Doncaster 1 Mile 6 Furlongs Saturday 13th September
SPONSORS WELCOME
On behalf of everyone at Betfred a very warm welcome to Newmarket for The Betfred Guineas Festival.
When opening my first shop in Salford, Greater Manchester back in September 1967, not in my wildest dreams did I think that one day I would be headline sponsor of one of The Guineas, never mind both!
Yet all these years later I am so proud to be able to say that the 1,000 and 2,000 Guineas completes the full set and Betfred are the very proud sponsor of all five British Classics The fact that this has never been done before makes it all the more special.
Looking back to my first ever Guineas as a bookmaker (which certainly does not feel like over fifty years ago!), I remember well that Sir Ivor obliged at 11/8 and was certainly one for the punters and I soon had a queue out of the door at the ‘pay-out’ window!
On that day Sir Ivor was ridden by the punters friend Lester Piggott and trainedbythegreatVincentO’Brienand a few weeks later they duly followed up in the Derby and another big queue!
Unfortunately, Sir Ivor never ran in the St Leger so no triple crown was won but just a couple of years later Piggott and O’Brien combined on the incomparable Nijinsky to land that famous classic treble – and yet more queues!!
With only one betting shop back in 1970 the ‘history’ value certainly did not make the payout any easier to take but I can honestly say that I would love to see the triple crown won again this year Fifty-five years has been far too long to wait for a repeat and so to add a little additional ‘encouragement’ I am putting up a bonus of £2,000,000 if any horse can win this years Betfred Triple Crown.
Finally, a big thank you to everyone who helps make these days so special, the management and staff of Newmarket Racecourse who have made Betfred feel so welcome, Jockey Club Racecourses, ITV Racing and Racing TV and never forgetting you, the racegoer (without fans there is no sport).
A British Classic is a very special occasion and we need them to thrive, I may be a bookmaker, but I am also a racing fan, and I intend to enjoy the very special atmosphere these races produce, be it here at Newmarket, Epsom Downs or Doncaster.
But for now we concentrate on three excellent days of racing here at HQ, hopefully we’ll see you again very soon at The Betfred Derby.
Enjoy the racing and be lucky.
Fred
Welcome back to the Rowley Mile for the second day of the Betfred Guineas Festival.
Following an exciting start to the meeting yesterday, we’re set for another brilliant day of top-class racing and off-track entertainment for all ages.
Firstly, I would like to take this opportunity to thank our new sponsor Betfred, who generously sponsor all five of the Betfred British Classics for the first time. Betfred are also offering a bonus of £2 million to connections of any horse that wins the ‘Betfred Triple Crown’ – the Betfred 2000 Guineas, Betfred Derby and Betfred St Leger – a feat only achieved 15 times and not since the great Nijinsky in 1970.
We are also extremely grateful to TrustATrader, World Pool and the Hong Kong Jockey Club, Nyetimber, oddschecker, Lay and Wheeler and Aston Martin for their generous support across today’s card.
We’d also like to thank the European Breeders Fund for their continued support of prize money and Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai for their generous sponsorship of our Owners and Trainers facility.
This afternoon’s seven-race card is headlined by the Group One Betfred 2000 Guineas, the first Classic of the season. Run over a straight mile, this historic race has been won by champions past and present including Frankel, Sea The Stars and Nashwan.
Away from the track, visitors can enjoy a full schedule of entertainment across the racecourse accompanied by delicious food and drink, plenty of family activities in the Garden Enclosure and live darts with Keith Deller and Russ Bray. Live music will be performed throughout the day from the Snapchaps, the Roaming Boys and saxophonist Jackson Bulter.
Stick around after racing for Big Teaser who will be performing a 75 minute live set on the Hyperion Lawn. This high energy indie pop band with Glastonbury and Reading Festival pedigree promise a set full of modern anthems and classic crowd favourites.
With loads of activities on course over the three days, do make sure you make your way to the Aston Martin plinth and the new Betfred Sports Zone
Looking ahead to tomorrow, we’ll round off the festival with the Betfred 1000 Guineas and another superb day of racing and entertainment. Tickets remain available online or on the gate
We hope you enjoy a fantastic day here at Newmarket and wish the very best of luck to all runners and their connections.

