WELCOME TO CORAL HERON STAKES EVENING ME WELCOMES YOU

This is an incredibly proud day for everyone at Coral as we celebrate the 50th running of our flagship sponsorship of the Coral-Eclipse Stakes, and we would like to thank you all for joining us at Sandown Park for our Golden Anniversary.

This is the longest running Group race sponsorship in the world, and we are delighted to announce an extension to this historic association that will take us through to 2030, further cementing Coral’s position as the most passionate and committed sponsor in British racing

The Coral-Eclipse is one of the greatest Flat races in the world, with a roll of honour that includes many of the best racehorses to have graced the turf, and we are delighted to have partnered with The Jockey Club and Sandown Park to raise the prize money for the race to a new high of £1 million, a prize money pot in keeping with a race of this stature.

This year’s renewal features yet another stellar line-up and we would like to thank all the connections of the runners for declaring for the race and wish them the very best of luck

Have a great time, enjoy the top-class racing and please stick around afterwards for our Golden Anniversary party.

‘To win’ is for your horse to come first.

‘Each-way’ is for your horse to come first or to be placed. It’s two bets, so ‘£2 each-way’ = £4 total bet.

Decide the amount – or stake – you are comfortable to bet.

Place your bet. There are different places to bet on course; The Tote, racecourse bookmakers, betting shop or online. Each option offers a different experience.

Collect. Once ‘Weighed-in’ has been announced, present your betting slip and collect any winnings.

1. FORM EXPERTVIEW

ECLIPSE 1764 - 1789

Whichever horse wins the 2025 running of the Group 1 Coral-Eclipse, will be a direct descendent to ECLIPSE, foaled in 1764.

Perhaps the greatest racehorse of all time, and after whom the race is named, he raced a total of 18 times resulting in a victory on each occasion.

He was already a 5-y-o when he contested his first race at Epsom Downs in 1769 and with no horse able to compete with him, he was retired to stud after just three seasons. The lineage chart, shown here, depicts the impact ECLIPSE has had on the thoroughbred breeding lines and, it is estimated, 95% of thoroughbreds can be traced back to this great horse. From this year’s Grand National winner, NICK ROCKETT, to the 2024 Longine World’s Best Racehorse and 2024 Coral-Eclipse winner, CITY OF TROY, and the winners of each of the four Classics run in Great Britain and France and the three run in Ireland to date in 2025, his DNA is present.

The event was part of the year-long campaign to mark Sandown Park’s 150th anniversary, with the goal of raising awareness and funds for the Community Fund for Elmbridge The Community Fund is managed by the Surrey Community Foundation and was launched this year as part of Sandown Park Racecourse’s 150th anniversary celebrations to provide a vital, long-term source of funding for local charities and community groups in the Elmbridge area.

A core team from Sandown Park and The Jockey Club walked day and night starting Saturday 28th June, ensuring laps were finished round the clock until the 150thcircuitwascompleted.The150thlapwascompletedat12PMonWednesday 2nd July in the refreshing drizzle after walking in 30 degrees across the challenge! The five-day challenge has a different theme each day:

Saturday 28th June – Community Day

Sunday 29th June – The Jockey Club Friends & Family Day

· Monday 30th June – Horseracing Industry Day

Tuesday 1st July – The Jockey Club Work & Walk Day

Wednesday 2nd July – Esher & Final Laps Day

On Monday a number of British racing’s stakeholders joined the walk, ranging from jockeys and racing broadcasters to sponsors and charity partners.

Sarah Drabwell, General Manager of Sandown Park, said: “We’ve been blown away by the support we’ve received, not only the local community but the wider racing family in helping us complete this challenge. It’s been an exceptionally hot fewdaysandwe’rereallygratefultoeveryonewhohastakenthetimetojoinuson the walk, donate and help us spread the word about the Community Fund, from which local charities will benefit by receiving grants. We’re passionate about the role our racecourse plays in the local community and what we can give back and our 150th anniversary has provided a great opportunity to demonstrate that.

Nick Luck recorded his hugely popular podcast from the Esher track on Monday and said: “Sandown Park has been very close to my heart pretty much my entire life. When I was a child it was always considered a treat to go to Sandown – this was the special place you came for what was always going to be a memorable day. Sandown is just the perfect place to watch top class horseracing, whether it’s Flat or Jump racing It’s been ahead of its time in many respects and unique in its layout and the rhythm of a raceday. I love this place and hope it flourishes for another century and a half.”

FAMILY FESTIVAL FRIDAY

50 NOT OUT – CELEBRATING A HALF-CENTURY OF CORAL’S ECLIPSE SPONSORSHIP

This year marks the 50th running of the Eclipse at Sandown Park under the sponsorship of Coral.Thisisthelongest-runningGroupracesponsorshiptobefoundanywhereintheworld.

