This is a five furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 49 to 68. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.

RACE
This race is a six furlongs maiden stakes for two-year-olds. Maiden races provide a starting point for young horses that are yet to record a victory and most will be very lightly-raced or be making their racecourse debuts. Previous experience can count for a lot when searching for the winner but well-bred or precocious juveniles are more than capable of landing the prize at the first time of asking.

RACE SUMMARY: STAR NOIR wasn’t unfancied in the betting and made an encouraging start when splitting a pair of rivals with experience at Beverley a fortnight ago There should be better to come now upped to 6f and he gets the nod. THE DEBT Scottish racing owes to Bill and David McHarg is incalculable During their overlapping careers from 1949 to 1992, they served all five courses in various capacities ranging from joint Clerk of the Course through to Managing Director. The two men were very different in character, but they had one great thing in common – a burning desire to do their best for Scottish racing
Between them father and son quite literally changed the face of racing at Ayr and Musselburgh by turning them into dual purpose courses. In laying out a National Hunt course at Ayr in 1950, Bill ensured the survival of the Scottish Grand National when Bogside had to close in 1965 following the withdrawal of Levy Board support
But for Bill McHarg we might not be racing here today Hamilton was in dire financial straits when he was appointed its managing director in 1973, yet he was prepared to risk his own money to buy up 60 per cent of its shares in order to form a Trust whose avowed objective was to “continue racing at Hamilton for all time.”
Eight years later Bill began his long fight against an iniquitous rates burden that had been imposed upon the Scottish courses With his astute legal mind (he obtained his law degree in 1948) and eloquent arguments he won the ear of George Younger, the then Secretary of State for Scotland and MP for Ayr, but even then relief was slow in coming although when it finally materialised the future of racing in Scotland was assured
In 1980 David had turned from his first love of rallying (in the late 1970s he was co-driver to the Scottish champion Drew Gallacher) to become Clerk of the Course at Musselburgh, a post formerly held by his father, while his grandfather, Alec, had been General Manager there during his years of service to Scottish racing (1924-56)
Bursting with new ideas, he brought in a series of innovations for the benefit of racegoers and the welfare of horses and jockeys
He also took a particular pride in turf management and in this respect Hamilton presented him with a challenge not faced since Noah built his ark. Every raceday seemed to bring on a mini monsoon when the rest of the country was basking in sunshine In fact, on occasions he would be watering at Musselburgh when he could not use starting stalls here because the ground was so heavy.
In 1986 he brought in Alec Fergusson as Head Groundsman and over the next few years they worked wonders laying miles of new drains and improving the soil. During one sodden year, the ultra-dedicated Fergusson laid down 300 tons of sand on the course by hand because the ground was too wet for a tractor and trailer
The workload finally took its toll, and after an unfortunate falling out at Ayr, David left for the sunnier climes to fulfil a three-year contract as a Racing Manager in Singapore. On his return home, Peter Savill enlisted him to run his courses at Plumpton and Fontwell, but after just a few years in the job David was struck down with the same disease that had cut short his father’s life in 1994.
He fought the cancer for five years, but his friends who saw him present the trophy for his father’s race here in 2006 knew it would be the last time he would visit his old course. Sadly, in March 2007, their worst fears were realised

