We trust you have all had a good Summer and looking forward to returning back to Plumpton, a course that is at the Heart Of The Community.
Over the summer we have been busy here at Plumpton and there have been plenty of changes. We have a new washdown facility and unloading / loading bay for horses, improved weighing room access for females, we have continued with course drainage improvements, improved wayfinding around site and updated our Lewes Stand private boxes. These changes just go to show the continued investment and support from our owners Peter Savill and Adrian Pratt.
Today we have 43 runners going to post over 6 races with £62,999 of prize-money on offer. Our feature on the track today is our fourth race the £20k The Friends and Family Remembering Norman Sharpe Handicap Hurdle, which was won by See the Sea last year, trained by Donald McCain and ridden by Peter Kavanagh. The renewal this year looks strong with seven going to post.
I would like to thank our Partners; Southern Cranes and Access Ltd, BetGoodwin and Strong Flavours for their tremendous support for the 2023/24 Season, along with today’s sponsors, Savills, Friends of Andrew Jackson, Half Moon Plumpton, Friends and Family of Norman Sharpe and Booked It. We wish you all have a tremendous day.
Our Retired Racehorse Stable was very well received last season and today we are lucky to have Who Dares Win who has run 60 times and has amassed over £360k earnings across both codes (flat and jumps). Who Dares Wins ran at Plumpton in January 2020 finishing second, being denied by a neck. Pop down and give him a polo and a pat.
It is a busy day, and both of our enclosures are open, with all Family Entertainment located in the Centre Course so all ticket types have access. Apart from our face painting, bouncy obstacle course and mini golf, we also have an amazing Dinosaur show courtesy of RentaDinosaur and a dog show run by Paws for the Cause. We have a map detailing all our activities in the centre pages of the racecard so please take a look. There is plenty going on for all the family besides the 6 fantastic races on course and so all fingers point towards an exciting day.
Looking ahead we have five racedays remaining before Christmas, so make sure you book early to take advantage of our best priced tickets. Christmas is always in high demand, so if you are thinking of booking hospitality for either the 4th or 18th December make sure you contact our team now, not to miss out.
Have a great day.
Best wishes

At every race meeting at Plumpton there are three specially qualified Equine vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses in action.
During a race two vets follow the action from the centre of the course and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the Paramedic team responsible for human casualties.
The third vet is based at the Stable Yard where a close check is kept on all horses, especially those returning after a race.
It is now standard practice for screens to be erected around any horse receiving veterinary attention on the ground. This does not reflect on the severity of any injury, but allows the vet some privacy, and the patient a calm environment in which to make a recovery.
Please do not assume the worst if you see screens erected around a fallen horse. All equine care at Plumpton is provided by:
Sussex Equine Hospital Billingshurst Rd, Ashington, West Sussex RH20 3BB
It is a condition of entry to this racecourse that only individuals in possession of a valid betting badge and occupying an authorised pitch are entitled to lay bets on the course of their business. Any individual contravening these rules will be evicted.

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicapper to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principle purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicap races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

A bet can make an already exciting race far more thrilling. Backing your selection with cash and watching your chosen horse win is a great feeling.
1. Pick your winner!
There are many ways that you can pick your selection:
- Many people select a horse based on its name or jockey colours or go to the parade ring and view the horses.
- Alternatively you may wish to follow a particular jockey or trainer, or a tipster in a newspaper.
- Others like to look at the horse’s previous races or ‘form’.
2. Where to place your bet
– In the betting ring, in front of the Grandstands, with a racecourse ‘bookie’. This is great fun as you can shop around for the bookmaker offering the biggest odds on your selection.
– With the Tote at one of their designated betting points all around the racecourse.
At the William Hill betting shop, which is identical to a high street betting shop.
3. Place your bet
Decide how much you want to stake, and what type of bet you would like to place. Then cheer your selection home! There are a few simple rules that you need to follow after placing your bet:
Please check your receipt. Mistakes cannot be rectified after the race is off .
– Keep your bet receipt safe. You will need this to collect your winnings
Don’t throw away your ticket until the racecourse announcer says ‘Weighed In’. Even if your horse has not won, the result may be changed if there is a ‘Stewards enquiry’. If you have any queries about your bet, please speak to the bookmaker or the Betting Ring Manager.
All Racecourses enforce standard each way terms, in line with Paragraph 2.7.11 of the Terms and Conditions of Entry – Special Conditions E. These terms state that where accepting each-way bets, bookmakers will ensure the terms shall be or shall be better, i.e. more favourable to the customer, than:
(a) for races with fewer than 3 runners – all to win;
(b) for races with 3 or 4 runners – 1/5 odds on place 1-2;
(c) for races with 5-7 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds on place 1-2;
(d) for races with 8 or more runners – 1/5 odds on place 1-2-3;
(e) for handicap races with 12-15 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds on place 1-2-3;
(f) for handicap races with 16-21 runners (inclusive) 1/5 odds on place 1-2-3-4; and
(g) for handicap races with 22 or more runners – 1/4 odds on place 1-2-3-4,and shall comply with clause 2.7.2 regarding the prominent display of terms.
Rule 4 is a betting industry-standard deduction that is made on a winning horse bet when there is a non-runner in a race, and you have taken a fi xed price.
If there is a non runner in the race, anyone who backs a non-runner will get their stakes refunded. The Rule 4 exists to make a deduction from your bet to take into account the impact on the betting market of the non runner.
The amount of the deduction varies depending on the price of the non-runner. The Rule 4 deduction is not applied to the stake, only to your winnings.