Back when Coral’s sponsorship began in 1976, Britain was undergoing a legendary long, hot summer and the bestselling car was the Mk2 Ford Escort. James Callaghan had recently taken over as Prime Minister from Harold Wilson and the charts were topped by 10cc’s I’m Not In Love as 10 runners lined up in what was then known as the ‘Joe Coral Eclipse Stakes’ on Saturday 3rd July.

The sponsorship began with a controversial result, when first past the post by a comfortable two length was French challenger Trepan. However, the four-year-old was subsequently disqualified after failing a post-race drugs test (his Royal Ascot win in the Prince Of Wales’s Stakes was similarly annulled), which meant that the first winner of a Coral-sponsored Eclipse was the Henry Cecil-trained Wollow. The late, great Newmarketbased trainer had previously won the contest in 1969 with Wolver Hollow and went on to enjoy a further two victories under Coral’s sponsorship courtesy of Gunner B (1978) and Twice Over (2010).

Ela Mana Mou’s triumph in 1980 began what would be a glorious decade for the 10-furlong highlight, with the Dick Hern-trained colt subsequently rated the best older horse in Europe that year

In 1984, there was a winner of historic proportions when Sadler’s Wells prevailed. The final ofthe quintet of wins in the Eclipse for his legendary trainerVincent O’Brien, the son of Northern Dancer went on to be crowned champion sire in the UK & Ireland a record 14 times with his progeny including Derby winner Galileo, himself a 12-times champion sire.

Other outstanding winners of the 1980s included the amazing filly Pebbles (1985), one of only three females to win, plus the outstanding Dancing Brave (1986), dual winner Mtoto (1987 & 1988) and Derby winner Nashwan (1989).

Godolphin’s emergence as a global racing powerhouse in the 1990s included significant success in the Coral-Eclipse with dual victor Halling (1995 & 1996) while Daylami (1998) led home a then unprecedented Group One 1-2-3 for the Maktoum family’s operation as he scored from stablemates Faithful Son and Central Park.

The 21st century began as it was to continue with a success in 2000 for an Aidan O’Brientrained runner in the shape of “Iron Horse” Giant’s Causeway. O’Brien has gone on to win the Coral-Eclipse a record eight times in total with Hawk Wing (2002), Oratorio (2005), Mount Nelson (2008), So You Think (2011), St Mark’s Basilica (2021), Paddington (2023) and City of Troy (2024) adding to his tally

Sea The Stars (2009) is the best Coral-Eclipse winner seen so far this century. Arriving at Sandown Park following wins in the 2000 Guineas and Derby, theJohn Oxx-trained son of Cape Cross saw off Rip Van Winkle by a length in the Coral-Eclipse and went on to win the Juddmonte International, Irish Champion Stakes and Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe to mark himself out as one of the all-time greats.

KERDOS ran a cracker considering he got loose beforehand and raced in the unfavoured far-side group in the King Charles III Stakes at Royal Ascot last month, so he makes plenty of appeal now dropping back in grade. She’s Quality seems sure to be on the premises once again, with the likeable Balmoral Lady another to note in what looks an up-to-scratch renewal of the Coral Charge

A good-quality handicap with the vote going to GREEK ORDER, who not only proved all his ability remains intact on first start for a new yard when fourth in the Royal Hunt Cup but shaped well into the bargain. Treasure Time has been off the track for 9 months but is in excellent hands and has probably still got more to offer at 4, while Classic Encounter did well under the circumstances at York and remains one to be positive about.

OMBUDSMAN burst onto the Group 1 scene with his impressive win in the Prince of Wales’s at Royal Ascot and a second success at the highest level will likely arrive here if showing up in similar form. Fellow 4-y-o Sosie already has 2 Group 1 wins to his name this season and can provide the chief threat ahead of Delacroix, who had nothing go right at Epsom and Ryan Moore keeps the faith.

CORAL-ECLIPSE ANNIVERSARIES

This year sees the 128th running of today’s feature race, the Coral-Eclipse It’s Group 1 status, the long-standing support from its sponsor and position in the racing calendar have seen it draw some of the biggest names from across the racing world andthisyear wecelebrate afewof those anniversaries

5 Years –Ghaiyyath(2020)

The 2020 renewal was a Coral-Eclipse for the history books; not only because the race was run behind closed doors due to the Covid-19 pandemic but it also featured one of the most highly anticipated clashes of the season WondermareEnablereturnedtodefendher2019title,butitwasGodolphin’sGhaiyyath whostoletheshowwithabrilliantperformance Knownforhisrelentlessgallop, thesonofDubawiwasdroppingbackintriphavingwontheGroup1Coronation Cup a month prior but confirmed his place as one of the top middle-distance performers with both his Coral-Eclipse and Juddmonte International wins Ghaiyyath retired to stand for Darley at the end of 2020 having won nine of his thirteen starts; with four Group 1 victories and the title of Cartier Horse of the Year