RACE ONE
Atakingwinner ofthiscontestlastyearbeforegoingontolandthe Wokingham,UNEQUAL LOVEsetsthestandardonformandshe couldbe a top-level sprinter for connections this season. Placed in the Haydock Sprint Cup, the five-year-old should have too much for Frost At Dawn, who has improved with each start this year and was a good second at Bath latest Behind her on that occasion was course winner Vadream (fifth) and Adaay In Devon (seventh)
RACE TWO
An encouraging third on his return to action in the Abernant over C&D last month, LETHAL LEVI is the class act in this field having landed the Ayr Gold Cup in taking fashion last year More Thunder had the reopposing Aramram (second) and course specialist Woodhay Wonder (third) behind when scoring over track and trip last month, and all three should have a say in proceedings. Purosangue may be winless since October 2023 but he caught they eye on his return at Southwell.
RACE THREE
NotinactionsinceladingtheGoldenGatesStakesatRoyalAscotlastJune,HANDOFGODhasallthepotentialtoprogressintoaGroup performer this season Ryan Moore getting back on board suggests connections mean business and it may be top-weight Arabian Light who gives him the most to think about, having scored comfortably over this trip at Meydan in February
Another gelding who could have lofty aspirations this season is Approval, who got up late to score in a valuable handicap at Goodwood last August
RACE FOUR
WASHINGTON HEIGHTS landed the Abernant here last April before going on to contest a number of top sprints including the Nunthorpe Off the track for 133 days prior to finishing second in a Group 3 in Qatar in February, Kevin Ryan’s charge could step forward and, given his liking for this venue, it would come as no surprise if he did the business This went to a three-year-old 12 months ago and Tropical Storm, who represents a stable in tremendous form, must be respected. No Half Measures is noted too.
RACE FIVE
Expanded recorded a gutsy debut success before once again showing those battling qualities when second in the Dewhurst behind Shadow Of Light. RACE SIX
KNIGHTSWOODwentwinlesslasttermbuthavingstruckthewoodworkatThirskonhisreappearance, hemadenomistakewhenrecordinga narrow success at Ripon last time. Charlie Johnston’s gelding was worth more than the winning margin suggests that day and, off 3lb higher, he may well repeat the dose. El Cordobes finished second in a couple of handicaps at Meydan earlier in the year and there should be more to come He’ll need improvement to defy this lofty rating, though, and it could be that French Master is the bigger threat
RACE SEVEN
AMERICAN STYLE seems to have benefited from a wind operation over the winter judging by his seasonal debut success at Ripon a couple of weeks ago With the promise of more to come, Kevin Ryan’s gelding merits respect off a 4lb higher mark So Darn Hot got no luck in running at Newcastle last time and could easily bounce back here. Invictus Gold was placed in a similar C&D event last month and may make the frame once again.
RACE EIGHT
White Crown Star filled second place in a similar C&D contest on his handicap debut last month and Andrew Balding’s colt has to be of interest on the back of that performance. That said, marginal preference is for HUNKY DORY, who was third in a decent novice event at Kempton on his final start last year and that form suggests that an opening mark of 74 should be workable for the son of Pinatubo. Cases can be made for plenty of the remainder, but Beronia and Rogue Diplomat stand out the most.
RACE NINE
CLASSIC ENCOUNTER remains unexposed and got off the mark over a mile at Redcar last month The fouryear-old faces a tougher task here, but he may still have more to offer and a 4lb rise appears to be fair Crack Shot showed promise when third on his debut for these connections at Kempton recently and he should not be discounted. Others to consider are Dolce Courage, Mr Baloo and Cogitate

PLAY SMARTER
Lots with chances in a cracking sprint but it’s impossible to side against MORE THUNDER, who looked a sprinterto follow when making a winning start over C&D for his new yard at the Craven meeting and can make light of a 5lb penalty Woodhay Wonder shaped well when third in that race and rates the main danger, although the resurgent Stanage and in-form pair Purosangue and Lethal Levi can both have a say too. Aramram completes the shortlist.

