PLACE A BET ON-COURSE WITH AND RACECOURSE BOOKMANERS

HOW TO PLACE A BET WITH A RACECOURSE BOOKMAKER WAYS TO BET
WIN ONLY The most common form of bet. You win if your horse is first past the post.
Example: £5 win at 8/1 would return £45 (8 x £5 = £40 + £5 stake)
EACH WAY Backing a horse to win or be placed. This doubles your bet – for example: £5 each way = £5 to win and £5 for a place = £10 total stake.
STANDARD EACH WAY TERMS
In conjunction with The RCA, the bookmakers have introduced standard each-way terms. Bookmakers will provide these terms, or better, when offering each-way betting.
• Fewer than 3 runners - all on to win
• 3 or 4 runners – 1/5 odds a place 1,2
• 5 – 7 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds a place 1,2
• 8 or more runners – 1/5 odds a place 1,2,3
• Handicaps with 12 to 15 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds a place 1,2,3
• Handicaps with 16 to 21 runners (inclusive) – 1/5 odds a place 1,2,3,4
• Handicaps with 22 or more runners – 1/4 odds a place 1,2,3,4
Some bookmakers also offer ‘betting without the favourite’, where you can back your selection at reduced odds to either win or finish second to the horse nominated by the bookmaker as favourite. You may bet with confidence with any bookmaker on course as they operate with Administration Of Gambling On Tracks Ltd. (AGT) approval.
In the unlikely event of a dispute with a bookmaker, please call upon the assistance of the AGT Betting Ring Manager, who can be found on the ground floor of the Grandstand Enclosure.
The AGT also offers a ‘late pay’ service in case the bookmaker leaves the course before you have collected your winnings.
Late pay claims should be sent to: AGT, 3A Kings Hall, Parsons Green, St Ives, Cambridgeshire, PE27 4WY
PLACING A BET
Experiencing the buzz of the betting ring may be a little daunting at first, but you will soon find it is very easy to place a bet. Here are some guidelines for racegoers to follow:
1. Each bookmaker will be offering slightly different prices, so shop around for the best odds against your selection.
2. Call your bet clearly to the bookmaker by stating the name and / or number of your chosen horse and the stake.
3. Listen to the bookmaker repeat your bet to his / her clerk and correct him immediately if any details are called wrongly
4. Make sure you obtain a ticket from the bookmaker and keep it safe.
5. If your selection wins, hand the ticket back to the bookmaker for settlement. Never destroy or dispose of your ticket until after the “Weighed in” announcement has been made. Betting with the bookmaker is tax-free. Deductions are made only if a horse is withdrawn after the betting market has been formed.
Please check the minimum stake accepted by each bookmaker on his display board. Some bookmakers do not take sums under £5, especially in the main betting ring, but there will be others who are happy to accept £2 bets. Please tender the correct change when possible.

