SUMMER ON THE JULY COURSE: AUTUMN ON THE ROWLEY MILE:The Jockey Club would like to thank our Group Partners for their support in 2023
A warm welcome to the July Course for the first day of the Boodles July Festival, our Ladies Day, where world class racing meets elegant fashion.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Kingdom of Bahrain, bet365, Boodles, the European Breeders Fund and Edmondson Hall Solicitors for their sponsorship of today’s card We are also extremely grateful to Boodles for their generous support across all three days of the Boodles July Festival, along with our betting partner bet365
Already the longest standing sponsor at Newmarket’s premier summer meeting, the Kingdom of Bahrain have supported the Group Three Bahrain Trophy since its inception in 1991 This year sees their support extend to the Group Two Princess of Wales’s Stakes and the Group Two July Stakes
One of the world’s emerging racing jurisdictions, it was announced last week that Bahrain’s premier race, the Bahrain International Trophy, will this November be run with Group 2 status and a prize fund of $1million.
At 12.50pm, racegoers will be invited to join Lady Cecil who will raise a glass in memory of her late husband, Sir Henry Cecil, to whom the newly opened Rose Terrace is dedicated. The Rose Terrace features some of the most spectacular views down the July Course and offers an al fresco dining experience for racegoers, whilst celebrating one of Newmarket’s most decorated trainers.
The sustainable Style Awards has returned to Ladies Day, with some amazing prizes on offer, including a first prize worth over £6,000 This will be open for entry from 11.20am to 3.00pm, with winners announced after the fifth race. We also encourage racegoers to join us after racing to enjoy a DJ set full of feel-good tunes and dance anthems from Radio 1 DJ Charlie Hedges. Please look at the racecourse map further in this racecard for locations of all activity.
Looking ahead, we have another fantastic day of racing tomorrow, where the mares and fillies will take centre stage in the Group One Tattersalls Falmouth Stakes. Tickets for tomorrow will be available on the gate for all those interested.
Across the season, we would like to thank the European Breeders Fund for their contributions to prize money and Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai for their continued sponsorship of our Owners and Trainers facility
I hope that you all have a wonderful time here at Newmarket and wish all the horses and their connections the very best of luck
Warm wishes,

OTHER USEFUL DETAILS
6. Owner’s colours worn by the Jockey
Select your horse. Note their name and saddlecloth number
Choose your bet. ‘To win’ or ‘each-way’ are popular types of bet.
‘To win’ is for your horse to come first.
‘Each-way’ is for your horse to come first or to be placed. It’s two bets, so ‘£2 each-way’ = £4 total bet.
Decide the amount – or stake – you are comfortable to bet.
Place your bet. There are different places to bet on course; The Tote, racecourse bookmakers, betting shop or online. Each option offers a different experience. Collect. Once ‘Weighed-in’ has been announced, present your betting slip and collect any winnings.
As a leading distributor of horse feed, bedding and supplements in the greater GCC area, I am once again immensely proud to support the Jockey Club at Newmarket Racecourses for the 2023 season.
Newmarket is credited as being where thoroughbred racing first started which is why so many from every corner of the world assemble and appreciate The Rowley Mile and The July Course.
As ever, the enthusiasm of Sophie Able and her team at Newmarket translates into a top class service for Owners, Trainers, Jockeys and Stable Staff and for that we are deeply grateful.
I would like to wish all those visiting Newmarket throughout the 2023 season, the very best of luck.
Have a wonderful day at the races today.

The
House is a tranquil restaurant with an exceptional ambience, fitting for a balmy day or evening watching first-class racing.
We are delighted to be officially opening our new Rose Terrace and Champagne Bar across the Boodles July Festival, following an exciting redevelopment project that has taken place.
The Rose Terrace features some of the most spectacular views down the July Course and offers an alfresco dining experience for racegoers, whilst celebrating one of Newmarket’s most decorated trainers.
At 12.50pm, racegoers will be invited to join Lady Cecil who will raise a glass in memory of her late husband, Sir Henry Cecil, to whom the newly opened Rose Terrace is dedicated to.
The Champagne Bar now features some of the most iconic moments of July Course history, including the great Frankel’s debut, and Frankie Dettori’s 3000th winner. With a fully updated interior, it’s a great place for racegoers to relax and enjoy a drink whilst learning more about our racecourse’s history.
The updated Weighing Room now contains top-class facilities for some of racing’s most important participants, the jockeys. Having been fully modernised, these upgrades are the product of cross-industry collaboration and bring the weighing room into line with new BHA standards of practice.
Look out for our roaming musicians out on course today; joining us we have The Bluebirds, a trio of fabulous singers and the Fat Cats Brass Band, an exciting modern UK brass band like you’ve never seen before
Don’t forget to strike a pose for the Newmarket Paparazzi who will be taking photos of our guests around the racecourse! Keep an eye on our Facebook page following The Boodles July Festival for your photos.
Approximately 15 minutes following the last race, Radio 1 DJ Charlie Hedges will be taking to the stage! You can expect all the feel-good tunes and dance anthems after a day of superb racing – the perfect way to end day one of the The Boodles July Festival!
Make sure to head to one of our Style Awards Pods located around the racecourse to enter our fabulous Sustainable Style Awards for free!