10 Years –Golden Horn (2015)

In the 127-year history of the Coral-Eclipse, only eleven horses can lay claim to also having won The Derby in the same season, but Golden Horn is one of the names on that illustrious list. Trained by John Gosden and owned by Anthony Oppenheimer, Golden Horn went into the Coral-Eclipse undefeated in his four starts, including both the Dante and the Derby. A select field of five went to post, with Golden Horn the only three-year-old taking on his elders. Regular jockey Frankie Dettori was bold and got out in front to make all in a decisive victory – a performance that earned him a career best rating of 130. Later that season, Golden Horn would add the Prix de L’Arc De Triomphe to his CV before retiring to stud He has since enjoyed success as a dual-purpose sire, with Grade 1 winners at the Cheltenham Festival and his first Group 1 flat winner arriving in 2025 with Trawlerman’s Gold Cup triumph at Royal Ascot.

Ghaiyyath

20 Years –Oratorio (2005)

In 2005, Oratorio became the first three-year-old in seven years to win the Coral-Eclipse, producing a tenacious performance that still holds up as one of the most hard-earned victories in the race’s modern history. Trained by Aidan O’Brien and ridden by Kieren Fallon, Oratorio arrived at Sandown on the back of a strong second in the St James’s Palace Stakes and was stepping up to face older rivals for the first time. In a high-class field of seven went to post, including Derby Motivator and North Light, the previous year’s Epsom hero, Fallon settled Oratorio just off the pace before producing him with a determined run inside the final furlong. In a thrilling finish, the Ballydoyle colt wore down Motivator to claim Group 1 glory by ½ length It was a first Eclipse win for O’Brien and a breakthrough at ten furlongs for Oratorio, who went on to confirm his top-class credentials later that season with victory in the Irish Champion Stakes before retiring to stud

40 Years –Pebbles (1985)

Although a Classic winner as a three-year-old in 1984 when she landed the 1000 Guineas, the Clive Brittain-trained Pebbles took her form to even greater heights in 1985 She began her four-year-old season at Sandown Park in April when landingtheTrusthouseForteMileandarrivedattheCoral-Eclipseasa7-2chance Partnered by Steve Cauthen, Pebbles made history by coming home two lengths clear of Rainbow Quest and becoming the first filly to win the Coral-Eclipse. She was then kept fresh for an autumn campaign that yielded two of her most famous performance - a stunning victory in the Champion Stakes, followed by a landmark international triumph in the Breeders’ Cup Turf at Aqueduct in New York That win made her the first British-trained horse to score at the Breeders’ Cup, securing Pebbles’ legacy as one of the greatest mares to grace the turf

THE CORAL-ECLIPSE

RACE DESCRIPTION: The Group 1 Coral-Eclipse is one of the standout middledistance contests of the British Flat season, run over one mile and two furlong here. First staged in 1886 and named after the legendary Eclipse, it’s the first top-level race of the season where the classic generation takes on their elders, often producing a fascinating clash of age and form. The race has been sponsored by Coral since 1976 and attracts some of the most high profile horses in training. It’s roll of honour includes greats like Giant’s Causeway, Sea The Stars and Enable.

PLAY SMARTER

YABHER pulled clearofthe restwiththewinnerwhen going down narrowlyon his first run overthis trip at Redcar and, still on an attractive mark following a 4lb nudge, he is taken to strike for his in-form yard Jupiter Ammon chased home a potentially very useful (if not smart) colt at Windsor and he is feared most with improvement likely now handicapping. Dissident and Keble Spirit are also appealing types, while Love You Back could have a part to play, too.

RACEHORSE & JOCKEY WELFARE

The welfare of the sport’s equine and human participants is paramount to British Horseracing All racehorses competing in Britain are stabled at the premises of trainers who are licensed by The British Horseracing Authority The standards demanded by The BHA of licensed racehorse trainers far exceed those prescribed by animal welfare legislation. The British Horseracing Authority similarly licenses every racecourse, setting high standards for the racing surface and all parts of the course used by competitors, both human and equine. BHA Officials ensure that racecourses delivers these standards. In addition Sandown Park Racecourse employs three veterinary surgeons, whose sole responsibility it is to provide care to the horses throughout their time at the racecourse In the event of an incident on the racecourse, any horse affected will receive immediate treatment from the racecourse’s veterinary team. Qualified paramedics and doctors are also on hand in the case of any incident involving a jockey If any incident occurs during a race it is routine practice for screens to be erected around the horse or jockey receiving treatment. This is to allow the veterinary or medical personnel to make a safe and accurate diagnosis and so that they may perform any treatment in a private and calm environment. If necessary, horses and riders will be transported from the course to receive further treatment at the nearest equine hospital or Accident & Emergency hospital