Ben Pauling won the Andrew ‘Super Wack’ Jackson Memorial Novices’ Handicap Chase 12 months ago with Special Buddy, and the Gloucestershire-based handler bids to repeat the dose with Gambie Tiep in this year’s renewal at 2.35.

GOZO was arguably the best of these on the Flat and he offers a more convincing profile than most as regards to stamina, so he edges the vote now he switches codes. Logistical appeals most of those with previous hurdles experience, although Feach Amach, who was rated 80 on the level during his time with Jim Bolger in Ireland, can also go well if building on last month’s hurdles/stable debut at Fontwell.
SELECTION; GOZO Danger - Logistical
2
With Imperial Alex lacking experience over regulation fences, and both Honneur De Sivola and Tamaris needing to better their previous chasing form, it can pay to take the view that GAMBIE TIEP is up to the task of giving weight all round here. A 10-length winner last time out, a 6lb higher mark looks very manageable for the top-weight in this company and he is fancied to complete a double. Recent Fontwell chase winner King Of The Story is feared most.
SELECTION; GAMBIE TIEP

Danger - King Of The Story

Proper Twelve scored over this trip at Market Rasen when last seen in May, but a 9lb higher mark may leave him vulnerable now returning from a break. With that in mind, the consistent POLLYPOCKETT is preferred, with her match-fitness proven after a close second to a progressive mare last month and she can go one place better off just 1lb higher today. Ten Past Midnight and Ranco are also feared.
SELECTION; POLLYPOCKETT
Danger - Proper Twelve
CALL ME ROCKY just failed to reel in a couple of progressive rivals at Uttoxeter 11 days ago, but that would appear to be decent form for the grade. Milton Harris’ charge is only 1lb higher today and gets the nod over Get Back Get Back, who won this race in 2020 off a 1lb higher mark and ought to appreciate the combination of a drop back in trip and class. Hiconic is another to consider.
SELECTION; CALL ME ROCKY

Danger
Post No Bills has been admirably consistent over the larger obstacles and though he’s unlikely to be far away, preference is for ONLY MONEY to follow up his victory in this race 12 months ago. Chris Gordon’s charge is only 2lb above his last winning mark, a contest in which he comprehensively defeated the reopposing Elios D’Or, and a drop in class ought to aid his chances. Sea Prince could be involved if putting his best foot forward.
SELECTION; ONLY MONEY Danger - Post No Bills
EASY PEASY picked up well to make a winning debut at Killarney in July and now makes his first start for the powerful Nicky Henderson yard. The strength of that form is open to debate, but the Walk In The Park filly is bred to be useful and natural progression could see her repeat the dose. Private Walker, who finished a creditable third at Stratford first time out, appeals as the main danger. Debutant No Touching can chase the pair home ahead of Highway One O Four.
SELECTION; EASY PEASY Danger - Private Walker
toteplacepot suggestions:
Racing on Sunday 14th May began with a strong win for the 9/4 second favourite, Angel’s Dream. The Gary Moore trained gelding was ridden very well by Niall Houlihan, keeping him in touch with the leaders throughout the two-mile contest. The gelding took the lead as they approached the last, and held on strongly, just doing enough to see off Tim Vaughan’s Artistic Endeavour by a neck in what was an edge of your seat finish. Definite rounded out the podium positions for trainer Milton Harris while the well-backed favourite Up For Appeal could only manage fourth after struggling with his jumping early on.
The second contest of the day proved to be much more one sided. George Baker’s Hello Sunshine improving from her placed effort here the month prior to score by a mightily impressive eleven lengths. She was prominent throughout the contest, and despite making a meal of the second to last hurdle, she soon went clear to win easily. Sandalwood kept on well in second but proved no match for the winner.
Small Bad Bob had been knocking on the door prior to this meeting, notching a pair of placed efforts at Fakenham and Warwick in the weeks leading to this and he finally got his reward here, scoring for the first time in over a year. Paul Henderson’s gelding was made to work for it though. He led for much of the contest but had to deal with lots of pressure from his rivals, but kept on well to score the win.
Glance At Me scored the win in the fourth, continuing her real hot streak in 2023 (2 wins and 2 seconds in her last 4 appearances). It was an exciting contest too as the Andrew J Martin trained mare did battle with Michael Roberts’ veteran Andapa for the lead. From three out these two pulled clear of their rivals, going head-to-head with Glance At Me just finding enough to win by three quarters of a length.
Royaume Uni was a comfortable winner in the fifth, after a fine ride from Rob Hargreaves.
The six-year-old gelding was held up in the rear by making his move at the seventh hurdle. He pushed into the lead after a superb jump over the last, soon going clear. The Mark Walford trained Ashington ran well but proved no match for the winner.
The penultimate race of the day saw Warren Greatrex’s Henschke produce an excellent performance to score over the fences. He was disputed the lead throughout under an aggressive ride from Jonjo O’Neill Jr, and comfortable held off Call Of The Loon and Faustinovick to win.
Thee days finale saw the team of Sheena West and Harry Reed come together as A Tickatickatiming secured a comfortable victory in the bumper by three- and three-quarter lengths. It proved to be the first win of her fledgling career, going one better than her second at the previous meeting at this course. She led throughout, which seems to be her preference, but this time no one could catch her as she pushed along to win readily.