THEHONGKONGJOCKEYCLUBWORLDPOOLPALACEHOUSESTAKES
First staged in 1961, the Hong Kong Jockey Club World Pool Palace House Stakes is run in recognition of one of the town of Newmarket’s most historic landmarks.
Built on the site of a palace of King Charles II, Palace House Stables reputedly incorporated a passageway under Palace Street to the home of His Majesty’s mistress Nell Gwynn. Dating back to Stuart times, it was at Palace House Stables that Charles II most likely stabled his hacks and coach horses
From the late 1800s into the 20th century, Palace House Stables was the property of the Rothschild Family and was frequently visited by the Prince of Wales, later to become King Edward VII.
Classic winners trained at Palace House Stables during this period include Hannah, winner of the 1000 Guineas, Oaks and St Leger (the fillies’ Triple Crown) in 1871 and 1871 Derby victor Favonius.
After falling into disrepair during the latter part of the 20th century, Palace House Stables has been restored and now forms part of the National Horseracing Museum.
As a race, the Palace House Stakes takes place over five furlongs and carries Group Three status. It is open to three-year-olds and upwards.
Sole Power (2013, 2014) and Mabs Cross (2018, 2019) are the most successful horses in the contest’s history with two wins each.

THE CLASSICS
The Classics in British horse racing are the crown jewels of the sport, embodying centuries of tradition and prestige. These five races—The 1000 Guineas, 2000 Guineas, The Oaks, The Derby, and The St Leger—have shaped the history of the sport since their inception. Together, they represent the pinnacle of achievement for any thoroughbred, and their impact is felt far beyond the borders of the UK. The journey of the British Classics began in the 17th century, with the first St Leger Stakes run in 1776 at Doncaster
Over the years, these races have attracted the best horses, trainers, and jockeys, and their importance in the racing calendar has only grown. These iconic contests have been the setting for some of the sport’s most thrilling moments, including the rare achievement of the Triple Crown, a feat last accomplished by the legendary Nijinsky in 1970
Betfred’s historic sponsorship of all five of the British Classics, beginning in 2025, marks a new chapter in the rich legacy of these races As the first sponsor ever to hold the title of supporting all five Classics, Betfred is making a bold statement in its commitment to the sport. The bookmaker, led by founder Fred Done, has further elevated the importance of these races by offering the first ever bonus to any horse that wins the coveted “Betfred Triple Crown,” which consists of the 2000 Guineas, The Derby, and The St Leger. This extraordinary £2 million bonus, reflects Betfred’s passion for the sport and its ambition to cement the British Classics at the forefront of the sport.
With a focus on promoting the individual races, as well as their collective significance, The Jockey Club and Arena Racing Company have established a new identity for the British Classics. This refreshed brand will serve as a beacon of the races’ heritage, while also drawing attention to their ongoing relevance in today’s racing world The Betfred British Classics logo will be prominently displayed at Newmarket during the Betfred Guineas Festival, and this new identity will be used to educate and inspire racing fans about the historic and cultural significance of the Classics