TODAY’S TOP TIPS
DEMOCRACY DILEMMA was not disgraced in a Listed race on dirt at Jebel Ali in February and that followed an encouraging third in a competitive handicap at Meydan. The four-yearold was successful over C&D when last competing in the UK and he looks to have plenty in his favour from stall two here. Copper Knight has dropped to an eyecatching mark and the veteran should not be written off, while Clearpoint and Roman Dragon are two others to note.
WIN: DEMOCRACY DILEMMA
DANGER: COPPER KINGHT
PASSING PHASE caught the eye when filling third place on his racecourse bow over 5f at the Curragh last month and the son of Lope De Vega could be hard to beat with the benefit of that experience. Rashabar and Bretton Wood also showed plenty of promise on their introductions in races that have both worked out very well, while any market support for The Flying Seagull would have to be noted.
WIN: PASSING PHASE
DANGER: RASHABAR
NEVER SO BRAVE chased home a pair of subsequent Group 1 winners on his two starts as a juvenile and confirmed that promise when winning easily on his return over 7f at Thirsk last month. With that in mind, the son of No Nay Never merits the utmost respect on his handicap debut here. Dashing Darcey has to be of interest following his narrow defeat at Newbury recently, while Grey Cuban and Nellie Leylax also merit places on the shortlist.
WIN:
DANGER: DASHING DARCEY
GOD’S WINDOW reached the frame in the Group 1 Futurity at Doncaster before making it two wins out of three starts in a minor novice event on his reappearance at Nottingham. John & Thady Gosden’s Dubawi colt should relish this step up in trip and, with further improvement highly likely, he is the one to beat. Jayarebe was a smooth winner of the Feilden at Newmarket and has to be taken very seriously, despite his penalty, while Bracken’s Laugh is a player after numbering Capulet among his victims at Chelmsford.
WIN: GOD’S WINDOW
DANGER: JAYAREBE
Last year’s Chester Vase hero ARREST comes into this contest on the back of an underwhelming return to action when only seventh in the John Porter at Newbury. That run was arguably too bad to be true and he is a class act on his day, so he is well worth another chance. Point Lonsdale, who landed the Huxley Stakes at this meeting 12 months ago, is the top-rated in the field and has his first attempt at the distance, while Deauville Legend tries first-time blinkers and is another to note.
WIN: ARREST
DANGER: POINT LONSDALE
Lingfield scorer Inspiritus appreciated the removal of the hood when posting a career-best performance in late March. Roger Varian’s gelding warrants respect off a 5lb higher mark and this switch to turf shouldn’t prevent another bold bid. However, fellow last-time-out scorer PEARL EYE may prove to be the better handicapped of the pair after winning a shade cosily at Pontefract and the four-year-old could be tough to beat if coping with the quick turnaround. Loyal Touch and Baryshnikov also enter the reckoning.
WIN: PEARL EYE
DANGER: INSPIRITUS
CONTACTO proved a different proposition on his handicap bow when scooting away from his rivals at Doncaster. A 9lb hike in the ratings for that easy victory looks far from insurmountable and Andrew Balding’s colt is taken to follow up. The biggest threat may emerge from the progressive Arch Legend, who isn’t taken lightly in his quest to land a hat-trick, especially considering he is 4lb well-in. Glistening Nights is a potential improver upped further in distance.
WIN: CONTACTO
DANGER: ARCH LEGEND

The National Gallery Collection
The National Gallery is our nation’s treasure box: home to one of the world’s greatest collections of art. In honour of its 200th anniversary and being their official partner, Boodles designers have taken inspiration from paintings in the gallery to create ‘The National Gallery Collection’. The suites within the collection take inspiration from artistic techniques: Play of Light, Brushstrokes, Perspective, and the theme of Motherhood within the gallery.

Play of Light
Gallen-Kallela’s depiction of Lake Keitele inspired the Play of Light ‘Lake Keitele’ pieces, with Boodles designers mimicking the water’s zigzag pattern using marquise cut diamonds. Monet’s ‘Water-Lillies, Setting Sun’ influenced a lively palette of pink tourmaline and peridot in the second set. Seurat’s ‘The Morning Walk’ and Renoir’s ‘Moulin Huet Bay’ guided pieces in the corresponding suite, particularly its bright sea blues and lemony sparkles.
Brushstrokes
Paul Cézanne’s ‘Avenue at Chantilly’, ‘Hillside in Provence’ and ‘Bathers’ all inform our new ‘Brush Strokes’ suite. Cézanne’s loose, open use of oil paint – developed from his work with watercolours – suggests dashing,
dynamic motion. Boodles designers sought to bring to life the ‘swoosh’ of his brush in the suite. The ‘Brush Strokes’ ring is one of the stars of the show: at its heart, an 18.64 carat aquamarine.

Perspective
Canaletto’s ‘Piazza San Marco’ and ‘Entrance to the Cannaregio’ inspired our ‘Perspective’ bangle. In the former work, there’s a sense we’re right there – in among the action of the colonnade, glancing through an archway into 1758 The arches that line Saint Mark’s Square and shape thousands of windows throughout the city’s palaces are key motifs in these pieces. In the ring and bangle, you can look through an arch to see one further away The mystery of Venice, a city of masks, creates intrigue amid the white diamonds. The bangle features Ashoka cut stones: a unique cut featuring 62 facets, only available to buy from Boodles in Europe.
Motherhood
Rather than an artistic technique, but a re-occurring theme; ‘Motherhood’
in all of its forms is a unifying subject in the Gallery. From the tender portrayals seen in Sassoferrato’s painting to the depictions of the Virgin Mary and Christ child, the essence of motherhood, characterised by loving care, echoes timelessly through the centuries. The embrace, of figures’ heads leaning lovingly and arms curved in gentle embrace, serves as the inspiration for our Motherhood suite.
To create this collection, Boodles designers gained special access to the Gallery, discussing the piece in depth with expert curators to distil the detail of some of the Gallery’s finest treasures into unique and wearable works of art. Meaning you can now carry a Canaletto wherever you go, and enjoy Raphael in the form of a ring.