RACE DESCRIPTION
This one mile contest for those aged three-years-old and upwards is another maiden stakes - a race for horses that have yet to record a racecourse victory. There are a variety of reasons why the older horses in this race could still be maidens. Stoutly bred horses are unlikely to be seen at their best over the shorter distances of their juvenile season whilst a setback or injury can curtail even the most precociously bred horse’s two-year-old career
Leading course trainer (20-25): J Goldie (66 wins from 462 runners, 14%) runs SPIRIT OF NATURE Trainer-in-form (last 14 days): W Haggas (15 wins from 49 runners, 31%) runs GOLDEN HORSE Longest Traveller: GOLDEN HORSE trained by W Haggas, Newmarket, 360 miles.
BETTING FORECAST: 8-15 Golden Horse (IRE),
7-4 They All Know Me (GB), 40-1 Spirit of Nature (IRE), 200-1 Precious Sapphire (IRE), 300-1 Soham’s Roger (GB) RACE SUMMARY: It’s likely that GOLDEN HORSE will benefit from a stiffer test in time, but there is nevertheless immediate promise at this trip judged on his highly encouraging debut third at Pontefract where he came from much further back than the pair that beat him. An expensive purchase and in good hands, he can be expected to take a step forward here and prove too strong for They All Know Me, who should pick up a race himself before long. ONE MILE, ONE FURLONG about 35 YARDS (9f abt 35yds) (1800m)
7.10pm
RACE DESCRIPTION
This is a one mile and one furlong handicap race for threeyear-olds and upwards which have been rated from 71 to 90. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap In simple terms a horse rated 85 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 80.

7.40pm
RACE DESCRIPTION
This is a six furlongs handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 59 to 78. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb
Leading course trainer (20-25): J Goldie (66 wins from 462 runners, 14%) runs ETERNAL SUNSHINE
Trainer-in-form (last 14 days):
D O’Meara (9 wins from 55 runners, 16%) runs ABERAMA GOLD Longest Traveller: ABERAMA GOLD trained by D O’Meara, Upper Helmsley, 208 miles.
BETTING FORECAST: 9-2 Sir Garfield (IRE), 5-1 Novak (GB), 6-1 Aberama Gold (GB), 13-2 Lord Abama (IRE), 10-1 Eternal Sunshine (GB), 11-1 Iris Dancer (GB), 12-1 Sacred Falls (IRE), 14-1 Ziggy’s Condor (IRE), 18-1 Hour By Hour (GB), 28-1 Emperor Caradoc (FR), 40-1 Habrdi (IRE)
RACE SUMMARY: SIR GARFIELD is enjoying a productive campaign and, having lost little caste in defeat when finding one too good at Pontefract recently, he is pretty appealing. It also augurs well that his two previous visits here resulted in a win and a near miss. Lord Abama didn’t do a great deal wrong at Southwell last time and he is just about feared most ahead of Aberama Gold and Novak, while Eternal Sunshine also enters the reckoning.

ONE MILE about FOUR FURLONGS (12f abt 15yds) (2400m) 8.10pm
This is a one mile and four furlongs handicap race for threeyear-olds and upwards which have been rated from 46 to 55. Like most handicaps on the flat this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band. However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is. This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is considered a disadvantage

RACE SUMMARY: It could be worth chancing CUSHTY, who continues to edge down the weights and it could be that the first-time visor will make the difference here. Lady Phoebe was a pretty decisive winner at Musselburgh recently and she is feared most ahead of Crystal Guard and the penalised Shabu Shabu. ONE MILE about 68 YARDS (8f abt 68yds) (1600m)
This is a one mile handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 46 to 55. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap In simple terms a horse rated 55 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 50.
Leading course trainer (20-25):
J Goldie (66 wins from 462 runners, 14%) runs UNCLE LIAM Trainer-in-form (last 14 days): T Easterby (15 wins from 88 runners, 17%) runs TEMPER TRAP Longest Traveller: TEMPER TRAP trained by T Easterby, Malton, 203 miles.
BETTING FORECAST: 15-8 Royal Blaze (GB), 3-1 Temper Trap (GB), 10-3 Daring Leader (IRE), 9-2 Paco’s Pride (GB), 100-1 Uncle Liam (IRE), 200-1 Aurora’s Doublesix (IRE)
RACE SUMMARY: Connections of ROYAL BLAZE will presumably be tempted to allow the 4-y-o to take his chance, given the way he went about his business in a classified race at Ayr on Saturday That admittedly didn’t take a great deal of winning, but this wouldn’t be the strongest of contests either and the 4-y-o is taken to strike while the iron is hot. Temper Trap continues to edge down the weights and he earns the vote for forecast purposes ahead of longstanding maidens Daring Leader and Paco’s Pride