THE BETFRED 2000 GUINEAS - FACTS AND FIGURES
BACKGROUND
The Betfred 2000 Guineas, which was founded in 1809 and has a glittering roll of honour, celebrates its 217th running in 2025 and has a total prize fund of £525,000
Along with the Betfred 1000 Guineas, also over Newmarket’s Rowley Mile, the 2000 Guineas is one of the five Betfred British Classics, all restricted to three-year-olds - the others being the Betfred Derby and Betfred Oaks, both over a mile and a half at Epsom Downs in early June, and the extended 14-furlong Betfred St Leger, which takes place at Doncaster in September.
Sir Charles Bunbury, who played an important role in the development of British racing, including overseeing the extension of The Jockey Club’s authority, was inspired to introduce the two youngest Classics - the 2000 Guineas for colts and fillies and the 1000 Guineas for fillies only The name derived quite literally from the initial prize fund for the race – 2,000 Guineas was in effect a guaranteed sweepstake, irrespective of the number of subscribers
The inaugural running was won by Wizard, who gained £1,522 for his connections, in the silks of Yorkshire sportsman Christopher Wilson Bill Clift steered Wizard to that success and, five years later, completed a famous double for the same owner when partnering Charlotte to take the first running of the 1000 Guineas Both were trained by Tom Perren
FIELD SIZE
The largest field was in 1930 when there were 28 runners in the race won by Diolite, while 27 ran in 2000, 1964, 1951 and 1933. In both 1829 and 1830 there were just two competitors, with both winners - Patron and Augustus - owned by Lord Exeter and trained by Charles Marson The maximum field allowed for safety reasons is currently 25
WINNING DISTANCE
Since 1900, the biggest winning distance was recorded in 1947 by Tudor Minstrel, who scored by eight lengths. In the current century, Frankel has been the easiest winner when scoring by six lengths in 2011
During the same period, the Classic has been won by a short-head 13 times - Neil Gow (1910), Kennymore (1914), Adam’s Apple (1927), Pay Up (1936), Kingsway (1943), Nimbus (1949), Palestine (1950), Only For Life (1963), Kashmir II (1966), Royal Palace (1967), Mister Baileys (1994) Mark Of Esteem (1996) and Poetic Flare (2021)
Henrythenavigator in 2008 was the first British Classic winner to score by a nose – the new minimum winning distance introduced by the BHA less than three months earlier.
BETTING
The longest-priced winner was 1961 hero Rockavon, who was returned at 66-1 Not nearly so generous were the odds of 12-100 laid on St Frusquin in 1896 - the shortest-priced winner in the race’s history.
In the 216 runnings to date, a total of 84 favourites or joint-favourites have obliged in the 2000 Guineas – meaning 38 per cent of winners have headed the betting market
Frankel is the shortest priced winner since World War II, having been returned the 1-2 favourite in 2011
OVERSEAS-TRAINED WINNERS
Irish-trained horses have won 20 renewals since 1900 The first was 1960 winner Martial, trained by Paddy Prendergast, and he has been followed by Sir Ivor (1968 Vincent O’Brien), Nijinsky (1970 Vincent O’Brien), Nebbiolo (1977 Kevin Prendergast), Lomond (1983 Vincent O’Brien), El Gran Senor (1984 Vincent O’Brien), King Of Kings (1998 Aidan O’Brien), Rock Of Gibraltar (2002 Aidan O’Brien), Refuse To Bend (2003 Dermot Weld), Footstepsinthesand (2005 Aidan O’Brien), George Washington (2006 Aidan O’Brien), Henrythenavigator (2008 Aidan O’Brien), Sea The Stars (2009 John Oxx), Camelot (2012 Aidan O’Brien), Dawn Approach (2013, Jim Bolger), Gleneagles (2015 Aidan O’Brien), Churchill (2017 Aidan O’Brien), Saxon Warrior (2018 Aidan O’Brien), Magna Grecia (2019 Aidan O’Brien) and Poetic Flare (2021 Jim Bolger)
Since 1900 there have been 12 winners trained in France They are 1933 Rodosto (trained by Harry Count), Le Ksar (1937 Frank Carter), Djebel (1940 Albert Swann), Thunderhead II (1952 Etienne Pollett), Taboun (1959 Alec Head), Baldric II (1964 Ernie Fellows), Kashmir II (1966 Charles Bartholomew), Nonoalco (1974 Francois Boutin), Zino (1982 Francois Boutin), Zafonic (1994 Andre Fabre), Pennekamp (1995 Andre Fabre) and Makfi (2010 Mikel Delzangles).
GUINEAS-DERBY DOUBLE & TRIPLE CROWN
The first horse to complete the 2000 Guineas-Derby double was Smolensko, owned by Sir Charles Bunbury, in 1813. Since then a further 36 horses have won both races, the most recent being Camelot in 2012
West Australian (1853) was the first horse to gain the Triple Crown, consisting of three British Classics, the 2000 Guineas, the Derby and St Leger. Eleven more colts have tasted Derby victory on route to securing the Triple Crown, most recently Nijinsky in 1970.
A further three Triple Crown winners secured their Classic triumphs at Newmarket during the war years - Pommern (1915), Gay Crusader (1917) and Gainsborough (1918) The latest colt to try and win the Triple Crown was Camelot in 2012 - but he finished second in the St Leger after winning the Guineas and Derby.
The dozen Triple Crown winners are West Australian (1853), Gladiateur (1865), Lord Lyon (1866), Ormonde (1886), Common (1891), Isinglass (1893), Galtee More (1897), Flying Fox (1899), Diamond Jubilee (1900), Rock Sand (1903), Bahram (1935) and Nijinsky (1970) Pommern (1915), Gay Crusader (1917) and Gainsborough (1918) also all won the 2000 Guineas, Derby and St Leger when the Classics were all run at Newmarket in World War I.

