THE JOCKEY CLUB WELCOMES YOU

It is a great pleasure to welcome you all to Sandown Park for a summer's afternoon of racing. The feature race today is the Listed British Stallion Studs EBF Star Stakes, which features a high-quality field of talented two-year-old fillies. The race is sponsored by the European Breeders Fund, one of over 600 flat races a year run for EBF qualified horses, all carrying enhanced prize money. We would like to thank the EBF for their generous contribution to this afternoon's contest. Our second race this afternoon is the Martin Densham Memorial EBF Maiden Stakes, which remembers the late Martin Densham, a great friend and supporter of Sandown Park for many years. Martin was a generous and popular member of the betting ring, initiating the Imperial Cup bonus and devoting much time and money to charity. His family business, White Sunderland, continues to hold a rails bookmaking position here. Part of the enjoyment of a day at Sandown Park is the food and drink and we have a number of outlets inside and outside the Grandstand for you to choose from. If you would like to enhance your experience, our Equus restaurant is open for walk-ins and offers a delicious à la carte menu with fantastic views across the course. We wish all the horses and their connections the best of luck today and hope that you have a wonderful time with us here at Sandown Park. PLAY SMARTER

LIBERTINE BELLE was progressing nicely before a lesser run at Newmarket but she’s been allowed more of a break since, so she’s worth chancing to get back to winning ways in a tightly-knit contest. The thriving Buy Me Back is an obvious danger in her hat-trick bid, while Newyorkstateofmind can’t be ignored in his current mood.

THE MARTIN DENSHAM MEMORIAL EBF MAIDEN STAKES

Martin Densham was a most popular fixture at Sandown Park for more than 30 years. His father, Pat, founded the family Bookmakers firm of SUNDERLANDS in the mid-1940s and the name continues to be represented on the racecourses to this day. Martin joined the family business in about 1977 and was responsible for the long lasting and popular Sunderland Bonus attached to the winner of the Imperial Cup run at Sandown Park in March of each year, if that horse could win any race at the Cheltenham Festival the following week. This initiative adds significant interest and betting activity to the historic Imperial Cup and has been paid out three times during its history and is now a huge £100,000 supported by its current sponsor. Martin embraced a distinctive style operating from the senior pitch ‘on the Rails’ at most racecourses. He was a larger than life character much loved by his clients and was a very generous host when entertaining clients who became firm and loyal friends. Prior to becoming an old fashioned credit clients’ and racecourse bookmaker, Martin had a versatile and varied career from briefly being a male model while living in Australia, through to living in Bordeaux when he had entered the wine trade, an activity he much enjoyed, and then, finally, the gregarious and ever popular bookmaker who added colour and conviviality to the horse racing and sports betting scene. Martin, for over 30 years, had been a leading member of the Charity Guild of the Nineteen Lubricators which had been formed in the late 1930s by members of the oil industry. The winning connections of the Martin Densham Memorial race will receive a perpetual trophy commissioned by the Guild of the Nineteen Lubricators of a solid silver sculpture of a Sunderland Flying Boat, an aircraft flown by Pat Densham during the Second World War, and the inspiration for the business name of Sunderlands Bookmakers. Martin’s widow, Jan, will present the trophy to the winning connections

PLAY SMARTER

Several of the newcomers are appealing, but DUKEDOM shaped like a ready-made future winner when runner-up on debut over this C&D and he earns the vote. The Dubawi colt didn’t get the rub of the green on that occasion and he is open to plenty of improvement. King’s Guard should make his presence felt, but bigger threats may be posed by likely-looking debutants Majalh and Thesis.

PLAY SMARTER

ANDALEEP has failed to fire this season, but as a result he’s dropped below his last winning mark and returning to the scene of his last 2 wins, he could be interesting at a price. Sweet Reward has also been in top form over this C&D and is an obvious threat, along with Civil Law.

PLAY SMARTER

MOWALEDA hails from a talented family and looks the sort to do better now handicapping for her new stable having caught the eye at Kempton last time, so she looks the way to go. Arenas del Tiempo should remain competitive following a 4lb rise for Brighton, while Lady Rockstar is not one to write off now tackling handicap company for the first time given her yard/pedigree.