The judging Panel for this year’s competition comprises of Alice Ryan, Editor of Velvet Fo & Williams, Co
of Alice Editor mprises Magazine, Mandy Weetch, Founder gazine, Founder Director of Neon Leo & Karl Model and del Lif tyle Coach. Coach.
Alice Ryan has been writing about fashion and beauty for more than a decade and judging race-day best-dressed competitions for almost as long. A journalist of 20 years’ standing, she has edited a series of regional lifestyle magazines and also writes nationally on a freelance basis. When it comes to style, her hero is the late, great British designer Alexander McQueen, whose clothes “were timeless and boundary-pushing in equal measure, while truly empowering their wearer as all great fashion should” For Alice, a winning Style Awards outfit will not only be polished, but also full of personality
With a career that started in fashion in the 90s, progressed to music PR in the ’00s, and more recently, social media marketing (Mandy has promoted the amazing Paolo Nutini, JLS, The Darkness, Paloma Faith, & Lemar and social PR for local brand Blue and LoveSaffronWaldenEssex), Mandy has come full circle with Neon Leo. With a passion for fashion and vibrant colours, together with business partner Abi North, Neon Leo is the perfect fit for the modern-day fashion lover. Specialising in fashion rentals and preloved clothing, Neon Leo perfectly embodies the current demand for slow and sustainable fashion. Recent highlights since launching in March 2023 are supplying their incredible wardrobe for a shoot with global sustainable jewellery brand Scream Pretty Jewellery and, most recently, styling the cover shoot for July’s Velvet Magazine as well as being the sustainable fashion partner for the Style Awards at The Boodles July Festival at Newmarket Racecourses. Mandy loves bold fashion with an emphasis on colour and femininity “I adore that feeling when you fall in love with an item, and when you wear it, you feel powerful and beautiful, which can totally change your mood. Fashion is about owning your look, which promotes your true authentic self If you feel amazing in something, it radiates outwards” Mandy will be looking for something that stands out and is fashion forwards at the 2023 Boodles July Festival Style Awards.
For over a decade Karl has been helping people look good with no clothes on as a health and wellness coach. More recently though, Karl has stepped into the modelling world and found a new passion for fashion. When he did, it didn’t take him long to see the parallels between how living a healthy lifestyle can help you look and feel your best, and the power of what you wear can do the same.
The right clothes can help people look good, feel confident, boost self-esteem and offer a chance to display their unique personalities. This is what Karl will be looking for at the Style Awards, someone who is doing something a little outside the box, unique, and showing who they are through what they wear

An interesting renewal. TOWER OF LONDON looked on a steep upward curve when scoring twice in Ireland last month and can extend his winning run to three. Queen’s Vase runner-up Saint George rates an obvious danger, while Klondike has come a long way in a short time and should have more to offer