RACE DESCRIPTON
This is a five furlong handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 100. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.

RACE DESCRIPTON
This race is a six furlong maiden stakes for two-year-olds. Maiden races provide a starting point for young horses that are yet to record a victory and most will be very lightly-raced or be making their racecourse debuts. Previous experience can count for a lot when searching for the winner but well-bred or precocious juveniles are more than capable of landing the prize at the first time of asking.

FACTS & STATS
THE HALLIWELL JONES HANDICAP STAKES
Surely Not came into this race largely in good form after successes in Handicap company at Newbury and Newmarket either side of a below par fifth at York in October. The Newmarket success in April was a particularly comfortable win and so the gelding found himself with plenty of eyes on him. Trained by Dominic Ffrench Davis and ridden here by William Buick, the gelding raced well, taking the lead late on and battling well to hold onto the win.

RACE DESCRIPTON
This is a seven furlongs and about 127 yards handicap race for three-year-olds which have been rated from 0 to 105. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 105 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 100.

Holiday From £749pp* 7-Night

TODAY is Dee day. And that’s especially true for the owners, trainers and jockeys of any of the runners in this afternoon’s HomeServe Dee Stakes who still harbour Classic aspirations. With just over three weeks until the Derby and Oaks at Epsom, the time for pretenders to stake a claim is now.
First staged in 1813, the Dee Stakes is the third and final Classic trial to be run during the Boodles May Festival. While the Chester Vase for colts and Cheshire Oaks for fillies, both of which took place here yesterday, have emerged as more influential trials for Epsom in recent times, the Dee Stakes remains a valuable Listed race in its own right, and one steeped in tradition.
The last horse to win the Dee Stakes and the Epsom Derby in the same season is Kris Kin in 2003. Kris Kin finished only 15th on his debut before winning an ordinary Doncaster maiden in two runs in the autumn
DEE STAKES HISTORY
of 2002. Such uninspiring form saw him sent off the unconsidered 20-1 outsider of just four runners for the Dee Stakes. Big Bad Bob had won his final four races as a two-year-old and was a red-hot 4-9 favourite to make it five.
Despite being officially rated 20lb superior to Kris Kin, Big Bad Bob had no answer to the devastating burst of speed jockey Fergal Lynch conjured from Kris Kin inside the furlong.Reigning five-time champion jockey Keiren Fallon was on board Big Bad Bob that day. But as No1 rider to Kris Kin’s trainer Sir Michael Stoute, Irishman Fallon took over for Kris Kin’s victory at Epsom, where he again swooped late to overtake The Great Gatsby, and deny his trainer Aidan O’Brien a third consecutive Derby following wins for Galileo and High Chaparral.
Fallon had earlier steered Oath to the same Dee Stakes-Epsom Derby double in 1999. After winning the
Dee Stakes by five lengths, Oath then provided his trainer Sir Henry Cecil with the last of his four Derby victories at Epsom, and Fallon his first.
Other notable modern-day winners include Pentire (1995) and Sir Harry Lewis (1987). Along with Teenoso, Pentire was arguably the best horse Newmarket trainer Geoff Wragg handled during a 25-year career. Following an undistinguished two-year-old season, Pentire developed into a top-class middledistance performer at three, winning six of his seven races in 1995, including the Group 1 Irish Champion Stakes.
In the other, he lost out by only a neck to that season’s Epsom Derby and subsequent Arc winner Lammtarra in the Group 1 King George and Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes at Ascot –a race Pentire would himself win 12 months later.
Sir Harry Lewis is one of a record 11 Dee Stakes winners to be trained by Barry Hills. After his 1987 victory here, under French-based American rider Cash Asmussen, Sir Harry Lewis went on to land the Irish Derby – a race delayed for 50 minutes by a hoax bomb warning – and, in turn, give Ulster jockey John Reid his only triumph in his home Derby.
In recent years, Aidan O’Brien has extended his May Festival dominance to this race as well. The Irish trainer having scored in six of the last nine renewals of this contest, most recently with San Antonio who kept on well to score here last year.

