How to Read the Racecard

Star Ratings Explained

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:

★★★★★ Selected to win the race

★★★★✩ Good chance of being placed.

★★★✩✩ By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims.

★★✩✩✩ Unlikely to win but not totally without hope.

★✩✩✩✩ Can be given little or no chance.

Official BHA Ratings Explained

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability

The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

The details of Owner, Trainer, Breeder, Sponsor & Colours are highlighted on the card. If you are unsure about reading the card, remember to ask at a tote window for advice.

You must be 18 or over to place a bet

You may be asked to provide proof of your age when placing a bet. If you cannot produce this your bet will not be accepted

Race Description

Novice races tend to be for younger horses that are still learning their way over hurdles and allow them to race against each other before graduating up the ranks. Horses are classed as a novice if they have yet to win a race, under the respective code, prior to the official start of the season, towards the end of April. This particular two mile and three furlongs novices’ hurdle is for horses aged four-years-old and upwards which have not won more than three hurdle races.

Race Description

This is a two mile and three furlongs handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 110. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 170.

KING OF THE ROAD has shot up the weights following his brace at Market Rasen but it’s unlikely that he’s done improving yet and the hat-trick beckons for this 5-y-o. Sergeant Wilson needs to bounce back following a couple of rather low-key efforts but he can be expected to do just that now back on better ground and he is second choice ahead of Centara.

Race Description

This is the second division of Race 1. Some races can often prove very popular with owners and trainers and as a result more horses are declared to run than the official safety limit allows for. To avoid horses being denied a run, which is obviously disappointing for connections, the British Horseracing Authority allows the race to be split into two divisions, with each contest carrying identical race conditions.

Horse Welfare

Horse welfare is a priority at Taunton Racecourse At every meeting there are 3 specially qualified equine veterinary surgeons appointed to look after the welfare of the horses in action. One vet is present at the start of each race and during the race follows the runners in a vehicle Horses can be attended to in the same time as the Paramedic Teams responsible for treating injured jockeys.

A second vet follows the action from the stands and coordinates the required response to any incidents. In addition, throughout the meeting a close check is kept on all horses, especially those returning after a race It is standard policy that in the event of a horse requiring veterinary treatment whilst on site, screens will be erected around the horse It is designed to afford the vet and horse some privacy. Please do not assume the worst.

Race Description

Our penultimate race is a two mile, five and a half furlongs handicap steeple chase that has been designed for five-year-olds and upwards which are rated from 0 to 100. In most National Hunt handicaps, there is a minimum weight of 10st so any horse whose official rating would allocate them less than that still has to shoulder that burden. The horses that fall into this category are said to be racing from ‘out of the handicap’ – usually a distinct disadvantage.

Race Description

Our finale is a two mile half a furlong handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 105.

PLAY SMARTER

One of just two 4-y-o’s in this line-up, GLORIOUS LION has offered plenty to work on in juvenile hurdles and, with the switch to a much sounder surface rating a definite plus now his sights are set on handicaps, Harry Denham’s charge is fancied to be seen in an even better light. Winterwatch is shaping up well and is feared along with last year’s winner Phoenix Risen.