Newmarket Racecourses today looks forward to welcoming the Kingdom of Bahrain as a key sponsor at this week’s Boodles July Festival (Thursday 13th July – Saturday 15th July inclusive)
Already the longest standing sponsor at Newmarket’s premier summer meeting, the Kingdom of Bahrain has supported the Group Three Bahrain Trophy since its inception in 1991. The Bahrain Trophy is now joined by the Group Two Princess of Wales’s Stakes (Sponsored by the Kingdom of Bahrain) and the Group Two Kingdom of Bahrain July Stakes as part of a new multi-year agreement.
All three contests take place on the opening day of the Boodles July Festival, Ladies Day (Thursday 13th July).
Newmarket-based John Gosden, the five-time champion Flat trainer who now jointly shares the licence with son Thady, voiced his support of the new sponsorship agreement.
Gosden said: “It is good to see such interest from Bahrain. The quality of the racing is really on the up in Bahrain and they have increased the prize money at the big international meeting they stage over there in November
“It has made us stop and think what nice horses have we got for that race. I think you will see the whole Middle Eastern programme between Bahrain, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Dubai become incredibly important to all of us trainers in Europe and we will increasingly target that
“We will have horses primed for the big meeting at Bahrain in November as you can’t race right through the season here and think you will be all right for there
“To that extent it has created a very important place for us, not only to run and exhibit those horses, but for international trade. I see it as nothing but a complete positive.”
At the Boodles July Festival, team Gosden is likely to be represented in the Princess Of Wales’s Stakes (Sponsored By The Kingdom Of Bahrain) by Israr.
Gosden continued: “Israr breezed on Saturday morning, and he will appreciate any rain that comes our way. It is a fresh track on the first day, but Charlie (Appleby) looks like he has got a stranglehold on the race.
“We are very pleased with him and he has run very well this year A mile six (furlongs) just stretched him last time at York, but he would appreciate to get his toe in
“A mile and a half is his trip, but I will be having a good look at the ground. He ran very well at Newbury on his return, but he had his ground that day.
“He is one of those big horses that is coming through the ranks. He is a big powerful horse who is improving with age when the conditions are there to suit.”
Racing in the Kingdom of Bahrain is run by the Bahrain Turf Club with the core season starting in October and concluding in March. One of the world’s emerging racing jurisdictions, Bahrain is also one of the most exciting and fastest growing, with the feature race of the season, the Bahrain International Trophy.
This year’s Bahrain International Trophy, run on 17th November at the Rashid Equestrian & Horseracing Club, will be more valuable an ever, following the news that the race’s value has been increased to $1 million and the race’s status has been upgraded to Group Two level. Run over 1m 2f, the race often features a host of international runners, with last year’s race including runners from six different countries.

Richard Hannon continued his fine form in this race, with his fourth win in nine years and also made it back-to-back successes as Persian Force won here.
He was a short-priced favourite that day and the two-year-old certainly justified his price by completing a relatively comfortable success over Show Respect in second.
This victory made it three wins from his first four starts and has subsequently been retired to stud

Preference is for MOUNTAIN BEAR, who is in top hands and remains open to improvement on the back of his maiden success at the Curragh last month. Norfolk Stakes runner-up Malc is feared most with the step up in trip likely to be in his favour, whilst Purosangue hails from a yard whose juveniles tend to come on plenty from their first outing and is also much respected.

Our involvement in community and charitable activities in Newmarket has the single aim of making a positive impact to Newmarket as a whole. Whether it’s a collaborative role in some of the large number of ongoing community projects or using our own resources and expertise, we enjoy playing our part. Our community work has taken many different forms over the years, and continues to evolve to match the ever changing needs of Newmarket and its residents. Examples include support of the ongoing education programmes in conjunction with Godolphin at local primary schools and the Newmarket Academy, as well as being involved in improvements to the Memorial Gardens. More recently, during the pandemic organisations from right across Newmarket came together to support the town and its residents. This included setting up helplines, delivering food parcels and organising a Christmas parade The relationships and positive momentum created during the last few years has continued, with recent projects including:
– Improving the Yellow Brick Road
– Clearing the Community Orchard
– Partnering with Newmarket Open Door
– Delivering ongoing talks on road safety in local schools
– Supporting the grassroots teams of Newmarket FC We have plenty more projects in the pipeline and for as long as The Jockey Club is in Newmarket, we will remain committed to contributing positively to the community Our community work also extends to longer term initiatives to help the town, Such as being involved in an exciting new initiative called The Newmarket Charitable Foundation.

