HANDICAPS

Once a horse’s ability has been assessed by the Official BHA Handicapper it is given an official rating. This is an assessment that determines how much weight it shall carry compared to the other runners. In simple terms a horse rated 100 carries 2lbs less than a horse rated 102. A rating over 130 is well above average and the winner of the Cheltenham Gold Cup is normally rated over 160 Most handicap races have an upper rating limit to encourage runners of similar ability to take part and make a competitive race e.g 0-110, and a 28lb weight-range

HURDLE RACES

One Fit Padded Hurdle: The ‘One Fit’ design is a modified hurdle frame with a custom fitting close-cell foam pad replacing the traditional birch. The hurdle was developed with the objective of reducing both the faller rate and the risk of injury as the result of a fall. They are 3ft high and placed in the ground at an attractive angle to encourage horses to jump them fluently

At Perth there are five flights of Hurdles on the course Eight are jumped in a two mile race, nine in a race over two miles and five furlongs and eleven in a race over three miles.

STEEPLE CHASE

Steeplechase fences are made from hardwood frames stuffed tightly with birch When making a fence the birch is packed in at a height of approximately 6ft, then cut down to a maximum height of 4ft 6”. There are five ‘plain fences’ on the course at Perth and two ‘open ditches’ An Open Ditch is the same height as a plain fence but has a small ditch in front of the fence to make them a bigger test for the horse and rider

STAR RATINGS EXPLAINED

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:

HHHHH Selected to win the race

HHHHI Good chance of being placed.

HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims.

HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope

HIIII Can be given little or no chance.

At Perth there are two open ditches on the course, the first fence in the straight and the first down the back straight. Perth is one of the last remaining racecourses to have a Water Jump, this is situated in front of the main Grandstand and is much smaller than the other fences, with a 6ft wide water jump behind a small birch fence. There are eight steeplechase fences on the course Twelve are jumped in a race over two miles, fifteen over two miles and four furlongs and nineteen in races over three miles.

WEIGHT FOR AGE RACES

These races are designed to provide a fair and competitive contest before a horse is allocated a weight, according to his ability, to run in a Handicap These races are therefore normally for young horses aged from 3 to 5-y-o. As a 5-y-o is deemed to be stronger than a 3-y-o he/she will be made a to carry a little more weight. Once a horse has won a weight for age race he/she will be asked to carry a ‘penalty’; this is normally an additional 7lbs. Once a horse has won or run three times in a Weight for Age race he can be assessed and given a weight in a Handicap Race.

HORSE WELFARE

Racing’s top priority is the safety and welfare of horse and rider People join the racing industry because they share a genuine love for horses. Like most sports, racing carries risks, however, we work to ensure that no death or injury occurs which could have been prevented. Horses have the right to a decent and fulfilling life, both during their racing career and afterwards. We are committed to minimising risks, dealing quickly and humanely with injuries, and maintaining the highest possible quality of life for the animals in our care. It is now standard practice for screens to be erected round any horse receiving veterinary attention on the course This does not reflect the severity of the injury but allows the vet some privacy in which to administer treatment and provides the horse with a calm environment in which to make a recovery Please therefore do not assume the worst if you see screens erected around a fallen horse

THE ROYAL SCOTS DRAGOON GUARDS (CARABINIERS AND GREYS)

Scotland’s senior and only regular cavalry regiment became The Royal Scots Dragoon Guards in 1971 from the union of two famous regiments: The 3rd Carabiniers, constituted from 3rd and 6th Dragoon Guards in 1922 and The Royal Scots Greys (2nd Dragoons), originally formed by General Sir Tam Dalyell at The Binns in 1678

Since World War II armour has replaced horses but it is the Cavalry spirit of the past that provides the inspiration for the present and the future, whatever it may hold. In 2008 the Regiment deployed to Afghanistan and Iraq, in March 2011 it returned to Afghanistan for another tour and went back there again from August 2013 to February 2014. It then retrained to become a Light Cavalry Regiment. After spending 20 years in Fallingbostel, in June 2015 the Regiment moved to Leuchars, Fife which is now its permanent base and it is now part of 7 Light Mechanised Brigade Combat Team. In June 2015 the Regiment took part in a number of events to mark the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Waterloo, a battle in which the Regiment became famous for “The Charge of the Greys” and when Sergeant Ewart captured the Imperial Eagle of the French 45th Regiment and which is on display in the Regimental Museum in Edinburgh Castle.

In 2017 the Regiment deployed soldiers to Kenya, the UAE and Australia. At the end of that year it deployed as a Regiment to support the United Nations Force in Cyprus for 6 months. In July 2018 Her Majesty The Queen, Colonel in Chief presented the Regiment a new Standard at a parade in Leuchars after which a Squadron went to the UAE for further training. More recently in 2019 the Regiment deployed to Poland with NATO before returning to the UK for Op RESCRIPT, the Army assistance during the COVID-19 pandemic. After celebrating 50 years since the amalgamation the Regiment deployed to Mali in 2022 with the United Nations and is currently held at very high readiness as part of the NATO Response Force.

The Regiment is proud of its musical history The skills of the Pipes and Drums were acknowledged in 2009 with the classical Brit Award Album of the Year for ‘Spirit of the Glen – Journey’, mostly recorded while they were on operations in Iraq. In 2016 the Pipes and Drums undertook a ten week tour of Australia and New Zealand, performing at 47 venues.

When not training for or deploying on operations, the Regiment, which recruits throughout Scotland, is also proud to promote equitation and other sporting activities. There is a long tradition of racing in the Regiment and it is delighted to be associated with Perth racecourse through the sponsorship of a prestigious Hunter Chase Today’s Challenge Cup dates from 1970 with the race being run for periods at Lanark, Hamilton, Ayr and Kelso before moving to Perth in 2019.

SERIOUS EGO again shaped better than the result when eighth at Market Rasen on his latest outing, left poorly placed, so he could be ready to get his head back in front from only 1lb above his last winning mark. Agilulf ran well after an absence when third at Musselbugh last time and can make another bold bid, with Don’t Look Back completing the shortlist.