FACTS & STATS
Off the back of his superb performance when a dominant winner of a Dundalk maiden, the Aidan O’Brien-trained San Antonio came into this contest in great nick. The son of Dubawi certainly followed that up in fine fashion. With Ryan Moore in the saddle, the colt started well and took an early lead. He was just headed when running short of room before switching to the far rail to take the lead once more, keeping on well to win comfortably ahead of the well-backed pair Alder and Local Dynasty.

TO THE WINNER

San Antonio put up a fine performance to win the 2023 running of the Dee Stakes.
Trained by Aidan O’Brien and ridden on the day by Ryan Moore (the duo won this contest with Star Of India in 2022 as well). This classy son of Dubawi followed up his fine success in a Dundalk Maiden race in March with an even better performance to win this one.
The market leader was Alder. Trained by Donnacha O’Brien, this colt had been an impressive winner of a three-year-old contest at Cork ahead of San Antonio’s stablemate Bertinelli and had been backed all the way into 11/10. Charlie Appleby’s Local Dynasty however came into this race off the back of a tremendous 2022 which included successess at Newmarket and Sandown before an impressive Listed win at Pontefract in October.
LAST YEAR’S DEE STAKES
It proved to be an exciting contest with San Antonio quickly taking the lead in the early proceedings, closely followed by Local Dynasty as well as the Charles Hills trained Lose Your Wad. Stormbuster was prominent as well while Afterwards brought up the rear. Local Dynasty was slow into stride but quickly made headway to get prominent.
The table looked set for an exciting contest as we entered the final two furlongs, San Antonio in the lead against the far rail with Alder right behind. Local Dynasty began to weaken, falling behind as the leading duo went head-to-head. As they entered the final furlong Alder began to hang left giving the advantage to San Antonio and he wasn’t going to relinquish it as Aidan O’Brien’s colt kept on well to the finish, one- and three-quarter lengths ahead of Alder. Local Dynasty was a further 2 lengths behind in third.

This one mile, two furlongs and around 70 yards contest for three-year-olds is a Listed race; a race that can only be bettered by a Group 1, 2 or 3 race. Many of the runners in this race will have already shown themselves to be talented and this race provides a perfect medium for them to be tested against a better class of rival before making the jump into a Group race. Initially, the weights are set at 9st 2lb before penalties are awarded to horses that have previously won above a certain level – 3lb for a Listed race victory or 5lb for a Pattern success.

GOD’S WINDOW quickly reached a useful level in 2 starts as a juvenile (stayed on for third in 1m Group 1) and having blown the cobwebs away in calmer waters on return at Nottingham, the son of Dubawi looks every inch the type to take his form up another notch now his stamina is tested further. Jayarebe created a good impression when scoring at Newmarket latest and he can do better still, with Capulet another likely to benefit from this increase in trip.