Charlie Appleby claimed his first win in this race since 2017 as Yibir justified joint favouritism.
Appleby also saddled Global Storm in the race but it was the son of Dubawi who stole the show, kicking clear by two-and-aquarter lengths.
Yibir came here with form figurs of 223 that season and he finally notched his first win of 2022 with an impressive performance. Living Legend and Global Storm followed home in that order.
WON THIS CONTEST IN 2017 AND 2022 AND TODAY HE SADDLES GLOBAL STORM AND ADAYAR.
First run in 1894, the Princess of Wales’s Stakes is named in honour of Princess Alexandra of Denmark, who became the Princess of Wales on her marriage to the future King Edward VII in 1862.
Over the years the race, which is open to three year olds and upwards, has been won by some of the very best horses to have graced the historic Newmarket turf Initially staged over a mile, it was increased to its present distance of a mile and a half in 1902
Isinglass, who had won the Triple Crown in 1893, was the inaugural winner in 1894 while the 1899 Triple Crown hero, Flying Fox, took in the Princess of Wales’s Stakes in the same year as his 2000 Guineas, Derby and St Leger victories. Rock Sand, the 1903 Triple Crown winner, was another high-class winner in the early years, scoring as a four year old in 1904 Lance Chest became the first horse to score back-to-back victories when he triumphed in 1912 and 1913, while another high-class winner was Blandford in 1922 Although he only ran four times in his life, Blandford went on to a highly-successful career as a stallion, as did the 1925 victor, Solario.
Airborne, the first post-war winner of the Derby in 1946 at 50-1, won the Newmarket contest in the same season, while a young Lester Piggott enjoyed one of his first big race victories when riding Zucchero to success in 1952. The “Long Fellow”, who was just 16 at the time, also enjoyed back-to-back victories on Primera (1959 and 1960) as well as scoring on Apostle (1961), Lord Helpus (1977), Pollerton (1978), Light Cavalry (1981) and Head For Heights (1984)
Due to the quality of its winners, the contest was upgraded to a Group Two affair in 1978
Two very good fillies to have won the Princess of Wales’s Stakes are Lupe (1971), who won the 1970 Oaks, and Height Of Fashion (1982) Owned by The Queen, Height Of Fashion was subsequently sold to Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum and became one of the most outstanding broodmares of her generation with the likes of Nashwan, Unfuwain and Nayef among her offspring. Unfuwain himself won the 1988 Princess of Wales’s Stakes
In 1989, Carroll House was the winner of the Newmarket contest and went on to prove himself one of the outstanding middle-distance horses of his generation by landing the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe later in the season.

The first formal match race famously took place on Newmarket Heath in 1622, and over the following century the practice grew rapidly in popularity In 1740 the government of Sir Robert Walpole became concerned at the popularity of racing and the gambling that took place on it.
New laws were introduced to try to regulate the activity and make it less popular, but they proved ineffective. Fearing further government intervention, racing enthusiasts came together in the coffee houses of London and in 1750 they created racing’s own regulatory body:The Jockey Club
Despite its name, The Jockey Club has never been a club for jockeys. In the 18th century it was traditional for professionals and tradespeople to be described by their occupations, with a first name of “Mr Jockie” for those in racing. Although early meetings were based in London, Newmarket was already the home of horseracing and it was just two years before The Jockey Club laid down permanent roots there.
In 1752 The Jockey Club leased a plot of land in Newmarket and built a coffee house, and in the 19th century the land was acquired permanently The original building still exists today and has been restored and maintained as part of The Jockey Club Rooms, which were re-built and expanded in the 20th century
An integral part of Newmarket High Street, the Rooms embody the link between the town of Newmarket and The Jockey Club, which remains as strong as ever to this day. It is home to one of the finest collections of equestrian art to be found anywhere in the world, with tours available to the public through Discover Newmarket.
The Champions Lawn offers guests a wonderful raceday right in the heart of the July Course.
This stylish private trackside facility features a landscaped garden, boxed hedging and beautiful blossom trees, perfect for groups, family and friends. Guests can expect to enjoy an alfresco experience with fabulous views and dedicated amenities.

The welfare of the sport’s equine and human participants is paramount to British Horseracing. All racehorses competing in Britain are stabled at the premises of trainers who are licensed by The British Horseracing Authority The standards demanded by The BHA of licensed racehorse trainers far exceed those prescribed by animal welfare legislation. The British Horseracing Authority similarly licenses every racecourse, setting high standards for the racing surface and all parts of the course used by competitors, both human and equine. BHA Officials ensure that racecourses delivers these standards. In addition Newmarket Racecourse employs a minimum of three veterinary surgeons, whose sole responsibility it is to provide care to the horses throughout their time at the racecourse In the event of an incident on the racecourse, any horse affected will receive immediate treatment from the racecourse’s veterinary team. Qualified paramedics and doctors are also on hand in the case of any incident involving a jockey If any incident occurs during a race it is routine practice for screens to be erected around the horse or jockey receiving treatment. This is to allow the veterinary or medical personnel to make a safe and accurate diagnosis and so that they may perform any treatment in a private and calm environment. If necessary, horses and riders will be transported from the course to receive further treatment at the nearest equine hospital or Accident & Emergency hospital.