FRENCH MASTER looked every inch the smart prospect he’s bred to be when bolting up in a Kempton novice over this trip when last seen in October and can make a successful return/handicap debut before having his sights raised. El Cordobes is another with a bit of class about him and is a big player. The mare Speriamo could go well at bigger odds.

PLAY SMARTER
A valuable handicap for the grade and this is very competitive. Despite not looking the most straightforward, SOLARARMYprogressed again to land a 7fKempton handicap last time and he remains open to further improvement back on turf Arbitration has shaped as though this return to 7f should suit and could be lurking on a dangerous mark, while Nahash was much improved on handicap debut and could well have more to offer Rockin’ The Boat, whose debut form is working out, also makes appeal.

Successful from the same mark in this race 12 months ago, CRACK SHOT produced a solid first effort for his new yard when third at Kempton 26 days ago and, given he may well tighten up a bit for that outing, he could be the way to go under William Buick. Redcar scorer Classic Encounter and Dolce Courage are others to consider Charming Whisper and Waiting All Night also make each-way appeal.

In particular, any instance of unruly behaviour, such as drunkenness, abusive conduct, singing or shouting, shall entitle the Racecourse Executive toexpel the offending racegoer without prior notice Racegoers must abide by any regulations including the observance of designated non-drinking areas
At Newmarket Racecourses we believe racing should be enjoyed by anyone and everyone. And one thing is certainly true, the more relaxed and comfortable we feel, the more likely we are to have a great time So that’s why we’ve created one very simple piece of guidance, to come “dressed to feel your best”.
We’re all unique, and no more so than in our sense of style and comfort. For some, wearing a nice sweatshirt, pair of jeans and clean trainers is what makes them feel confident and at-ease. For others, they might prefer to turn heads with a sharp suit or glamorous dress and high heels, particularly for one of our big race meetings.
But whatever your tastes, the most important thing when choosing your outfit is, of course, comfort and confidence. So wear what feels right for you and will keep you feeling your best from start to finish, whatever the weather Here’s some other useful tips and advice for making sure your time with us is as memorable as possible.
Fancy dress can often add colour and fun to our racedays, but please avoid inappropriate or offensive outfits, as anything deemed vulgar or derogatory may be refused entry.
We love other sports as much as anyone, but showing allegiance to a favourite club can sometimes appear antagonistic. So, to keep things simple, please refrain from wearing team kits when attending one of our racedays.
Only individuals in possession of a valid betting badge and occupying an authorised pitch are entitled to lay bets in the course of their business Any individuals found contravening these conditions will be evicted. Members of the public may not use two-way radios, scanning receivers etc, for any purpose at the racecourse.
EMERGENCY NOTICE
In an event of an emergency please be guided by our security stewards and by messages you will see and hear around the racecourse. We would advise that you keep your personal belongings with you at all times. In the event of an evacuation please do as requested by Newmarket Racecourses Management and security staff They will direct you to a safe place. Do not attempt to regain access to buildings

IMPORTANT NOTICES
RACEHORSE & JOCKEY WELFARE
The welfare of the sport’s equine and human participants is paramount to British Horseracing. All racehorses competing in Britain are stabled at the premises of trainers who are licensed by The British Horseracing Authority The standards demanded by The BHA of licensed racehorse trainers far exceed those prescribed by animal welfare legislation. The British Horseracing Authority similarly licenses every racecourse, setting high standards for the racing surface and all parts of the course used by competitors, both human and equine. BHA Officials ensure that racecourses delivers these standards. In addition Newmarket Racecourses employs a minimum of three veterinary surgeons, whose sole responsibility it is to provide care to the horses throughout their time at the racecourse In the event of an incident on the racecourse, any horse affected will receive immediate treatment from the racecourse’s veterinary team. Qualified paramedics and doctors are also on hand in the case of any incident involving a jockey If any incident occurs during a race it is routine practice for screens to be erected around the horse or jockey receiving treatment. This is to allow the veterinary or medical personnel to make a safe and accurate diagnosis and so that they may perform any treatment in a private and calm environment. If necessary, horses and riders will be transported from the course to receive further treatment at the nearest equine hospital or Accident & Emergency hospital
