Ayr Racecard - Wednesday 22nd May

Page 1

Welcome to Ayr Racecourse, and whether you are a first time racegoer or a seasoned racing enthusiast, I hope you have an enjoyable experience with us. We are delighted to welcome for the first time Fitzdares, the World’s Finest Bookmakers to Ayr today

Our feature race, and our first Class 1 Listed race of the Flat season, the Fitzdares British EBF Rothesay Stakes over the 1m2f distance, has attracted an impressive array of quality fillies and mares. Past winners have gone on to achieve Group 1 Success, including Nezwah who won the Pretty Polly stakes at the Curragh and last year’s winner Al Husn, who impressively won the Group 1 Nassau Stakes at Goodwood. This year’s field is similarly impeccably bred, so keep your eye on the future to see where today’s winner appears.

I’d like to thank our owners and trainers for choosing to run their horses here today. I wish all connections the very best of luck and sincerely hope you have an enjoyable and successful day, I would also wish to take this opportunity to thank Fitzdares for sponsoring the card today.

Our next Saturday raceday is on 22 June which will showcase the Class 1 Listed Land O’Burns 5f sprint for fillies and mares, and also a certain Martin Kemp from a wellknown 80’s band as our feature entertainment that evening.

In Western House, Paul Skully will be providing additional entertainment from 5.30pm onwards - please feel to pop down and enjoy.

I would also like to thank our racegoers for attending. I wish you all an enjoyable and successful visit to Ayr and a safe journey home.

Horses which have not raced will not have a form rating, as may some horses which have raced but not recently in Britain or their performances to-date have not yet merited a rating.

HOW TO BET

1. Pick your Racehorse, look around for the best odds on course, try to proffer the correct stake money for your wager

2. Ask the Bookmaker for your bet by naming the horse. The bookmaker will repeat your bet to his clerk, correct bookmaker if he makes a mistake and receive your Betting Ticket as a receipt for your bet.

3. If your horse wins, give your Betting Ticket to the bookmaker, check your winnings.

4. Check with the bookmaker when placing a bet, the Place Terms. Place Betting, not all on course bookmakers accept each way bets, ie. for a win or a place.

5. In the unlikely event of a dispute after adhering to this procedure, the bookmaker will tell the punter to approach the Ring Official, who will advise you as to your rights.

6. Some course bookmakers have minimum stakes.e.g. £1, £5, £10 but small backers are catered for in the racecourse Betting Shops.

EACH WAY BETTING

In conjunction with The RCA, the bookmakers have introduced standard each-way terms. Bookmakers will provide these terms, or better, when offering each-way betting.

• Fewer than 3 runners - all on to win

• 3 or 4 runners – 1/5 odds a place 1,2

• 5 – 7 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds a place 1,2

• 8 or more runners – 1/5 odds a place 1,2,3

• Handicaps with 12 to 15 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds a place 1,2,3

• Handicaps with 16 to 21 runners (inclusive) – 1/5 odds a place 1,2,3,4

• Handicaps with 22 or more runners – 1/4 odds a place 1,2,3,4

All bookmakers must display on their boards whether they are betting each way or to win only

SHY HI BYE was headed in the dying strides when touched off at Newcastle on her final start of last season. William Haggas’ filly looks the type to do better with that experience under her belt and she is taken to make a winning reappearance. The biggest threat may emerge from Mutamanni, who offered something to work with on his fourth-placed debut at Yarmouth earlier in the month. Strike Rate should fare better on this drop in trip.