Hamish

ORMONDE, who won all 16 races in his career including the English Triple Crown in 1886, was widely regarded as the greatest horse of the 19th Century. To some, he’s arguably the greatest racehorse to have lived. Either way, his legacy has been celebrated here at Chester since 1936, when the Ormonde Stakes was staged for the first time.
Foaled in 1883, Ormonde was a son of the prolific winning racemare Lily Agnes, after whom the opening race of the Boodles May Festival is named. Ormonde won all three races he contested as a two-year-old, including the Criterion and Dewhurst Stakes in the space of only 48 hours.
He won his first Classic, the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket, on his first run of his three-year-old campaign; then added a second when he landed the Epsom Derby on his next start. Further wins followed in the St James’s Palace Stakes and the Hardwicke Stakes at Royal Ascot, en route to Doncaster, where his victory in the St Leger saw
ORMONDE STAKES HISTORY
Ormonde become only the fourth horse in history to win the Triple Crown of British Classics. Ormonde won the Champion Stakes in 1886, and the Rous Memorial and a second Hardwicke Stakes at Royal Ascot on consecutive days during his final season in 1887. That last-named race proved the most challenging of Ormonde’s career. Although he eventually mastered old adversary Minting in an epic duel, a wind ailment he inherited from his dam Lily Agnes had become so acute it was said his “choking fight for breath could be heard all over the racecourse”.
Ormonde was retired by his owner Hugh Grosvenor, the 1st Duke of Westminster, to stand at his Eaton Hall stud, just south of Chester. Much was anticipated of Ormonde’s second career as stallion, but fertility issues meant he sired only eight foals that would race in Britain. Despite this, one of them, Orme, proved a champion in his own right, winning a string of top races including the Eclipse twice, the Sussex Stakes and the Champion Stakes.
Fittingly, the Group 3 Ormonde Stakes has been won by numerous top-class horses down the decades. From the esteemed stayer Alycidon (1949) and Tulyar (1952) during its early days, through to Indiana (1965), who was also a Chester Vase winner, and Classic winners Blakeney (1970), Crow (1977) and Teenoso (1984).
Its most celebrated winners of recent times include Daliapour (2000), Harbinger (2010), St Nicholas Abbey (2011) and Brown Panther (2014), who was jointly-owned by former Liverpool, Manchester United and England footballer Michael Owen, and trained locally at Manor House Stables by Tom Dascombe.
There was also a Royal success in 2016 with Dartmouth, owned by Her Majesty The Queen and a record sixth winner in this race for trainer Sir Michael Stoute. Lester Piggott, Pat Eddery and Ryan Moore are the leading jockeys with five victories apiece, while there have been three dual winners – Sovrango (1962, 1963), Shambo (1993, 1994) and St Expedit (2001, 2002).
Last years renewal of this race saw the William Haggas trained Hamish successfully defend his crown, running out a comfortable winner under Tom Marquand. The gelding won this contest for the second year in a row in what was another superb season for him.

Hamish showed his class in what proved to be a hot renewal of the Group 3 Ormonde Stakes, the feature race of the Boodles May Festival Ladies Day.
Like most of the feature races at the Boodles May Festival, Aidan O’Brien has plundered this race in the past, most recently with 2021 winner Japan. The Irish trainer however was unable to prevent Hamish successfully defending his crown.
Trained by William Haggas and ridden here once more by Tom Marquand, Hamish was fairly fancied in the market (albeit not as much as the well-backed O’Brien entrant Changingoftheguard) and
his form leading up to this contest was impressive. Since winning this race in 2022, Hamish took a 129 day break before trying his hand in Group 1 company as he contested the Irish St. Leger, finishing second, just un-der a length behind the great Kyprios. This was followed by an impressive win in the Group 3 Cumberland Lodge Stakes at Ascot, before another second, this time in the Group 3 St Simon Stakes at Newbury in Oc-tober. There was little doubt that he would be a major player here.
LAST YEAR’S ORMONDE STAKES

His main rival looked to be Changingoftheguard as Aidan O’Brien looked to once more win a race that he has dominated over the years. Ridden by O’Brien’s usual partner in crime Ryan Moore, the then four-year-old had started the season with a bang when an easy winner of a Dundalk Maiden earlier in the month, winning by a comfortable six lengths.
It was an enthralling race from start to finish with Ralph Beckett’s Lone Eagle flying out of the stalls, just behind Changingoftheguard. Ian Williams’ Enemy was prominent as well while Hamish was held up in the rear of the field. As they entered the final two
furlongs, Hamish switched right, pushing on to take the lead inside the final furlong. Haggas’ gelding just seemed to have an extra gear as he pushed on for a win that was a lot more comfortable that the winning distance would suggest.
Lone Eagle kept on valiantly but was no match for the winner and could only manage second. The favourite Changingoftheguard began to weaken late on and could only manage third. The lead trio clear of the rest of the field.
Hamish followed this success with four more victories, all at Group 3 level, taking home wins at York, Goodwood, Newmarket and Newbury.

RACE DESCRIPTON
This is a one mile, two furlongs and around 70 yards handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 71 to 90. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb.

This is a one mile, four furlongs and around 63 yards handicap race for three-year-olds which have been rated from 63 to 82. Like most handicaps on the flat this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band. However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is. This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is considered a disadvantage.
