the race. John Gosden saddled the Stradivarius double in 2019 and 2018, with his top stayer returning today. RECENT FORM Only three of the last ten winners had previously raced twice during the current season suggesting that it is probably best to side with fresher horses here. Two of those had made just the one seasonal appearance whilst the other six were making their seasonal debuts in the race. An equally strong trend is that all barring the 2010 winner, Manifest, had been previous winners at least of a Group 3. In fact, Millenary, Sergeant Cecil and Stradivarius (twice), had already been successful at Group 1 level prior to winning here.

OFFICIAL RATING In terms of official ratings, the benchmark for winners appears to be 110. The only horse in the last decade to win this race with a rating lower than that was Glen’s Diamond, in 2013, so it seems best to focus our attention on the higher-rated horses. BETTING With an average winning SP of just under 5/1 and a record of five winning favourites, it is fair to say that the market has proved an excellent guide in the recent years. Glen’s Diamond caused a shock in 2013 when winning at 25/1 but the other nine winners were all sent off at single-figure prices. KEY TRENDS Focus on those towards the head of the betting Oppose those yet to win a Group race Oppose runners officially rated less than 110

CONCLUSION Thunderous would have to become only the first since Glen’s Diamond to win the race with a rating of less than 110. Mark Johnston won the race back in 2002 and even after taking out his new joint ownership with son Charlie, Thunderous still looks to have his work cut out. Those travelling across the Irish sea aren’t famed for their success here and Search For A Song would have to put in an extremely high class performance to win today. This brings us on nicely onto Stradivarius, who despite being an obvious choice, does look the one to beat. He isn’t getting any younger but is still the one they must get passed. Statistics supplied by an independent analyst. All trends are ten year based unless stated. 56

RACE DESCRIPTION Also part of the Pattern race pyramid is the Group 2 Paddy Power Yorkshire Cup. The race is over the comparatively long distance for a flat race of a mile and three quarters, and like long distance human athletes, the stamina required to win tends to develop with age so this race is for horses aged four and older. Identifying a successful stayer could make for a profitable summer, so maybe listen carefully to the experts on the Punter’s Panel before racing in the Winner’s Enclosure.

KNAVESMIRE TIP Seeking to claim his sixth win from six runs at York, all eyes will be on seven-time Group 1 winner STRADIVARIUS, who tends to go well fresh and can perform on various types of ground. That being said, Search For A Song defeated him at Ascot in the Long Distance Cup in 2020, only to be outdone by Trueshan in the final stages. She has won a Group 3 at the Curragh since, but may want slightly further to flourish nowadays. Tashkhan was far from disgraced during his last outing, but his track record at York isn’t as impressive.

KNAVESMIRE TIP Charlie Appleby appears to have a strong hand with WILD CRUSADE and New Comedy and preference is for the former, who recorded a comfortable success at Kempton last month. He conquered subsequent Listed scorer Nahanni at the same venue in January and the son of Dubawi looks likely to be a Pattern performer further down the line. Speycaster (third) could reverse the form of his Nottingham run with Al Qareem (winner) now stepped up in distance for his second run of the season, while Andrew Balding’s Lady Labelle should not be dismissed.

6th Race 4.45 The Yorkshire Equine Practice Stakes About Seven Furlongs (1,400 metres)

7f Handicap 66-85 £20,000 3+ Farside

See page 77 for conditions of this race.

RACE DESCRIPTION This handicap presents another tricky challenge for the betting public. So pit your wits against the handicapper – if you need some help look for C (has won at York) or D (has won over this distance) against the horse’s name, such as Challet today. If an apprentice jockey partners a horse they can claim a reduction in weight to balance their relative lack of experience, see how Muntadab benefits with Saffie Johnson claiming 3lb.

LAST YEAR’S RACE Winner: BOARDMAN Trainer: Tim Easterby Jockey: David Allan Age/Weight: 5-9-9 Runners: 18 SP: 7/2F Boardman made short work of his rivals after being turned out quickly and running under a penalty. He did run into some traffic problem but was going much the best and victory never looked in doubt.

KNAVESMIRE TIP Challet was a winner over course and distance last season and, after going close at Ripon on his latest start, should make a bold bid. However, MOSSBAWN shaped well when third at Redcar on his return last month and, with that run under his belt, can reverse form with the winner of that race, Il Bandito, who still warrants plenty of respect on just his third start for James Horton. Recent Wetherby scorer Admirality has run well over C&D in the past and cannot be ruled out either.

Five Furlongs (1,000 metres) See page 77 for conditions of this race.

RACE DESCRIPTION We end the Dante Festival with a final handicap. “Offer a chance for everyone” is a good maxim for those planning races and in this contest the upper rating of 80 means that these are still quality horses but they won’t have their spotlight stolen by a real superstar. Now might be a good time to consult the Press selections board on the end of the Melrose Stand, at least you can share any blame. Good luck, we hope you can go into the weekend ahead of the bookies!

LAST YEAR’S RACE Winner: BEDFORD FLYER Trainer: Les Eyre Jockey: Lewis Edmunds Age/Weight: 3-9-2 Runners: 13 SP: 6/1 Bedford Flyer was all speed in our finale last year and fairly flew out of the stalls into an early lead. KNAVESMIRE TIP Although Hellomydarlin must concede weight all round, George Boughey’s filly, who has run well at this venue in the past, makes plenty of appeal dropped in class with first-time cheekpieces equipped. Meredif improved in each of her three starts as a juvenile and is interesting on her seasonal/handicap debut, but any value could lie with JOSIES KID. Encouragingly, the Ardad gelding won his only previous visit here in October last year and a close-up third at Goodwood two weeks ago shows him to be arriving in top form.