GOZO isn’t bred for this sort of test now hurdling but he’s very dangerous given his Flat form if seeing it out and taking to this discipline. Sir Raj is feared given his ability on the level, with Logistical’s experience over timber likely to take him a fair way against this opposition.

It is with great regret that we at Plumpton racecourse have learned about the passing of Roy Baker, who was one of our longest standing patrons.
Roy died peacefully after a short illness in hospital on 3rd September, he was 94 years old, and had been a member at Plumpton up until 2 years ago. He was born and raised in Falmer, and he worked and lived in Stanmer Village all his life. He started going to the races at Plumpton with his father, Jim when he was a boy, meaning his association with Plumpton lasted over 80 years.
After he retired in 1987, he hardly missed a meeting at Plumpton and would refer to the racecourse as his “happy place”. He had many friends at the racecourse and will be sadly missed by all of us at Plumpton Racecourse
For the 11th year running we are sponsoring this race as a memorial to a great friend of ours, Andrew Jackson, who passed away suddenly in June 2013 “Wack” loved all sports and was a regular on the racecourse and a genuine fan of National Hunt racing. An avid cricketer, huge Sunderland FC supporter as well as a fan of a pint or two – any reference to these pursuits in today’s runners will be heavily backed by his friends! So enjoy the race and raise a pint to our friend ‘Wack’, who’d have loved today’s day out. Gone, but never forgotten and always in our hearts.

It is now over 8 years since Norman died suddenly at only 54 years of age. The strength of affection for Norman is underlined by the fact that for the 5th time, around 50 of his friends and family are gathering at Plumpton racecourse to sponsor a race in his name and to reminisce.
It is an appropriate memorial as he loved horse racing and put simply, loved a laugh with friends and family He regularly attended Plumpton in his late teens and then Ascot, Sandown, Kempton and Epsom, whilst living in London. The Prix De L’Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp also became a mustdo, attending 27 times from 1984.
Norman (or “Norm”) was born in Edinburgh in 1961. He was a proud Scotsman and a keen sportsman. Supporting Scotland and Hibs produced few victory celebrations but the (many) near misses were still enjoyed.
Norman was also very much a man of Sussex. His parents moved the family south in 1971 and they still live in Cuckfield today His teenage years were in Haywards Heath attending the local Grammar School and 6th form. He represented the county and South of England at rugby, also played for Felbridge (Juniors) and later London Scottish before an injury prevented further potential progression.
Norman then absorbed himself in Sussex football, playing and managing at Franklands Village for many years, although most would agree his footballing strengths were in management His genuine desire to help individuals and his talent for creating an enjoyable team spirit, would also serve him well in his working life.
Norman attained a degree in Accountancy from Kingston Polytechnic and continued to live in South-West London for a few years after, marrying in 1988. He worked initially as an accountant, before finding his true vocation in sales within the building industry, covering 30 years with periods at Taylor-Wimpey and Persimmon.
Norman moved to Partridge Green in Sussex in the early 1990s, where he lived happily with his wife and three daughters, until his untimely passing.
For those of you reading this who didn’t know him, Norman was great company and if he was out for the day or night you wanted to be part of it He was immensely generous, very loyal and had a wonderful sense of humour.
Norman was a very good friend, and we miss him greatly.