NAZCA recorded a sixth victory on the all-weather when landing the spoils at Newcastle in March. Although the five-year-old has struggled to make an impact on turf racing off lower marks in the past, his improvement since last summer can be attributed to the drop to 6f. The Oasis Dream gelding could follow up here, possibly at the main expense of Doon The Glen, who arrives on the back of a close-up second at Hamilton last Friday. Warminster is another to consider. totewin: Nazca toteeachway: Doon The Glen

The French-born handler trains from the historic Coombelands Stables at Pulborough in East Sussex, once the base of Classic winning trainer Guy Harwood who trained, amongst others, Dancing Brave, Ela Mana Mou, Warning, To Agori Mou, Kalaglow and Rousillon. Menusier sends last May’s Longchamp Group 1 fourth (of 10) Heartache Tonight for the £47,000 Rothesay Stakes at 3.20 today with Ayr’s leading jockey Paul Mulrennan booked to add a little local knowledge to the plan to land a Listed prize which is building up quite a reputation for throwing up future Group 1 winners. The trainer’s excellent recent form continued with a double at Newbury on Friday and after Ayr this afternoon, he saddles 3 more runners at Kempton this evening.

TODAY’S JOCKEY TO WATCH - JIM CROWLEY

Shadwell Stud’s retained rider travels north for two rides here this afternoon, his latest foray to Ayrshire coming exactly a year since he won today’s Rothesay Stakes in the old Hamdan Al Maktoum colours on subsequent Group 1 Nassau Stakes winner Al Husn. Crowley rides Shadwell’s second time out juvenile Mutamanni in the blue and white Shadwell silks in our opening 6 furlongs maiden at 2.20 before taking an outside ride for Jessie Harrington in the big race at 3.20, Snowcapped. The 4 year-old won a maiden and a handicap last spring before finding Listed and Group 3 company too tough but the trainer’s horses have been in great form and the yard had a Listed winner at Navan on Saturday with Birdman.

SADDLING

All horses must be saddled in the Pre-Parade Ring and taken to the Parade Ring before leaving for the start.

Heartache Tonight will need to build on her reappearance fourth in the Dahlia Stakes at Newmarket earlier this month and, despite being the highest-rated contender, she could be worth taking on. The returning MISTRAL STAR made rapid progress towards the end of last season’s campaign, as evidenced by a fine second in a Listed event in France, and she could take this en-route to bigger things. Snowcapped and Red Danielle are also worth a second look. totewin: Mistral Star

RACE RESULT DISTANCES

2ND 3RD 4TH TIME

KELPIE GREY has won four of his last five starts and has another major chance under a 5lb penalty for an all-the-way success over 7f here eight days ago. If anything, this is a slightly weaker race, which goes some way to combatting the return to racing over a mile. There are dangers aplenty, though, with the likes of Nikovo and Jackhammer both players from competitive marks, while Trais Fluors would be a threat if on a going day.

SOUND REASON may have been expensive to follow since his most recent success, but he finds himself on an attractive mark as a result and looks worth another chance on these terms. Rated 86 at his best for his previous yard, a current assessment of 70 is too appealing to ignore as he makes just his third appearance for David O’Meara. Several others hold solid claims, with Paddy’s Day, Match Play and Impressor all suggested as shortlist material.

Jean Baptiste has filled the runner-up spot the last twice, including over track and trip when Glasses Up was a place behind, and he should remain competitive off an unchanged mark compared to his most recent second at Newcastle. However, the vote goes to BORN RULER, who returned from a 223-day break to hit the crossbar at Lingfield, despite being too free. The drop from 1m4f looks a good move and, with Luke Morris back on board, he might be the one to beat.

Recent C&D winner Pol Roger is another to note.

COVERT LEGEND: Following its run on 18/5/2024 it was reported that the horse was denied a clear run late-on.

Probable S.P’s: 7-2 Covert Legend (GB), 4-1 Braes of Doune (GB), 11-2 Khathak (GB), 13-2 Balqaa (GB), 12-1 Capuchinero (GB), Concert Boy (IRE), 14-1 Paco’s Pride (GB), 18-1 Retirement Beckons (GB), 20-1 Golden Valour (GB)

BRAES OF DOUNE made a pleasing return to action when denied by just under a length at Newcastle in January and he is only 1lb higher for that effort. Jim Goldie’s six-year-old remains on a workable mark and can go one better. The main danger might be Balqaa, who has been thereabouts at this level on each of her last three starts and should go well again, while Retirement Beckons is another to keep an eye on.

totewin: Braes Of Doune
